hi! got a question. ive got a story idea i really really want to write. but i dont know how. its the classic "ive got the vibes" but when i try and put pen to paper, the words dont come out right. the scenes are hard to join togther. it is pretty ambitious, but i really do want to write this. any advice?

oh man, that's rough. sometimes with stories like that, you've just got to set them to one side and let them ferment a bit until they're actually ripe to be written. sometimes, though, that doesn't work, and you really do just have to sit down, power through, and try to write it even though it feels like shit and doesn't come out the way you write it. you might surprise yourself, even if it's not in the way you wanted it to be.

alternately, find something else with the same vibes as the thing you want to write. music, book, movie, video game, whatever. commit yourself to listening/reading/watching/playing it. unravel it in your brain. figure out what makes it tick, and take disgusting amounts of inspiration from it. the matilda au was sparked from the musical movie, but only worked for me in writing once i had read matilda (as well as some other Dahl books; Danny the Champion of the World, most notably) cover-to-cover several times to figure out how they ticked.

if all else fails, throw in another genre that you know how to write even better than the one you're already working with. mix them together. eucat clicked because i'm not 100% on writing fae fantasy, but i am 10000% on writing cosmic horror. ditto with the coffeeshop au thing. similarly: throw in some stuff that's really stupidly self-indulgent to make the bumpy middle bits easier to work through. sometimes when connecting-scenes feel bad and boring to write, that's because i haven't worked out the thing to Put In Them that'll make my brain really, really happy.
