im not being funny but humphrey from ghosts has the most raw fucking story and it seems almost unintentional. like he's literally comic relief with not much screentime but if you think about it too closely doesn't it evoke like. extreme existential horror??

like man was lonely for basically his entire life and then got accidentally decapitated after sacrificing himself for a woman who resented him so she could have a better life, even though he also didn't get the life he wanted. it wasn't even a heroic death lol. then he spent hundreds of years separated from his body alone in death too because nobody ever remembers him... like im fully aware its not meant to be this serious but jesus christ, humphrey's story isn't even a tragedy, it's straight up hell lol

You know how we’ve established that both Sakura and Hinata are bad. People tend to say Sakura is much worse since she’s a main character, so she has more screentime that she wastes. And she is indeed a poor excuse of a shinobi who made herself the laughing stock of the entire fandom. But Hinata isn’t good either as a support character. Even her teammates Kiba and Shino outshine and outperform her already in Part 1.

What did she accomplish in Part 1? She agreed to fight Neji when Naruto told her to and got beaten to a pulp? Isn’t that the bare minimun? What else? She gave Naruto ointment?

What about Part 2? She locates things with her byakugan in the search for Sasuke mission. In the Pain arc, she does a very stupid thing by jumping in the middle of Naruto and Pain’s fight, despite being told she would only be in the way, and gets one-paneled. This almost gets Naruto and the whole village killed. In the war arc, despite the fact her supposed character arc is about becoming courageous she’s shown scared and moping and needs to be cheered on by Naruto. She, at age sixteen, manages a ‘badass moment’ that culminates in the use of an ability that Neji could use at age 12 when he was a genin. An ability that was her priviledge since it was only taught to the clan’s heir, yet Neji learned it by sheer observasion. Lol. Then she needs to be reminded by Kiba to use her byakugan and leaves her post and teammates to run to Naruto, and trips over a rock and begs Neji’s ghost to protect Naruto, and does nothing for the rest of the manga. Some badass she is. More like ass.

Ranking my favorite animated dad characters because I can’t sleep

I realized that a lot of my favorite animated characters are dads, so fuck it. Let’s rank them both on their dad-ness and on their character overall.

7. Ansel Beauregard (Arlo the Alligator Boy/I heart Arlo): okay so, as much as I’m kinda hyperfocusing on this guy rn, he kinda HAS to get the lowest rank ‘cause like… he literally abandoned his gator baby in the sewer. Honestly the fact that he’s able to be likable at all is a damn miracle, but the movie and show pull it off surprisingly well.

Basically from the moment he finally accepts Arlo into his life, he’s trying his best to make amends - though admittedly he still doesn’t always go about it the best way, lol. Growing up bullied then isolated and then becoming crazy rich at a young age has definitely made him more than a little oblivious, out of touch and self-centered (though these parts of his personality are still funny/endearing instead of being annoying imo) but he still genuinely cares (even when he was unwilling to face his truth, he still gave Arlo advice that he at least thought was in Arlo’s best interest based on what worked for him) and I really do love the interactions he has with Arlo. I also love the whole bird-man aspect of him both as a character design and fun quirk, and his VA work and singing is also phenomenal. (Seriously, I’ve been listening to “Better Life” multiple times per day, someone pls I need help asdfghjkl)

6. Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Phineas & Ferb): So, back when I was a kid, Doof was definitely my favorite character, and while I’ve kiiiiiinda grown out of him in some aspects (his over-exposure in things like MML didn’t exactly help), I can still enjoy him for being a really funny and really enjoyable character.

Can he sometimes be annoying, slightly obnoxious and take up too much screentime in the latter seasons? Sure, totally. But like- I’m never gonna NOT love the ‘evil villain who has a huge soft spot for their child’ trope, it’s a classic for a reason. Doof is a dork and can be overbearing, but he’s also really sweet and will do anything for his daughter, including get himself stung by dozens of bees. It also can’t be denied just how many of his lines and moments can still get laughs out of me even after all these years. We Stan a petty ADHD-king and (not-so-)evil scientist dad.

5. Hamato Yoshi/Lou Jitsu/Splinter (ROTTMNT): oh hey, another dad with trauma - only instead of being bullied and forced to hide himself or having a nonsensical tragic backstory, he had to deal with generational trauma, being forced into fighting/killing for sport, and finally getting mutated which led to years of on/off depression. …yeahhhhh.

This is another character I really admire for just how well they’re written, even if he wasn’t always the best dad (though for the record, he wasn’t nearly as neglectful as some fans want to claim…) I think most Rise fans would agree that Splinter absolutely has the best arc in the series, going from a strictly comedy relief couch potato to a loving father/tragic figure who manages to rise above everything for the sake of his kids. He’s willing to let the world burn for the sake of his sons and I respect the hell out of him for it regardless of whether or not it’s the ‘moral’ choice. But he’s also still really funny and really cool when he wants to be, and for as much as I’ve drifted away from Rise, Splinter and his story is still one of the few aspects I adore and appreciate about this show.

4. Pete McGee (The Ghost and Molly McGee): Pete is just a super endearing character to me even if he arguably has the least going on of all the TGAMM characters. He’s a very typical goofy sitcom dad both in terms of design (which, ngl… Pete is kinda really cute? Am I the only one who sees it?) and attitude, usually only being used for comedy while Sharon is the one who gets to be the slightly more serious one and have the heart-to-hearts with/give advice to Molly.

But that’s fine because even if he’s not the deepest dad on this list, he’s still incredibly endearing imo. He’s a 100% Wife Guy, he struggles to stand up for himself but still always tries to stand up for his family, he inspired Molly to be heavily interested in community service, and he’s a dancer! Which is just a really fun quirk, hence why I really love both the Ice Princess episode and the Dance Dad episode (asdfghjkl I remember when Tess and I were watching the latter, she was cringing at all the TikTok dances while I was sitting next to her enjoying the song and just being like yeahhhhh get it Pete! Lol). While I do wish we could have gotten a bit of deeper character stuff with Pete, he’s still pretty solid and very enjoyable to watch.

3. Bob Belcher (Bob’s Burgers): we love our autistic Burger King babeyyyyy! Seriously though, while I’ve grown to love all the Belchers, there’s definitely a reason why I gravitated towards Bob first. He’s a mess of a guy who’s just trying his best to deal with all the chaos that life and his family throw at him, and we love him for it.

I love that even while being the most grounded character in the show, he’s not afraid of being a little unhinged and just fucking going off on someone or something. He’s also often the one who’s always trying to help others, even when it’s usually by accident given how much of an introvert he is. He loves his wife, his kids and his burgers with all his heart, and even when he’s at his worst (which is a rarity), you still are rooting for the best for him and want everything to work out. His heart-to-hearts with his kids (and with other characters) really are some of my favorite moments from the show. Furthermore, much like literally all the other characters on this list, his VA’s delivery just adds SO much to his character as well. I really do just love H. Jon Benjamin, he’s so hilarious and needs to voice more characters.

2. Rodolfo Rivera/White Pantera (El Tigre): Ah yes, my first favorite animated dad character, even before Doof. As such, I’m always gonna have a soft spot for this guy. Like I’ve said before, I love how he’s able to be both a goofy and super soft-hearted character but can also be a total badass at times, sometimes without even trying.

He just wants to protect his city and help his son grow up right, and I love him for it! He’s easily one of the funniest characters in the show, but I appreciate that he’s allowed to still be cool and still have a win occasionally. He also manages to be stern without ever becoming unlikable or unreasonable, given that he’ll still always be there for his son and father even when they’re doing things he doesn’t approve of, and I think it’s that overall balance that really endeared me to him, plus his great design+voice (if I had a nickel for every time I gravitated to an Eric Bauza-voiced dad, I’d have two-). His little catchphrase quirks like “okay be good!” and saying Manny’s full name live in my head rent-free, ngl.

1. Bill Green (Big City Greens) let me make this clear… I! LOVE! BILL! GREEN! He’s just… SO great. He’s wholesome, he’s funny and goofy, he’s sweet, he’s a loving father, he’s stern but still reasonable, he’s a hard worker, he’s super relatable, he’s a secret badass, he’s a huge dork, he sings about his truck and is super attached to his wood carvings - he really is just everything and I mean that in the best possible way.

While Cricket and Tilly are obviously the stars of the show, I really do love how much energy the show puts into making Bill this incredibly well-rounded and likable character who you just can’t help but sympathize with and root for when it comes to his farm stuff. I can’t say that he’s perfect, he’s definitely made a couple pretty poor decisions here and there, but overall I think he’s everything I want out of a great animated dad character (probably because he honestly reminds me a lot of my own dad - or at least, the positive parts of my dad). He’s not the only thing I love about BCG, far from it, but he’s definitely one of my biggest favorite things about it.

BONUS HONORABLE MENTION DADS:

- Vasquez (BCG): bodyguards/surrogate dads absolutely count. So happy that Vasquez has become much more prominent and fleshed-out as the show’s gone on, he’s just so great. Thank you Danny Trejo for voicing him, can’t wait for that s4 ep where Vasquez apparently goes to therapy

- Lego Batman (Lego Batman Movie): ah yes, the kick-starter to the Batman/Bat-fam phase I had in college. Fits right alongside characters like Ansel and Splinter for being obviously flawed dads (bro literally called his new son ‘expendable’ wtf Bruce) who still care a lot/grow to become better people over time through the influence of their kid. Will Arnett is still absolutely hilarious as this character, I love how he immediately goes into dad-mode when Robin gets slammed into the windshield, and that bit at the end where he finally tells Robin the truth about his ‘dads’ still gets me a bit teary-eyed

- Wild Knuckles (The Rise of Gru): technically a grand-dad but whatever. Like I said, I love my villains with a soft-side for their kid, and it makes me sad that the Rise of Gru fandom essentially ignored this guy in favor of hot young Dr. Nefario. Like- I don’t care if the arc between him and baby Gru was somewhat rushed, dude literally got himself burned alive by a huge dragon for his surrogate grandkid, he deserves better

perth / chimon series recommendations

are you a newer perth or chimon fan (probably from dangerous romance)? do you want to watch more shows with them but don't know where to start? well i have watched majority of the shows perth or chimon are in and i have a few i can recommend (shortened because once i start i wont stop):

the gifted (2018) and the sequel, the gifted: graduation (2020)

i think this is one of the most well-known series chimon is in but i have to bring it up. set in a high school with a mysterious "gifted programme", it follows the newest batch of "gifted" students as they investigate what's going on behind the programme.

season 1 is one of my top gmmtv series of all time and i think its definitely worth a watch.

the stranded (2019)

after a tsunami hits the island they're schooling on, a bunch of teenagers have to figure out how to survive on their own. not a bl, but perth's character (krit) is dating another man (jack, played by mark siwat). a very strong series overall, though not without its flaws.

i think perth is great here for what little screentime he gets (i also think he looks cute here with glasses). the production is also insanely high quality and the show looks gorgeous.

school tales the series (2022): episode 8

a horror anthology series based in high school. chimon is in episode 8, a walk in school. two friends sneak into school late at night to investigate the school's ghost stories. it is horror, though not exactly the scariest (in my opinion). the other episodes are decent but this one has the strongest writing.

its a short watch, just under an hour but i think both actors (there are only two characters in this episode) are great. the storyline also makes me feel like im being turned into spaghetti

double savage (2023)

two brothers who cared deeply about one another are slowly turned against eachother by circumstance. this one is full of writing issues despite the strong setup and premise HOWEVER!

i did enjoy it because of the strong acting, especially from perth. his character is so pathetic and i say this with love. he is worse than chopper on the Down Bad scale. perth himself seemed to enjoy filming this one quite a lot and he's said that it was one of his favourite roles because of the action scenes

other recommendations

please... siang riak winyan (2017). only 4/6 episodes are subbed but the reason i bring this one up is because perth and chimon we're both in this together! in 2017!!! they didn't have any scenes together so they weren't close but perth knew of chimon from here (and it's what he brings up whenever he's asked about how he met chimon)

home school (2023). i'm more hesitant to recommend this one because i didn't like the ending and messaging but chimon's performance as pennhung was incredibly strong.

vice versa (2022). perth is only in 1 or 2 episodes but i think his character is very pathetic. gmmtv seems to like casting perth as the most pathetic man in the show. i wouldnt say to watch this for perth but as a big fan of vice versa before perthchimon took over my brain i cant not put it here

this isn't a comprehensive list and it's far from everything i enjoyed with them in it (and some of this is very, very subjective lol). i just wanted to put this out here because i love talking about perth and chimon <3_<3

Cyborg 009 BGOOParts Delete (2020) - Volume 3

This manga is clearly meant to be binged and not read extremely slowly like I've been doing, so I'll try to read more at a time to do things properly. I'm still really frustrated that this is such a rehash of tired material. It might be acceptable if this was a reboot, but it's supposed to be more like a sequel/continuation so...

Ch. 15

The monologuing continues! Apollon and Joe talk about their respective squads, what makes them similar and different. Joe emphasizes the fact that the numbers cyborgs resent being made and plan to eradicate all of Black Ghost's cyborgs from the face of the Earth.

Helena asks Francoise to help her stop the fighting, but Francoise says that she can't because she doesn't want to abort the mission. Helena knocks Francoise out and turns into her dark, Artemis form, complete with creepy looking wings jutting out of her cyborg spine. They drew her all sensual this chapter which made me kinda uncomfortable lol.

007, 002, and 006 fight the lesser Mythos cyborgs in the background. They're not given much to do and it's hard to care about their part of the story.

Ch. 16

This chapter was straight up incomprehensible for me. Not only do they shout out some new attack name every two seconds, but half of them aren't even in Japanese or English. Also, a lot of the characters use old timey Japanese. At this point I'm just hear to admire the art.

Artemis' body is now the Dolphin apparently. What is this Arpeggio of Blue Steel??

At least 005 and 008 got some screentime this chapter. Every time 008 does stuff outside of the water I'm like "he's just a dude" lol. The Aquaman conundrum...

Ch. 17

Geronimo's battle wraps up with the Minotaur dude. DAMN that guy was annoying. I think he said "The Dark Labyrinth" about 50 million times. I was so pissed off having to read it over and over lol. Like...shut up already (thankfully, he did).

I really love how Pyunma has been drawn by this artist. He's come a long way. He acknowledged how limited he is outside of the water in this chapter, which I appreciated. Chang comes to his aid.

Ch. 18

Apollon monologues himself to death lol. The dialogue is sooo bad in this manga. They keep repeating the same phrases ad nauseum and it feels cheesy for them to be ranting so much during a battle. Just have them fight in silence and monologue after or something.

In addition to the dialogue being cringey, the action isn't really good either. The Mythos cyborgs keep dying and I keep thinking "wait...how'd they die??" It's not drawn clearly at all. Apollon gets shot up and then set on fire somehow, but they didn't draw Joe doing any of that so I'm like ???

Ch. 19

Okay, Hippo Man making 007 melt was pretty disturbing body horror, I gotta say. 004 then easily takes him out in a pretty boring battle. Hippo man went on and on about his "true name" and they made "kaba/baka" puns. Hey Cyborg 009, aren't comic relief characters supposed to be...funny?

Artemis is pissed at Joe for killing Apollon, but what did she think was gonna happen? This is such a blah retread.

Ch. 20

Lion dude turns into Heracles (which looks like a guy wearing a lion fur and wielding clubs). The cyborgs all gather for their final battle (aside from Artemis probably)

Who was the hairy dude in the beginning? I'm sure I'm just supposed to know who is his but I forgot lol. It's so hard to follow this manga when no one's documented it on the 009 wiki yet boohoo

Joe looked pretty badass showing up at the end there ngl (plus the shippers probably like to see him carrying 002 like that)

Ch. 21

Okay, this last bit was interesting (finally). They talked about how the numbers cyborgs have already defeated Black Ghost and are now just cleaning up their ooparts. Heracles disagrees and says that the Mythos cyborgs ARE Black Ghost because they're following through on their mission.

I had to remind myself what ooparts are. It stands for "Out of Place" parts. It's supposedly an American term, but I've never heard of it. It's related to cryptozoology and refers to anachronistic artifacts. I guess the Mythos cyborgs kinda fit that, but instead of being new stuff in olden times, they're old stuff in modern times? IDK. I wonder if OOParts is a well known concept in Japan or just this mangaka's hobby?

I like learning random stuff from manga. Heracles kept bringing up the Nemean lion so I looked it up and basically it's a lion whose fur was impervious to weapons. Never heard of that myth before! With the added context I appreciated Heracles' design more.

The mangaka's fanart sketches at the end were really charming, I liked their little self portrait too (they didn't need to draw 008's OG design though -cringe-)

I am having so many questions about Earthspark. I know we're only at the mid-season point right now, but there are so many things the show keeps hinting at that keeps bothering me. Obviously spoilers from here.

Like, Arcee's "battle berserker rage"? Is this simply an IDW reference, or is this going to come back later??? I hope to see Arcee and Elita more (and probably interacting with each other too), because they only appear for only some scenes. They need more screentime!

Swindle??? Are we forgetting him? That mech is looking for his brother, who's in jail right now. What is he going to do next?

Where are all the Cassettes, since Megatron releases them??? What are they doing? Ravage seems to be the loyal one, and Laserbeak and Frenzy are looking after themselves. I'm surprised they let Soundwave has 3 Cassettes this time around (and that line about Soundwave accidentally blowing up one of his Cassettes is kinda depressing).

The Seekers??? Holy shit, since Skywarp has her warping abilities, I hope Nova Storm would have a hint of her rainmaking abilities too. I hope to see more Seekers, and I wonder if they're going to do the Seeker trine thing at all. I so hope they at least hint that Thundercracker exists. I don't care if Screamer, TC, and Warp aren't canonically a trine in this 'verse. It'd exist in my head anyway.

I hope we'll get to see more peaceful Decepticons. I don't particularly think it's possible, since the Cons are running away from humans and Bots alike, plus they have to steal energon to survive. I love the fact that there are some distrust across the board here. For some reasons, Bee is assumed dead and he's not working for GHOST like other Bots??? Megatron is the only Con working for GHOST??? Seems implausible but okay? I don't think Megatron is jazzed up about working with only Bots, this man needs more Cons to keep him company lol. I feel that would spice up the whole truce in some way.

missing jatp everyday but missing it harder today!!

I'm always thinking of how jatp would've kept going, so lets dive into those thoughts today.

Julie is supposed to grow up. and the boys aren't. That's awkward for them i suppose lol. my idea is that they wouldn't make the inside universe of jatp last five years, i guess they could last like two, at best. I do think they have potential plots for 4+ seasons, what i would've like seeing would be:

Julie's friendship with Flynn getting even more screentime

giving Flynn more background

a redemption arc to Carrie

a closure for Trevor and the phantoms (idk man just erase him from my sight) along w some more insight into Sunset Curve and its dynamics. (I want the angst of luke calling his childhood best friend a traitor to his face)

Caleb's past and destruction.

A bigger villain. to also get destroyed. (like having villains is not their biggest problem here)

As for the ending. I think alike Jeremy Shada when he said that the ending should go with all of them parting ways and here's how i think it should go.

For Luke, they should go with the ghost magic with no explanation and bring Luke back to life, no, i dont care if its tacky or cliche, i just want a happy ending. would also be really funny if julie and luke only got together at the final season when Luke comes back to life.

For Alex, i imagine him and Willie remaining together as ghosts and turning the old hgc club in a ghost community and look for new ghosts to help them through the after life. Alex once said the after life should come with instructions, what's better having a ghost commune where they can have ghost powers lessons, ghost therapy and support for unfinished business? it'd also be Alex and Willie's little happy never-ending.

For Reggie. Baby is crossing over. After watching his brother heal from the storm of their parents' relationship, spend some quality time being part of Julie's family, having at least one fling, playing with his one chosen family and becoming a legend, Reggie could decide to crossover. and come back as a puppy. (Bc it'd be funny)

For Julie, she's carries on being a star, plays with different bands through her career and if anyone asks her abt her mysterious band as a teen and where those guys went, she plays a joke of "oh, they don't even live here anymore."

Dashi's emotions changing so fast from that laugh to a sad-seeming sigh, and Dashi trying to hide his identity and be along for a bit in general, really hit harder when you think about how this has to be shortly after Chase and Guan left him all alone.

Oh, Actually I wanted to make a separate post about it, but since you've asked I can write whatever I had in mind right here!

First of all, I hear you, my dear anon friend. No Chase and Guan in the first episode exploring the past would make us come to the conclusion their little group fell apart :( It hurts me deeply especially when I see good!chase fighting alongside his friends, smiling ;A; Stupid Bean.

Nevertheless, let's focus on Dashi. The show gave us no insight into how Dashi felt about Chase turning Evil. We have Chase, who was and is still content with his decision; he's living his best life and considers evil pretty satisfying. Guan, on the other hand, tried to 'save his friend' for many centuries but to no avail. And there's Dashi, who during his first appearance mentions nothing about the other two. Then, we see his ghost form and he makes a re-appearance in the last episode. This time with his friends. He seems pretty chill (yeah he trapped Wuya for the first time, so victory time), confident and one may say, with that little screentime the Mighty Trio got, Dashi fights with them as someone who knows their moves and trusts them wholeheartedly.

What a shame there is nothing more revealed about Dashi's relations with his teammates. Seriously, Dashi in the show isn't even allowed to say their names? But maybe this choice of making Dashi a mystery man isn't coincidental? There is a possibility it outlines how disconnected Dashi becomes from anything that's happening in the universe of Xiaolin Showdown.

Bear with me a little while. Dashi’s introduction from the very first episode of s1 is far different than the one in Days Past (e01s02). In e01s01 Grandmaster Dashi was presented as a fable, legend, someone so great he is almost perceived as devine. A hero who saved the world (mind you, no mention of Chase and Guan in the scroll) all solemn in his glory. And then Omi encounters a lazybones who would only sleep lol.

Not only this great warrior acts differently than in the scrolls, but also he’s not comfortable with fame. He shoos people away and wants to give Omi an autograph, so the little monk would leave him be.

There is so little to make out from one episode/ showdown, however we know several things:

1. He’s a light-hearted fella, who likes to prank people

2. Grand Master Dashi? More like PunMaster total disaster

3. And by disaster I mean It was a disaster that most of his clothes turned pink because of Dojo lol

4. he’s the fun guy. He wants to have fun. Children are fun, Omi is a kid…. I just love the way Dashi was messing with him ok? Big annoying uncle vibes.

5. And from that scene, anon mentions we see Dashi acting odd. He told a pun and suddenly went all gloomy.

This change of mood might be attributable to Chase and Guan’s disappearance from Dashi’s life. In my personal headcanon, Chase and Guan would often yell at Dashi every time he made a pun. I see Dashi as an ‘I-seek-attention’ kinda guy ‘but only from those I like’. Dashi keeps on annoying his bros because it’s his love language xDDD and seeing how mad Chase and Guan get – he feels encouraged haha. In reality, the other two adore his antics, although in fear he would act like a fool 24/7 they think they’re ‘toning him down’ by showing displeasure xD

and this game goes on and on.

Without them, Dashi has no one to ‘bother’. Add guilt and knowledge Guan wants to be on his own and every puzzle piece is its place.

Just look at this man. He misses his friends. And I understand him. What's the point of telling jokes if no one will laugh (or get mad) at them? Laughing alone ain't fun. heck, being alone ain't fun. I bet that the only person (ehem dragon) that keeps Dashi sane is Dojo. However, he can't give him what Chase and guan had and that's another issue that's bugging our grandmaster.

When you look at it this way, the story of every person in the Mighty trio bears something tragic. But let's stick to Dashi. I really like fanbase interpretations of Dashi, such as @writerkatsblog's idea that Wuya and Dashi were a couple, which makes Dashi an even more tragic character. Just imagine: your girlfriend turns out to be an evil witch you have to fight. Being a leader ain't easy either. You have to rebuild every village your ex destroys. Yes, you make nice magical artifacts. People praise you, but also put pressure on you and your teammates to end it once and for all. Eventually, you manage to defeat the love of your life. One more sacrifice made. Chase and Guan get more competitive, both feeling inadequate and you don't know what else to do to resolve their conflict. Next what happens really destroys you: one of your friends gets cursed and you haven't noticed. The other one blames you for not noticing. There is nothing else to save, so you let go of that remaining bond, for the greater good. For the greater good, you hide shen gong wu. For the greater good you move into the shadows, writing down revamped version of the story for the next generations. It's only you and your loyal dragon-pet-friend. With every journey, you get more tired showing more and more problems away, but they won't disappear. They pile up until they hit you the hardest. Battles won't satisfy you anymore because you have no one to celebrate them. You joke around as a coping mechanism, but there is no joy to that if you don't share a laugh with those you consider close. You suffer more, for the greater good.

So, In my personal opinion, Dashi chose to die as the ultimate ' I can't deal with this anymore' surrender. That's why Guan is nice and fine and alive, while Dashi appears in the ghost form in the present times.

Given that, I agree with anon it really hits harder when you look at that fading smile. It's the smile of someone who has lost everything and is afraid that he can lose more even though he has nothing left. Yet another example of a successful person who, in reality, is most unhappy. I bet that's why he despises people recognizing him in the crowd. To some extent, he doesn't want that recognition in order to not get overwhelmed by his 'fans', but the real reason he prefers to remain anonymous is a bit of shame mixed with grief. After all, the best battles Dashi took part in were with people he should have long ago forgotten about. The problem is, he can't.

To sum up, Dashi is a man of contradictions: starting from how he decided to lie here and there to leave his comrades out of the story with Wuya and ending with his tendency 'to toss problems away' (just look at all the shen gong wu. Now the monks have to collect them with the help of an old dragon and scroll, no other means of guidance from Dashi) Ultimately he realized he's the biggest problem, so he got rid of himself, also in the name of the greater good.

Very gruesome way to finish the post, but yeah that's my take on Mr jokester with a tragic backstory. Thanks for reading it!

Just yesterday I got to see Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and... WOW. I have a LOT of thoughts about it.

I clarify that I am not a cinephil, much less a professional critic, and I am not very good at analyzing things in depth either, so I am only going to give my opinion of what I thought.

Spoiler alert!!

First of all: Lars.

I LOVE LARS. HE IS REALLY COOL. I LIKE HIM.

But I have a problem with him, even though I like him, and that is... it's obvious that they want to bring Egon back. You can tell they want to make Lars the new Egon, but it doesn't work. First, because you already have a literal clone of Egon (Phoebe). Second, because you simply can't replace Egon. Egon is his own character.

Another thing that bothers me is that there are many characters. I mean it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a little tedious.

There have been some attitudes of certain characters that I feel don't fit their personalities. For example, Phoebe sounding like a whimsical little girl from time to time. I also felt Podcast was a little emptier.

But if we talk about good points, GOD

It's OBVIOUS that Phoebe liked Melody, I mean the Ghostbusters have been gay forever but this is EVEN GAYER AND I LOVE IT. Plus everyone acts at least 50% more autistic than before. The guy of the library (cant remember his name) looked gay as hell too.

They have a new barracks!! bigger, newer!! But the fire station is sacred iconic and they KNOW it.

The fan service, GODDD. PURE. GOLD. THANK YOU.

The OG Ghostbusters had more screentime this time and that is a GOAL. I love watching them being old men doing old men stuff.

I liked Nadim's character, he reminds me of Janosz Poha, from Ghostbusters II, but with a pinch of Ray's goofyness.

Last, some specific moments that i loved:

Tokoyami in BNHA chapter 327 and a rant about Hawks (SPOILERS)

Since Tokoyami has a lot of screentime here I feel like I needed to talk about him.

Here is Tokoyami, casually calls out Bakugou without giving a damn.

Even when he gets splashed he didn't event jolt while Koda and Sato did. He just don't give a fuck at all. What a madlad.

Also this is the first time we see Tokoyami has his feathers wet. Usually it's just straight even in the rain.

Then we have Tokoyami sitting next to Iida, wishing that Deku could have ask Hawks to pick up his phone. That small cloud on Tokoyami head is telling us that Tokoyami is fucking PISSED at Hawks for not answering his calls.

Which is very understandable. Even I'm pissed.

Even Mina said he's pissed.

So because Tokoyami can't called Hawks, he ask All Might to tell Hawks to at the very least email him. That's all he wants.

Then we get to see Tokoyami again when Jiro drag him along with the othe band members.

Momo and Tokoyami = Got pulled normally.

Kaminari = Got pulled by the neck, got chocked probably.

Bakugou = Got drag by the shirt.

I found it funny how Tokoyami get's the same treatment as Momo lol. Yes Tokoyami is a good boy so he got pulled normally.

Just want to say how Tokoyami looks pretty here. That's all. I love him. That's all.

The band is back together. Tokoyami being the introvert he is just stands there. Menacingly. His face just go all " Ah ok we're doing this again."

It's hard to know if his happy or not. My thought is that he's still angry because of Hawks. Kinda sad.

Although the scan here makes it hard to notice, Tokoyami actually has a big scar on his foot:

Now my rant:

(I'm letting my anger out here so I'm sorry that I'm going to say mean things about Hawks)

This is mainly on how Hawks is treating Tokoyami.

Hawks is a dick. I said it.

He didn't even give a single thought about Tokoyami throughout this arc but then we have Tokoyami just want to call or at the very least, get a text from Hawks.

I do think I should blame the writing, they should at least put one panel about Hawks thinking about Tokoyami then I'm fine with it. But no. He didn't even thought about Tokoyami at all in this arc. Which is frustrating.

Imagine risking your life saving someone you love and care for, but then that person you save didn't even talk to you anymore after that.

It could be because Hawks doesn't want Tokoyami to get himself into harms anymore with how the last time we see them together was when Dabi is injuring Hawks. So that's why he wants to distant himself from Tokoyami.

But to be honest that's fucking stupid. If anything it'll cause more trouble to Tokoyami. Hate how it looks like the trope of "I don't want to hurt you anymore so I'm distancing from you and not talking to you at all".

Please Hawks don't be a fucking dick to Tokoyami he doesn't deserve the ghosting treatment. He fucking saves your goddamn ass for fuck sake.

There's still a chance that there's a flashback to justify why Hawks being an asshole. The ghosting treatment is just so wrong with how important Hawks is to Tokoyami and vice versa.

So yeah, if I see Tokoyami lashing out on Hawks when they meet up again, it'll actually be very understandable.

hold on a second i just realized the whole thing with vriska and the breath players on a wider narrative level is basically a "north wind and the sun" thing, except with the roles of those elements swapped

as in: vriska spends her entire screentime trying to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, and to be The One Who Makes Things Happen. she pushes tavros and john around for this purpose, but in the end she only gets what she wants out of them when she gives up, letting them embody their OWN aspect instead

to tavros, she tries to FORCE him to grow into his potential via violent sink-or-swim north wind tactics, and eventually tavros takes it to heart- but it just never works out the way vriska wanted it to, all it does instead is stunt tavros' personal growth by convincing him to tackle everything with the same north wind strategy- which, i mean, it's tavros... the guy CANNOT do that, he can't even bring himself to believe it deep down

with john it works out better, mostly because instead of trying to force him to be more like her, she just hassles him to act her own will through him by directing him the entire way, which suits john just fine! he's just swapped one light player guide for another, and since the way john's aspect manifests in him being rewarded by the narrative for going with the flow, it ends up with john god tiering and doing exactly what needed to be done with pretty much no resistance. of course the prototypical breath player would welcome north wind tactics and go with it like a dandelion

but in the end, it really doesn't have much of a long term influence on john as a person- not in the way vriska kept trying and failing to pull with tavros- and the next time they meet properly, john gets his Narrative Contrivance McGuffin Delivery from his fellow breath player (who lost it because he was actively looking for it), and he doesn't get much useful out of vriska until later, the NEXT time they meet, where despite growing quickly disillusioned with her as a person, he is once again guided towards yet another mcguffin, this time deliberately because there's two light players in there and one is a sylph lol

speaking of which: the clearest manifestation of the north wind and the sun thing with serkets and breath players is the two objectives of Ghost Pirate Quest, and how those wound up resolving: the ring and the army

let's start with the blatant dramatic irony regarding the ring: if vriska had just accepted the random ass ring that a random ass guy gave to her as a proposal, she would have straight up just bypassed the whole entire adventure. ofc that could not have happened because it would be dumb and narratively meaningless, but that's the thing- she could never have accepted it BECAUSE light inherently rejects the narratively meaningless- at least, it rejects the things that SEEM narratively meaningless

instead, the breath players, who are all about the random blessings that the narrative brings to their doorstep, though in different directions (bear with me i'll elaborate on that later), fumble with it and eventually it ends up in john's posession. HOW the christ it entered the story is irrelevant- for narrative purposes, tavros taking it is what established it as a Thing, and john recieving it (...even if only via teen idiocy skfndj) is what established it definitively as Something That Exists In The Narrative.

whatever the case: eventually, aranea serket happens. and she pulls the ultimate North Wind fuckery with that thing

first off, aranea, the sylph of light, is the one to give it narrative weight; aranea at that point had mostly served as an exposition mouthpiece, which was The Joke with her, but narratively, it means her monologues work as a way for the story to fill in information of important narrative weight, without having to explain where exactly that information is even coming from

as a thief, vriska doesn't HAVE information of her own; what she finds, she usually has to claw out of the world with teeth and nails, (which once cost her an eye or two or seven). rose, as a seer, also seeks it out, but it tends to come to her more easily, and her mistake is usually just not questioning the source of said information.

but aranea, partly thanks to being a more minor character who spent her entire life and most of her un-life offscreen, embodies being a sylph of light by being basically a conduit through which information is introduced into the story for the first time; it's not relevant HOW she knows the things she knows, just that she WILL impart as much unfiltered Lore as the story needs :v so it is THROUGH aranea that the ring is first given in-universe importance; in-universe she's just revealing information that already existed about the ring, but from a narrative standpoint she is the tool used to GIVE that ring a background and function. she's the sylph of light, she shines light into the narrative where there previously was none, that's what she does

and for a while, she seems content in that role... up until she reveals she's not, because Serket Controlling Tendencies, and goes FULL North Wind brute forcing the narrative with knowledge and fate.

which. doesn't exactly go well for her

as a matter of fact, it doesn't go well for anyone, because being a sylph of light means her actions are NARRATIVELY COHERENT and thus all the godtier deaths stick and this whole mess is accepted as the alpha timeline, at least at first. aranea is the ultimate embodiment of a character who is all narrative function and practically nothing else, a tool for exposition, and as such when she uses herself for her own goals in steering the story as she sees fit, she succesfully advances the plot right off a cliff while vriska learns from her mistakes (and she IS learning, she can act above it all as much as she wants but i don't believe for a second that she didn't make those realizations about how much of a terrible idea it is to use the ring to do That in the exact moment aranea did it; earlier she was literally getting mad at tavros for losing that same ring)

for now, let's talk about john's Deus Ex Machinification

so, vriska sees the clusterfuck, and gives up on the ring, and aranea being gone means the pirate quest also fails on the other side of things (and BOY will we get back to the Mind Control Army plan.)

i've talked before about how i think breath as an aspect is the domain of narrative contrivance; pretty much everything in john's arc is comprised of stuff happening TO him, he keeps getting powerups and being just in the right place at the right time. the kid is literally blessed by the power of Being In The Right Place At The Right Time... and as i've mentioned before, this is kind of the exact opposite of vriska's approach to life. vriska tends to take Not Knowing Things as unbearable, and is in constant pursuit of the safety of certainty, but john really seems to never even stop to consider that sort of thing. he lives moment to moment without knowing what the hell is going on 80% of the time, and that tends to work out well for him

the big reversal, however, that forces his turn from someone just blessed by breath into someone who also EMBODIES it, is when he starts getting pinballed all over the (Right) place (And Right Time)

this, which once again he stumbled into by accident guided by light players, puts him in the position to BECOME a conduit for narrative contrivance, in the same way aranea was a conduit for lore exposition; but it's crucially important for this whole plot beat to land that we see him grow into it, get yanked around, fuck around with the mechanics at random and by accident- unlike aranea, who is allowed to pull her information from literally nothing, john needs to be put through this onscreen and give the audience time to acclimate to this being a thing he can do: because this, with the context of everything else about john's story ever, is the only way to sell the Big Retcon.

if so far john had been just drifting around in the wind, being magically taken places and having the plot delivered to his doorstep, this marks the point where the story demands he BECOME that wind for everyone else, running counter to the overwhelming predestination at the core of homestuck's narrative up to that point

i don't think it's a coincidence that roxy is the one person to accompany him on that whole journey, since void is the other aspect that doesn't really give a flip about the established timeline of things that must/will/have happened

and similarly, it's not surprising that terezi is the one to set the course for him- for the first time since way back then when she got him killed and vriska took over guide duties, the one leading him by the hand and the narrative as a whole isn't a light or time player, who are concerned with the things that are set in stone and certain, either narratively or mechanically, but by someone whose domain, despite leading her to the same conclusions, DOES allow for an understanding of how the thing that weaves that thread of fate is individual actions, that the universe may be functionally deterministic but is made and chosen every moment, thus making her the single best person to put at the helm of the creation of q timeline that breaks with all established rules of what can and can't be changed

anyways ive gotten offtrack

my point is: vriska spends so much screentime fumbling and clawing her way back into the narrative, north wind-ing the hell out of it in every way she can think to do until someone else succeeds and makes her realize that the brute force method is never gonna work

you know what approach DOES work?

it sounds odd to call this the sun, but it's effectively what it is: the narrative running its course to fix things, via terezi making slight adjustements and john going along with it despite not understanding their purpose. just allowing things to run their course. vriska was going to come back, she HAD to come back, but she couldn't BRING HERSELF BACK; that was never going to work.

she could only get her wish as a gift carried by the breeze.

(in the form of a punch)

(and yes, i know they are technically different vriskas, but my point is more in terms of general character themes and what the narrative does and doesn't reward)

bringing it back to the other half of it:

meenah spent a while trying to recruit people to the ghost army, but when that didn't work, the serkets shrugged and went full control, literally. they probably figured it just made sense, because making a ghost army was the plan and there was just no other way to get from point A to point B without brute forcing it

but in the process, guess what vriska finally gives up on?

vriska repeatedly says- and i think BELIEVES- that what she did to tavros throughout act 5 was because she wanted to toughen him up, to FORCE him to face challenges way too steep for him and come out stronger, which makes sense considering her entire life and philosophy. in a way, she's trying to do with him what she does with her dice with her god tier powers, cut out the uncertainty and get right to the best result, force him to claw his way to self-reliance the way she did

but the thing with tavros is that like i said, this just Does Not Work. as a breath player, boxing him in and forcing him to go the hardest possible route Because I Known Better is the worst possible thing you can do to him, as we see time and time again throughout act5 and their dream bubble interactions. tavros just becomes a worse person by trying to mimic her, and yet he doesn't actually improve or even make her happy, and eventually she loses interest in him and just carries him around like a lackey, until he gets fed up and fucks right out of the narrative.

the thing about pages, i think, is that with the right conditions, they BECOME their aspect for other people, for better or worse. so if breath is the aspect of contrivances and blessings being delivered when the story needs them, it makes sense that, ONLY when vriska (both of them) have given up entirely on tavros and stopped wanting or expecting anything from him...

he shows up with the exact miracle she needed, delivered without issue or resistance, and made possible not with the forceful howling of the north wind, but with the warm natural light of the sun.

(and then tells her to eat shit. godspeed, tavros)
