Shooting propaganda commercials helps Alfred forgive himself for repeatedly fucking a commie. It balances out that way (that’s what he keeps telling himself).

His guilt about it is pretty puritanical, because every morning-after when Ivan has gone, without fail, he calls his boss up while scarfing down breakfast and asks for another gig. He is always on the plane to Hollywood by the afternoon.

“You look just darling, Alfred,” Miss Makeup Artist coos. She is caking powder over his face as the hairstylist, who always fails to tame Nantucket, combs over his bedhead. “I wish my skin was as smooth as yours. And you just have the longest lashes!”

She’s kind of an ass-kisser, but Alfred likes getting his ass kissed.

“Oh, shucks, really? Everyone is always telling me that…” Faux modesty. What he really means to say is, compliment me more.

Miss Hairstylist jumps in, while straightening his front fringe with a flat-iron, “Why, yes! And your eyes are just so blue, like sapphires. They’re dazzling!”

He laughs warmly back at them, cheeks lighting up a rosy pink. The boy is a virginal romantic at heart, still. Cue waving his hand flippantly. “Stop it! Really, now!”

“—Mr. Alfred, they need you on set, stat!” A chipper intern with a headset and clipboard is obnoxiously waving him over.

Alfred stands, finally, when the last bit of lotion and powder are rubbed into his face, and his hair has been straightened like sheets of ice. “Well, duty calls!”
