Okay, so I just binged Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral and it was really good!!! My least favorite part was easily the infidelity (really hate that pretty much always) but that was a really small part. What I really loved about it though was that it wasn’t about the main romance. Like, the actual dating part is just sort of a montage in maybe two episodes. But it is about friendships and friends and loss and platonic! love and I really liked that. I was really happy that it wasn’t about the supporting characters all dropping their lives to help Maya but rather that it was a better depiction of healthy friendships (mostly). Everyone had their own lives but all made time for each other and their problems. I liked that they all watched love chalet to support Craig, and that Maya gave Duffy a chance and that Duffy gave Maya an out. And that they all supported Ainsley through her mess. I liked that Ainsley worked through her stuff from being left at the altar and in the end the happy ending wasn’t just about Kash and Maya (super cute tho), but about this great circle of friends not just staying together but growing stronger and making space for new people. It was a really cute story that had some fun twists and I really loved it.

31. Four Weddings and a Funeral: Maya and Duffy

So I'm pretty sure this is the only gif on the list that doesn't show both characters. And that's because this is more of a one sided ship for me. And if I'm being honest, it's because I didn't really like Maya that much. But I love Duffy! And I'm a huge sucker for the cute guy who's in love with his best friend. And come on, this confession is just the cutest!

I do ship Joshaya and Rucas way more than Lucaya. But I really did ship these guys for a minute too. And I loved the idea of them liking each other. I did not, however, totally love the way the triangle was resolved. Where they decided Maya didn't really like Lucas, she just pretended to like him or whatever because she became too much like Riley. And the only reason she became like Riley and liked Lucas was to protect her or whatever. Wasn't a fan of that. I would've liked it a lot more if they decided, that yes, Maya did in fact like Lucas for a little bit, but then got over it and liked Josh more. That just seems like it would've been more realistic or believable to me.

36. Gravity Falls: Wendy and Dipper

I think Dipper's crush on Wendy is really cute. So I like to believe when he grows up and the age difference doesn't matter anymore, they get together.

rewatch notes, four weddings and a funeral: episode 9

(I skipped liveblogging a bunch)

it is such modern nonsense to believe that sleeping together is something that should come before saying I love you as is the assumption that saying “I love you” is the bigger commitment here!! (pauses to roll eyes for 1000 years) and the fact that Kash and Maya do sleep together when they do is the most frustrating part of their storyline for me (like, I get it that these characters don’t live by my moral code so it shouldn’t surprise me but even within the context of their lives it’s too soon and I don’t like it) but BOTH of these things out of the way-------it completely kills me that Kash and Maya really do love each other (and want to tell each other that) as quickly as they do. It doesn’t feel fake to me or forced; they fit together like puzzle pieces and their faces are so soft and gentle when they are together, full of such light and simple ordinary warmth, and they were like that from the beginning so the fact that they’ve technically been dating for an evening and then they want to tell each other they love each other both feels right and makes me want to die. i just. kill me now.

Craig: I love when the right thing to do is also the easy thing to do. AS;DLFJSANKLF;SAJNFKLASLDJFNLS;FASF I LOVE HIM SO MUCH THIS IS MY FAVORITE LINE

Bryce and Ainsley are a good, good, good couple. Kash and Maya have my Number One Heart but seriously all the couples on this show are so good. And tbh I love them all the same in different ways. Gemma saying “you’re different when you’re with him” to Ainsley. It’s so true! He truly does bring out the best in her and he makes her happy. And he delights in all she is in both a gentle and a protective way. It’s an age difference but it’s an acceptable, even right one!! And it, along with other things about him, is an obstacle my shallow-deep, soft-hard Ainsley needs to struggle with in order to grow!! I love it!

Speaking of. Gemma and Duffy are a stunning couple. Their relationship grows up so naturally. And of course Giles is an integral part of it, as he had to be if it was ever going to work and be good. They love each other as a family unit, one that arises out of Duffy’s tutoring of Giles. Gemma is brilliant and perceptive and hilarious and kind and TOGETHER and she gives Duffy both the groundedness and the dignity that he needs and he gives her the softness and the comfort and the “there for her” that she needs. When she says in their wedding vows “falling in love with you has been one of the sweetest surprises of my life” it perfectly encapsulates their relationship.

Are.....all adorable but really just me stalling. Because. The end of this episode is so hard for me. On the one hand, I 100% understand why Ainsley is mad and feels betrayed. 100%. On the other hand, this is a situation where the explanation “it’s complicated” feels legit to me. It isn’t a moral situation, like the situation in most movies where a couple conducts a relationship the revelation of which will hurt another person. Or at least not strictly a moral situation. Kash and Maya are single and free. And Ainsley, by her own admission, is in love with another person. She has moved on from a relationship she was only ever in for shallow reasons; in doing so, she has found love. So her reaction, however human, is just hard for me to take. It just is. Add to all of that the fact that, however much I have come to love her flaws and all, the sheer fact of the matter is that I cannot shake the feeling that the emotional power of the relationship is swayed in Ainsley’s favor. She’s the one who holds the power. Not even just because she’s white and comes from family money and Maya isn’t and doesn’t. Though. tbh. But because of their different personalities. Maya struggles more than Ainsley, she is quieter, she waits while Ainsley speaks and acts. And so even though I understand that it was an act of betrayal (though seemingly more that way by the unfortunate fact that all her friends knew first and Maya hadn’t had a chance to tell her) it’s hard, hard, hard for me to take her side and not to feel Maya’s pain as she stands there absolutely gutted and alone, her hand to pressed to her stomach as she struggles to believe. It feels like I’m not allowed to say it but Ainsley still feels like the one who holds the power, not Maya. So I take Maya’s side.

That said, it is deeply right that Maya ends it with Kash. It crushes me that she does, that scene hurts! But it’s right. Because she’s right. You can’t start a relationship that has at its base the deep hurt of someone you love. You just can’t. And it’s not a moral thing but I guess in a sense it kind of is. And again, a lot of situations that seem on the surface to be the same as Maya’s, do not cause me pain in the same way. Because I don’t blame Maya for not telling Ainsley sooner. It isn’t like some cheating situation. And Maya fought it so hard, tried to deny herself happiness after only knowing it in toxic relationships or half-hearted flashes because she DIDN’T want to hurt Ainsley. And then when fate and circumstances kept pushing them together she took a breath and made a choice. To love him and to let him in. And maybe you could say she shouldn’t have. That that was the betrayal and she shouldn’t have done that. But I don’t hold it against her. I understand her and I love her. All the more because she takes her fragile Kash-and-Ainsley loving heart and breaks it in two for both of them. She really does choose Ainsley and so much of the next episode hurts me as I watch Ainsley, in addition to her real pain, ALSO be a giant baby about it all. Because again. Who holds the power? Ainsley. I’m so proud of Maya for sacrificing Kash like that. It’s so human to me that she couldn’t do it until she’d actually done the hurting of Ainsley and so lands herself in the awful, awful, awful situation of losing both of them at once. But I’m so proud of her. I just wanted to say that. I AM SO PROUD OF HER.

Kash telling her he loves her. Three times. Is a dagger to my chest. It is gentle and it is real and it’s the truth of it all.

And that makes it all the more beautiful that Maya walks away.

Now excuse me i Have to go cry now.

I started watching Mindy Kahling’s Four weddings and a funeral and I am happy that Duffy got his girl, but at the same time Maya doesn’t ever know what she wants so I am awaiting the his impending heart break.
