The Magic of Christmas Part 6/8
Angst up ahead. Sorry. I had to rough things up a bit so they didn't get together too soon. But hey, at least it's Halloween. And yes, this was actually something my friends and I used to do for Halloween. It was fun.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
***
October in the Midwest was as beautiful as it was harsh. The temperature would take a sharp decline around this time of year, and if you weren’t prepared you could get caught outside in cold ass weather in a light jacket with no gloves, no hat, no boots.
In short, Steve in this moment.
He had gone off to work assuming it would be as warm as it was the day before. But no. Mother Nature had decided that summer was officially over, autumn was a fleeting season, and that winter was here.
So yeah, he was fucking miserable. He spotted Robin all nice and cozy and protested.
“How did you know it was going to be so cold?” he whined.
She rolled her eyes at him. “The weather app on my phone?”
Steve cursed under his breath. “It was literally sixty degrees yesterday, how am I freezing my balls off?”
Robin made a face. “Ew.”
A dark grin took over his face.
“What?” she asked as he inched closer. “Whatever you are about to do, don’t.”
He pounced and managed to get his cold hands under her coat close to her skin and she shrieked, trying to get away.
He chased her trying to warm his hands up.
Eddie arrived a few minutes later to find them rosy cheeked and laughing their asses off.
“You didn’t have to wait for me outside, you know?” he said, tugging on Steve’s sleeve to guide him toward the doors that would lead into the restaurant.
Robin peered around him as though she was looking for someone. “Chrissy not coming?”
“Yeah, sorry,” Eddie said, “Her finance professor decided that he was going to have pop quiz tomorrow and only gave them two days to study for it.”
Steve grimaced. “I bet it was Callahan. That guy’s an ass. Especially if there are more than three girls in his class.”
Eddie tilted his head to the side. “That’s right, I forgot you must have gotten your business degree if you’re running your own business.”
“Worthless as it is to actual fucking business,” he groused.
They walked into the restaurant and Eddie immediately clocked why they had been waiting for him outside. It was hotter than the Devil’s tit in here and it was crammed wall to wall with people.
“Reservations for four under the name Harrington,” Steve said when they reached the hostess.
She scanned her list. “No one under that name for tonight.”
Steve frowned. “Today is the 11th, right? It is six o’clock right? How is my name not on the list?”
“I’m sorry, sir,” the hostess said briskly. “There is no one under that name for six o’clock.”
“How about Buckley?” Robin asked, stepping forward.
She scanned her list again. “Nothing for six.”
Eddie frowned. “Okay, then for what time?”
The hostess blinked at him. “Excuse me?”
“You clearly have a Buckley on your list,” Eddie explained, “as you didn’t say no to the name, just the time. So what time is the reservation for?”
“Well,” the hostess said with a sneer, “if you can’t remember the time, how do I know you are the Buckley that made the reservation?”
Robin pulled out her ID and handed it to her. “It’s under Robin Buckley for tonight, if not 6pm then 6:30pm.”
The hostess took her ID and looked from it to her and then back again several times. She sighed heavily. “Yes, we have a reservation at 6:30 under that name.”
They were shown to their seats and sat down.
The food was terrible, the service was worse, and the prices for the food were exorbitant for what they got.
Steve left the bare minimum of a tip, roughly eighteen percent and they were chased out of the restaurant by a screaming server demanding more tip.
“Well that was horrific,” Robin said as they all huddled inside Steve’s car, waiting for the cops to arrive so that they could get the screaming lady away from them so Eddie could get to his van and Steve could drive off safely.
“And who’s idea was this anyway?” Eddie hissed. He had never been treated that badly by anyone in his life. And he was a metalhead in high school.
Steve ducked his head down. “It was mine. But I had heard nothing but good things about it from my colleagues for weeks. I just want to do something unique.”
“That was unique all right,” Eddie growled. “Getting yelled and chased for leaving a decent tip. Congrats, zero for ten would never do it again.”
“I’m sorry!” he cried. “It’s never happened to me before either.”
“Whatever.”
Just then the cops arrived and the server went dashing back into restaurant the second she saw them. They talked to Steve and got his information and his version of events. Ten minutes later, Steve and Robin were on their way home in silence and a very pissed off Eddie was on his way back to his place.
*
“Edward Allen Munson!” Chrissy snapped after Eddie told her about his night. “Are you seriously telling me that you think that Steve, your Steve would deliberately take you to a restaurant were they were rude to you, the food was bad, and then proceed to get chased out said restaurant to humiliate you?”
“Not when you say it like that,” he muttered looking down at his hands.
“You think?!” she screeched. “How could you possibly think that of Steve?”
Eddie picked at the thread of the rip of the knee of his jeans. “It was a lapse in judgment, okay! I don’t really think of him like that! I don’t. I–I don’t.”
“So do you want to tell me what was going through your head?” Chrissy asked.
“All the times that I got made fun of for the way I dress,” Eddie muttered, “the music I liked, the games I played, the art I drew. I could see it all happening again like it was in slow motion.”
She threw her arms around his shoulders. “But Steve isn’t like that. He hired you for you. Your art, the way you dress. Then he liked you as a person. A person who made him laugh, who drew him out of his shell, who looked him in the eye and said, ‘I won’t hurt you.’ Only you did, Ed. So much.”
“I’ll make it up to him,” Eddie promised.
“You better.”
*
Only two days later Robin messaged him to say that one the charities he was on the board for just got indicted for fraud and that for the next couple of weeks Steve was going to be living in the office until got it figured out.
But apparently the universe was out to get Eddie because the next thing he knew Steve was on his way to London because one of the companies Steve’s own company had been trying to buy for literal years was finally willing to sell.
So off Steve went. And Robin went with him. Leaving behind two very bereft artists.
It was getting close to Halloween and Eddie was getting worried. So he called Robin.
“You guys will be back in time for Halloween, right?” he asked nervously. “I’m not DMing a one-shot in your house if you guys aren’t in it.”
“We’re working on it,” Robin promised. “It’s just one of the original owners is dragging his feet on one sentence in one paragraph. And it’s stupid and pointless.”
He sighed. “I’m sorry. That does sound bad.”
“I’ll keep you guys posted,” she said firmly. “We’ll make it back even if I have to shank the old bastard.”
Eddie laughed feeling easier about the Halloween party.
“I’ll be your alibi,” he said with a grin.
“You’re on!”
*
They barely made it in town by the 29th. Steve was running on two hours of sleep and bleary-eyed when he fell into bed that night. Robin had insisted that they stay up until at least nine to avoid jetlag.
Something that Steve struggled with mightily, but sleep was bliss once he was allowed to crawl into his bed.
He woke up at eleven the next morning, still tired, but finally alive enough to function beyond zombie-like.
Robin and Steve got to work cleaning the house. Technically Claudia and Dustin lived there, too. But she had recently started dating again and spent most of her time at his place. So in the house hadn’t been lived in during the two weeks they were gone.
They got the dining room set up for the game and then went shopping. Steve was going all out.
He bought ingredients for pizza and as many toppings as he could think of. Sausage, ground beef, bacon, peppers, onions, mushrooms, ham, hell he even grabbed pineapple in case someone wanted it. He was also making two different kinds of sauce. A white cheese and a marinara.
He got everything prepared and in the fridge, then tomorrow he was going to make the dough.
“You have really outdone yourself,” Robin said patting him on the shoulder. “Those little shitheads better appreciate your hard work.”
Steve scoffed. “They won’t.”
“True,” Robin said with a laugh.
*
Eddie wasn’t sure what he thought of Steve’s house. At least from the outside. It was very post modern and a little ugly.
But when he was led in, he fell in love with the place. It was warm and welcoming and so soft.
If Eddie had been a writer he would have spoke to the metaphor of the house being like Steve. Looking pretentious and aloof on the outside, but warm and inviting on the inside.
The guilt from the last time he saw Steve burned in his gut. He had railed against judging a book by its cover for so long, that he forgot what that actually meant.
“So are the kids here yet?” Eddie asked as she took his coat.
Robin shook her head. “Not yet. But they should be in about a half hour. Steve wanted to give you time to set up before they got here to ‘deepen the surprise’ as he called it.”
Eddie grinned. “Lead the way!”
She lead him to the dinning room with the long oak wood table. It was gorgeous.
“We don’t usually eat in here,” she said as he set up. “There’s a lovely little breakfast nook in the kitchen that’s better suited for our eating needs, but I figured that you’d want more space for your game.”
“Brilliant as always, Birdie,” Eddie said, kissing her cheek.
“Oi!” Steve said from the other door to the dinning room. “No stealing my lesbian. You have one of your own.”
Eddie threw his head back and laughed. “Yeah, yeah.”
Now that the door was open delicious smells came wafting through the air.
“Holy shit, Stevie,” he gasped. “What are you making? I thought it was booze and pizza tonight, nothing fancy.”
Robin laughed as Steve ducked his head.
“This guy do anything simple?” she asked mockingly. “Never!”
Steve rolled his eyes. “Homemade just tastes better than fast food.” He turned on his heel and walked back into the kitchen.
“Only because you’re a food snob!” she crowed after him.
Eddie shook his head. “I’ve never gotten why people can be such snobs about food. It all comes out the other end in the end.”
Robin snorted. “That’s be we both grew up poor. Steve didn’t have boxed mac and cheese until he moved in with me.”
“But boxed mac is the best!” Eddie protested.
“Only if you haven’t had his grandmother’s mac and cheese. It’s made in a casserole dish with bread crumb topping and extra cheese sprinkled on top at the end for extra gooeyness.”
Eddie straightened up. “One moment please.”
He walked into the kitchen like a man on a mission. “You sir have been holding out on me. You have a grandma approved mac and cheese recipe and you haven’t shared?”
Steve who had started the rant confused, threw back his head and laughed. “Sorry, Eds. I’ll bring to the next movie night. I promise.”
Eddie nodded and then turned on his heel to go back to setting up the D&D game.
Once everything was set up and they were just waiting for the kids to arrive, Eddie took time to suss out how badly he had fucked up.
“You are going to still join us, right?” Eddie asked chewing on his lower lip nervously.
Steve crumpled. “I want to. I do, but I’m so tired.”
“You would have been so tired if you had ordered pizza like the rest of us heathens, you know that, right?” Eddie said, bumping their shoulders together.
“If I’m being honest,” Steve said, scratching his cheek, “I wasn’t sure if you’d still wanted me to.”
Eddie threw his arms around him and sighed. “I’m sorry, Stevie. Of course I want you here. It’s sometimes I get locked into the us verses them mentality and forgot that you aren’t like that.” He tilted his head to side with big smile. “Plus we get to freak out your goblins not once, but twice if you play.”
Steve blinked for a moment. “Nope, you’re absolutely right, that is a fantastic idea.”
Eddie grinned. “You can play until your first death and then you can go to bed. Robin and I will handle it from there.”
“Sounds like a perfect plan,” he said with a smile.
They were close, so close. All it would have taken was to lean forward just a little and they would have been kissing.
But of course that was when the Party decided to arrive.
Steve got down their pizza orders and popped them into the oven. Then he lead them to dining room.
“Why are we eating out here?” Mike asked. “I hate that long table, it makes me feel like a peasant in a king’s castle or some shit.”
“Robin is making the drinks,” Steve said, “which means she needs the full bar to make them. There’ll be a menu and each of you will be given cups with lines on them. Once you hit the top line, it’s water and soda for the rest of the night. Do you understand?”
Everyone nodded. Even Mike. They knew that Steve had risked a lot of clout with their parents for this and they did not want to blow that for him.
Suddenly Dustin was tugging on Steve’s sleeve. “Why is Eddie Munson in our house?”
Everyone else turned and looked at the head of the long the table. Sure enough, there was Eddie, waving at them.
“Settle on in, my stalwart adventurers,” Eddie greeted warmly. “Your D&D accouterments are over by the door. You’ll have ten minutes to get ready and then we’ll start the haunted forest one-shot campaign for five.”
Everyone looked around and counted off.
“Are you playing and DMing?” Lucas asked, tilting his head in confusion.
Steve walked over to the door and pulled out a set of brightly yellow dice and sat down next to Eddie. “Nope.”
And suddenly there was pandemonium as they realized that Steve was playing with them.
Steve ended up playing the whole night, having been sucked into the story telling. After it was over and Steve was curled up with Dustin on the floor of the living room where everyone was camped out in sleeping bags including Eddie and Robin, Dustin thanked Steve.
“This was awesome, Steve,” he murmured drowsily. “You didn’t have to do this.”
“I knew how upset you were about not being able to meet him,” Steve said, “especially since I work with him all the time for the charity.”
Dustin lifted his head. “So you came up with this as a way to make up for it?”
Steve hummed.
“Thanks, Steve.”
“You’re welcome, bud.”
As they drifted off to sleep, Eddie smiled to himself under the comfort of his sleeping bag. Yeah, Steve was a good dude.

Holy shit! I'm watching Red Dwarf on Tubi and I've only heard the bare minimum of this show being "it's good" and "it has a cult following". Going into the show knowing fuckall, this show is GREAT. I'm on episode 4 of the first season from the 80s and I AM SO IMPRESSED in SO MANY WAYS. Here are some intriguing elements of Red Dwarf that you may want to know:
The introduction from the ships computer episode two gives you the best synopsis of the show:
'This is an SOS distress call from the mining ship Red Dwarf. The crew are dead, killed by a radiation leak. The only survivors are Dave Lister, who was in suspended animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat, who was safely sealed in the hold. Revived three million years later, Lister's only companions are a life form who evolved from his cat, and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram simulation of one of the dead crew. I am Holly, the ship's computer, with an IQ of 6000, the same IQ as 6000 PE teachers.'
Up to speed? Interest? How about this:
1. Three main characters and two of them are black. That's right. An 80s British science fiction comedy tv show that has black characters.
2. It's hilarious! And the comedy hasn't aged much! It also is STILL ORIGINAL. They've covered some fun things on this show I haven't seen handled in the same way anywhere else.
3. Short episodes! The first season is 6 episodes long at 30 mins run time! Like what are you even waiting for this is three hours of your life and I think you'll enjoy them!
4. It's free on Tubi. You have to do so little to test run this show!
5. If you are used to the appearance of 80s shows, it looks pretty good! The opening theme is really pretty! Lots of practical affects too (some good some bad but if you enjoy campy shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and quirky choices with puppets and reclaimed materials, you'll feel at home.)
Seriously! Give it a try!

There's been a lot of discussion about Splatoon 3's content updates, and the quality of Splatoon 3's content updates, in the community recently, so I thought I'd give my two cents on this as well.
I think people view Splatoon 2's updates, which through the first year saw one weapon or stage release every single week, through very rose-tinted glasses? There was certainly excitement in knowing you had something to look forward to every single weekend, but since it was only a single weapon a week it kind of intrinsically meant that most of the community got something they didn't care for, most often than not. Something like an alternate Glooga kit is very fun for Glooga players, but most people aren't Glooga players, and as such they waited for nothing. I think it's very indicative that Nintendo swapped away from weekly updates almost immediately after Octo Expansion dropped in favour of dropping weapons in monthly batches with the Kensa and Sheldon's Picks.
Also, I don't think people remember just how bare-bones Splatoon 2 was on release? There wasn't a single Brella in the game at launch, despite them being shown off in the Direct. Actually, that's a lie, because you could play Brella in Hero Mode, but it took them three weeks to add Splat Brella to multiplayer despite it being in the game since the beginning. In fact, out of Splatoon 1's 33 Main weapons, 9 weren't available on the release of the game, meaning that in 2017 most updates were main weapons that were just straight up missing from the game.
There's also the matter of Salmon Run. Aside from the monthly gear and new stages (of which there were three in Splatoon 2's two year of content updates), Salmon Run got nothing new added to it post-launch. With the launch of Sizzle Season we'll have as many Salmon Run stages in 3 after nine months as Splatoon 2 did after twenty-four.
Splatoon 2 only got three major content updates through its live period between 2017 to 2019, a number we're within days of matching within a period of nine months, and we're going to get at least five more of them. I think more than anything the real source of discontent is that three months is a lot of time to wait, and it feels even longer if you've been unlucky enough not to get a new weapon you like yet, but in terms of overall content quality there is not a doubt in my mind that Splatoon 3 is doing better than Splatoon 2 did, and is going to keep doing better for a lot longer.
That is not to say that Splatoon 3's content updates have been perfect. If there's one thing I agree with the critics on, it's that the way they've handled new kits so far has been less than ideal. The problem is both a question of quantity as well as variety. Fresh Season and Sizzle Season both added 11 kits each, and I really feel that 12 should be the bare minimum, and if anything it should be 2-3 more. That said, the real problem is what weapon classes have been getting (or not getting, as the case may be) those new kits. There's been 36 new weapons added post-launch, including Sizzle season weapons as well as the new main weapons, and out of those, 13 have been Shooters. meanwhile, there's only been a single Brella and a single Splatana, and not a single new Stringer kit yet. Couple this with the fact that Shooters are by far the weapon class where the main weapons play the most similarly to each other, and I think that this is what leads, more than anything else, to updates feeling lacking.

THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING GILMORE GIRLS: S3/EP4/ONE’S GOT CLASS THE OTHER ONE DYES (PART 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luke and Lorelai both have "unique" approaches to conducting business, I'll give them that. This chapter was rough for me to write for some reason and then I LOST my draft partway through and had to rewrite everything! Some things that are happening:
-Lane attempts to initiate a conversation with Mrs Kim about her new band. She loses her courage before Mrs. Kim presents her with applications to strict Christian colleges. -Michel suggests that the honor of being named a Successful Person in Business is a low bar to clear when Lorelai's only business competitor in Stars Hollow is a presumably homeless and/or mentally ill fellow who scours the streets for change with a metal detector. I mean, yeah, he has more ambition and a better work ethic than Lorelai does.
-Luke is reluctant about the speaking gig and Lorelai threatens to embarrass him by singing badly in public if he does not comply. He may as well refuse since she's going to embarrass him on a daily basis no matter what he does anyway? -Luke says he went to Stars Hollow High for three years. Huh? I thought he's lived in The Hollow his entire life? High school is four years long. Did he move, drop out or graduate early? No explanation was given at this point in time.
Tumblr media
-Luke has "no good memories" of high school. Join the club. -Luke asks Lorelai if she's ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. No, the answer you're looking for is no. She is unmedicated and dangerous.
Tumblr media
My beloved Tomatos Sign is missing! You'd think it was because after 3 years the prop department noticed the spelling error and took it down to fix it. You would be wrong. It'll return shortly to be Tomatos for several more years. Should I ask that Valerie Campbell lady (as "key set designer" is her title, I believe) why it took 5+ years for someone to notice one of the most visible props for the entire run of the series had a spelling error?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lane is interesting. Yes, she is naive in many ways, that's a given with her upbringing. But she is also painfully self aware and highly intelligent. She is definitely not stupid. She fully realizes how desperately boxed in she is by her neurotic mother. She makes the effort and takes risks to live life on her own terms even though it usually seems futile and AmyShermanPalladino is always lurking around a corner waiting to shatter all her hopes and dreams. Rory on the other hand is such a pathetic people pleaser and so desperate to keep her mother happy that I think she's blind to the fact that she's actually in a similar situation, Lorelai just masks it under the veneer of being a "cool young mom" and Rory is content to remain more stagnant. I have more thoughts on this subject but let's not make this into a rambly mess. On with the ShitCircus.
I can't believe it looks there's another fucking festival going on in the background. I am grateful some of these seasonal events exist because it helps me keep track of where we are in the year. There's pumpkins, it's fall, the Thanksgiving episode is still a ways away so I can assume it’s early October and Rory would have just had her 18th birthday.
Tumblr media
Lane and Rory on their way to harrass Queen Shane at her place of employment. Minimum wage in 2002 was $5.15, by the way. Look at that Rory, someone your age has a JOB that makes MONEY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stars Hollow, the land where nobody has seen a tv show produced after 1975 but the references to modern pop and rock music flow like wine.
Tumblr media
Alexis really does have some spectacular defeated/fed up with everything facial expressions in her acting playbook.
Tumblr media
Sure her customer service skills aren't the greatest, but if Lorelai Gilmore is allowed to leave work in the middle of the day to shop for coffins then Shane should be allowed to read a Seventeen behind the counter and ignore Rory. Her manager, Cynthia, is pretty chill and will look the other way if Shane slacks off. Reminder that while Rory knows who Shane is, Rory has barely been a glint in the corner of Shane's eye. Any time that Shane and Rory have shared the same space, it's been when Shane runs into the diner, makes out with Jess, and doesn't look back. Because she is a god damn superhero.
Tumblr media
It's unlikely Jess and Shane ever use their tongue for talking either so I doubt Jess has told her who Rory is. So to Shane Rory is just some random customer who is staring at her weirdly like she's trying to melt her with her eye-beams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that exemplary customer service. Better crown her Employee of the Month now, before Jess offs her and throws her in the lake next month.
Tumblr media
Dirty white aprons with tomato can accessories are the newest sensation on the 2002 Paris Runways. Luke Danes, fashion icon. Time to go to class. Lorelai is there to play Fashion Fairy Godmother. Upstairs we go to get him out of that sweaty flannell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's so filthy. L&L barge into the apartment without knocking to find Jess in the middle of pulling up his pants. Walking into any room that a teenage boy might occupy is a risky game, but Interruption seems to be Lorelai's biggest kink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know Jess is just a poor little street urchin but can we get him some clothes that fit for once? In 2002 Milo was so smol a stiff breeze could have blown him away. He's wearing a belt and it's not working. Those pants are so baggy they could fit 3 Milos in them. Not that I would mind if his pants fell down. Looks we're on Gilmore Girls Time today, where down is up and right is left as Luke and Lorelai are about to give speeches at Stars Hollow High in the middle of the school day but Shane, Lane, Rory and Jess are not in school and no one cares, so it's Who The Fuck Knows O'Clock.
Stars Hollow High: Jess is not graduating because he never went to class. Luke: How could I possibly know that? Jess settles into a chair with a chemistry textbook. Our Child Labor Kingpin here Luke Danes tells him to go help Cesar downstairs. Jess says his education is more important than Luke's desire to use his nephew for cheap child labor. Luke disagrees. Luke goes to change in his bedroom leaving Lorelai, Jess, and a cloud of awkard silence to mingle in the other room. Luke has a book on his shelf called "Forty Days" but i can't find anything with that title. It sounds kinda erotic, tbh. Lorelai says she's gone swimming with Luke and has seen him shirtless before. Que? Jess: Have you seen him with his shirt off lately? He's really let himself go. Lorelai: *Sneers and ignores him. (to Luke): And lose the baseball hat! Jess: I think his head will fall off without it. Lorelai (snarkily): I think he'll be okay. You wanted Jess to talk, right? You're going to continue bitching to everyone you know that Jess Mariano only speaks in grunts like a caveman unlike your little fucking English scholar there Dean Forrester, right? He just lobbed you two funny quips in a row (and you love funny quips!) but now you're silent and giving him a dirty look and a nasty attitude. WHAT DO YOU EVEN WANT, WOMAN? MAKE UP YOUR MIND! WHY SO SILENT QUIPPY! WHAT DID THIS CHILD EVER DO TO YOU!
Tumblr media
I'm just gonna sit here and read my little Chemistry book, and one day I'm gonna make 40 kajillion dollars when my books are made into blockbuster movies, and I will own you, Aunt Lorelai. I will own you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lorelai doing the Fry squint at Jess when he asked if something was wrong, because she refused to make conversation with him.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Gilmore Girls Time. Let's stop the clock for a minute here. Moments ago, Shane was at work. She rang up Rory and Lane, and they left immediately. The scene then cuts to Lorelai entering the diner and then after he gets a brief lecture about his clothing choices, Lorelai and Luke start to head upstairs so he can change. In order for Closet Girl to be Shane, her shift would have ended seconds after she finished with Rory and Lane, and then she would have to immediately run down the street, sneak upstairs to Luke's apartment without him noticing and would only be seconds into servicing Jess as Luke and Lorelai are about to walk in PLUS he would need time to hide her in the closet and pull up his pants and appear cool calm and collected. I know Shane is a slutty superhero but could she really put that off in just a few minutes? Conclusion? It wasn't actually Shane in that closet and Jess has a rotation of girls who skip school with him to service him in his uncle's closet.

I am still not sure how much I can explain well but for now the gist is that the girls are all childhood friends, despite having different backgrounds/upbringings.
Charlie (OC)'s father is a solicitor for the royal family which puts her family in the nouveau rich category. Sora's father is a very high ranking military official who doesn't spend much time at home. Both Charlie and Sora are very rebellious (considering the time period lol) and do not get along well with their respective mothers at all. Mimi's father belongs to the nobility but with her mother often falling sick, he lets her run free and act as per her wishes very often. Hilary too has a noble background but both her parents pass away at a very young age without proper heirs assigned so the royalty takes back her property and she grows up with a disinterested grandmother caring for her in a bare minimum fashion.
Save for Mimi, the other three girls are set to debut in the same season. Mimi is not very happy about having to wait a whole year in joining her best friends out in society, so she does attempt to manipulate her father into letting her debut early quite a few times but it just so happens that her mother's health is in a good condition on those days and she doesn't end up succeeding.
Charlie doesn't want to get married, but wants to inherit her father's soliciting business which her mother is against. When she's forced to debut, she decides to create a scandal around herself to get herself out of the marriage race and sort of doom her chances of being courted for a long time so she can focus instead on secretly studying to take over her father's work.
Sora is also not very interested in the idea of marriage and she enjoys designing/stitching clothes. But her mother is against the idea of a military officer's daughter running her own boutique, so she's eager to get Sora married off as soon as possible. Not having the will to drag her own family into a fake scandal like Charlie, she instead decides to chop off all her hair right before her presentation in front of the queen, hoping to seem more tomboyish to keep potential suitors at bay.
Hilary thinks her life couldn't possibly be more tragic but her grandmother too passes away a week before the presentation. Mimi's mother is feeling healthy at the time and offers to sponsor her for the day, and although she's dressed the most plainly, the Queen does praise her appearance which puts her in the spotlight. (Sora's mom thinks that if Sora wouldn't have cut her hair she would be the one to receive the praise and gives her shit about it for quite a few days lol) Hilary is unsure whether she's pleased with this because she does get a lot of attention from suitors and marriage would mean finally leaving behind her financial struggles, her romantic nature makes her keep her hopes up for a love match.
And all you need to know about the boys is THAT THEY'RE 1000% CERTIFIED SIMPS FOR THEIR LADIES, NO PERSONALITY OR DEPTH WHATSOEVER JUST KISSING THE GROUND THE GIRLS WALK ON FOREVER.
Jk, jk but not really, putting the plot details under the cut. Just fyi that the last names will be different, more victorian and this will follow the same logic as most of my crossovers where Tyson (Beyblade) and Tai (Digimon) are brothers.
Charlie, Sora and Hilary make their debut in society together with the spotlight being on Hilary instantly, despite of her being completely unprepared to handle it. Charlie is not looking forward to having to go through a bunch of suitors and maybe find the guy she's looking for after so many attempts. Sora just wants to escape whatever plan her mother has hatched up for her, long enough for her father to come back home so he can support her choices.
Kai, a distant relative of the Queen and Prince in line of whatever kingdom, is in town after some time away and is awarded the title of the most eligible bachelor the minute he sets foot in public. He's not happy with all the people swarming him constantly, and is even more disappointed to find that the Queen is planning to set him up with who she thinks is the best debutante this season, Hilary. He spends his time at parties, skirting the corners and hiding in the shadows where he runs into Charlie. When Charlie finds out about the Queen's plan, she knows that Hilary is too overwhelmed to handle a courtship like this, so she makes a proposal to Kai. The two can fake a courtship for the entirety of this season, after which Kai plans to go back to his travels abroad. When he's leaving they can stage a dramatic break up, where Charlie's reputation can be ruined just enough to keep her out of the running for the next few seasons. Although Kai is reluctant at first, but when he sees that Charlie really doesn't care about scandals and such, he agrees, and the two create a shocking ripple by dancing together at the Queen's ball - which dissuades the Queen and also takes the attention off Hilary so that she can finally breathe.
While Hilary is fully aware that the only way for her to secure a future with money in it is for her to find a decent match, when she's chosen as the Queen's "favourite" of the season, she ends up being tied to the centre of the society with no room for imperfection or mistakes. With only a few decent dress to wear to such fashionable events, she knows she has limited opportunity to find a husband. She does appreciate all the men approaching her without any effort on her behalf, but half of those have not read as much as her and the other half are too old for her liking. She is grateful to Charlie for taking the Prince off the list for her, because she could not imagine faking another conversation that night, when the attention moves on to the latest attractive event, she makes her escape to get home and try and figure out just how she would get money to go on attending these parties. On her way out, she bumps into someone, and the other party ends up spilling wine on her only very good dress. Completely overwhelmed by the events of the night, she goes off on the stranger, not knowing his name or title, even if his face feels oddly familiar, and then stomps out in tears.
The next morning, she is visited by the Dowager Viscountess Godsworth, she shares that when she was younger she used to be very close friends with Hilary's mother, and when she noticed Hilary at the Queen's Ball she wanted to share how much she resembled her mother with her. Hilary hosts her for tea, though embarrassed by the state of her rundown lodgings. Lady Godsworth offers to sponsor Hilary for the season, as a gesture towards her late mother but Hilary is stubborn about accepting charity. It seems that the Viscountess is equally unwilling to accept a refusal, so instead she suggests that Hilary provide guidance to her daughter Kari, for a decent fee. She explains that Kari had always been sick since she was a baby and the doctor advised to not let her travel far, so Kari never got a chance to go to finishing school and was very much unprepared to debut next season. Hilary decides that since she would actually be working for the money, and doing something she's good at, she accepts the offer and the following week she arrives at the Godsworth House.
There she is greeted by the eldest son, Tyson, who also happens to be the same man she shouted at a few days ago. Realising it was too late to back out now, she keeps her head down as the Viscountess introduces the two of them, and pretends to meet him for the first time. While he doesn’t call her out on the lie, she notices the smug look on his face when his mother turns away, and figures out that her job won’t be as easy as she assumed. She is introduced to Kari, and the two get along well, years of experience in trying to keep all her friends in line benefits Hilary and she’s able to connect well with the young girl. Her lessons are supervised by the Viscountess but Tyson often crashes them unannounced, poking at her by raising contradictions against everything she says, arguing with her on the more philosophical part of her lessons. Hilary's glad that sweet little Kari is blessed with such a progressive minded brother, but she does not appreciate him butting heads with her and often ends up arguing in support of notions she herself dislikes, always leaving the Godsworth House more huffier and restless than when she arrived.
With the help of Sora, some of Hilary's mothers older dresses are repurposed for her usage and she spends her nights attending parties and events with her friends. She realises that having Kai next to Charlie gives the girls a chance to relax and have fun talking with each other since most people are too nervous to approach them. The few times she does have a conversation with potential suitors, she finds it completely drab in comparison to her arguments with Tyson, she finds herself often hoping to run into him in the evening, outside from his house, where there would be no familial duty or job requirement binding them and they could freely express their true feelings to each other. But to her disappointment, he rarely attends these events, occasionally stopping by to greet important people briefly, spare a dance with his mother and then leaving without even looking in Hilary’s direction.
Meanwhile, the fake courtship is working out well for Charlie, with Kai’s help she’s able to spend her time studying at the palace library under the ruse of spending quality time with her suitor. When her Aunt Nancy (Matt/Yamato’s mom) is visiting the city for a weekend, she overhears a conversation between her parents and her Aunt about an upcoming two week long reprieve at the Stonefield Manor (Ishi (stone) da (field) = Stonefield GEDDIT?). Her mother suggests to Nancy that they should invite Hilary as a potential match for Matt, so Charlie warns her friend beforehand. Hilary makes up a lie about not being able to travel, and instead Charlie has Sora and Mimi tag along with her.
Since a lot of other young boys and girls have joined the party, Mimi being the oldest out of the lot ends up babysitting most of them throughout the two weeks. She can’t complain to Charlie because it took a lot of convincing on her friend’s behalf to let her parents to allow her to travel so she suffers in silence, until she runs into Matt. Although Matt had visited his cousin Charlie in the city often, he never met her friends in person despite hearing about them, so he doesn’t recognise who Mimi is. Seeing this is an opportunity, Mimi lies about her age to get away from all the boring kids and befriends Matt during her stay at his manor. The two are fans of the same composer so they quickly connect over music, spending a lot of their time hiding inside the manor and playing the piano together.
Charlie and Sora are not so lucky in escaping what is required of them at such an event. But since Kai agreed to join her for the reprieve, Charlie loudly declares that Sora will be their chaperone and the three are able to get out of most activities planned by the parents using this strategy. Because they also spend a lot of time avoiding the main areas of the Stonefield manor, they coincidentally never run into Matt and Mimi hanging out together.
When the hunt is planned, Tai shows up to invite Kai to join and meets Sora for the first time. Sora expresses her wish to join the hunt as well, but Tai just laughs it off saying that with Kai joining they’d have enough men as was the custom. Kai, who has been slightly confused about his feelings towards Charlie recently, thinks that if he helps out Sora, Charlie would surely think highly of him. So he pretends to be a little sick, urging Tai to let Sora join the hunt in his place. Tai finds it hard to argue with him, considering the hierarchy, asking Sora to do some target practice and if she performs well, the hunting party would consider letting her join.
Sora, the daughter of a military man who raised her like a son, obviously outshines everyone at the practice and is allowed to accompany the men for the activity. Tai is awestruck and captivated, and after spending time with her that day, he’s obsessed with making her fall for him. Sora is very flattered but she also knows that her mother would turn up her nose at the idea of her marrying the second son so to say. She’s also afraid that marrying into nobility would only lead to more restrictions and duties, stopping her from pursuing her dream of having her own boutique. She tries to avoid all of Tai’s advances, keeping things friendly between them as much as possible, but he’s persistent with his approach throughout.
When everyone is in the country side enjoying the fresh air, Hilary still continues giving lessons to Kari at the Godsworth House. Happy that her schedule is not running as tight with no evening parties happening for the time being. Since the Viscountess accompanied Tai to the reprieve as well, Tyson is stuck supervising the lessons as the ‘head of the household’ and sweet but not so innocent Kari is very happy with this situation. She was quick to catch on to the tension between her tutor and her brother so she spends a lot of time coming up with ways to make them end up in embarrassing situations with each other. When the two weeks are almost coming to an end, Kari insists that the only way for her to know if she’s good with the piano would be to see if people enjoying dancing to her music. Tyson, unable to turn down a request by his little sister, and Hilary, bound by her duty as a tutor, give in to her demand and end up dancing together for the first time, which ignites a lot of feelings in both of them.
The party at the countryside begins to wrap up and Mimi prepares to tell Matt the truth about her not being out in the society, but that’s exactly when he shares that he has decided to join Charlie in the city for the rest of the season. Their conversation is interrupted and Mimi never gets the chance to tell him the truth. Matt ends up in the city later and attends one of the balls where he’s surprised to find Mimi missing. That’s when Charlie tells him about Mimi still being young, which shocks him. Since he’s hurting and angry over the lie, he goes to Mimi’s house and tells her parents about how she lied while she was away, carefully omitting the part that he was the man she spent so much unsupervised time with. Mimi’s parents are angry of course, and they forbid her from leaving the house for the rest of the season.
After a few days when Matt has calmed down, he regrets his actions but when he goes back to Mimi’s house, he’s not allowed to see her. Mimi is also overtaken by the guilt she feels over lying to Matt so shamelessly, and she ends up writing an apology letter where she pours her heart about feeling left out and just wanting to enjoy this period of her life like her friends were. At the end she requests that if he decides to forgive her, she would be happy to show him around the city next season when she is officially out. Charlie is tasked with delivering the letter to Matt, but is unable to hand it over to him directly. Not thinking too much of it, she hands it to her Aunty Nancy instead, who is aware of the situation.
Nancy opens the letter and reads it before Matt comes home. She knows that if Matt read the letter he would shut himself off in the country again for another year, spoiling her plans to get him married, before next season. So she ends up destroying the letter, and eventually the two head back to their manor to receive another set of guests she has invited, that includes an eligible woman she hopes to set Matt up with. Mimi on the other hand thinks that Matt was too arrogant to accept her apology, and though she is heartbroken, she decides to move on, setting her sights on preparing herself to debut as the Queen’s favourite next year so she could pick anyone she wanted as her husband.
***
So this is all I have for now. I have to think about how to tie all the loose ends.
Tai has to win Sora’s parents over and make her see that a life with him would award her more freedom than she could ever dream of. Tyson and Hilary have to put their stubbornness and their obsession with their duties aside to really talk to each other and understand why they are always so drawn to one another. Kai and Charlie need to figure out if their fake courtship is really as easy and fake as they thought it would be, or if the element of pretence is wearing off and real feelings are starting to seep in. Matt and Mimi need to come face to face next season, and see how much they have changed over the time they’ve spent apart.
If I do end up making a coherent ending, I’ll definitely post an update! If you read it till here, I hope this 2.9k worth of idea dumping was worth your time, thanks for sticking around 😆

Day 23: Sleepless Nights
Dean 11:31 Hey sorry to text so soon But did you pick up an ID with my face on it after dinner?
Cas 11:39 No, but the restaurant called me a half hour ago. They found it while closing up, and they had my number on file from when I made the reservation.
Dean 11:42 Thank god
Cas 11:42 My apologies; I was going to leave you a message in the morning, as you mentioned needing to get up early. Also, what do you mean by “so soon”?
Dean 11:44 Dude Its been two hours since our date How soon do you consider too soon?
Cas 11:45 I’ve never given it much thought.
Dean 11:45 Seriously?
Cas 11:48 I text when it feels right. I don’t have a numerically-based system.
Dean 11:50 That’s insane.
Cas 11:51 Well, Dean, what’s your system, then?
Dean 11:52 24 hours minimum 1 week max unless they’re batshit Usually averages out to 3 days
Cas 11:57 What do you mean “batshit”?
Dean 11:57 You know Psychos Nut jobs One sandwich short of a picnic Dudes who say their spirit animal is Elon Musk
Cas 11:58 That’s an impressive array of synonyms, but it doesn’t actually give me much information.
Dean 11:58 Seriously??? Ok then Like, the guy who tried to pressure me into a threesome with his ex cause I’m bi Or the lady who practically drank a whole bottle of wine by herself and yelled at the waiter because he didn’t refill our bread basket
Cas 11:58 I see what you mean.
Dean 11:59 OR that guy who mentioned he was casually into cannibalism??? Who the hell drops that on a first date. Glenn Close wannabes, that’s who
Cas 12:00 I’m astounded you had that many bad first dates.
Dean 12:01 Those are only from this year!
Cas 12:01 That sounds horrendous.
Dean 12:02 Heh. Cannibal guy gave good head, so there’s that. Dude knew his way around some man meat, if you know what I mean
Cas 12:02 Unfortunately, I do. Excuse me while I wait a full week to text you ever again.
Dean 12:03 C’mon, I didn’t even tell you about my worst first date!
Dean 12:14 Cas?
Cas 12:18 Go on.
Dean 12:18 Thank fuck, I thought I actually scared you off
Cas 12:18 Despite appearances, I don’t scare easily.
Dean 12:19 For a nerdy dude in a trench coat, you’re made of pretty stern stuff, I’ll give you that
Cas 12:21 Thank you?
Dean 12:26 Don’t mention it ANYWAY worst first date in the history of first dates: The setting: Los Angeles, California, August 2017 Our hero, the dashingly handsome PA, Dean Winchester, has a date with a slightly less-attractive but still stunning guest star from episode 24 of Dr. Sexy, MD who will die three episodes later from a cerebrovascular infection of her spinal cord.
Cas 12:27 Technically, doctors should only use “Dr” or “MD”, not both. And that diagnosis makes absolutely no sense.
Dean 12:28 Shhh DSM had to let go their medical expert due to budget cuts in the 15th season
Cas 12:28 I cannot believe the abbreviation for that show is DSM.
Dean 12:28 Huh?
Cas 12:31 In the medical community, whenever you hear DSM, they’re almost always referring to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Dean 12:34 Hahahahaha Maybe I should buy a copy for the set Then they’ll get SOMETHING right
Cas 12:34 I hardly ever call any case hopeless, but in this case, I might make an exception.
Dean 12:36 Yeah that checks out But nobody watches DSM for the medicine The other stuffs the compelling bits
Cas 12:37 They'd better not be. It's a gross misrepresentation of the medical system. Firstly, their sterile fields leave much to be desired. I had to pause in the middle of the intubation scene.
Dean 12:42 Hold on You actually watched DSM??
Cas 12:44 Of course. You mentioned you worked on the show when we met. I'd be a poor date if I hadn't watched at least an episode.
Dean 12:44 Oh my god you did homework for our date tonight??? You're such a nerd
Cas 12:45 Dr. Nerd, MD, actually.
Dean 12:46 Ha! You're still Dr Sexy to me
Dean 12:46 Shit that was the stupidest thing I've ever sent. Forget I wrote that.
Cas 12:47 I think it's flattering :D
Dean 12:48 Thank fuck
Cas 12:52 It wasn't only to prepare for our date. You obviously care a lot about the show, so if I couldn't stand it, I figured it would be a good indicator of our compatibility.
Dean 12:55 Holy shit. I never thought about it like that I used to tell people it was a guilty pleasure
Cas 12:56 What changed?
Dean 12:57 I got the job on set and everyone there doesn’t treat it like a dirty little secret Sure they know its stupid and shit, but it’s fun, stupid shit
Cas 1:00 I’m glad you like your job.
Dean 1:00 You don’t?
Cas 1:11 I like the mission of my job. But some days the death, pain, and petty workplace grievances make me question my choice. I chose emergency medicine because I was under the impression it required fewer people skills. I thought I would see more acute cases of broken bones, gunshots, burns, etc. But these days, half of my patients use ER doctors as their primary physicians because they can’t afford regular doctor visits for their chronic conditions. I even have a few “regulars”, which I never anticipated having.
Dean 1:12 Damn That sounds brutal
Cas 1:13 Not to mention my hundred thousand dollars of student loan debt.
Dean 1:13 Jesus Sammy’s in the same boat between undergrad and law school
Cas 1:14 But not you?
Dean 1:20 I never went to college
Cas 1:20 Good.
Dean 1:23 What?
Cas 1:25 It seems you didn’t waste your money or time, as you’re in a profession that makes you happy and supports a lifestyle you’re making work.
Dean 1:25 I guess so. I just never figured you’d be all aboard the high school drop out train
Cas 1:31 Usually no, not unless the person has a clear path ahead of what they would like to do instead. My brother transferred from a prestigious liberal arts college to a trade school for plumbers, and he has had no greater joy explaining to my uptight parents the latest thing he pulled out from a client’s septic tank.
Dean 1:32 He sounds like a riot
Cas 1:33
He also makes a killing. Apparently an equal number of people need doctors as plumbers, to my parents’ great chagrin.
Dean 1:33 I like him already
Cas 1:35 You’ll like him until he short sheets your bed and locks you in the wine cellar during dessert so he gets the whole Black Forest gateau to himself.
Dean 1:36 That’s HILARIOUS
Cas 1:38 I almost wet myself, Dean.
Dean 1:38 And you think that makes it less funny???
Cas 1:43 I should have known older brothers would take each others’ side.
Dean 1:44 Damn right It’s in the big brother handbook
Cas 1:49 Did you terrorize Sam too?
Dean 1:52 No And whatever he tells you about itching powder, a farting donkey, and superglue is totally a lie
Cas 1:53 Never mind. I don’t even want to know.
Dean 1:58 Yeah, nobody came out the winner that time Sammy always gave as good as he got though But you seem like the kind of goody two shoes who wouldn’t get your big brother back like he deserved
Cas 2:03 I was worse as a child. It didn’t help that Gabe had an almost preternatural ability to anticipate retaliation. My choices of pranks were never particularly inventive, so he saw them coming from a mile away.
Dean 2:04 So Gabe is a plumber with a sweet tooth?
Cas 2:05 Yes?
Dean 2:06 You got any other ammo on him?
Cas 2:07 He also has an extensive porn collection of vintage Casa Erotica VHS and goes to some annual pornography convention in Vegas. My parents didn’t cut him off for dropping out of college because they were well aware of his alternative and, in their mind, Gabe chose the lesser of two evils.
Dean 2:11 Holy shit, Cas That’s what you LEAD with
Cas 2:12 Excuse me?
Dean 2:19 Next time you’re at his place, you’re gonna swap out half those VHS for Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood or Nut Cracker or a Nova documentary Just total boner-killers. He won’t see it coming. Heh Literally
Cas 2:20 Truly?
Dean 2:22 I don’t see why he would
Cas 2:23 Thank you. I might actually take your suggestion.
Dean 2:25 Do it! And then tell me how it goes. Sammy’s all the way in Seattle, so we haven’t had a real prank war in too long.
Cas 2:27 Aren’t you a little old for such childish behavior?
Dean 2:30 You’re older than I am!
Cas 2:31 I’m making up for lost time.
Dean 2:32 You’re unbelievable. Alright, Marcia, if you want to play it that way See if I help you when Gabe hides your stethoscope or dyes your white coat pink in retaliation
Cas 2:35 … he dyed it bright yellow, actually.
Dean 2:36 HAHAHAHAH
Cas 2:37 I looked like a YIELD sign.
Dean: 2:39 Please tell me you have pictures
Cas 2:43 I do, actually. IMG_215
Dean 2:44 What’s with the black stripes?
Cas 2:45 I added the stripes for Halloween last year. I was a bumblebee.
Dean 2:46 Damn Not even a sexy bumblebee?
Cas 2:49 Ah, but you can’t see what’s under my doctor’s coat.
Dean 2:50 An even smaller bumblebee costume?
Cas 2:52 No…
Dean 2:53 Don’t do this to me Lingerie?
Cas 2:55 I wore SCRUBS, Dean, because I am a medical professional.
Dean 2:58 You’re such an ass What are you doing this year?
Cas 2:58 I was thinking of wearing my usual coat and scrubs.
Dean 3:01 Booooo
Cas 3:02 What are you going as, then?
Dean 3:05 A cowboy! Tenth year in a row, baby. If it ain’t broke, yadda yadda yadda
Cas 3:06 But, having recently seen a new medical show, I was thinking of adding cowboy boots to my standard getup.
Dean 3:08 No way
Cas 3:08 Do you by chance have a spare pair I could borrow for Halloween?
Dean 3:10 Hell yes I do! But Shit, I have a 5am call time tomorrow Today? Fuck. I think I have to cut his convo short
Cas 3:11 Oh dear My apologies for keeping you so late! :o
Dean 3:14 Not your fault at all dude
Cas 3:15 I never even heard the story of your worst first date!
Dean 3:18 How about I tell you over dinner Friday? 7PM work with you? You chose the place last time, so I’ll pick this one
Cas 3:18 It’s a date :D

While it's still March 31 on my side of the globe, I think I should talk about Yumi's Cells and Daily JoJo. My all-time favorite Webtoons.
Because I was big on Webtoons in 2020-2023.
And I was especially big on these two. (Just look at the "Funny" page of Yumi's Cells on TVTropes. I've logged funny moments for almost every episode, even if many of them are a stretch.)
Spoilers for both of them up to S3, Ep. 5 of Daily JoJo.
Disclaimer: I'm not well-versed in Korean culture, so pardon me if I mess up anything.
I also haven't gathered every piece of information about the passage of time, so consider these the minimum amount of time passed.
So in S3, Ep. 5, Anna says that Jina is older than Woong.
Tumblr media
Jina says she's 35 three months before the present time. (Wait, did they change how age works in Korea? I thought everyone's age is tied to the new year... And is this international age or Korean age?)
Anyway, how old is Woong?
Tumblr media
32 in Korean age (international age plus 1). We know that Woong is most likely the same age as Yumi. (If he wasn't, they'd point out that he wasn't.)
Before the time skip, Daily JoJo takes place around the same time as the "Shall We Dance" arc of Yumi's Cells.
Tumblr media
Going by just Yumi's breakups alone, it's more than three years from the beginning to her final break-up with Babi. (They take about a month of break)
Tumblr media
And then about two years from that break-up to when she meets Soonrok. (The left screenshot flashes forward while she's still with Babi, while the right flashes forward from just before she meets Soonrok.)
Tumblr media
So after the beginning of Daily JoJo/the "Shall We Dance" arc of Yumi's Cells, there's about a year time skip to present-day Daily JoJo. (I haven't accounted for any time passage in Season 2, though)
Tumblr media
So age 32 + 3 years + 2 years + 1 year (all rounding down)
... and that makes Woong at least 38.
(Huh. I thought my math would have brought it to 39. I must have missed something.)
So unless I missed something big, Jina is not older than Woong.

More Degrassi asks for whenever you want to answer! 1. Three or four unpopular Degrassi opinions - the more unpopular, the better! 2. Two or three Degrassi couples most fans really like who you're meh or ugh about 3. Two or three Degrassi couples most fans don't like much who you love (spoiler alert: my answer for this one would be Jenna/Connor...please don't hate me! The underwear thing was a horrific choice by the writers, but otherwise I love both lof them individually and together so much. It's so lovely to see someone 'on the spectrum' in a loving romantic relationship, and imo he is actually who she needs and deserves after KC!) 4. Your top seven female Degrassi characters? 5. Your top seven male Degrassi characters? 6. If you could choose to bring just three Degrassi characters back from the dead, who would they be?! Enjoy - I can't wait to see your answers...and feel fere to mock me for loving Jonnor ;)
Thank you for the asks!
Unpopular opinions:
1.) While I don't ship Spinner and Emma, their marriage is far from the worst thing Degrassi ever did. The timing made it all very questionable, but it seemed like Spinner and Emma found each other at just the right time. If not for the marriage itself, I don't think most would have such a big problem with them ending up together. Even though Emma's relationship with Sean was far more popular, in a lot of ways I actually think Emma and Spinner were more compatible. Maybe not for most of their run on Degrassi, but definitely during their last four seasons or so. If there's ever a reboot and those three characters return, I don't want to see Sean and Emma ending up together unless the writing can justify it. But based on how their relationship was written during season 6, I doubt they could.
2.) The definition of suicide is the act or instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally. Therefore, Zig couldn't have murdered Cam and bears no culpability in his death. This shouldn't be an unpopular opinion, but I still hear this ignorance on a monthly basis. It's been almost eleven years. This is ridiculous.
3.) Nine times out of ten, Ashley is correct and 100% in the right. It's just that many fans find her boring and she's consistently pitted against more popular characters played by more charismatic actors (Craig, Jimmy, Manny, Paige). This includes but isn't limited to Ashley dumping Jimmy because he was being passive aggressive and admitted to only considering her attractive on the inside as well as wanting to record and pursue music independently of Jimmy.
4.) Even though I prefer Drianca, the Clare/Drew relationship was one of the best written and executed ships during the later seasons. The writers did a fantastic job building up their feelings for each other and showing how they balanced each other out. It was a complete copout to drop their relationship entirely just so that Clare could end up with her slut shaming, misogynistic, emotionally abusive, overrated ex.
Popular couples I don't ship:
1.) Miles/Lola (They fucked once while his boyfriend was in a coma. Lola's whole thing was not wanting to be someone's second choice. Miles did the same "You're the only one that understands me" song and dance with four different love interests)
2.) Eli/Clare (See my fourth unpopular opinion or just watch seasons 10-14)
3.) Cam/Maya (They're sweet for what they are and I loved Maya's arc, but overall it was a very brief relationship that left Maya with a lot of trauma and negative feelings towards Cam. Also, Zaya was right there. That made it impossible to invest in them)
Unpopular couples I ship:
1.) Clare/Drew (once again, see unpopular opinion #4)
2.) Dave/Alli (Dave was actually a good character and deserves twice as much nostalgia and appreciation as Johnny DiMarco gets for doing the bare minimum. No, they weren't perfect, but Dave unlike most Degrassi cheaters put in the work and effort to win back his ex's trust. I think they loved each other. The timing was just wrong and to be honest, they probably weren't meant to be)
3.) Tristan/Miles (To be honest, I'm currently having some complicated feelings about these two due to being in the middle of a Next Class rewatch and being forced to realize the biphobia was even worse than I'd remembered. But, the simple fact I still technically ship them and the response to admitting you do in the present day is frothing at the mouth and shame means they should be included. For what it's worth, I liked them in season 13, enjoyed the potential in 14, and have positive memories of their second relationship)
Nooooo! Jonnor is amazing! They're one of the sweetest, purest couples on Degrassi. Connor struggled to understand social norms and handled his hormones in a questionable way, but he also didn't have the guidance at the time to figure that out. He left Degrassi to get a grasp on that, so I think it's forgivable. We see during Connor's relationship with Jenna that he's learned a lot and is overall a very respectful, considerate boyfriend to Jenna. I also strongly agree that Jenna deserved better than KC.
Top 7 female characters:
1.) Manny Santos
2.) Maya Matlin
3.) Alex Nunez
4.) Liberty Van Zandt
5.) Bianca DeSousa
6.) Paige Michalchuk
7.) Fiona Coyne
Top 7 male characters:
1.) Zig Novak (I don't even care)
2.) Spinner Mason
3.) Sean Cameron
4.) Marco Del Rossi
5.) JT Yorke
6.) Jay Hogart
7.) Mike Dallas
Three dead characters to bring back:
It kind of has to be JT, Cam and Adam. I wouldn't bring back Craig's dad or Rick. Part of me wants to bring back Wheels's parents from the original series, though.

This week saw the release of yet another episode of "My Adventures with Superman", and I wanted to put out my thoughts on it. It would probably be better to wait for the full season before commenting on the show, but I think its fun to react to each episode as it comes out. Also helps that so far the show appears to have an episodic structure, which makes it more appropriate to judge each episode on its own. And I also have to mention that there's some obvious spoilers here.
Tumblr media
Here's my thoughts on episode 3 :
- The opening scene of the show is pure Superman. There's a disaster happening, there are people in danger, Superman rushes in to save the day, while Lois jumps in to try and get an interview out of him. It's great stuff. - I'd like to see more of how the in-universe public reacts to Superman. In the real world, we've gotten so many superhero movies and cartoons, that we've gotten used to superheroes just being an omnipresent thing and that seems to be bleeding into superhero adaptations where the existence of superheroes is taken for granted. But really, the existence of superheroes in fiction should be treated as a big deal in-universe, and I hope the cartoon shows that aspect more in future episodes. It's a good way to make the world and setting feel more realistic. - Clark Kent doing an semi-awkward "Hero" voice as Superman is a nice bit of characterization. It shows that the character is still finding himself and settling into his role as the new champion of Metropolis. - There's a nice bit where Lois asks Clark to do a Superman impression and Clark naturally switches to his "Superman voice", before realizing that he might end up giving his secret identity away, so he pivots to a "Clark Kent doing a Superman impression" voice. And to think that there are people out there who have suggested that the idea of superheroes having secret identities is outdated. Why would you get rid of that idea when you can have fun moments like this one ? - The trailer of the show indicated that the show uses three primary Comic Books for inspiration : Superman Birthright, All Star Superman and Man of Steel (1986). I am...not the biggest fan of Man of Steel, and I hope the influences of that comic are kept to a minimum. On the other hand, Birthright and All Star are solid stories. This episode seems to also take inspiration from Superman Smashes the Klan, particularly in how Superman's powers are manifested by him having visions and strange flashes where his senses are suddenly heightened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, if the show is taking inspiration from my favorite Superman story of all time, then that's definitely a good sign. - We're introduced to a few more supporting characters here in the form of Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and Ronnie Troupe. They're given a comedic introduction which didn't quite land for me, but the episode moves at a brisk pace, so it doesn't feel like an issue. - And we have Clark, Lois and Jimmy doing some good old fashioned detective work to track down the bad guys. I like how each member of the trio gets to contribute in figuring out the bad guys' plan. It makes it clear that while Superman may be the one with the powers, the other characters are heroes in their own right. - The show introduces three new villains. Rough House, Silver Banshee and Mist. They're given just enough characterization and quirks to not feel generic. So far the show seems to be leaning on the villains being more down to earth and small scale, which works well considering that the show does have a “Year One” feel to it.
- We already have fanboys complaining about how the villains don't look exactly like the comics or how their power sets are different from the comics. It's really funny because both Livewire and Silver Banshee are at best, C-list villains in the comics. They don't have more than five notable stories between the two of them not just in current comics, but just in general. I'm not saying that the characters don't or can't have fans, but lets not act like its blasphemous for an adaptation to change the characters to suit the story. - The action scene is fun enough, though it does kinda feel like a repeat of the pilot episodes. The villains wreck havoc, Superman shows up and gets beaten down by the villains, the villains lose control of their tech, which throws them off just in time for Superman to put them down. Let's hope that future episodes don't fall into that formula. - Like the pilot, there's a scene where Superman gets a vision of aliens and robots on other planets. I know that the show is teasing Brainiac as the possible big bad, and the visions are sure to lead into that. My theory is that Brainiac may be connected to all the high-tech weapons that the villains have been using in the past few episodes. Brainiac has always been a tech-based villain, so it makes sense for him to be involved in this way. As a Transformers fan, this reminds me of the Transformers Animated show. That show had a futuristic setting with all sorts of advanced robots being integrated into the society in some way. This technology was manufactured by the fictional Sumdac Industries, and its eventually revealed that the owner of that company was reverse engineering the technology from the salvaged remains of Megatron, the main villain of the Transformers franchise. This was in turn a plot point inspired by the Transformers movie. I think that "My Adventures with Superman" might do something similar with Brainiac. - We get a romantic flight sequence between Superman and Lois ! I never get tired of those, and the romance continues to be adorable. - When Lois interviews Superman, he tells her that he doesn't know too much about where he came from or who he is, and that's definitely a good thing. I feel like so many Superman adaptations just skip this aspect and have Superman immediately know that he's from Krypton, that his name was Kal-El and that his parents names were Jor-El and Lara, that the planet was destroyed, etc. Usually this is done by having a Jor-El hologram to give convenient plot dumps to Superman. However, you could make a compelling story out of Superman slowly uncovering his origins and heritage, and I'm glad that the show might be going in that direction. - There's still no appearance or even mention of Lex Luthor, Superman's one true archenemy. I'm fine with that. I think there's more than enough Superman vs Lex Luthor stories in both comics and other media. The show feels more fresh and unique by focusing on other villains. And that's episode three. This show continues to be solid and entertaining and while it has its flaws, they're not as egregious as to get in the way of my enjoyment of the final product.

(SPOILER ALERT)All Question and Answer on Anastasia's Telegram who i already translate in English (sorry if there a wrong word since use translate on website):
1. How did you decide on this ending?
It's a bit of an imprecise question. If you mean the path of light/darkness/balance, that ending was accepted in the original plan. In the middle of season 3, I wanted to include another bad path finale with a sad outcome, but...there are some points that prevented me from accomplishing what I wanted.
However, the ending of a *very* dramatic story should have pleased readers with at least a little positivity.
2. The path of balance. What does it provide?
I've talked about it before, but I'll say it now. The balance path is designed to give you enough stats for all the choices in the story. And at the end, you can decide the fate of your main character.
3. will there be a special edition?
No, there won't be a special edition. The story ended the way it was supposed to.
4. Did you write the ending to a specific music? If yes, what music?
I like to listen to songs from different movies/series. It helps put me in the right mood. The last thing I listened to was:
1)James Newton - I'm listening.
2)The Danish Girl - the mirror
3)Ludovico Einaudi - primavera (slowed down)
4)Michael Suby - Kayleigh's Funeral
5)Princess Yue - Avatar the Last Airbender OST.
If from the soundtracks, the last ones are:
1) Isak Danielson - Power.
2) Claire Gueresso - Rise
3)Tommee Profitt - I'll Be Your Hero
4)Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful
5. What genre will the new story be? Is there an outline already? Are we waiting for a new story? Will there be a new story in the modern world.
1) The genre is uncertain. Many people think I will write a psychological thriller, but that was just a wish, not a statement.
I could also say that I would like to try mysticism or horror, but that doesn't mean I would definitely come out with that genre.
2) I can't answer that question.
3) Counting on late fall, and then we'll see... Maybe sooner, maybe later.
4) Probability is about 80 percent, but I'm still thinking.
6. Which of the characters had children and a wedding after the finale?
It could be all of them. Some have it sooner, some will help. It all depends on the desire of your main character (you).
7. The fate of the locket? What became of it? How did it end up at the mother of the MC?
1,2) It was said that her father stole and gave the medallion to pay off a debt. MC didn't look for it because she had an idea of the people in question and didn't take the risk.
3) It was also said that it was passed down by inheritance.
8. What happens to Cassandra in the finale? Does she stay in New York or does she leave with Hodge and Leon?
Cassandra stayed in New York to get back on her own feet and start her own business/agency. If she returned to Hodge, the distance finally killed any hope of their reunion. Cassandra herself rejected that kind of relationship.
9. In how many years can Katherine/Hodge or Katherine/Leon meet again and finally stay together?
Three to four years. After surviving the distance, Hodge/Leon will decide to propose to GH.
10. Maybe you can console us and tell us that Hodge has solved his problems early and will get back together with Katherine in a year?
That would be unfair and wrong. I can see them finally being able to work through their problems after three years (minimum).
11. Michelle and Brandon didn’t survive the long-distance relationship. Do you think Hodge and Catherine can handle it?
Michelle and Brandon had a completely different situation. Brandon prioritized work, which he regretted in the future.
For Hodge and Catherine, it was a necessity.
12. could Katherine even fly to Hodge/Leon for the whole summer?
For the whole summer, no, but for a month and a half...maybe.
13. Did MC/Hodge or MC/Leon stay happy with this ending?
Every time they met...were unspeakably happy to spend time with each other.
14. Who broke up after the events in the story?
It’s kind of sad...I think it should be up to you. After all, you play the main character 
Of the favorites, no one planned the breakup.
15. Why did you want to write the finale this way, without marriage proposals?
Our protagonist is a young girl who has been through a lot of events and problems for her age. Yes, she has found love, but... it’s too early for her to think about marriage. She needs to live an ordinary life, and spend her time with her love line. All in good time 
16. When will the other character profiles come out?
One of them is on its way. The other two are waiting for their moment of stardom. They were written a long time ago, their publication does not depend on me.
17. If you don’t go with Dominic on the his route will he end up staying in Seattle with his parents? Or will he return to New York to help with the club?
If Club Hodge stays, Dominic will be combining two businesses.
If Hodge’s club is sold, Dominic will help his parents, but he won’t forget about himself either.
18. How did Dominic start working for Hodge?
Just like in normal life, when an employer selects the resumes of employees. The only thing... Dominic had to go through many tests before Hodge could trust the dark side of his business.
The most important test was for trust.
19. If MC went to university, does she want to be a coach in the future? Will she be able to work side by side with Tate?
1) Yes, the protagonist wants to fully immerse herself in learning so that she can be a professional coach with experience in the future.
2) And yes, she can.
20. How did it work out for them with the Olympics?
Depends on your skill level and then your level of credibility.
If you win gold at the Championships, you are more likely to get a medal at the Olympics. But which one... will remain a secret.
21. Will Tate’s father be healthy? What is he sick with?
Tate’s father has a heart problem. He survived a heart attack.
Mr. Tae-Ming tries to undergo treatment, but what the final outcome will be will remain off the screen.
22. On the Tate’s route, will Katherine be able to communicate with his mother normally?
Maybe, but very, very soon. Tate’s mother works around the clock, and in her spare time she travels with her husband to hospitals. It will take some time to get used to her son’s girlfriend.
23. Could there have been something between Cassandra and Dominic?
A friendship of sorts is possible, a relationship is not. Dominic couldn’t handle Cassandra’s character. He needs ease, adventurism, and freedom.
24. Will Dominic and Brian become good friends?
If the Hodge Club survives and Brian becomes the head of it, more than likely, yes.
25. Will Catherine continue her communication with Cassandra?
If you have a good relationship with Cassandra, friendship is possible. But they will not communicate as often as they would like.
26. Is Leon’s mother alive?
Yes, she lives in Europe.
27. Why is it Leon who gives peonies?
Why not? He’s the only one who decided to give MC real flowers. And roses are... too corny for him.
28. Where is Leon from?
Leon is originally from Ireland, but he and his family have often traveled to Europe.
29. What major did Liz enroll in?
Simply put, a physical education and sports teacher.
30. Do you have a favorite?
They are all favorites for me because I put a piece of myself into each one.
31. How difficult was it to write the finale? Was it difficult to say goodbye to the characters?
1) It was hard to write eleven different dates 
Otherwise, it was quite comfortable. You have experience 
2) Psychologically speaking, I didn’t realize at first that I was writing an ending...
And when I started looking at the finished backdrops, characters and cutscenes for this update... it got sad. I couldn’t believe that we had made it to the finish line.
32. If you had the chance, would you want to write stories on behalf of a guy?
I wouldn’t dare do such an experiment.
33. Did Sirius still stay in the “pet hotel”?
No, Hodge took him away.
34. “Follow the call of your heart and determine your own destiny”-is this quote your personal instruction to readers?
More like a wish.
35. Why was the farewell as if to the entire company, since only Hodge and Leon were leaving. I hope they all stayed in touch?
Yes, it was a farewell to Hodge and Leon, but it could also be called communal because the main character is going her own way. She won’t be able to keep in touch with her newfound friends as much because she has to build her life.
They will see each other, but not as much as they would like.
36. Why did you decide to make the compromise fall into the hands of the FBI and Leon and Hodge will have to go away for a few years and leave Mr. (long distance relationship).
This is a consequence of their darker side of life. You can’t get away with something like that, you have to pay for everything. And this became their path to redemption. They were very lucky to get away with it.
And long-distance relationships, they will endure. Especially when they see each other once a month for one week.
37. When the chairman of the corporation was caught, he said it wasn’t over. What does that mean?
The chairman wanted to frighten Hodge into living his life of speculation and tormenting himself from day to day. But Baker found another way 
38. What kind of business did Hodge and Leon have in Brazil?
If Hodge sold the club, they decide to open a chain of restaurants.
If Leon sold the car dealerships, they decide to open collectible watch stores.
And whether they will do anything illegal...life will tell.
39. Will there be crossovers in your future story?
It will all depend on the setting and the genre of the story.
40. Have you ever had a situation where during the course of writing a story you’ve gotten into and perceived the main character’s problems as your own?
Some of the problems I experienced and some I could feel and empathize with.
41. How long did it take you to write the ending?
I can’t say exactly, but I think two to three weeks.
42. Did you plan to write a book based on the OTI and SBTR novellas?
It took a while for me to realize that I was more drawn to screenwriting.
I see myself as a screenwriter, but not as a writer.
It’s a tremendous job that’s admirable. But, alas, I still have to stomp and stomp to it 
43. Are OTI and SBTR in the same universe?
No, they are in different universes.
44. Why does OTI bring up issues of self-acceptance, themes of violence, both moral and physical? Have you/your acquaintances had such experiences or did you want to highlight these issues?
You know, a little bit of everything. The primary objective was to highlight these issues in history.
And I could take examples from my own experiences, loved ones, or sources.
45. What is it like to describe intimate scenes? Do you have to imagine everything, visualize everything?
It’s been very difficult lately. Maybe because of fatigue, or maybe there were other reasons.
But intimate scenes also need inspiration.
For example the scene with Dominique in the car, I began to write it when the idea, the desire and the inspiration kicked in. It’s the kind of explosion that happens once every indefinite amount of time. I caught the moment 
46. How did Hodge and Brian get their father’s guns? Can we have a backstory about that?
Do we all remember what the brothers’ father was involved with? Hodge got his father’s gun, after he came of age, because he was very serious about that kind of thing.
Brian got a gun, after his father died. The kid was a hot-tempered character, and his father couldn’t trust him with a gun before his due date.
47. How hard is it to walk away from the ending of a story and start writing a new one?
I wouldn’t say it’s very difficult. When you think about new ideas, it’s very easy.
When you try to write them out, you involuntarily go back to the characters from the last story.
But I quickly come away from that and start something new with renewed vigor.
48. Who would you date if you were the main character?
I’ve already answered that question. I understand that with my character you need someone like Leon. But I’d date Tate 
49. Do you play in the CD? If so, what stories do you play?
I do. I try to play them all as much as I can.
50. Is it hard to write out the character profiles?
I just don’t have enough time for that. That’s why I was writing profiles when I was on vacation.
51. How would you rate the ending of the story? Was everything satisfactory to you?
When it was written and turned in, I thought I had survived everything possible...
But after resting, reading each piece again...I realize that many moments lacked a more precise ending.
The same ending with Leon and Hodge. Many people thought the ending was open ended and it was unknown what was in store for them. It wasn't.
I wanted to show that they were going to go through an ordeal that would not only be a finale, but also a success.
I see the displeasure of many who didn't like Hodge's answer, "We'll see," but it wasn't said to piss them off :)
It was said to the main character so as not to scare her off by getting married. After all, she's still young, and she doesn't want to rush into it.
These kinds of moments I would like to describe in more detail, so that the players do not have questions.
Well... and I wish there had been a sad ending, but alas.
52. Were there any moments that you wanted to add, but they wouldn't fit into the screen time of the series?
Such moments are present, but they don't affect the outcome of the story. It's more like a nice addition.
53. Why on the branch with the minions did they give the ring as a gift and not a proposal? Do you think that the heroine has been through a lot lately and now she does not need it? Or are the characters little explored for each other and it is too early for such a responsible step?
You answered your own question :)
54. Will there be a Sirius questionnaire?
No, there will not be a Sirius profile.
Sam's questionnaire was a nice bonus + he influenced the plot of the story in season one.
55. What is Cassandra's orientation?
She is bisexual.
56. Are there any prototypes of the characters? Or are they all collective characters?
Collective images :)
57. Who called Catherine and said nothing but breathed heavily into the phone?
It was Hodge.
58. In one of your interviews you were asked how Hodge was able to help Katherine deal with a panic attack. You said that he had already had the experience. Could you tell us more about where this experience came from, please.
After his father died, he was dealing with a panic attack himself. Fortunately, he had people around him who helped him come to his senses.
59. Whose idea was the crossover with the novel Fury of the Titans?
Join idea.
60. You left an open ending with each favorite. How do you personally see Katherine's relationship in a few years with each of them?
1) Brian - they love to travel, Brian often draws the main character, and was even able to sell a few masterpieces with Katherine's permission.
2) Liz - they like to spend time at home. They often go skating, and try to help each other with their studies. Also, they help Harry open his own restaurant.
3) Tate - they spend a lot of time together. Both at the rink and at home. They plan to buy their own apartment. They like to drive around the city at night, and often have a date somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
4) Dominic - They each work hard, but they manage to miss each other.
Dominic arranges all sorts of outings for her, and she agrees to his adventures. They support each other in their endeavors.
5) Hodge - Despite the distance, they see each other every month and spend a happy week together. They tell each other about their plans and arrange surprises. At a distance, they often connect by video call.
6) Leon - works very hard, but calls the main character every night to check on her well-being. Every month they see each other in a new country, which he leads tours of. And the nights are spent in each other's arms.
61. What kind of car does Hodge have after all?
Hodge is a 2019 Cadillac CT4.
Brian - 1966 Cadillac deville.
Dominic - BMW X5 Premium SUV
Tate - Chevrolet Aveo 2015
62. Tell us a little about the fate of Tom and his partner?
Along the way, when Tom wasn't competing...he took a break and got depressed.
Along the way, when Tom participated...does well, but changes partners. Unstable.
63. What sources served as inspiration for writing the short story?
Series, movies, and other kinds of sources.
Some problems were inspired by the series "The Queen's Walk."
64. What is the age difference between Andrew and Helena?
Andrew is about 60 years old.
Elena is about 45-50 years old.
65. How was the idea for the OTI plot born?
As I said earlier, my boy Vlad and I were going through a lot of ideas, one of which was a story about a protagonist with a difficult fate.
After outlining the seasons, I provided an outline that the director liked and started writing.

Disappointment Dissertation
With the launch of Overwatch2, I know everyone on the internet is jumping on the hate bandwagon. But I still wanted to get my thoughts into a cohesive argument. The short version is: I am so disappointed.
I have several chapters in mind, but the most shocking and yet not shocking one I wanted to do first as it literally affects every single player of the game.
Chapter 1
Part 1
The reason why they made these changes is very clear: Money. They can now force a majority of people to literally spend the same money on a yearly basis for a game that before, we only had to buy once. Even if you only buy the bare minimum of the new currency just for the battle pass and nothing else, you end up buying the the game for an even higher price on a yearly basis.
The Battle Pass Math
The game now requires a new “battle pass currency” that you must spend your real life money on to unlock everything from Overwatch2. The Legacy Coins from Overwatch can only be used to buy some items that existed pre-October release. Let’s break down the pricing.
(Battle Pass Currency shorthand will be a ‘c’ following a number)
500c = 5.00 (this is the least amount of currency you can buy)
1000c = 10.00
The premium battle pass cost is 1000c, or 10 real life (American) dollars. There will be a new battle pass roughly every 6-9 weeks. Let's take the fastest turnaround time per-pass to see the high end of what the true cost of Overwatch2 is.
~52 weeks in a calendar year
52/6 = 8.667, roughly 8 battle passes a year
8*10= 80
To unlock all the new content a year you will have to spend 80 dollars a year. Overwatch itself was 60 dollars flat and you never had to re-buy it. Discounting the “Watchpoint Pack” where you did rebuy the game but with 2 $20 skins included.
There is an option to buy 2000c and you get a “10% extra” where you get an extra “free” 200c for 20 dollars. To not overspend and only buy the 8000c required:
3 2200c packs: 20*3= 60$
1 1000c pack: 10$
1  500c pack: 5$ (and 100c left over that you had to buy even though you did not want it)
Total: 75$
Grand total savings: 5$
There is also the 50$ currency bundle for 5700c with a 14% “extra.”
1 5700c pack: 50$
1 2200c pack: 20$
1 500c pack: 5$ (with 400 left over that you had to buy even through you didn’t want it)
Total: 75$
Grand total savings: 5$
The extra bundles are the same “savings,” but with 100c or 400c extra that you were forced to pay for.
So the free to play game is 75-80 dollars a year to have access to the new content.
Part 2
The New Hero Math
BUT WAIT. The battle pass does not include all new content.
Yes indeed you read that right, even after spending 80 real life dollars, you only receive access to unlock the new cosmetics and in-game content on the battle pass. And yes, you read that right again, you do not give them money and get the content, you must grind and “unlock” the content you already paid for. It’s unclear to me if you do not unlock all levels by the end of the season, if you just get those items, or if that content (and your money) is dust in the wind and you get nothing that you failed to unlock.
“Regular” new character skins, highlights, emotes are all completely separate from the battle pass and cost money. You like that new Junker Queen skin? It’s extra. Want that Sojourn highlight intro? It’s extra.
(I am excluding “souvenirs” and “weapon charms” as these might be 1 time unlocks that you can use for all heroes after being paid for once and also I have no clue what the hell a “souvenir” is or why anyone would want to spend money on it and I’m sure as hell not spending money on them to find out)
All three new heroes appear to have the exact same spread of cosmetics with minor variations. Any cosmetics that appear on either the free or premium battle pass I have excluded from these price totals. I’m unsure if these are battle pass locked, meaning if you don't get them on the pass you will never be able to unlock them. Or, if at a later date, they will become “unlocked” and buyable like their rest. Which will increase the base price to fully unlock a new hero, only time will tell at this early point in the game’s launch.
Cosmetic Discrepancies:
Sojourn has 1 epic skin and 10 sprays (one less of each than both her counterparts)
One of Kiriko’s legendary skins is currently free for watching Twitch streams but will be paywalled in battle pass season 2
2 of her recolor skins are listed as locked and not purchasable and do not appear on the battle pass track. Possible glitch? Maybe part of a “bundle” in the shop that I don’t see and/or is rotating?
2 Legendary skins (1900*2= 3800)
2 Epic skins (1000*2= 2000)
4 Recolors (300*4= 1200)
Total Currency For Skins: 7000c
4 Emotes (500*4= 2000)
3 Victory poses (300*3= 900)
10 Voice lines (100*10= 1000)
11 Sprays (100*11= 1100)
2 Highlight intros (700*2= 1400)
Total Currency For “Other” Cosmetics: 6400
Grand Total To Fully Unlock ONE New Character: 13,400c  (135$ real American dollars)
Part 3
The Grand Total and the Future
If you are looking to unlock only the new Overwatch2 characters and the battle pass season 1 your total is:
(3 x 135) + 80 = $485
FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FIVE DOLLARS JUST TO UNLOCK THE NEW CONTENT.
I shudder to think what the cost to unlock the entire cast of heroes is since they have 6 years of cosmetics banked. No. I’m not going to go through each hero to run their prices and get a grand total, I want to keep what’s left of my soul.
And this also does not include any possible “seasonal” event content. The first being the “Wrath Of The Bride” Halloween event. There appears to be 3 new (no doubt legendary, another staggering $50 just for those three skins if you buy that currency bundle) skins for Junker Queen, Kiriko, and Sojourn. Ashe was included in the promo art in her Warlock skin which is not new, unless they have changed something and will charge us again for a recolor of it.
As these Halloween skins do not appear on the current battle pass track, I believe it’s safe to assume any and all “event” content will never be free or part of a battle pass “bundle.” This could change in the future, but I don’t see a financial reason for them to do so.
Absolutely gobsmacking. The cost just for launch day cosmetics makes me numb.
I honestly can’t see how this could be sustainable at these price points. $20 dollars for one hero’s single legendary skin. $7.50 for a three second highlight intro. It’s insane! And what makes it worse, is there is no “grind and hope” option.
In Overwatch, you were rewarded for grinding out levels with lootboxes. If you didn’t want to pay for new cosmetics, you could grind and hope you got what you wanted in loot boxes. Or, save your acquired coins and buy them that way.
My suggestion would be to bring back lootboxes in a limited capacity. Because the company is in the middle of a money hungry cash grab, yes, you should be able to buy them. But, after say 2-3 battle pass levels, you got a “free one.” It would reward the free track players to keep grinding (since 75% of the battle pass items are paywalled) as well as paid track player with extra content and currency to unlock non battle pass items. Obviously, paid battle pass items could not appear in loot boxes (until a later date if those items became unlocked) so it would not interfere with the push for people to pay for the battle pass.
And it would be critical for brand new Overwatch2 players to be able to have anything other than the base skin.
In conclusion, I’m disappointed about how naked the cash grab is. And I’m angry that they are not even doing the naked cash grab well.
If Blizzard had any sense at all, they would have kept the loot boxes, temping people to try their luck, and been a smidgen more kind to their players. They would have stuffed the battle pass full of things the player actually want. They would have done skins, highlights, poses, charms and not voicelines, player icons, and “player cards” that are worthless fluff that could have gone into loot boxes to force us to buy both currency and loot boxes.

Personal: Well Fuck!  Disability Edition
Wednesday, I was so exhausted in was lungs and straight tro bed after, once I got the Millennial home.  Thursday, I realized iI had four errands, one of them being take an ILL back I'd been futzing around with after finishing that was now due.  I do NOT want to piss of ILL department.  It had been beautiful and sunny, but had gone a little dim while I was finishing up with it.  Somehow between me standing up to start gathering gear and suiting up to go then leaving, it went from cats watching birds in open windows with mild evening overcast to pissing down so hard I got soaked in the short hobble from overhang to car.  Very PNW, really, but it is usually not quite this abrupt at this time of year.  I hadn't grabbed a coat because it had been warm literally minutes ago.
The book got back.  I got my meds from poverty pharmacy.  I burned the rest of both OTCs before they flipped over, which required two stores, since the OTC chain pharmacy does not sell tomatoes or the kind of cheese i wanted in my dinner.  It was fine. I did the stuff I didn't do and got the TUMBLR programming up to date.  I went to bed at a decent time.
3-4 hours later forage delivery woke me, and it was the sub, so instead of doing the easiest thing for everyone, which is drop them off on the patio (No contact.  No doors for them instead of two, plus no waiting around, samish distance.  I can pull the boxes in and sort them sitting down, but they'd have to know to check delivery instructions.  The people who normally do the route know where to park, etc.), so I can have time to dress and get my legs working properly, they were locked out of the front door and needing letting in, likely straining to hold the boxes, while I dressed and tried to make it out to let them in.  My legs weren't working, and I kept having to flop on the bed and grab furniture and door jams.  The pain was excruciating.  I was shaking from effort and pain by the time I hobbled out on my crutch to get them.
so know I'm standing in yet more pain, and bending over which is a thing difficult and painful and apt to fuck with my breathing in the kitchen instead of sitting down to pull out perishables.  They might as well have just handed me my breakfast cookie and the meat tube, nuts, and bag of cheese for Squirrel and saved the hauling.
Everything in my box except the breakfast cookie and apples needs a minimum of an hour prep plus a lot of extra ingredients to turn into food, not counting peanut butter which I can't eat.  The protein is tofu which is about an hour of prep for marinade one day and 1-2 hours on the second day plus a ton of extra ingredients and the foreknowledge to know which if any two days in a row I can handle that much standing.  I used to be a whiz at tofu.  These days I just give it away and buy pre-seasoned because I physically can't manage it anymore.  Nothing except the cookie, apples, and the dried government figs (I can't digest figs either.  I love them, but can't eat them) could be eaten alone.
Squirrel's box wasn't much better, but at least he got three edible things that could be made quickly, though with extra ingredients.
They know these boxes are going to elderly and disabled people.  This set was only slightly above the level of the time when they sent us 45 radishes for Thanksgiving because surely that's what we needed instead of... almost anything else.
I know, I know, they haven't much money and everybody got their EBT cut dramatically while food prices are sky rocketing.  I just keep thinking about how in the second year of the pandemic they kept sending these exhausting, illogical boxes while giving the able bodied people healthy frozen homemade soup they made in the kitchen there that you could just thaw out and eat....  None for the elderly and disabled of course.
They are changing the policy so it's forage or forage delivery, not you can come in and look if you are well enough to go, but you have usually something from the box if you can't.  There has been hardly anything at in person forage since the pandemic started, but you can usually get milk and about half the time there is bread.  Once in a while one lucks out, like we did Wednesday and I got six cans of coconut water and some lettuce.  forage box often has useful things like impossible meat or Indian ready meals and random useful things.  It's more reliable, but it too is a roulette wheel.  I need to stay on delivery even if I were up to once a week as that's where Squirrel gets his meat and nuts and things, and the boxes are still a better gamble than the in person.  Sigh.
so I made phone calls I needed to make before trying to go back to bed.  I fell through the cracks on a medical thing and will have to start from scratch with the new Doctor in April.  I tried to get through to the rheum's billing department to find out why they are billing me instead of medicare.  No live humans, so I left a message.  No answer, so I have to start again Monday and hope it can get solved fast because they want this money first week of April.
I was so angry about all of it that I couldn't get back to sleep for four hours.
Then a guy with children screaming in the background woke me up to try to get me to move out of my apartment.  I gave him the do not call list schpeel.  This shit is starting all over again.  Fuck!  At the height of it pre-pandemic, I'd get multiple mailers and calls trying to get me to move a week.  I am very much hoping to leave here feet first.  I wish there was some way to convey that which would end the harassment.  They upped my block numbers to 25 from 20.  Finally, but I need most of that for the police and fire scammers, plus the time shares and identity theft regulars.  Oh and that asshole from the fake cancer charity who likes to call on weekends or as early as 7AM.  The fake police charity down in Seattle got two more auto-dialers this year.  I do not have enough block slots for every realtor in town.
The call seven thirtyish in the evening from a friend was totally reasonable, but I was in crap shape and ended up going back to sleep after.  I ended yup watching an espionage show until the are you all right message from Netflix came up.  I did manage to eat and lung and take care of cats before the body spasms started and that ate most of the rest of the night.  Fun!  It's 7:41AM on Saturday and I achieved next to nothing.

TOP SHIPS OF ALL TIME:
this is in no order but it will be numbered for my sanity.
1. slexie - mark and lexie/greys anatomy
• i am so attached to this ship, i have never sobbed so hard an my life than when i first watched the season 8 finale/season 9 premiere of greys anatomy. i still rewatch only their seasons quite often.
2. catradora - catra and adora/SPOP
• ultimate comfort ship, i rewatch she ra whenever i am going through it. i first watched it when i was 15 and i still watch it for comfort. 15 is a nostalgic age for me, she ra reminds me of what it was like before anxiety. 😩
3. korrasami - korra and asami/LOK
• another comfort ship, comfort show, etc. lok and avatar are more shows i watched when i was 15, when the pandemic hit i was almost 16. i was locked up in my room, no school, no going out, no friends. i had a basement room with a couch and a huge tv, i spent MANY weeks watching netflix on that couch and the feeling was immaculate. i rewatch the atlau shows VERY often.
4. bellarke - bellamy and clarke/the 100
• once again another comfort show, i rewatch the 100 annually and have been watching it since season 4 came out. my dad started watching it, then my mom, then my sister. it became a show we watched all together, and i had a little ritual when it came to new seasons. i am an impatient person in some ways more than others, i do not have the patience to maintain interest when watching episodes weekly but i have no issue waiting for the whole season to be out. so every year as the episodes came out, i ignored them. when they all hit netflix, i would binge. however, for season 7 of the 100 i waited 2 years. i think i was procrastinating letting it end. bellarke was THE slowburn. i was so sure they would end up together, in a way im glad they didn't, but i loved them so much. i cannot describe the way that i feel when watching them and this show.
5. clexa - clarke and lexa/the 100
• GAY SLOWBURN. y'all i have so many fics i read consistently about clexa. i have like 3 on shuffle that i've read 10 times minimum. i cry like a bitch every time i rewatch s2-3 of the 100.
6. avatrice - ava and beatrice/warrior nun
• so i had heard a lot and seen a lot about this show before i actually watched it, which was actually in january of this year, several months after the 2nd (and final 🥲) season came out. i QUICKLY fell in love w both avatrice and ava/beatrice as individuals. i also read a lot of avatrice fics and cry thinking abt it being cancelled 😭
7. stydia - stiles and lydia/teen wolf
• BEST SLOWBURN OF ALL TIMEEE. it's weird to think teen wolf ended SIX years ago, this is another show i rewatch annually and what's funny is when i was 12 watching this show i did not care for stydia. i liked scott's relationships with allison and kira, never paid much attention to stiles and lydia until i was 16/17 and i rewatched and realized that they are AMAZING.
8. sameena - sam and deena/fear street
• MORE ANNUAL REWATCH SERIES. i LOVE LOVE LOVE these movies, and when i say sam and deena i am also including sarah and hannah. ex's/enemies to lovers in HORROR? forbidden love? sapphics? say less.
9. glaggie - glenn and maggie/twd
• so this was my first ship ever. started watching this when i was 11, i watched it over and over and over, i read the first 3 compendiums of the comics, then season 7 rolled around, i watched three first episode live then never watched another episode last season 6 again.
10. delena - damon and elena/tvd
• honestly they sort of give me the ick now but 12 year old me ATE that shit up, would also like to add they were my sexual awakening. i remember watching one of their spicy scenes and feeling a little funny 🥴
11. wayhaught - waverly and nicole/wynonna earp
• hottest ship ever. i fucking love them and i still need to watch the most reason season which is not that recent.
12. (honorable mention) camren - camila and lauren/5h
• camren gets only an honorable mention bc i don't ship them anymore, but they were MY gay awakening. when i was 13 i discovered fifth harmony and, naturally, i discovered ✨camren fanfiction✨ i literally did not know i was gay until i started reading fics about them. it just clicked when i felt more reading than i ever had for real life boys. :) anyways i don't support shipping real people anymore at my ripe age of 18.

New Viz Manga Announcements
Tumblr media
So, I won't be taking much of a look at some of the questionable and lazy licenses in much detail, but I will give an overview of them. I'll be going into detail on the good ones though, and that includes the Shojo Beat licenses.
So let's start with lazy. Why was Viz so lazy with these announcements compared to last year's? Well, the answer is that Viz believes themselves to be overextended in the NA market currently, which is somewhat of an understatement. They've put themselves in a deadlock by refusing to raise volume price and having tight margins. They can't expand printing operations because they don't have enough, so they don't license much in turn causing an overall slow down. It's a dumb position to be put in, and one that has a lot of solutions. Regardless, I'm here to talk licenses, so let's get that going.
Jojo's: Stone Ocean and Another Junji Ito Collection
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are no surprise, Viz has a hard on for Junji Ito and his style of horror, and Jojo's is a staple of similar caliber. The only complaint is how slow Viz is to release Jojo's, considering we'll only be starting part 6 in NA when Part 9 will be ongoing in Japan, effectively putting us three entire parts behind (which is an insane 68 Volumes based on the Japanese release). And Junji Ito, well, it's Junji Ito. It's cool, I guess. It's just boring to have 20 volumes of horror manga from the same creator and nothing else.
Naruto and MHA Coloring Books
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't really think there's any explaining for these. Announcing they licensed these was borderline pointless, and just feels like Viz is padding out their catalogue with easy items.
FMA and Demon Slayer Side Stories
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are certainly not serious offenders in the grand scheme of things, but just sort of boring announcements? They're guarantees, so to speak. It was inevitable like Viz getting JJK and CSM, there's nothing really incredible to hearing about them, you're just sat there thinking, "Oh, that's pretty nice I guess".
Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Spy x Family Fan & Guide Material
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truthfully, Spy x Family's is the least bad on this list. The Demon Slayer fan book was February 2021 in Japan, and JJK's was October 2021 (Spy x Family was May 2022). That means that there's a wait of at minimum a year and getting close to even 3 years of wait time. For fan books. For anime. Demon Slayer is entering its third arc, and JJK Season 2 will have aired before we get the fan book for the anime's first season. It's just... depressing. Spy x Family's is the best, and even then it's cutting close to releasing before its second season and movie. I get that beggars can't be choosers, but the bar can only be placed so low.
Tatsuya Endo and Spy x Family Content
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tatsuya Endo is the newest cash cow for Viz, clearly. They now have every non-one shot/single volume series licensed by adding Blade of The Moon Princess (left). It's not that I'd say no, but what room are these licenses taking up? What other series that would be better or more interesting than some of Endo's older work? And the Spy x Family novel was a given, waste of space in this announcement and should have been announced along CSM Buddy Stories.
Chainsaw Man Box Set
Tumblr media
One of the biggest manga titles in recent years, Chainsaw Man finally get its Part 1 box set... with no announcements for Part 2 in sight, of course (this is the actual image they shared). And what do you get for purchasing this 11 volume box set? Why a poster, of course! It's 11 volumes, Viz. Incredibly far removed, really halved, from the normal volume count of a box set. Which, you know, you buy to save money on a series and collect it faster when there's more than 20 volumes. This is pointless. No nicer covers, no bigger trim size, no real bonuses. A waste of money aside from people that want the box.
Shojo Saviors
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unironically, Shojo Beat came out with the best stuff overall from the Viz announcements. A trio of series, two ongoing and one completed. The first two images are series already by authors that have other works in English as well. Sakura, Saku! by the author of Ao Haru Ride (is ongoing), and Neighborhood Story by the famous Ai Yazawa. The third, Tamon's B Side, is the new author Yuki Shiwasu. As a trio, it's very promising, and has nice range overall. The first two are very easy to recommend to anyone, especially those that have read any prior series from either author, while the third is more of a wild card.
The Good Ones: Takopi's Original Sin & #DRCL Midnight Children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And at the end of our list, we find the two new (and good) licenses from Viz out of this entire announcement. Takopi's Original Sin is sort of like an Inio Asano style affair from new author Taizan 5 (who currently has The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins in serialization), and #DRCL Midnight Children is a retelling of a version of Dracula's story by author Shinichi Sakamoto, who also has Innocent releasing under Dark Horse this year. Both are very solid series, as I've taken a peek at each online (even before they were announced), so they will fit very comfortably within Viz's lineup.
Final Thoughts - A Letdown
Really, that's all I need to say. It was a letdown. You look at the prior license announcements for other publishers and they're all far better than this, and Viz is the biggest publisher by a large margin. This is what they manage, a bit of housekeeping and effectively two new series, Takopi's being complete at 2 volumes and #DRCL in print at currently two volumes. It's not a stretch to say that Shojo Beat had the better announcements. Which is depressing because Shojo Beat has been getting outdone by Yen Press as of late, and Seven Seas is constantly steamrolling them. So where does that put Viz? In a hole. Their current catalogue is massive and popular, but the effectively added nothing to the list with this announcement, so we'll have to see what they end up doing with the next ones.

Note
Hey, I know this is kind of out the blue but I like your blog a lot (especially when you talk about food), and I was wondering if you knew any good recipes for making things like pot pies from scratch or knew where to find any. Wanted to try something new this year for my family, can you help?
Long post ahead! Because I'm not going to give you a recipe, I'm going to tell you how to build your own recipe.
I am a big proponent of the methodological approach to cooking. That is, I believe in teaching people methods of cooking, and how flavors go together, and then once you have those two things, you can invent recipes easily.
So I'm assuming you want a chicken pot pie, or maybe turkey to use up leftovers. Awesome! The basic parts of a bird pot pie are: bird meat, cooked; vegetables; white gravy; seasonings; crust. That's a nice short list.
So how much you're going to make depends on how many you're trying to feed. Rule for this is, .25lbs of meat per person per meal. I'm going to write this up as 4 people for 1 meal (no leftovers).
Make your crust before you start any of this, but I'm discussing crust options at the end.
Preheat your oven to 400F.
You will want, for 4 people, 1lb of bird meat. Use leftover turkey, or one of those rotisserie chickens from the market and shred that, or cube some chicken breasts and then salt and sautee them until they're not pink, or take some loose ground chicken or turkey sausage and brown it.
Next, veg. You want some combination of:
1 large yellow onion, chopped
2 large carrots, chopped
2 stalks of celery, chopped
8oz crimini mushrooms, quartered
2 cups shelled green peas (I use frozen, but thaw ahead)
1 cup chopped spinach (unusual, but nice)
Pick 4-5, but unless there's an allergy, use the onion.
Gravy time! You want chicken stock or broth and whole milk in a 3:1 ratio, for 4 servings call it 1.5c broth and .5c milk. Put that in a small saucepan with 1t kosher salt and start it warming over medium heat. Do NOT let it boil.
Then you want equal parts by volume butter and flour. For 4 servings, 3T of each. This is to make a roux. If you've never made roux, DON'T PANIC, this is not hard, it's just French.
First, take 1 tablespoon of butter and melt it over medium heat in a large frying pan. When it's melted, add the onion, and, if you're using it, the celery. Do not turn up the heat. Sweat the onion until it's translucent. Throw in the rest of the veg and cook through. Add the rest of the butter and melt it completely. Then add the flour and whisk to combine. You want the flour and butter to make a paste, which will coat the veg. Cook for another five or seven minutes, until the roux starts to turn a little golden.
Take hot milk-and-broth stuff and pour it in slooooowly, whisking the whole time, getting out all the lumps if you can. Pour with your writing hand, it's stronger to hold the heavy pot, and gives you better control over the pour. Whisk with your off hand. Trust me.
Simmer the whole thing until the gravy gets thick. Dump everyting into a 9x13" baking dish OR a 10-12" cast iron skillet OR several individual ramekins, and mix 'em up real good. Taste it, see if it needs salt.
Wait, seasonings? What seasonings? What do you mean we haven't covered that yet? Blast.
OK, fine.
Some options for bird-seasoning include:
thyme, tarragon (.5t each, dried), and 2 cloves garlic, minced
sage (dried, .75t)
lemon zest (zest of 1 lemon) and tarragon (.5t)
garlic and rosemary (3 cloves, .5t)
curry powder (should be mixed with the flour for the roux), (at least 1t)
If sausage, more of whatever's in the sausage
Anything else you like in your chicken
Black pepper works with any of the above, except the curry powder.
If you want to give it a little kick and a little sweetness, add like .5t of Sri Racha hot sauce. Goes with any of the above.
Totally go crazy with lots more garlic, too, these are minimums not absolutes.
Right. Now we talk about crust.
There are basically three routes you can go: classic pie crust, for which there is a recipe below; homemade or frozen puff pastry, and I say go for frozen; and biscuit dough, about which I am super lazy, but I'll include an actual recipe for that, too. Not providing a puff pastry recipe, though.
What I *actually* do for biscuit dough is either buy pre-made biscuit dough and use that, or take Bisquick, mix in some of the same seasonings that're in the pie, some shredded cheese, add just enough milk to make it stick, roll it out and cut it in squares, or else just do drop biscuits. Fuck it. But you want to have squares or rounds of dough and put them on top of the filling, not touching. If you're doing ramekins, just cut it large enough to cover the top.
Alton Brown's Grandmother's biscuits
2 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
2 tablespoons unflavored shortening, chilled
1 cup buttermilk, chilled
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Using your fingertips, rub butter and shortening into dry ingredients until mixture looks like crumbs. (The faster the better, you don't want the fats to melt.) Make a well in the center and pour in the chilled buttermilk. Stir just until the dough comes together. The dough will be very sticky.
Turn dough onto floured surface, dust top with flour and gently fold dough over on itself 5 or 6 times. Press into a 1-inch thick round. Cut out biscuits with a 2-inch cutter, being sure to push straight down through the dough. Place biscuits on baking sheet so that they just touch. Reform scrap dough, working it as little as possible and continue cutting. (Biscuits from the second pass will not be quite as light as those from the first, but hey, that's life.)
--
The following is a double-crust recipe, but you're using a big baking dish, so do the whole thing and trim it. Or use ramekins and you'll probably have more left over. Cover the whole dish(es), drape it over just a little. and trim. Ignore all the stuff about blind baking, it's irrelevant. Cut slits, possibly in a pretty pattern, into the crust, to make steam vents.
Karen Barker's Basic Pie Crust
Basic Pie Crust
Makes enough pastry for 2 single-crusted pies or 1 double-crusted pie.
I like to use a combination of butter and vegetable shortening in my crust. The butter contributes wonderful flavor, and the vegetable shortening gives the crust just the right amount of flakiness. I also thoroughly endorse the substitution of lard for the vegetable shortening. This recipe gives you a generous amount of pastry to allow for easy rolling.
About This Recipe
Yield: Makes enough pastry for 2 single-crusted pies or 1 double-crusted pie.
Ingredients
2 2/3 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 tablespoon sugar
4 ounces (8 tablespoons) chilled butter, cut into pieces
4 ounces (1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons) chilled vegetable shortening, cut into pieces
Approximately 1/3 to 1/2 cup water, as needed
Procedures
1. Place the flour, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a food processor with a steel blade. Pulse to combine.
2. Add the chilled butter and shortening; pulse until the fat is evenly cut in and the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Remove to a mixing bowl.
3. Working quickly, add enough cold water, while tossing and stirring with a fork, until the dough just begins to come together. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions, flatten into rounds, wrap in plastic, and chill for several hours or overnight.
4. Baker's Note: I always use regular Crisco shortening and Land O Lakes unsalted butter for my pie crusts. You can also substitute chilled lard for the vegetable shortening--this produces a distinctive, flavorful, and ultra flaky crust.
5. A Note on Blind Baking: When making single-crusted pies and tarts, I always partially bake my crusts prior to filling them. This process promotes a crispier bottom crust and is commonly known as "baking blind." It is an extra step that many recipes may not stipulate, but I find that it is worth the effort.
6
Roll out the crust and fit it into the pan. Chill, or preferably freeze, the dough until it is firm. Place a generous sheet of parchment paper or aluminum foil over the crust (there should be overhang on all sides to facilitate easy removal), fit it into the shell, and fill it with rice, beans, or reusable pie weights. Place the weighted crust into a 375 degree oven and bake it for approximately 20 minutes, until the edges just start to pick up some color and the bottom no longer looks raw.
7
Carefully remove the liner and weights, and return the shell for an additional 8 minutes or so. The pastry may puff up once the weights are removed. If this occurs, gently prick any air bubbles with a fork. Check the shell several times, re-pricking it as needed.
8
Remove the partially baked shell from the oven when the bottom is set and dry to the touch. Do not over bake or cracks may develop.
9
I seal my pastry shells as soon as they come out of the oven by brushing them with a bit of egg white. This helps keep the bottom crisp and usually fills in any small holes that might have been made when you pricked the pastry. Any large cracks can be repaired with reserved dough scraps; this is particularly important when using a very liquid filling. If you've forgotten to save your scraps, an emergency patching kit can be made by mixing a bit of flour with some water to form a paste that can be lightly spread on the shell as needed. It is best to try and time the blind baking process so that the partially baked shell is filled immediately upon being removed from the oven and placed back in the oven to complete the baking process.
--
However you have topped your pot pie, put it in the oven. Bake until the filling is bubbling and the top is a pretty color, hopefully around 20 minutes, possibly as little as 15, possibly as much as 30.
Now, go forth, and make excellent pot pie.
