the wangxian + a-yuan "dads with an adopted son" thing is fine and enjoyable in fanfics honestly but I think we as a fandom are really not utilizing the idea of all of them in unconventional familial structures enough. Like, canonically it wasn't so much that wwx was a-yuan's guardian as that a-yuan was being raised collectively by the wens and wwx was adopted INTO the larger wen family. And lwj got attached to him through that. A-yuan just has these very attached weird uncles/older cousin figures that aren't related to him by blood at all but keep sticking around.
Just think of a modern AU with a lot less death where lwj does as he does in canon and keeps showering a-yuan in gifts as much as he can and when wwx is like "aiyah lan zhan you're gonna spoil him. Not everyone is as rich as you! What's his family supposed to say if they can't buy him all the stuff you do?" lwj just goes "Hm". And from then on out every year once a-yuan's birthday is near the extended Wen family members (well. the ones that are invited that is. No one wants wen chao at a birthday party) wakes up to a wechat payment from lwj.
Random wen cousin number 6 texts granny like
cousin 6: i just got 400 yuan????
granny: oh that's just wangji
cousin 6: i've never met this guy in my life???
granny: he wants you to buy a-yuan a nice birthday present!
cousin 6: how does he know my bank account???

Y’all ever think granny wen just pull a:
“Oh a-Han was such a cute child ☺️☺️☺️, he used to play with my son all the time! A bit cruel at times, such a shame he never grew out if it-“
And it takes a moment for Wei Wuxian to realize she’s talking about Wen Ruohan-

Sect leader Granny
Upon her death, Granny Wen ends up time traveling 15 or so years back in time, to before the Dancing statue goddess could attack. With knowledge of everything that will happen unless she does something to change the future, Granny Wen decides to take up her birthright: to be the sect leader of the Wen. Her younger brother was Wen Rouhan’s father and he stole the throne from her when they were younger. She didn’t fight back because she wanted to be a doctor, not deal with politics, but now she regrets it.
Wen Rouhan falls sick in a “mysterious illness” (after all, as a healer she knows All about poisons) and when he dies she is there to take the throne. His sons are too young to rule and there are no other close relatives except her own children. She becomes sect leader Wen and brings her family of healers to the capital to start rehabilitating the snake pit that is the Qishan Wen by having them learn from the Dafan Wen.
Remembering Wei Wuxian’s tales of his times as an orphaned street kid in Yiling, she also goes there and brings him home. She has her children adopt him as their son Wen Wuxian and he grows up with Wen Ning and Wen Qing as his siblings. Granny Wen encourages his genius and he becomes fantastic with talismans and cultivation and also learns some medicine. He and Wen Qing are invention buddies and he and Wen Ning train archery together - and with Wen Ning never hurt by the dancing statue he can cultivate with Wen Wuxian. Wen Xu and Wen Chao gets forcefully taught kindness and humility and become decent people.
Granny Wen encourages the creation of connections between the Wens and other clans (and very closely monitors the Jins, prepared with some “medicine” for Jin Guangshan if it turns out to be necessary). So she sends her grandchildren to the Cloud Recesses where they meet the Lans and the Jiang. Wei Wuxia and Lan Wangji fall in love, as is destined, and Granny soon has a betrothal drawn up for them. They nighthunt and help the common people and live with no regrets. They never adopt A-Yuan, for Granny Wen’s younger child, his parent, never dies, but he is Wen Wuxian's baby cousin and they gladly babysit him instead. And they adopt a dozen other children as their own.
There is no war, there is no genocide. Granny Wen dies peacefully of old age, satisfied with her accomplishments. Wen Qing becomes an amazing doctor and she will be an amazing Sect leader in the future, with two little brothers to help her lead the Wens to an ever brighter future. All is well.

Re-reading MDZS and reaching the second siege, Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning and the Wen Remnants 😭
This was one of the houses that he had built himself. Before he left, the house had still been fine. Although it was crude, it was a place to seek shelter from the weather, nonetheless holding the people he was familiar with; the people he treasured. In the saying 'the things remain but the people don't', at least 'the things' still remained. With such a scene in front of him, there wasn't even anything to remind him of the people whom he missed. Wei WuXian, "Don't look anymore." Wen Ning, "… I knew that it'd be like this a long time ago. I just wanted to see if there was anything left…"
Tumblr media
Wei WuXian's lips trembled. He seemed as if he wanted to say something, but still he couldn't say it. He lowered his head and bestowed upon them a heavy salute. His voice was rasp, "… Thank you." Lan WangJi saluted as well.
Tumblr media
When they were fighting, the blood corpses seemed as fierce as could be, but right now, when facing them, they still appeared hideous, but their movements seemed somewhat clumsy. At varied times, they bent down and lifted their hands, returning the salute. And then, as if something had sucked out the energy and life within them, they all collapsed at once. Their blood-colored bodies seemed to be fragile porcelain, cracking apart inch by inch, their pieces growing smaller and smaller. If another gust of wind blew over, there might be nothing left. Wen Ning threw himself onto the ground, using his hands to gather up the crimson ashes.

From the next chapter of “Operation Barking Dog.”
———————
When they let the Hu family know after breakfast the next morning, A-Ning insisted they take Xiao Ta with them so she could be warm at the inn, too, and Wei Ying caved quickly, tying the little creature to his chest in a sling and tucking her underneath his outer robes, so she would benefit from his body heat and be snug under his cape as well. Xiao Pingguo was significantly less enthused to be brought from the relative warmth of the barn, immediately trying to step on Wei Ying to express her discontent, only stopped by Lan Wangji’s quick reaction.
The trek itself wasn’t terribly unpleasant, quiet but for the wind and Wei Ying’s flute until his hands were too cold to be outside of mittens and he tucked Chenqing away in favor of staying warm. So instead he talked the rest of the way, explaining his intended remedy for the cold, which hinges on buying six large blankets, sewing talismans for keeping cold out on one side of each, and talismans for giving off heat to the other side, to be hung from the ceiling, walls, and placed on the floor of their shed.
“Popo was delighted when I came up with them—said her old bones couldn’t handle to cold as well as they used to, and she had difficulty with arthritis anyway. I even made her some warm packs for the painful days.”

ROUND 1 - GROUP A
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Pinako Rockwell
She fits the criteria (she's a granny, old, gets called a hag by at least one character) and also she's a legend.
Granny Wen
she's old! she's often also kind of ignored, for her significance in the life of her living relative in the main cast, often replaced in her role in the story by the protagonists for the sake of saying wwx of all people is a good, involved dad, among other things, which... hot take: is silly, especially when it requires you to forget this quality old hag!! she matters!! <- incoherent but she's old hagging it up in the story just absolutely doing nothing else and no one seems to appreciate this until they can use it in a moral argument for or against something! victim or nothing. trite

Chinese babies and toddlers traditionally wear belled anklets - ideally chains with bells and good luck symbols, all in silver or gold, but historically there probably would have been examples with eg string, steel, or similar alternatives. There was a particular cheap, silvery metal described in late Qing sources, idk what it is in English.
Part of this is a practical way to keep track of where the baby is once they get fucking mobile, part of this is superstitious - to 'chain' the baby to the world and from being stolen away by evil spirits, aka the 46% historical child mortality rate.
It's a sad, sad day in the Burial Mounds when A-Yuan's anklet - the one little valuable they have left, hidden carefully in the prison camps and barely worth anything to begin with - has to be sold off to buy food. It did its job alright - it indirectly kept A-Yuan alive and healthy a little while longer. But why did it have to be that way?
Granny Wen was the one who fought the most about selling it. The old woman was surprisingly fierce while she argued with the Yilling Patriarch who had slaughtered thousands.
"It's necessary!" she insisted. "Look at where we are living now! This place is filled with evil spirits that will snatch A'Yuan away given half a chance- he needs to keep it!"
"All of the spirits here fear me," Wei Wuxian argued back. "None of them would dare touch any of you as long as you stay within the barriers."
"Granny, we have nothing in food or supplies. The money Wei Wuxian had with him is already gone," Wen Qing did her best to reason with her elder.
"We will forage and hunt for food!"
"Too many of us are sick or injured for that right now. I don't like this either, but we can buy a cheaper replacement for A'Yuan after we sell-"
Granny shot from her seat at the word 'replacement'. "Absolutely not! There is no replacing it! My son made it with his own two hands as a gift to his son! You cannot replace that!"
All at once the fight seemed to leave Granny Wen and she collapsed into her seat. She put her head in her hands to cover her wet eyes.

Granny Wen is the MVP
That one time Nie Huaissang physically dragged his brother to the Burial Mounds, because, listen! Wei Wuxian is his friends, alright? Nie Mingjue is so confused.
"Xichen stop laughing. No, Xichen listen! She pet my head and ask me if I've been sleeping. And she shushed me!" Xichen will eat his laugh when he also gets the granny treatment.
Granny Wen sees these two over-worked, too-young sect leaders and immediately makes them sit down and eat a decent meal. Nie Huaissang finds it hilarious that his big scary brother is being intimidated by an old woman. I mean, Wen Qing had to get it from someone…
Lan Wangji is just enjoying the excuse to spend more time in the Burial Mounds. He just sits quietly near the radish patch and plays with A-Yuan. A-Yuan has also latched himself onto Nie Mingjue's leg multiple times. Nie Huaissang has already started work on a painting to immortalise his brother's expression.
I'm just picturing all this in the foreground and in the back is Wei Wuxian just... confused but pleasantly so. He comes out of his cave to see what all the fuss is about and is greeted by Wen Qing, Granny Wen, and Lan Wangji all simultaneously telling him to go back to bed. He goes to complain and Lan Wangji just scoopes him up and carries him back to bed. Lan Wangji doesn't return for quite a while. And when he does, Lan Xichen tactfully remarks that his forehead ribbon is crooked.
Granny makes very pointed eye contact with Lan Xichen and makes a comment about how spring weddings are lovely. Lan Xichen eagerly agrees, until he realises that Granny Wen wasn't just talking about Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.
Somewhere in the distance Jiang Yanli's mayhem senses are tingling. Also is this a good time to admit that Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen eloped like two years ago? Of course that will not be good enough for anyone - they're both sect leaders so everyone needs to make a massive fuss. Lan Wangji agrees, mostly to get Lan Xichen back for all his wedding-planning-schemes.
Lan Qiren arrives at the Burial Mounds ready to kick up a fuss and gets stared down by Granny. She talks about "her boys" and no one dares to ask if she means Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning or also the Lan and Nie brothers.
Suddenly everyone finds themselves with an extra grandmother, whether they like it or not. She has a few Things to say to Jin Guangyao and Jin Zixuan. She's also 100% up for helping Madam Jin become a widow. And imagine her delight at having another grandchild by proxy because Yanli is having a baby.
Also, imagine her shushing Jin Guangyao like you do with a little kid. Jin Guangyao doing his usual customer service smile and Granny Wen is having none of it.
"Young man, save that nonsense for others. Now sit down and eat your lunch."
She probably knew Wen Ruohan when he was a stupid teenager. I bet there's no flavour of stupid she has not seen and heard at this point...
