[slams back drink*] I have a new nonsense concept.
* I don't drink alcohol so please imagine this is me taking a sip of my white mocha.
Ahsoka and Rex, due to Maul, get pointed at Mustafar in time to arrive for the Bullshit. Ahsoka definitely goes. Rex and Maul might. What's important is that Ahsoka gets there juuuust in time to see the last moments, you know, where Anakin is clearly off his rocker and Obi-Wan chops off all his limbs and Padme is dying and Anakin's on fire, etc.
The fun stuff.
So Obi-Wan is dead inside, Anakin is dead inside and out (mostly), Padme is dying, and Ahsoka just got here five seconds ago, possibly with a renegade Sith Lord (as opposed to the literally-on-fire Sith Lord a few feet away) and shell-shocked clone captain in tow.
Not a great day to be Ahsoka Tano! Decent day to be Maul, though, Kenobi is suffering and Skywalker-the-replacement is on fire and also has lost limbs like Maul did thirteen years ago, he's having a blast.
(Also Obi-Wan is probably expecting violence from Rex.)
But Ahsoka's emotional turmoil is at such a peak after everything, like her friends all trying to kill her for a bit, that Morai shows up.
Morai, being a personification of the Force-but-only-the-not-evil-parts, recognizes that shit's fucked, but these specific people are, hm, kind of important! To lots of things! Maybe she can use them to fix it.
And so she tosses them all back in time, as one does.
I'm thinking to about when Obi-Wan was ten-ish? So uhhhhhhhh 47 BBY?
Now, to make this peak awkward, I am going to have them landing on Concord Dawn, with the True Mandos.
Again, our cast:
1. Dying pregnant lady that needs immediate medical attention 2. Dying on-fire guy with no limbs (everyone insists he's evil) that needs immediate medical attention 3. Some? Jedi? Who looks like he'd cry if he weren't dehydrated as fuck 4. Terribly overwhelmed teenage togruta wearing beskar and a pair of lightsabers 5. Some guy who looks exactly like the Mand'alor, but older and blonde 6. Motherfucker Unlimited Himself 7. The True Mandalorians
Jango's like nineteen.
He has no idea what to do with these people because the first instinct is to take out the Jedi--Galidraan is three years away but he's not a fan of them in the first place--but there are so many people in need of medical attention and that guy has his face.
Rex, said guy with his face, manages to argue for medical attention first and explanations later (again: dying pregnant lady and recently-on-fire dude), while Ahsoka and Obi-Wan have to shout down Maul from going off and doing his own thing before anyone has a plan.
(If Rex is not there, then neither is Maul, and Ahsoka is the one doing the negotiation while Obi-Wan tries to use what little healing he knows to help--well, to help Padme, because both she and Anakin are dying but Padme has, to Obi-Wan's knowledge, not killed small children the way Anakin has, so he can prioritize her.)
Padme still dies. Unfortunate, but she was choked out on a lava planet and medical attention was delayed, the dark side is at play, etc.
Anakin is. Uh. They put him in a bacta tank and induce a medical coma until someone can come up with a plan.
Which leaves us with Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and the twins.
Padme gets a pyre because they can't take her to get buried on Naboo. Obi-Wan takes on the job of going to Coruscant and warning the Council, etc. If Maul is there, Obi-Wan brings him along as evidence.
Which leaves us with Ahsoka playing Auntie to the twins while Anakin's half-dead, mostly evil, all-unconscious in a bacta tank, Padme's nothing but ashes, and the Mandalorians are generally just kinda. Watching her. Because she's sketchy but also looks like she's Seen Some Shit to a degree that they recognize is a bit much even by their standards.
Rex has firmly entrenched himself in Older Bro territory and keeps refusing to let anyone bother her when she's having a bad day anyway.
"What the fuck is all this setup for?" you might ask. I'll give you one guess.
And @atagotiak did in fact guess:
Unconventional time-travel romance!
HELL YEAH, BABY
I want Jango awkwardly falling in love with Ahsoka, who may or may not give him the time of day, because she's got newborns to look out for, and her older brother is evil and unconscious and missing all his limbs, and her... other brother? Friend? SiC? hates Jango to an uncomfortable degree.
I just really love this mental image of Ahsoka holding both twins and trying to calm them down, near tears because of how overwhelmed she is by all this, possibly covered in some degree of soot or dirt, and Jango catching a look at her and being suddenly struck by Feelings.
Tia:
Also other Jango might’ve been fully aware of his part in causing this whole traumatizing mess and even if this Jango isn’t responsible that’s still. Uh. Awkward, to say the least
Jango still isn't sure what Rex's connection to him IS, just that he's from the future, worked with/for a Jedi, and had some kind of mind control chip in his head.
Nobody explained the clone thing, and Jango can't make the math work yet because nobody's telling him how far into the future these people are from.
So Jango's slowly falling for Cute Dangerous Togruta Jedi(?) Chick while her adoptive older brother (who Jango is starting to think might be his estranged future son or something) glares daggers every time Jango so much as offers her a glass of water.

Godzilla vs Kong: Brutally Honest Thoughts
Tumblr media
(Took me long enough, eh? Depending on home video releases be like that.)
So first things first, I have a confession to make: I spoiled the movie before I watched it. I was impatient and they had only announced an HBO Max premiere in the states and a theatrical run in Canada at the time. Afterward, I got heads-up from a friend and immersed myself in the opinions of those lucky enough to see it early. I’m just saying that I have some preconceived opinions that I’m sticking to.
That said, Godzilla vs Kong turned out to be more fun than I expected! But you already knew that. Everyone did. The two kings of movie monsters had their rematch and this time it was with glorious Hollywood SFX powering it this time.
The human story was fun but it’s clear they stopped trying at this point. Team Kong stole my heart, especially Jia. Team Godzilla (although the Conspiracy Crew would be a more fitting term since they spend more time chasing down mysteries than trying to back or understand Godzilla) was more fun than I expected and their dynamic was surprisingly enjoyable. Bernie is actually kind of funny, it's nice to see Madison acting more assertive, and Josh was fine--he was the only sane man of the bunch but he was also the butt of the jokes. Still, all the hardcore conspiracy jokes got old fast and it feels off seeing the daughter of two scientists turn into an edgy conspiracy crackpot. Why not an edgy science major?
Team Apex are fun villains, especially Walter Simmons who's a great megalomaniacal CEO type, but Ren Serizawa is a joke. I like his actor's performance but he's just another footnote. Nobody bats an eye at his last name, although the only heroes he interacts with are Nathan Lind and he just misses Team Godzilla. He really could have just been any other villain, but instead, they had to sully Serizawa’s legacy further while robbing a good actor of some interesting material. (As is, it turns out he was just an egotistical jerk with daddy issues--an easy puzzle to solve on day one--after all...)
However, I still cannot and will not approve of the fact that somebody thought it would be a good idea to make the heroes of a sci-fi story into hardcore conspiracy theorists in this day and age. Likewise, I’m not a huge fan of how they essentially made the Hollow Earth into its own universe complete with a crazy portal and an environment with its own laws of physics, nor am I totally crazy about the huge leap in technology that was made between this and KOTM, or G’14 for that matter.
The monsters as awesome as they are, are the biggest mixed bag in the show.
Kong is at his best in ages, and while I am all for the new heroic warrior character that Legendary have crafted and I acknowledge that making him a worthy opponent for their god-tier Godzilla was going to be a hurdle, I think they did a splendid job. Seeing Kong using agility and acrobatics was a glorious sight to behold, and something about Kong becoming a tool-user and weapon wielder just feels right. It’s a far better demonstration of Kong as a “thinking animal” (*wink, wink*).
I’m much less thrilled about their treatment of his greatest opponent ever. After everything they’ve done to build up Godzilla as the incredible force of neutral good fighting to maintain balance and all the build up to ancient rivalry debating back to a great Titan war--even going as far as putting his name in front Kong’s this time!-- they’ve reduced Godzilla back to glorified bully for Kong. He only gets the minimum amount of sympathy from the cast of his movie before they go off to deal with the conspiracy plot or focus on Kong and the Hollow Earth. Worse still, he is somehow more powerful and more aggressive than ever for a good chunk of the movie which leads to an outcome I’m sorry to say we all saw coming. Somehow, I suspect that the reason behind this was how Wingard cited Godzilla vs. Mothra, vs. Destoryah, and Shin-Godzilla as influences for the monsters scale and story, which while cool and all, are all movies where he was played up as a mostly stoic antagonist rather than a three-dimensional character like Kong. (Though ironically vs. Destoroyah and Shin did a better job of making Godzilla feel more sympathetic and in both of them he was a walking nuclear reactor meltdown.)
Due to the unfortunate time constraints of the three-way deal between Toho, WB, and Universal at the time this was in production, Kong was unable to secure a proper sequel that could develop his skillset like Godzilla’s did. Nevermind the fact the filmmakers completely surrendered to the “nothing matters but the monsters” mentality that a chunk of the fanbase has been spouting since this universe unofficially kicked off almost 10 years ago. (Sidenote: Oh god, I’m turning in an old fart already.) As a result, the movie trips over itself trying to set up Godzilla and Kong’s rivalry as well as building up Kong as a worthy opponent to Godzilla while expanding on their shared lore, and as a result countless plot points set up in in the previous movie and tie-in movie are thrown out the window. I’m sorry to say but in spite of all hopes and illusions of grandeur, it’s safe to this damn thing is a Kong movie with Godzilla as the bad guy.
...at least until HE shows up. Yup, Mechagodzilla. The biggest spoiled twist of the centuries steals the show so the movie can pull a Dawn of Justice. But! It does it much better than the fractured DCEU’s most controversial entry ever could. Mechagodzilla’s inclusion gets a decent amount of build up thanks to Team Godzilla/the Conspiracy Crew, and when he shows up, does he make an impression! At first, I wasn’t sure how to feel about his inclusion or his design, but I’ve come to like this one. He’s basically a kaiju terminator built in Godzilla’s image made purely out of heavy machinery piloted by the best Ghidorah head. It’s a jarring change of pace compared to previous MechaG’s but it grows on you after a while. With the abundance of weaponry stuffed into him, he feels like a fitting update of the original killing machine, and even if his inclusion feels like an easy way out of the big showdown, it’s fun to see him played as a literal colossal heel for the kings to team up against. Not to mention he looks shockingly good with those red highlights. However, one still can’t help but wonder how and why he was made in this universe, or how he feels like pure heavy machinery one minute and then an extra-large Ultron unit the next.
As for the the big throwdowns we’ve all been waiting for... well, we’re still in the mixed bag deparment. While the fights are all exciting and excellently choreographed, and benefit from some more eclectic lighting and cinematograph, I’m sorry to say that as far as the rematch of the century goes they dropped the ball on this one.
Don’t get me wrong, the fights are all great in their own ways, but there’s a drastic change in the feeling of weight and power with the monsters. Godzilla, Kong, and even Mechagodzilla all feel strangely floaty in most of their fights. One moments they feel like true behemoths shaking the very earth with every movement and then it’s like they’re in Godzilla Unleashed, running, jumping, and throwing each other around with speed that feels that almost makes you wonder if the Hollow Earth’s gravity inversion stuff is leaking out into the world. While it’s all perfectly cool, you can’t help but wonder how Kong is able to leap between aircraft carriers and buildings, when Godzilla got the ability to blow a hole through the Earth itself, or how a colossal machine is able to move so nimbly or why it has to be flashing blue all the time.
It’s fascinating and fun but you just can’t help but wonder how we got from almost posthuman disaster and war movies exploring how we’re at the mercy of the ancient almost mythical forces beyond our comprehension, we’ve found ourselves smack dab in the middle of Bayformers meets Jurassic World levels of Hollywood absurdity where anything and everything can and will happen in the name of getting to the monster fights. Although I can’t say I’m surprised given the director’s take on Death Note made some questionable choices with it’s take on the infamous cast while still coming up with some genuinely inspired choices. Still, all things considered we could have gotten worse compared to ther cinematic universes made by WB and Universal.
As for some misc. thoughts to close up this rambling mess:
-The soundtrack is fantastic. A great continuation of the feel of Skull Island’s mixtape with some truly wonderful picks. Special mention goes to the opening and ending songs, and they GOT AN ELVIS PRESLEY SONG IN HERE! YES!!! The three kings of pop culture together at last!
-While this movie didn’t need to be any more overstuffed, it would have been nice if the rest of the Titans didn’t disappear entirely from this movie. I get that Godzilla: Dominion already explained what happened to them all more or less, but it really is a missed oppurtunity that we never got to see another Titan war. Or Rodan attacking Kong to avenge his pterosaur bretheren from days long past. Speaking of which...
-“Save Mothra” jokes be damned, Mothra would have been a welcome gues star, not just to help break up the big fight, but to show off Godzilla’s softer, more protective side. And yes, I want more Mothzilla. Shut up, we deserve it.
-Boy, Monarch sure does a whole lot of nothing up-top, huh?
-The cinematography is a great update but there’s a little too much neon lighting, especially in the Apex HQ and the Hollow Earth throne room. It feels like they’re trying just a little too hard to sell the more futuristic, Hollywood sci-fi feel.
-The score is... great but not that great. Of course, I’ve always had mixed feelings about Tom Holkenburg (AKA Junkie XL)’s music. I liked Kong’s themes, but they REALLY dropped the ball with Godzilla’s theme. Mechagodzilla’s works really well as long you ignore that it’s just Godzilla’s theme in this movie with an ominious choir added in.
-The new Hollow Earth creatures are all perfectly fine. Actually, I thought they were another highlight! Especially the Warbats, Hellhawks, and Doug the Titanus Foetodon Man.
-I want to do a release the extended cut campaign but I don’t think any of us have the energy for that s**t anymore.

a/n: happy matsukawa monday!! i woke up with mattsun on the brain, so here we are. when i found out he was a mortician in the timeskip i got happier than i could ever possibly explain,,, heres me going crazy about death care for .03 seconds :>
genre: fluff!!!
pairing: matsukawa issei x gn!reader
warnings: this ones gorey and the biggest part of the plot is stuff involving cadavers and the embalming process. please use caution!!
word count: 717
enjoy!!
Tumblr media
“how’d this guy die?” you were shaving the face of an older man, probably 66-70. prepping him for the works.
it wasn’t your first rodeo, of course being a decently credible embalmer, but you were new here. you didn’t know his way of things.
“heart attack, makki grabbed him this morning” matsukawa issei was your new boss.
he had this magnitude you had never seen in a mortician, but maybe that’s what made him good at his job. he was able to charm even the most broken, grieving souls; you’d be lying if you said you weren’t in awe of it.
“damn. who’s makki?” you continued shaving the man's face, cutting the last of the small, grey hairs that adorned his chin. his eyebrows were unruly too, you made a note of that for later.
“oh he’s my friend, i’m letting him drive the van while he’s” he paused to put air quotes around the next words “between jobs.”
you let a small giggle out, showing you heard him, “when’s the viewing for this one again?”
“tomorrow morning.”
you nodded and continued working, trimming the small eyebrow hairs, proceeding to close the eyes and mouth. your needle pierced the underside of his chin and worked the plastic thread upwards, closing the gap between his lips. the suture method.
every once in a while he’d come into your brain again; short black hair and dejected look being more alluring than you’d let yourself think. he’d bust out in laughter from the other room and you’d let a small smile fall from your lips. you felt powerful around him, his aura rubbing off on you. he laughed at your jokes and allowed you to exist in any way you liked, but you had also seen what he’s like when his power takes over the room. it was far more exciting to make his power take over the room.
the time passed and you clocked out, eager to clean the scent of chemicals out of your clothes. you walked contently to your home, flopping your body on the couch before turning in hours later.
no matter how many times you did it, the paranoia of something happening with the body during the viewing always loomed above your head. you’d push it down with a glass of wine, but the potential of something little going wrong never failed to worry you.
time passed and sleeps were had, waking up the next morning to a pink sunrise and a sky full of falling leaves. you wore a pair of black pants and a collared shirt, an outfit that you’d come to be confident in, even when it’s practically useless to be. you walked into the funeral home, shoes clicking loudly on the floor, into your boss, putting on his quiet but commanding wake attitude.
“how was your night, y/n?”
“fine, issei. i’ve got a lady in the back i need to sort out, but i’ll be back.” you walked past him into the place where you spent your days, and he followed close behind you, trying his best not to make a noise.
“do you want something?” you snapped slightly, but it was all from anxiety about the day ahead.
“can i kiss you?”
“excuse me?”
he took a step closer to you, eyes looking hungry and full of a wonder you had never seen in them.
“can i kiss you?”
the time passed so much slower in your head as you thought over your emotions, wondering what this would do. you couldn’t deny having even the slightest crush on him. he had power, and that excited you, but you were never expecting him to feel anything too.
“i gues-“ you spoke quickly, but not quite quick enough for him, as he cut off your words with the impact of your lips. time moved even slower now, feeling each small tingle that made its way to the soft, pink skin. he placed his arm around your body, lifting you by your waist slightly and deepening the kiss. his other hand moved to your neck, finding its home right behind your ear. the kiss seemed to last forever, but ended with a harsh exhale and a, “they’ll be arriving soon.”
“yeah” you stuttered slightly, still in a state of shock “for sure.”

“Hmph.” Angelina gave the Doctor a sidelong glance as they sat in his office. He’d asked her to be his assistant a while back, and she was sure something would have come out of it by now, but nope! It’s like he actually brought her in to do work! And I mean, sure, she was pretty good at paperwork - working as a courier helped with that - but still...It didn’t help he seemed biologically incapable of taking a hint. Who knew their HR lead was so dense?
Speaking of dense…“Doctor! Let’s go shopping!”
“Can’t. Working.” He glanced at his assistant, who was totally typing up a report right now and not just randomly pressing keys into a word processor. “Hey, Angie, you want to go shopping with her?”
“Eh? Um, sure, I gue-” Before she could even finish the word, the Nian had pulled her out of her seat and was dragging her to the shuttles.
The Vulpo began to float, essentially turning her into a balloon bobbing behind her captor to avoid scuffing her shoes as much. “Do we need to be going this fast?”
“You only have one life, kid. Why waste it walking from place to place?” In short order, they made it to the shuttle depot, and Angelina returned to earth. “What did he call you again? Angie?”
“That’s right, Miss Nian.”
She waved her off. “No ‘miss’ necessary. What kind of shopping do you like doing? I’m not too picky about where we go, as long as it’s not up here.”
“A music store, I guess.” The Vulpo shrugged. “You know, normally, the Doctor’s the one who goes with you on these trips, so I dunno what the plan is...Why didn’t he come today?”
“Who knows? You like him, right?” She hopped behind the wheel as a slightly stunned Angelina took the passenger’s seat.
A bit of blustering later, and she replied, “H-how did you-”
“It’s so written on your face, it’s not even funny,” Nian replied, smirking. “You’re like a starstruck puppy. Adorable.”
“I...Was it that obvious?”
The Nian chuckled. “I said it was, didn’t I? He doesn’t know?”
“Apparently not.” She pouted as her driver parked them within walking distance. “He should, though! I’ve given him all the hints.”
“And you haven’t told him directly?”
Angelina wasn’t quite floating, but she was definitely starting to hover. “Well, n-no, but-”
“So tell him, then.” Nian started walking towards the music shop. “If you really like him that much, why keep waiting around?”
“...I guess I could do that.” She sighed, but her mood was immediately boosted as they entered the shop and were hit with a wave of sound.
The Nian shuddered. “So loud. Angie, is that-”
“I love this band!” Whatever her companion was trying to tell her was entirely unimportant right now, as her near-favorite song was on, and it was time to jam. “What were you saying?”
“It’s nothing.” No, it had been something, but it didn’t matter. The Vulpo was literally walking on air, dancing around the store as she enjoyed the ambient music and argued with herself about whether she should buy a guitar or not for the umpteenth time. It was the polar opposite of the norm for these shopping trips, where Nian was putting in all the energy and the Doctor sponged it up...and it was so cute when Angie found a record she’d apparently been looking for and squealed.
Wait, was it happening again?
“Alright, I’m good~” Angelina found the Nian near the front, shopping bag in hand. “Somewhere you want to go next?”
“I had a few ideas. There’s a couple places that sell some stuff that might help get the point across to our oblivious friend.”
The Vulpo blinked. “You’re going to help me?”
“We’re here to shop, so I might as well get something.” She smiled. “Besides, I want to see how you look in it myself.”
“Oh, so we’re buying clothes, then?” Angie had thought of that, but in the end, she didn’t think it would help that much. Still, Nian seemed to know what she was talking about, and it was always fun shopping for new clothes to wear, so maybe it was worth a shot after all.
Their first stop gave her some doubts almost immediately, as a Rebbah with extensive facial piercings gave a feral smile upon their arrival. “Well, look what the Aslan dragged in. How’s it going, Nian?”
“Ah, you know how it is.” She gestured towards the Vulpo. “I’m actually buying something today, but for her, not me.”
“Really? Interesting. What can we do for you, little lady?”
It should be noted the shop clerk is a solid few inches shorter than Angie. “Um, well I’m looking for something that’ll get this guy in my office to notice me-”
“Say no more.” The Rebbah stepped out from behind her counter and ushered the pair deeper into the cavalcade of leather and cloth that was the apparel on offer. “Follow me. Do you know your sizes in Yen measurements?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She waved her hand. “Please, call me Becky. Let’s have those before I walk past too many more racks.”
For the next hour, Nian and Becky turned Angelina into a canvas to paint with belts, straps, studs, and occasionally actual fabric, eventually setting on a outfit that could probably double as light armor for someone with the Vulpo’s natural dexterity in a pinch. After a moment to get over the shock of seeing herself in something like this, there was no doubt in her mind that it was actually pretty badass, and since the Nian was the one buying anyway, there wasn’t any harm in taking it home with her. Things became a little more interesting when the Rebbah said she should probably wear it for the rest of the day to break it in, but if that was the professional recommendation, who was she to judge?
“I don’t know what I was expecting,” Angelina admitted as they left the store, “but I like it a lot more than I thought I would. You said you’ve never bought anything from there before, but Becky seemed to know you pretty well.”
“Usually the Doctor and I just browse and talk with the friendlier clerks. Becky gets a decent amount of business, but not a lot of conversation. How hungry are you?”
She shrugged. “I could eat right about now. It’s nearly time for lunch.”
“Then I know just the place.” Nian immediately turned down an alleyway. “How are you with spicy food?”
“Um, I like a little heat, but once it starts to hurt, that’s where I stop. Although there is this one brand of, like, pepper-flavored soda I can’t stop drinking.” The Vulpo glanced around, a little nervous about their current location.
The Nian stopped seemingly in the middle of everything and knocked four times on a seemingly random brick; a few seconds later, stone and steel began scraping against each other and themselves as a doorway-shaped part of the wall sunk into the sidewalk beneath them. “Well, this place has options if you’re not feeling adventurous.”
“Not feeling adventurous? What do you call this, then?” She traced along her current outfit with her free hand; the other had her normal clothes in a shopping bag. “Bring it on! I can take it!”
“Heheh. That outfit really boosted your confidence, didn’t it?” Nian had hoped it might. Angie was a nice girl, but just like everything in life, a little kick made her better.
Angelina smirked. “I guess it does. We going or not?”
“Alright, alright, keep your shirt on.” Not that she hadn’t seen it all already. “Oh, and there’s this chili pepper drink you have to try while you’re here.”
“Drink as in alcohol?...I guess a little wouldn’t hurt.”
A few hours later, Nian walked into the Doctor’s office with a leather-decorated Vulpo-balloon in her off hand. “We’re back! How was work?”
“Finished.” He looked up at his assistant, who waved from the ceiling. “Went to the Underbelly?”
“Yep! Did you miss me? I know I missed you~” The Nian let go of her, and Angelina floated over to her favoritest person ever to land in his lap.
As usual, this didn’t phase him. “New clothes?”
“Do you like them?” She leaned towards his face. “We got them for you~”
“I do.” And without a moment’s hesitation, he kissed her.
...Nian blinked, sure of what she’d seen but unsure if it’d been real. “Did you know this whole time and wanted to wait for her to make a move?”
“Yes.” That was the last word the Doctor said for a while, as Angelina didn’t need much more encouragement than that.
“Gotcha.” She stood there for a little bit before nodding to herself and leaving the office. ‘A job well done, I’d say...I wonder who else’s life can I change before dinner?’

PARADISE CITY (Axl Rose ) Part One
WARNING/S: LANGUAGE
"Where the fuck am I?" A woman who I had no idea who cursed out.
Same thoughts as mine. Yeah where the fuck am I?
I remember I was passed out drunk last night and I'm still even wearing my clothes. How the fuck did I get here?
"Ladies. I see you are now all aware." A woman who look like in her 40's suddenly appeared from out of nowhere. She's wearing a corporate attire but she she looks like she'd rather wear jeans and a shirt.
"Uhh yes we are and where are we? How did we got here?"
God, the woman who spoke looks like she could slay on the runway. There are atleast five of us here clueless as fuck why are we in a goddamn island and how did we got here.
"Sedation. You were sedated." She answered as if it was the best answer to calm our nerves, heck she is even smiling.
"Are you fucking kidding me? Is that even legal? Wait... is this a prank? Come on where are the cameras?" Said the woman who look like a biker, well she has this bad ass and chill vibe. And I agree with her. Is this some kind of reality show?
"Sorry about the sedation. I'm Beta by the way and you are in Paradise City. Don't worry you are safe here, the reason why you're here is......
Vacation. You just won a raffle."
What the fuck?! I don't remember betting or joining in a raffle contest.
"Sorry but I don't remember joining a raffle."
This time I was the one who spoke.
"It doesn't matter. Just enjoy your 3 month vacation, your families are well informed. So.... let's talk about the arrangement." I think I have  hangover. This is getting weirder, I mean I was just having the drink of my life last night then I woke up in a secluded island with girls who has the same fate with me? I mean I don't know what they were up to last night but they also end up here.
"W-wait....can you give us time to process this cause this blew my mind." The brunette one said. She's the only one who's brunette here, we're all blondes and we all look like casts of a reality show.
"Well I'll give you time. But let's talk about the arrangements first. So there are five of you and each one of you has your own respective villas, you can choose your places after this. We have the common room where you will all gather when you want to relax and spend your leisures, then the dining where everyone should be in the table at 7:00. This place has everything it's just up to you. Your things will be in your room after you chose. And expect a visitor from time to time." Beta winked after explaining this ridiculous arrangement. I wanted a vacation but for the love of god, this vacation might give me a heart attack. I might wake up tomorrow already in a damn submarine, who knows.
Nodding to Beta we went separate ways to choose our villas. I'm not picky so I don't mind whatever my place is. I just wander around the place to see how I'll spend my 3 month vacation here.
"Hey!" The brunette waved at me. I smiled back and said "Hey."
"Have you chosen a place?" She seems nice but I couldn't tell cause of her stoic expression.
"Anything will do."
I shrug off. The four of them probably had chosen already.
"You could have that one. That's the only villa left I think?" She points the one that is near the shore. It's not far from here but I gues it's the only one facing the beach. Oh boy the view will be very great.
"Thanks. Probably will be my place. I'm Charlie by the way." I extended my arm. "Aimee. See you around Charlie." Aimee blushed then she turned around and walked to her villa. Weird?
I went inside to my villa and checked out the whole place. The place gives me a Malibu vibe are we in Malibu? But I don't think so, this island seems like a private property.
"Hello Charlie, do you like your place?" Beta suddenly appeared from out of nowhere. Jesus. "Oh yes, yes thank you Beta." I smiled at her. "I really hope you will enjoy this vacation." I noticed the bags under her eyes, she look so stressed. "I'm sorry to ask this but what's the catch Beta? This ain't free right? A luxurious vacation in a private island? Heck even average resorts won't let this kind of privilege."
Beta turned around and faced the view of the sea. "Consider this as a way of helping me Charlie. A big great help." Beta sounded hopeless. Is she dying? Oh my god she wants us to inherit this island? "Weird but.. I hope you're not dying." I laughed because it was a joke. "Silly, I'm not. You should make friends with the other girls, and gotta go I have to check them. Your things are in your room by the way."
Beta winked and left afterwards. The villa is big for only a person, I can say it's spacious because I'm the only one here. Beta could've let us all stay in one big villa cause being alone sucks sometimes.
-----
Dinner came and all of us went to the dining. I get to know the other girls, Wesley the one who look like a biker, Susan, the model and yes she is a real high fashion model, no wonder she's tall and sexy plus she is.....well.... very blessed with bust. And Katherine, the charming one, the girl is smiling all day and she dyed her hair red. Bloody red, guess she noticed too that we're all blonde here. They're all nice Aimee is nice too but I guess she's just shy, she's the quiet one.
And me, I feel like I'm up to no good. All these women are successful, Susan is a model at the same time entrepreneur, Wesley owns a mechanic shop, Kath works in a cosmetic company and Aimee works in a computer company. While me, I'm a loud mouth motherfucker and I'm working as a roadie in Motley Crüe (thanks to my cousin Vince I finally had a decent job.)
"I think this vacation is not bad. We deserve a break."
We're currently in the patio having our chocolates.
"God yes. I'm tired of being surrounded by bunch of men who smelled like piss and coccaine." The girls laughed at my comment. I already miss the crüe but sometimes they get into my nerves and I just wish I could get away from their whiny asses.
"I guess I'm going to bed ladies. I'm exhausted. Goodnight see you tomorrow."
The rest of us agreed with Aimee and decided to go to bed too.
"Night babes. I'll deal with you all tomorrow."
I blew them a flying kiss and went to my villa.
I took off all of my clothes when I got inside and ran into the bathroom, I need a shower cause I haven't take a bath since I got here.
I am enjoying the flow of the water in my body when I heard Aimee screamed more like shriek. God that was piercing. I turn off the water, I wrap myself with a towel and went out of the bathroom.
"Oh, this is a delightful welcome from a long flight." His deep voice sent shivers down to my spine. And this time I screamed too.
"What the fuck?!!!!" I wrapped my arms protectively around myself because I'm still dripping wet and still clad only in towel.
Axl- motherfucking Rose is on my bed.
"What the fuck are you doing here?!"
He got up from the bed and walk towards me.
"I should be the one asking you that. What the fuck are you doing here Charlie?"
What the hell is happening. Why is he in this forsaken island?!
"I didn't even know how I got here Rose." I answered through gritted teeth.
Vince and Axl has this nasty feud aired over national t.v during MTV awards. It was supposed to be Izzy and Vince but Axl was an asshole. It was an after party and he tried to hit on me to fuel more Vince's anger towards him. I was drunk that time and I didn't knew they fought again. I just woke up the next morning in Nikki's room wearing someone else's shirt.
"Does dear cousin Vince knew you're here?" There was venom when he mentioned Vince.
Jesus, they are so childish.
"I don't know. I just woke up I'm in this forsaken island so god knows if they knew or not."
Axl stepped forward removing his shirt.
"What are you doing?"
He didn't bother to answer my question and unbuckled his belt, taking his pants off.
"Seriously Rose? If you took the last clothe you have I'm gonna fucking kick you in your balls."
Axl didn't seem to take my threat seriously and step closer towards me.
"What? I'm gonna take a shower too. Plus don't act like you haven't seen me naked. We did more than that." Axl winked at me and I blushed harder. What the fuck is he saying?
"W-what are you talking about?"
I cleared my throat, damn why did I stammer?
"I don't know. I was surprised though, you're here in my villa, wet and clad only in towel. Maybe I did something good this week?" That's it. He remove his underpants and my eyes widened. My mind screamed to run but I am stoned in my place in my eyes still locked to his.. package.
"Like what you see baby?"
I almost frown when he went inside the bathroom and locked the door. And it dawns me that he is freakin living in this place. And my clothes! God he saw my scattered clothes!
I cursed loudly when I realize this is fucked up. The place has only one room and a bed and he stays here and I stay here too.
"Betaaaaaaaaa!" After I put on my jammies I stormed out and searched for the mastermind of this plan.
Turns out I'm not the only one, the others are waiting too.
Wesley is frowning, Susan is only wearing robe, she was in bath too I guess, Katherine is biting her lip and Aimee is still in her clothes. I don't know what were their scenarios but I can tell they don't like the idea.

Hi Anna. First of all let me say that your post was brave to tell your opinion and a part of you. the other anon clearly didnt care abt what you had to say apparently - - ' [ im not english ther will be mistake sry ] Anyways i wanted to share My opinion too if thats ok. I agree completely that internalized homophobia (isnt) shouldnt be a trope, but sadly for me some or most bl shows "use it" a lot and in a "bad way". at least it used to be a loooot like that. like EVERYTIME a guy start to have
[2 / 4 . feeling for anothr, he uses violence! they all do! im so sick of it! people have so many layers and just punching someone for two episode and then getting with him for me thats not it… So i gues thats why some people are “fed up” abt this éstoryline’ its bc sadly its always done the same way. And on my part, I relate much much more to Tine (at laest at where we r now on the show). Bc for ones I feel like Im reliving the same emotions as him.]
[¾ . And its not happening right off the bat, its sllloowly and confusing and lots of interogation and curiosity. Bc yes bls are…what they are. *usually “StRaiGHtss” who suddenly fall for other guy, and all his friends too psshhhh. But with Tine (or 2gether) I feel its defferent. like i really see the process and its just just…wonderful?how it feels so reel bc i get it? bc he is the only one that doesnt beat himself up/disgusted. So i like this progress(???) in this bl bc it shows finally]
[4/4 . an OTHER WAY to deal w/ discovering urself. lol for me it took 7years to accept/understand that im not straight and my mom beeing a homophobe didnt help lol buttt… i still see myself. Take care of you. and if its not yet the case i really hope one day youll be proude of who you arethats why i didnt like bls at all. or ig just thai ones i guess? bc i watch other queer shows and i find them fine.] yes, straight people sometimes do really ruine things dont they xD (lol jk no offence)]
Hello!! Thank you for sharing your opinion with me!
I am also 100% against shows going the “violence” route as a response to confusion and internalized homophobia because it just makes no sense and it’s not fair that the two things get linked as if abuse would be a normal reaction to it. If you are confused about your feelings/sexuality and decide to take it out on someone with violence, that’s a big no no. Sadly some dramas have done that and it has always bothered me so much because it feels way too over the top and unrealistic. It’s a huge step from feeling grossed out with youself for being attracted to same sex people to deciding to beat someone up for it, one that most people wouldn’t make because normal decent humans don’t go around hurting people like that.
One point that I really wanted to make is that having and feeling internalized homophobia doesn’t make you a bad person. For example, Tine being so open and accepting of himself doesn’t make him any better than a character that would need some time to sort out his emotions and be okay with them. It’s not the same thing as being homophobic, which would entail being prejudiced and closed minded. As I said before, if the confused character decides to get violent with it then yeah he’s an asshole, but being confident and calm about your sexuality just makes you luckier than someone who isn’t, not better.
It is nice and refreshing to watch Tine slowly come to the realization that he likes Sarawat, he feels jealous when he’s surrounded by girls, he likes his company and he’s used to his flirting and welcomes it at this point. It’s nice that we haven’t seen him panic, he hasn’t needed any advice or consultation, he’s acting the way he would if he had found out he had feelings for a girl. I do like this because it makes the show feel lighter and more positive, and so far it’s not overdone to the point of being unrealistic. If all of his friends end up with boyfriends by the end of it I will be a bit annoyed though lmao. For example I think theory of love did a great job with balancing out the straight/gay relationships. I’m not saying I want a straight relationship in every show because that’s boring and unnecessary and if I wanted straight rep I’d watch literally any other show, but they just don’t need to make every single male character gay by the end of the show. Also give us lesbians I am begging you please
My experience with internalized homophobia is specific to being a lesbian, I identified as bi for a really long time and was completely fine with it, but would get extremely annoyed and defensive if someone questioned my attraction to males. I had to work a lot on it to realize that I have tons of internalized lesbophobia to the point where I can’t say I am a lesbian out loud (I’ve come out to a lot of my friends but I was never able to say it, I would have to use words like “I like girls” because the l word still makes me feel nauseous). All of this to say that I’ve known I’m not straight for over 10 years and yet I still can’t get past some stuff, and I’m tired of people acting like it makes me worse than people that are completely chill with it right off the bat.
I hope this was clear enough and didn’t offend anyone 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

(part 19 of ?; first; previous; next)
“Careful!”
Andrac, a massively-built young man with a great bushy beard, caught Katherine as her foot slipped; the rocks up here were ice-covered and slick in places, and even where they weren’t, it was hard to find a good footing. The last time Katherine had done any real hiking was years ago, in northern Italy, and there it had at least been sunny and warm. But Andrac and Eadwig had promised her dragons; how could she pass that up? More importantly, they had promised a way to maybe get her augs working again, or at least figure out what was wrong with them.
They were six days from the High Settlement, although between the treacherous terrain of the mountains and the darkness, it was probably not so far as it felt. Not long after Katherine and Ælfric had returned from the shipwreck on the coast, a party of scavengers had come back from a trek over the mountains; they had been visiting the ruins on the coast, far away down in Oates Land--the Hills of Broken Houses, to the Dry Valleys People--where they got most of their high-strength metal, the stuff that made for the best knives and chisels. A landslide had forced them to take a new route over the Transantarctic Mountains, and in the crossing they had found that rarest and most valuable thing of all: dragons.
Dragons? Katherine had asked. Dragons, the scavengers confirmed. Eadwig, Andrac’s brother, had nodded knowingly. Katherine demanded an explanation. Long ago, Eadwig had said, not long after the People had built their first houses in the Valleys, strange ships came to the coast. Great ships, that could be seen for miles off; they let smoke into the sky, and many men came ashore. They brought with them great machine-bones, which they assembled into hulking beasts; and they set those beasts loose on the glaciers, hunting for iron and gold and other treasures. At first they roamed the coast and the hills only; and then as time went on, they ranged further inland, and deeper into the mountains, high into Victoria Land. They sniffed out wealth in the ground and burrowed into it, digging it up for the men-from-the-ships; but they soon became a terrible danger to the People. The beasts were made to roam a land considered uninhabitable, devoid of people. Hunters who strayed into their path were easily killed. On more than one occasion, their path threatened to take them through the Valleys, potentially razing any settlement they came across. Only with great effort, and the loss of many lives, could they be crippled or destroyed, and such a catastrophe averted. You know. Dragons.
Over the centuries, many of these old beasts slowed, then ceased to move altogether. There were sometimes rumors, hunters who saw what looked like one of them moving far off in the distance. But they were considered much less of a threat now. More importantly, sometimes you could salvage things off their corpses you could find nowhere else: they were resilient, made to last decades on their own, made to repair themselves and stay in touch with the ships off the coast; some of the sharpest weapons and most useful machines the People possessed had been cobbled together from the bodies of these ancient beasts. Andrac and Eadwig got it into their heads to put together an expedition to the place the scavengers had described to them; they talked excitedly with Katherine and Leofe and the other villagers about it, and Katherine realized eventually that they wanted her to go with them.
At first, she laughed. “I don’t know anything about machines,” she said. “I’m no good to you.”
“No. You have to come,” Andrac said. He tapped his head. “For this.”
“You can tell me all about it when you get back. I look forward to hearing your tale.”
Andrac shook his head. “No, no. It’s not about the story.” This time he tapped the side of Katherine’s head. She made a face at him. “Thing in your head. The device. You want to fix it?”
“My augs? What does this have to do with my augs?”
“The dragons are old, but cunningly wrought. Many subtle devices. The old stories say, the men of the ships spoke to them with spells.”
Katherine was getting used to the metaphorical way the Dry Valleys People sometimes spoke. They used the language of poetry and magic for the technology of the outside world; it wasn’t that they were superstitious. Quite the opposite; but these were things largely outside their day-to-day experience, and so they used the words of things old and remote to them to describe them. Spells usually meant computers were involved somehow.
“They did not make the spells with their mind or hands,” Andrac added. “They used their heads. Like you.” He gestured at Katherine’s head again. Actually, the core aug systems were located in a little case at the base of her brain stem, in her neck; but close enough. She got the picture.
She was skeptical, but Andrac and Eadwig were insistent. There was a decent chance the main systems of the prospecting platforms could be reactivated; if so, there was a decent chance Katherine could run at least a basic diagnostic on her cybernetics. That was a chance it was too tempting to pass up, she decided. Hence, being in the mountains with Andrac, Eadwig, and a dozen other adventurous young men who wanted to see a dragon for themselves.
Katherine straightened up, found her footing, and kept going. She was near the middle of the pack; Eadwig was out ahead, scouting the way, and an extremely enthusiastic youth named Ceolred, who couldn’t have been a day over sixteen, was bringing up the rear. He was given the brightest lantern, so everyone in front of him could see where they were going; it cast a soft, warm light ahead of them.
“Hey! Almost there!” Eadwig’s shout bounced off the rocky slopes and slowly died in echoes; Katherine could just about make out his lantern-light on the top of the slope they were climbing. Already her lungs were burning and her chest felt like it was going to explode; the difficult footing wasn’t making things easier. She picked up the pace anyway. Better to get it over with. Andrac, beside her, was also breathing pretty heavily, which at least made her feel like she wasn’t the only one having no fun.
Before she’d left with the expedition, Katherine had had what was by far her most mysterious interaction with anybody here to date, including the ones from before she had any language in common with them. And strangest of all, it was with Leofe. She’d noticed after the trip with Ælfric that Leofe seemed to be avoiding her; at first, she thought she’d just been busy. Leofe’s usual role in the village was not taking in wayward strays like Katherine; it was helping her father keep track of the settlement’s stores, and to let the salvagers and hunters know what they needed the most when they went out on their expeditions. In the wintertime, she also seemed to have a side job teaching the little ones their numbers and letters. Katherine had peeked in the lessons, wondering how Leofe’s fairly harsh methods went over with the children, and to her surprise, had found that there were some parts of Leofe’s personality she did not know at all.
The schoolroom was one of the side-rooms of the settlement hall, one with lots of books and benches, and a big stack of writing-slates in the corner. Tapestries with colorful animal forms decorated the walls, and there was a big bright fire in the middle of the room that Leofe sat beside; surrounding her, on the benches and floors, was a gang of fifteen or twenty kids ranging from somewhere around six to ten years old; she was reading to them from a book in her lap, in a bright, clear voice, pausing often to answer their questions patiently, and at length. She looked, in fact, happier than Katherine ever saw her the rest of the time. And when she saw Katherine standing at the door, looking on, she didn’t seem embarrassed or self-conscious at all; she just nodded and smiled, and went back to reading.
Still, Katherine noticed, Leofe seemed suddenly to have no time for her. She was around much less at the evening meals, the ones everyone usually ate together in the hall. When Katherine did run into her, she was always hurrying off somewhere else; and Katherine soon got the impression she had done something to piss her off. She’d try to make small talk, and Leofe would answer curtly or not at all, before making her excuse to go; and when she tried to ask Leofric what was up with his sister, he only shrugged. “I ask myself that often,” was all he said. So that was no help.
Finally, the night before Andrac and Eadwig’s expedition set out, Leofe came up to Katherine after the evening meal.
“You’re going tomorrow with the others?” she asked.
“I am,” Katherine said.
“You shouldn’t.”
“They said they need me,” Katherine said. “I’d hate to disappoint.”
“They’re idiots. You shouldn’t go.”
Katherine was puzzled. Leofe definitely seemed annoyed at her, and she had no idea why.
“Why not? I can be helpful, and maybe I’ll get something out of it. Andrac seems to think I might be able to find something to help fix my augs.”
“Your augs are stupid, and you don’t need them,” Leofe said. “Going with Andrac is stupid. It’s dangerous, and you’ll probably die.”
Katherine was taken a little aback by this. “I don’t think it’s that dangerous. We’ll have a lot of experienced salvagers with it, and we won’t be more than seven or eight days out.”
“But you’re not a salvager. You’re not a mountain-climber. You’re not like us. And you’re even weaker than you are with your cybernetics. You should stay, and not get yourself or somebody else hurt.”
“I thought I didn’t need my augs?”
“You don’t, but you haven’t learned that lesson properly yet.”
Katherine thought about this for a second. Leofe was clearly not an indirect person by habit, but there was definitely something bothering her she wasn’t telling Katherine, and maybe that bluntness was rubbing off on her a little. Because she was not at all in the mood to play a guessing game about what it was.
“Leofe, what did I do to piss you off? Why are you so irritated with me?”
Leofe just shook her head. “I’m not irritated with you. I don’t care at all. Just giving you advice. You shouldn’t go. You’re not one of us, and you shouldn’t try to be.”
“What do you--” Katherine started to say; but Leofe just walked off.
Fucking hell, she thought. She tried not to let it bother her too much; but even after all this time in the Valleys, Leofe felt like one of her few real friends, and it would have been a lie to say it was not painful to find herself feeling very alone again.
The party crested the ridge a few minutes later; Eadwig pointed out their destination Katherine. Ahead, nestled between this ridgeline and the next, was a small glacier-filled valley; at the top, only a couple of hundred meters away, wedged into a crevasse in the ice and half-covered with rubble, was a hulking splayed-legged form, like a big tailless lizard. The dragon. Another limb seemed to stick out of the rubble further on; a second, perhaps lured in by the same ground scans as the second. Beonna, their most seasoned scavenger, seemed more interested in the deeply buried one; he seemed to think its components would be in better shape, despite the rockfall. At this point, though, Katherine mostly just wanted to rest.
They had to make their way down to the dragons even more slowly. The slope was mostly loose scree, and nobody wanted to go ass-over-elbows into the darkness below. It took almost an hour of careful, single-file descent, until they came to the place where the ice met the rock, and were able to follow that margin to the dragons themselves. After that it was a short break, only five minutes, and the others began setting up a camp and building a fire. Katherine, for her part, sat panting on a rock, still trying to catch her breath.
“No time to get too lazy,” Eadwig said with a smile as he passed by. “We have work to do soon!” Katherine just nodded and gave him a thumbs up. Maybe Leofe was right. Maybe she wasn’t as tough as the others. But they hadn’t brought her along for her toughness, so she didn’t feel too bad.
When the camp had been set up, they started crawling all over the dragon’s corpse, trying to see what sort of condition it was in. Once she was feeling a bit more human, Katherine got up and walked over to see what she could make of the thing.
“Dragon” was actually not a bad word for one of these mobile prospecting platforms. It was unbelievably huge, more than two hundred meters long, and indeed shaped like a mythological beast. Its main digging section resembled a pair of jaws, enclosing a great toothed wheel; here, they were crushed and splayed open by enormous boulders. Supporting pylons on its back stuck out above the rocks, and two of its big elephantine feet were stuck in the ice. The thing looked like it could eat mountains.
“Over here!” Beonna called. “Hey! Outlander! You too!”
Katherine followed his voice. She clambered up the metal flank of the platform, grasping for handholds, until she found an actual ladder; Beonna was standing with Andrac and a few others right on the beast’s spine, beneath one of the tall pylons. He pointed down at his feet. There was a hatch there; and next to it, a small control panel.
“You think you can talk to this?” Beonna said.
“I’m not a wizard, but I’ll give it a shot.” Katherine was trying to be funny, but Beonna just nodded seriously. She looked at the control panel. It had some big, colorful buttons on it, with abbreviations that didn’t mean anything to her; and a screen that was intact, but dead. There was a thin metal cover to the side that she could pop off; beneath that was an array of ports. Katherine would not say she had more than average knowledge of computers, and she knew nothing at all about autonomous mining machines, but she did recognize a basic BCI when she saw one. Nestled in among the ports was a long, thin, whiplike piece of plastic, with a sharp tip. A neural splice. She tugged at it gently; it extended with little resistance, just enough spring to draw itself back into the panel when it wasn’t in use.
“Well, here goes nothing,” she said to herself. She pulled back the hood of her cloak and yanked off one glove; then, feeling carefully with two fingers for the right spot, she took a deep breath, and jabbed the sharp end of the splice into the back of her neck.
It hurt like a bitch, of course, because she couldn’t deaden the area, and the cold seemed to make it even worse; but she’d aimed correctly despite the bad angle, and the splice seated itself neatly the first try. Good thing, too; she had not liked the idea of having to stab blindly into her spine on the back of a desolate glacier. Now to find out of this thing was still functional. She called up a few basic activation sequences, in order by how common they were. Three red squares. A big hollow blue triangle. Green thumbs up? Think, Kate. Old system. Basic BCI. One large, red circle.
The screen lit up, a solid white square.
“Yes!”
Katherine’s triumph was immediately cut off by a stabbing pain in her forehead.
“Fuck!”
She screamed loud enough that for a second she thought Beonna was going to fall off his perch; but it was all she could do not to curl up into a little ball and start crying right there. The pain ran down from her head and into her spine, and for a second, it felt like every nerve ending in her body was on fire. Then, just as suddenly as it had come, the pain almost entirely subsided, leaving behind a low-grade throbbing headache. A mishmash of symbols and technical jargon flashed in front of her eyes, then was replaced by a series of Critical warning! messages moving rapidly through her field of view.
“Are you all right?” Andrac asked.
Katherine smiled, then laughed, then clutched her head because laughing made her headache worse; then she laughed again anyway.
“I’m better than alright,” she said. “I’m back in action, baby.”
* * *
Whoever had built this machine had clearly foreseen the possibility of some lost soul relying on it in an emergency. Once the console was active, Katherine was able to work out how to pop the hatch, and they squeezed inside. The space was cramped--a little more than a short hallway, a small control cabin, and some lockers stocked with emergency supplies and rations that had long ago crumbled to dust. But there was an extremely basic aug maintenance kit in among the first aid supplies, and another neural splice that this time was at least out of the wind. Katherine found a bulky hard-copy manual labeled Your Neural Interface and You, with a cartoon brain on the front giving her a deeply unnerving thumbs up. From what she could piece together, the dragon--sorry, the LMK Autonomous Mining Platform Mk. 7--had been designed so somebody with a third gen or better neural lace could run diagnostics and do basic software maintenance. Katherine’s augs were built on what was probably a ninth or tenth generation lace, and by comparison to the crude interface third gens offered, were considerably more sophisticated, but, importantly, it still relied on a basic support layer that used the same instruction set as a third gen. Which meant she could use the platform’s built-in safety and recovery features, if not to try and fix her entire aug set, at least troubleshoot the support layer. And maybe help the scavengers out, too.
Unfortunately, she had to spend the first three hours sorting through error messages. The bulk was Fatal Error: See Medical Professional Immediately! spam that just meant her main augs were offline. Medical monitoring, cardiopulmonary maintenance, neurological maintenance and stimulus management, etc, etc.; nothing she hadn’t been living without for weeks or months by now. Once she dismissed all these messages, and switched off the processes that kept trying to reboot these augs, the worst of her headache, and the tingling feeling all over her body that occasionally got replaced with hot and cold flashes, subsided. She tried to access the cortical aug suite, the thing that would have helped her most when she was trying to learn the local language, but even trying to call them up in safe mode gave her a splitting headache and more stabbing pains all over her body. Okay, fine. She took them offline for good. Not going to try that again without a doctor standing over me, she thought.
Eventually, she had managed to shut down every single higher process in her cybernetics, leaving only the support layer, an interface layer, and the networking layer active. By the time she’d got to this point, everyone else was getting ready to tuck in for the night; Andrac offered Katherine a sleeping spot near the campfire, but Katherine declined. She didn’t want to risk having to start this process all over in the morning, so she curled up in the cramped little cabin of the mining platform, dug some chemical heating packs out of the supply locker, and did her best to doze with her brain still plugged into the machine. She slept pretty well, all things considered; though she did have unsettling dreams about being inside the belly of a monster.
In the morning, Andrac brought her some food, and she went back to work. By flipping back and forth through the manual she managed to piece together a series of commands to try to boot the platform’s main control system. All the peripheral systems were basically nonfunctional--which was just as well, what on earth would the DVP do with even a partially operational earthmover the size of a small freighter?--but the main control system had the diagnostic tools Katherine needed, and it also meant easier access to the interior of the machine. To Andrac’s delight, she was able to pop every hatch and secure panel at once; she also disabled the “autonomous threat response protocol,” just in case that was as dangerous as it sounded.
“The beast is yours,” Katherine announced. “Just don’t touch the power plant. I’m pretty sure it’s radioactive, and I need it to fix my augs anyway.” They did not need to be told twice. As the others in the party hacked and sawed and drilled away, Katherine turned her attention to a little brain surgery.
Okay, technically not surgery surgery. And technically not her brain--not the really important bits, anyway. But there was something undeniably primitive-feeling about trying to muck around with her cybernetics using a keyboard and text display, like she really was messing with the elemental components of her mind. She did in some sense think of her augs as part of her; one of her favorite parts, since they were relatively customizable. She had never made any conscious choice about her eye color or her height, for instance; but she had built up her personal aug set piece by piece over the years, like furnishing a living room. Or carefully curating a wardrobe.
Unless you were like the Dry Valleys People--hard baseline, that is--everybody these days relied on some degree of augmentation. But the ucytes, the stuff you got when you were a kid along with your immunizations and your retroviral therapy, they hardly warranted the term “cybernetics.” They were little more than artificially engineered white blood cells, boosting your immune system and protecting your metabolism and helping cuts and scrapes heal faster. Almost everybody, when they were a teenager, opted for one form or another of actual cyberization. You could program somebody’s ucytes to grow a neural lace within the space of a couple years, and then a doctor could implant what was basically a compact computer in the spine that connected to the lace. From there, more systems could be developed, more augs installed, depending on what you wanted or could afford. Some people liked to really self-modify--if you signed enough waivers and paid enough money, there were augs that could heavily modify emotions and brain function and senses, almost everything about your subjective experience of being human. Most people ended up like Katherine--five or six extremely useful aug suites they relied on in their day-to-day life, one or two more rarely useful ones, and some emergency and medical augs, which hopefully you never needed but which could save your life if disaster struck.
Only a neglectful or extremely paranoid parent would forego the ucyte injection for their child; Katherine’s parents were softly against more elaborate cyberization, but once she’d left home, she didn’t have to worry about their opinion. And they had not more than grumbled when she’d finally had the procedure done. More elaborate augs had never interested her, and she was counting herself very fortunate in that regard now. She was starting to realize how well and truly fucked her cybernetics were; if she had been too dependent on them, she might not have survived their breakdown.
The core problem seemed to be the neural lace. Katherine had suffered a blow to the head; the medical support system had done its job and prevented a concussion, but the fragile lace was damaged in the process, and couldn’t repair itself. The repair protocols for the lace were extremely limited by design--there were horror stories of early lace designs going haywire in lab animals--but damage to the lace meant most of her other augs simply couldn’t function properly. One or two, maybe, she could force, in a way that would probably void their warranty and put her at risk of seizures or worse, but she was not at all inclined to try. She could keep her cybernetics functioning at their most basic level, and maybe later try to jury-rig something crude using the default instruction set, something that would at least help her manage sensory input and metabolic function, but there was still the risk of something going wrong, of her having to perform some kind of maintenance she was deeply unqualified to attempt.
She sighed deeply. The only sane, responsible thing to do in this situation was to turn all her cybernetics off, in a more orderly fashion this time, and leave them off until she could get to an aug clinic or, preferably, a real hospital. The closest aug clinic was Port Alexander. The closest hospital with a cybernetics ward? That would depend on whether New Zealand or South America was technically closer. Katherine couldn’t remember. She was not, she knew, in the habit of always doing the sane and responsible thing. There was an argument to be made she would not be here at all if sane and responsible was her usual approach. But maybe it was time to give it a try. She entered the manual shutdown sequence; there was no tone this time. The text readout on the console just went blank. She pulled the neural splice out of her neck, and fished around in the supply locker for a band-aid; then she climbed to her feet and went outside to see if she could help take anything apart.

playing pretend.
Tumblr media
it’s funny how finding out a single thing can change everything.
ROSELLA DIDN’T KNOW how long she’d been poring over the old archives, searching for something that might seem familiar to her, but she’d come up with nothing, and was that really surprising ?? she barely knew what she was supposed to be looking for in the first place. all she’d learned through what she could understand ( which was a decent amount for a girl of eight years ) was more about the isle of the lost, and just how horrible a place it was.
all she had known growing up was that it was a place where ❛ bad people go ❜, at least according to her teachers, but her parents had never liked the idea of it, and so she hadn’t, either. she had never had a personal attachment to the place.
          until now.
she wasn’t stupid. she’d known from an even younger age that she was adopted. she looked nothing like her parents, or her extended family in corona. she had always been different, and her parents had always been upfront with her when she asked, and so she hadn’t had any problems.
that was until she’d been walking past the parlour and heard her name mentioned in a loud scottish accent, which of course meant it could only belong to lady kluck. always nosy when her name was mentioned, she’d been about to go inside when she actually caught the gist of the conversation.
❝ you have to tell her eventually, marian, she already knows she’s adopted. she’ll find out sooner or later, and it’s best that she hears it from you. ❞
❝ i know, i know. ” her mother sounded so resigned, voice soft compared to lady kluck’s. ❝ i just wish i knew how to answer the questions she’ll probably have. there are so many, i... ❞
❝ relax, lovey, she’s a good kid. she’ll understand. you and robin have taught her well. it doesn’t matter if her parents are on the isle. they weren’t people with bad intentions, it was an accident, they were threatened. they wanted the best for their daughter, and so do you. she’ll see that. ❞
❝ she is, and i really hope so. ❞
rosella had stopped paying attention the moment lady kluck mentioned the isle. when she’d asked a few years ago where her biological parents were, her mother had hesitated a moment before telling her they’d ‘ had to go away, but they love you, and would have taken care of you if they could. ’ now everything made so much more sense.
but if her parents were from the isle, who they ?? and who was she ??
which led her to now. there was a list of names of people who had been sent to the isle, but she couldn’t make heads or tails of it, especially since she didn’t even know her parents’ names. she’d tried researching about the isle, and while she hadn’t learned anything relevant to her problem, she’d succeeded in making herself feel worse than she already was. so many children had been forced onto the isle with their parents. what made her so different ?? if they deserved to be there ( which she didn’t think they did, really ), then shouldn’t she, too ??
          ❝ your highness ?? ❞
the voice snapped her out of her thoughts, and she looked up at the maid beside her. she was smiling, as most of the castle staff did. they were treated well with more than adequate wages, and robin and marian were flexible employers, so why wouldn’t they be ??
but did their job include keeping this big isle secret ?? rosella couldn’t be sure.
once it was obvious that she was paying attention, the maid said, ❝ it’s time for dinner, your parents are waiting for you. ❞
rosella forced a smile and closed the books, turning them on their fronts as she did so the titles couldn’t be seen. ❝ thanks, i’ll be right there. ❞
SOMETIMES DINNER WAS loud, mainly when lady kluck was there, and little john, too, since he and her dad were always bantering back and forth. tonight, it was just herself and her parents, which was the perfect opportunity for her to ask questions.
she was subdued for most of the dinner, which was already strange. she was usually so animated, telling her parents what she’d done that day, asking what was going on in town and the like. tonight there was none of that.
her parents shared several concerned looks over the course of the meal until robin finally spoke up. ❝ rosella ?? is something wrong ?? ❞
❝ when were you gonna tell me i’m supposed to be on the isle ?? ❞
well, there it was, she supposed. she wasn’t really known for beating around the bush, and it was even worse at her current age. children were already known for having no filter, and for her, it was even worse.
marian let out a soft gasp, most likely realising that she and lady kluck hadn’t been as discreet as she’d thought. rosella couldn’t see her face. she was too focused on frowning at her plate.
❝ you’re not supposed to be on the isle, ❞ marian said. she leaned over the table to rest her hand on rosella’s. ❝ you’re supposed to be here, with us. ❞
❝ but my parents are there. my real parents. ” rosella’s hand curled into a fist beneath her mother’s. ❝ and when parents go to the isle, their kids go, too. so why didn’t i go ?? ”
robin and marian shared another look and rosella wished they’d stop. it wasn’t reassuring, and she was so busy trying to figure out what they were thinking that she almost missed when robin said, ❝ we met your parents right before they were taken away. you were only a few days old, they asked us to take you. they didn’t want you to have to live on the isle. we promised we’d raise you as our own, and so we are, and we will. ❞ he smiled at her. ❝ you’re still our daughter. ❞
❝ this doesn’t change anything, ❞ marian promised with a kind smile.
EXCEPT IT DID change things. not with her parents or home, but with everything outside of it.
the first time she went to a royal event after the revelation was difficult. all it took was one look at the fancy gowns, the delicious food, the high profile people for her to realise she didn’t belong there. it hadn’t been a problem when she’d found out she was adopted. she wasn’t the only royal child who’d been adopted, after all. but now it was different, because she was certain she was the only one who was supposed to be on the isle.
❝ go find your friends, ❞ marian said as she waved to queen eilonwy. ❝ you haven’t seen them in a little while, have you ?? i’m sure they’d love to see you. ❞
rosella nodded, but didn’t move, even after her mother had disappeared into the crowd. perhaps her friends would be happy to see her, but if they knew the truth, then surely, they wouldn’t be. she didn’t have to tell them, but she couldn’t pretend that everything was fine, right ??
she walked along the edges of the room, avoiding the dance floor and the food tables, feeling like a lone ant in a big city. she didn’t belong here, that much was obvious. even seeing her friends didn’t change things. everything was as it always was, with theo and emrys bickering in the corner, izzy falling asleep on her food while rosie tried waking her up, olyssia forcing all her friends in the immediate vicinity to dance with her. yet everything felt different.
they hadn’t changed, but rosella had.
it was that realisation that started the domino effect of her avoiding everyone. she didn’t want to be their friend, only for them to find out that she was keeping such a big thing from them and have them reject her. she knew that most of them didn’t like the isle, that they would likely be nice to the children there if they met them, but this was different. she was masquerading as one of them. she was being something she wasn’t.
so the best option was to keep to herself as much as possible. she would only go to meet with them if her parents forced her to, and even then she would keep to herself. finding places to escape to during royal events became a talent after a while, and she would spend entire parties without talking to anyone, then pretending she did when her parents asked. they knew. they had to know that something was wrong, but she would shut them down whenever they tried to talk about it. no one was about to get her to changed her mind.
she was eventually cornered in the bathroom at one of cordelia’s events. perhaps ❛ cornered ❜ wasn’t the right word, though, because helena would never do anything so aggressive.
rosella was staring at herself in the mirror when helena walked in, a soft smile on her lips, clad in an olyssia original. they probably all were tonight. rosella was now exception, as much as she’d tried to resist, because olyssia was pushy.
helena smiled at her, a gesture rosella didn’t return, mainly because she could barely look her in the eye. ❝ hi, rosella, are you enjoying yourself ?? ❞
❝ yeah, ❞ rosella lied, half-hearted. ❝ you guys have good parites. ❞ that part wasn’t a lie.
helena’s smile grew at the compliment, but it soon faded away, replaced with a look of concern. rosella knew that look because she’d seen it on her mother plenty of times over the last few months, and she knew what was coming.
❝ did we... did we do something wrong ?? ❞ helena asked softly.
❝ no, ❞ rosella said, maybe a little too quickly, but it was the truth.
helena seemed to accept her answer, nodding slowly, but she wasn’t done. rosella could tell. ❝ we’re just... we’re a little worried about you. you haven’t seemed yourself lately. ❞
too bad rosella didn’t know what ❛ being herself ❜ even meant anymore.
❝ just know that if you ever need anything, you can talk to us. ❞ helena hesitated a moment. ❝ even if i’m not the best at giving advice -- and it doesn’t have to be me. i’m sure any of the others would be willing to listen to you. ❞
rosella forced a smile. it was a small one, maybe even a sad one, but it was something. ❝ thanks, helena. ❞
helena curtsied quickly, her version of a ❛ you’re welcome ❜ before leaving back the way she came. rosella waited for the door to shut before turning to the mirror again, and it was no wonder that helena and the others were worried about her. there were bags under her eyes ( from worrying about the party all last night ) and her dress didn’t quite fit right ( because she’d refused to come into the city for olyssia to measure her, so she’d had to guess how much she’d grown since last time ).
she felt like a four year old’s dess-up doll.
she felt like a sardine amidst a school of angelfish.
she felt like a criminal among nobles.
her fingers curled around the sink, nail polish scratching off and sticking to the basin. her grip was so tight that she thought she might break it. the only reason she let go was because she didn’t think she would be able to face the charmings if she did.
SHE WAS ABLE to hold her emotions in throughout the remainder of the party and during the ride home, though her father could tell something was wrong. he always could. still, he didn’t question her about it, also knowing she would likely lie and say she was fine.
the moment they pulled up outside the castle, she jumped out and ran through the double doors, ignoring her mother’s calls behind her. she didn’t want to speak to them. she didn’t want to speak to anyone.
she ignored all the maids and butlers, ignored little john as she rushed past him on the stairs, ignored everyone and everything until she was safe inside her room. but that didn’t change anything. the feelings didn’t go away and she let out the screech she’d been keeping inside since seeing herself in the mirror.
she tossed her tiara to the side of the room and ripped the skirt of her dress until the flower pattern was completely ruined. she would regret it in the morning when she woke up with dried tears on her face and her hair in knots, but for now, she needed to let it all out, and let it out she would.
because she wasn’t a princess. she was just playing pretend.

Man Buns, Hipster Glasses and Tweed || Annabeth and Percy
Annabeth and Percy indulge in some activism before the raid on the Open Hearth.
Percy looked out across the sea of mostly familiar faces. He had been the one who had brought Alex and Hailey Pritchard to Camp Half Blood with Annabeth after empousai had killed their satyr protector. He had been the one to convince Will Solace to go to medical school here. This place held the best memories of his life and he wasn’t about to give it up. But possibly the best thing was that he wasn’t in charge of any of it. For the first time in a long time he was just part of the team. As he held up a cardboard sign that read a very quippy line about Greek Pride, he couldn’t help but beam with pride. Activism was something that he’d always been interested in, but now he was actually working towards a goal that actually mattered. “Blossom has done a good job with this,” he said as he slipped his fingers in between Annabeth’s and held her hand, pressing a kiss to her cheek as they all waited for the march to begin, “I know the situation is far from ideal, but at least we made it here, at least we are doing something and we can show everyone that this is a serious movement. We are here to stay.” There was so much more that he was there for, he was here to protect the family he didn’t have yet. He was here because New Rome was his home and had been for several years now.
At first, Annabeth hadn’t hesitated when she’d heard of the march exhibiting Greek Pride. It didn’t seem a question as to whether or not she would be one to stand up for herself and her fellow Greeks. But later thought had gotten her thinking that perhaps they were only instigating things further. Were they only widening the divide by doing this? Doing more harm than good? But the she’d caught sight of Percy’s smile and known they were right to march. If they didn’t stand up and say that they were here to stay, things would most certainly become worse.  The Romans would most likely think the Greeks were perfectly alright with being rolled over, and having their places of business vandalized. “I think we’ve got a regular Susan B. Anthony on our hands. The B obviously stands for Blossom.” So here she was with an equally snappy sign and a smile as Percy placed a kiss on her cheek with the warmth of his hand in her’s. She had used her full array of colored markers and favorite ruler to make sure their signs looked impeccable. “We are here to stay.” She couldn’t help but think of the implication of the words, the notion that it could include her and Percy leading a life here in New Rome for many years to come...together. “I have to say, Percy. Activism is a decent look for you.” She was quite proud of the showing up they had done today.
Smirking gently, Percy had to admit that this was a lot more fun than he had thought that it would be. Blossom’s idea was brilliant really, by raising money for the Senate House they demonstrated that they were not only dedicated to the regeneration of New Rome, but that they were also more than willing to do what was necessary to secure their place in the city. He just hoped that the Romans and the Greeks would be able to work together. They had gone through so much in the last couple of years and he couldn’t imagine what they would do if they were lose all of that now. “Of course we are,” he replied with a smile. As the march set off, Percy followed the current of people that was winding its way away from the forum and towards the eastern district. Percy knew the way well, their apartment was in the eastern district. It was cheaper, mainly because it was an area populated by students and greek members of the community. He loved it here. “I think that you look much better as an activist,” he replied with a bright laugh and a gentle smile, brushing his hair out of his eyes, his smile slid into a smirk. “You just need some cute nerdy glasses, little round turtle shell rimmed ones, and then we’d have a perfect little prissy activist. But let’s not mention the years of military training.”
There was no one Annabeth smiled as much around as she did with Percy. Already he had garnered many a grin from her with his dorky jokes and flirty lines, and his latest one was no exception as a chuckle fell from her lips. “Cute nerdy glasses? Are you saying I could use improvement?” She narrowed her eyes at him, as if challenging him to say yes. The word prissy wasn’t particularly offensive to her as he said. “If you’re using prissy as another word for knowing what you want and being able to take it. Then I accept this.” If prissy was the word that came to mind when he was speaking of a badass girl who fought for her right to stay, she would take it gladly. “What? Is this some new sexual fantasy of your’s? A prissy activist?” She gave him a once over, as if judging his get-up. “And what about you? I can’t be the only one needing a makeover. Where are you thick-rimmed oversized glasses? You’re locally sourced tweed trousers? Not to mention your man-bun.” She tutted her tongue at him. “And you call yourself an activist.”
Raising an eyebrow gently at her reply Percy couldn’t help the smirk that crossed his face in reply to Annabeth’s comments, he knew that she was joking and that was what made their relationship so perfect. But her laugh was so beautiful that he couldn’t ignore it at a moment like this. “Everyone could use a little bit of improvement, but for you, it is only that you don’t quite have perfect eyesight…” he trailed off for a second before relenting, “I’m joking.” He gave her a warm smile and shrugged. “Well, I’m a very sexually liberated man, I may not have the locally sourced tweed and I may be missing a septum piercing and several anarchist tattoos, and I’ve not read the communist manifesto, but I like to think that I am at least allowed to want to see you in nothing but reading glasses and pigtails…” he gave her another signature lopsided smile. He must have given it to her a hundred times today, but he couldn’t help it. The march was winding it’s way through New Rome and Percy was thoroughly enjoying himself. “Although, I’ll admit that I am enjoying activism, I think it looks good on us.”
Annabeth rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, which was probably the second most popular reaction he drew from her after smiling, of course— though sometimes they went hand in hand as they were doing now. “I know you’re joking Seaweed Brain,” she paused to raise her sign higher over her head. “I have perfect eyesight. Just like I have perfect everything.” Percy was the one person she would say most anything around, and still feel comfortable. There was rarely a time when she had to think twice about her words when around him. Such was a by-product of knowing one another for so long...as well as being extremely comfortably in love. “Reading glasses and pigtails?” She raised an inquisitive eyebrow at him. “Well maybe if you play your cards right…” her words and tone trailed off suggestively. As they rounded another bend of the streets of New Rome, there came a show of anti-protestors, holding signs that were calling for Greeks to either learn their place or go home and other similar messages. Pursing her lips, she turned away from the offensive signs, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of seeing the bubbling irritation in her stormy gray eyes. “I don’t understand what threat they think we are or whatever,” she said under her breath to Percy.
Percy smirked gently as Annabeth said that she had perfect everything, it wasn’t that it was funny it was just that it was true. “Well I’ve seen you naked well practically on a daily basis at this point so I can more than agree that you have perfect everything,” he said with a bright laugh as he kept marching, “that is why I am so very lucky to have you.” He shifted his sign so that the front was facing the back and the back was facing the front and went back to marching as he did his very best not to think about what Annabeth had been suggesting. That would have to wait till later tonight. The march for the first time hit protests against it and Percy found himself wondering the exact same thing as Annabeth. “I can’t say that I particularly understand it if I’m honest with you. All the money that we are raising is to help them so why do they want us out so badly?” It was a hard feeling, being rejected by the one place that you wanted to accept you. He had struggled with friends growing up but nothing on this scale, it felt like a whole community was against them.
Annabeth laughed along with Percy for another moment before shifting her sign to get a better grip on it. Part of her was wondering what they’d be doing with the signs once the march was completed. If they were to throw them away, she wasn’t entirely sure how easily she’d part with them. Even though they were a much simpler project, they were a project nonetheless. Though Annabeth was generally notoriously organized...that didn’t mean she didn’t have a slight hoarding problem. “You’re right about you being lucky.” Percy would know she was teasing...even if her rather healthy ego saw some truth in her words. Suddenly being rejected by the Romans also had Annabeth somewhat anxious in addition to being annoyed. Though it seemed a rather impossible though, if the Romans did somehow get rid of the Greeks as they seemed to wish to do...where would she and Percy go? She knew they’d be welcomed back to Camp Half-Blood to an extent, but what about as they continued to age? New Rome was the only place demigods could actually lead entirely safe lives. “Exactly! And who knows how much longer the fire might have gone on if the Greeks hadn’t been there to help. The Romans did a lot of work but- it would have taken them even longer to douse the flames if we hadn’t been there.”
Shrugging gently to her, Percy wondered how much luck he had had when he’d been trying to save the world every other month. “I’ve always been lucky I guess,” he replied, “especially since you’re still here, my luck obviously hasn’t run out yet.” The whole problem was a lack of understanding a general ignorance that made him worry. What would they do if what they feared came to pass, their were humanitarian laws to stop mortals from doing things like this but who would police the demigod community if something were to happen. So far the Gods hadn’t gotten involved and Percy expected that they wouldn’t want any part in this. “They don’t seem to realise that we are here to help them out, they just all seem so afraid that we have a hidden motive and agenda.” He bit his lip and sighed as they approached the Open Hearth. “We have to prove them wrong.”
“Stop that,” Annabeth told Percy as he continued to agree with her, shoving him lightly though her smile persisted. “I might start to think you like me.” As they continued to march, they passed the rather impressive and splendid skyline of New Rome. Camp Half-Blood had been the first place she had felt most comfortable to call home, and was most certainly where her heart would always lie— apart from with Percy, but New Rome had also become her home. It wasn’t simply her newest home being placed into jeopardy, but their future as well. And if the Romans thought they could take such a thing from her and her friends, they were sorely mistaken. “We will prove them wrong. We’ve got nothing to hide. And we know that Reyna and Frank don’t want the Greeks gone, so no matter what happens we have the support of the praetors.” Though the discovery of the Greek Fire as the start of the Senate House fire had been rather unfortunate. But there was also a part of Annabeth that wondered if it had even been Greek Fire that was responsible. She wouldn’t put it past the Romans to try and frame the Greeks by ‘claiming’ that a notoriously greek weapon had been the cause of it. Who was to say the fire hadn’t actually been an accident, and the Romans were taking advantage of said accident?
“Oh don’t worry wise girl,” Percy replied with a bright smirk crossing his face, “I don’t just like you, I think that it is pretty obvious that it is much much more than that…” he thought back to their conversation about kids. This was the best place for them to raise kids and that was all being put in jeopardy. “That does make me feel better, and we’ve got Jason too, he has some swing left in him, at least I hope so…” he trailed off and rubbed his eyes. He was almost always tired, but with everything going on it was more difficult than ever for him to get to sleep. “I don’t know why there are so many of them that can’t stand us, we’ve only ever attacked the city once and that was a dumb accident, it wasn’t Leo’s fault he was possessed….” he trailed off once more and sighed sadly, wishing that there was more that he could do to change the situation that they were in. As he reached the steps up to the Open Hearth he was received by more Greeks and college students who clapped him on his shoulder and greeted him and Annabeth warmly. These were his people and he wanted to protect them but part of him wondered if he was ever going to be able to do it. Was this a task that was too big?
“Gross,” Annabeth joked once more, though the smile in her eyes spoke to how she was truly pleased by his words. Of course she knew that Percy loved her, but that didn’t mean she got tired of hearing it. His mention of Jason had her uncertain though. Obviously, she loved Jason dearly— him being the closest thing she had to a brother, but she couldn’t help but remember how the dead Roman soldiers had refused to listen to him all those years ago in the Necromanteion. If they had already begun to question Jason that time ago...who was to say live Roman soldiers wouldn’t start to do so as well? But she shouldn’t be thinking of this right now. Today was a time for fun and pride, and she tried to shake off the heavier conversation for the moment, though her mind continued to whirl around the subject. “Speaking of Leo. How many drinks do you think it’ll be before he accidentally lights something on fire at the Open Hearth?”
The entire situation put Percy on edge, he couldn’t believe that things had gotten as bad as they had already and he hated seeing it get any worse. That was why he was fighting for this, he was doing absolutely everything in his power to make things right and part of him worried that it still wasn’t enough. “Very gross.” He couldn’t help agree with Annabeth, he really did agree with her, he wasn’t that whipped yet. “Somewhere between four and five, there are a high number of children of Ares who signed up for the first and second cohort who are attending and they seem to have been very proud to be Greek, so it won’t be long before they’re trying to make balistai out of a chair leg or something stupid like that.” He shrugged. “I’ve got a few buckets of ice behind the bar just in case anything needs to be put out.”
Again, Annabeth only grinned in her response to his agreeing with her. “Everyone knows that Poseidon kids have cooties.” She shouted along with the chants that were being led for a moment, letting herself be swept up in the energy of the march for the duration of them. All grouped up like this, chanting for the same thing and pride— she felt as if they were invincible. Truly, there was strength in numbers, as well as strength in having Percy by her side. “Of course there are a high number of Ares attending,” she mumbled under her breath, thinking of Clarisse and how much she would overreact to their current situation. Though she chuckled at Percy’s comment she also went on to say, “I just hope they aren’t successful. The last thing we need is a fight breaking out. It’s not as if the Romans don’t think we’re barbarians already. We hardly need to give them any excuse to think it more. But look at you coming all prepared for anything. I’m starting to wonder if you even need Riptide to automatically return to your pocket with how responsible you’ve become.” Of course, if he lost the sword in battle via disarming it was still incredibly useful, but she couldn’t resist teasing him.
“Ah, I think you’ll find that it is Athenians who have cooties, Poseidon kids have crabs. Don’t worry though, it is an easy mistake to make.” Percy smirked broadly before shrugging and chanting along with everyone else. It was a shame he’d never been able to engage in activism outside of New Rome, he was starting to think that he would’ve really loved it. He couldn’t help but smirk further at her jabs at the children of Ares. “Well, at least they’re willing to stand up and fight for what they believe in, although I’m not sure they wanted to when they found out that a daughter of the goddess of Peace had organised it…” he trailed off and smirked gently, the idea of the children of war and peace getting along was something that he wished Chiron could see. He hoped that their mentor would’ve been proud of them. “Ah, well, I’ve been trying extra hard to grow up actually,” he pointed out with a smirk, “this morning I had diet coke in my lucky charms! Diet.” He was of course joking. Diet coke was gross. It was all about coke zero.
Annabeth couldn’t help the hearty laugh that came from her at Percy’s joke, and she was only reminded once more of how much she loved him as her eyes crinkled in joy. “Thank the gods we use protection. The last thing I want is crabs. I’m perfectly happy with my cooties. At least they’re smart.” She could see the Open Hearth coming in to view, the front of the march already filing into the establishment. It marked the end of the progression, and a part of Annabeth was sad it was over— though she was excited for the celebrations that were sure to come inside the restaurant. “Definitely. That’s one thing Ares kids are useful for. And as if you’d go near anything but Coke Zero. We maybe be getting old Percy...but not that old. Soon enough we might even progress to cereals without marshmallows in them.”
As they reached the Open Hearth and the swarm of Greeks and the occassional Roman began to fan out around the building, everyone looking for drinks and refreshments, Percy couldn’t help himself and quickly found that he was pulling Annabeth into a lopsided hug and press a firm kiss to her cheek. “We made it, and of course we use protection, who doesn’t take a celestial bronze dagger to bed with them? Monsters under the bed is a very real thing….” he laughed after a second of silence and smirked gently. “Ah, you know me too well Annabeth,” he confessed with a bright grin, “I doubt I’d go near anything like that, we can’t all be boring and enjoy cardboard -- I mean cornflakes…”

Taako and Angus go component shopping in Angus’ favorite apothecary. Vanishing for months does have consequences, kid.
@fireflymoonfox - you were warned...
---------
Neverwinter was a decently large city. By the standards of Faerun, it was the city; big and bustling and full of places that a small boy could expect to find reasonable amounts of trouble.
Angus McDonald loved Neverwinter.
To be more precise, Angus McDonald loved the city of Neverwinter. The people, on the other hand, he could have happily lived without. It wasn't that they were terrible people or anything, but apparently it was impossible for an adult to see a child competently handling the investigation of a series of grisly murders without thinking that the child was somehow damaged. Or something.
Angus didn't really understand the problem, but going to work for the Bureau of Balance had shown him a completely different world of social interactions.
Not one of his co-workers treated him as anything less than a capable person in his own right. No one tried to keep him away from the realities of what they were dealing with, or tried to stop him from reading the material that was necessary for his research, or kept things from him 'for his own good'. It was so refreshing that Angus had spent the first two weeks of his employment drifting around in a cloud of happiness.
When he was assigned as the Seeker Liaison to the THB, he'd been sworn to do the best job of any Seeker in the history of the Bureau. Taako, Magnus, and Merle had all been really mean to him on the train, but they'd also been really cool. Angus was determined to make himself indispensable to the three.
Unfortunately, they didn't actually seem to need him around. Even flying by the seat of their pants they managed to scrape through any situation they came up against. The one time they actually called on him for help, Angus got them in trouble for cheating and the Stones of Farspeech promptly stopped working.
Angus had been terrified that they'd died, and some small part of his mind had been positive that the Bureau was going to throw him out on his ear. He'd just lost them their only Reclaimers, after all.
But then they'd come back, bickering and biting commentary and just as wonderfully awful as they'd ever been.
Angus had silently resolved to never put them in that position ever again.
He had to be better.
He'd meant it, after all, when he'd said that he loved them. It was a strange, twisty love that he wasn't sure how to handle, but he did love them.
Asking Taako to teach him magic had been a weird, wild impulse, but it had paid off almost instantly. Learning from such an accomplished wizard had driven his studies further, faster than he could have dreamed. Sure, he had to do a lot of the theory work on his own, since Taako tended to gloss over theory with overly complicated explanations that didn't actually make sense, or with airy handwaves and "don't worry about it"s, but that was fine. Angus was used to doing bookwork on his own time.
Besides, all of that led him to where he was now, leading Taako through the streets of Neverwinter towards the Merchant's Quarter.
"So what you gotta know about components," Taako was saying, swinging his umbrella idly, "Is that there's the standard components, and then there's the ones that work for you, you dig?" Taako didn't wait for a response, instead continuing the absent minded lecture. "Take Grease. Some books say to use pork rind, some say to use butter. I use butter 'cause I can just transmute that shit out of whatever and it works fine. Also, pork rinds are fucking disgusting. But Sleep is different! Sleep," he said, gesturing grandly and nearly hitting another passerby in the face with his umbrella, "is commonly accepted to have three different possible components. Those are...?"
"Fine sand, rose petals, or a cricket." Angus replied promptly, glancing up just in time to catch the brief flash of pride across his teacher's face.
"Right," Taako agreed, pausing with his hand on Angus' shoulder as a riderless horse bolted down the street. Several shouting men chased after it, and after the entire procession was past he gently shoved Angus forwards again. "But I don't use any of those."
Angus frowned. "You don't? But Sir, I've seen you cast Sleep, what component do you use?"
"Technically it's two components," Taako said smugly, "But the combination makes my sleep spells stronger, so they last longer."
"What are they?" Angus asked again, and Taako grinned at him, then caught sight of a sign half a block away from them and lengthened his stride.
Angus tried to lengthen his stride as well, but ended up having to trot after Taako, dodging around other pedestrians as best he could while trying to keep up.
Ducking into the small, odd smelling storefront was something of a relief, and Angus took a deep breath of the familiar scent, then let it out with a small, happy hum.
"This is the Apothecary you said was the best in Neverwinter?" Taako asked looking around at the barrels and jars and piles of herbs and potions and components that filled the plain wooden room.
"Oh yes, Sir. Teakin always had what I was looking for when I needed something of an experiment, or to help solve a case! If you need to restock your component supply, this is definitely the best place!" Angus hesitated for a moment, torn between wanting to tug Taako further into the store so he could show him the tiny flasks of liquid gold that were cool to the touch, and not wanting to invade Taako's swath of personal space.
"Hmm..." Taako's eyes half shut, and he took a deep, testing breath in through his nose, then let it out slowly through his mouth. When his eyes opened fully again, the expression on his face was oddly considering.
"All right Ango," he said, "Since you know the place so well, then I gue-"
"Angus?"
The voice was just as Angus remembered it. Deep, gravely, and somehow as inviting as a warm fire after a long day out in the rain. Angus didn't even bother to conceal his glee as he turned to greet the speaker.
"Mr. Teakin! Hi! How are you?"
Teakin, huge and grizzled and still wearing the stained leather apron that Angus had never seen him without scowled thunderously at him. "How am I?" he demanded, and leveled one thick finger at him. "How about this, boyo, how about this? How about you tell me why you vanish off the face of Faerun with no word to the wise about any trip or nothing, and then pop up all 'Hi Mr. Teakin, how are you?' ? How about that, huh? Where the hell have you been, boyo?"
Angus flushed and carefully avoided looking up at Taako.
"I, ah... I got a job?" he tried, and Teakin's eyes narrowed, shifting from Angus to Taako.
"Really."
Angus tried to ignore the flatness in Teakin's voice, "Oh yes, it's great! I get to learn all sorts of fascinating things, and meet so many amazing people, I love it a lot!"
"You do, do you?"
Teakin's face had started to turn red, and Angus looked up at Taako. Maybe Mr. Taaco was doing something to antagonize Teakin? It was sort of a thing he did to most people, so-
But no. Taako's face was hard and cold. His arms were crossed, and his fingers were caressing the handle of his umbrella where it hung from his arm with an absently dangerous air.
"Um."
Now Angus was close to panicking. "Um... Oh! This is my teacher, Mr. Taaco! He's teaching me magic!"
Narrowed eyes moved back from Taako back to him, studying his face.
"Magic?"
Angus nodded earnestly, "Oh yes, Mr. Taaco is very good at magic, and at teaching. I can already do two whole first level spells!"
"Barely." Taako said automatically, "Ya still need some work on Sleep, boychik."
But now the two adults were relaxing; Teakin plopping heavily onto the stool behind him and leaning forward to prop his elbows on the counter in front of him and Taako uncrossing his arms and going back to using his umbrella as a cane replacement.
"Magic huh," Teakin said thoughtfully, then, "You'll be wanting components then?"
"That was the idea." Taako agreed lightly, "Ango-Jango said that this place was the best in Neverwinter."
Teakin snorted, "Try the best on the Sword Coast. Me 'n the family grow 'n harvest most of our stock ourselves. Whatever we don't have, we can get."
One of Taako's eyebrows arched skeptically, but he pulled a slip of parchment out of his sleeve and stalked off down one of the aisles of shelves.
"Sorry for forgetting to tell you," Angus offered sheepishly, and Teakin waved him off.
"Don't worry about it, but next time make sure you drop us a line, okay?"
"Yessir!" Angus chirped, then jumped when Taako stomped back out of the shelves and caught him by the collar before dragging him back the way he'd come.
In the split second Angus had before his view was obscured by shelving, he could have sworn that Teakin was trying to smother an amused smile behind his hand.
Angus watched as Taako picked and pulled things out of crates and bins, tested the consistency of salves and oils between his fingers, and sniffed everything as critically as any schoolmarm looking for flaws she might be able to criticize. In the end, however, one thing after the next passed inspection and was thrust unceremoniously into Angus' arms. When they finally made it back up to the front of the store, Angus could barely see over the pile and Taako had to put everything on the counter because if Angus' grip had shifted even minutely it all would have ended up on the ground.
And then.
Then came the haggling.
And Angus was stuck watching in half horrified awe as Taako turned into a monster.
Everything was in question. The spices weren't at peak freshness. The oil was slightly off. The scent in the candles was more rose than magnolia, and did Teakin really expect to be able to get four silvers for an ounce of gryphon blood?
In the end, neither men looked satisfied. But Taako still forked over the amount they'd agreed on, and Teakin still wrapped everything up in thick brown paper and even tossed in a bag for Angus to carry everything in, and somehow, as soon as it was all over, they were smiling at each other.
"Ya got good shit here." Taako said waving airily at the shop, "Nice doin' business with ya."
"You're one hell of a hard ass," Teakin said, shaking his head and trying to hide his grin, "feel free to come back any time, as long as you bring Angus along. I gotta make sure you're taking care of the kid."
"Yeah sure." Taako agreed breezily, and swept out of the store, hooking the curve of his umbrella around Angus's upper arm in passing and pulling him along.
Angus barely managed to get out his farewell before the door slammed shut behind him and Taako's umbrella unhooked from his arm.
Angus managed to hold it back for half a block before he broke.
"Sir, with all due respect what the hell was that!?"
"Hmm?" Taako glanced down at him, eyebrows raised questioningly, "What was what?"
"That!" Angus waved his free hand back toward Teakin's apothecary.
"Oh that." Taako turned back to watching where he was walking, studiously nonchalant. "Honey, when you're on the road as much as I am you learn a few tricks to getting the best out of skinflint merchants."
"But you never do that to Garfield!" Angus protested, and Taako snorted delicately.
"Garfield never implied that I-" He glanced down at Angus again, and his mouth snapped shut. "I don't really care about dealing with Garfield. The dude creeps me the hell out."
"I see." Angus said, carefully filing away the unfinished sentence in the back of his mind so that he could mull it over later, in private. "Could you teach me?"
Taako startled, actually pausing mid stride so that he could look at Angus head on.
"What?"
"Will you teach me to bargain?" Angus said patiently, "Obviously it's a skill I'm going to need in the future, and if you teach me, then I can go and get whatever components that we both need if you can't for some reason, and-"
"Yeah sure." Taako interrupted, "But later. Not now, yeah? We've already got all the shit we need, so we should head back before the idiots manage to walk off the edge of the goddamn moon or something."
"Yes Sir!" Angus agreed happily, and fell in step with Taako, trying not to grin when he noticed that the elf had shortened his stride so that the two of them could walk side by side.

Can car insurance companies discover speed camera tickets?
Long story short: Do I need to tell the car insurance companies about speed camera tickets I received? I read that lying to car insurance companies is a good way to get your insurance canceled, or claim denied. I know that they check what you say on the application. If these were regular speeding tickets, I would have no question that they need to be reported, because it's on my record. But these are from a speed camera. The citation says it cannot be used to increase my car insurance rates, and that it will not add points to my record. All my friends say they don't report it. Despite that, Travelers said these do count, and denied providing a quote because I have had three speed camera tickets in the past three years. Is this information even present on my driver's record? Is this something they can verify? More importantly, could they deny a claim I make for failing to tell them about these tickets?""

Why do a lot of health insurance plans through your parents employers cut you off at 25 yrs old?
I'm a full time student and turned 25 in September. I guess once September ended I'm no longer covered under my dad's health insurance. I'm still an undergrad, but what about the ones that are going to medical school, dental school, etc, that aren't even done with college until there late 20s if they went right out of high school? 25 is still young, and it's still hard to afford for most people at that age. How much will my insurance payment increase because of my speeding ticket?

Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""
Can't find No fault insurance?
I am looking online and I can't find any site that will give me a quote on no fault auto insurance. Everyone I go to is full coverage and I don't want that. I would say I'm pretty good at finding things online but yahoo or google searches are not giving me the sites I want. Please don't be like this one guy and give me an answer that an computer operator would give me. --- answered by carbuyboy . In order to get no-fault insurance, your state has to be a no-fault state. Only a few are. Since you can't find no-fault, it looks like you don't live in one of the few no-fault states. This does not answer my question at all not even 1% of it.""
Term insurance or whole life insurance?
I want to get life insurance, but I am not sure whhich type of insurance I should get. I have done lots of research and majority of the research tells me to get term life insurance, but I am still confused to why. Here is a little about me: 30 years old, married, and have a baby. Non-smoker, and overall healthy, minus some arthritis. My first thought is to get whole life insurance because it definitely covers my family if I pass away when I am a lot older. However, I then hear that whole life is not a great investment - too expensive and lot of cost/fees involved, you don't really know how much of your premiums are going into your insurance and how much is going into the savings where the company invest the money. After hearing that, I think well term isn't so bad then. I get a lower premium for the same amount of life insurance. But then, I know term insurance only last a limited time. I see 30 years usually being the longest term life insurance. Well 30 years from now (considering nothing happens to me in the next 30 years), I will only be 60. That is still pretty young and then I wil have to renew my term insurance, but at 60, my premium will be a lot more than it would be right now. SO as you can see, I am at a lost and have no clue what to do. I would like some opinions, feedback, suggestions, etc, that would be much appreciated. (side note- when explaining which insurance is better, please explain in simple terms. I posted awhile back and I had some responses with very advanced insurance explanations that confused me! lol). ;) Oh, I do have life insurance with my company, but it's not much and I don't see mysefl staying with this company, so I prefer getting my own private life insurance.""

Total loss and State farm auto insurance?
I had a collision a few weeks before and it is classified as collision damage. I received an estimate at a body shop who initially provided an estimate of $xxxxx/- and said that the insurance company has agreed to pay them and a delivery date was given. Now, things have changed in the middle and the body shop manager tells me a new stories of additional things that went wrong due to collision (all of a sudden) and that the insurance agent after inspection wants to call it a total loss based on this new estimate. My insurance company- State farm wants it to call a total loss which I doubt given the extent of repair it might take for the minor damage in the front fender alone. Now, here are my questions. I now have suspicion on the integrity of the body shop as well the trick palyed in declaring total loss. 1. Can I have a second opinion at a different body shop? Does State farm allow that? 2. If the repair cost is more than the ACV, and if I still wish to keep the car, can I negotiate for the max amount less deductible that State farm is willing to pay the body shop (xx% of the max amount that state farm is willing to pay before declaring total loss) and I take care of the remaining cost? Your input is appreciated. Thanks, NS""
