im beyond happy that he understood the situation fully and doesnt think that the entirety of my country is full of homophobic shit heads. Im really glad he understands how genuinely damaging matty healys actions were and that it only endangered queer malaysians, set our progress back 50 steps and how in the end it helped no one. i was really afraid that he was going to misunderstand the situation and assume everyone angry were just homophobes. while i good chunk unfortunately were, another good chunk is queer malaysians who have been fighting for our rights here, fearing that our progress now means nothing and we've been thrown right back to square one, queer malaysians who are now worrying for our lives in case our govt decides to pass more anti queer laws that endangers not only our rights but our lives and existences in general. I really hope there's a way for him and the strokes to play here some day

idk how prevalent this topic is in tumblr but im so mad rn woth the 1975 and matty healy and the stunt they pulled at good vibes fest kuala lumpur. my 2 cents on the 1975 incident as an lgbtq indonesian who's (unfortunately) is living in malaysia rn: malaysia is stricter and generally has more negative opinion on lgbtqs compared to indonesians (or at least jakarta). The stunt they pulled is:

a. fucking stupid

b. Illegal here, and

c. Does more harm than good

all the 1975 supporters who thinks this is a W need to know that innocent people are gonna be thrown in jail due to the band's idiocy. i might not be Malaysian but at the moment, i live here and *whispers * i am lgbtq dont tell the government this can put me in danger (probs not bc im not out as far as anyone here concerned) but malaysian queers and activists are not safe at all. The chances of them being jailed is higher than mine and they're being put in a dangerous situation against their will. This is undoing years of activism efforts. And it hurts

This will affect other SEA countries and their efforts towards lgbtqs 100%. I've seen Indonesians turn against the queers due to this. not to mention that this is gonna be twisted for some fucked up political gain.

this is 100% a performative white saviour complex shit. the fact that they're yet to apologise for the hurt they're causing is telling. For all i know, this could put me in trouble if i am out. and I've been in the closet for the entirety of my stay here. I can see the surge of homophobia at least around my friends and malaysian twt and it's not making me feel safe!! and it's not that easy for me to leave!!! thanks matt and ross now im suffering from the consequences of your actions.

Matt Healy, already known to be an arrogant racist douchebag, was drunk onstage in Malaysia, pacing around with a bottle in his hand ranting about the government's anti-lgbt laws and saying "I didn't even want to come here". He kisses a man in the band at the end of his unscheduled monologue. When the authorities step in, they're kicked out before the set is done, the rest of the festival is cancelled, and the 1975 is banned from the country, completely fucking over fans, causing everyone involved in the festival to lose money, potentially preventing Malaysians from seeing other love music in the future, and jeopardizing the well-being of the entire LGBT community in Malaysia.

Matthew Healy is an idiot for the stunt he pulled at the good vibes festival in Malaysia. Not only did he get the whole event cancelled, he's pissed off the conservative Malaysian government and created a shit ton of problems for the Malaysian lgbt+ community.

Malaysia's political, cultural and religious landscape is extremely different from the USA and UK's. What he did was not only unhelpful he just gave the a mountain of ammo to the anti-lgbt+ movement. Naturally he won't feel anything because he's virtue signalling from an ivory tower (he's rich foreigner okay getting blacklisted in my country isn't going to cost him anything) but the community here in Malaysia will be feeling the consequences of his actions for years to come.

Refunds have been announced today for those who bought tickets but there is no compenstion for the damage he inflicted on the lgbt+ movement here.
