So basically the internet in in RIOTS because Disney casted a TALENTED YOUNG actress to play Ariel in the live action Little Mermaid. Looking at it that way, you might not find a problem with that. The young actress in question is Halle Bailey, an.... wait for it.... African American actress. 

Now many people are finding a problem with this, because you know.... that’s what were focusing anger on these days. What i’m here to do is clear up the confusion, debunk some outlandish theories, and make a few people angry along the way, cause that’s what the internet is for.

“What if Black Panther were white??”

Then that would make Killmonger’s speech at the end about being buried near the ocean to be with his enslaved ancestors a little confusing, right? Also how the whole story-line deals with Egyptian mythology and ancient African practices such as the Dora Milaje (the female warriors) and the frequent usage of African phrases in Xhosa and Swahili.

 “What if Tiana was white??”

There is some CLEAR segregation throughout the whole movie. In one of the first scenes in the whole movie, you can see the difference between the white part of town and the African American part.  From the food to the music and the culture that surrounds Tiana, this is clearly a movie about an African American woman The movie also shows Tiana’s struggle to make a career and start her own restaurant in 1920′s New Orleans. The whole subject and plot of the movie would’ve had to change if she were portrayed by a  white woman. 

“But Ariel is a redhead!”

“Does this mean we can make Mulan or Pocahontas or any other princess black now?”

Nooooooo no you really can’t. 

Mulan’s story is about her being a woman in China wanting to save her father from imminent death. But serving in the army in China as a woman is punishable by DEATH, so this story is about her being Chinese, in China

Pocahontas’s story is about her dealing with white people invading her homeland and trying to find peace between the natives and whites. Her story is about her being Native American and having to deal with the white people.

No where in Ariel’s story does it talk about her having to deal with the fact that she’s white and is oppressed because of that. Her story is about how she want’s to be with a human, but she can’t, because she is a fish person. If anything the only oppression she face’s is because she is a literal mermaid. 

Y’all don’t wanna face the facts and face the truth that deep down you’re uncomfortable that Ariel is being played by a black actress is because you’re either A) a racist B) uncomfortable because of how talented she is, or C) just uncomfortable about seeing an African American person play a role that was once played by a white person.
