ch. 8 of "investigating lois lane" talks about the period of months following superman's death and it's making me want to entertain a story where superman stayed dead, just the same way I often think about that re: batman in the late 00s era.

Memento Mori - DPxDC
What was beyond death. Was there anything at all? Was there nothing?
That was what he always wondered.
When Clark was a child, he looked up to his fictional hero: Danny Phantom. A half-dead guy in a comic book series that led to the most bisexual awakenings in the century.
Clark liked to go back and reread the comic books from Issue #1 (they were fairly short, but all parts of an “episode”, almost like those ads on shows, but the wait time was every two weeks). He tended to read them all in one sitting, and yet oddly enough, never disturbed as he murmured the made-up summoning spell under his breath.
He could’ve sworn he had been going through them for over an hour and not twenty minutes.
It was Phantom who inspired him to continue being Superman in his darkest moments. He also considered himself physical proof that Danny’s palette swap was enough to hide his identity.
The glasses ARE enough.
When Clark found out he had a clone, he was ecstatic to be able to teach Conner anything everything, to answer any questions his little brother had.
Danielle “Dani” Phantom and her awaited return in “Issue #46 D-stabilized” caused him to become a mama bear to Conner out of the fear he would melt within a few weeks. But it wasn’t like anyone at the Watchtower had to know that small detail.
Getting married to Lois was the best day of his life, the day of Jon’s birth also fighting for that first place spot in his mind.
He had a clone brother, a wonderful wife, a beautiful son, and an amazing group of friends that work together to protect the planet he calls home.
But everything started to fall apart when a protest against metas took it too far, Jon’s powers started to develop and he was seen accidentally tripping, falling, and catching himself by hovering a few inches above the pavement.
Jon said he considered himself lucky nothing scarred. He laughed everything off when it came to the topic.
But it shook Clark, Lois, and Conner to the core.
Memento mori.
It reminded Superman that despite his impenetrable skin, Death can come at any moment. Even for him.
—————————
When Danny was a little boy, he dreamt of reaching the stars, he wanted to be able to touch the moon, explore Mars, and roam the galaxy he resides in and beyond.
He read these comic books of a league of heroes, a team with space cops, super powered humans, a man dressed in a bat suit that was more effective at capturing rogues and villains than some of the powered members, aliens, and so much more.
He flipped through the weekly published comics, learning to read better than most at a young age. He had two favorites, Superman and Martian Manhunter.
Danny wanted to explore the stars like his heroes. He wanted to be able to fight as well as the big Bat. He wanted superpowers. He wanted to help people. He wanted to fight his own set of supervillains. He wanted to be able to succeed and be loved.
Oh how he got everything he wanted but the last.
Tucker and Sam were the only reason he hadn’t broken yet, the reason he was still standing.
The anti-ecto acts, the GIW, Vlad, Pariah Dark, and his- Jack and Maddie’s sadistic comments about ghosts were the last straw.
The hero always wins… they don’t die to the evil they want to stop… right..?
Right..?
The sound of a scraping scalpel, the buzz of the lights, and the squeals of pleasure - as his ghostly heart was found again and again and prodded again and again - filled his ears for an unknown length of time.
His cries for help were never answered until a summoning pulled at his core, it was a personal calling, someone had managed to find his calling card.
The tears of relief stung his eyes as the dissection table with his body strapped down to it was sucked into a summons portal.
He was spat out in front of kids, most likely teenagers, due to the shrieks of horror and surprise.
Oh… oh how he prayed to the Ancients that he’d live to see another day as a tears slipped out of his eyes.
Memento mori.
——————————
Jon found out about his comic book collection and wanted to show Damian.
Clark hummed as he typed up an official report on a rogue attack to send to the Watchtower.
His blood ran cold when he heard his son scream from over in Gotham.

Lois & Clark was such a deeply chaotic show because what do you mean they did a Clois fake married episode in Season 1 and then turned around 8 episodes later and had Lois get engaged to Lex for the season finale plot

[DC] Got a Secret? 🦇 With these two on the case, not for long! 🔎
I just think a mini series of self contained accidental Gotham-Metropolis team ups for them would be really neat! (Extra thoughts ⬇️)
Ive been chipping away at this for a few months between pieces since reading a post about them being headstrong friends so how i draw them has changed a little but i still love it!!
I forgot the plot exactly but it had to do w bruce investigating something that looks like a riddler+scarecrow team up crossing city lines, at the same time as lois investigating water-related incidents in metro
Its all a big cover for disguising a lex luthor plan i think! but i would love to read other ideas :D

Eddie returned with popcorn, candy, pretzels, chips, soda, and hotdogs. “Oh my god, Eddie… We’re not putting him down. We’re christening the TV,” Rose laughed. I didn’t understand the joke, but I was amused by the time and energy they put into making me happy.
“I wanted to give him the whole movie experience. Lane, wait—. Do you know any movie titles off the top of your head?” Eddie asked. “Anything that you’d like to see?”
I scratched my head. “Oh, Eddie… I don’t know anything about movies at all,” I replied.
“Lane, he’s gonna bring out the bin,” Rose whispered.
“What’s the bin?” I questioned.
“I’m so glad you asked! Stay here,” Eddie smiled. I sat on the couch with Rose while he went to his room. Eddie’s room was the thing of fairytales. Between his plants, movie posters, and weird animatronic creations strewn about his room, his room was a forest for the peculiar. I liked sitting in his room and drawing the strange things that came to mind. Rose brushed a stray eyelash from my cheek with her finger. I delighted in the intimacy of her gesture. “One sec!”
“Okay!” Rose and I answered at the same time. Rose chuckled and punched my shoulder.
Eddie dragged a storage bin into the living room. “Come on. Come look,” Eddie replied. I walked toward the bin and looked at Eddie’s VHS tapes and DVDs.
“They made a movie for To Kill A Mockingbird?” I questioned.
Eddie smiled at me. “Do you want to watch that first?” Eddie asked.
I shook my head as I dug through his movies. There were so many. I didn’t know where to start. “What is Scream?” I questioned.
Rose and Eddie nodded. “You hafta watch Scream,” Eddie replied. I nodded.
“Yeah, okay. Let’s do it,” I smiled. My phone rang. “Oh, hold on. It’s my father.” They nodded, and I stepped away to answer the call privately.
“Hi, Father. How are you?” I asked.
“I’m well. How are your classes?” Father asked.
“Oh! They’re amazing. I went to a Neurology symposium last week and sent you a copy of my notes with my letter… I’m so happy here, Father,” I replied.
“Are your roommates treating you well?” Father questioned.
“Oh, they’re wonderful people. Eddie builds such strange and beautiful things in his room… Rose and I plan to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes together next weekend,” I answered, “I’m about to watch a movie with them.”
“Well, I hope you have a lovely time. It sounds like this has been an enriching experience for you so far,” Father replied.
“It has. I love you, Father. I hope we can talk again soon,” I smiled.
“Of course. I have two surgeries this morning, so I can’t call you back today… But I’ll text you my schedule later. I love you too,” Father replied, “Goodbye, Laney.”
“Goodbye, Father,” I answered before hanging up. I returned to the living room and sat on the couch while Rose and Eddie shut the curtains and made popcorn.
“Was that your dad?” Eddie asked. I nodded and smiled at him. “How’s Dr. Hausler doing?”
“He has two surgeries this morning, so he’s staying busy,” I answered.
“Is your dad divorced? I never hear you talk about your mom,” Rose replied. I didn’t mind her asking because I knew about her mom. She told me one night when Eddie was out.
“I don’t know anything about my mother. We never talked about her when I was young. I have the faintest picture of a woman in my mind, but Father says—. I used to draw a couple. Blue eyes, dark hair, warm smiles. I thought my mother left my father for this man, but Father says the people I remember were a patient and her husband,” I explained, “I don’t know anything about my mother… I’m afraid I can’t tell you if she’s alive or dead.”
Rose and Eddie fell silent, and Rose hugged herself. “It’s okay… I had a great childhood,” I reassured.
“You draw a lot, but we never see your work,” Eddie replied. He wanted to lighten the mood, and I was grateful. “Is it personal?”
“Oh, no… I just—. No one’s ever asked. My sketchbook’s in my bedroom… Would you like to see it?” I asked. They nodded. I went to my room and grabbed the leather sketchbook my father gave me for the trip to Metropolis. I brought it to the living room, and Eddie and Rose sat beside me, patiently waiting for me to reveal my drawings. I’d never had friends to share my drawings with, but I was eager to see what they thought. I flipped my book open, and it landed on a picture of the woman.
“That’s the news reporter for The Daily Planet,” Eddie replied. I squinted at him. “You’ve seen her before?”
“I must have… What’s the woman’s name?” I asked.
“Lois Lane. Your dad did brain surgery on Lois Lane?” Rose questioned. I shook my head. The name seemed familiar.
“I drew my home, too,” I whispered. The popcorn popped in the background, distracting both of us for a moment. “This is the dock in front of my house.”
“Laney, this is beautiful,” Rose whispered.
“You lived on a lake?” Eddie asked.
“Uh-huh… We took a boat across in the morning, but I could swim the length of the lake in the summertime, but the garden was out back,” I explained. Lois Lane’s name plastered itself in my head as Eddie grabbed the popcorn from the microwave. Rose put the movie in the DVD player, and Eddie gave me the popcorn bowl and ran to his room. He returned with a video camera, and Rose shook her head.
“Eddie, not the camera—.”
“It’s his first movie. We can show the video to his dad on family week,” Eddie interrupted. I laughed and covered my face. Rose and Eddie playfully grabbed my arms to get me to look into the camera. “Come on. Smile for the camera, Laney.”
I grinned nice and big for him, and Eddie turned the camera toward the three of us. “We’re about to watch Scream with Lane. It’s his first movie, so we’re all a little excited. Should we press play?” Eddie questioned. Rose waved with the remote in hand. I nodded. Rose turned the TV on, and the DVD menu had four options. Rose pressed play.
**
“Rose! I had no idea she would die when I said she reminded me of you. I’m so sorry,” I apologized. Rose laughed into my shoulder.
“No, it’s okay. Tatum was hot, so it makes up for it,” Rose chuckled, “RIP to an icon.”
Eddie got up to make more snacks while I watched the movie. Rose took the camera and pointed it at Eddie. “Edward Michael Bloomberg—.” “Nope. My middle name’s not Michael,” Eddie replied.
“Rudolph?” Rose asked.
“Wha—? No! It’s Allan,” Eddie answered indignantly.
“Allan? Are you serious?” Rose chuckled. I giggled.
“And what are your middle names? Rose Wilson and Lane Hausler,” Eddie scoffed.
“Don’t have one… And legally, it’s Rose Worth. Not Wilson,” Rose replied.
“Lane’s my middle name,” I answered.
“What’s your first name?” Eddie and Rose questioned.
“Jonathan… My father’s called me Laney my whole life,” I answered. It was strange. I hadn’t thought about it much. I realized something that day. I wasn’t sure what it was, but I knew it’d change my life forever.

Au that everyone thinks Vicky Vale and Lois Lane are rivals but in actuality they are each others biggest fangirl. People really just take their disguised insults to different colleagues and misinterpret them as being about each other.
It lasts until the two met face to face in Gotham and they are jumping and talking excitatedly and asking each other autagraphs. Lois is going "Jimmy, Jimmy, take a picture of us please" and getting red when Olsen goes "ah for your Vicky fan Twitter account" while Vicky is looking for pens madly to get an autograph in her copy of the first Lois papper she ever read and that she keeps since. Clark is looking at scene fondly while patting Jack Ryder's back. Jack is sad cause he wanted to be included.

LOIS LANE PER EPISODE

DPXDC prompt. Wes Weston in Metropolis.
Lois Lane is a talented reporter and is proud of it. Her name has long been known for her scandalous investigations and  private interviews with Superman. Without exaggeration, she could call herself an extremely valuable worker of the Daily Planet.
So when she was assigned to teach the new unexperienced intern, who was completely unimpressed by her skills, Lois was more than unhappy. But the new guy was perfectly able to find common ground with people and efficiently carried out assignments, so she finally warmed up and even decided to do take him on an interview with members of the Justice League for a practice.
When they entered the room heroes were a little tense. Lois let herself be a little smug, realizing that they were used to her presence and the new man wasn’t seen as credible.
She turned to the intern to tell him something inspiring before they start to make him feel less anxious about work with such well-known personalities. And she cut herself short. The red-haired man's face expressed a strange mischievous satisfaction.
"Long time no see, Phantom. Or, should I say, Fenton."
One of the new members of the League quickly hid behind Batman and swore.
"Who the hell let Weston in here?!"
Within seconds, the conference room turned into Tom and Jerry’s film set.
"I’ve wasted the best years of my life on you, asshole! Get back on the ground and let’s talk man to man, Fenton!"
"Help!"
"I know where you live, you can’t hide from me! So listen here, you.."
"Get that damn stalker away from me!"
~~~~~~
Only at the end of the working day Miss Lane realize that Weston did not take a single photo or note during the entire evening. Wes doesn't respond to her outrage and says he's already taken care of it.
The next day, Phantom himself arrived at their office and immediately headed to Weston.
Danny: I brought a thumb drive with photos, "Mr. Jameson". May now Dobby be free?
Wes: Until next Tuesday. Paulina ordered me to drag you to school reunion.
Danny: What? Hell no, Valerie will be there. I'm not looking for death.
Wes: Not my problem, I’m still mad at you. Can't believe the photographer at the press conference where your identity was revealed was...who he was again? Oh, right, not me. Such a betrayal.
Danny: Come on, Wes, you were on vacation at this time.
Wes: Get out of here.
Danny: How to get you to forgive me? I swear on my life you’ll be the photographer at the wedding, okey?
Wes: The guarantee is so-so.
Lois Lane, investigating a story, has been pushed from the roof of a thirty story building!
She braces, takes a breath, and starts to say Clark's name.
But she's already being caught, held to a wide chest as she's carried to safety.
She's gently set down, and pats his chest twice as she steps away.
"Thanks Clark, lets-"
"Wait-Clark? Like, Clark Kent? Superman's your husband?"
Lois looks up.
That's not Superman.
That's an entirely different hero she's never seen before, but she knows that voice. She heard it literally less than an hour ago. It belongs to the overly eager intern that got assigned to her last week, who was supposed to be waiting at the bottom of the building.
"...Danny?"
"Well, this is awkward."
There's no "I" in Team but there are two in Migraine
Bruce had no issue with teamwork, despite what his children and colleagues might think. Teamwork was great. If done properly it was efficient, and it was good to have backup. Competent backup, at least.
Bruce helped found the Justice League. Obviously he was a supporter of teamwork.
However.
Some teams he really could have happily lived out his life without them ever existing.
He had a list.
One: Dick and Clark Kent
Clark had been the first hero he had introduced Dick to. It was a move he had regretted ever since.
He was glad the two of them got along, of course, but did they have to get along so well?
He could withstand torture but the two sets of sad puppy eyes attacking at the same time was on another level altogether.
Two: The Titans
Pros: Dick was making friends.
Cons: Dick was either away with his friends, or they came home with him. Really, all Bruce wanted was to spend one week without putting out any fires caused by teenage superheroes. Literal fires, not metaphorical ones. Well, actually there were plenty of those kind too.
Three: Dick and Jason
When Bruce first brought Jason home he wasn’t sure how Dick was going to react. And so maybe he panicked slightly and didn’t end up telling him for three weeks. In his defense, the voicemail he had left asking Dick to call him soon was left before the newspaper article came out.
Perhaps not his best moment.
Eventually, though, the two boys were introduced.
There was some yelling that took place, mostly directed at him, but other than that things seemed to go rather smoothly. Assuming, that is, that smoothly meant neither of them seemed to care about getting to know the other one, and mostly kept to themselves and their own activities.
And then, four months, two weeks, and five days after Jason first came to the manor, Bruce came home to discover the two of them had bonded over some unspoken activity that neither were willing to divulge. Alfred knew and didn’t disapprove so it couldn’t be that bad, but from then on out it was…well…
Bruce began the daily habit of checking his blood pressure.
Four: Talia al Ghul and Lois Lane
Bruce didn’t know how the two of them had met and he didn’t want to. See, Dick, he was okay with not knowing things. Sometimes. In this one instance, at least.
Five: Dick and Slade Wilson
Worst three weeks of his life.
Six: Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn
He was happy for them, he really was. He just wished they could be happy together somewhere less structurally damaging.
Seven: Jason and Harley Quinn
Explosion therapy was not a thing, despite both their arguments otherwise. They didn’t even give him a Joker effigy to blow up. They could have at least asked. He would have happily paid for that one and all the rest of them.
Eight: Tim and Barbara
 He wasn’t that old. He knew how to use his computer.
Nine: Jason and Cassandra
Too competent. They should never have been allowed on the same team for any game ever. If he heard one more complaint from any of his other children he was going to seriously lose it.
And then there was that one time the two of them disappeared for a week and no one, not even himself or Clark, could find them. They had turned back up with grins and minimal injuries, and Bruce had tried to not investigate, he really had. But he needed to know, regardless of how much he regretted it later. (A lot. He regretted it a lot.)
Ten: Dick, Jason, and Constantine
Bruce hated magic.
Eleven: Jason, Diana, and Barry Allen
No one knew how or why the three of them had teamed up. It had been four months of secret meetings and pointed looks and minor heists that couldn’t technically be traced back to them but Bruce knew. And then there was the regular day-to-day hero-ing. Diana, he could understand. That’s what she did. Jason? Had always been vocally opposed to getting too involved with the Justice League, but had also always looked up to Diana, so maybe that was understandable? Allen? The man was retired. And he wasn’t suddenly out of retirement for some reason, no. He was just there to “lend a hand” to the other two.
At least Bruce could comfort himself in knowing Jason was spending time with two respectable individuals. It was certainly a step up from his unfortunately ongoing acquaintance with Rayner.
Twelve: Stephanie and Hal Jordan
They should never have been allowed to meet. It was a disaster. For Bruce.
Jason had been the one to introduce them, as he had proudly let Bruce know after the first breaking news cycle hit.
Thirteen: Duke and Damian
Bruce would have told Jason how thankful he was that he was acting as the moderating adult influence with those two if he didn’t think Jason would start doing the opposite out of spite.
Jason would make a great parent someday.
Bruce would love a six month vacation.
Fourteen: Alfred and Martha Kent
He didn’t really need to explain this one, right? Everyone could just move on, continue with their lives and so on and so forth.
Fifteen: Damian and Batcow
Because a boy needs a cow and a cow needs an emotional support duck, turkey, cat, dog, rabbit, goat, and raccoon. Apparently. Tim and Jason were, in Bruce’s opinion, far too enthusiastic to provide research as evidence whenever needed (or not needed, as was usually the case).
Lois’s constant adversary throughout the decades was Superman. When Superman wasn’t around, she got to be the hero and she excelled at it, from “Lois Lane, Girl Reporter” to “The Death of Superman”. On her own, Lois is a fascinating character who fulfills the typical superhero narrative of fighting evil and catching bad guys, without the need for superpowers. Yet even in her self-titled series, almost every story revolved around Superman. While he was good for a front page scoop here and there, he was also a regular source of tears and frustration for Lois. He stole her stories, he embarrassed her, and he monopolized her time. In short, Superman is the worst thing to ever happen to Lois Lane. At the same time, he’s also the reason she exists. Lois was created to be a supporting character for the Man of Steel, and almost every comic book and adaptation that she’s appeared in bears his name in some capacity. There would be no Lois Lane without Superman. The same is true for most female characters in superhero comic books: they are primarily adjuncts to the stories of male heroes. This imbalance is not unique to superheroes. Throughout soci- ety, both in the real world and in entertainment, men’s narratives are dominant. They are disproportionately represented at all major levels, and their stories monopolize the public discourse. This doesn’t mean that women’s stories aren’t there, but they are more rare and have to be sought out. Even then, one often must dig through a lot of bad to find the good.
(SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show yet):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Lane has a cut out clip of Vicki Vale. Vicki Vale is a journalist in Gotham City. Her first appearance was in Batman #49 (1948) as seen in the panel here (W: Bill Finger, A: Lew Sayre and Bob Kane, I: Charles Paris, L: Ira Schnapp).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks like Jimmy is a fan of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. Good video game taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimmy mentions a psychic starfish and the one starfish in the DC universe who is psychic is Starro the Conqueror, who's first appearance is in Brave and the Bold 28 (1960) (the cover art here is done by Mike Sekowsky, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp) and has the power to mind control people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois, after barging into Perry White's office about a story, mentions Mt. Simonson. This is a neat name drop to Superman: The Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson, one of the nicest comic book writers you'll ever meet. She helped co-create John Henry Irons a.k.a Steel with artist of the Superman: The Man of Steel comic, Jon Bogdanove (really hope we get to see Irons in this show too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jon Bogdanove also gets a name drop here as does...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Jurgen, comic book writer and artist on the Superman comic in the 90s (also one of my favorite Superman artists).
Now who are these kids that call themselves the Newskid Legion? Well, they are a VERY deep DC cut and reference to the Newsboy Legion back in the 1940s. The group was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, LEGENDARY comic book creators.
Tumblr media
The page here is from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #16 (1986) with the art by Jack Kirby and Karl Kesel. Most of the Newskid Legion is named after the Newsboy Legion members
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gabby and Big Words here share names with their Newsboy Legion counterparts as does Flip Johnson...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who shares names with Walter "Flip" Johnson here on the cover of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olson #137 (1971) which was done by Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, and Gaspar Saladino.
Tumblr media
Patty, the cartoonist of the Newskid Legion homages this panel from Adventures of Superman #500 (1993) (W: Karl Kesel, P: Tom Grummet, I: Doug Hazelwood, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Albert DeGuzman), the first appearance of Superboy, Conner Kent/ Kon-El.
Tumblr media
But who is the one below that drawing? We'll his name is in Big Word's word puzzle, in the show. It's Jim Harper, the Guardian.
Tumblr media
Jim Harper becomes the Newsboy Legion's legal guardian despite their causing trouble for him. The page here is from Star Spangled Comics #7, the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian's first appearance, by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Whitney Ellsworth. You might've seen the Guardian on the recent Young Justice cartoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lois, Clark, and Jimmy go investigate about the smuggled robots in Metropolis, Jimmy makes a reference to super intelligent gorillas in France. This is a subtle hint at Monsieur Mallah, the Doom Patrol villain who will be in the show along with his partner, the Brain. Both made their first appearance in Doom Patrol #86 (1964) .
Tumblr media
The cover art here is done by Arnold Drake, Bob Brown, and Ira Schnapp.
Later in the episode we see Clark receive his powers and he is surrounded with electricity, giving off Superman Blue vibes when in the comics, Superman gained electricity powers and became Electric Blue Superman who's first appearance was in Superman #123 (1997) (cover art by Ron Frenz, Joe Rubenstein, Patrick Martin, and Todd Klein.
Chapter Eight: The Blackout (Conner's POV)
I slept at Reed’s two weeks after the party. I hadn’t slept much at all, though. Most nights, I tossed and turned until I woke up trembling and confused. I’d lost so much sleep that I wasn’t sure if I had a twin at all. I woke up beside Reed with a throbbing headache. I couldn’t stop shaking, “Hey… Conner?” Reed mumbled with his eyes shut. He reached out and touched my arm. “You’re shaking like a leaf.”
“Can we—? Can we take  a walk?” I stammered. Reed pressed his face into the pillow and patted my leg.
“It’s late,” Reed whispered, “Try to lay down. Come here.”
“No, I can’t. Reed, I can’t relax… I have to—. I’m gonna go. I’m gonna take a drive,” I whispered before kissing his cheek, “It’s okay… I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Conner, don’t go,” Reed begged.
“It’s okay… I’m not mad. I’m just—. I—.” I couldn’t think straight. I couldn’t catch my breath. As I slipped on my pants and shoes, I tried to hold on to a singular thought. I don’t know how I got there, but I sat in an unfamiliar living room with a man I’d only seen in passing. I had a cup of tea in my palms and a blanket wrapped around me.
“Do you know where you are?” he asked. I shook my head. “Do you know who you are?”
“I’m Conner Kent… You work at the Daily Planet,” I mumbled.
“I do… Freelance… I’m also a private investigator. My name is Vic Sage,” Vic introduced himself. He extended a hand, and I hesitated before shaking it.
“How did I get here?” I asked.
“I saw you standing outside the Daily Planet and recognized you as Lois and Clark’s kid. I thought you were on drugs… Are you on drugs?” Vic questioned. He shined a light in my eyes, and I flinched away.
“No. I don’t—. I don’t do drugs. I don’t even smoke weed… What time is it?” I asked. I patted my clothes for my phone.
“I don’t think you had it on you… It’s five a.m. You’ve been here for an hour. Do you want a ride back to the Daily Planet?” Vic offered. I nodded as I finished the cup of tea he gave me. I set it on a coaster and folded his blanket. “Come on… I’ll drop you off. Your parents might be there already.”
He took me straight there, and my Mom and Pop’s car was parked out front. Vic said he’d go in later, so I walked in alone. Mom noticed me first, and she made me sit down. “Hi, I was about to text you,” Mom smiled. She held my face in her palms. And that’s when she noticed… Mom could always tell when I wasn’t myself. “You’re sick… How long have you been sick?”
“Mom, I’m not sick—.”
“You should make a doctor’s appointment just in case… Conner, you don’t look well. And—.” She touched my cheeks with the backs of her hands. “You’re warm. Conner, we can talk later—.”
“About what?” I asked. “I can talk now… What’s up, Mom?” She sat me at her desk, and Pop looked up from his computer.
“Conner? Are you sick?” Pop whispered. I shook my head.
“No… What’s going on?” I questioned.
Mom crouched beside me and rubbed my back. “Your father and I talked for several months, and we think it’s time we move forward with our lives,” Mom answered. I knit my brows together and stared at her.
“Your brother isn’t coming home… It’s time we accept that, and I—. We’re planning on having your brother legally declared dead—.”
“No!” I shouted. I didn’t expect to be so upset about it. Mom grabbed my arm and attempted to calm me down. “Nobody asked me how I felt about this. You’re not even asking me. You’re telling me.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but Conner—. Conner, he’s been missing for fourteen years,” Pop explained.
“No, you don’t understand. I saw my twin at a party—.”
Mom tried to look into my eyes. “Conner, please. I know it’s hard—.”
“I did! I saw him. I—.”
“Bart told us… That’s why we’re doing this. You need closure,” Mom explained.
I huffed as I walked out and ran into Vic. “What happened in there?” Vic questioned.
“They’re gonna—. You don’t know—.”
“They’re having your twin brother declared dead,” Vic interrupted. I gasped for air, and he walked me to his car. “Hey, it’s okay… It’s okay.”
“They can’t do this. I saw my brother,” I whimpered as tears streamed down my face. “I’m not crazy… But I feel crazy. I can’t sleep at night anymore, and I—. My brother’s not dead, and it’s eating me alive. I can’t ignore him anymore.”
“Where’d you see him?” Vic questioned.
“On campus. I was at a party on campus,” I answered. Vic took a notepad out of his jacket pocket and started writing. He ripped out a page and handed it to me.
“I can look into it. Now… Where do you want me to drop you off before I look into this?” Vic asked.
“My apartment is three blocks from here,” I replied. I dried my face and settled down. “Did you say you’d look into it so I’d stop freaking out?”
“No. I never thought your twin was dead. I was a detective in another city back then, but I like to look into everyone I meet… So, when I moved here and started working, I looked into your parents and read about his disappearance. Everyone thought you two kids were terminally ill when he disappeared. It doesn’t seem plausible that someone would kidnap and kill a terminally ill child. If he’s still alive, like you said, there’s a chance he has no idea he was kidnapped. He might see his kidnapper as a parent, so if you aren’t emotionally prepared for that, tell me now—.”
“I want to know if he’s alive. That’s all I care about,” I replied, “I’ll sleep better once I know for sure.”
I got home and saw Reed sitting in the living room with Bart. “Conner, you left your phone,” Reed whispered.
“Bart, can I speak to you in the bedroom?” I asked. Bart looked at me with his big amber eyes, and I frowned. “What?”
“Conner, I’m sorry about earlier—.”
“Why did you tell my mom and pop about the party?” I snapped. “You had no right—.”
“What was I supposed to do? Let you drive yourself crazy over something you might’ve imagined?” Bart asked.
I was exhausted and angry with him. “You need...” I remembered no one else knew about my twin. “You need to mind your fucking business.” Bart opened his mouth to say something and caught himself.
“Fine… If that’s how you want it, Conner… But keep your guests out of our bedroom,” Bart muttered. Reed rubbed his neck as he watched Bart disappear into our room.
“Can I ask—?”
“Please don’t… I have to take a shower. Do you—?” Reed kissed me. I planned to ask him if he could wait for me, but the distraction was welcomed. “Care to join me?” I asked. Reed smiled and nodded.
