Siblings Never Get Along
Tumblr media
[I hate you guys 😭😭😭 WHY THEMMMM] Summary: Azula and Zuko had never gotten along, especially when they share the same interest in certain Firebender.
Zuko loved you longer than Azula
Azula first gained a crush on you because of her jealousy
^ Zuko had something she didn't. Something that she wanted so bad, but didn't have
She would steal your attention away from her brother and threaten you if you didn't come with her
With all the time you spend with her [By force], she does begin to gain real, true feelings
She gets jealous of even her own friends
Now Zuko, he knows there's real competition because he's the nicest to you, and he knows you'll run into his arms soon enough
But he does get impatient
Just like Azula, he has temperamental issues and can only wait for so long
You have to make the choice
And no matter who you choose, it's going to end badly for you
If you choose Azula, Zuko will get angry and when they fight for Firelord and he ultimately wins and Azula get put away, he has you choose yet again and when you choose her, he won't allow it
Now say you do choose Zuko, Azula will slowly lose her sanity and just fall apart and you'll feel so bad, because you grew up with her, that you end up leaving Zuko, but it's already too late, Azula is already gone
Now say you try and choose neither or them or someone else, they'll end up working together, which is the worst option for you, because they would go back to the beginning and constantly bicker and fight for your attention, even though you're being kept in cage and have no where else to go
It really is all your fault, because you did have choices, you just choose wrong
[But you never had a REAL choice, did you?]

Imagine Azula having a crush on you and everyone but you knowing it
Tumblr media
You walked into the dining room to hear Ty Lee and Mai talking. Ty lee seemed to be worried about something and Mai nodded along. "Just invite y/n too and she'll be in a good mood" Mai replied and your ear perked up "invite y/n where now?". Mai and Ty lee jumped vividly. "Y/n" Ty lee said shooting you a smile "good morning how are you?". You smiled "morning, i’m good how are you?". "Really great" Ty Lee smiled and you nodded "so this thing you're inviting me to?". Ty lee nodded "yeah so basically the Kyoshi Warriors need some fire benders to help with the winter preparations and I was wondering if you and Azula could spare half an hour or so?". You nodded "of course! I'm seeing her after this for training so I’ll ask her then. What time do you need us for?". "Erm this evening if it’s okay?" Ty lee asked and you nodded "sure!". You tucked into your breakfast missing the sly smirk Mai shot Ty lee.
You asked Azula and she agreed to help so together you made your way to the foundations below the palace where the heating system lay. Ty Lee and Suki were waiting for you. “Thanks for coming” Suki smiled “we’ve got a few firebenders but the two of you will definitely be a strong force”. “Of course, Y/n and Azula have always been an excellent duo” Ty lee grinned and Azula made a noise. You didn’t notice and simply smiled back at Ty lee “of course we do, that’s why we’re best friends” and you shot Azula a fond look. Azula smiled back at you but you noticed she seemed nervous. You made a mental note to ask her about that later when you were alone and turned to Suki “now, where do you want us?”.
Azula’s POV
Once you’d helped balance the heating system Azula excused herself hoping to avoid any further teasing from Ty lee. Suki accompanied her back up to the palace but apparently the warrior had caught onto Ty lee’s teasing. “I have to admit I was surprised you could make it tonight” Suki told her “I figured your schedule would be far too busy to spare even half an hour”. Azula nodded “it is, I had to push several things around just to be here. Hence why I’m rushing away now”. Suki nodded “I guess you must really care a lot about Ty Lee and y/n”. The warrior stressed your name and Azula tensed. “Of course” Azula nodded “now excuse me i’m going this way” and she left the warrior. Azula could’ve sworn she heard the sound of chuckling and it took all her willpower to prevent a blush creeping up her neck. She’d be having stern words with Ty lee, that was for sure.
Your POV
To celebrate winter a ball was thrown every year and the annual event was fast approaching. When you questioned Ty lee on what she planned on wearing she admitted she wasn’t sure. You could always tell when there was something Ty lee was leaving out so encouraged her and she admitted there was something she’d like to try. The Kyoshi Warriors were all very close and apparently they regularly went shopping together and had chosen their outfits for the ball as a group. Ty lee liked how fun the group fashion shopping-spree sounded and confessed she wished she could do that with her friends but Mai and Azula hated shopping with a passion. You frowned recognising her predicament but you didn’t see why they both couldn’t do this one thing for Ty lee. She was always there when Azula needed her and you’d lost count of the number of times she’s skipped social events for Mai. So you agreed to talk to them both, determined to make Ty lee’s wish come true.
You had dinner as a group often and the next time it happened you decided to broach the subject. Ty lee left early for her guard duty and you figured it was the perfect time. You set down your cutlery and breathed “So...I have something to ask you both. It’s a thing Ty lee would like us to try”. "What thing?" Azula asked immediately and you smiled nervously. "Hear me out before you dismiss the idea. She wants is to go shopping and choose outfits for the ball together". Mai groaned instinctively "eugh but shopping is the worst! Especially in groups". Azula nodded "that is true, what is even the need? We’re all capable of selecting clothing". “The idea is to have some fun together” you smiled undeterred “we can pick out outfits for each other and give advice and encouragement. We can make a whole day of it and anyway it will make Ty lee so happy! Isn’t that enough". "No" Mai replied and you sighed "what about you Azula? What do you think?". Mai saw Azula’s conflicted expression and began to worry. You stared at Azula with wide pleading eyes and Mai could feel her ally slipping with every second. Azula eventually sighed "fine...I guess this once couldn't hurt". You squealed and wrapped yourself around Azula. "Thank you you’re the greatest" you cried pecking her cheek "sorry Mai but 3 against 1 we’re going! I'll go find Ty lee" and you rushed away.
Azula’s POV
"Traitor" Mai hissed the second you’d left and Azula blushed. "I'm no such thing. I just agree this will be a nice thing for Ty lee". "Sure you did this for Ty lee" Mai said and Azula blushed "whatever perverted thought you have about y/n...". "I never mentioned y/n" Mai smiled and Azula blushed. "whatever" and she rushed from the dining room.
So the four of you found yourself in a boutique a few days before the ball. You and Ty lee were very enthusiastic and Azula watched as you had soon selected several outfits for each girl which you thought would suit them. However when it came to choosing an outfit for yourself you realised you hadn’t even thought about it. Standing there empty-handed Mai smirked at you. "Maybe this is why you should be less social" she teased and you smiled "I'll be fine I don’t care what I wear I'll just pick....this" you said grabbing the first dress you saw. Azula paused as she saw the chosen item. It was a stunning gold dress, she knew it would match your body type and skin colouring perfectly. "How do you just pick up a beautiful dress like that?" Azula asked and you smiled "magic hands, now let's try them on". You rushed to the changing room and the woman paused "I'm sorry we only have 2 private changing rooms available and there’s a time limit. We’re very busy with the ball just around the corner”. Azula glared "I knew I should’ve booked this whole place out". She felt her anger rising up inside her and was about to tell this woman exactly who she was when you placed a hand on her arm and all that fell away. You shot her a smile and stepped forwards "it’s okay we can just share them! Mai and Ty lee in one and me and you in another". The woman nodded "that would work”. Azula turned bright red "but share changing rooms...are we really that desperate". "You said you would do this" Ty lee whined and you frowned "it won’t be that bad Azula I promise". Azula sighed but gave in. Azula let you lead her into a changing room and froze when the door closed. You hung up your one dress and began pulling your coat off. Azula felt the heat rise to her cheeks and panicked. Did she walk out? Could she make covering her eyes seem casual or would that be too weird? Should she just act as normal? You chatted to her through all of this and Azula had no idea what to do. You began pulling your clothes over your head obliviously and then you got tangled. "I don’t think I undid all the buttons" you laughed "Azula can you help?". "Me?" Azula cried. She had her eyes glued to the floor and now you wanted her to look at you! "Who else?" you giggled "can you just help pull it over my head please?" you asked. Azula frowned and looked at you. "The dress is tangled on your necklace" she explained and you sighed "knew it! Can you loosen it?". Azula did so, pleased you couldn't see the huge blush on her face as she tried not to look at you. Finally your t-shirt came over your head and your face came into view. Your hair was all messy and your face was so close to hers. Azula thought you looked effortlessly beautiful and she hastened to look away. "Thanks" you grinned before turning to grab the dress you’d brought to try on. Azula turned away and gave you privacy. "Aren’t you trying anything on" you asked and Azula paused. She’d actually forgotten that was the whole point of this but the thought of undressing in front of you made her even more embarrassed so she shook her head. "No I just remembered I already have a dress I want to wear to the party anyway". "That’s good" you smiled "what does it look like?". "It’s nothing special" Azula tried brushing the subject away. "I'm sure that's not true" you replied instantly "can you zip me up?". Azula turned back around to see you’d gotten the dress on and it looked stunning. The gown hugged your body in a flattering fashion and it looked as if it had been tailored for you. You just looked great in everything apparently. Azula stared at you in shock before she realised you were watching her. "Azula?" you asked “a little help?” and she nodded "yes of course”. Azula brought her shaking hands to your zipper and pulled it up. "So how does it look?" you asked spinning around and Azula shook her head "you look so beautiful". You blushed and Azula did too "I mean the dress is beautiful and it really suits you". "Thanks Azula you’re so kind to me" you smiled hugging her. You let go far too soon for Azula’s liking and opened the door "Mai, Ty lee are you ready?”.
Once the other two girls appeared compliments and opinions were exchanged while Azula stood there awkwardly. It was decided Mai’s dress needed accessories and you disappeared back into the shop to find something for her. Ty lee and Mai chattered amongst themselves but Azula’s lack of outfit didn’t go unnoticed for long. "Azula where's your dress?" Ty lee asked and she shrugged "I decided to wear an old one". "So you just..went into the changing room with y/n for fun?" Mai asked with a smirk and Azula blushed. "No I helped her zip it up and I'm going to wait out here now anyway". The duo laughed and Azula was getting ready to shout at them when you returned with the wrap for Mai. “I’ve got it! What did I miss? Wait are you guys actually enjoying this?” you asked grinning. Ty lee nodded and Mai smiled devilishly “you know I hated it at first but now I’m getting into it. This is fun” she grinned shooting Azula a look and the princess groaned. This was going to be a long afternoon.
Finally the day of the ball arrived and Azula, of course was one of the first ones present. Azula watched the people enter the hall, mentally taking notes and putting names to faces.
About an hour into the party Azula began to wonder where you were. Most of the guests appeared to be here and the party was now in full swing but still there was no sign of you. Azula paced wondering what was keeping you.
You entered with Ty lee and that answered Azula’s question. The chi blocker was late to everything of course she'd held you up. Azula watched as you descended the staircase and felt her skin erupt in goosebumps. Whenever she saw you she just got lost for a few seconds and this time she let herself. She noticed how a piece of hair had slipped out of your bun but how if anything it framed your face wonderfully, making you look even more glamorous. She noticed how the bracelet you always wore on your arm jingled up and down as you spoke animated to Ty lee. She saw how your eyes sparkled with excitement as you surveyed the room. And then they landed on Azula herself. You smiled immediately in response to her and Azula felt a warm sensation sweep over her. The smile was all for her and she basked in it before turning away so as to not creep you out. "Y/n and Ty lee look good" Zuko commented and Azula nodded "they certainly do". “Although you probably think more so for the former”. Azula’s head snapped around rapidly. “Mai told you?” she hissed and her brother chuckled “yes but she didn’t have to. You’re very territorial, sister. Anyone comes near y/n and you’re ready to maim them in case they hurt her. You’ve all but declared her yours”. Azula rolled her eyes “you don’t know what you’re talking about and I’m hardly going to take dating advice from you. It took how many years before you acknowledged your feelings for Mai and even then she was the one who asked you out because you were too scared!”. Azula had meant to provoke her brother into storming away but he only smiled. “Try and change the topic all you want but it doesn’t change how smitten you are for y/n and speaking of...you should be careful Azula someones stealing your girlfriend" Zuko teased with a glint in his eye.
Azula immediately froze and spun around to find you in the centre of the dance floor with some boy. She narrowed her eyes and glared "what is that boy of yours doing here?". Zuko smiled "who Jet? I invited him to the party, if I remember right he's quite a smooth talker isn’t he Katara?". The water bender, who apparently had been rudely listening to the whole conversation, nodded smugly. "He is. Quite the ladies man". Azula narrowed her eyes and the pair exchanged a smile. "Well I don’t care" Azula said in a weak attempt to brush off their comments. She was quiet for three seconds before she burst "and y/n’s gay anyway so he’s wasting his time". Your laughter suddenly broke across the room and Zuko smirked "I’m sure you’re right”. Azula glared and Katara took pity "you know Azula if you just told y/n...". "Told her what! There’s nothing to tell!" she cried and Katara raised her hands in surrender. "Okay but if you did like y/n, then telling her would solve all your issues". "You don’t know anything about me" Azula snapped and stormed away.
Azua simmered on the edge of the dance floor, watching you laugh and smile while wishing the boy would trip over and hurt himself. She kept grabbing drinks from nearby trays for something to distract herself and was beginning to feel the effect of them. Azula drummed her finger against the empty cup and tried to deal with all the feelings swirling around in her head.
She felt annoyed that everyone she knew had been teasing her mercilessly for her crush. She felt anger at that boy for presuming to touch you and even slightly miffed at you for not telling him to back off. She felt anxious being in a social setting surrounded by so many people who were more extroverted and socially advanced than her. But mostly she just felt sad. She wanted you to look at her the way Zuko looked at Mai. She wanted you to hang off her arm and laugh at her quips. She wanted to be able to dance with you like that boy was and to be confident enough to tell you how she felt.
But she wasn’t and so she’d have to stick with the consequences.
Then suddenly, as if summoned by her thoughts, you stopped dancing and made your way directly towards her. Azula pretended to look busy but considering she was standing alone that was hard. She stared at the hem of her sleeve and pulled a stoic face when you appeared. “Hey” you smiled “how are you enjoying the ball?”. Azula snorted “as much as I always do”. You smiled “I thought you might say that so came here to shake you out of your slump”. “And how do you suppose to do that?” Azula asked. You just smiled. "I want you to dance with me"  you replied and Azula froze. "Me? But why?" she managed and you smiled hooking your arm through hers. “Because it will stop you stewing over your thoughts”.  Azula paused "but I...you know I've never been good at this why don’t go get Ty lee?". "Because I want to dance with you not Ty lee" you replied and Azula suppressed a shiver. "Okay" she nodded and you smiled. You wrapped her hands around your waist and placed yours around her neck. It was dangerous being this close to you. Azula had worked out being closer to you triggered her weakness more and this was as close as she’d ever been to you. To make it worse she couldn't avoid looking you in the eye either. She had to stare into those dazzling orbs and try not think about how beautiful they were. "You lied to me" you said suddenly and Azula froze "what do you mean?". "You told me you weren’t wearing anything special and you turn up in a dress like that?”. Azula blushed "you've seen this on me a thousand times". "So?" You asked "you look wonderful in it every single time. The red matches your hair and skin tone well and you know how much it brings out your eyes. Admit it you wear this dress on purpose" you teased and Azuka blushed. "I didn’t but seeing how good a reception it apparently receives" she replied and you smiled "every time". Azula couldn’t think of a reply so she looked away. She was aware the others were probably watching, laughing at her red cheeks but she tried not to think about it. All she had to do was get through these next few minutes and then she could calm down. When the song ended you knew Azula would want to stop so led her away from the dance floor. You asked Azula if she wanted a drink and she agreed so you headed to the bar. However you never arrived. On the way there you bumped into the avatar. You apparently knew him well and chatted when Sokka appeared. "Azula" he said nodding to her and Aang looked up confused. "Ow sorry Azula I didn’t see you there. Are the two of you enjoying your evening?" he asked. Azula nodded "so far it's been pleasant". Aang smiled "I’m glad to hear it and can I say the two of you make a lovely couple".  Azula flinched as the Avatar’s words sunk over her. Was this child really joining in with this whole teasing her for her crush thing? The subtle mischievous look on his face told Azula he was. You obliviously looked from Aang to Azula "ow we’re...we’re not a couple". "You’re not?" Sokka asked joining in with the act. "No" you said blushing slightly and Sokka hodded. "Huh...sorry I figured you two were...". "It’s fine" you smiled and Azula could feel her face burning. She couldn’t even speak she was so angry. Had Zuko put them up to this? Mai? Her thoughts swirled and she finally couldn’t cope. She stormed was angrily and exited the ballroom. She raced through the corridor and stormed towards her own wing. Once there she began attacking the practice dummy in her room trying to get all her pent up rage out.
She did not think she would be followed.   "Azula?" you asked knocking softly on the door before entering. Azula paused mid-punch. She was aware she’d probably ruined her makeup and looked a mess but she didn’t care. You stood frozen in the doorway "are you okay...Sokka and Aang didn’t mean anything by their comments". Azula sighed "it's fine I just need some time". You nodded but didn’t leave. "Was it that bad?" you suddenly asked in a small voice. Azula didn’t hesitate "yes". You shrunk away at that and looked down "okay...sorry I didn’t realise being mistaken for my girlfriend was so terrible" and you left. Azula immediately realised that was that you'd been asking and froze. "Y/n!" She yelled and chased you. You hadn't gone far but didn’t stop when she called out to you. "Y/n I didn’t mean that" she called "I meant being teased! Or course i didn’t mean you!". You stopped walking and eyed her wearily "are you sure?". Azula nodded "totally". "Then what made you so angry?". Azula sighed "I can’t tell you". "Why not?" You asked upset "if it’s about me then I deserve to know". "But it will ruin things between us" Azula explained and you frowned. "What could possibly ruin our relationship?". "Trust me this will" Azula replied and you stared back at her stubbornly "why don’t you trust me enough to believe that it won't?". Azula sighed "y/n...". "Azula please” you cried and she sighed "I like you! There are you happy". You froze "like me as in...". "In that way" Azula nodded and you went silent. "I..." you started but Azula cut you off "wait not here. Anyone could be listening. Can we go back to my room?". If she was going to be rejected she’d rather it be done in private. You nodded and followed her back into her room. Azula closed the door as you both entered and turned back around. "So I guess you might have questions?” she asked and you nodded. "Kind of...why did liking me make you so angry?". Azula shook her head "liking you didn’t...well not alone. It was more the principle, the fact people were using it to tease me and make jokes. It makes me feel humiliated and weak". You nodded "because you like me?". "Yes" Azula nodded "liking someone who doesn't like you back is always embarrassing or so i’ve heard". "But who says I don’t like you back?" you asked. Azula froze "what?". You smiled softly and walked closer "who says I don’t like you back?". Azula paused "I...just assumed". "Your brain is usually impeccable Azula but not this time...see if you’d have asked me out or even to this ball tonight I'd have said yes because I like you". "Romantically?" Azula asked and you chuckled "yes, was my flirting on the dance floor that bad?". Azula shook her head "no I noticed I just figured you didn’t mean it in the way I heard it". You nodded "i don’t know why it didn’t occur to me subtle flirts wouldn’t work...here let's try something more straightforward”. You came to stand right in front of her and your eyes softened "Princess Azula can I kiss you?". Azula nodded and you moved even closer your lips meeting hers. Azula got lost in the sensation from the start. She’d wanted this and you for so long it was surreal. She wanted to make to most of it and to experience every second of it. All she could feel was you and it intoxicating. She wasn’t even aware her hands were wandering when you suddenly pulled away. You were bright pink, excitement and something else clearly lingered in your eye but you also looked down bashfully. "I think maybe just a kiss for now?" you asked and Azula was horrified. "I...of course I'm so sorry I just got over-excited". You noticed Azula's worry and immediately reassured her she had done anything wrong. You gripped her hands and smiled reassuringly. "No I enjoyed it greatly just I'm kind of new to this so would like to take this slow. I want you too but I don’t want to rush into this. I want to savour it and you". Now Azula was the one blushing "I...that sounds..." Azula trailed off and you smiled "alright?". Azula nodded "of course! Better than alright that's why I trailed off...i like you a lot! If that was evident from that kiss..." Azula trailed off "anyway I'd love to date you". Azula cringed at her own words and you noticed smiling fondly at her. "I'd love to date you too" you smiled pecking her lips "how about tomorrow night we go to dinner?". Azula nodded "yes! I can have the restaurant cleared for us and the best chiefs brought in". You smiled "as much as I love the passion how about we just slip out of the palace and visit one in disguise? Then we could stroll around the park after and watch the sunset? I love your title but I don’t need anything special. Just you is perfect". Again Azula was lost for worse and she babbled before being able to speak "yes of course".
The two of you returned to the party hand in hand and of course your friends were like bloodhounds and appeared seconds later. Ty lee gasped so loudly half the room looked over and Mai’s eyes were wider than Azula had ever seen them. “You told her?” Sokka cried disappointed “we were just starting to have fun”. “Yeah...we never get to tease you about anything” Zuko pouted. As your friends all nodded along an idea came to you. "Wait you mean you all knew and have been teasing Azula this entire time?" you asked. Everyone paused and your eyes turned darker. "That is so horrible!" you cried "all of you! Ty lee? Mai?". The girls looked down and you looked to Zuko "Firelord? Even you?". Zuko babbled "we didn’t mean any harm by it" and you just swatted him. "Didn’t mean any harm by it! Remember that time I nudged you when Mai entered the room and you wouldn’t speak to me for a week! And now you did this to your little sister! And you" you said turning to Aang "you're the Avatar!". Azula smiled watching as you took on everyone in the room scolding them. A smug expression settled on her face and she laughed to herself. "My girlfriend is the greatest" she said quietly. The next morning  Azula woke up the following morning with a jolt. The night came flooding back to her but she wasn’t sure if her crush admitting she liked her back was a dream or real. She looked around her room for any hints but didn't find any. Snoring suddenly startled her and she jumped before spotting Ty Lee asleep on her sofa. The chi blocker was too tired to walk home so had crashed at Azula’s. Azula quickly rushed and woke her up "Ty lee get up I need to ask you something". Ty Lee groaned "Azula it's barely even light...". "Did y/n and me start dating last night?". Ty Lee opened her eyes "really? You can’t remember?". "No I can remember but I'm not sure If it was real, it seems like one of those things that was too good to be true. Did it really happen?". Ty Lee smiled "it did Azula, y/n likes you back". Warmth filled Azula and a smile worked its way onto her face without her even noticing. She sat back in bed and Ty lee giggled softly. "That is good news" she said awkwardly in reply. There were several things that Azula knew she should be worried about. The fact she’d never been on a date or to a real restaurant before were two big ones but in this moment none of that mattered. A smile worked its way onto Azula’s face and she basked in the moment. Her crush liked her back, nothing else mattered.

Thank You Zula
Short Imagine/Oneshot
"Oh come on. It's just a small scratch. Nothing bad. So stop acting like you're about to cry."
Azula rolled her eyes at you as you just hit your pinky toe when you walked past the wardrobe in her chambers. You were sitting on the ground holding on to the spot that hurt so much and trying your very best to not let tears get through.
"It hurts as if an earth bender smashed a rock on my toe! I bet it's broken..."
Again Azula rolled her eyes thinking you were exaggerating. But when she noticed the first tear slipping down your cheek she sighed and stepped forward, kneeling down in front you.
"Fine show me."
Sniffing you took of your socks and let her have a look at your pinky and it took her by surprise to see the ugly purple mark right where you hit it. She sighed.
"Well, I think we should get you to the healers just in case it's not broken. I'll take you but please, stop crying, yes? I don't want people to think I'm friends with a crybaby."
You looked at her, giving her a nod while biting your lip. It still hurt like hell but when Azula picked you up like it was nothing you were distracted anyway.
Your cheeks turned into a shade of pink as you looked at her face. She didn't look at you directly focusing on the path ahead. Carefully you held onto her neck leaning your head against her shoulder slightly.
Without thinking you placed a gentle kiss on her cheek.
"Thank you, Zula."

A/N: You all voted on this poll, and this poll, and this poll and after a LOT of voting (((again) again) again), we have this :) I’ll be honest though, I have mixed thoughts about this. Nova, I owe you my life for beta reading this ily girl (@that-multi-fandom-hijabi) Go follow her writing acc! (@novaaaaaa-writes) Here's my masterlist! Divider made by @cafekitsune
Warning(s): Enemies to lovers trope, mentions of blood, reader's a baddie, reader used to work for Azula, bad depictions of firebending, maybe some inaccuracies idk man, some people might be ooc idk 😅, thoughts about death (like once), lots of buildup, reader is a good cook, reader owns a restaurant, reader sets a table on fire, both of them are very attracted to each other lmao, reader refuses to fire bend, I kinda head cannoned, basically if a firebender doesn't firebend of a certain amount of time, the fire inside them builds up and can damage the wielder, like clogged pipe in a way, love at first sight (?), slowburn kinda, reader is GN but written with f!reader in mind.
Pairing: Sokka x Firebender!Reader
Tumblr media
It was safe to say, you were screwed. Traitor to the Fire Nation and all.
“Ugh…” you grit out, patting your side in discomfort, pulling your hand away to find sticky blood.
It was safe to say that Princess Azula wasn’t too happy to find out you didn’t approve of the current ideals of the Fire Nation. Alas, you were too far deep into her scheme to leave then, and you were now- but this time, you ran away.
You weren’t going to find the Avatar- joining him would only make things harder on yourself- especially since he and his friends most definitely hated you for all the stunts you pulled alongside the son and daughter of Firelord Ozai.
So you were left with two options. Sit in the dark and disgusting alleyway you were hiding in and bleed to death, or find somewhere to stay, patch yourself up, and bunker down with a new identity.
If there’s one thing the Fire Nation would underestimate about you- it was your will to live.
The journey to the Earth Kingdom was torturous, your aching feet would be screaming in overexertion, yet you pushed on. Solitude was your only solace, though the lack of social interaction guaranteed nothing would stop the onslaught of dark thoughts entering your mind, it was comforting to you that you were finally free to make your own decisions without anyone else influencing them.
You reached the gates of the Earth Kingdom battered and bruised- the month of so that you traveled for changed your appearance quite a bit- your hair slightly longer and the numerous different climates you had suffered through allowed your hair to settle into gentle waves. You got thinner, lack of food turning you into a near skeleton, but the muscles you had trained your whole life remained, and you were stronger than ever. Obviously, the guards didn’t recognize you, letting you pass without a hitch under a fake name.
You found a kind older woman in the outer ring of Ba Sing Se, who offered you take you in for the night.
There, you enjoyed a soothing bath and a good meal, and she was pleasant company. You slept on the couch that night, and left early the next morning, leaving a few gold coins as a subpar payment for her hospitality.
And then you were on your own again.
Days passed, and then months, you worked almost every job under the sun as you finally scrounged up enough money to open your own store.
It was a nice and quaint restaurant, and you worked your blood, sweat, and tears into it- and that was a statement, you rarely cried. Not anymore anyways- experiencing so much loss does that to people.
You called it the Unagi- your restaurant known for its excellent soups and eel rolls, both of which were comfort foods growing up. Even though you vowed to start a new life, and throw your old one behind, you kept this part of your old life with you. You stopped bending, not a single spark or flame left your fingertips after the day you left the Fire Nation.
Months passed, 7 to be exact, and you had built quite the reputation in Ba Sing Se- travelers from all over had some solely to try your food, and they were not disappointed. Your cooking prowess as a force to be reckoned with- and you enjoyed in immensely. For the first time in years, you were happy.
Of course, rush hour was the most overwhelming experience you had ever had to experience- as you refused to hire anyone to assist you run your shop- your trust had run thin, and you weren’t going to risk the product of your hard work to anyone. Eventually, you learned to keep all your ingredients preprepared- and then cook them in your soups and put them in your rolls the morning of each day, so that they were all fresh and it was less work for you. All your customers were understanding, and respected you for your time and work. People loved your story- a stranger and a traveler with basically next to nothing, and then turned your life around in just a few months.
After a few months, you practically knew all the gossip in the city- always overhearing the snippets of murmurs from your customers. Usually, you paid no mind to them, but today, what you heard stopped you in your tracks.
“Did you hear?”
“Yeah! The Avatar and his crew were spotted at the gates this morning!”
“Do you think Ba Sing Se is in trouble?!”
“I hope not, after what happened in the Northern Wa-”
You stopped listening after that, going back to the kitchen with the blood roaring in your ears. You stirred the soup you were making with a new intensity, as it your life depended on it. Dread pooled in your stomach- if the Avatar and his friends came around the Unagi, you were done for. The Avatar would recognize you, the only one to have seen you without the normal mask you wore- and the only one out of the group you had met.
You sighed, deciding to ignore the fear you felt. Months of peace wore down your guard a little bit, and you were used to forcing your body into a state of ease after the first few weeks you had stayed in the city- nightmares plaguing you day and night. They were gone now, thankfully, but if the Avatar and his friends destroyed everything you worked so hard to maintain, you might break.
Fortunately, weeks went by without a hitch, no sign of the Avatar, and no sign of the Unagi being burnt down.
One day, on a relatively quiet day, you hear a few voices outside.
“Here Sokka, Toph, take some gold and treat yourself to some food, I hear this place is really good.” A female voice says, she sounded around 14-15 years old. “We’ll meet you back in the square- bring some for the rest of us.”
You don’t hear much of what the girl says afterwards, opting to resume taking orders. That’s when you lay your eyes on the boy in front of you. He had a wolf’s knot, something you knew to be common in the water tribe. He had the build of a warrior, toned muscles littered with scars that you knew weren't achieved easily. And his eyes, a brilliant shade of blue you thought you could get lost in, a pleasant contrast to the red of the Fire Nation you would be tied to for the rest of your life.
It takes you a few minutes to realize you were staring, and a few more to realize that he was too. You cough into your fist awkwardly and look away, realizing you had company.
The young girl next to him slams a few pieces of gold onto the counter, but you, unlike the boy across from you, didn’t flinch – you were used to it. “Whaddya got for us, lady?” she asks in a brash tone, but you weren’t intimidated, nor were you offended, but the boy you were staring at earlier still apologizes on her behalf.
You chuckle lightly, it amused you to see the energy in the two of them as you respond to the girl’s question. “The gold can get you some soup with some salmon, along with eel rolls, on the house.” you say, smiling lightly.
The boy’s eyes light up in excitement, though he seemed a little older than you, there was no mistaking that childish enthusiasm for a nice homecooked meal.
“Can I get your name?” You ask, grabbing your notepad and quill to write down the order.
“Sokka” he says, with a teasing sparkle in his eyes, and you can’t help but grin at his antics. It’s been a while since you felt like this. You, giddy over a crush? The feeling was a little foreign to you, but it wasn’t unwelcome.
“And you?” he asks, leaning slightly over the counter. You reciprocate his movements, telling him your name and telling him and his friend to take a seat.
Sokka and his friend, Toph, left shortly after, taking their soup to go and devouring their eel rolls. It was late now, you were sweeping up the floors, planning to leave and close the Unagi in an hour or so, before something unexpected happened.
You feel a sharp pain in your chest collapsing to the ground, your insides felt like they were burning, invisible flames eating away and you. Tears prick the corners of your eyes, mind raging and all you could see what red.
Why was this happening to you?
You felt your body flare up in pain, and all you wanted was for it to stop for it to go away.
“You will always be a part of the Fire Nation. “Azula had told you, with a manic look in her eye. “No matter how long you try to suppress it, your inner fire will never be satisfied. One day, your fire will turn against you, your body won’t be able to handle it anymore, no matter how strong you think you are. Let’s face it, you’re a monster, just like me.”
You didn’t hear the jingle of the door opening.
Letting out an anguished cry, you thrust out your arms, cerulean flames setting one of your tables on fire.
And staring at you, through the blue flames, were those sparkling eyes you loved so much. Staring at you with disgust and horror.
“Sokka, oh my god-” you say, in shock.
“Who are you.” he cuts in, his eyes sharp and cold.
“I-I swear, I’m not with the Fire Nation anymore, I-” You stutter, your throat closing in. You stumble back, staring at the flaming table with a horrified look in your eyes.
Sokka looks at you, unsure of what to do. You were the enemy, you were a firebender, one who could wield blue flames. Yet... he knew you were telling the truth. You were the same person who kindly gave them free food and didn’t turn them away even with Toph’s brashness.
He sighs, and looks around, before turning back to you. “C’mon, let’s go find my friends. My sister’s a waterbender, she’ll put out the fire for you.
You just stand there numb, your body still reeling from the aftershocks of feeling so much pain. You didn’t realize you were crying until Sokka walks up to you and wraps his arms around you, letting your tears soak into the fabric of his shirt. He strokes your hair lightly and holds you close. He smelled earthy, a musk that reminded you of the scent you smelled after it rained, all natural and grounding, soothing your worries.
“I’m here.” is all he says, and you stand like that, Sokka’s frame blocking the blue flames from your sight- a barrier between the life you live now, and the one you left behind.
BONUS:
After Sokka and you find Katara and the others, you put out the fire- Aang recognized you immediately, but Sokka vouched for you, saying that you didn’t ally with the Fire Nation anymore, and that you were trustworthy. And then, once you guide them to the back of the store, where your living quarters were, you and Sokka were alone again.
“Hey Sokka?” you ask, the boy in question looking at you with his full attention. “Why were you at my shop in the middle of the night?”
Sokka chuckles sheepishly and looks at you with that sparkle in his eyes. “I may or may not have been craving those eel rolls of yours.”
You snort, and you look at him with a teasing smile on your face. “You still hungry?”
It was safe to say neither of you got much sleep that night, up laughing and throwing rice grains at each other.

Azula's Gambit
pairing : Azula x Gender-Neutral Reader word count : 5k
warnings: angsty and feels. Summary : Princess Azula known for her cunning and control, finds herself inexplicably drawn to you, a figure who challenges her at every turn. You and Azula were bound by a complex game of emotion, mind games, power plays and manipulation. One day, you challenge Azula to break her facade; to see her vulnerable, with one question in mind: Are you just a game to her? Or are you something more? A/N : I really hope you enjoy this angsty, brainy, little fic of Azula. There will be part two of the ending (in which I still wrecked my head to write about 🥲)
---
In the center of the courtyard, Azula stood, a figure of fierce concentration. She took a deep breath before opening her eyes. She started off by twirling a flame on her fingertip, it zig-zag through her fingers effortlessly. With a flick of her wrist, that flame conjured a blazing inferno. The blue flame leaped, spiraled, and danced around her; each second is precise, each movement is organic, each turn with it’s whirl are calculated.
So far, so good. A smug smile playing on her lips. Now, It’s time to dance with the lightning.
As she extended her arm, her fingers splayed. She shifted her weight effortlessly, her feet gliding over the ground as if she were part of the wind itself. With a swift, circular motion of her hands, the lightning followed, spiraling around her in a mesmerizing display of control and power. She transitioned into a series of quick, explosive movements, a sharp turn of her body directed the lightning outward in an stunning arc. She finally point to a giant rock to blast all the lightning with, cracking it into two.
The courtyard erupted into spontaneous applause. Each clap full of admiration, awe and maybe a bit of fear: just how Azula liked it. As she stood amidst the blue flames, her chest swelling with pride, her head held a touch higher.
She scanned the crowd, searching for one face in particular, yours, hoping to catch a glimpse of your stupid amazed face. Her ‘fiery’ performance, as you repeatedly called it, was a spectacle to proof your dare. You had dare her to split the rock with only a finger, and she did just that.
As her eyes darted through the sea of mostly aged and ragged men faces, her heart sank slightly. You were nowhere to be seen. Instead, her eyes met her father’s. Their eyes locked, he stood, a stoic figure– his face betraying no emotion. He gave a subtle nod, it was terse, almost reluctant approval. But she knew almost it’s not good enough.
Finally, she had to maintained her composure, her face now a mask of indifference mirroring her father’s. With a graceful bow to the audience, she let the flames die down, taking her leave from there.
The performance had ended, and the courtyard was still buzzing with the leftovers of Azula’s fiery display. Azula had trained for this. Hours and hours that turned to days and days then it became to several weeks to months. But she felt nothing paid that hard work, those time were wasted. This performance was not a big deal, it was not a green light to be a Firelord either. Yet, she can’t help but failing.
Ty Lee rushed up to her, “Azula! There you are,”
Ty Lee already brimming her words of amazement with uncontainable energy, “The way you move the lightning and those dancing flames?! It was so amazing!” she exclaimed, her voice echoed the corridors.
Azula nodded in acknowledgment, “Naturally,” casually shrugging.
“You did well,” Mai soon approached with a small smile, “As always, you know how to leave an impression.”
“Leave an impression?” Ty Lee said, “She set the standard sky-high! Oh, Y/N should’ve seen this. Y/N would’ve been totally wowed!”
Azula almost jolt by the mention of your name. As if she had electrocute herself with her own lightning. Her eyes immediately glare at Ty Lee, usually fierce and controlled, but now it flickered with absolute disappointment. “Y/N or not, the performance would have been the same. I don’t perform for anyone’s approval.”
Azula felt weird. It was something bittersweet. It’s simple in words actually, she just long for your eyes to witness her element; her elegance and her perfection–all blended it in her ‘fiery’ performance, to share the countless training sessions into triumph–but now felt incomplete. Was that too much to ask?
“Maybe not,” Mai observed wryly, “but sometimes certain eyes matter more than other, don’t they?”
Azula’s gaze hardened to Mai, a silent glare that spoke volumes. But Mai was unfazed by the glare, somehow she was used to it.
“Y/N is busy with the date,” Ty Lee tried to defend, completely oblivious to the unspoken glares, “but anyway, we are going to celebrate! What about a dinner in your honor? Come on, it’ll be fun!”
Azula momentarily lost in the fact that you are busy with something that you had to bail on her performance–wait, what is the date? She decided to ask that later on and quickly set that aside as she straightened her posture, the commanding edge returning to her voice, “A celebration in order, indeed. Lead the way.”
As they started to follow to wherever Ty Lee’s are leading them towards, Azula still let her eyes momentarily drifted back to the empty space where she had hoped to see you. It was a fleeting glance, one filled with a mix of hope and resignation, before she finally turned away.
———
You finally made it to the place, the place your date will be waiting. You stepped into the restaurant, and was immediately taken aback in an atmosphere of elegance. It was bustling with energy, each table almost occupied by well-dressed patrons engaged in lively conversation, the clinking of fine china and glassware creating a harmonious backdrop. Soft, golden lightning bathed the room, casting a warm glow over the sophisticatedly decorated interior, accentuating it’s luxury.
Though you were no stranger to luxury, having spent considerable time in Azula’s opulent surroundings, the ambiance here was a refreshing change—to say the least. This place was a modern version of luxury you’re used to—sleek, polished, and contemporary. It was less about showcasing heritage or history, it is simply about aestheticity.
Comparing this to the Fire Nation’s palace, specifically Azula’s bedroom or her study room—where every corner told a story, every tapestry and artifact held a piece of history. You had always been fascinated by that world, a world where elegance was defined by it’s connection to the past, it’s cultural significance to the Fire Nation. But, if you had to choose: you knew your heart leaned more on the timeless, old and dusty artifacts in no time since you are such a history nerd.
Your mind took you back to the palace. Your mind showed you her face—that damned face. Her stupid beautiful face with her arrogance, her high ego that seemed impenetrable, and her refusal to be vulnerable with you. Then you remembered that today was her ‘fiery’ performance, where she practically show off her skill and power that was undeniably impressive, yet tinged with haughtiness.
You had deliberately missed it or rather bailed on it. It was a decision that is not easy but felt necessary. You believed Azula needed a lesson, a taste of what it felt like to have someone important to you not acknowledge your hard work, no matter how small or grand it is.
You remembered the countless moments when Azula had to let her ego overshadow their friendship. Azula always keeping a part of herself hidden, always maintaining that edge of superiority, always strive to perfection. You don’t need that perfect princess of Fire Nation; you had always been attracted by what makes Azula human. You love her intense passion, which made her arrogant but also made her deeply committed and earnest. You love her insecurities that she rarely voice out loud—but once she do, you savor her little doubts and asked your thoughts on it. You love her hidden softness in her usual confident and prideful exterior. You simply just love her, by her flaws.
Now, you are searching for a sign if you meant more to Azula than just another person in the friend group. You are reaching for cracks to Azula’s walls, to find a tender glimpse that you, more than anyone else, held a special place in her heart.
This date is more than just a dinner. It is a statement, a silent rebellion against Azula unyielding façade. Tonight, you wanted to feel that sting of absence, the pang of being ignored. You wanted Azula to realize what she was potentially losing. It was a gamble—provoking someone as strong-willed as Azula—but you felt it was necessary.
You had only one question: Will this finally drop Azula’s barriers?
“Hi, I’m Y/N,” You said to the receptionist, “I believe I’m expected by Chan?”
“Oh yes, Y/N! He’s been looking forward to your arrival. Just follow me, I’ll take you to him.” The receptionist glanced up at you, there was a brief flicker of recognition in her eyes—maybe too quick to be merely courteous acknowledgment from a staff member to a guest. In a place where the staff typically meets countless strangers daily, such a look is a bit odd, as if the receptionist had been expecting you, or perhaps knew of you in some way beyond the scope of a simple dinner reservation.
The receptionist weaved her way between elegantly set tables and past animated diners as you followed her through the bustling restaurant. The receptionist moved with a practiced ease, guiding you through with a casual grace.
“Our chef has some delightful specials tonight," she mentioned, gesturing subtly towards the kitchen, where the harmonious chaos of culinary creation was just visible. “Is there a particular type of cuisine you're fond of, or are you looking to be surprised?”
“I’m open to recommendations. Surprise is part of the experience, isn’t it?” you said. You wondered how, in a busy restaurant like this one, the staff could still afford to be so casual and engage in small talk. Perhaps she was just exceptionally good at her job.
The receptionist nodded, her smile still in place. But you caught a quick, almost imperceptible tap on her pocket. It was a weird gesture, a brief one though—but it made you questioned more. Was there more to this receptionist than met the eye?
No, no, you said to yourself. I’m here on a date. You shook off the thought as a byproduct of your cautious instinct.
Reaching a well-appointed table, the receptionist present you to Chan, who is apparently the restaurant owner, "Y/N, welcome!" Chan exclaimed, rising from his chair with a warm smile. He leaned in to peck your cheeks in a friendly greeting, then smoothly slid aside, gesturing gracefully to the chair, inviting you to take a seat.
You sat as the receptionist departed, you found your gaze subconsciously trailing the woman’s retreating figure. There was something about her you could not figure out, something like a hidden agenda beneath her polished exterior that catch your curiosity.
“I’m glad you could make it!” Chan interrupted your thoughts. You scolded yourself for possibly reading too much into a simple exchange, a habit you often fell back on— especially now with your thoughts deeply entangled in how Azula might respond to this evening.
“Well, thank you for inviting me, Chan. I heard so many great things about your restaurant.”
“How could I not invite someone as knowledgeable as you in culinary arts? I’ve been looking forward to our conversation all day.” His gaze lingered on you just a moment longer than necessary.
“And might I add, you look absolutely stunning tonight. Guess it’s not just the food that’s going to be exceptional.” His smile broadening, tone alight. He leaned slightly towards you, trying to close the physical and metaphorical gap between you two. His gestures were smooth and a well-rehearsed play.
The dinner progressed with a steady flow of conversation and laughter. Chan, ever the entertaining host, amused you with tales of the restaurant’s origins and his personal journey in the culinary world. Each story was accompanied by a detail explanation, his knowledge in arts and history were evident— that made you intrigued, his enthusiasm were entirely contagious too.
“I'm definitely interested in those stories,” you confessed, “Did you know I stumbled upon a recipe from Princess Azula’s ancestral line? It’s amazing to see how food connects with history!"
"No kidding? That’s the kind of stuff that makes my job cool, right? We should totally whip that up sometime. Might impress the Princess or even the Firelord, too. You know, they got quite the taste for the authentic."
You nodded eagerly, you stand up by what he said, your smile brightened, “It's all about the details, isn’t it? She values that in everything, food included.” Your gaze briefly flickered to the door, half-expecting, half-hoping for her to burst in—but the door remained closed.
“Absolutely,” he said, as you two were finishing dessert, “Speaking of details, how about after dinner, we take a closer look at some of the exclusive wines I’ve got? A private tasting, just for us. It said dated a while back to Avatar Roku’s age! Could be a nice way to wind down the evening, you know?”
His invitation was clear, his gaze intent on you, slightly dimming. The suggestion was tempting, it was wrapped in the complex of his stories that you really enjoyed and it was a possibility to continue your fun conversation. But it was also unmistakably laced with an intention that went beyond a simple wine tasting.
Chan leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a suggestive whisper, his hand finding reasons to brush against yours under the impression of emphasizing a point. He was intruding  your personal space, his body language more assertive than courteous.
You shifted uncomfortably in your seat, your mind’s racing. You were aware of Chan’s motives. And now he was trying his best to lure you into accepting his request. He sensed your hesitation; thus escalate his flirtations even more.
You look around for some form of silent support. You realized you might get none. The staff, loyal to Chan, were unlikely to intervene. The patrons were too absorbed in their own worlds, oblivious in your discomfort. Then, you locked eyes with the woman you noticed earlier— the receptionist.
Her gaze was intense, not just observing the scene between you and Chan, but seemingly focused on you yourself. In that brief eye contact, you felt a strange sense of safety—a little bit. The receptionist, whatever her role or reason for being there, was a witness, an outsider to the unfolding scenario.
“You know,” Chan said, “I once threw a party back in the day, at my parent’s place.”
He grew bolder; you could feel it. He was getting impatient with your hesitance, so he decided to shift tactics.
“There was this girl, like you,” he began, a mischievous glint in his eye. “Sophisticated, smart, but impulsive. We hit it off, and well, let’s just say, we shared a memorable kiss that night.”
He paused for effect, his smile grew. “But here’s the twist— suddenly, we found the house in ruins. Turn out, she had a bit of a wild side. Wrecked the place. My parents were furious and I was too. But she still live up here,” he pointed to his forehead. “I couldn’t help admiring her spirit, now.”
The story, seemingly harmless, but you knew there was something intended; what is he trying to say? You knew he was subtly warning you of your next move. It was a veiled attempt to gauge your response.  The clock ticked on, each minute stretching longer than the last. You found yourself at a crossroads. Part of you wanted to put an end to the evening, to assert your boundaries firmly. Yet another part, the strategist within you, contemplated the potential outcome.
Screw it.  You went this far.  Screw you, Azula.
“I’d be delighted to see your winery,” you said, voice steady. You made your decision.  Chan’s face lit up, he giggled boyishly.
You instantly pictured Azula’s reaction— would it be jealousy, anger, or indifference? The uncertainty was agonizing yet exhilarating. You doubt the effectiveness of this decision; Azula was a fortress of composure and arrogance. Could this be the key to crush her?
Your thoughts swirled as you left the restaurant, hand in hand with Chan. You decided the night was young, and the possibilities were endless. There was no turning back now.
From the corner of your eye, you saw a woman, disheveled and frantic, burst through the restaurant doors, clutching a young boy in her arms. The boy was pale, his condition visibly dire. The restaurant, a moment ago, a peaceful haven of lively diners, plunged into chaos.
“Help!” The woman cried loudly. “My son! He is sick because of your food!”
Chan, caught off guard, hurried back inside, with you following closely behind. Your heart pounded. The mother’s anguish was blatant, her voice breaking through the murmurs of the startled diners.
“Ma’am, please, calm down. Let’s not jump to conclusions. Tell me what happened.” Chan said, trying to maintain control.
“We eat your leftovers, and now he’s like this! You did this to him!” she cried out, almost hysterically. She clutched the poor boy close, her eyes were wild with panic and desperation.
“Everyone, please listen!” the mother continued, “This isn’t just about me and my son. It’s about you too, how can you eat here, not knowing if your food is safe? My son is dying because of this place!” Her voice cut through the room, her desperation resonating with every patron.
Chan seemed irritated, he blocked her from reaching the diners, “Ma’am, I understand you’re upset, but making unfounded accusations won’t help. Let’s discuss this privately and find a solution, yes?”
The mother, ignoring Chan’s presence altogether, turned to other diners. “Would you all just sit there if it was your child? He was fine before eating the leftovers, but look at him now!”
“I’ll assure you, our food is prepared to the highest standards. We’ll call for medical help right away, but please, let’s not cause a scene.” Chan tried again, though he was visibly flustered.
“A scene?” The mother shrieked, “My child is dying! How can you talk about scenes? You need to take responsibility!”
Chan struggling to maintain his professional demeanor, signaled his staff to intervene, hoping to move the mother and her son away from the public eye.
You stood there, a bystander. You froze from the unfolding scene before you. Your plan to provoke Azula suddenly seeming insignificant in the face of such raw human vulnerability. It was heart-wrenching, a stark contrast to the calculated world you’re used to, a world you shared with Azula.
And you loved this. You would love to see it in Azula.
You heard Chan sighed. His earlier confidence had evaporated. This was not how he had envisioned the evening—what was supposed to be a simple date with a girl had spiraled into his career nightmare. He looked back to you, offering a small smile that he tried doing genuinely. He looked tired. You couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for him.
As the tension of the restaurant simmered, the sudden arrival of men, dressed in crisp, light blue uniforms with the emblem of public health department prominently displayed. The health inspectors. What are they doing in here?
Accompanying the inspectors were a couple of royal palace guards, adding a layer of urgency to the situation. These officials grabbed the attention of all eyes in the place.
What the Agni is this about?
“Good evening, Mr. Chan,” the health inspector said, “We’ve received an urgent complaint regarding a health hazard in this establishment. We need to conduct an immediate inspection.”
Chan with his face a mix of confusion and panic, quickly stepped forward to greet them. “This must be some misunderstanding. Our kitchen adheres to the highest of standards. Can we discuss this privately, perhaps?”
“I’m afraid this is a matter of public safety. We must proceed with the inspection now. In full view of your patrons.” He surveyed the restaurant with keen eyes.
“Please, let’s handle this discretely,” Chan practically begged and almost fell to his knees, “I promise, whatever the issue, we’ll cooperate fully. There’s no need for a public spectacle.”
“Our priority is the health and safety of the public, Mr. Chan,” said he firmly, “We need to inspect your kitchen and restrict all activities within. We are ensuring that there are no violations.”
The health inspectors, without warning, walked towards the kitchen, with a pleading Chan following closely behind them. As you stood by the door, left, deserted, you had no idea what to do now. The restaurant buzzed with whispers and speculation from the patrons. The air was thick with tension, drama after drama are unfolding way too fast.
The timing of the inspection was too precise, too perfectly aligned with the chaos the mother had caused.
You grew suspicious to the inspectors. You observed them; they moved with an air of the outmost confidence and purpose that seemed beyond the usual protocol. Their approach was methodical, almost as if they were following a script.
Moreover, the presence of the guards, royal guards. What are their business with this?
These details, all in different kind that if were put together—it formed a picture. A scheme. An orchestration. You had aligned it all to form it’s real essence—which point to her involvement.
You knew Azula’s penchant for dramatic flair; you knew this was controlled and design thoroughly, unyielding and impactful; you knew the guards were a show of force, a tactic that Azula often employed to assert dominance and control. And the mother? Was that her plan too?
This wasn’t just a simple health inspection; it was a revenge in a larger game she recently launched, in perfect motion. From this, you knew that this night was far from over, and that the aftermath of Azula’s actions would ripple far beyond the walls of the restaurant.
“Ms. Y/N,” a guard spoke, “Princess Azula request your presence at the palace immediately.”
You expected it, but you were also caught off guard. You were about to dismiss the guard when the receptionist from earlier appeared beside him. She gave you a subtle nod, her expression betraying nothing, yet is trying to tell something. In that instant, you realized the truth—the receptionist was more than she seemed, likely a spy placed by Azula, to monitor your movements.
You acknowledged Azula’s cunning and what a dick move she pulled. You can’t help but respect this carefully designed scheme but frustrated to the supervision that limits your own autonomy. The latter emotion got the best of you than the former. “Tell Princess Azula I’m not at her beck and call. I won’t be going to the palace.”
The guard’s expression remained impassive, but it was the receptionist who stepped forward, breaking her professional facade. In a swift, startling motion, she slapped you across the face, the sound echoed sharply.
“You don’t understand,” she said urgently, “You need to come with us now. It’s not a request.”
The slap left a burning sensation on your cheek. It was unexpected and forceful. The onlookers in the restaurant paused, the scene unfolding before them adding to the night’s surreal quality.
Realizing that resistance might escalate the situation further, you reluctantly nodded in agreement, “Fine, I’ll come. But this isn’t the end of it.” You shifted your eyes to the receptionist, she was somehow surprised herself. Her actions, It was a breach of protocol.
As they escorted you away from the restaurant, you felt a sense of being a pawn in a larger game, a feeling that was becoming all too familiar. ——— Azula sat calmly in her opulent study room, her posture relaxed, unpinning her hairpin and let her hair fall. She was waiting for you, expecting you to burst through the door at any moment, fueled by your anger and frustration.
Azula had done the evening’s event with precision, pushing you to your limits. She anticipated that this act would be the peak to finally see your raw astonishment that she believed you harbored for her.
The door opened, but not with force or drama that Azula had expected. You entered quietly, your expression unreadable, your usual kindled spirit replaced by an unsettling calm. Azula’s lips curved into a sly smile, intrigued by this new side of you.
“Well, well, Y/N,” Azula started, “I must say, I’m terribly sorry. I was expecting a grand entrance. Did you lose your fire along the date?”
You remained silent, your eyes locking with Azula’s. There was a depth in your gaze, a tumult of emotions you harbored beneath.
“Come now, don’t hold back my account. I know my little game at the restaurant must have… stirred things up for you.”
“Your games are getting old, Princess,” you finally replied, “Do you always need to manipulate situations to feel in control?”
Azula leaned forward, breaking a genuine smile. You hadn’t change at all. And Azula is enjoying this.
“Oh, Y/N, manipulation is such a harsh word. I prefer,” she paused, “strategic planning.”
She saw your faint smile, she knew you would not backing down. “Strategic planning that involves putting a homeless family in distress? You’re losing your touch.”
“On the contrary, I’d say my touch is quite effective. It brought you here, didn’t it?”
You side eyed her, “Maybe I’m just here to tell you that your ‘strategic planning’ is backfiring. You’re not as in control as you think.”
Azula’s eyes narrowed, she was both admired and irritated by your resilience. She had long for your anguish to confront her, but your composed defiance was a curveball she hadn’t anticipated.
She sighed. “Or maybe you’re just afraid to admit that you enjoy my little game. Admit it, Y/N, you love the challenge as much as I do.”
You walked to her, leaning in close, lowering your voice. “There’s a fine line between a challenge and a reckless game, Princess. Be careful not to cross it.”
Azula waved her hand dismissively, “Always so serious. Where’s the fun in playing it safe?”
“This isn’t funny, Azula,” your voice impatient, “Your little game at the restaurant, using that woman and her son—it’s cruel. You manipulated their distress for your own amusement.”
“I’m being cruel to be kind. I gave the boy the best medical attention. Plus, the sister received a job now—but a shame it will be in ruins. Anyway, There’s no need for you to worry about that.”
Your face redden. Azula could sense youre infuriated. “How dare you use someone’s vulnerability for your own selfish ends? These are people live. Our people!”
Azula, usually unfazed, was taken aback. She felt goosebumps in your intense voice, a seriousness that was rarely encountered.
“You think I don’t know that?” Azula raised from her seat, “Everything I do, I do for a reason. You of all people should understand that.”
“Understand? What is there to understand about exploiting a desperate mother and her dying child? I want to see you vulnerable for once, Azula. I want to see you hurt, to see you break.” You roared as you were shaking. There was a palpable silence in the room as your words hung in the air. It was a raw, emotional confession, one that revealed the depth of your desperate goal to that date.
Azula did not know how to respond, your emotion was too intense for her to handle. Azula felt a twinge of something unfamiliar. Was it guilt? Regret? For a moment, her fortress of composure wavered.
“Is that what you really want, Y/N? To see me broken?” she asked, surprisingly soft and weak.
“I don’t know what I want anymore.” You choked, “But I can’t keep doing this. Not with you, not like this.” Tears, unbidden, spilled from your eyes, your resilience crumbling under the weight of your emotions.
Azula stood there, feeling a sudden urge to reach out, to offer comfort. It was an odd desire that clashed with her self-restraint, her need to always be in control.
You turned to leave. “Where do you think you’re going?” something within Azula compelled her to made you stay. It was a surge of emotion, random and messy, unlike anything she had ever allowed herself to feel. She rushed to you with a determined stride.
You suddenly paused at the door, looked back at Azula, watery eyes. “Every game has it risk, right, Azula?” your voice faltered, barely a whisper.
“What are you getting at, Y/N?”
Azula watched you looked down, thinking something. “In the next of your act, I promise you it would include real danger—a situation I’ll go that even you can’t control.”
Azula scoffed, “You wouldn’t dare, you’re not that reckless.”
That took so much to say for Azula. She half-expected to see your ego arise from the compliment. But as she looked into your eyes, she saw something that gave her a pause. There was no trace of the usual sarcasm or defiance. Instead, there was a deep, unsettling seriousness.
“Y/N, you’re joking, come on laugh it out,” Her heart pounded. “If you’re trying to provoke me, there are better ways.”
You remained silent, your expression unwavering. You turned to leave for real now, your steps resolute.
Panicked, Azula lunged towards the door. Swift and forceful, she slammed the door shut, effectively blocking your path of escape. Her heart raced with adrenaline and unusually breathless.
“You’re playing with fire, Y/N. Literally and figuratively.” Azula searched your eyes, looking for a sign. But all she found was an empty resolve that send a chill down her spine.
You finally looked back at her, your voice cold and distant, “Sometimes, you have to get burned to see the light. You’ll understand when it’s too late, Azula. When you’ve finally lost.”
Azula felt your words like a physical blow, her face twitching in pain, her mask completely shattered. She knew this was a trap. But the threat brought something in the depth of her own feelings—the potential cost of losing you, forever.
You two just looked at each other, thick with absolute silence.
“Don’t be stupid.” Azula gritted her teeth.
You pushed Azula away. Then your figure slipped from the door with a slam. The room felt colder. The air was suddenly thick that almost made Azula suffocate. The door closed, leaving Azula alone with her thoughts.
The game had change, and for the first time, Azula was uncertain of her next move.

You had been friends with Zuko back when you still lived in the Fire Nation. You had grown up alongside him and his sister, Azula, as your father was on of the Firelord's more trusted generals.
As a young child, you were never very interested in playing games with Azula and her friends. You preferred spending quiet time with Zuko around the palace.
Zuko never understood how he felt about you.. Of course he liked you. The two of you were friends, best friends even. But, did best friends make a fiery red blush rise from your face to the tops of your ears? Did a best friends cause your heart to stop beating every time you got lost in their eyes?
Even now, as his golden eyes met yours, his heart felt as if it would beat out of his chest. He carefully studied you as you sat in the corner of the tea shop. You had changed. Your hair was different, maybe a bit longer than he remembered, and you had swapped out your red Fire Nation clothes for a simple green dress -- an Earth Nation staple. Most notably, your bright eyes had remained the same.
You studied him as well. This Zuko was much different than the boy you knew as a child. His hair was much shorter, and his once warm golden eyes had grown dull. You wondered, how had he ended up in a Ba Sing Se tea shop of all places? After his banishment from the Fire Nation, you weren't sure if you would ever see him again.
"Uncle, we have a problem," said Zuko as he approached his uncle behind the front counter, "Don't look now, but over in the corner table, it's (Y/N)."
Iroh swiftly turned to glance at your table. He recognized you in an instant. His mind was flooded with the memories of you and Zuko growing uo together in the palace.
"Uncle!" Zuko scolds, "Didn't I say don't look? Now they're gonna know that we're onto them."
Before Iroh could respond, you walked up to the counter with a small bag of coins in hand.
"Thank you for the tea, Zuko," you said politely, "And you too general Iroh."
Zuko felt heat rise to his ears. He had always though you were pretty, and seeing you up close was starting to make him a but flustered. "But why?" he thought to himself. Were friends supposed to think of each other that way?
"You're welcome," said Zuko with red checks, "But you can't call us that here. I go by Lee. And my uncle is called Mushi"
"Sorry!" you said quickly, as your face flushed with embarrassment, "I didn't even think that you would go by different names here. Speaking of which, what are you doing here anyway?"
"Well," Zuko said, "It's not really something we can discuss here."
"My nephew is right!" Iroh said, jumping back into the conversation, "Why don't the two of you go out tonight and discuss how both of you came to be in Ba Sing Se?"
At Iroh's suggestion, Zuko turned even redder, if possible.
"I like that idea," you said shyly before turning back to Zuko, "I know a restaurant in the city if you'd like to go there."
"Yeah..that sounds...nice," Zuko said quietly, "I can meet you in front of the tea shop tonight."
"Yeah," you said with a grin, "See you tonight."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After it had gotten dark, you stood outside of the tea shop waiting for Zuko. As you waited, you began to hear muffled voices from inside the shop.
"i'm not so sure about this, Uncle," said Zuko hesitantly "What if they end up hating me after I tell them. I don't want to lose them again."
"Do not worry Zuko. They have a god heart, and so do you. Now get going. You're going to be late."
"Hi," you said as Zuko walked out of the tea shop, "Are you ready to go?"
"Yeah," said Zuko, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, "Lead the way."
The two of you walked in an uncomfortable silence. The tension between you could be cut with a knife. After a brief walk, which somehow felt so much longer than the short 10 minutes, you came to a stop outside of a small restaurant.
"This is it," you said awkwardly, "Do you wanna go find a table?"
"Sure," said Zuko, before you fell into another uncomfortable silence.
"So," you said after you had settled in your seats, "What are you doing here in Ba Sing Se anyway? I thought you were looking for the avatar."
"I am!" Zuko said quickly, "But Uncle and I got a bit sidetracked. Azula's after us."
Your eyes widened in shock.
"Azula? But what could she want from you? She's already next in line to become firelord."
"My father," said Zuko quietly, "He sent her after me and the avatar. He doesn't seem to think my efforts to capture him are good enough."
"Of course," you said in a rare burst of anger, "I should have known your father would do anything to prevent you from returning to the Fire Nation. That's part of the reason I left, you know."
"Really?" said Zuko curiously.
He had always wondered what made you leave the Fire Nation. Although he had already been banished at that time, he had heard through letters from the Fire Nation that you had run away shortly after his father sent him to find the avatar. Selfishly, he couldn't help but think that you had left for him.
"I never really agreed with the Fire Nation's teachings," you said honestly, "I always wondered why we were taught that our way of life was better than everyone else, when, truly, each one of us should be seen as equals. But when your own father challenged you to an Agni Kai, I realized that we really weren't the heroes the Fire Nation said we were. We were the villains. I came out here to try and make a difference. I can't just stand by while our people destroy the world and everyone in it."
Zuko's gaze met you eyes and he saw the many emotions swirling inside of them. Most importantly the fiery determination that he hadn't seen since childhood. As your words sank in, he though about how he and his uncle had ended up in the city. Unlike you, who, through your unwavering need to help others, had worked the make life easier for the people whose life had been torn apart by the Fire Nation, he had spent the better part of a month terrorizing innocent towns on his hunt for the avatar.
"I always wished I could be more like you, you know," Zuko said ashamed, "I always thought I was doing the right thing by tracking down the avatar, but after seeing all the damage the Fire Nation has caused, maybe I've been doing a lot more harm than good."
You smiled at him before softly cupping his face.
"You're not a bad person, Zuko," you said quietly, "I know there's good in you. You just need someone to help you find it."
You felt Zuko's skin burn under your touch, as you look into his golden eyes, which are filled with hesitation. As you leaned closer, you could hear Zuko's breath hitch as his breath caught in his throat. Zuko began to lean in, hoping you couldn't hear his heart beating at a thousand miles an hour.
Your lips finally connected, for a brief second, before you pulled apart, faces flushed.
"You, know," Zuko said quietly, "I missed you a lot after I left the Fire Nation."
You smiled softly.
"So did I," you said before gently pulling him into another kiss.

Azula x Female Reader
Mentions: little angst, fluff, Lesbians
Sorry for any errors
Azula x Female Reader
“ No one has ever had to hide the way that we do Azula. I’m afraid they won’t accept us.” You said with tears slipping down your cheeks. “ Just because this stupid and horrible world judges us and says that we can be nothing that won’t stop us. I love you baby girl more than anything. I want you to be happy and enjoy every moment we have together.” Azula said. She wiped your tears. You girls loved each other but loving the same sex was seen as disgusting and almost like it’s forbidden. You and Azula met about 4 years after Zuko became the next Fire Lord. You lived in the palace due to being Mai’s long distant friend.
How you two met was a bit wild. You were out and about outside the Fire Nation. You decided to travel to Kyoshi Island and visit Ty Lee. Mai said she’d greet you with open arms. Along the way you needed to stop at a Hotel and eventually found one. It was large, beautiful and expensive, it almost looked like a section of the palace.. Perfect for Azula. She knew how to survive. She’s strong, smart, beautiful and wild. On the way inside you bumped into a group of men. They looked very important. “Watch where you are going, you insolent girl.” one of the men said, shoving you away. You landed on your side. You had a bit of a spicy side of yourself. Standing up you turned your water into ice cutting cheek.“ You’re not a gentleman at all you asshole.” Azula walked over. “You’re making a scene outside my Hotel. You stupid guys run along before I kill you myself.” Her face confirmed her words. As she turned to look at you her heart skipped a beat. You were wearing some short tights with a short blue and white skirt over it. Your shirt was white with blue snowflake prints. Your shoes were cute as well. The way you wore your hair showed your wonderful facial features. Azula was checking you out. You cleared your throat. “I’d like a room please.” you also checked her out as you walked behind her into the Hotel. Azula was highly aware of it. She saw the mirror. “ What are you doing traveling alone?” Azula asked, grabbing a key and showing you to your room. “I’m on my way to visit a friend.” you replied feeling a bit lonely. “You sound lonely. I’ll keep you company since midday. I’ll show you around. Come on, pretty lady.” Azula said grabbing you and all day you went around town having fun. You thought you’d stay longer. Longer meaning about 6 months and along the way you fell in love. One day you were at a temple confessing what you were feeling. An old lady overheard you. “You shouldn’t be ashamed of loving someone so dearly and passionately. Don’t ignore your feelings otherwise you’ll regret it later on.” you smiled and ran back to Azula. The sun went down by then. As Azula was about to get ready you walked into her room. “Oh hey y/n. Is everything alright? Do you need something?”She asked and stepped forward as you started crying. You didn’t even know it was happening. This was your chance and you took it. You went up to her tipped toed and gave her a loving kiss. She was shocked at first but relaxed and kissed back. It got heated to the point where she hovered over you on the bed. You blushed. “I love you.” you spoke playing with the necklace you had on. “ I love you too.” Azula replied.
After that it was history.
“ If Mai and Zuko reject us..it’s fine but are you sure?” Azula asked. “Yes Azula..I want to live a normal life here without being attacked.” You replied. Azula waited at the balcony as you went to see Zuko and Mai. “ FireLord Zuko. Thank you for making time to see me..I have a request.” You said formally. Zuko stood up and walked over. He smiled and smacked your arm. “y/n. Don’t treat me like we don’t know each other idiot.” He replied. You smiled and giggled with Mai. “Now what’s your request?” he asked. “I would like to live here in the Fire Nation permanently..I swear I won’t cause any trouble and I will use my Water bending only for good like I always have.” you replied playing with your necklace. “Yeah you’re my friend and Mai’s basically sister.” He replied, rubbing your arm. “I want to live with my other half.” you said and Mai squealed. Odd of her to do. “You never told me you had a boyfriend!!” you looked away. “I love that person more than anything..outside..I would like you to meet.” you walked over to the balcony. Azula turned around. She went and kneeled down. “Its an honor to see you FireLord Zuko.” She said, looking at him. It wasn’t Mai she was worried about but her brother. The one she has hurt her entire life. The person she tried to kill. “Get up.” Zuko ordered. She obeyed. “ This is my girlfriend Azula.” You said. You were confused on why Zuko and Mai were upset. “What’s going on?” you asked. “ She’s Zuko’s little sister. Azula. She is a monster. How the hell did you fall in love with someone who has killed people and tried killing her own brother?” Mai said she was upset for sure but she also felt betrayed. “I’ve changed. I love y/n. I am happy with her. After the war it took some time for me to open my eyes and heart but I did. I met y/n only 6 months ago. We want to start a new life here. Please..if you wont accept me..at least allow her to live here peacefully.” Azula said. Her heart was aching on how they reacted but she expected that. How could she not. “ Zuko..Mai, I’m in love with Azula. I want to grow old with her. She’s my life and world. Please consider it.” You cried. They just stood there without saying a word. Azula held you close. She did that because she felt like it would be the last time she’d ever see you before they’d take and lock her up, for all the pain, suffering she committed and war crimes. Zuko saw how much they truly love each other. How you were certain she was the one for you. “Look you know what..We don’t care if you don’t accept our relationship but I love her and we think we start-” You were cut off by Zuko. “You can live here..only in the palace. That way I can keep a close eye on Azula. The world doesn’t need to suffer again. Azula..you are my little sister…so I’m giving you a chance..I don’t trust you yet..You better love Y/n to death. Do not hurt her in any way. If you do, you'll regret it.” He replied walking away getting your room ready. Azula carried you and spun you around. You giggled then kissed her as she set you down. Mai coughed. You two stopped. “Right s-sorry.” Azula said. “You girls will have a room to have fun.” Mai said. You blushed and your cheeks felt hot. “Mai!!” you yelled. Azula looked at her and smirked. You girls couldn’t help but laugh loudly. Zuko heard you all laughing and he smiled. "I'm glad she found someone. Azula you got blessed." He spoke.

As long as you want
Masterlist
Pairing: Azula x Male!Reader
Slot: Dirty talk+First time+Age difference
A/N: I wrote this with the reader being around 25 and Azula being around 20
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Y/N I got another mission for you” Your leader threw you a scroll, one with a black ribbon. A message from the castle, you unravel the scroll and it told you to come to the palace immediately. You quickly found out that Firelord Azula was the one who sent for you,she wanted you as her personal bodyguard.
That was about three years ago,you eventually got close to her. Enough to the point where she confessed her feelings to you,and you start dating. It was a secret at the start but eventually everyone knew. Recently she was getting a lot more handsy with you, constantly trying or having her hands on you. She wasn’t normally affectionate which made you finally ask her.
“I want to…”She trailed off.
“Want to..” She avoided looking at you
“I want to have sex with you!” She suddenly shouted, before realizing what she said her face was bright red.
“Let’s do it”
“What..”
“You’re not backing out on me now,are you?”
“You’ve done this before?” She suddenly asked as you started taking off your clothes.
“You haven’t?” She once again avoided your eyes, you touched her cheek. “Just follow my lead”
***
You had her bouncing up and down, firmly gripping her hips. She moved faster and faster, her moans getting louder as you rubbed her clit.
“Y/N” She tried catching her breath but with her moaning like crazy she couldn’t. You forced her down quicker as you moved your hips at the same time making her cum. You let her catch her breath. “Y/N,that was-” You flipped her onto her back.
“You really think that’s all I got,we’re not done, not until the sun rises”
“You can’t be suggesting that-” You cut her off once again”
“Oh,I’m not suggesting I’m telling you exactly what’s going to happen. I hope you don’t plan on doing anything tomorrow, including walking” You kissed her as you started moving, she wrapped her legs around you. “For someone who’s never done this you sure are eager” You whispered into her ear.
“Just do that again,it felt really goodShe whispered the last part, but you caught it. Biting down her on her neck as you pounded into her. “Y/N,f-faster” You kept going again and again. Until her neck was red and purple, and you were sure her legs wouldn’t carry her anymore.
“So,what did you think?”
“I’ve never felt something like that, could we go again?”
“Give me a minute”
“I thought you said, until sunrise. You’re not backing out now are you?” You pointed to the window, revealing it was sunrise.
“I don’t break my promises, but we cloud go as many times as you like”

Hello can you do obsessive yandre Azula ?
OOOHHH! I hope you like this :)
Tumblr media
She gets aggressive over every little thing
You're the calm to her storm
Ty Lee and Mai were surprised when Azula introduced you and said she was dating you
Though they accepted you with open arms, especially Ty Lee
Azula doesn't like you talking to Ty Lee all that much, not that she think you'll leave her, because why would you leave her for Ty Lee of all ppl, but mainly because Ty Lee gets so flirty
You personally don't want to fight in this war, but not even you can convince Azula to not take down the Avatar
You and Azula met when you were children, when you were helping your father
She had been running from her brother with Ty Lee, as they had just pushed him and Mai in the fountain together
Her eyes practically lit up when you made eye contact
She would watch you from afar which was weird for her, because she was never shy
Whenever she would see you, she would shoot her father to try and impress you
When she finally was able to talk to you, her face was a bright red and she stuttered with her words, while you giggled/chuckled at her
You kissed her first and she froze
Then when you ran away, she ran after you, yelling at you to come back
She's only vulnerable with you which makes your betrayal so much worse
When you betray her, to protect the Avatar, Azula loses any bit of sanity she had left and her whole world falls apart
She loved you more than you loved her
Though her love was obsessive

Imagine teasing Sokka and Suki for being embarassingly romantic and them getting revenge when they realise you like Zuko
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sokka and Suki were a great couple, their only flaw however was the sickening things they said to each other publically. You were travelling to Ba Sing Sei and ran into Suki who waited precisely 5 minutes before flirting with Sokka. “Look at you sleeveless guy, been working out?” Suki asked Sokka. You gagged loudly drawing Suki’s attention but Sokka didn’t seem to hear you. “I’ll grab a tree branch and do a few chin touches every now and then” he bragged and you snorted “more like a twig, you couldn’t lift a tree branch if you were a wood bender”. Sokka and Suki shot you a look but Katara and Toph laughed. You hated romance and anytime someone was sweet or soppy you couldn’t be in the vicinity. Unfortunately Sokka and Suki (mainly Sokka) turned into lovey-dovey messes around each other every single time.
The rest of the gang all thought you were being dramatic apart from Toph but that wasn’t much consolation considering her feelings were driven by her crush on Sokka. You tried to tolerate as much as you could but sometimes they were just downright sickening. You thought you were the only person who hated romance and then Zuko arrived. Apparently you were just from the wrong nation. Zuko quickly explained how affection and love ballads weren’t a thing in the fire nation. People expressed themselves but usually in more subtle and private ways which suited you perfectly. So reassured you weren’t crazy you relaxed and became eager to find out how suited to the fire nation you actually were. To do this you spent time with Zuko learning about his nation. You were fascinated by everything he told you and absorbed everything he told you about his culture.
“I’m moving to the fire nation after all this” you announced one evening when Zuko told you dancing also wasn’t a thing in the fire nation. “It turns out they’re my people so why waste any time? After this invasion business is wrapped up I’ll be moving into a fancy house right by the palace, right Zuko?”. Zuko smirked slightly at your tone and nodded “I promise once this is all over if you want to move to the fire nation I can arrange that, fancy house and all”. Zuko then excused himself to make some tea and you smiled watching him. “Man it’s good being friends with the prince” you smiled leaning back on your arms and Sokka rolled his eyes. “Sure friends...” he smirked and you frowned “we are friends, just because Zuko hates most things doesn’t mean he hasn’t warmed up to me”. “Ow I’m not doubting he’s warmed up to you, i’m merely suggesting that’s not all”. You sat up, getting angrier by the second at Sokka’s tone and sighed “just say whatever you’re hinting at, I know you’re dying to”. Sokka laughed “you and Zuko...you like each other romantically”. You laughed in response “no we don’t! Where did you get that idea from?”. This time Sokka laughed “ow I don’t know maybe by how you stay up late together by the campfire trading stories or how you stare at him transfixed when he tells you about the fire nation”. “Because i’m interested in other cultures!” you cried and Sokka smirked “nice try y/n but we all know you’re interested in more than Zuko’s culture” Sokka said suggestively and you blushed vividly making him laugh loudly. “You had no idea what you’re talking about!” you cried and stormed away.
Although you denied Sokka’s accusations they planted a seed in your head and you began wondering if your feelings for Zuko were more than a friendship. It had surprised you how well the two of you got along and you did find yourself drawn to him more and more. Maybe Sokka, shockingly, was right.
You couldn’t sleep, Sokka’s words were still in your head so you went for a stroll. From your vantage point you spotted movement. It was Zuko and he was climbing up on Appa.  You frowned and part of you wondered if Zuko was trying to steal him but only a small part. You thought it much more likely something else was going on so crept your way to Appa and waited. Not long after Sokka appeared. Zuko scared him making him fall hard. “Well that was dramatic” you commented from your hiding place and Zuko jumped following Sokka on his fall to the ground. You grinned seeing both of them rubbing their heads staring up at you and jumped down “so what’s going on?”. Sokka soon explained his plan to save his dad from prison and you and Zuko managed to convince him to let you come. You left a more convincing note for the others explaining your absence than Sokka’s “went fishing” idea and took off.
You and Sokka decided to nap seeing as you wouldn’t arrive till morning and Zuko agreed to keep watch. You woke a few hours later to see Zuko still stood in the same position staring out at the scenery. “Hey” you smiled “you okay?”. “Yeah i’m fine” Zuko said softly and you raised an eyebrow. “Really? Because you haven’t moved from that position in hours”. Zuko turned to face you fully “don’t worry I’m fine, just keeping watch that’s all”. You nodded and looked out at the sunrise. “So how are you feeling about heading back into the fire nation?” you asked. Zuko shrugged “indifferent to be honest, the idea doesn’t really bother me. I just hope we all get in and out safely”. You nodded but Zuko hadn’t quietened your worry “aren’t you concerned about someone recognising you? What if we see someone you know...maybe this is too dangerous for you?”. “I’ll be fine y/n” Zuko said simply and went to move away again when he paused “but thanks for your concern for me”. You locked eyes and panicked over what to say. “Err no problem” you blushed “just don’t die”. Zuko chuckled “I’ll try not to” and turned back to manning the ship. You stared after him blushing when Sokka appeared suddenly “what time is it, did I miss much? Wait why are you...”. “Nothing shut up” you cried and went inside the cabin so Sokka couldn’t see the vivid blush on your face.
You landed the ship and soon snuck into the prison. You couldn’t find Hakoda but you did manage to find someone else. “It’s Suki!” Sokka cried and you sighed “ow god...get ready for it” you whispered to Zuko who frowned “ready for what? Who’s Suki?”. “Only the most amazing beautiful wonderful girls in the world!” Sokka yelled and you shot Zuko a look “that”.
Once you found Suki everything fell into place. Hakoda arrived and you’d worked out an escape plan and not a moment too soon as Azula, Ty lee and Mai arrived. Azula and Ty lee were hot in pursuit and you managed to dodge most of their attacks but all it took was one. Azula sent a large attack at you and there was nowhere to dodge it on the narrow platform. You winced as Azula’s flame pushed you hard into the wall and heard Sokka yell your name. Zuko reached you first and you groaned trying to move your arm “somethings wrong with it”. “Can you move it?”. You shook your head and Zuko frowned “I think it’s dislocated”. “Dislocated?” Sokka cried “what do we do?”. “I can fix it we just have to get her to the barge, y/n can you stand?”. You nodded but groaned as your arm moved. Zuko grabbed onto you and placed your good arm around his shoulder “is this alright or do you need me to carry you?”. “This is fine” you blushed and Zuko nodded helping you get to the barge. Once inside Zuko started working on your shoulder, talking you through what he was going to do softly.
“It's gonna hurt but just try and focus on something else okay?”. You nodded and honestly it wasn’t difficult. Zuko was staring at you, filled with concern, as he tried to gently fix your shoulder. You were more focused on not blushing than your shoulder and it didn’t help that the others were watching everything. Sokka seemed to have a smug smile despite the circumstance and you reminded yourself to kill him later.
After Zuko set your shoulder you drifted off to sleep and awoke back at the temple where Katara was overseeing Zuko’s work. When they realised you were awake they both rushed to you but Zuko got to you first. “You’re awake!” he cried “how are you feeling?”. “Okay...” you replied tenderly “my shoulder feels a bit sore”. Katara nodded “that’s to be expected, i’d rest it for at least a week and make sure you don’t do any heavy lifting with it okay?”. You nodded and Katara excused herself with a smile. “You’re really okay?” Zuko asked and you nodded “yeah, sorry I guess I wasn’t much help in the final fight, did everything go okay?”. Zuko shook his head “don’t be silly you were hurt! We were all just worried about you more than anything. We got away fine with some help and all made it back in one piece”. “Wow that almost sounds too good to be true, we got lucky”. Zuko nodded “we really did” before he smirked mischievously. “And to think after all that warning about it being too dangerous for me, you’re the one who tried to take on my sister alone” Zuko smirked teasing you and you struggled not to blush. “Yeah well you are the prince of the fire nation remember, I just have really bad luck”. Zuko smiled “sure you do, either way be more careful next time okay?”. “Only if you are” you retorted and Zuko nodded “deal” gripping your hand in promise. His gaze lingered on you for a few seconds too long and he abruptly stepped back “erm I’ll leave to let you get changed and freshen up, I’ll come visit you later. Get well soon”. You nodded and searched for something to say back. “Thanks you too!” you cried before realising that didn’t make sense at all. “Wait I didn’t mean that, you don’t have to get well because you’re fine...I don’t know why I said that”. Zuko chuckled as your face reddened and he smiled softly “don’t worry it was funny” and he walked away. You breathed in a deep breath before you heard laughing. “Who’s there!” you cried and Sokka and Suki stepped inside the tent from the opposite doorway, laughing hard. “What’s so funny?” you asked and they both smiled widely. “Nothing....we just find it ironic that’s all” Suki smirked and you frowned “what?”. “Well you’ve spent this entire time acting like you were better than us because romance is for losers and then Zuko shows up and you’re the one blushing and laughing at his jokes. “WHAT” you cried “I am not...we’re just friends, we have the same sense of humour and we’re both the eldest so of course we’d gravitate towards one another”. “Sure and that has nothing to do with you finding him attractive? Just a coincidence?” Suki asked. “I don’t find him attractive why would you even say that?”. “Huh guess we were wrong” Suki shrugged “see you around y/n” and they sauntered away.
After the air temple’s position became compromised you moved to a house Zuko’s family-owned and you were greatly enjoying home comforts as opposed to bare caves and temples. So you let your guard down and didn’t see the attack heading straight for you.
“Y/n come quick! Aang’s in trouble!” Suki yelled. You dropped what you were holding and ran as fast as you could into the courtyard. You shot around the corner and narrowly missed getting hit by a jet of fire. You blinked ready to counter the attack when you saw Zuko and Aang staring at you confused. “Y/n? What’s wrong why did you do that I could have hurt you!” Zuko cried and you blinked “Suki said...” you glanced around and saw Suki and Sokka sat on a bench across the yard smirking at you. You were confused why they seemed so smug, all they’d done was made you embarrass yourself in front of everyone, then you realised Zuko wasn’t wearing a shirt. “Suki what was that?” Zuko asked coming to stand in front of you and you looked away “nothing it was just a prank” you cut in hoping Zuko would drop it. Zuko seemed confused but he shrugged much to your relief...then he carried on coming closer. “It's not a funny prank if you get hurt, I didn’t burn you did i?” he asked reaching out for your arm. You moved your arm out of his grasp immediately your cheeks flushing “no i’m fine! Not a scratch on me”. “Are you sure because burns need treating right away or they’ll...”. “I’m fine Zuko” you said sharply and he paused at the harshness of your voice. You immediately felt guilty as Zuko stepped back “okay”. An awkward silence fell and you were getting ready to retreat but Sokka and Suki weren’t done yet. “Hey Zuko didn’t you say you wanted to show y/n how to fight a fire bender given what happened at the prison?” Sokka called. Zuko nodded “I do but i’m training Aang this morning”. “Yeah but maybe we could end it there for today? Honestly I’m exhausted and could use a break” Aang sighed. Zuko frowned looking up at you “well okay but if now doesn’t work for you we could do another time?” Zuko asked timidly and you again felt awful for snapping at him. “Now’s great” you smiled softly and Zuko smiled back making you blush vividly and you heard Sokka and Suki laugh. “Let me know when you’re ready” Zuko told you grabbing a bottle of water and drinking deeply. You watched as some water spilt over and ran down his neck. “You okay there y/n?” Suki asked and you glared going bright red. You marched over to them furiously “you two think you’re so clever but I know exactly what you’re trying to do and it won’t work!”. “Won’t it?” Sokka asked “you’re pretty red y/n, sure you can handle shirtless Zuko?”. You blushed at his word choice making them before erupting into laughter again. “Y/n?” Zuko called and you paused “yeah?”. “We should probably get started soon that way we can get an hour in before the sun becomes too intnese. You nodded and with a last glare came to stand across from Zuko. “So I think the reason Azula’s attack was so successful is because you fought it head on rather than manouvering it, fire is life, it isn’t solid like a rock so you can be more flexible with it, how is your flexibility?”. “My flexibility?” you asked blushing as you heard Sokka break out laughing. “Yeah...” Zuko said confused looking from you to Sokka “good hip and foot movement can really help you dodge attacks”. “Yeah y/n how’s your hip movement?” Sokka called and you glared at him before turning back to Zuko “okay I think...”. Zuko nodded “okay well try dodging some attacks and I’ll give you some tips?”. You nodded and focused on Zuko. You dodged his attacks and Zuko nodded “good but try being lighter on your feet and guard your centre more”. “My centre?”. “Yeah, so you place your arms beside your body but try moving them infront, that way if you need to dodge it’ll be easier”. When you moved your arms confused Zuko smiled “here like this” and he helped place them correctly. You blushed as he reached around you and both Sokka and Suki smirked widely. “Got it?” Zuko asked and you nodded staring straight ahead, pointedly not looking at him “yep”. “And maybe loosen up a bit, you seem tense”. “I wonder why” Suki muttered and you broke stance “okay that’s it...” when Sokka stood up. “Don’t worry we’re going, it seems like you two need some privacy anyway” Sokka smirked “that way you can train more intimately”. “Have fun” Suki grinned “although not too much y/n” she cried winking at you. The door closed and Zuko turned to you “not too much fun?”. “Erm Suki just knows I love training that’s all she meant...shall we begin?”.
You spent most of the day training with Zuko and while it got a lot better when there was no audience, the minute you stopped all your shyness returned. You could barely look at Zuko and just wished he’d for the love of god put on some clothes.
You just finished training as the others returned and they all shot you smirks as they walked past you into the house. Sokka and Suki seemed very smug and you seriously doubted they’d actually gone into the house. You glanced around the yard wondering where they’d think to hide when you realised Zuko was also staring at the house with a frown. You immediately grew worried that he’d gotten suspicious of all their teasing but luckily that wasn’t the case. “Damn I was hoping to sort out all this training stuff before they got back” Zuko said gesturing to the training equipment around you “Sokka really hogs the shower”. You laughed very familiar with Sokka’s intense pamper regime. “Well why don’t I sort all of this?” you asked. Zuko paused “no I can’t make you pack all of this away on your own”. “It’s fine honestly” you assured him “plus if you don’t move now Sokka will be in there for like an hour”. Zuko nodded “that is true...okay, thanks y/n you’re the best”. You smiled blushing slightly “no problem...”. Zuko smiled back “thanks again and good work today” Zuko added before rushing inside.
The second he was gone Sokka and Suki emerged from a hiding spot just like you figured they would. Before they could speak you held up a hand “Don’t even speak”. “What we weren’t going to say anything” Suki smiled “just you look a little red that’s all”. “Yeah good session?” Sokka asked “or did Zuko work you too hard?”. Suki laughed and you glared. “That’s it! If you two won’t quit then fine I admit it! I like Zuko! He’s stubborn and dramatic and has a short temper which are all things I shouldn’t like but I do because I’m the exact same! But he can also be sweet and shy which makes him adorable considering he’s literally royalty. He’s also really funny in his own way and I love how awkward he is. Not to mention how incredibly attractive he is! His hair alone makes me weak but seeing him shirtless and sweaty today...I barely got through training without passing out so are you both happy now? You’ve driven me to insanity with all your teasing! I like Zuko, I’ll admit it because I can’t think of anything else but him!”. Silence settled and Suki went to talk when a small voice asked “you do?”. You turned to see Zuko stood in the doorway with a very confused look on his face. “Zuko....did you hear all of that?”. Zuko nodded “I forgot my shirt so I came back...you like me?”. You blushed “kind of...” but when Zuko frowned you sighed “I mean yes, I like you...but I don’t expect anything in return I mean you’ve got so much on your plate right now and I know you just saw Mai...”. Zuko didn’t talk or even react to what you said he just stared down at the floor thinking. “Zuko?” you asked after the most uncomfortable seconds of your life passed “please say something”. Zuko sighed “I don’t know what to say...I mean we get along well and you’re all of those things you said about me and more but I think I need time to work out how I feel, is that okay?”. “That’s totally fine take as long as you need” you nodded and Zuko nodded “thanks y/n” and walked away. Zuko left and Sokka and Suki looked at you “Y/n we’re so sorry!” they both burst. “We didn’t plan that at all we just wanted to tease you a little bit we promise” Suki cried. “Exactly! I’ll go explain it all to Zuko about how we pushed you to say all that” Sokka offered and you sighed. “No it’s okay...I mean he was bound to figure it out eventually, it’s probably better he knows I guess”. “Y/n we’re really sorry is there anything we can do?” Suki asked and you shook your head. “It wasn’t your fault and actually all this teasing has made me think. I was rude and cruel to both of you before so i’m the one who should apologise to you. I made fun of you just because I have a different idea of what a relationship looks like but that doesn’t make yours any less valid. I should never have teased you guys for showing affection just because I’m not like that. I’ve been an awful friend...can you ever forgive me?”. “Of course we can!” Sokka cried and Suki nodded “we knew you never meant any harm”. “I know but actions matter more than intentions so I’m really sorry”. “Hey if you can forgive us for outing you to your crush then we can forgive you for teasing us” Sokka said hugging you and Suki joined in “what are friends for?”. You still felt utterly humiliated but at least you had your friends to comfort you.
As time passed and Zuko never mentioned that day to you again you figured his silence spoke louder than any words. He didn’t return your feelings and that was fine. You understood Zuko didn’t have to like you back or want anything more with you just because you got on well. You respected his friendship enough to not be bitter or rude to him for his choice. All you wanted was for him to be happy and if that was with Mai or another person then you were happy.
You put everything in the past and managed to win the war. Aang defeated Ozai and Zuko, with Katara’s considerable help, defeated Azula becoming Firelord. You were so proud of all your friends and stayed in the fire nation for a while to celebrate. Things had been awkward between you and Zuko at first but now they were back to normal and you were pleased your friendship had survived. You hoped to remain good friends with Zuko and thought that seemed likely even with your encroaching departure.
One day before you were due to leave Zuko found you in a spot in the palace you liked to read in. “Zuko” you said surprised “what brings you in here? I thought you had Firelord things all day?”. “I did but I heard you were leaving and I need to speak to you, can we talk?”. You were instantly confused and nervous but nodded standing up “okay...”. Zuko led you to an empty study and closed the door. He was breathing very quickly and was playing with his hands nervously. “Zuko are you okay...” you started when he cut you off.  “I like you” Zuko said suddenly and you froze “you do...but it’s been so long since...are you sure? If it took you this long to come to the realisation maybe you’re just feeling pressured? Zuko I won’t be angry if you don’t like me”. “No that’s not why it took so long” Zuko assured you “I knew I liked you the day I heard you say all those things about me”. “You did?” you asked and Zuko nodded “well really I knew long ago but after hearing you say it I thought about it and realised I liked you too. But y/n we were living in as fugitives with the odds stacked against us. Any of us could have died or been captured, our future was so uncertain that I didn’t want to start anything in such an unstable situation. So i waited, I thought I’d wait until after the war and see what happened. By some miracle we all won and I became Firelord” he said as if the very idea was still hard for him to get used to. “As soon as the war was over I wanted to tell you but I barely got a second alone with you so I kept putting it off for the perfect moment. I didn’t want it to be rushed or forced but I took too long and so when I heard you were leaving tomorrow I knew I had to tell you. Please tell me it’s not too late and I haven’t ruined everything?”. You shook your head “no Zuko, you haven’t ruined anything”. “So...you still like me?” he asked cautiously and you rolled your eyes. “I may not be overly affectionate but don’t let that fool you, everything I said about you is still true”. “Really?” Zuko said blushing “because you said a lot of stuff i’m sure other people wouldn’t think”. “Well it’s their loss” you smiled and Zuko smiled too “and my gain I guess” taking your hand. “I’d like to think so yes” you agreed and Zuko chuckled before touching your cheek softly. He leant in to kiss you and you closed your eyes. You kissed him back and separated after a few seconds. You laughed softly under your breath and shook your head. “What is it?” Zuko asked “laughing isn’t usually a good response after a first kiss”. “No it’s not you, it’s just Sokka and Suki are going to be so smug after this”. Zuko laughed “let them” and leant in to kiss you again.
Sokka and Suki were indeed smug but you didn’t care. Zuko was more than enough compensation.

Look What We Had, Now It’s Turned to Ash (Zuko x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Zuko x Gender Neutral Reader Rating: PG-13 Words: 773 POV: Second Summary: Zuko abandoned the Fire Nation and with it, his lover-not-quite-partner. All he left you was a lame note. It was the last straw. Note: No one asked for this, but I was thinking of that one Princess Mononoke scene and then this started playing, so here it is. Tags: song fic, drabble, angst, canon-typical violence, reader is a firebender, takes place during start of The Ember Island Players and this is probs OOC but who cares
Everything for the Fire Nation. Your momma had taught you that; your dad had enforced it. It was in your heritage, in your blood, in your love for the Firelord’s son. The latter just happened over the years and it did not diminish during Zuko’s quest for the Avatar. The fire in your heart burned for him, even when he was a fugitive. Then he was back and just as quickly as he had returned, he had left again with only a lame letter to remind you of him. After Azula failed to capture him, you took it in your own hands to track down the one that got away before you even officially had something.
Everything for the Fire Nation. Everything, except accept the facts. There was no way Zuko had teamed up with the Avatar, but when you saw him just chilling on Ember Island, teaching the Avatar to firebend out of all things, your blood boiled hotter than the water in the Boiling Rock. “Zuko!” You roared as you stood tall on the rooftop of the Firelord’s island home. “You traitor!”
You leaped down, throwing down fire at the man you used to love. He called out your name, trying to get you to stop attacking and talk, but you had already made the courtyard your battlefield. “Just let me explain,” he yelled while blocking your attacks. The others in the courtyard were told to stand down. Your anger boiled over at his arrogance. He could have the Avatar aid him in this fight, but apparently he thought he could handle you on his own.
“You betrayed your nation! You turned your back on your friends, your family…” You bared your teeth at him, when he caught your fists and held them between your sweating bodies. “You turned your back on me.” You inhaled, planning on making his eyes match, but he pushed you away and dodged the fire coming from your mouth.
“I’m just trying to do the right thing,” he replied, while still going fist-to-fist with you. “I want peace between the nations. You won’t have to lose anyone else to this war. I want to… protect you.”
Your vision was blinded with the fire coming from your hands and the tears dripping down your cheeks. He was so calmly lying right to your face. “Oh yes, I have read your letter.” You chased him around the fountain. “I have made many bad choices, but loving you was never one,” you mimicked his voice as you followed him inside the house. Walls and doors crumbled at your fury. “And because I love you, I want you to live in a world of peace. Bla bla, bottom line you’re a sickly coward and a traitor!”
You ran into the room you saw Zuko disappear into, just to find it empty aside from a big, luxurious bed and an old dresser. You walked up to the bed, thinking he hid behind or underneath it, but just as you stepped through, you felt someone jump onto you from the ceiling. You wrestled, until Zuko had you pinned on the floor, face down with your hands held behind your back. “I’m only doing what I think is right!” He defended himself once more with that lame excuse.
“I was there when you got that ugly scar! I was the first to touch and take care of it! I wrote to you throughout your entire exile! Is it right to play with my feelings like that and then leave me after all those years?” You squirmed, trying to get free from his grip. You turned your head, the image of him blurred by your tears filled with acrimony and heartache.
His shoulders fell, but you couldn’t see the expression on his face. “You’re right, it is not fair, but I really meant what I said in my letter.” You felt that he let his guard down and took the opportunity to switch the roles. In a few swift moves, you had him on his back with his hands pinned above his head and you on top of his chest.
“You talk too much,” you said as you engulfed your hand in flames and held it up. “I should just burn your whole face off, that’ll shut you up.” Rage coursed through your veins, when you found no fear, grief nor hatred on his face. He stared up at you, brows furrowed. Then his expression changed. The soft smile forced your heart to beat for him once more and with just a few words, he had you wrapped around his finger again.
“You’re beautiful.”

Heyyy, I absolutely love your Zuko fics!
Could you do a Zuko x reader where the reader is Zuko’s childhood friend and a firebender but decided to never bend again after the Agni Kai? And then there is some hurt/comfort after they reunite with Zuko trying to show the reader the beautiful side of firebending?

An: HIYA! LET'S PRETEND I DIDN’T DISAPPEAR LOL. Anyways thank you for the request loveee <33 (and for the compliments <3)
Summary:
I’m too lazy just read the request man
Warnings: hurt/comfort I guess, ants (?), that’s basically it.
Tumblr media
Even as a firebender, there were few times you actually felt warm. Maybe the heat regulations in your body defected, or maybe it was just the essence of the flame itself - one that was proven time and time again to bring destruction and calamity to the people around he who beholds it.
Sure, the agni kai was traumatising, that’s no light and easy topic, but it really showed the complete and utter chaos power can hammer into someone. Power, and fire. Ever since that effervescent hue of danger filled reds and oranges kissed the skin of Zuko, things just weren’t the same. You could no longer even muster the courage to bring up a flame. Something as simple as boiling water for tea, or heating the cooker for some broth felt agonisingly difficult. Your parents assumed it to be a phase of your life, a mental state you put yourself in to be rebellious. But truly, you couldn’t firebend.
When you joined team avatar, you made it clear that under no circumstances would you even think about producing that horrid warmth, and surprisingly enough, they didn’t push. You and Sokka bonded quite a lot over being non-benders, because to them, you were. You weren’t the child who disappointed the king of the nation by refusing to be an extension of his likeness, you were just a non-bender. There was no association with you and the blazes. You were safe from it.
Safe.
Today didn’t feel very safe though, it felt extra chilly almost. Your friends all stood on the opposite side as your former best friend, weapons at the ready, guards higher than ever.
“Hello Zuko here,”
Mixed feelings. You didn’t know what this was. Perhaps you saw red at the villain, or you saw blue at the mistreated child, or maybe yellow at the glimmer of hope. Through this haze of colour though, you saw something else. You saw Zuko. As much as it was corny and cheesy to even think about, that was Zuko. Not prince Zuko, not firelord’s son Zuko - just the Zuko. Chills ran laps down your spine, suddenly feeling light headed and nauseous. You were letting your guard down. You shuddered at the thought, and Katara tilted her head from her position.
“Just cold,” you smiled softly, but it didn’t quite reach your eyes.
There was just something she couldn’t read, like a cliff-hanger in a novel, or a hint in a riddle. But there was a task at hand, a task that needed to be dealt with.
And you thought it was, and it was over. But you were wrong.
The time came for you to pick whether the boy would join the team. Anxiously, you looked at your friends, the decision being a tough one at best.
“Well okay,” you mumbled.
Aang smiled and welcomed Zuko into the team.
You would say the day was rather mundane after that, but the next one was most definitely not. Zuko and Aang disappeared, which caused you to go off on a rampage on how much you hate Zuko and how you knew this would happen and Katara backed you up all the way through. Well that was until Sokka decided to voice his observation,
“This seems more personal than him just attacking us.”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know. You’re not usually this mad about something, you didn’t even want Azula to die. Azula.”
“Just uh mad, i guess.” you mumbled, folding your arms defensively.
And then Zuko took Sokka on a field trip, and the day after they came back, you thought finally things were gonna die down. Wrong.
Azula made her grand appearance, almost taking your life before you could even blink your eyes awake. Most of the fight was a blur of fire, but you managed to just catch when Zuko practically tackled Katara to get her away from the danger zone, and her sour reaction to him. You felt a pit in your stomach, an annoyed look on your face.
Zuko instructed everyone to leave, claiming this was a family thing. But you would be stupid if you let him get credit for this. He began his sprint before you, but you reached faster, a different kind of fire behind your gaze.
Your feet gracefully left the landing, and you pulled out a pocket knife, utilising its sharpness in order to slit a massive hole in the air balloon just above the battle. You dropped with a grunt onto the battle ground, trying to stabilise yourself.
“Well well well, if it isn’t little Yn! What? Still don’t use your fire?” She asked, blasting a bright flame in your direction.
You dodged almost effortlessly, a sigh as you rolled your eyes, “it’s okay, just trying to give you a winning chance, Zula.” You smirked.
She frowned, grunting as she blasted more fire at you. Zuko took the opportunity to blast some from behind, but she caught it, unintentionally miscalculating where you were, so her fire sprayed in another direction. You dodged anyways, muscle memory kicking in, accidentally landing where her fire was. The closeness of the heat scared you, although it didn't hurt, the shock itself was enough to cause you to stumble back. Back and off. You heard Zuko yell your name but it was blocked out by the mass amount of air whizzing past your ears. You tried to stick your knife into anything, hoping to grapple yourself up, but no, you just continued to fall. You thought you might pass out, hopefully before you hit the ground, but then something caught you. Sokka tugged your arm so you would fall onto Appa’s saddle, and you immediately laid down, nervous giggles escaping as you hyperventilated. You weren’t really concentrating, but you heard Zuko’s voice nearby soon after, and immediately sat up, shuffling to the furthest corner from him.
Azula survived, but part of you was relieved. You weren’t ready to just witness a murder. You will however now be in a cramped space with that supid firebender for an undisclosed amount of time.
“Are you okay?” he said, a rasp in his voice.
“I’m fine.” you replied, coldly.
He sighed, nodding.
Once you got to your destination, that night he, again, took someone on a field trip - Katara. You were dying to hear her say she still didn’t trust him, but it was the opposite, she did trust him. It was just you now.
That brings us to today, the group all sat by a bonfire at ember island, passing food around. Zuko came to join you, only to find the only empty seat next to you. When he sat, you completely ignored him, not even sparing a glance towards his side.
“Yn,” he whispered, only loud enough for you to hear, there was a tint of desperosity behind his tone, it ached your heart to see him like this, the urge to just reach out and hug him looming just behind the urge to punch his stupid face.
Toph however, tuned you both in when she noticed your heightened heartbeat, eavesdropping shamelessly.
“What,” you said, not even turning to look.
“Can we talk?”
You turned to look at him, a scowl on your face, “No.” plain, and simple.
He frowned, a hurt look on his features, “Yn,”
You got up immediately, dusting yourself off before storming off.
“What’s up with her?” Katara asked.
“Familiar?” Toph replied, referencing the similar scenario that occurred the day before, in which Katara was in your shoes.
Said girl rolled her eyes annoyedly.
“Do you know, Zuko?” The avatar asked, but Zuko got up abruptly and followed you, mumbling ‘I think so’.
The firebender followed your footsteps, and found that they came to a halt near the entrance of a cave. Slowly, he pushed the vines to the side. There you were, knees to your chest, arms crossed.
“May I.. May I come in?”
You rested your head against the damp grey rock wall, your eyes never leaving the moss coloured roofing, “Okay,”
The prince’s steps neared you, before his body carefully slumped down next to you, an extremely small gap between you two.
“Are you cold?” and suddenly you were twelve again.
And suddenly you were hiding under your bed, with Zuko trying to talk you into a good mood after you got lectured by your parents. He crawled under the bed to see you more clearly, although he realised it was darker once he got there. His face was inches away from your tear soaked one.
Your body stood alight with goosebumps, and he took notice once his arm fell upon your bicep area.
“Are you cold?”
You nodded, and he made a small fire in his palm, careful not to let his bed go up in flames. He smiled once he saw your face, and you smiled back. Then, you began to laugh, and so did he, and the fire went out, and you laughed some more. Your stomachs hurt, but you both really didn’t know why it was so funny. It just was.
“A little,” you replied, coldly.
Slowly, a heat formed, creeping gently around his hand as he toyed with it.
“I-”
“Don’t.”
Your vision glossed over, and yet, no reaction.
“Yn,”
You slowly turned your head towards him, still resting it on the wall, but your eyes never seemed to leave the flame burning in his pale palm.
“What do you want, Zuko?” but it didn’t sound like a question - although it was - it came out as more of an insult, like his name alone was so taboo that it was degrading.
He paused, and you turned to face the far wall again, sighing. The boy chewed on his lip nervously, trying to find a reason to ask his next request.
“Yn, give me your hand, please,”
You furrowed your brows, eyes jumping to your fingers. It was so cold, it felt like your fingertips would fall off, you only realised how icey they felt when you tried to move them. You winced, it hurt to try to articulate.
Hesitantly, you put your hands out, and he neared his to yours. The glow of the fire flowed as your hands collided, remaining in his, but oh so close to yours. You gasped.
“Trust me, it won’t hurt,”
Then it touched you, you squished your eyes shut, waiting for the electricity to run through you.
“Zuko,” you said shakily, feeling dizzy.
“Yn,” he replied, smiling softly - you could tell from his tone.
Slowly, you opened your eyes, and there it was, a tiny heartbeat dancing in your hands. When you looked up, mouth agape, Zuko’s eyes were fixated onto you, his smile reaching his eyes. Genuine was what you would call it.
And then, your fingers thawed, and moving was a lot easier. It felt like a new door was open, a world of never ending possibilities awaiting, all arising from a simple yellow. You tilted your head to the side a little watching it move, feeling shy under the prince’s gaze.
“I’m sorry I left you,” you nodded, never making eye contact with him, for fear of a drop slipping from the bars you’ve set in your eyes, because he shouldn't see you cry,
“I was an awful person, to say the least.” you hummed, a smile at his self recognition, “But, there was never a moment when I was on the ship where I didnt think of you.” he swallowed thickly, and you finally locked eyes with him, the flame failing to stay alight.
His hands were still guiding yours, never mind the fact that there wasn’t anything anymore.
“I’ve made lots of mistakes, I think I’ve made every mistake at that,” he took a deep breath, his face becoming more flushed, “I think the greatest one was losing you.”
Your face contorted into a frown, like a child who just got denied a new toy, and you looked down, shaking your head.
“I’m sorry yn, I really am,”
His words ran in your skull, and through tear filled eyes, you hugged him. You hugged him really tight. At that moment, you two were kids again, reunited after a week apart because you were grounded. You sobbed into his shoulder, and he gripped tightly, scared if he were to let go, this would all be a dream, and you wouldn’t be within his reach.
“It’s okay Zuko, I forgive you.” you leaned back, and held his face in your hands, a smile on your face.
And then maybe it was the wind in his hair, or the blush on his cheeks, or the tears that threatened to fall from his eyes, but you felt compelled to him. Like a magnetic force was pulling you two together. You rested your forehead against his, and he shut his eyes, sighing heavily as he tried to bite back the waterworks.
Opening his eyes again, he gently brushed his lips against yours, testing the waters, testing his place. He stared at you, gauging your reaction from his place against your forehead. You furrowed your brows, pulling him back against your lips in a more passionate kiss.
To him, it was like the everything aligned for him, like colour reappeared in his dull world haunted by the ghosts of his past. His heart pounded in his chest, his lips moving in sync to yours. It felt like it lasted forever, if he were to die due to the lack of oxygen right now, he’s not even sure he would care, for his spirit wouldn’t be vengeful at all. The actual act of affection was cut short by a rustle outside of the hauntingly cold cove, thinking it was someone you may know. You moved back and sat next to him, against the wall again. And then, you dropped your head onto his shoulder with a sigh.
“This doesn’t change anything, you know,”
He laughed, “Sure,”
You hit him on the chest, gently enough that it doesn't hurt, but hard enough so that he can feel it.
“I’m serious!” The beaming smile on your face was a contradiction.
He smiled, resting his head against the wall, mimicking your previous sitting style. Zuko stuck his hand out, and you took it, squeezing it tightly.
Although the cave was cold, damp, and falling apart, much like how you were before - it was also warm, soft, and strong, and maybe that’s how you felt.
But maybe it was even weirder to compare yourself to a cave full of ants.

My requests are always always always open :3
-
It was getting late. Zuko was aware of that, but he had biggest problems than returning to the palace.
She had run off, again. She was naive, at least in Zuko's eyes. The way her gaze always caught onto surrounding things, entrapped her little mind, always intrigued Zuko. Only a few moments ago, she had seen a man walking with a cart full of random items. He couldn't make it out what exactly was in the cart before she ran off behind the quickly paced man.
An now Zuko stood confused and worried, wondering if she was okay,
The hustle and bustle of the Fire Nation plaza wasn't helping Zuko's worried mind. His eyes latched onto groups of children playing and running around, a small boy tugging on his mothers arm towards a fire flakes stand. The firelord messed with the hem of his clothing, trying to make sure he wasn't recognizable. He loved hanging out with (Y/N), but spirits was it a pain getting recognized by fans and enemies alike.
During their little hang outs, Zuko would let his hair down out of the royal bun that usually accompanied his formal attire. It was reasonably long, so his bangs would cover up most of the scar on his face,
Whenever somebody would question the burn though, he had funny excuses that would make the girl he adored laugh,
"You have the same scar as Firelord Zuko!" A young woman would exclaim, and Zuko would act casual, stating,
-"his scar is on the wrong side."
-"Firelord who-ko?"
-"Mines a birthmark."
or, his personal favorite,
-"No I dont."
His quips always made her let out a little giggle, pulling him along to look at the newly opened shops. He wished that she was dragging him along now instead of running off through the thick and busy streets.
As his gaze scanned through the people around him, his eyes caught into something. He felt the breath he didn't know he was holding release at the sight of the sparkling gem that adorned her bun, glistening from the setting sun. It seemed to be the color of maroom; perhaps a fire gem, a ruby, garnet, or some other red jewel Zuko couldn't name off the top of his head.
"(Y/N)!" He called walking forward and breathing in sharply. He turned to the side, muttering out small, 'excuse me's as he passed by a group of giggling women. Zuko reached out, placing his hand on the shoulder of (Y/N).
She turned around, her lips parted softly in surprise. She looked up through the metal frames of her oval glasses. Her lashes flickered as she rendered in the sight of the man next to her.
"Oh, hello Zu-" She paused, looking around. "I mean Lee." (Y/N) always tried her best to make sure she kept Zuko's identity a secret, so she called him Lee. It was the name that his uncle had called him all those years ago in that in Ba Sing Se, and now he had regifted it to himself. It was simple enough, and there were enough Lee's in the city that he wasn't as memorable.
"Where have you been?" He asked, a worried expression on his pale face. His brows were knitted together, a crease between the hills of his brows. He squeezed her shoulder.
"Oh, I saw an old friend!" She smiled, turning back to the man that was behind her. "Lee, meet Yamitsa. Yamitsa, meet Lee."
Zuko's stare flickered up to the boy behind her. He had dark brown hair that was sighed back in a wolf bun, similar to his friend Sokka's. Though, his was more grown out and messier than the water tribe boy's. He was short and had a round face, carrying a satchel while his palms were on the handles of a cart full of what seemed to be relics.
"His family runs an antique store down the road." (Y/N) explain, her hand limply gesturing to Yamitsa. "I used to go to school with him."
Unknown to Zuko, his grip tightened on the girls shoulder. His hand slid down to her bicep, fingers kneading the soft flesh.
"That sounds.. nice." Zuko said, trying to sound polite. "Let's go, it's getting late." He suggested, pulling (Y/N) slightly.
She glanced back, her eyes flickering from Zuko's squinted eyes and his brkad shoulders. She smiled. (Y/N) waved at Yamitsa.
"I'll see you around!" She said kindly, smiling as Zukomoulled her along.
His grip never left.
Zuko watched the hustle and bustle of the fire nation as the sun set, stores flipping their 'open' signs to closed. Mothers dragged their children home, husband's tired from their long day of work. Some kids still played in the center of the plaza, running around or playing with a ball.
The grasp on her arm slowly turned into the two having their arms interlinked. (Y/N) dragged him along behind her as they weaved through the streets.
Zuko followed her, letting out a content sigh as he took in the bustling plaza. He never thought he would see the day when the Fire Nation was at peace. "It's amazing, isn't it?" He comments, watching a group of children laughing and playing nearby.
(Y/N) nodded, smiling softly. The golden hour showered over her face, her eyes cascading to the side away from Zuko.
Zuko notices her gaze and looks over to see the yellow-orange sun peeking through the alleys between dark oak buildings, delving beneath the horizon. He can't help but feel a sense of warmth in his chest as he takes in the beautiful sight. "It's so beautiful," He murmurs, stepping closer to (Y/N).
You're so beautiful, his mind says. Zuko wished he had the confidence to make his thoughts into meaningful words.
Zuko's gaze flickered down to her, a nervous heat crossing his face. A strand of hair that had fallen from her bun blew serenely, dancing along the wind. It was beautiful, how human she was. He never realized how much euphoria prospered from the mere sight of watching a sun set on a summer evening, but she did. She knew things that he probably never would.
"Yeah.." (Y/N) whispered softly, looking back at him. Her voice caught him off guard. Zuko was so lost in thought, in the sea of her eyes that shone from just the simplest light, "Let's go, before it gets dark. My aunt won't be happy if I'm home late."
Her arm slipped from his as (Y/N) began to skip forward down the pavement.
Zuko nods in agreement and allows you to lead him towards the palace. The soft clicking of their shoes against the stone brick pavement of the city filled both their ears, accompanied by the simple but amazing sound of life.
"Hey, slow down," He calls playfully, a smile spreading across his face. (Y/N) turns back, her eyes closed as she smiled widely, and the world seemed to move in slow motion for just that moment.
Zuko chuckles and rolls his eyes before picking up his pace to catch up with her. As he reaches her side, he grabs her hand in his and gives it a gentle squeeze.
"You're impossible," He teases, his eyes shining with amusement. He feels their hands interlock together, fingers intertwining messily. Zuko felt that familiar flutter fill his stomach, making him smile and turn red.
Then their gaze met in a graceful yet intense stare, wide smiles stretching across their faces.
The shadow of the palace overlooked their stances, almost blending in with the shadows of the night. It was as if there was a magnetic pull between the two, since Zuko felt himself creeping closer to her. He wanted to hold her, take down her hair and run his fingers through it, and wanted to keep her close.
"Zuzu!" A light voice called from above. Zuko turned away from (Y/N), the breaking of eye contact making his heart shatter. He looked around, then up at a high place in the palace. Then he saw her.
"Spirits.." Zuko muttered under his breath, shaking his head and turning to face (Y/N). He opened his eyes, only to be met with (Y/N)'s amused grin.
Azula was leaning out of the window, a cheeky grin on her pale face. Zuko groaned, squeezing his eyes shut in exasperation.
"Oh Zuzu!" She called again, tauntingly waving her fingers. She then leaned her face on her palm, the elbow of that arm leaning on the windowsill.
Azula had been released from the psych ward only a few weeks ago. She had been staying in the palace under the guard of soldiers. She was never left alone, other than in the restroom and in the security of her room. Zuko had many responsibilities as the firelord, and Azula thought it was terribly hilarious to bother him.
"Zuzu, huh?" She laughed,
