Kenneth's birthday party had been up and running for a bit, and Maureen had just served dinner, when Emma quickly pulled her brother aside and into the kitchen. The news she had to share required privacy for now.
Although she was only in the early days of her second pregnancy, Emma figured that Ken's birthday was a good opportunity to let him know already. He loved his role as Louis's uncle, so she knew this would bring some extra joy for his special day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right after the announcement, the siblings heard their mother calling from the other room. It was time for Kenneth to blow out his candles in front of everybody, so they could finally start their meal.
Kenneth entered adulthood with excitement. His interest in music had grown into a real talent, and now that he did not have to worry about school, he could finally focus all of his time on it.
[TRANSCRIPT]
Emma: "Sorry to drag you away from the party, Kenny."
Kenneth: "Don't worry, I could use a quick break. What's up?"
Emma: "Well, I didn't want to take away the attention, but I thought you could have the honour of knowing early. Being the birthday kid and all that."
Emma: "It looks like you're becoming an uncle yet again!"
Kenneth: "Really Emma? That's amazing! I'm so happy for you! And for me, of course."
*Emma laughs*

Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Tumblr media
Jojo Rabbit walks a delicate line. One scene is laugh-out-loud, darkly comedic. The next is soul-crushing. When you look at it on paper, it shouldn’t work. On the screen, it’s memorable, tender, hilarious and insightful - a picture like none other. There are some who will find it tasteless but for the rest, it's one you'll be compelled to revisit.
In the final years of WWII, Ten-year-old Johannes “Jojo” Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) dreams of serving in Nazi Germany's army like his absent father. While at Hitler Youth Camp, Jojo follows the advice of his imaginary best friend, a child’s rendition of Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi). After an accident cripples him, he is sent back home. There, he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is harbouring a Jewish teenaged girl (Thomasin McKenzie).
This film excels at exposing the hypocrisy of the propaganda necessary to keep the Nazi machine (and similar systems) going. Jojo is only a child and even he has difficulty understanding how Elsa can be a demonic creature with horns and wings that drinks blood and can mind control good German boys, is cripplingly fascinated with shiny things and also an enemy the Nazis will easily eliminate. To him, she looks just like a normal girl. None of the interactions they have confirm her as dangerous.
The characters of Elsa, Jojo and his mother are all played relatively straight. Everyone else is a living contradiction. Rebel Wilson plays Fräulein Rahm. Despite being unmarried, she boasts having given birth to 18 children for Germany. How that’s possible, who knows. Her unreleting enthusiasm for the Nazi cause is bizarre considering her job at the Hitler Youth camp is to teach the girls there to dress wounds, take care of the injured… and have children. Not particularly exciting compared to the boys, who get to play with live munitions and enjoy the outdoors. The next noteworthy contradiction within the film is Nazi Germany’s attitude towards children. We’re told they’re the future, that the world will belong to them but as the tide of war shifts, we see the kids become be extremely disposable in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bit of off-sceen gruesomeness. The whole thing is topped by Taika Waititi’s portrayal of Hitler. Self-described as a Polynesian Jew, even if Waititi wasn’t directing and writing, his casting would feel like a smart, subversive inside joke. As the film begins, this Adolf Hitler is Jojo’s best friend. Once the boy starts questioning what the authorities have been feeding him, Hitler becomes increasingly hostile and comical. He’s more “so pathetic you’re glad you can laugh at him” than “funny because it’s so wrong to see Hitler doing this” kind of funny.
Lest you think this film does not take what happened during WWII seriously, understand that key scenes make you forget all about the fanciful imagination of Jojo’s world and bring you back to reality. The scenes with him and his mother, for example, are surprisingly grounded. You can feel the exhasperation Rosie must feel as her son makes all of these statements about Adolf Hitler, the Nazi cause, Jews and Germany. How frustrating it must be for her to endure what she hears. She could tell Jojo what the truth is, but he's a child. He doesn't understand what's really going on and doesn't understand that admitting the truth out loud could have serious consequences.
Though there are some big, memorable laughs within Jojo Rabbit, the dramatic revelations are so sobering that the drama/comedy split doesn't feel like it's down the middle. Said revelations only come in during the latter half of the movie, however, so they hit you when you least expect it - and hit you hard. This is not the kind of movie you easily forget precisely because it makes bold, bizarre-sounding choices. Though there is a chance you'll be so off-put by "Jojo Rabbit" that it won't be your cup of tea, every move that's being made has been carefully considered and the themes used throughout make it a picture I don't hesitate to recommend. This is a good thing My family and home life. It’s still my favourite place to be. Football in all its gross financial injustices, still remains a truly entertaining, all welcoming spectacle – a break from our  realities. I spent a lot of my days obsessed with the beautiful game. My own team Tottenham’s reimagining as a team for the neutral under Ange Postecoglou. I’ve had a serious post-covid hangover about going out; crowds and especially going to concerts. But still this year I managed to catch a few shows. John Cale and Knife Girl at the Helsinki Festival was very special. Elvis Costello at Kulttuuritalo was a great way to spend an evening – I didn’t really want it to end (and this was also a rare date with my partner!) Emma Ruth Rundle, Sorry, Jake Xerxes Fussell were good festival experiences. I’m an eternal optimist with dreams that we can all get along, people can be who they wanna be and somehow humanity pulls together to save the planet. My dream state staves off the dark feelings that are increasingly hard to ignore.
This is a low The Israel demolition of Palestine in response to Hamas atrocities is a key world happening which will resonate for decades to come. British Conservatives and all right wing ideologues who – in collusion with the mainstream media – spend most of their time demonising refugees and the trans community. The public discussion around minorities in Finland is base and inhumane. This right-wing Finnish government has been a hard dose of reality that has sprung many of us out of our comfort zones. The casual racism of the Finnish government has normalised terminology that should offend everyone. Disgraceful. The lack of a moral compass or compassion in world politics – who exactly are the good guys? I hope someone could point out who’s looking out for us all nowadays? Elon Musk and the destabilising of Twitter. He just couldn’t leave it alone could he? The unstoppable rise of AI. It’s a slow process (or maybe a fast one) that results in the death of a certain kind of creativity. Hearing that some people in the Music business are using AI to write press releases is a little sad. The Saudi exploitation of football.  It doesn’t stop. How long till the whole of football is owned by Saudi Arabia? The Vinyl market  becoming an expensive artefact for the wealthy. In typical Music Industry fashion, the vinyl format becomes revitalised only for the music industry to make the price prohibitive for most people. Own goals are rarely clearer.
Future To be a better me.
Happy holidays x

I'm torn between wanting to know about Tim or Dave for the WiP thing.....
Well, maybe I’ll be generous and give you both! (I had to search for both of these because they were lost in the abyss of my other shit lol)
Tim Rockwell:
“Fuck off Spencer. At least I’m thorough enough to get the job done— according to Christine in booking, that’s one area you’re lacking in.” You deadpan your annoyance towards him, he seems to always find your last nerve— if he’d spent as much time trying to be a decent detective as he did trying to get his dick wet, he might be some what tolerable to be around.
Dave York:
Her and Dave had always seemed rock solid in their marriage. You never heard about fights or disagreements. Carol never complained about him in any aspect. Dave was always the outstanding husband everyone adored. And while he was ever the dutiful husband, he was equally handsome. Carol knew women looked at him too. But that wasn’t enough for her. He wasn’t enough for her.
She met Glenn through work and kept it as hidden as much as she could. But as they got more serious, the quick fucks in the office weren’t enough for them. So Carol had to think quick on her feet, come up with something that could get her more time with Glen.
In comes Girl’s Night.
I have a good portion of both of these done too 😅

Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2019)
Cast: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Taika Waititi, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen, Stephen Merchant, Archie Yates. Screenplay: Taika Waititi, based on a novel by Christine Leunens. Cinematography: Mihai Malaimare Jr. Production design: Ra Vincent. Film editing: Tom Eagles. Music: Michael Giacchino.
Taika Waititi's brilliant, queasy comedy Jojo Rabbit might be seen as a parody of the feel-good movie -- the ability to tack a happy ending on even a story about Nazism. Not that the end of Jojo Rabbit is, objectively regarded, happy. We're left with Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) and Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) as street orphans in a defeated Germany. But they're dancing, which is what Elsa wanted to do when the war ended, and that kind of makes everything right. Fortunately, our awareness that the film is a fantasia on dark themes, belonging in the category of movies like Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro, 2006) that fuse fairy tale elements and a childlike vision with real world horrors, is set early on, when we discover that Jojo has an imaginary friend, none other than Adolf Hitler (Waititi). And that the brutality of Nazis is being caricatured by actors like Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson. Jojo is a naïf in a hard and horrible world, which we see through his innocent eyes, just as we see Wonderland (a place of lunacy and cruelty) through the innocent eyes of Alice. It takes nothing away from the fine performances of young Davis and McKenzie, or from the darkly hilarious ones of Waititi, Rockwell, and Wilson, to say that the heart of the film, giving a performance that took my breath away, was Scarlett Johansson, who made beautiful sense of a role that shouldn't have worked at all: Jojo's mother, the secret resistance worker who tolerates her son's adulation of the Nazis while at the same time hiding a young Jewish girl in the walls of their house. We see her through three distinct points of view: Jojo's, Elsa's, and another that gradually becomes our own, and the outcome of her story, when these points of view finally merge, is heartbreaking even in the midst of the caricature of the real world that the film presents. The audacity of Waititi's movie has been likened to that of Life Is Beautiful (Roberto Benigni, 1999), a movie I hated, so I can understand the critics who thought Jojo Rabbit went too far, that it didn't cohere, but I can't entirely agree.

Still at the estate, the wedding dinner was held in the dining room that was decorated with lavish old furniture. While the children had been sent home due to it being late at night, the rest of the family gathered for fancy roasts and the cake Maureen had baked that morning.
Emma and Niall looked lovingly into each other's eyes as they made the first cut to the cake. It almost felt surreal that all of this was really happening, and yet it felt the most right anything had ever felt.

@themckaytriarchy (new post editor + blog move)
Fawcett City is like a fever dream of whomever wrote Pleasantville–or, no, it’s more like the writer of Pleasantville got stoned off his ass near Binder Square and came up with the outline for Pleasantville after coming down from his trip. The place is–quaint. Timeless. Opal City has elegance and architecture. Gotham has history and a certain atmosphere. Metropolis has… Superman, which Tess supposes is a rather one-sided view of the place, but sometimes, the ‘opolises’ run together.
Fawcett, though? Outdated. ‘Ten shirts for a dollar, dates at the drive-in, creepy Norman Rockwell calendar photoshoot’ behind.
Still, ‘behind’ is harmless to a certain point. The malt shops here make a decent egg cream, too. Tess McKay stirs a straw around in her glass as she watches traffic through the malt shop window. (Polished Chevys and Christine-red Plymouths. Beautiful cars.) No one is honking or cursing in the roads, and–
“Oh,” is all she says at the first rumble. (Yeah, ‘oh’ is all she comes up with, but that’s all that needs saying. ‘Oh’, as in ‘oh, fuck’, as in ‘oh, shit’, as in, ‘oh, here we go again.) The man at the next table blurts out, ‘what the hell was that?’ only to hurry after his wife, who’s already hauling their child by the arm with all the momentum of a city dweller who’s seen things. She watches them go before her eyes roll toward the wall mounted television set. The football game flickers to static, and then a Very Special Report.
As the tiled floor rumbles beneath her feet and others break into nervous murmurs or cries, eyes wide in the way of folk who know shit’s about to hit the fan, she sits back hard in her chair, closes her own eyes against the sight of the tv screen, and exhales slowly. She grinds her teeth; her hands are clasped on the table, white-knuckled.
Two minutes later, no Marvel family. People are heading underground or cramming themselves into bathrooms, parents hunched over children to protect them from falling debris.
‘Don’t rush into this.’ Her hands are clasped on the table, white-knuckled. The room–and Fawcett City itself–are very small now. ‘You don’t get to do this, you do not get to play G-d, Tessie, you do not, you–’
Four minutes later, the infrastructure of a city and the very real knowledge her own actions might leave people homeless or dead becomes harder to argue. (On the television, a long, sinuous tail shears glass and rebar from the side of a skyscraper.) People are already dying.
‘Come on, Marvels, come on, come on, come on–’ Her lips form the words. ‘Come on, come on, come on–’
Five minutes later, she’s hell for leather out the door–
By the time she reaches the end of the street, piss is running down her legs, blood from her eyes, and her great big g-ddamned glorious charge is a stagger. (There’s no graceful way to shed herself, and maybe that’s how it should be, when all these soft, breakable people are having their lives upended by–whatever strange, terrible things are to them. Blood for blood and pain for pain.) She bares her teeth at the distant, hulking dragon of a thing
“I am–” she wheezes as pink, ropy saliva oozes from the corner of her mouth (broken teeth) “–going to fucking put you in the–”
Two seconds later: she’s hit the pavement, face first and then on her hands and knees as her legs disarticulate and reverse. Her hair is gone. Fingernails.
Four seconds: a sheet of skin as her body, bent and terrifying, bursts through her clothing. Slippery red muscle.
Five seconds: her jaw hangs, unhinged and wide.
Thirteen seconds: shit’s on, and she rises from the scraps of her woman’s body, the fixed sneer of her face exposing row upon row of teeth as she rumbles, low in her throat.  No more egg custards, eerie nostalgia, and maybe no future for herself when all is said and done. Only excitement, and hard, relentless power.
(No, careful, careful, careful–)
Her long, ropy tongue darts out to taste the air, spattering thick ribbons of saliva across broken windows and unlucky stragglers.
G-d, but it’s good to stretch.
This time, Woolf hits the ground running, and the ground shakes beneath her feet–
Tumblr media
The beast ahead pauses, one foot crushing a parking garage, a clawed hand gripping a bridge as if it were a handrail in a bathtub. It lets out a low growl that rattles glass.
No Marvel family. No Ibis the Invincible. Sometimes, it's convenient Fawcett is so cut off from the world at large. Other times, it's a bitch- such as now, when disaster relief will take days- weeks, even- to arrive on scene. News travels out of this little metropolis slowly unless the Sivana Corporation deems it to be worth expediting with a bit of elbow grease and a whole lot of questionable technology that may or may not border on the arcane.
The beast- the demon- straightens, its form unsettled and fluid, as if it's sizing up its opponent to determine the best way to make use of something more fun than crunching down on another car or feeling the pop-pop-pop of human bodies bursting like swollen ticks between its immense fingers or beneath its clawed feet.
Three stories? Well. It would be a fool to not have somewhat of an advantage....say, five stories. With this shifting and changing comes a noxious cloud, a whiff of rot and sulfur. Moving like a leviathan, bereft of the speed Woolf possesses, it turns and roars, throwing a chunk of cement like it's part of the olympic shot put team, merely to see how quick this deliciously enticing challenger truly is...and how impervious to such inconsequential blows.
High above, perched on an untouched beacon of a skyscraper, Thaddeus Sivana watches...and waits.
