Watched absolution because I saw a certain spoiler and was intrigued, loooonggg post of spoilers and thoughts under the cut
Are we are really surprised the supercop zealot is bioware's canon divine? lmao.
I generally liked the cast of characters quite a lot, Roland Lacklon and Qwydion most of all, Miriam is cool too, just not top spot for me. she's like. Number 4 on my list. Of surviving characters that is.
Rip Fairbanks. Made the rookie Ser Jory mistake of mentioning his loving wife more than once within the intro of the series. You will be missed.
The writers really said make them think we will finally switch up the Mage Is Always The 'Traitor' reveals (that aren't even true for games 1 and 2 but the joke is marketable so who cares for accuracy right) but then just do the same thing again. I have a feeling they think they are playing 4d chess when really it's just predictable.
The action was well executed and I liked the romance with Roland and Lacklon, it was cute :)
The show handled Tevinter better than I expected but my expectations were subterranean so that doesn't mean much.
Still don't care for the way bioware deals with blood magic. With Dorian we finally had a smart opinion on it [that the writers didn't try to stamp out or treat as stupid, sorry Merrill]- that it's simply a tool as long as there's no victims, but here we backpedal again into the narrative going 'anyone that even THINKS of blood magic is and always will be evil full stop'. Yes we're talking about a Magister here i'm not defending Rezaren in specific I'm just weary of how they'll treat it going forward.
Speaking of the guy, he was fine as a villain. pretty decent portrayal of a guy whose position of power deludes him into thinking his goal is noble and righteous no matter what, even to the detriment of the people he's supposedly trying to help, because well. He never saw them as people in the first place. 'Family' maybe, whatever that's supposed to mean to him, but still property. Things he gets to do whatever he wants to do with.
Miriam using his harrowing as an example of a moment he chose not to defend her or her brother though, is kinda meh. Bc girl, he was actively trying and failing not to get possessed, his mother's the one to blame for that specific instance and you KNOW it, I know we had to see that scene for exposition but i'm peeved jdshfjd I bet there were maaany more backstory examples of him being shit to choose from anyhow.
There was an Attempt at moral grayness at least two times in the show, with Tassia and Hira, and they are both... interesting.
Tassia imo does it better, as as the knight commander she can be safely [and firmly] put in the villain box, but the added levels of grey with her caring for her people's safety, opposing the venatori etc make her interesting to watch in a way where I may not be rooting for her but I don't want her to die either, yanno? She's a bit like if Aveline were an anti-villain, and actually decently well written at that. She gets spot 5 of my list.
Now Hira. Is a prisoner of that good ol Mage Betrayal Russian Roulette. I'd seen a small spoiler about her being up to no good before watching, but even without that, when Fairbanks stabbed her I could just SNIFF that red herring. Again, the writers may think they're playing 4d chess but I know not making a mage (or more) the villain, is to them what apples are to doctors. Then her motivation is just. Not convincing to me. Her family was influential tevinters that wanted to improve conditions for the oppressed, then they were killed and/or ran out the country by the venatori for it. so... she jumps right to ethnic cleansing as the solution?
(And I do mean right to it. She did go to the inquisition first but that's what she wanted to get out of it.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Collateral damage is a funny way of referring to innocent people's lives queen!
Tumblr media
Idk something about that feels familiar. Betrayal, a mage that jumps to genocide, yet said mage is somehow granted more lenience by the narrative than that stance should EVER allow? Because here's the thing. no matter HOW fucked a country is, how terrible the politics and power structures are, 'wiping the country out' IS NEVER A MORALLY GREY THING. IT'S AS BLACK AS IT GETS. it is the power structure itself that must be targeted. (you know, the thing Anders tried to do and gets eternally condemned for?) Wanting to massacre an entire population is not an opinion that's up for discussion, it is not worthy of redemption, and it should not be written as if it is. This pattern of character writing is just. Concerning to me. Some of the characters with the most morally bankrupt stances being passed off as grey. And I could get far deeper into it here, nearly did in fact, but It's a tad too late in the night for a 5 page essay on fantasy and real world politics intersection. I'll just leave it at ''bioware's centrism is doing what centrism does best and blinding them to their world's actual political power dynamics and I think it's going to bite them in the ass sooner or later''
But enough of that, let's try to get back to something funny shall we?
The cheese jokes. Bioware please, the horse, stop, stop it's already dead!
(i dont actually mind but that was my original reaction so here you go sdfhjs)
Dragon cool. Like that it stays alive.
ok, sorry that's all I got. We have to tackle the elephant in the room now folks and i'm afraid I am not optimistic.
So. Meredith motherfucking Stannard is still alive and kicking. And while I can completely understand why people are excited, AN ACTUALLY GOOD VILLAIN IS BACK, WOOHOO! -i just can't help but think. When? When will this plot thread be handled? Because as much as I wish the titular character of dreadwolf would drop dead by act one, I highly, highly doubt it hjsdfjf. And if she can't be the main villain, or at least what Howe was to Loghain, then I don't want her to be in da4. Because that game has SO MUCH SHIT to tackle, with Elven Gods and Titans, the egg and also Antiva and the Qunari now for some fucking reason? Frankly I don't think they can even do THIS sum of things justice in a single game, unless things with the gods take a different turn and they aren't what solas said/villains for us to fight (please I hate the slavery thing so fucking much just for once retcon something to the benefit of religious minorities bioware i'm fucking BEGGING) so adding Meredith to the mix is not something I can picture working out. I don't want to get excited for her to be back (She was the spoiler that got me to watch the series) only to have it be a repeat of the templar/mage war in inq where she's lukewarmly taken out by act 1.
Also before I do an all in all, we all got that Hira is getting Played right. Like I dont like her much(at all), as stated previously, but she's still a mage. working for Meredith motherfucking Stannard. Is it too early to call her eventually dying from that dumbass decision orrr..? Because yes girly, she also wants to genocide your home country, but she has VERY different reasons from you and you're almost guaranteed to be first on the chopping block the moment the red lyrium cracks. (i dont find this bullet point bad writing btw this is just razzing the characters for fun jhsdj)
ok so all in all. the show's alright. I highlighted more of the bad than the good here because anything past da2 has that effect on me sadly, but the characters do Carry as per usual. And i'd say it's worth a watch for the action shots alone. Some of my fears of Bioware's direction were confirmed, and i am still not at all enthused about da4, but if a season two comes out I'll probably watch it. unnecessarily long post over, adiós.

Did you know that there are whipping posts in the Kirkwall Gallows?
They’re rather easy for players to miss. You can see them in the background during The Last Straw (Act 3), and as early as Act 1 (and continuing into Act 2), Circle mages can be heard complaining, “Don’t talk to me. The templars will give me thirty lashes if they see me speaking to a civilian.” During the quest A Noble Agenda (Act 3), a woman reports seeing a mage cousin “whipped, half-starving” while pleading for mercy from a literal “death squad.”
In-universe, however, the whippings in the Gallows appear to be common knowledge. During Repentance (Act 2), we can see a whipping post (the exact same model observed in the Gallows later on) being used for sexual roleplay in the Harimann Estate in Hightown.
Tumblr media
Lord Harimann: Now, you be the naughty apprentice, and I’ll be the Templar torturer.
Tumblr media
It’s Played For Laughs here of course, but it really says something that citizens of Kirkwall know about Templar abuses in the Gallows and just how awful conditions are there — including the use of whipping posts. This isn’t even the only instance in the game of random NPCs referring to the severity of the repression and the rampant cruelty.
For example…
During The Destruction of Lothering (Prologue):
Hawke: I heard someone call this fortress the Gallows. Is it a prison?
Guardsman Wright: Used to be, back in the Imperial days. They kept slaves here until the rebellion. Now the templars run it and use it to lock up their mages. Guess not much has changed.
Outside Lirene’s shop, during Tranquility (Act 1):
Refugee: Hey! We heard you in there. Asking about the healer. We know what happens to mages in this town. And it ain't gonna happen to him.
Speaking to the sister of a Templar during Enemies Among Us (Act 1):
Macha: Keran was always so devout, so idealistic. He was so proud when the templars accepted him. I pleaded with him not to join the Order, but he wouldn't listen. You hear dark rumors about the templars and Knight-Commander Meredith. And now my brother is gone.
Hawke: (“Are templars so bad here?”) In Lothering, some templars died protecting villagers. I never heard any dark rumors.
Macha: And those are the stories my Keran adored. But it is not like that here, serah. There is a growing darkness in the order. They prowl the streets in packs. Hunting. And now, they say their duties put them above us, that they have the right to... take people from their homes. It is frightening.
Hawke: (“Tell me about Meredith”) What do people say about Knight-Commander Meredith?
Macha: Oh, she has many admirers. They laud the service she does in keeping the mages in check. But others say she is terribly fierce and utterly without pity. That she sees demons everywhere. It is dangerous even to whisper such things.
During Wayward Son (Act 1):
Feynriel: Look, I know it's different in other kingdoms, but here... no one helps Circle mages. Anything the templars don't like, you get the brand.
During Underground Railroad (Act 2):
Hawke: Helping apostates is dangerous. If the templars caught you...
Mistress Selby: One of my sisters is a mage. A gentle child, so generous. She was made Tranquil last year. Templars claimed she was a danger. Now... it's like she's not there. That shouldn't be forced on anyone.
In Sundermount (Act 3), if Feynriel escapes to Tevinter:
Arianni: I hear the templars have grown more abusive of the mages in Kirkwall. I'm glad Feynriel is no longer subject to their whims.
By the Docks, any Act:
Unnamed Woman: I feel sorry for the mages sometimes, you know? What a terrible thing, to be used by everyone.
Knight-Captain Cullen even admits that the common folk suspect them and have become hostile towards the Templars. There’s this exchange in Act 1:
Hawke: The templars defend us all.
Cullen: That's a surprisingly unpopular viewpoint. It used to be that templars were welcomed wherever they went—for defending people from dark magics. Now the townsfolk are as likely to slam their doors as offer us a bed. The image of the poor, chained apprentice is a powerful one. And one the mages are more than willing to exploit.
Then there’s the codex for the Mage Underground (available in Dissent, Act 2), written by Cullen:
Every Circle in Thedas suffers from individual mages who rebel and attempt to flee… Until now, I have never served anywhere that the populace does not fully cooperate in hunting these rebels. Here in Kirkwall, citizens actually help rebel mages escape.
In World of Thedas vol. 2 (p. 173), from a note dated 9:25 (set between Acts 2-3) from a mage of the Hossberg Circle in the far away Anderfels:
I have heard that in the Kirkwall Gallows, mages are locked in their cells with barely room to stretch, let alone exercise.  I can promise you that any mage of the Anderfels would be stark raving mad after a week of such treatment... No wonder Kirkwall has such trouble with blood mages.
Even relative newcomers recognize the situation right away. For example, when speaking to Grand Cleric Elthina in the Chantry (Act 1):
Hawke: Why are Circle mages here kept in a Tevinter prison?
Elthina: Ah. So soon you take an interest in our problems. The short answer is, it was a building. A large one. Should it have sat empty? The Chantry found a use for what was once a horror. It is the nature of men to move on and forget the past. Even your Blight will be a distant memory in our lifetimes.
Isabela: “Once a horror?” Yes, I'm sure it's filled with flowers and sunshine and happiness now.
Even Fenris, who supports Meredith’s policies, immediately notices (first entry into the Gallows, Act 1 or 2):
Fenris: I've... heard about the Circle of Magi outside of the Imperium, but I've never been in one. This seems more like a prison. I wonder if it's more effective than the Circle I know.
Given all this, it’s hard to believe that the people in power in Kirkwall don’t know (or at the very least suspect) what’s going on — more likely, they simply just don’t care.
Or perhaps they think it’s acceptable. As Cassandra says of the Seekers of Truth in Inquisition, “We knew what was happening at Kirkwall, where the mage rebellion began. We looked into reports of Knight-Commander Meredith’s harsh treatment of her charges years earlier. But we found so many shocking cases of magical corruption, it was decided her actions were justified.”

Something I noticed when discussing the Divine election; certain people get really pissy if you pick hardened Leliana and not softened. And while she's not a perfect choice I think she does enact the most change and both her and Cass seem to care a lot more about helping the downtrodden and opressed so they're both better choices than Vivienne at least. Its funny how recruiting her turns out to be a grave mistake, but I wanted to at least give her a chance at first but oh boy..
A lot of people want to jump others' shit for choices made, whether they were made knowingly or not. Even though it's a game.
My brother and I actually agreed on something for once, and it was that we preferred a softened Leliana. My brother was upset because he'd failed to soften her (since we played the game as soon as it came out and we didn't know how our dialogue choices might affect people at the time). Then again, he and I likely prefer a softened Leliana because of our wariness of religious extremism and history of genocide.
That said, just as I stand with Anders' decision as a necessity, I stand with Leliana's, as well.
If kindness doesn't work, cruelty will.
And considering the number of minorities killed by the Chantry, a little of their own blood lost has already proved to be necessary for change, and we shouldn't complain about the moral purity of our response to their prejudice when there's blood painted on the Chantry's walls. I dislike it, but if the laws won't change, revolution will make them.
The way Cassandra speaks of her goals sounds nice, but she still wants to return to the status quo of Circles remaining, templars remaining, and nothing of worth changing (except perhaps people no longer being made Tranquil, eventually). I respect Cassandra a lot, but I don't agree with much of what she believes.
Vivienne literally only cares about gathering more power for herself, and is even willing to use the Chantry and her position to set herself up as leader of a new sort of Tevinter. Let me make it clear: I hate the Chantry, but I hate the magisterium, too. No, it is not a step up to have the mages stepping on the non-mages simply because they'd been stepped on for too long. It's not equality. It's merely a new form of despotism.
Now, since it's a game, I'm not going to judge you fully on your in-game choices; maybe you just want to live a revenge fantasy through the DA games, and that's perfectly fine and valid. And of course there are people who choose to try every ending just to see what it's like. And maybe you and I agree on 99% of real-world issues, but you back Cassandra when I don't. It's all valid! It's a game!!!
But maybe you choose Cassandra or Vivienne because of real-world issues I can't agree with. Maybe that's a common theme to those who choose their Divines. Hence why I might say things like 'if you like Vivienne, you and I will never be friends.' Which is also fine! No one gets along with everyone else; that's not a sign of moral degeneracy. Though it may mean you have political opinions that make me disturbed that you might be able to vote. Hence why I'll block you on social media and pretend you don't exist.
And yeah... while I won't judge anyone for having a hardened Leliana, I will definitely block you if you think Vivienne as Divine is anything other than a catastrophe.
(And I actually recruited Vivienne four times before I lost patience with her. I really really wish I could have publicly kicked her out. That would have been golden.)

Roleplay Opportunity: Leliana The Gist: Human. Rogue. Bard. Left Hand of the Divine. Spymaster. Involvement:  Present in all timelines; plays a critical role in DA:O and DA:I. The Want Ad: As a new roleplay forum, we’d love to have Leliana with us from the beginning as that would be ideal for the progression of her character development overall. We’re looking for a writer who will develop her canonically in addition to writing outside the confines of what we see first-hand in the video games. Perks Of The Role: Opportunity to flesh out her backstory in-between DA:O and DA:I, especially in her role as "Left Hand" of the Divine working alongside the Divine's "Right Hand", Cassandra Pentaghast. Pre-canon adventures and intrigue pertaining to Orlais, as we have a handful of players interested in exploring The Game in general. We haven’t pre-decided who will ultimately be the next Divine. We’re going to vote on that (via community poll) closer to that event, so Leliana has as fair a shot as anyone for the Sunburst Throne (and can also opt-out if her roleplayer prefers - it’s kind of exciting not knowing who it will be). Possible OC Affiliation: There are lots of former associates, friends, and rivals that could pop up including those she knew during her time in the Chantry and those she rubbed shoulders with in Orlais during her stint as "Nightingale of the Imperial Court". During the later DA:I timeline, she had a number of Inquisition secret agents and spies reporting into her as well. Where: Chronicles (18+ Jcink Forum)

Dragon Age: Chronicles of Thedas is looking to fill some key canon roles:
Anders Mage. Plays a critical role in DA:2 timeline, opportunity to get involved during DA:O (pre-Awakening) if interested in exploring his backstory at Ferelden’s Circle Tower. Varric Tethras Rogue. Plays a critical role in both DA:2 and DA:I timelines. Our Hawke would really like to have her best friend at her side. It would be great to see Varric also expand on his political sway and savvy in Kirkwall. Cullen Rutherford Templar. Present in all timelines. He's more than just his glow up in DA:I. We'd love to see a player start from the beginning of his story and really flesh him out, perhaps even including his time in Greenfell prior to his transfer to Kirkwall and later perhaps his actual recruitment into the Inquisition? Leliana Rogue. Present in all timelines. We'd love to have her from the beginning as well, and it would be interesting to also see her time in-between DA:O and DA:I fleshed out more; especially her role as "Left Hand" of the Divine working alongside the Divine's "Right Hand", Cassandra Pentaghast. With Cassandra the fact that she's Butch and a fangirl so lot of people like her and her personality but don't really look at her actions because her actions aren't really criticized in the game. It's just you realize it if you look at what she says vs. her position of power. You see the fact she grossly negligent at best-malicious at worst. Like in comparison to like Cullen or Aveline her actions are seen as less blatant and the conquences arent shown like with them(Qun attack,The Circle)
Yeah, you’re completely right on that front. And I don’t think we question it as much either because she’s really painted as idealistic and good-intentioned when that’s not really the point. She can have good intentions and wax on about how she envisions the Chantry as this great romantic thing that helps and serves but she never really worked to build that. The closest she came was breaking away from the Seekers whereas - like Cullen - she should have made that break AGES ago.

CONFESSION:
You know that bit in DA2 where you can give Fenris back to his "master"?
If you pick yes, the game should end. The second Cassandra hears Varric say "and then Hawke made Fenris go back to being a slave" she should just walk out the door. I refuse to believe that she could still see Hawke as a potential leader of the Inquisition after that.

I understand that vivienne get a lot of backlash maybe in the past??? (I haven't seen much of it in recent days) and the hate she gets for her skin color or gender is disgusting but here me out... If people can criticizing Cullen, Sebastian, Wynne and Cassandra for their conservative stance (or centrist at best)
Surely you can do the same to her?? Right??
I feel like at least in Tumblr, each time someone bring up critical post or about her they'll be like:
"look i like her buuutt"
Sure some of them likes her or likes certain things about her. But i think others are a bit afraid to say anything that's just, plain and bold
'"yeah don't like her"
I'm a very blunt person, i cannot agree on her conservative stance and I don't like her. But once again, as along you support mage rights, elven rights and equality in general, i couldn't care less if you likes her or not. (Or anyone in inquisition really...)
Let's not turn this into unfollow/blocking spree or shading each other please
I'm calling it the Tumblr staff effect:
1.let's say staff made a mistake or created another stupid monetization system then the Tumblr users hates it and the staff got a lot of backlash
2.Then there's a new movement where the opinion shifted and any legitimate criticism over Tumblr staff and higher-up decision are lumped with the hate, and then comes the 'uwu y'all should not be mean to staff, y'all should be embarrassed ' posts
3.And then come the time when people realize you can objectively criticizing staff decision without have to be toxic and all criticism to Tumblr decisions should not be seen as mere hate
I feel like with vivienne it's still on stage 2 moving to stage 3
Also before you say anything, no this is not a personal attack TO YOU I'm talking about vivienne (I'm saying this because some people in DA fandom tend to take any post about DA as if it's a personal attack to them *sigh*)
