I Hate How She Talks About Snow White

"People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it's like, yeah, it is − because it needed that. It's an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond 'Someday My Prince Will Come. "

Let me tell you a little something's about that "85-year-old cartoon," miss Zegler.

It was the first-ever cel-animated feature-length full-color film. Ever. Ever. EVER. I'm worried that you're not hearing me. This movie was Disney inventing the modern animated film. Spirited Away, Into the Spider-Verse, Tangled, you don't get to have any of these without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937.)

Speaking of what you wouldn't get without this movie, it includes anime as a genre. Not just in technique (because again, nobody animated more than shorts before this movie) but in style and story. Anime, as it is now, wouldn't exist without Osamu Tezuka, "The God of Manga," who wouldn't have pioneered anime storytelling in the 1940s without having watched and learned from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the 1930s. No "weeb" culture, no Princess Mononoke, no DragonBall Z, no My Hero Academia, no Demonslayer, and no Naruto without this "85-year-old cartoon."

It was praised, not just for its technical marvels, not just for its synchronized craft of sound and action, but primarily and enduringly because people felt like the characters were real. They felt more like they were watching something true to life than they did watching silent, live-action films with real actors and actresses. They couldn't believe that an animated character could make kids wet their pants as she flees, frightened, through the forest, or grown adults cry with grieving Dwarves. Consistently.

Walt Disney Studios was built on this movie. No no; you're not understanding me. Literally, the studio in Burbank, out of which has come legends of this craft of animated filmmaking, was literally built on the incredible, odds-defying, record-breaking profits of just Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, specifically.

Speaking of record-breaking profits, this movie is the highest-grossing animated film in history. Still. TO THIS DAY. And it was made during the Great Depression.

In fact, it made four times as much money than any other film, in any other genre, released during that time period. It was actually THE highest-grossing film of all time, in any genre, until nothing less than Gone With the Wind, herself, came along to take the throne.

It was the first-ever animated movie to be selected for the National Film Registry. Actually, it was one of the first movies, period, to ever go into the registry at all. You know what else is in the NFR? The original West Side Story, the remake of which is responsible for Rachel Ziegler's widespread fame.

Walt Disney sacrificed for this movie to be invented. Literally, he took out a mortgage on his house and screened the movie to banks for loans to finish paying for it, because everyone from the media to his own wife and brother told him he was crazy to make this movie. And you want to tell me it's just an 85-year-old cartoon that needs the most meaningless of updates, with your tender 8 years in the business?

Speaking of sacrifice, this movie employed over 750 people, and they worked immeasurable hours of overtime, and invented--literally invented--so many new techniques that are still used in filmmaking today, that Walt Disney, in a move that NO OTHER STUDIO IN HOLLYWOOD was doing in the 30's, put this in the opening credits: "My sincere appreciation to the members of my staff whose loyalty and creative endeavor made possible this production." Not the end credits, like movies love to do today as a virtue-signal. The opening credits.

It's legacy endures. Your little "85-year-old cartoon" sold more than 1 million DVD copies upon re-release. Just on its first day. The Beatles quoted Snow White in one of their songs. Legacy directors call it "the greatest film ever made." Everything from Rolling Stones to the American Film Institute call this move one of the most influential masterpieces of our culture. This movie doesn't need anything from anybody. This movie is a cultural juggernaut for America. It's a staple in the art of filmmaking--and art, in general. It is the foundation of the Walt Disney Company, of modern children's media in the West, and of modern adaptations of classical fairy tales in the West. When you think only in the base, low, mean terms of "race" and "progressivism" you start taking things that are actually worlds-away from being in your league to judge, and you relegate them to silly ignorant phrases like "85-year-old cartoon" to explain why what you're doing is somehow better.

Sit down and be humble. Who the heck are you?

I dunno if it’s because I’m a girl or what, but every time I start a new piece of media I’m always on the lookout for how and where women are implemented. Regardless of medium or genre and oftentimes beyond even, are the women well written or powerful. I want to see how relevant the female voice is to the universe as a whole.

I tend to dabble in anime but one thing that has always pissed me off is the power imbalance between females and males built in regardless of how well written they may be. Most recently I’ve been catching up to kaiju no 8 and honestly all the female characters are pretty good. Some are even very strong! But honestly that strength makes the disparity even harder to ignore when the actual relevant female characters number only 3 and one of them is dead. All the very strongest people are men and there are just. So many of them. Why is the ratio greater than 3:1 for all the side characters and why is there only one girl among all the new recruits?? If the strong women exist and are not being impeded narratively by sexism— why is it so unequal?? The logic isn’t logicing because if in many of these series the women are strong and they are cool and it’s clear they have what it takes to be successful, why are they are never at the very top or in the highest positions of power and still often in the minority. I’m looking at you jjk/mha/demonslayer.

And I was like, okay, now I want to think about media where it’s the opposite. Female oriented and all that. It’s honestly hard to find because even in media directed at women, it’s often in a universe that mirrors our own so structurally it’s pretty sexist. The best examples of female-centric media are usually media aimed at children. I loved She-ra because nearly all the most powerful characters were women and honestly the men were given the token guy treatment I was so used to seeing in all other media. Like, the men u get, hordak, bow and seahawk, they’re great! But it’s also—just them in a sea of strong kickass women and the story functions just fine. See also basically any Barbie movie where men are only included to be love interests and do little else. Or even sailor moon/magical girl shows. It is so possible for women to hold up a narrative on their own, despite what Hollywood would have you believe. Unfortunately these narratives are hard to find outside of children’s shows.

Most media falls somewhere in the middle though, like in orv where it is honestly one of the closest examples of an evenly represented work. The female characters are amazing and strong and very much vital to the story, and the team make up is pretty 50-50. However, I still get a little pissed thinking about how the majority of high level constellations are male and practically all myth grade and above are male too. All the characters and incarnations are very equal it’s just the top layer that feels a bit skewed to me.

All this to say, I would like a piece of media where from the bottom to the top the men and women stand toe to toe. Feel free to give recs if you know any!

So overall I liked the Netflix Sandman, and I might write up something more specific than that at some point, but just like, for the record, I have Complaints but overall I liked it.  That said, I am going to complain, right now, I'm sorry, I am a middle-aged dude on the internet and a hefty fine does get levied if I don't say something negative about a Nostalgia Property marketed to me, my hands are tied.  Johanna Constantine doesn't work.  There!  I said it!  She doesn't work!

To be fair, I will say that no version of John Constantine has ever worked for me on screen – the Keanu Reeves movie is terrible, and I did really want to like the tv version, but I don't.  I always want to like these things!  Because I dearly love John Constantine.  I'm the kind of weird about Constantine that other people are about Batman, he is simply THE comic book character to me, an opinion I developed while my adult tastes were forming in late adolescence around Sandman and Everything Alan Moore Ever Touched In His Life.  The 90s were not on balance a golden age in comics, and a lot of things were actually uhhhh, really terrible, but I stuck with Hellblazer much longer than I did with other titles, because of Constantine.  He's mean, he's smart, he's deeply compassionate, he's a punk, he's a demonslayer, he's a con man, he's a fuckboy, he's a wizard, he's haunted, he's footloose, he's charismatic, he's the whole fucking package.

So you know, it didn't fully thrill me when they announced the genderflip for this show, because we've yet to get a live-action version of the actual character that I love, but you know, I was willing to be wooed.  I think I went in with an open mind, just recognizing that this was going to be a new thing and trying to evaluate it on its own terms.  And I don't think I'm just kidding myself; I can imagine a Johanna Constantine that would've hit the right buttons for me.  It's hard to know for sure, but I really did try to extend her every opportunity to embody the spirit of the character.

And I don't know why they made the choices they did.  Obviously people involved had their reasons.  But the thing is, for me, The Spirit of John Constantine is that he's kind of a mess.  He gets involved in shit because he can't leave shit alone, and he goes all in so that he's over his head.  He fucks up so much.  He's exhausted, he's bitter, he's had a few full-tilt mental breakdowns, his ghosts are literally and metaphorically all around him at all times.  Constantine is a very specific type of scruffy, intense sexy, a guy who's seen and done it all, the archetype of “will probably ruin your life, but the dick is insane.”  Can I imagine a female version of that character? Fuck yeah, I can!  Unfortunately, it's hard to imagine the female version of that character making it onto the screen.

What they did was an extremely safe version of the character.  She's young and conventionally attractive, which okay, it's a tv show.  Fine. But she's also so styled; she has perfect makeup and sleek hair and a neat coat that doesn't look like she's ever slept in it.  I mean, don't get me wrong, some versions of John Constantine have been a little more put-together than others, and I do think he's rocked the odd nice suit as well as sometimes looking like a bridge troll, but it's impossible for me to think that Netflix was just not going to do anything to this actress that made her look like less than a million bucks, for what reads to me as Deeply Gendered Reasons.

And that's kind of reflected all the way down in her character.  She approaches the exorcism in an entirely mercenary way – which, again, that element of John Constantine has always been there (he's a guy who's gone without enough that he values getting his where he can),  but choosing to show only that element, and not the way that Constantine is so often motivated by empathy for the underdog, is just a real wrong move in my opinion.  Also – and I know there are time constraints here and we can't delve deeply into Constantine Lore while Morpheus is the actual protagonist – but the exorcism they show us presents what I guess is meant to be a Routine Job for Johanna, and it's really just the “say the spell with your whole chest” school of wizardry. But the fun of John Constantine wasn't that he could just throw fireballs at demons or whatever!  He was smart and tricky and resourceful, he outfoxed demons more often than he overpowered them. And that's not the point of the episode, but when that's absent from our view of A Typical Day In the Life of Johanna Constantine, then we don't know whether or not she's smart or tricky or resourceful.  We just know that she can read the Latin real good, so she can charge a lot of money.  And that makes her a generic spellcaster to me; I don't particularly recognize that portrayal as fundamentally Constantine.

Even the aspect of the character that seems kind of potentially subversive when genderflipped, the whole “Constantine leaves a gender-neutral trail of broken hearts wherever s/he goes” thing, just kind of.  Doesn't work in this version, because without any context it just looks like “Constantine doesn't do relationships” for, I don't know, Hot Girl Reasons. Maybe that's not fair – maybe we're not supposed to take it as reliable when Johanna says she dipped out on Rachel just kinda because she didn't want to get as serious as Rachel did.  I'd have to reread Preludes & Nocturnes, which I haven't done in a while, to see how much what we're told of Rachel and Johanna matches what we're told of Rachel and John; maybe it just doesn't work for me because by the time Rachel is introduced there's already a failure to make Johanna seem like a messy person with a history of messy, broken relationships.  She seems shocked to learn that things went badly for this woman who loved her after Johanna fucked off, in a way that strikes me as not right for Constantine, who's a character with a lot of social and emotional intelligence that helps him navigate tight situations.  I don't know, that's the point that I'm least confident about my read on; I may just be uncharitable in this case.

It's a small part of the overall series, so the fact that I think they stripped out what makes John distinctive is a bummer for me personally, but hardly fatal to the show.  It's not a big deal.  It's not a big deal which is why I'm complaining about it on the World Wide Web for 1000 words.  To show how much it's not a big deal to me.  It's fine, I'm fine.

DAMIEN ANGELUS ARDELEANU was born over a thousand years ago in the region of Transylvania in Romania. He was a part of a rather regular family and for the most part, this was a multi-generational household. He really adored his siblings growing up and his parents, though weirdly enough, dad sometimes left for long periods of time. He was definitely a mama's boy, and it was sad and worrying when she grew ill and passed away. After it became evident what was happening and Damien and the rest of his siblings were cursed all because of their father's actions, things changed. They were... monsters. They were a new kind of monster that never had stepped foot on this earth, with great power and a thirst for blood.

Within the family of original vampire siblings was the eldest brother who gave himself the daunting deed of being the patriarch of the family. Damien hated this, especially after the first three hundred years. This was when he wanted to go his own way, do as he wished and didn't want to follow whatever strict rules were put in place for the family to be a responsible set of originals. So, he lashed out. First, at his eldest brother, and then in an anger towards his other siblings, he went on a murder spree in the village they were currently staying at. He completely saw red. Couldn't stop until it was over. It was the first and last time he'd ever committed such violence in that manner. But it's an event he forever remembers in his head and one he wishes he could forget. Sadly, as it turns out, he is capable of horrible things.

He lost many of his direct fledglings. It was bad luck, but newborns his direct fledglings created seemed to go on just fine, thus Damien's vampire line is strong enough after all those years. He is very selective with who he turns now, solely because he's afraid they'll end up dying on him. Though one fledgling he did create ended up being the love of his life who was about to die from the black plague. It's unfortunate how things turned out, solely because Damien had done it out of selfish reasons—he didn't want to lose his love, even if his love wished to not be turned into a vampire. At the moment, Damien turned a woman more recently—about a week ago—after befriending her at a concert. It was too save her life, and unlike his love, she was grateful. Though as a baby fledgling, Damien's got his hands tied with making sure she's the best she can be at being a vampire.

Damien currently resides in Los Santos. He's been living there for forty years. At first, hiding in plain sight was easy enough, until it became obvious to humans that there were supernatural creatures amongst them. His tattoo and piercing shop, Scarlet Rose Piercing & Tattoo, has had a reputable reputation for thirty-five years and is very inclusive to creatures and humans alike—both employees and clientele. Art is one of the reasons he manages to drag himself out of bed, along with his Norwegian Forest Cat, Emilia (or Emmy for short), and of course, as been said many times before, the people he cares about.

No JW toys related stuff, there just my early birthday gift of this month, I was originally gonna get new game for Nintendo switch, but I’m ultimately gonna save it for my birthday on July 22. But what I get instead is just a few things. One is NatGeo Magazine featured Dinosaurs: A New Look at the Prehistoric Icons, and second came Demon Slayer, a volume one manga is possibly highly intense ever since I watched first 2 seasons and a slip up movie version. Then I also got few things from hobby lobby right next to Entertainmart. The latter which are pencil grip, pencil extenders and a huge Drawing Board with clips, this is the second time where I just brought another clip drawing board since the first one is kind a small in compared to Bristol. So regardless how much do I end up spend money, I just hope I could save mines for next time by coming two to next week before my birthday.
