Bhagwad Geeta teaches us to be Calm!

And as per modern science and leading biologist, when human brain evolved:

First came the Brain Stem. It’s the basic part of the brain which dictates functions like breathing, body movement etc.

After Brain Stem, Limbic System evolved. This part carries all the emotions and feeling. This part has very little or no rational thoughts; and only emotions like anger, happiness, lust etc.

At the end came the Cortex region, which is the most sophisticated part of the brain where intelligence, rational thoughts, knowledge develops.

But the funny thing is during the period of evolution, our ancestors survived in the wild because the impulsive nature and emotions of the Limbic system saved them. And this is the brain’s first reaction.

Like if trouble came, the limbic system responded with fear emotion, and directed body to run. Similarly, in fights, anger helped body to give fight for survival.

Thus, our brain is conditioned to give first an impulsive emotional reaction under unusual circumstances, because that’s what helped our ancestor survive.

But, after human civilization, these emotional impulses become obsolete. Because you can’t hurt someone out of anger in the current times. You will regret it and it’s not what humans do (mindless activity).

Instead, the current society and human civilization demand to utilize the cortex region of the brain to think before you act and understand the emotions, but it takes more time than emotional impulse. Thus, a hard thing which requires control of cortex than the limbic system.

But why I am you telling all this? What’s it’s relation with Gita, and it’s teaching?

Well, modern science back the claim that there are two parts of brain: One Rational and One emotional. Rational is more sophisticated and modern. Emotional is simple and old.

Also, Modern science asks you to utilize rational and become aware of emotions and their significance; and utilize them in balance to become better in Human society.

Now here is one Verse from Bhagat Gita:

Isn’t it amazing?

Bhagavad Gita gave this teaching thousands year back which resonates the same thing that modern science says. Gita is even more ahead than it:

Your first reaction to any scenario is emotional, but you must have the calmness to let rational and emotion work in balance for your greater good.

A real-life lesson for the current time.

Why is attachment considered negative in spirituality?

Attachments cloud your mind and make meditation, devotion, or service difficult. It is also the major source of fear and greed.

Being with people and materialism are not negatives if you know the art of remaining detached while playing it all.

Lord Krishna is the greatest example. He lived among all, was respected and loved both by Kauravas and Pandavas, actively participated in the war, and yet remained detached to the whole of it.

Do you know that when the war was about to begin, Dharma and Duryodhana approached Krishna for support?

Krishna told them that He will be on one side and His army on the other, and they had to choose.

As usual, the dull Duryodhana chose Krishna’s army, and Dharma chose Krishna, and we know the rest of it.

Krishna remained on one side and helped Arjuna fight against Krishna’s own army. Have you ever heard of such Spiritual sophistry? Or such a level of detachment while playing the role of life?

Thus the Lord shows us the way!

Attachment deludes and drains, and the soul is lost in layers and layers of illusions, vasanas, and karmic compulsions that it becomes too dull for any spiritual awakening.

So, Beware!

Detachment does not mean that you must run away. It means that you must live among people wisely and smartly.

Serve others, or be served according to your prarabdha. But never cooperate to be entangled. It doesn't matter what kind of life you live.

I am reminded of the following Thirukkural by the great Sage Thiruvalluvar-

பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை அப்பற்றைப் பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு. patruka patratraan patrinai appatraip patruka patru vidaRku meaning.. Get attached to the One who is attached with nothing (God). Hold on to that attachment so you can be relieved from all other attachments.

As a step further, I am reminded of the hymn called Thirumanthiram by an ancient Siddha called Thirumular. It was said that He lived for 3000 years, and wrote one hymn every year. That’s how deep, intense, and Blessed His realized words are!

ஆசை அறுமின்… ஆசை அறும��ன் ஈசனோடு ஆயினும் ஆசை அறுமின் Asai Arumin… Asai Arumin Isanodayinum Asai Arumin Cut the desire… cut the desire! Even if it is with Lord Shiva, cut the desire!

(I had translated as much as I understood. Forgive me if I didn't justify these great Divine hymns)

The great Sage instructs us to cut off desires and attachments even if it is with the great Lord Shiva. Everywhere He asks us to surrender to Shiva, and be one with Him. Still, to show us the dangers of attachments and desires, He had warned us with the above hymn.

The idea is to love all and to do our duties, and yet remain unentangled. Just the way Krishna was! Just the way our realized Sages are! This is good for both Spiritual and mundane life.
