Flying Snakes
Concept art by Akiyuki Suzuki of an unused enemy in MOTHER 3 called the Flutter/Flap Snake. The Pigmasks made this chimera so there could be a snake that could bite above the ankles. The body of the snake are actually the left over cow tails from making the Cattlesnakes.

Have you guys cooked any of the monsters you've fought? The ramblin' evil mushrooms? The Cattlesnakes? The Rock Lobsters? The Barrier Trio???
Kumatora: We tried the mushrooms once, weren't that bad. We did NOT want to risk another hallucination trip so we didn't do that with anything on Tanetane island.
Paula: N-no...? (What is wrong with you?!)
Ana: We just straight up couldn't. (Would've been cool though...)

source on Flint?
The dirt.
Tumblr media
Okay, joke answer aside, I'll put the source under the cut...
I'm going to assume that you're likely referring to the fun fact tidbit that I posted yesterday about Flint originally intended to be involved in the Jealous Bass boss fight.
The Cutting Room Floor has an archive of stuff that was cut from Mother 3 but still exists as data within the game. If you scroll down to Flint, you'll see that he has unused sprites for dodging the train, which is an event that happens in chapter 4.
Tumblr media
And if you put Flint into your party as the second party member in debug mode then go to the train, he will dodge the train with that sprite animation. Compare that to Claus, who when programmed to be the second party member, does dodge the train like intended (and Boney, as the third party member, does not) but does not display the proper animation for this motion, we can see that while the behavior of jumping out of the way is programmed into the second party member, they only have the proper sprite for the scene if they're supposed to be there. This tells us that Flint was supposed to be involved in Chapter 4, at least up until the train, but was cut late into development. The only thing that stops Flint from jumping out of the way is the fact that he isn't there.
We also have a cut animation of what appears to be Flint clinging onto the airship, which is what Lucas and the rest of his party does at the end of chapter 5. Now, can I say with absolute certainty that this is what this animation is intended for? No, because I wasn't on the development team. But considering how closely that sprite of Flint resembles the rest of the party in that scene:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And how close Chapters 4 and 5 are to each other, as well as how the Spaceworld (1999) Earthbound 64 trailer* (apologies for the blurriness, but TCRF does have a clearer image of this scene on their website) does show Flint, along with Lucas, Claus, Duster, and Boney clinging to an airship, it's easy to deduce that's it's highly likely that Flint was intended to be in the party at least up until the party separation at the end of Chapter 5.
Also, so no one could say that that animation of Flint was actually supposed to be for Chapter 7 when Lucas and company were clinging onto the bird cage, here's a screenshot of that. You can see that if Flint was involved here, his animation would've had him hanging on from the wrong direction (apologies for the Lucas mooning).
Tumblr media
[Also as a small aside: while not exactly evidence on its own but something worth pointing out, there is a notable difficulty spike in Chapter 4 when there's only Lucas and Boney in the party. The enemies at this point in the game the can wipe your party quite easily if you're not careful, and I always struggled against them even in the standard mode and I'm sure I'm not the only person who experienced this (while the game tells you not to mess with the Cattlesnakes, there's nothing to stop the Horsantulas and Ostrelephants from running right at you and initiating a battle). Having a heavy hitter in your party like Flint would've made the chimeras outside of Club Titiboo as well as the Jealous Bass easier. Again though, I'm not going to use my experiences as evidence because it could just be that I'm not good at the game.]
So, we have a timeframe that says that Flint was supposed to be in the party from around the beginning of Chapter 4 to at least the end of Chapter 5, which is well within the timeframe that the Jealous Bass boss fight occurs. Now, of course, just because there's evidence that Flint was supposed to be in the party for Chapters 4 and 5 doesn't mean that he would've been involved in the Jealous Bass boss fight with a 100% certainty. Flint could've been rendered incapable of participating in the attic dungeon (and, subsequently, that fight) for one reason or another. Maybe he gets locked in the bathroom while showering? Who knows? While it would've been an odd story direction, I wasn't the one making those sorts of decisions, so I can't say with absolute unshakable faith that he was going to be there. And for that, I apologize. I have changed the wording of that post a bit so it's a bit more ambiguous. There's nothing I can do for versions that have been reblogged unfortunately, but at least the base post reflects that. But there's at least enough evidence to prove that this is likely what was intended to happen.
* While I do not consider Earthbound 64 and Mother 3 the same games, it's undeniable that Earthbound 64 did lay the grounds for the direction that Mother 3 went in. If the only piece of evidence I had for Flint clinging to the airship was from that trailer alone, I would not have used it.

Does Gary ever have to battle the train system?
Only time I ever did was when I moved here from Thunder Tower, and oh boy was that great. For context, my barracks were close to the highway nearest Thunder Tower, so I had never had to learn how to drive a Pork Bean to get there; however I did have to learn how to drive the garbage truck since I found I was the only one who cared about, y‘know, not living in filth.
Anyways, moving to the Chimera Lab was probably one of the most annoying and inefficient things I‘d ever been sat through. Like, not only was the train ten minutes late arriving, but we had to stop on the way to Murasaki because there was a Cattlesnake on the tracks that wouldn’t move no matter how loudly the horn screamed at it(wonder whose fault that was, hm). When we were finally moving again, we were about 25 minutes off-schedule, and once we actually got to Murasaki, of course disembarking took way too long. It was a total shitshow, no one cared that I was just promoted to be one of their superiors, it was excruciating.
Then, of course, I still had to walk the entire way from the station to the Chimera Lab, and, well… the rest is history. And, yes, fishing a drowning child from a pond made me another ten-ish minutes late to my orientation, so by the time I was actually at the front door, I was, like, 40 minutes off. Yeesh.

Robin's reaction to a cattlesnake? (Or any chimera on the Nowhere Island.)
Tumblr media
Robin watches the cattlesnake curiously, transfixed by how it lazily slithers its head down to munch on grass while its long, green tail sways.
She has little to no reference for how either of the creatures composing it should be, so she isn't aware of its unnatural origins (though she does find it strange that it only has scales on its neck and tail.) The creature fascinates her, still. Part of her wants to pet it, but the aggressive fauna found on her home planet have taught her that approaching wild animals is never a good idea no matter how calm they may look.
Robin keeps her distance, but she's not leaving anytime soon.

The trunksnakes are a diverse group of herbivorous Arboriformes spanning a wide number of species throughout the globe. Close relatives of the gliding windribbons and the brachiating twintrunks, the trunksnakes are distinguished by their long, dexterous nasal appendages, which serves them well in plucking vegetation and reaching it into their mouths.
Most species of trunksnakes around the world are arboreal, filling the niches of browsers as they feed on leaves, branches and fruit high up in the treetops, while the ophiotauri graze on lower vegetation such as grasses and shrubs. Their flexible bodies and prehensile tails allow them to grip onto branches and access food sources out of the reach of other herbivores.
In the continent of Australia however, the ophiotauri are completely absent, and thus the trunksnakes are free to fill ground dwelling niches in this isolated ecosystem. Here, many trunksnakes grow to truly surprising proportions, filling their niches as grazers and low-level browsers. Their metabolism, while not fully warm-blooded, is more active than that of the cold-blooded ophiotauri, allowing them to be far more active in a wider range of temperatures.
Unlike the ophiotauri, the trunksnakes practice parental care, watching over their eggs and defending their young until they are big enough to fend for themselves. Many species raise their young communally, with multiple females nesting close together and cooperating to protect their offspring.
Notable species include:
▪The striped nightslinker is a fairly typical trunksnake species, measuring up to 12-15 feet in length and living in the forests of South America. It sports the typical adaptations of the rest of its kin, such as a prehensile tail and a grasping trunk that it uses to pull tender young shoots in the treetops into reach of its mouth. However, unsusually for its kin, the nightslinker, as its name implies, is a nocturnal species, hiding within holes in trees and dense vegetation during the day. This is due to South America being home to diurnal theriodontophidian predators, such as pantervipers and tatzelworms, and by emerging at the cover of darkness the nightslinker minimizes its chances of running into the typically daytime predators.
▪ The mottled scusk is another arboreal trunksnake, but unlike its smaller relative is active in daytime. The scusk can afford to feed during daylight hours as it is better adapted for defense: its large size at up to 25 feet long is itself already a deterrent to most predators, while the sharp tusks on its lower jaw can inflict painful wounds onto an attacker. These tusks also serve a more mundane purpose as well: the scusk uses them as scythes to slice branches off trees, gripping the branch with its trunk and using side-to-side motions of its lower jaw to cut the branch at its base.
▪The berry-red snoodsnoot is a resident of temperate forests in the Asian continent, and measuring only 3-4 feet long is a far more agile and active creature than its other cousins. Feeding mostly on fruits, flowers, nuts and seeds, the snoodsnoot has surprisingly sensitive color vision due to its diet, and with this comes colorful displays in the form of bright red facial markings, including a crest on its head and inflatable pouches in its trunk and throat. Social animals, they gather in family groups of up to a dozen individuals, where they often try to fend off intruders to their territory with a loud racket of honking and throat-puffing.
▪The knobbled pinoch is a 15-18 foot-long species native to the conifer forests of North America, where it feeds on branches and tough vegetation, as well as nuts and pine cones in large quantities. Its incredibly long trunk, nearly a third as long as the rest of its body, allow it to reach out for food even on thin branches too fragile to support its weight, while its powerful jaw muscles and broad teeth enable the pinoch to grind up tough woody branches and cones. The bony knobs adorning its head are typically used for display, but can also be used to headbutt an attacker and shove them out of the tree.
▪The duckbill cattlesnake is a ground-dwelling grazing herbivore of Australia, where the lack of ophiotaurus competitors has allowed the trunksnakes to dominate the ground herbivore grazer niches. Reaching lengths of up to 35 feet, the cattlesnake uses its broat flattened snout and wide lower teeth as scoops, shoveling up grasses and other ground vegetation, roots and all. Its upper jaw also sports a pair of small upper teeth that can be used in self-defense, and they typically gather in large herds to discourage raptoads and other Australian predators from attacking them.
▪The heraldic shieldspear, another Australian grazer, is a highly sexually-dimorphic species, with males averaging about 30 feet in length, while females are smaller at about 18-20 feet. While males possess large knobbly horns and an armor-plated head, forming a battering ram ideal for clashing heads with rival males, the females instead possess long, slender and sharp horns more suited for fending off small predators seeking to prey on their young. Females nest in large groups, cooperating to care for their offspring, while males are solitary and wide-roaming, only interacting with their harems to mate and providing little care for the young.
▪The mossback wiglodocus, at lengths of over 60 feet is the largest herbivore of the Australian continent--and indeed one of the biggest living pseudosnakes save for the aquatic cetitans. Its bulky body, supported by sturdy ribs and fused sternum-analogues, has developed rippling muscular pads on its underbelly similar to those of the ophiotauri, while its slender, flexible neck and prehensile trunk allows its head to reach vegetation independently of its slow-moving body. These adaptations also give it the unique ability to browse on higher vegetation, unlike other, more typical trunksnakes that needed to become arboreal to access this food source. While young individuals are vulnerable to predators, particularly raptoads, adults are far too big to tackle and thus have no natural predators.
▪The lochlake messie is a relative of the wiglodocus, but one that has become fully aquatic, spending its entire life in water and evolving ovoviviparity independently of the bahamuts. Freed from the need to ever come onto land again, the various species of messie spread throughout the world's oceans, frequenting shallow seas to graze upon forests of kelp and algae as well as feeding on the large mats of floating seaweed that grow in the open seas. While most species live in saltwater, thriving in the oceans, the lochlake messie is notable for its tendency to frequent freshwater streams and lakes, and is ocassionally observed reaching out of the water to feed on land plants that grow close to shore.
▪The imperial spadesnout is a highly unusual species thriving underneath Australia's grasslands, and is markedly aberrant for many reasons: for one, it is very small, measuring only 4-5 inches in the females and up to 7 inches in the males, and unlike its arboreal cousins the spadesnout lives underground (on rare occasions surfacing in the cover of night to forage above ground), using a claw-like keratinized appendage on its trunk and its paddle-like tail to excavate complex interconnected burrows that can span almost a square kilometer in some of the larger nests. Most surprisingly, however, is their colonial social structure, unique among pseudosnakes, with a single large breeding queen who can grow up to almost 10 inches, and several hundred up to a thousand other individuals comprised of female workers and male soldiers, which are typically all the queen's children and almost never breed. Spadesnout workers tunnel great distances in search for food, typically roots and tubers but also insect larvae and worms, while the queen and up to half a dozen breeding males regularly add to the population, laying a clutch of 3-6 eggs every twelve to fifteen days, which are tended to by the workers. Special hormones excreted by the queen in her droppings help stunt the reproductive maturity of the other colony members, but as colonies get too large, this substance becomes withrawn from the fringes of the colony, allowing new queens to mature and break off to form new colonies of their own.

word count: 1799 characters: Pork Trooper / Eoforwine extra notes: n/a. no sadness. just kibby
He’s heard scratching around his house for a few days now.  His first assumption was mice and rats, which he had plenty of trouble with to the point that he’s starting to give up on continuing the war against them getting into his home.  Isn’t like he has much to offer them aside from dry shelter-- or not even that when the roof leaks if it rains especially hard.  But hey, it’s better than not having shelter at all.  For how shoddily built Eoforwine’s home is, it’s still home, at least.
After a while, For was confident that a particularly large rat was now trying to make home here in his shack based on the sound.  He’s only caught the vague, dark shape of it out of the corner of his eye a couple times.  He doesn’t stay inside most of the day; nothing to do inside, and he can’t possibly make it out in the dark with the dark fur it has and no lights.  It didn’t even seem to be there all the time.  Some days, he didn’t hear from the rat at all.
For isn’t wigged out by the thought of rats so long as they stay the hell away from him and stay out of his food-- which they had, for now.  However, even he has to admit to feeling unsettled when he wakes up one morning and feels something furry shoot off the bed at the first sign of his own stirring.  After checking over his body and finding no bites, he finally clambers off of his bed.  He didn’t see where it ran off to after that, not that it has many places to hide.
But his first instinct is to leave his front door open in case it wants to get the hell out, which he, of course, would highly prefer at this point.  The moment he turns his back he hears scuttling behind him and For turns just fast enough to see the back end of not a rat, but a cat flying out the open door and dashing off into the high grasses of the field beyond his small garden and trimmed down yard.  For’s eyes go wide in surprise, but he’s absolutely not fast enough to chase after it.
Maybe he should have realized that it was a stray sooner; this isn’t the first, and likely won’t be the last.  Nowhere seems to have quite the problem with stray dogs in particular.  For’s entertained the thought of trying to take one in.  He could do for some company out here.  While he may be in contact with a few people now at least, he’d still like some more interaction on a day-to-day basis, so a pet would be helpful.  But every attempt to keep a pet has ended in failure.  No matter his patience, they wind up running off and he doesn’t see them again.
For a moment, he considers leaving some food out for the cat in case it returns, but he’s afraid of drawing bugs or, God forbid, cattlesnakes and other chimeras he definitely doesn’t want around, so he simply winds up leaving out a small bowl of water by the door, just in case it gets thirsty.  Then, it winds up vanishing from his mind for most of the day afterwards as he goes about his day as normal.  Only when he returns to his house at dusk and sees the cat trying to squeeze through the cracks in the shutters of his window that he remembers his attempt.
But his heavy steps and feet crushing the crunchy yellow grass beneath him alert it to his presence, but it stays frozen, hung on the window, eyes widened.  For stops where he stands and they stay stuck, standing and staring at each other in silence.  And after that, the little black cat dislodges itself from the window and dashes off again.  For curses under his breath, but continues on.  It’s hard to tell if it took any of the water, but he hopes it did.  He leaves it there in case it returns and, when he goes to sleep later that evening, leaves one of the windows open in case it wants to climb in again.
When he awakes, he sees movement by the window, but as soon as his eyes adjust to the early light, he realizes a cattlesnake has dipped its long neck and head through the window, exploring the area around the window curiously.  For groans and climbs out of bed and, without fear of being bitten, picks the damned thing’s neck up and pushes it outside.  “Get the fuck outta here, would’ja?” he grumbles, then slams the shutters shut.
Turning back towards the bed, he spots movement underneath the bed.  For squats to see the cat backing away, hiding underneath the mattress, yellow eyes wide as saucers, just like yesterday.  He returns to standing height and sighs, wandering over to the kitchen.  There’s no way it can get out as far as he knows, so... maybe he can try and get it to trust him now.  He should feed it.  It’s probably hungry.  Too bad he has no fish... he’ll have to catch some later for it-- assuming it sticks around, of course.
The best he has is some fresh vegetables sitting around, already partially nibbled on by his houseguest, if he has to guess.  For chops up the half-consumed carrot and other assorted veggies and sets it on a plate.  Then, he sets it near the bed and steps back to the kitchen in hopes of drawing it out.  He tries his best to keep out of sight, and eventually, after what feels like an eternity, For hears the small sound of crunching and he smiles.  Yes, it worked.  As tempted as he is to check on the thing, he leaves it be, letting it eat in peace.
When the sound of crunching dies down, For still stays where he stands in his tiny kitchen until he notices the cat slowly peeking around the wall to look for him.  For exhales a soft laugh and slowly squats again and holds out a loosely curled fist for it to sniff.  Surprisingly, it slowly creeps forward to For before it bumps its head against his hand.  He can’t help but emit a gasp of surprise and joy.  Slowly, he pets its tiny head and runs his hand along its spine, feeling how soft its fur is underneath his hand.
It still seems nervous, but not as nervous as it has been.  “Was feedin’ you all I needed to get you to like me?” For asks it in a soft, but amused voice.  “Jeez.  Didn’t know it’d be that easy.”  The cat spends its time wandering about his kitchen while For shifts to sit on the floorboards, watching it explore.  “You know, if you stick around, I’ll get you some fish.  Cats like fish, right?”  The cat turns and stares, but indicates no understanding.  If only he was one of those psychics that could talk to animals. That’d make this easier.
Still, he’s pleased with how things have turned out here.  He can’t complain at all, nor would does he want to.  For a moment, For wonders if the cat belongs to someone, but finally seeing the cat up close allows him to note how skinny and small it is.  It’s definitely been living on its own, so guess it’s up for grabs; well, assuming the cat would like to stick around.  Based on how it’s acting, For certainly hopes it’ll stay.  It seems to like him well enough.
Over the next few days, the cat comes and goes as he (as For soon discovered it was a male cat) pleases, but he remained relatively warm to For, so long as he didn’t spook him too much with his loud walking or anything like that.  He’s even begun to start following For around while he works outside.  It’s probably because For has been sneaking him little treats the entire time, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.  He’s just glad to have the company for once.
Finally, he finds the time to go fishing in the river nearby.  The cat sits on a nearby rock, watching the water and the fish swim by with his full attention.  When For finally catches one, he unhooks it and lets it settle on the ground nearby.  The cat draws near to it cautiously, yet keeps his distance, and For gestures to the fish.  “Hey, man, I caught this for you.  I ain’t eatin’ it, so go for it.”
The cat stares at him, then the fish, then back to him, before finally settling on walking over to start feeding upon the catch.  The cat tears through the fish easily, even for as small as he is.  For can’t make heads nor tails of whether he’s still a kitten or not, but regardless, he is tiny.  Hopefully he’d grow up and gain some weight now that he had it.  It seems like the cat wants to stay.  That’s a first out of all the animals he’s encountered over the past few years.  Maybe with any luck, he could catch more animals later.  He always wanted a dog...
But first, he had to deal with his cat, and he hadn’t even named the thing yet.  Didn’t want to get attached if he ran away and For didn’t see him again, but now he felt confident enough to try.  The cat was pitch black aside from his bright eyes, but he didn’t want to be unoriginal and name it something stupid or unoriginal.  For could swear that it reminded him, though, of something or someone he must have known before, but he just couldn’t place who or what.  But what he could place, however, was a name that kept coming back to the forefront of his mind.
“Wonred’s a pretty good name, right?” For wonders aloud.  The cat looks up and stops his feeding temporarily, then resumes after a pause of silence.  “I mean, it’s pretty original.  Nobody would forget a name like that.  Like, you deserve a name better than Midnight or somethin’ else that’s unoriginal.  Can’t remember what it means, but it’s a good name.  You like it?”  Wonred stares again.  “Well, I like it.  So Wonred it is.”
That night is the first night Wonred feels comfortable enough to get up in the bed with For again like he had before they’d really met.  At first, Wonred hesitates, but after For’s been lying there for a few minutes, he creeps up onto the bed and makes his place of rest For’s chest.  And For refuses to move after that, letting it sleep on top of him until the morning.
