How to Play the Ultimate Dark Mage in DnD 5e
Tumblr media
With Halloween right around the corner, I thought I'd delve into an idea I don't see talked about very much: building the ultimate black mage in DnD. For this build, we're not trying to be the best necromancer, or the best damage dealer. What we want is to find the build that grants us the widest arsenal of as many dark magical powers as possible. In order to give the Sorcerer a fair chance, we're going to homebrew to grant the Sorcerer 25 spells known instead of 15, otherwise there's no chance the Sorcerer is going to win.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Not only does Wizard come out on top with an impressive 67 dark magic spells, it is the only class that can learn all 67 spells. The Warlock learns 15 spells and 4 Mystic Arcanum, plus a few more through Eldritch Invocations, Clerics prepare level + WIS so they'll never prepare more than 25, and we had to cheat to give the Divine Soul Sorcerer 25 spells, or else it only gets a measly 15 spells plus one spell based on the alignment of your divine bloodline. We're also cheating a little with the mind games and nightmares category as while mental manipulation is scary and evil, it isn't necessarily the stereotypical evil one invokes with a dark mage. Although Wizard is the clear winner, it's worth pointing out certain interesting data. The Undead Warlock is the master of Necromancy, with the Wizard close behind at 11, separated only by access to Death Ward. Warlock is also the master of Shadow Magic and Eldritch Magic, but that's kind of the Warlock's whole shtick. The Divine Soul Sorcerer is the master of Pestilence magic, making it a great fit for a Plague Doctor type character, as well as Curses & Evil magic, narrowly beating out the Fiend Warlock. The Wizard is the clear master of Mind Games & Nightmares, and the Wizard and Divine Soul Sorcerer are tied at using Necrotic Damage spells. Wizard and Warlock are evenly matched at wielding Fiendish Magic. While the Bard is pretty much restricted to curses and mind games, it is possible to build a bard that uses exclusively dark magic. They just won't be the greatest dark mage of all time. In terms of who wins the most categories, the Divine Soul Sorcerer wins Pestilence, Curses & Evil, and ties for Necrotic Damage. Without considering subclasses, however, Wizard wins Necromancy, Mind Games & Nightmares, and ties for both Fiendish Magic and Necrotic Damage.
Tumblr media
THE BUILD
There are a few good choices for race when building the ultimate dark mage. The Fallen Aasimar's Necrotic Shroud feature adds proficiency bonus Necrotic damage to every attack while the necrotic shroud is active. They also get darkvision and resistance to both necrotic and radiant damage. The Dhampir not only gets dark vision, it lets you stop breathing and make vampiric bite attacks to regain hit points. Reborn are even harder to kill, with advantage against poison, and disease, resistance to poison damage, and advantage on death saves, on top of not needing to eat, drink, sleep, or breathe. But they don't get dark vision. And of course, the Custom Lineage can give your dark mage 60 ft of darkvision, and any feat, letting them take feats like Magic Initiate, Resilient (CON), Shadow-Touched, Eldritch Adept, and more. Ultimately, I feel that the Fallen Aasimar and Reborn are the strongest candidates as they are innately dark and creepy, whereas the Custom Lineage can be made dark and creepy. We'll treat this build as a Fallen Aasimar mostly because Reborns don't get darkvision and that is a pretty huge hindrance. Otherwise, we'd go with Reborn.
Haunted One is the darkest background possible and is also the default background of The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3. We're going to ignore the background's options in order to take Intimidation to bully our way through the campaign and religion to study burials and undead. Since we know we're going Wizard, we'll also pick up arcana to study magic and medicine to study the body, blood, bones, organs, and everything else. However, if you want a sneakier dark mage, you could also go with Deception and Persuasion from our background to maintain a personable façade.
Tumblr media
WIZARD SCHOOL OF NECROMANCY
Of course, necromancy is our subclass of choice. The power to raise a stronger horde of undead and it not being tied to specifically Animate Dead does make the Necromancy Wizard pretty useful. And the Command Undead feature really makes the mastery of dark magic vibe feel earned. There is a case to be made for Evocation. The Overchannel feature that sacrifices HP for damage is very dark mage. However, one feature stacked against an entire subclass of dark magic is no real contest. So, we'll go with the School of Necromancy.
The School of Necromancy also has a feature called Grim Harvest, which heals the Necromancer any time they kill an enemy with a spell, and more-so if it was a Necromancy spell. The spells Wither and Bloom, Vampiric Touch, and Enervation each damage the target with Necrotic damage, then heal the caster by half the damage dealt. These two healing factors can stack, making these very useful spells, and Wither and Bloom and Vampiric Touch can be chosen as Signature Spell and Spell Mastery, giving your necromancer an unlimited use of a way to regain hit points, even if it's rather low. It's more effective as a means to patch oneself up between fights, killing a few squirrels or birds to regain hit points for no cost. A 1 level dip into Life Domain can not only give the Wizard Heavy Armor proficiency and access to the Inflict Wounds spell, it can also further boost the self-healing gained from these three vampiric necromancy spells. Although False Life is on the Wizard spell list, the Eldritch Invocation Fiendish Vigor can give your Wizard a way to spam False Life between every encounter, making them just a little less squishy.

INFERNAL SOUL SORCERER
The Divine Soul Sorcerer did pretty well for itself, so I figured I'd give a 25 spell list known for the DSS as a little Halloween Treat.

Tiptoe through our shiny city (49082 words) by vaguely_concerned Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Campaign (Podcast), Star Wars - All Media Types Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Blue/Zero (Campaign Podcast), Aava Arek & Zero Characters: Zero (Campaign Podcast), Blue (Campaign Podcast) Additional Tags: Character Study, Getting Together, First Time, Mutual Pining, Implied background Aava/Tryst, Star Wars: Return of the jester, Canon-Typical Comedic Awfulness, Tenderness
Summary: There’s a moment where Zero’s lust-hazy brain processes that, and once it does he lapses helplessly into laughter. He cups Blue’s pointy, freckled little face between his hands, overcome once more by the inexplicable need to just hold — the urge to gather him in and cradle him close enough to his own body that nothing in the world could ever hurt him. It seems something right between a miracle and a catastrophe, having something in the galaxy that is this dear to him. It’s not the first time by far he’s had to contemplate the sheer enormity of the things he would do for Blue’s complete lack of an ass, but he’s never felt the sureness of it quite so pressingly. Blue and Zero over the years, through the night after the Gala and beyond.

Scratch
Tumblr media
“I don’t make it a habit to talk about my clients’ business. I am known for my strict adherence to confidentiality. If you would like to be part of the fun, I’ll need your signature.”
Stats: tiefling lore bard lvl 8 ████████ ████ ████████ ███ █ AC: 11, HP: 33, Init: +2 Str: 9 (-1), Dex: 13 (+1), Con: 10 (0), Int: 16 (+3), Wis: 16 (+3), Cha: 20 (+5)
Story: Scratch is a sakah (”touched one”) born to a Carrion Tribe in the Demon Wastes. He left the barbaric, nomadic life of the tribe for scholarly study in the mythic city, Ashtakala. He fell in love with another tiefling there, and they married. She ran away to Sharn after theft allegations. Scratch followed her, and spent the next year looking for her in the big city, busking for spare change, living in the lower wards, and joining the private bard collective, The Circle of Song. When he found his wife a minor celebrity and married to a Phiarlan man, he took her to court. The divorce proceedings caught the attention of the Baroness of Phiarlan. When the striking underdog won the case, the Baroness took notice and hired them to her staff.  A grain of sand from Ashtakala lingers in Scratch, giving them a bit of soul magic, able to bind people to secrecy with their name and consent. After some years working for the Baroness, he was recommended around the high status of Breland. They have worked contract law with Sivis, patent law with Cannith, and trade contracts with Orien. They are the personal legal council of Alden d’Orien, though their loyalty still lies with the Baroness. They remain on retainer for her as council and a confidant. They are now affectionately (or rather derogatorily) referred to as “the devil lawyer of Sharn.”
When Alden’s son gets kidnapped by the Daask and the party gets involved to help, Scratch gets roped in to the shenanigans. As things escalate and the Patron (a mysterious entity) becomes a through-line, the Baroness asks him to investigate further. As Scratch learns more, they fall in too deep and the Patron makes themself known to him. Now, he has formed a new sort of contract.
“You are just a gnat crawling closer to the center of the spider’s web. Struggle, little gnat. You’ll only become more entangled.” -The Patron

Hiiii, yes I am still kind of around!!! Here are some vestiges I designed for my players!
It's a glaive for a conquest paladin/warlock, a spear for a gloomstalker ranger, a ring for a swashbuckler rogue/bard and an amulet for a cleric of undeath... yeah its sort of a borderline evil campaign! (But I have even worse plans for my players. I can make their characters either better or worse)

D&D/TTRPG campaign concepts
want to narrow down what kind of campaign you and your players would like to play? try showing your players this list (or a curated version of it) and having them choose their top favourite concepts! alternatively, you can simply roll!
typical fantasy
dungeon crawl
hex crawl
curses
political intrigue
patrons
gothic
sandbox
seasonal
sailing/ocean
flying/sky
gambling
tailored to an all-1-class party
tailored to an all-1-background party
tailored to an all-1-alignment party
interplanar
post-apocalypse
collecting
blighted world
arena
take stock of the most popular options. how can you mix and match them, and do you want to? negotiate with the players, asking what (if anything) they refuse to play.
some examples of possible mixing and matching include:
sailing/ocean + blighted world = a world where only the ocean is safe from a corruption that plagues the land.
curses + all-1-class party = a party of druids has been cursed to lose control of their wildshape abilities, and must either live with it or try to find a way to reverse the spell.
dungeon crawl + interplanar = there's a portal the party needs to use, and they must go through numerous dungeons in different planes to find it.
gothic + patrons = the party has been hired by a vampire lord to perform various quests to further their nefarious plots. the party seems willing to play along... do they know?
gambling + arena = there's an artifact at the casino, and it's too heavily-guarded to steal. the party's best bet at making money locally is surviving the arena.
political intrigue + post-apocalypse = navigating the politics and wars of desperate nations in a time of great scarcity.

*gasp* Travelling companions: a follower of Khitim, and a follower of Iletal.
A follower of Khitim says, "I will survive, no matter what I must endure, what I must suffer, what atrocities I must commit."
A follower of Iletal says, "You will survive, no matter what you must endure, what you must suffer, what atrocities are committed upon you."
Probably they met when the follower of Iletal saved the follower of Khitim's life, and now the two are travelling together until it's in the better interest of Khitim's follower to abandon them. Maybe they're both seeking the same source of rare medicine?
I have been thinking about things like that, though mostly in terms of how Khitim and Iletal themselves react to each other (complicated by the fact that Khitim and Nalashtar are friends, and Nalashtar very much hates him). But yes. That would be an interesting companionship, and one very likely to end with the follower of Iletal dead if they're not careful (Khitimites tend to react to little things like 'letting you be tortured for funsies and religious devotion' with 'I'm gonna survive this and then I'm going to murder your ass'). But a Khitimite might well be one of the few who'd deal fairly well with a servant of Iletal on a purely pragmatic basis, in the sense of 'we both want me alive, and I can work with that towards other shared goals'. So long as nobody makes any ill-advised moves, it could end reasonably well, at least for them, if not necessarily anyone around them. Heh.

yet another new character, for an evil campaign run by @locoszabo - shadar-kai lawful evil oath of vengeance paladin Arten Ona, aka the Bone Shepherd, or just Shepherd, to her friends. zealous devotee of the Raven Queen and all around murder machine.
ancient and haunted with a severely skewed moral compass after living for centuries as the sole protector of a lost elven necropolis, she’s nonetheless got a soft spot for other lost and lonely creatures (like her fellow party members) and will happily cleave any one who looks at them the wrong way in twain.

Evil DnD Doodles
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some more D&D drawings! Today I bring you our 4e evil campaign! Hands down one of my favorites where my tiefling warlock was able to curse two warring armies and use their deaths to power a final blast of darkness that hit the main bad guy for 1,700+ d6's. We all had to roll to make sure I didn't just nuke the entire party off the map and hey! I only wound up killing the pixie. (Well, and the bad guy. I reduced that demon into nothing but ash... and everything around us for miles... Good times!)
The first drawing is Zenobia, the aforementioned tiefling and her personal murderer/bodyguard, the thri kreen Tah'Koh. (My friends think it's funny to name these things after food...)
Tumblr media
This is the beautiful Rekah the dryad, and Ophelia the drug-addicted pixie.
Tumblr media
My husband's red dragonborn sorcerer, Zarrok and my friend's blue dragonborn: the lady! The DIVA! Miss Jorjor Gabor (or Jormun'gandr). He dressed in drag once and decided to do it for the rest of the campaign despite being REALLY bad at it.

Hello you talented and wonderful blogger! I'm rolling through Way of the Wicked with friends, and as DM I've run in to a bit of an issue. It's mostly because we have all played PF1e for so long and the game resources and combos are bananas now. But anyway, we have reached book 3. They recruited the medusa. She's broken. She turned 2 dozen horses and knights to stone in seconds. She was Dim-Door'd to the archers and stoned all 30 in 3 rounds. She's unstoppable. Help?
Are you using mine or are you using the one from the book? If it's mine, definitely sorry if I broke your game with my build that I changed for my group.
If it's the one from the book, then there are a few different ways to beat her.
It feels weird that so many were stoned in so few seconds. Remember that you can have the NPCs avert their gaze for a 50/50 chance of avoiding the save, or they can close their eyes altogether. Also, given the range is only 30 feet, how fast is she moving to get that many NPCs in the effect? Be mindful of range.
Izevel the Accursed has a DC 18 gaze attack. That's not nothing. However, you can add Blind-Fight to all the guards.
The clay golems are commanded to attack the medusa. They are immune to her gaze.
There are NPCs with rogue levels and took the dark lurker archetype (at least up to level 2).
Add a new NPC. Someone that's essentially Daredevil (or Fujitora from One Piece). Have it be an older guard who was sent to this outpost because he's an old friend of king and this area was supposed to be a peaceful retirement. Race of your choice, but give the NPC the Blind Zeal trait (Gary's added enough NPCs with traits already). Take either the Unarmed Fighter fighter archetype or the Master of Many Styles monk archetype. Take the Blinded Blade Style feat tree and Pummeling Style feat tree.
Change Captain Fidelis to a fighter and give him the Blind-Fight feat tree. Or, he could have the blind man's fold from Ultimate Equipment.
There's a new recruit. That NPC is a mesmerist with the Gaze Reflection feat.
The shield archons immediately attack. A fiendish medusa is on the battlefield petrifying everyone? They're immediately going after her. They will buff themselves and then pounce. They're completely immune to her gaze attack.
Give Captain Fidelis a vice-captain with a shield that has the assiduous property, making that NPC immune to gaze attacks. Or, same idea, but give Captain Fidelis, who has a greatsword, a +1 animated wood heavy shield with that property. It circles around him for a shield bonus, but can still use the greatsword without issue.
Give Sir Giles of Tell a veil of fleeting glances.
Give NPCs the Equipment Trick feat and take "mirror" or "shield". They can use it for reflecting gaze attacks as an immediate action (requires Combat Reflexes) or improved their defenses against the gaze (Perception 5 ranks). A few people do have the Combat Reflexes feat already, but it's mainly the monks who can't use shields. However, lots of people have Perception ranks so that should work. The "heavy blade scabbard" trick also technically works, as your opponent is "invisible" if your eyes are closed, so if the character has Blind-Fight then this also works.
Add the mirrored property to someone's armor or shield. Sir Dallidan the Bold, with his brightly crimson tabard and personal crest feels like the kind of person who'd have that.
Give someone or a lot of someone's, the Weapon Trick feat and go shielded view.
Someone has the glarecutter goggles.
There are dozens of creatures with gaze attacks, and one of them could come and attack the place at any time. The complex has a massive supply of smoked goggles (from Advanced Player's Guide; costs only 10 gp) and practically everyone has a set just in case. The -4 penalty to Perception isn't great, but that +8 to saves vs. visual is amazing.
The named NPCs each have an eversmoking bottle that's used as a signal to others that there are enemy attacks. That can be used to obscure the gaze.
Add more levels to the dwarves and give them Improved Stonecunning and Stone Sense (both in APG). This will give them tremorsense 10 feet. Not great against ranged attacks, but they're all melee anyway.
One of the treasures that Brother Nicodemus has access to in the Serene Order is the amulet of proof against petrification.
The dwarven priestess has two scrolls of Summon Monster IV and calls for hound archons. Possibly even to aid the shield archons. They'll only stick around for 7 rounds, but it's something.
Adding to what I said in point 14, there are many creatures with gaze attacks, and some even petrify. A few even bite and cause petrification, and they’re a low CR that any mook could fun into. As such, there’s probably a small supply of stone salve laying about. Those who are able to sneak around can take the salve and use it on those who have been petrified.
3.5e had a magic crystal in Magic Item Compendium (crystal of bent sight) that cost 500 gp. When attached to shields, it allowed the wielder to avoid gaze attacks without having to worry about the miss chance. A lesser mundane version could attached to helmets that give a static +2 or even +5. This way not everyone has to wear a shield. This could stack potentially with the smoked goggles.
There could be those with one time use items (wondrous or scrolls) that cast fog cloud or obscuring mist. That would also stop gaze attacks. Could even be lesser versions that only affect a 5-foot area.
Beyond that, two more magic items that can help against gaze attacks are the medusa mask and the kohl of uncanny discernment. Not sure how you'd fit those in, but the medusa mask could be a vigilante style mask for a ranger, slayer, or inquisitor who has been looking for Izevel.
Hopefully these will give you enough ammo to take that medusa down, or at least stall her so that others can come in and attack from range, as well as challenge the PCs and the rest of their minions.
EDIT: Added a few more.

He was born only 6 months before the Mourning, and assumes his parents died in the tragedy. He was left on the steps of the Cragwar Asylum with a journal that said “Merry” in lovely cursive, and “for Cainan” in scratched writing, clearly not from the author. Practically as soon as he could read, he noticed the journal had codes hidden in its entries and scientific notes. He has been deciphering it since. At the Cragwar Asylum, he got into trouble with his experiments. These include, but are not limited to killing a litter of puppies in an effort to feed them dehydrated food, and causing a cave in when trying to speed up a mining job the orphaned youth were forced to do.
Because of all this, Cainan’s supplies were confiscated and he took matters into his own hands. He became a thief to gather materials again. One such merchant he stole from was a man in his 50s, Diogenes, who traveled through Cragwar regularly. Cainan was caught, but instead of turning him in, Diogenes saw his talents and offered to take him in as his ward. For the last few years, Cainan has been living in Black Pit, experimenting and scavenging, performing fetch quests for his master, and decoding the mysterious Cannith journal, written over a hundred years ago.
When the party converges on Black Pit, they rope the boy into their job. Cainan rejects the Patron’s offer for power. While the idea of working with a bunch of flagrant killers is frightening at first, their acceptance and even admiration of his chaotic and destructive brilliance keeps him on the hook. Plus, it is kinda fun...
“You think you are so much smarter than the rest of them for rejecting my offer. Don’t worry. I’m confident you’ll come to me in your most desperate moment. Shouldn’t be long now.” - The Patron

For now, Juhani is as real as anything in her life.

(It’s been almost a year since I last posted anything for my Bluebird-crew-raises-a-child AU, but it’s back! The Mynock crew finally makes an appearance. <3)
