With every deep breath you take, you feel it. You know. With every slight shift, you feel it. You know. That being said, you probably won’t catch the same amount of flack as he will considering how everyone knows how much he likes to rope you into his stupid ideas and incredulous behavior.

Still, it gets you wondering about things. About just how things would go if someone were to find out that you’re in this room not to help with the case but to be some wet, messy whore for the world’s greatest detective while he’s busy at work. In a room full of people. In a room full of strangers. Who have shown you nothing but kindness and bravery and respect since you’ve met them.

It makes you wonder. And it makes you swallow nervously. Breathe heavily. Adjust your clothes ever so slightly. But worst of all? It makes you squeeze around it. Around him. Just like a wet, messy whore would. In a way that only brings little jolts- little moments of pleasure from all that happening beneath your skirt. It’s too risky to go any further. But you wonder if L knows that. You wonder if L even cares about that. You wonder. You wonder…

But something is blocking that awful feeling from you having to open your mouth. It’s the same awful feeling that keeps you rooted to L’s lap and very, very quiet while he takes care of business. The same awful feeling that tells you to do the dirtiest of things like opening your legs a little wider or arching your back a little bit more. “Ryuzaki, is something wron-”

So you get the same amount of pleasure from him as he gets from you.

“Everything is fine, ” L answers for you, not even bothering to look back at Matsuda as he addresses him. Instead, you can feel L’s gaze on the side of your face. Death Note characters ranked on how good they are at driving, from worst to best:

Near: I'm sorry, but he's not reaching the pedals. Like, if you could strap his brain to a car and make him psychically drive it, he'd do better than most people on this list. But in a regular car he'd unfortunately struggle. Maybe he can control the gas/brake while Rester steers, or vice-versa.

Matsuda: I just know that he gets distracted by every little thing. Funny road sign? New song on the radio? Discussing murder notebooks with his passengers? He suddenly forgets that he's in the middle of changing lanes.

Ide: Better than Matsuda because at least he keeps his damn hands on the steering wheel. He's considerably worse if Matsuda and/or Aizawa are bickering in the car with him, though.

Misa: Her placement can be shifted up/down a few spaces depending on your definition of "good". She will get you to your destination 10 minutes earlier than you expect, but multiple traffic laws will be broken on the way.

L: Look, I know he piloted a helicopter in canon without a license, but the sky doesn't have lanes or traffic lights. He can figure out how to drive the vehicle, sure, but his driving is chaotic and only marginally better than Misa's overall.

Light: Like L, he probably doesn't have a license and could work his way around a car. Unlike L, he wants to look like the perfect law-abiding citizen and will try his best to drive like one. He ends up going a bit under the speed limit because of this. L finds his behavior highly suspicious.

Aizawa: Completely average driver, other than the occasional bout of road-rage. Or Matsuda-rage, if a certain idiot is messing with the AC again.

Mogi: Also completely average, but goes completely silent while driving (except when working as Misa's manager). Is he focusing on the road, or does he just not feel like talking? Nobody knows.

Mello: Prefers motorcycles, but is shockingly capable at driving a wide variety of vehicles just fine. He'll even obey the law if he isn't actively committing a crime in said vehicle.

Soichiro: We saw him smash that car into Sakura. Dude managed to make that look cool as hell. When not breaking and entering TV studios, though, he's probably very good at going the speed limit and following traffic laws and all that boring stuff (he is a cop, after all).

Matt: Roughly half of his experience driving is from Mario Kart and GTA, but he can still somehow Tokyo Drift IRL. Theoretically, these could be points against him (see L's placement), but he's so bafflingly good that Rule of Cool makes him the best by default. My point is that he could drive normal, but where's the fun in that?!

All the people who say if Death Note took place today Light would be financially ruined by Genshin/Gacha games/similar things are wrong. If Death Note took place today he'd be obsessed with competitive Microsoft Excel.

He'd treat it with the same seriousness as the tennis match and his murder spree, and he'd be ridiculously good at it. Regional champion at least, but possibly one of the best in the world. Except...there is one detective who never sleeps and is incredibly fast on a keyboard...his arch enemy, the one person who could defeat him.

The Kira case happens the same as in canon except any time they have to analyze a large amount of data on the killings or cross reference anything, it's the most competitive, psychosexual, spreadsheet-making known to man. They have to do monologues and show montages of the sheets because Light and L are so extra about it it's unavoidable.

From the perspective of the rest of the task force, they just make lovely spreadsheets really fast and it's convenient and takes a lot of work off of Matsuda's shoulders, at least. They have no idea about the battles waged over formulas and color coding, how quickly the data can be entered, and how streamlined the use.

i think the most heartbreaking part of danganronpa, the more years pass and the longer i analyze it, is the revelation that junko loved her classmates. it's subtle, more subtle than a lot of writing in the series, and can easily be overlooked thanks to the narrative seeming to be allergic to showing junko interacting with her own cohort for some godforsaken reason, but it IS there.

we all know by now that the stronger junko feels about someone (positively) the more intimate she becomes in personally crafting despair for them to fall into. and while it would be easy for me to point to DR:S where she straight up admits that (in a non-despair timeline) she's attached to her classmates and that hope gives her despair, i'll instead dabble in that more subtle writing.

now i've spent far too many words far too many years ago talking about how much i Do Not Like DR3 (the anime) and especially do not like the despair video nonsense...but taking the above into account, it almost begins to make sense (almost). junko loves her classmates. adores them. i don't think it's coincidence that just their class were spared the initial slaughter, and i think that junko deciding to personally involve herself in their killing game with her own life on thebline as collateral shows that love.

she wanted her classmates to be personally cradled by her despair. televising their downfall in particular, kidnapping their loved ones - even killing off mukuro way early (and therefore "junko" as an entity in their minds) - all while isolating herself in the control room, trapped along with them...it's a commitment she doesn't show to anyone else except matsuda, her childhood love. the 77th class are throwaways - she involves herself with them only as much as needed to get what she needed before tossing them a brainwashing video and bouncing. they are barely anything to her, useful pawns at best and nothing more.

but her own class? she loves them. in UTDP and DR:S, her classmates are able to clock when her personality shifts even the slightest. she mildly entertains helping them, listening to their problems, giving them advice. she says sakura relying on her makes her feel happy - so happy it brings her despair. their happiness together is /genuine/, and it's why she wants to give them such a horrible, personal, awful gift.

idk, im just obsessed with these relationships that go so unsaid and are paid so little attention to. and i get some of it is to probably keep the mystique surrounding junko, but...sighs. the 78th class needs a little more love from the writers and they're never going to get it lmao, i just wish we saw more of the entire class and their relationship to junko.

What do you think of the theory that Near won by using the DN?

Well, the thing is, that's explicitly brought up as a theory in-universe by Matsuda in the manga after the warehouse event. It's a 'theory' yes, but when it's put on the table like that within the story itself, it's given even more credence than I would have if it was just a fan.

As it is, what we know is this:

We know in the aftermath that Near was able to obtain the true notebook and switch it for a fake when they caught Mikami murdering Takeda in a moment that deviated from his very strict ridiculous schedule. Near then has the notebook for a fair amount of time before the warehouse event takes place.

Mikami then showed up at the warehouse, with Light not surprised by this turn of events, where he wrote all the names in the fake Death Note. Light then gloats to Near, confessing he's Kira, and then "oh fuck" turns out that was a fake notebook which, as Light just confessed and his name is the only one not in that notebook, it's a bad look. Light then tries to write names in his watch and is either shot to death right there by Matsuda or gets to limp along in agony out of the warehouse until he dies on some stairs.

Mikami in the anime either stabs himself with a pen right then and there or else "mysteriously dies in prison ten days later".

The theory Matsuda presents is that, given the strange timing of Mikami's death (as a user can only be controlled for so many days, he was young and healthy and not at risk for sudden inexplicable deaths) as well as the fact that Mikami did exactly what Near needed him to do (arrived at the exact right moment, wrote down all the names except for Light's, did not intervene when the confrontation occurred and appeared to then 'denounce' Light for getting caught) it looks a lot like Near wrote an entry for Mikami such that Near was more likely to get a conviction out of Light.

As for where I lean...

Yeah, I agree with Matsuda.

Near idolizes L and models himself after him, and L certainly wasn't one to spare lives for his goals, and more Near had personal investment in this case due to L's death as well as Mello's. Near had to be victorious and here he had something that would stack the odds in his favor. If Near lost here, that would be it, there would be no one from the original case or no one who even knew to suspect Light.

Just as this was Light's opportunity to rid himself of Near, it was Near's only real chance to catch Light.

What clinches it for me is Mikami's sudden and unexpected death in prison within the expected timeframe. It's possible Mikami was poisoned to prevent him going to trial, it's possible he simply died, but the fact that he did die so mysteriously and it falls in the time frame and everything Mikami did was something Near needed...

Looking pretty suspect there.

And again, the fact that this is brought up by the characters themselves, while it doesn't make it true it does mean the authors are saying "hey, pay attention to this, this ambiguity is very intentional"

My Lawlight headcanons because I'm bored:

- Their relationship started out mostly physical (enemies/friends with benefits).

- Light caught feelings first, but was in denial until like halfway through the Yotsuba arc

- EVERYONE (except Soichiro) in the Task Force knew that something was happening between Light and L.

- Matsuda ships it.

- Mello also ships it.

- Near and Mello both figured out that Light and L were in love. Near wore a mask of L for this specific reason.

- They insult each other all the time (it's their love language).

- No, but seriously, Kira!Light's love language is Quality Time, Yotsuba!Light's love language is Acts of Service, and L's is Words of Affirmation.

- They talked a lot about just... random shit while Light was in confinement. This was when L caught feelings.

- They'll give each other logic puzzles when the other is bored. (This has led to multiple arguements where one is insistent that the answer they gave is actually right)

- Yotsuba!Light would brush out L's hair whenever either of them was stressed out. This was the best state L's hair had ever been in.

Now the sad ones:

- Light's reaction to L's death wasn't as much of a lie as he'd like to think.

- L's last words were going to be "But I love you" (How original, I know)

- Light had recurrent dreams about L. These turned to nightmares after L died.

- Part of Light was hoping that Near was actually L when they first got into contact.

- Light's last thought as he was dying was "Will I get to see L again?"

I made a post about this months ago but I think a lot of what I said there was really dumb bc it had been a while since I'd played either series so I'm gonna take this opportunity to correct my past self's wrong and bad opinions:

(Oh also I uh. May have included a few Death Note spoilers in the last paragraph of Phoenix's part sorry. I needed it to prove a point)

Hershel:

Definitely like no question. I originally said no on the basis that he isn't the type to take supernatural things at face value, but in reality he does seem to approach even the weirder cases with an open mind. Most games start with Luke being like "Professa do you really think there could be a notebook that kills people? :o" and Layton answering like "haha I'm afraid I can't really say Luke =|:-)" so I think he'd examine everything from every angle and eliminate every other possibility. He would take his sweet time since getting him to accept the Death Note as a real thing wouldn't exactly be easy, but once he's convinced then the rest would come naturally.

The other question is if he could survive, though. Obviously he would have the tact to hide his real name based on the possibility of Kira's power being real, especially if he's with Luke (which I don't even know if he would bring Luke along for this one considering how dangerous investigating Kira is). He does tend to appear a lot on british newspapers but since Light is in Japan then he wouldn't know about him beforehand. Regardless, Light has found out the names of his pursuers before and if he had Misa with him he could just ask her to write his name down. BUT ALSO. Layton has a tendency to not show his hand until the most convenient time, so odds are that Light won't even know he's pursuing him until it's too late.

Verdict: yeah he'll do great put him in the Task Force 👍

Phoenix:

It highly depends on the circumstances. Phoenix catches killers in court, so we're assuming someone already got falsely accused of being Kira. Light has a lot of followers who would gladly take the fall for him (namely Misa or Mikami) or alternatively lie their asses off to let him walk free. Everyone who's played Ace Attorney knows that you can't really lie to Phoenix without getting exposed though, so yeah.

Regarding the Death Note mechanics... honestly Phoenix works with a spirit medium channeling his dead teacher all the time so I don't see how he would have such a hard time believing shinigami with murder notebooks exist. (Edgeworth would be a completely different story but that's another case altogether.)

Problem is: he wouldn't so much as step into the court before suffering a heart attack. Not only does he not get a chance to hide his name thanks to court proceedings, but Phoenix is a pretty prestigious lawyer and even if he was only locally famous like Layton it wouldn't take long in the trial for Light to realize that this guy is bad news for him. Best case scenario he would try to debate away the accusations thrown at him, then when he realizes he's getting his ass kicked he'd desperately try to write Phoenix's name in that little slip of notebook he has in his watch. That's what he tried with Near, except this time he has the chance to hide what he's doing behind the witness stand and no Matsuda to stop him in his tracks.

Verdict: He could catch him but he would die in the process 💔
