This was written for Sangcheng Week 2023

Jiang Cheng's shift as a Customer Service Agent would start in less than 10 minutes, and he liked to come in with enough time to turn on his computer, log into the VPN and maybe get himself a coffee from the break room if he was feeling tired that day. Predictably, only 2 minutes before their shift was due to start, Nie Huaisang arrived, greeting him with a breathless “hi hi” and sitting at the desk right next to his. If you were to ask him, he and Nie Huaisang couldn’t be more different. Or: Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang work together at a call center.

For SangCheng Week Day 6 - The theme is WATER. This is inspired by a post I saw on Tumblr some time ago about guys meeting on Grindr but instead of sexy chat, one needs help fixing something. So here we are!

Summary:

Jiang Cheng, in his 40s and newly divorced, has begun questioning who he is and what he wants. At the prodding of his best friend and sister, he's downloaded Grindr and made a profile, but it's been harder than he thought to get up the nerve to begin looking at profiles. Once he does, the first message he gets isn't a pick-up line or a dick pic - it's a request for help.

Plain Sight

            If you asked them before the events of Guanyin Temple, any of the Nie disciples would have told you that they knew their sect leader was up to something. Hiding papers, purposefully messing up paperwork to distract his ‘elder brothers,’ mysterious purchases, humming snatches of unknown songs, sneaking out of the sect to visit other sects – it wasn’t subtle. That’s what made the whole – temple thing – so embarrassing. Everyone had known that their sect leader was up to something. It's just that everyone assumed when he was sneaking around, it was because of his 'secret' affair with Jiang-zhongzu

SangCheng Week 23 day 1... WIP?

My brain decided to come up with an idea for day 1 at 6 am this morning. General theme is Occasions, and I made up my own prompt (book signing).

Jiang Cheng loved spending time with his nephew.

Not for nothing had he earned the titles of favorite uncle and even best friend (he’d had to get used to sharing that one with Lan Jingyi once Jin Ling started first grade). He was very proud that jiujiu had been Jin Ling’s first word, much to Jiang Yanli’s amusement and Jin Zixuan’s envy.

So of course he’d immediately offered to take Jin Ling to the local bookshop that Sunday morning, for reading and book signing by his favorite author. It would be fun, he could spend the morning with his nephew, and even pick up a new thriller he’d read about.

Jiang Cheng had, in fact, been looking forward to it all week. Right up until Saturday evening, when Jiang Yanli sent him a link to the event’s information. He’d opened the link, scrolled past the colorful illustration of a boy and his turtle, and found himself staring at the photo of the author.

Because he knew that face. He recognized the mischievous smile and wide eyes, even though it had been years since Jiang Cheng had last seen him.

Heart beating alarmingly fast he forwarded the photo to Wei Wuxian, his oldest friend.

“Who does that look like to you?” he texted.

The reply came through a couple of minutes later. Jiang Cheng was still staring at the picture.

“That’s Nie Huaisang! Hadn’t you seen recent pictures of him?”

Jiang Cheng ignored the question. Obviously not. “He wrote Jin Ling’s favorite book series.”

This time the reply came almost immediately. “Oh right! Didn’t you know he became a writer?”

“No. Going to his book signing with Jin Ling tomorrow.”

“😂 😂 😂”

Jiang Cheng didn’t bother replying.

He barely slept that night, thinking about a summer almost twenty years ago. Nie Huaisang had been going to the same summer camp as he and Wei Wuxian for three years. The shy boy had been assigned to the same cabin as them their first time there, and they had become inseparable. That third summer, Jiang Cheng had slowly come to realize that what he felt for Nie Huaisang was more than friendship. He’d never really had a crush on anyone before, and it had taken a while for him to figure it out. He’d tried to hide it, sure that if Nie Huaisang figured it out, it would ruin their friendship.

It hadn’t. They had been each other’s first kiss, two nights before they were set to go back home. They’d promised to write and call, and for awhile they had.

But that had been their last year at summer camp, and it was their last year of middle school, and Nie Huaisang’s father had goten sick, and they had simply drifted apart and lost contact. He’d never seen Nie Huaisang again. To be continued...
