Lancaster: Love is the Best Gift

(Summary: Ruby went out on a solo mission but went missing presumed KIA, Jaune was devastated as he was hugging his 3 year old son Garnet who doesn't know whats going on. 2 years later they went out on a Father and Son Camping Trip on the same day of Ruby's Death)

Garnet woke up feeling thirsty so he got up and grabbed his toy bear that his mother made for him when he was 2 before she went missing, he climbed out of the tent yawning when he heard someone sniffed. He stopped and turned to see his father back turned facing the fire. His dad sniffed again, he was about to ask if his dad was sick but before he could say a word his father turned and saw him.

Jaune: Son *he quickly turned to wipe his tears so his son doesn't see them, and turns back to Garnet* you should be asleep

Garnet: I was thirsty

Jaune takes a bit to gather himself and hold his hands out to his son: C'mere

Garnet quickly went to his father and Jaune lifts him up and put him on his lap, he reaches into his bag and pulled out a bottle of water and carefully helps his son take a drink. After his son drunk some water he grabbed a long stick and let his son grabbed the stick with him so they both poked some sticks in the fire.

Garnet: Dad

Jaune turns and smiles at his son

Garnet looked at his father as they both stopped poking the fire

Garnet: Are you gonna get us a new mom?

Jaune's smile dropped as he hugged his son close and kissed his head: I don't want another, your mom was the only woman for me

Jaune smiled and held his son close as they both looked at the fire: She was the love of my life

Jaune: But with love comes loss son, it's part of the deal. Some times it hurts but in the end *he looks at his son and smiles* it's all worth it.

Jaune lifts his son and puts him on his other knee as they both looked at each other

Jaune: There's no greater gift than love

Jaune and Garnet smiled at each other

Jaune gets up holding his son close: Now let's get back in the tent and get some sleep.

But what they both don't know is there in the distance watching the whole thing was no other than Ruby with tears flowing out like a water fall and her scroll recording the whole thing she was touched as she heard what her husband said. She mentally curses Ozpin with every fiber of her being for making her fake her death and wishing she could just quit this fucking mission and go back to her family

Ruby sobbing: Don't worry my loves, I will finish this mission as soon as I can. And when I do I will gladly retire for good and come back to you both. I promise

Ruby puts away her scroll, wipes her tears and walks away very determined to get this over with and retire, Fuck what the world wants because the only thing she wants now is to be with her family again and she will personally kill every Council member if she has to.

Ruby pulled out her scroll replaying Jaune's speech to thier son listening and hanging on to every word.

She pulls out a family picture they took together when Garnet was only a year old, she kisses the picture with a passion.

Neptune: Yeah there's no way we're getting anything on that thing's "barrel" anytime soon. But, I did give him some tips on how a railgun functions!

Garnet: Yep! Oh and it doesn't have a guandao transformation, as much as they're similar to scythes they aren't my thing. AND I got too many modes in my baby already!

So one of the cool and interesting ways ‘Steven Universe’ used to try and balance being both a series of 11-minutes episodes that each have their own satisfying emotional resolution and being an overarching story with complicated character arcs that take multiple seasons to resolve is the… I’m going to call it the ‘Not Quite Right Lesson’ episodes. Episodes where a character kinda learns a Very Important Lesson… but a more careful and retrospective look at the situation shows that what they learned is not Quite the Right Thing for them. They internalized something in that adventure which just ended up causing more Emotional Troubles for themselves farther down the line.

‘The Test’ is the most classic example. 

As a standalone thing, it’s just a sweet episode about Steven learning to accept that his caretakers are also flawed and confused and figuring this shit up as they’re going along just like he is, and then doing a nice thing for their sake.

But looking back at this episode, it is quite obviously the nadir of Steven appointing himself as the Family Therapist and repressing all of his problems so he could better help the Gems’ with theirs. Like, there have been some early warning signs for this Complex, but this episode is the one that really cemented that idea in his mind and probably the reason it took him like the Entire Rest of the Show Including a Post-Finale Season to really untangle it.

But… also, I’ve been thinking a lot about the episode right after that, ‘Future Vision’. I think it’s also a very important ‘Not Quite Right Lesson Episode’ for the character of Garnet, and to some extent, the Crystal Gems as a whole. In many ways, it is to the CGs' character arcs' what 'the Test' is to Steven's.

So in this episode, Garnet reveals to Steven the fact that she has Future Vision. She hoped that telling Steven a little bit more about herself and being honest with him will lead to a greater understanding and a greater bond between them… but it backfired. It just led Steven to become a total paranoid, terrified wreck stuck in a total existential crisis.

And it seems like the lesson Garnet learned is that… she should’ve never taken that risk at all. That it would’ve been better for everyone if she just kept Steven ignorant of the truth forever.

Extremely reinforced with the ending of the episode, where Garnet chooses to once again hide an uncomfortable truth (that he just came very close to dying again) from Steven, for the sake of his own ‘peace of mind’.

So, like, the Gems were already hiding uncomfortable truths from Steven since day one. “If you could only know what we really are” and all of that. But I think… With the actual truth of Homeworld encroaching on them more and more at this point of the story arc, this would’ve been a great time for the Gems to reconsider their attitude and actually Explain to Steven What the Hell is Going On. 

But instead, I think Garnet saw the events of ‘Future Vision’ as a reinforcement of the idea that there’s just some things Steven is Better Off Not Knowing. Actually being frank with him about Homeworld and the Diamonds and the War right there and then, that would have just overwhelmed Steven with fears and worries and would’ve ended up doing nothing but hurting him. And Garnet can’t accept that possibility, not again.

And so, Garnet, alongside Amethyst and Pearl, keep all these truths from Steven as long as possible. Only revealing bits of information when they have to. For Amethyst it’s about her emotionally-evasive attitude (also, she legit doesn’t know all of that stuff herself). For Pearl it’s about how she learned to romanticize Rose’s own fucked-up obsession with secrets. For Garnet, with her usually very direct attitude and preference for the most straightforward solutions, I think it’s very much the events of ‘Future Vision’ that were still playing in her head every time she had the choice to actually Explain something to Steven and decided not to. 

But that, indeed, was Not Quite the Right Lesson. While being bluntly and directly told by Garnet all about the Many Ways He Could Die caused Steven to go into an anxiety spiral and an existential crisis for an episode - the way the Gems have been consistently secretive and evasive with Steven ended up causing him so much more emotional grief to him in the long run. As all of these secrets ended up revealed to him in the most surprising, dramatic and traumatizing way possible.

And the secretive attitudes ended up driving a wedge between Steven and the Gems. 

Even after they promised to be more honest with him. Because the sight of Steven crying on the roof that day is one that Garnet can easily move away from. Because Garnet’s Not Quite Right Lesson was almost as difficult for her to unlearn as Steven’s own. 

But after the big confrontation at the start of the Zoo Arc, Garnet ended up being the most upfront about the Crystal Gems’ history. Almost overeager to share what she knows about the past.

I mean also, again, Amethyst just has less to tell and Pearl is hiding secrets for reasons beyond her control - but I think it’s also important to consider from the perspective of Garnet’s arc.

Because the fallout of the Pink Diamond Reveal is very much centered around Garnet (or, well, Ruby and Sapphire). That was the Truth that was hidden from her 'for her own good'. And at the end of the day, despite all the grief that unveiling that truth has caused

It has also brought them, all of them, a lot closer.

There's a reason why 'the Truth' is Garnet's Final Missing Piece in the movie. It is as central to her character arc in the series as Lesbian AngstTM grief over lost love is to Pearl.

And still, some remnants of the Trauma of 'Future Vision' remained...

After all, even the very last episode of 'Future' was centered around the Gems once again trying to hide things from Steven (at that case, their turmoil about him leaving) for his own sake

Even though it once again just caused Steven a whole lot of grief.

It's maybe notable that at the end of this episode, Garnet, once again, tells Steven what's waiting for him in his Future...

Distance

It was a hot summer day in Vacou. The sun was at its peak and the air filled with sand. Ruby, fully grown, staggered into her home after patrol. Why her and Jaune chose to build their house on the outskirts above the kingdom she’ll never know. Well…she does know. It’s strategic, but sucked on days like these.

The tired rose slumped down at her dining table. She missed when her birthday meant autumn leaves and crisp air. Now it’s just hot! She put her weapon down by her side as she heard footsteps and tiny noises from the kitchen. Jaune appeared from her left with their second child, Garnet, waving with his tiny hands. The two year looked half asleep.

Ruby:Hi baby.

Garnet:Sleepy…

Ruby:Me too.

Jaune:Rough day?

Ruby:Not really? Just a little distracted I guess.

Jaune:…Carmine?

Ruby:Yeah. It just…I’m used to her being here. She hasn’t responded to my text.

Jaune:Maybe she’s busy?

Ruby:Busy hating me.

Jaune:Hey now, birthday girls need to be happy or it’s bad luck.

Garnet:What’s wrong with mommy?

Jaune:She misses sissy. She’s far away remember? Getting really strong to be a hero.

The knight went up stairs with his baby waving goodbye. Ruby had more than enough energy to get up and quickly kiss his sleepy forehead. As she sat back down, a knock at the door came. Sighing, she dashed over to open the door; finding a startled delivery man and a brown box.

Mailman:Ruby Rose?

Ruby:…..

Mailman:You’re right. Silly question. I can see all the petals and…please sign.

Ruby:*signing* I’m just tired. I’m sorry.

Mailman:Oh I know it! I just walked up here normally.

Ruby:Yeaaaah. My bad.

She gave a polite wave and went back inside with a package with Ozcar’s seal on it. Probably to put any worry at ease of it being a trap. Her eyes grew wide. Jaune walked back down stairs.

Jaune:What’s that?

Ruby:I package from Beacon.

Jaune:Think it’s from Carmine?

Ruby:Can’t imagine anyone else, but I don’t know what she’d send. I’m surprised she sent anything.

Jaune:She doesn’t hate you. Both of you just…disagree right now. Anyways, open it up

Ruby:Scythe please.

Jaune:Rubes…

Ruby:Yeah you’re right.

She grabs his sword off his hip. He doesn’t even react. Jaune should’ve seen it coming. The oversized box cutter sliced the tap. Inside was quite the treat. A bunch of leaves for cushioning a box of cake mix, a fake Jack-o lantern with her crest in it, and a letter in Carmine’s handwriting. That became the most important thing immediately. The message, like the present, was unexpected.

“Hey Mom. I tried this whole letter thing. I’m bad at it. Stared at the paper for hours. So instead just open the top of the lantern. Your daughter, Carmine Arc Rose. P.S. Those leaves are from grandpa’s yard.”

Jaune:Your dad put her to work?

Ruby:I wouldn’t be surprised.

She turned the lantern upside and for it’s contents to fall out. An audible gasp when a glowing red rose fell out. Ruby couldn’t believe her eyes. She couldn’t even move as her body become anxious. Jaune took the lead by lifting the rose.

Ruby:Wait! I…what do I say?

Jaune:Say the truth. You can’t get it wrong if it’s the truth.

He crushed the top of the rose then tossed it to the living room where it burst! Red and yellow petals swirled beautifully before coming together in the shape of their fourteen year old daughter.

Ruby could only watch as the clone got it’s bearings. It had almost been a year. Her had gotten longer, nearly at her shoulders. Not to mention she’s gained a few inches. Ruby could tell right away. Nearly fifteen soon yet already changing so fast, and Ruby was missing it. Through pride, morals, and pure difference of emotions, Ruby had refused to teach her daughter fighting anymore. So Carmine left for a…more capable teacher in the form of Oz. Until now, Ruby thought she was fine with it. Several months however however, and her daughter had grown more than she could’ve thought.

Carmine looked around to see everything in the same place as she left, then she looked at her mother. Carmine took in a deep, slow inhale through her nose as she saw Ruby already rosy cheeked and crying. How troublesome. If Ruby was crying, then Carmine would have to deal with her own tears! The awkward girl rubbed the back of her head.

Jaune:….I’ll give you two some spa-

Ruby & Carmine:Please stay right there.

Jaune:Guess I’m staying right here.

Ruby:Carmine I-

Carmine:Stop. Mom, I sent cake mix. I tested my semblance for distance and I know you know where those leaves come from. Clearly these are good things, so why the tears? I usually have to say something before you cry.

Ruby:Cut me some slack. *wiping face* they’re just not stopping okay? You didn’t call or text. I thought you still hated me.

Carmine:I don’t hate you. I…shouldn’t have said that. Things are just so..it’s a lot. I know it is for you too. Second, at first i didn’t respond because I was upset. Now it’s just because a grimm ate my phone…

Jaune:What?

Carmine:I don’t wanna talk about it. Point is that I’ve been doing some thinking. It’s hard not to when Oz and gramps speak in quotes. I don’t really ever know of we’ll see eye to eye. But I know I love you. *teary eyed* And… it really hurt to leave how did, you being so hurt. Your my mom, but also my hero. I want you proud of me and it felt really weird and scary to not make a cake like we always do. *crying* I thought about visiting but if you were still mad at me I don’t think I could’ve handled-

Ruby nearly tackled her daughter, sending them to the floor. Carmine’s arms instinctively wrapped around her mother as she cried softly into the familiar red cloak; while Ruby cried into Carmine’s red and yellow scarf.

Ruby:I love you so much. I miss you so badly; I’m sorry.

Carmine:I miss you too, but I think I should stay awhile longer. I’m learning to be stronger, for us. For everyone. I do not blame you for not wanting to teach me anymore but I still need to taught.

Ruby:I know….I just hate losing time with you. I want to hug the real you.

Carmine:I’ll visit for real next time. I’m sure gramps wants you visiting for the holidays so ya know, we’ll see each other then. In the meantime, I’ll call back and actually fly home next chance I get. Kay?

Ruby looked at her. They were both a mess, trying to wipe away tears from each other. It’d be funny if they weren’t so emotional. The sound of leaves turned their heads as Jaune took out the cake mix. Thank goodness he was here. Someone had to get them moving.

Jaune:I don’t know about you all but a cake needs to be made before a baby wakes up and wants all the icing.

Carmine:Awe, I miss my little man. He likes frosting now?

Ruby:Very much. Hehe, I’ll crack the eggs and you stir?

Carmine:Deal. Oh and…happy birthday mom.

Ruby:Happy Halloween. “Thanks for the treat.”

They hugged again. This time Carmine motioned Jaune to join in, which he gladly did. A sigh of relief was let out.

A cross the world, Carmine lit a single cupcake next to a freshly carved pumpkin. As she got ready to hum the birthday song in honor of her mother, a warmth spread through her as her eyes welled up. A gentle smile fell on face as she wiped a tear; the sigh of relief blowing the candle out.

Carmine:Heh.. “They’re the best kind of trick.”

A massive problem with how fandom - particularly queer rep - is going right now on this website is how quick people are to jump ship onto the next thing and then immediately start trashing the everliving shit out of the old thing.

Steven Universe (not a perfect show by any means) while it was coming out was celebrated constantly. The Garnet reveal? Pearl being in love with Rose? The Rupphire wedding? SU was revolutionary and has been quoted by cartoon creators now for being a big reason people are allowed to bring their stories to life. Say what you want about the show, but it broke boundaries and set precedents for a lot of the shows that you now love. And the show's plot lines regarding the diamonds has been taken in completely bad faith - do yall really think the half Jewish queer person meant for you to get "Let's all forgive Nazis" from the Diamonds redemption arcs??

After Steven Universe ended a large majority of people jumped to She Ra and the Princesses of Power and when they mentioned SU at all it was to put it down as a show with terrible representation and all round bad writing.

During SPOP's run it was massively popular, with a lot of buzz around the main ship, Catradora. I know this is gonna be taken in bad faith so a quick note - while I do like Catradora, I do feel that there should have been another season for Catra to properly acknowledge the harm she did to Adora and actually grow as a person before entering into a relationship. Catra was forgiven too easily, but that was in part due to Netflix not wanting to give the show another season to properly flesh out the redemption arc. The final season was rushed as all hell, and so many story points would have been better with another season to flesh them out further.

But I digress - during the show's run it was constantly talked about for it's representation, having multiple queer characters, including a nonbinary character.

The show ends and again, the fanbase jumps. This time, it's to the Owl House. People start talking about how SPOP was actually horrible representation and, my personal favourite, they "added gay people as a cash grab."

Yeah okay guys, I'm sure a queer nonbinary creator is writing about queer people because they actually dislike the gays and want to wring money out of us. That is definitely the situation here.

And now I'm worried that in a year or two we'll have the next big queer cartoon and the posts will start popping up -

"Amity Blight is the mean lesbian stereotype."

"Raine and Eda's relationship is problematic because-"

"Amity and Luz started out as rivals, which is toxic because-"

"The romance didn't start until later in the show, it was added at the end for a cash grab."

Again, I'm certain there's gonna be bad faith takes on this -- I'm not saying these shows are perfect. They all have flaws somewhere. No media is completely without it's faults and its good to recognise those faults, that what critical reading is. But calling someone an abuser for enjoying SPOP, or a Nazi sympathiser for liking SU (actual accusations I have seen on tumblr.com) is frankly a little ridiculous.

As for the bad rep argument - every show on this list has one thing in common: a queer creator. No one experiences queerness the exact same way - the only thing that harassing queer creators for not showing your experience does is make other queer creators... not want to write queer characters. No one wants to receive death threats because, for example, they based a character with their sexuality off of how that actually affected them and someone on the Internet decided they were feeding into a harmful stereotype.

Card story

As usual, can’t guarantee 100% accuracy on this.

While taking a walk around court, I noticed that the training hall was unusually lively.

My instincts screamed that things were getting oddly heated and my curiosity made me go over to check it out—

I came across a suspicious figure hiding behind a pillar near the entrance, peering in.

Emma: Prince Licht, what are you doing here?

Licht: Shh.

With a single glance, Prince Licht gestures for me to hide.

When I obediently lined up beside him, his garnet eyes returned to the training hall.

Licht: If you’re here to watch, it’s better if you don’t get caught. Because he might charge you an observation fee later.

(What’s happening inside…?)

Like Licht, I peeked inside.

The large space was filled with knights belonging to the foreign affairs faction.

In the center was not Nokto, Clavis, or Luke, but Prince Chevalier.

The crowd watched as Prince Chevalier swung his sword against a knight.

The heat in his eyes was so intense that even I could feel it from the outside.

Emma: I’ve had the chance to observe some of the foreign affairs faction’s training sessions… I feel like it’s rare to see Prince Chevalier here.

Licht: Normally, this is either the head knight’s or Clavis’ job. But on rare occasions, Chevalier will take part.

Emma: To exercise?

Licht: No, I think it’s to boost morale. Chevalier’s the strongest knight on the battlefield, so all soldiers admire him. In fact, knights from the foreign affairs faction often assemble here for Chevalier. While many fear the brutal beast, his exceptional strength maintains high morale. It’s a different kind of charisma from Leon’s.

(...I’ve never seen Licht be this talkative)

As he spoke, his gaze remained fixed on Prince Chevalier.

Emma: …Do you admire him too, Prince Licht?

Licht: …

Emma: You do, don’t you?

Licht: Stop grinning.

Emma: I’m calm.

Licht: …You could say that.

Emma: By the way, may I ask what you admire about him?

Licht: Why?

Emma: I’d like to use this as reference when choosing a king as Belle.

Licht: … ..As you can see, every one of Chevalier’s movements with his sword is calculated. Not a single pointless movement, no hesitation, and no gaps.

His swordsmanship itself is a national treasure-level work of art.

(Certainly…Even the untrained eye can see that Prince Chevalier’s swordsmanship is beautiful)

(Rather than a technique for killing, it’s a martial art that captivates people)

Licht: Only Chevalier, or perhaps the legendary Knight of Roses in the past, can draw such refined swordsmanship. It’s not the sort of thing that comes from hard work or anything like that.

It’s natural talent.

Emma: But aren’t you similar, Prince Licht?

Licht: …How so?

Emma: I don’t know how to explain it, but…the swordsmanship, footwork… Look, I’ve also observed the domestic affairs faction’s training. For some reason, I feel as if you’re making similar movements.

Licht: That’s because… I’m imitating him.

Emma: Imitating?

Prince Licht sighed in resignation after a moment of hesitation. 

Licht: I saw it by chance, a long time ago. In the training hall at midnight, I saw Chevalier swinging his sword…

Licht: …

The scene was like stepping into a world of art painted by a master artist.

Every time the blond-haired, blue-eyed young man swung his silver sword, it drew a line in the empty air.

The repeated swings drew beautiful, overlapping arcs with ease, leaving afterimages.

That was when a younger boy first learned the true meaning of “art”.

Chevalier: What do you want, shut-in?

Licht: …That was how I was a few years ago

Chevalier: You’re not that different now.

Licht: I’m…fine with swords now.

Chevalier: You seem to be avoiding people.

Licht: …

Chevalier: If you have nothing to say then get out of my way. Leave.

Licht: …No. Just let me stay for a little longer. I’ll be quiet.

Chevalier: Your staring is annoying.

Licht: Then I’ll close my eyes too.

Chevalier: …

Licht: Hey…

Chevalier: Aren’t you supposed to stay quiet?

Licht: I just want to ask you a question.

How can I become as skilled with a sword as you, brother?

Chevalier: Don’t ask worthless questions. No one swings a sword for the sake of improvement.

Licht: Then, for what reason?

Chevalier: For a good cause. On the battlefield, the weak die and only the strong survive. If you can’t handle a sword, you won’t accomplish anything.

Licht: What’s your cause?

Chevalier: What a foolish question.

Licht: …To protect the country?

Chevalier: …

Licht: I see… I never thought about that.

Chevalier: Of course you haven’t. You’re narrow-minded. This is a problem to address before skill.

Licht: …

Chevalier: If you’re also royalty then think on it. What do you want to accomplish next, now that you can keep yourself from killing your other half.

Licht: …

Chevalier: Then we’ll continue this discussion.

~~ Flashback ends ~~

Licht: —I’ve been thinking about that ever since. I’ve always been watching Chevalier’s sword like this.

Emma: Prince Licht…

Licht: That’s why I think the only similarity is movement.

But actually, it’s not the same at all, just an imitation… But, yeah…That’s why they look similar in your eyes.

Those garnet eyes shrouded in darkness seemed to soften a little.

Emma: You look a little happy.

Licht: I admire him…Is that bad?

???: It seems the domestic affairs faction has plenty of free time.

Emma and Licht: ?!

Suddenly, a chilling voice rings out and we turn our heads at the same time.

At the entrance of the training hall stood Prince Chevalier with his arms folded and not even out of breath.

(We got too caught up in our conversation!)

Chevalier: You outsiders are in the way. Leave.

Licht: Come on, just a little more.

It seemed like Prince Licht became defiant, stepping out from behind the pillar and brazenly confronting Prince Chevalier.

Licht: Let her watch. Emma wants to see.

Emma: Prince Licht, too, right?

Licht: I’m escorting…

Emma: Ah, you sneak.

Chevalier: I don’t care. But if you don’t want to be kicked out—

Icy blue eyes turned to the knights standing in line, led by a red-haired knight.

Chevalier: You’ll have to go against them and win.

Licht: Easy…

Prince Licht drew his sword and headed toward the center of the training hall without a moment of hesitation.

I felt the foreign affairs faction’s knight’s enthusiasm rise.

Emma: Prince Licht’s also very popular.

Chevalier: …

Emma: …He says he admires you, Prince Chevalier.

Chevalier: What nonsense. To think so highly of me… Beautiful swordsmanship means you don’t hesitate to kill. My swordsmanship is not human. If he does not want to become a beast, then stop imitating me.

(...This is what Prince Chevalier thinks)

Prince Chevalier leaned against the wall and began to watch Prince Licht swing his sword against a knight.

I stood beside him and followed his movements, which were as refined as a sword dance. 

Chevalier: In that sense, I don’t believe Mime will ever catch up to me. It’s too much of a “waste”.

Emma: That sounds like a compliment…

Chevalier: …

Emma: By the way, I heard something from a maid. In the castle, there’s this debate about who among you, Prince Leon, and Prince Licht is the best swordsman.

Chevalier: A pointless discussion.

Emma: It’s you, isn’t it?

Chevalier: No, the one who serves the greatest cause is the strongest.

Emma: I see…

Chevalier: If that one finds a cause, he will become better than he is now.

(Prince Licht respects Prince Chevalier, but…)

(It seems as if Prince Chevalier expects a lot from Prince Licht)

Emma: Are you looking forward to that day?

When I asked that probing question, he just laughed scornfully like usual.
