Star Wars: Republic Commando: Hard Contact, Chapter 4
"This is the art of genetic selection and manipulation. A human is naturally a learning creature, but it is also violent, selfish, lustful, and undisciplined. So we must walk the knife-edge between suppressing the factors that lead to disobedience and destroying that prized capacity for applying intelligence and aggression.
-- Hali Ke, senior research geneticist of Kamino"
If this is how Kaminoans regard humans, then a lot of their behavior makes sense.
"All but one of the gdans gave him up as inedible within a minute and disappeared into the waist-high crop. The remaining creature worried away at his left boot, a tribute to its tenacity, if not its intelligence. Those boots were specced to withstand every assault from hard vacuum to acid and molten metal. The little animal clearly believed in aiming high."
This unnamed gdan is one of my favorite characters in the book.
If Traviss had included more scenes like this, she would have a few more brownie points with me. A few.
"If you stab someone in the heart, they can still run. I once saw a man run a hundred meters like that, screaming as well. Go for the neck, like this. Sergeant Skirata had taught them a lot about knives. Put a bit of weight behind it, son."
Our first mention of Kal Skirata, to the best of my knowledge. I'm going to have a lot to say about him once he appears in the flesh.
Tumblr media
"But this was different. It wasn't distant, and the debris of the kill wasn't metal. The Weequay's blood had dried in a stream down his glove and right forearm plate. And he hadn't managed a clean kill. It was wrong.
They had drilled him to kill, and kill, and kill, but nobody had thought to teach him what he was supposed to feel afterward. He did feel something, and he wasn't certain what it was."
In subsequent books, I am definitely going to have some things to say about the protagonists' attitudes toward violence and killing, but this book gets something of a pass. The feelings the characters have about it is less "casual murder" and more "I don't have time to process this right now," which is considerably more sympathetic.
No one taught him what to do, psychologically speaking, after killing someone? I have two things to say about that. Firstly, Kamino really doesn't need to hammer home how little it cares about clone troopers, but it does so anyway. Secondly, Kal Skirata didn't teach you? The galaxy's greatest dad didn't talk about it once? I'm sure he had his reasons~
Maybe that's overly spiteful, but I just finished reading Triple Zero and I am not happy with that man right now.

A little hamlet called དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཐང་ (dkyil 'khor thang) is located within the enormous Phobjikha valley. This village was formerly known as Karzhingnang, according to the book kun mkhyen klong chen rab 'byams kyi gdan sa chags rabs by KMT printing press. The village is thought to have acquired its current name after a devotee from this village asked the treasure revealer to bless them during Tertoen Pema Lingpa's visit. The lama consented to grant them the blessing of Lama Norbu Jamtsho. During the procedure, Lama Norbu Jamtsho's mandala on the slope above the settlement emerged by itself. The community was then known as Kilkhorthang, which roughly translates to "the mandala's ground." #phobjikha #phobjikha_valley #phuentsho_photos #ig_bhutan #amazing_bhutan #incredible_bhutan #beautiful_bhutan #bhutan_believe #travelstories #travelbhutan (at Phobjikha Valley) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjDoN_Xpnh_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

YEAH, WHATEVER, NINER
#clonecumber rereads repcomm#a'DEN jgkf;ajhra#okay so i feel bad for niner in this scene because he's upset for a lot more reasons than he's saying#that's like#a niner staple honestly#he has a hard time processing and communicating anxiety and negative feelings about situations outside his control#but he also has a compulsive need to talk about those feelings and wants to be validated#(literally they tend to come out as almost compulsive bursts)#it's just that it gets translated verbally in a really wonky way#(probably fear of not being taken seriously? feeling like he has to have a better reason for what he's feeling than just having the emotion?#see: his grief over his brothers in hard contact being translated out loud as frustration over 'waste' when what he meant was 'i miss them'#and in hard contact again right after darman shoved him out of the hatch he starts to think about darman like three times and immediately#starts fussing about gdans instead#and here he's harping on duty and regulation when what he means is 'i'm scared my brothers are going to leave me'#a'den just doesn't speak niner so he doesn't get it#anyway a'den cracks me up though I laughed out loud when I got to this#even though niner reacts to having his feelings dismissed by digging in even harder#he tends to drop the bluster as soon as he's reassured he's not going to be judged for his feelings#so#being judged for his feelings is just guaranteed to fluster him#...anyway I didn't mean to meta everyone laugh at a'den#repcomm

Star Wars: Republic Commando: Hard Contact, Chapters 8 & 9
Chapter 8
"Her face was a study in blank surprise. It was also fascinating in a way he couldn't define. He had never seen a human female this close, this real. He was astonished by the dappling of small brown dots across the bridge of her nose and her cheeks, and the different strands of colors in her long, unkempt hair -- light browns, golds, even reds. And she was as thin as the locals. He could see blue veins in the backs of her hands, and she smelled different from anyone he'd ever shared space with. He wasn't sure if she was pretty or downright ugly. He just knew that she was utterly alien and utterly fascinating, as alien as a gdan or a Gurlanin. It was almost stopping him from concentrating on the job."
Despite my reaction to their first meeting, Darman/Etain is the only RepComm ship that I actually like, probably because it feels like it has actual buildup and chemistry. Ignoring Etain's actions in Triple Zero (which is a discussion for another day), I find them pretty cute.
I like the little detail that Darman doesn't know what freckles are.
Chapter 9
"There is something very touching about them. They look like soldiers; they fight like soldiers; and sometimes they even talk like soldiers. They have the finest qualities of the fighting man. But behind that is nothing -- no love, no family, no happy memory that comes from having truly lived. When I see one of these men killed, I weep more for him than for any ordinary soldier who has lived a full and normal life."
-- Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi
I was not expecting to see anything in this series involving the Jedi that isn't in some way bashing them, but this pleasantly surprised me.
Ki-Adi mentioning family is a lot sadder when you remember that he lost all three of his wives and all of his children during the war.
"Atin took a bite out of the white cube and washed it down with a gulp of water from his bottle. 'He [Kal Skirata] never trained us. Heard a lot about him.'
'Trained Fi and Darman too. Our squads were all in the same battalion.'
'We had Walon Vau.'
'That explains where you get your cheery outlook.'
'Sergeant Vau taught us the importance of planning for the worst scenario,' Atin said, all loyalty. 'And maximizing your tech. Being hard is good, being hard with superior tech is better.'
'I'll bet.'
'I'd heard everyone loved Skirata, though. Even if he was a bad-tempered drunk.'
Niner had never been drunk and he didn't even know what alcohol tasted like. 'He cared what happened to us. He was one of us, pretty much. Not just because he couldn't cope with not being in the army anymore, or had to disappear. No, he was a good man.' Niner would have given a great deal to have seen Skirata come limping through the trees right then, demanding to know what they were doing lounging around like a bunch of Kaminoan nahra artists."
Oh look, our first mention of Walon Vau, problematic-est of problematic favs. (And, indirectly, my beloved Mird.)
Knowing how Atin actually feels about Vau, Niner calling him "all loyalty" here is pretty uncomfortable.
*Flatly* I don't love Kal Skirata. I love well-written fanfics with him, I do not love him in canon.
Apparently, nahra is the Kaminoan version of ballet, in which they express emotions they usually repress. Huh.
"'Why are we scraping maps in the dirt when we've got perfectly good holocharts?'
'That's what Sergeant Skirata used to do,' Darman said. 'He didn't like holos. Too transparent. He also thought that feeling the texture of dirt focused your mind.'
'And you don't need any technology to do it.'
'He was a great believer in intuition.'"
Any time Kal Skirata has any advice or does anything that I actually like (ie, anything that doesn't make me want to strangle him), I feel honor-bound to mention it.
I have to wonder if he had to explain what dirt was to his trainees. Omega definitely had no idea what dirt was when she first left Kamino. Oh, now I have this image of him reading the dictionary definition out to a very confused group of cadets.
"Etain hesitated. She had once heard someone say that they could never remove their betrothal ring, not until they died. Her Padawan braid felt equally permanent, as if her soul was woven in with it, and that removing it after so long -- even temporarily -- would rend the fabric of the universe and underscore her belief that she was not Jedi material. But it had to be done. She unfastened the single thin braid and combed the strands of wavy hair loose with her fingers.
She felt less like a Jedi than ever, and not even remotely close to a commander."
This is one of the examples of Traviss's writing that I don't have any problem with. If she stuck more with this, instead of the Jedi-bashing and Mando-shilling, I wouldn't have so much of a problem. This passage gets Etain's situation across very well. In particular, her reluctance to remove her Padawan braid despite the circumstances reminds me of how I tend to cling to specific objects no matter the situation.
Wow, I actually don't have much to pick at with these two chapters. I suspect this will occur less and less as the series goes on, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Summary: A gdan bite lands Etain back on Coruscant early from Qiilura.
A/N:  Set between Hard Contact and Triple Zero.
-----------------------------------------------
Etain knew she must keep very still while she waited for Master Zey to return.
Even though he was on the other side of the compound, she could still sense Zey’s dark mood. He stood near two other individuals she didn’t recognize, one a whirlpool of emotions she couldn’t immediately identify, and the other alert with deadly calm to her in the Force, but judging from Zey’s fluctuating temper, she imagined it was an argument of some sort. She closed her eyes, trying to seek the place of inner calm as she was hit with a wave of dizziness: the medication she had received from the last medic was beginning to wear off.
The medic had warned her that the medication would not last long, it was meant for emergencies to temporarily delay the reaction to buy a little more time. Three months into her work on Qiilura, a karking gdan had bitten her at some point, she couldn’t recall if it was during the day or at night. She just recalled unexpectedly falling ill the point where she began relying on the Force just to keep moving forward, as to not slow everyone else down. Zey eventually ruled she had to return to the Temple to the healers, and that he would take her, leaving Captain Maze with Bardan Jusik. Upon arrival to Coruscant, however, Master Camas ambushed Zey on the landing platform, dragging them both to the Special Ops Brigade headquarters to address a personnel issue, based on what she’d overheard. She didn’t mind, but she was also not sure how long she could remain standing now that the medication was starting to wear off again. The medic had said to stay hydrated at least, until she saw a healer.
Maybe Master Zey won’t notice if I just grab a cup of water.
The fountain was just down the hall. She could manage a few steps there and back.
Etain stood up slowly, steadying herself by placing a hand on the armrest, and then, using the Force to keep herself from swaying in place, walked to the office door, and then slipped out into the hall. It was quieter than she expected it to be, given that it was midday and that they were on a military base on Coruscant, but given that she had no idea of how populated a typical base was supposed to be in wartime, she accepted it as normal until she learned otherwise.
She was poking around the kitchen searching for a cup when she sensed four familiar presences further down the hall. She grinned despite herself, and, after checking to make sure Master Zey was still outside, left the kitchen and continued down the hall. Her pace quickened slightly, and she couldn’t help the excitement at seeing Omega Squad again.
Okay, quick hello, water, then Zey’s office again.
She paused at the door, aware of a low murmur of conversation on the other side. She hesitated, and then knocked, sensing their shift from a relaxed state to alertness. Then she tapped in a code she’d seen Zey use earlier to enter the office, and then stepped froward into the room when the door noiselessly slid open to reveal a room with several tables with holoprojectors.
Omega Squad were standing at attention by one of the tables, and she paused for a heartbeat when she saw black armor instead of the white she recalled them in last. Then her brain caught up a second later as she sensed them relaxing when they saw her. “Well, ma’am, I have to be honest I was thinking it was going to be General Camas since I last saw General Zey out on the parade grounds, but this is also a good surprise,” Fi said cheerfully as he removed his helmet.
Etain grinned as she leaned against the doorframe. “It’s good to see all of you again,” she said, glancing between them. Niner was also removing his helmet, and Darman and Atin were removing theirs as she made eye contact with them. “Heading out, or did you just arrive?” she asked, straightening before taking a few steps towards them.
“Heading out, we just finished with an assignment here. We got new armor as well, it holds up better than what we had before, it’s better with camouflage, and it’s already been tested,” Darman said, tapping the plate on his shoulder. He tilted his head as she leaned on the nearest table. “Are you finished on Qiilura?” he asked, grinning slightly when she shrugged a shoulder, grinning despite herself.
She recalled the comments about the uselessness of Procurement and the lack of camouflage on Qiilura. “Ah, I think my time on Qiilura is over,” she admitted, shifting to brace a hip against the table. She began to roll her robe sleeve up. “Remember the gdans? Those little creatures that were always trying to bite us and made those tunnels? I think—”
The shift in the Force, namely that of Zey’s mood darkening as he tapped her awareness, was her only warning, causing her to stiffen and fall quiet. She pushed her sleeve down as Omega Squad pulled their helmets back on and stood at attention, the soft whisper of the door sliding open behind her confirming her suspicions. Zey swept into the room, mouth tight with agitation that Etain usually saw when it came to misbehaving Padawans and initiates. He wasn’t alone either, she realized, when a shorter male Human wearing a leather jacket limped in after him, and an ARC captain — she recognized the red pauldrons — behind him. She blinked at the blank expression that the man wore, but she still felt as though he was assessing her for something, he kept glancing in her direction as he limped over to an empty chair. Niner, Fi, Darman and Atin seemed to recognize him though, which made her less worried. The ARC captain remained standing at the door, which had closed behind the three of them.
“Padawan, please sit down before you fall down. Master Camas will be along in a few minutes to take you to Master Che,” Zey said, voice curt. Yes, he’s mad. Whether at her, the unidentified man, or someone else, she didn’t know, but she knew better than to test him now.
“Yes, Master Zey.” She adjusted her robes as she moved to sit two chairs down from the stranger. She watched as Zey gestured for Omega Squad to sit, then looked at Darman, whose helmet was now focused on Zey. She almost looked down to her hands clasped in her lap, when a flicker of motion caught her eye. While Darman’s hands were resting in his lap, one of his hands was slowly moving. She frowned, watching as he flattened his palm against his knee before his fingers started moving again. It took her a few seconds to realize that she recognized the motions as one of the hand signals that he’d taught her when they were on the run. Are you okay?
She looked up at him. His helmet was still facing Zey as Zey activated the holoprojector, but she got the sense he was actually looking at her. “Gdan bite” she mouthed, gesturing to the bulky outline of the bandage underneath her sleeve. She paused, trying to recall the hand signals for numbers, and then, mimicking him by keeping her hands in her lap, she signed ‘twenty’ and ‘day’ before gesturing to her forehead to indicate the fever that had plagued her for weeks now, one that was still somewhat at bay. Darman gave her a barest hint of a nod of acknowledgment, which even she could have interpreted as agreeing to something Zey had just said.
“Know them?”
She glanced at the man, who was watching her with slight interest. She hesitated, but then remembered that Omega Squad recognized and seemed comfortable around him. “We worked together for a bit,” she whispered, keeping the explanation short as she folded her hands into her lap again. She didn’t know how much information was considered classified, and how much this newcomer was allowed to know, but she’d let Master Zey talk to him if he wanted more information. She then turned her attention back to Master Zey, already closing her eyes to try to meditate. She couldn’t remember all of Master Che’s lessons when it came to self-healing, but she would at least try until Master Camas arrived to collect her.
At least I got to see Dar, Fi, Niner and Atin again. Definitely worth it.

"What's wrong?" Atin asked. "Nothing," Darman said. It was natural not to like confined spaces, he told himself. With the light projected forward, he could see just how suffocatingly small a space he was in. With his night vision in place, he was simply looking down a narrow field of view, safe inside his armor, cocooned from the world in a way he was not only used to, but actually needed. Get a grip. He could hear the sound of scurrying farther ahead, but it was moving away from him. His pack caught the roof of the tunnel, occasionally scraping loose soil and stones. The warren had been excavated by thousands of small paws, circular in section because gdans obviously didn't need as much floor space as a tall human male. Darman almost felt that his hands and knees were against the sides of the tunnel because of the curvature of the floor, like negotiating a chimney when rock climbing. At times he felt he was losing his orientation and had to shut his eyes and shake his head hard to regain accurate proprioception. "You okay, Dar?" Atin asked. Darman could hear labored breathing in his helmet and he thought it was his own, but it was Atin's. "Bit disoriented." "Let your head drop and look at the floor. The pressure on the back of your neck is going to make you feel giddy anyway." "You, too, eh?" "Yeah, this is weird. Whatever we inherited from Jango, it wasn't a love of caving."

Star Wars Alien Species - Gurlanin
The Gurlanins were a polymorphic species native to the planet Qiilura. Qiilura had many islands with fertile soil, deep river inlets, rolling plains, deciduous forests, lakes, and gameboard fields. The planet also had gem mines, sources of zeka quartz and green silicates. The planet was home to a number of native non-sentient species such as gdans, merlies and vheks.
Tumblr media
During the Clone Wars, Qiilura was the location of a Separatist biological weapons lab that was developing a pathological agent specifically designed to kill clones. During the Mission to Qiilura, Omega Squad—a squad of Republic commandos—was sent to destroy the biological weapons lab and, if possible, locate Jedi Master Kast Fulier and his Padawan Etain Tur-Mukan. Although Master Kast Fulier was dead prior to their arrival, Omega Squad was ultimately successful in destroying the lab after joining up with Padawan Tur-Mukan and enlisting the help of a native Gurlanin, Jinart.
Due to the Separatist droids burning the barq fields in the search of one of Omega's members, there was a galactic shortage of the grain, causing economic problems for both the Trade Federation and the already impoverished farmers who lost their crops.
After the success of the mission to Qiilura, a deal was struck between the Republic and the Gurlanins to remove the Human colony. The terms of the agreement specified that the Gurlanins, with their ridiculously effective espionage skills, would act as spies for the Republic, and the entire Human colony would immediately be evicted from the planet by Republic forces. For the members of the dwindling population of Gurlanins, this meant that the merlie herds would once again reach their previous numbers in the wild, restoring balance to the environment. Failing to keep their end of the bargain, a Republic garrison was established and led by General Arligan Zey and Commander Etain Tur-Murkan. Their objective was to train the Human colonists in guerrilla warfare in case of another Separatist attack. However, because the Separatists had no other interests in the system, all that the training and equipping accomplished was the further encroachment of Gurlanin territory by Human colonists.
Furious, the Gurlanins decided that the only way to get the Republic to listen was to grab it by the ears. An entire Republic troopship was destroyed due to information leaked to the Separatists by Gurlanin agents. This caused the Senate to immediately understand the tremendous threat the Gurlanins could be, and a decision was quickly made to remove the Human colonists on Qiilura.
The Senate Committee on Refugees was informed by Republic Intelligence that at least two, and possibly a much larger number of other Gurlanins, had infiltrated Coruscant, where they were in place and standing by to inflict significant damage to the Republic in retaliation for the continued occupation of Qiilura. Tur-Murkan, now a General, led a contingent of clone troopers to expedite the evacuation of the Human colonists. The colonists resisted leaving their homes, and openly engaged Republic forces with the militias trained by Zey and Tur-Murkan. The evacuation quickly became an eviction, and when clone casualties grew out of hand, Tur-Murkan regretfully gave the order to use lethal force, if necessary, to remove the remaining colonist hold-outs.
When the Empire rose into power, Qiilura was conquered by Imperial stormtroopers.
During the Yuuzhan Vong's incursion into the galaxy, Qiilura fell within space conquered by the invaders.
Tumblr media
Gurlanin are largely considered mysterious and manipulative, and always dangerous. Changelings are regarded by most as beings untrustworthy, though the Gurlanin are very loyal to those they deem worthy of their trust. However, betrayal of that trust can earn a very dangerous enemy, as the Gurlanin are vengeful. The Gurlanin are noted as having some of the most pleasant, soothing voices in the galaxy, lending aid to their attempts at persuasion and deception.
In their natural form, Gurlanin are large, fourlegged canines with coarse black fur and no noticeable ears. Their mouths have a number of sharp, lethal fangs used for hunting small mammals on Qiilura. However, Gurlanin are meta-morphs, and can change shape at will, often appearing as whatever is necessary to achieve their goals.
Gurlanin vary wildly in height, and weigh about 80 kilograms or 176 pounds.
Gurlanins age at the following stages:
1 - 10 Child
11 - 17 Young Adult
18 - 45 Adult
46 - 60 Middle Age
61 - 74 Old
Examples of Names: Helabrus, Jinart, Tanclae, Valaqil.
Languages: Gurlanin speak to each other telepathically, but most all have learned Basic, to better spy on the local barq farmers.
