Ever wondered what a shark bite to a human head looks like?
Tumblr media
Meet Iona Asai, a pearl diver from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait. In 1937 Iona was diving for pearls off the boat Sau when he was attacked by a shark. According to Iona’s own account, the shark wrapped its jaws around his head and neck and bit down, but Iona dug his fingers into its eyes until it let him go. He managed to swim back to the boat, where he was dragged from the water by the captain and passed out.
Tumblr media
With Iona unconscious and heavily bleeding, and the nearest doctor over 100 kilometers (62 miles) away, the Sau made its way to the nearest populated island, where a school teacher provided them with medication. Iona’s injuries required over 150 stitches, which he received while conscious and without anesthetic.
If that wasn’t enough, they were later able to identify the species of shark, despite Iona never getting a chance to look at it properly. How?
They found a chunk of one of its teeth still embedded in the back of his neck almost a week later.
And do you want to know the really incredible thing? This wasn’t even the first time Iona Asai was attacked by a shark and lived to tell the tale, having survived an attack off the coast of Cairns previously.
Iona made a full recovery from his ordeal.
These images, printed on photographic postcards at the time, were donated to State Library of Queensland. You can view the full record here.

Europeansim Council Summit: Francesim, Iona and Pierreland play spoilsport
The 8 heads of state of Europesim met for a summit of the Europeansim Council, one of the major institutions of the Europeansim Union. The role of the Europeansim Council is to decide on the next directions of the E.U. in the coming months, and it is currently presided over by the Empire of Francesim for 6 months.
Tumblr media
Official photograph of the Europeansim Council summit.
Tumblr media
H.I.M Emperor Napoléon V of the French, who presided over the meeting, wanted to impose stricter police measures throughout the EU.
The topics discussed at the diamond table focused mainly on the security of member states. As a reminder, Francesim and Iona have been the victims of attacks on their sovereigns, Emperor Napoléon IV and Queen Viviana I, in recent months. These terrorist acts raise many questions about policing and surveillance measures in the Europeansim Union. A few years ago, Pierreland also had to deal with a regicide.
Tumblr media
H.I.M Emperor David of Pierreland brought his country's experience of crisis management to the diamond table.
While the national security vote is being prepared everywhere in the Europeansim institutions, uncertainty remains as to the severity of the legislation. This law is likely to have a major geopolitical impact on all Europeansim countries, allowing them to strengthen or not their surveillance measures, and leading to a clear reduction in individual freedoms.
Tumblr media
Pierreland's proposals did not meet with unanimous approval, particularly from the heads of state in Iona and Greecesim.
Some countries, such as Greecesim, condemned these exchanges as a "terrible mistake". Queen Viviana II called for calm, proposing "reinforced surveillance" rather than fully aligning herself with the vigorous police measures proposed by the French Presidency.
From this meeting, we can only conclude that the Europeansim Council Summit will require further sessions to achieve fruitful debates. A rift between the Europesim countries is more than tangible, and is worrying the people of the E.U.

(Follow up on ask) I want to try real hard to hike some part of the highlands, so anywhere up there really that I could get to by train.
And I’m also trying to go into Edinburgh to look around a bit! 🌿💚
(Also no pressure cause that is a big ask, just curious)
ah ok, highlands via train would be like west coast line up to fort william/mallaig, and tbh not super familiar with the areas (except for oban, which you can get a ferry to iona or mull etc from, which mull is vry nice. but check ferry things for that. also if you get off at luss or earlier at balloch you can get boat rides across loch lomond. loch lomond is so <3 i love going into the hills around there, haven't been to the arrochar alps tho which are on the side the train stations are on) Or you can get the train up from glasgow queen street in the inverness direction. i havent been to inverness but dunkeld & birnam on the way is very cute and has rly nice hikes from it (birnam hill!!, the hermitage!!, loch of the lowes). aviemore also has nice hikes going out from it (craigellachie nature reserve, plus steamtrain line up further north to abernethy forest type area maybe??? double check that). i'd stick to those lines rly for highland stuff. dont bother with aberdeen ive been told be so many people at this point (including from there) not to bother lol. its just boring. (unless youre using it to get on a ferry to orkney or shetland). .. hrmrmrmm for edinburgh. i am a bit of an edinburgh hater ,however the botanic gardens, the national gallery of scotland and lighthouse books are all nice. botanics are huge and nicely themed areas (and free except for the glasshouses which i've never been in) (but also out of th way of the city centre). national gallery has good stuff. lighthouse books is a queer-owned indie bookshop and has a rly nice selection of queer and political books but also various other local writers and things like that. its just rly nice. also Hadeel is palestinian gift shop items, so thats cool to go to i havent been tho. One world shop is also a nice fairtrade type shop. also i went to both holy cow cafe and lounge and the food was good . i will say tho that you absolutely can get into the highlands via edinburgh waverly but glasgow central + glasgow queen street have the west coast line + inverness route too, you'll need to go into glasgow for th west coast, in case you want to plan around that.

John Duncan (British, Scottish – 1866-1945) • Saint Bride • 1913 • National Galleries of Scotland
According to the legend of the Irish Saint Bride she was transported miraculously to Bethlehem to attend the nativity of Christ. Here two angels carry the white robed saint across the sea. The seascape reflects Duncan's fascination with the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Iona. The birds and seal provide an effective naturalistic foil for the supernatural angels overlapping the patterned border. Scenes from the life of Christ decorate the angel's robes, and may include the artist's self-portrait as the tiny clown (a holy fool) accompanying the procession of the magi on the leading angel's gown. – National Galleries of Scotland

ok so I know you’re writing and probably already thought of this but I’m case you didn’t: the differences in elven courting rituals and oceanic courting rituals, specifically when it comes to wedding gifts. if you have thought about this feel free to ignore but the way I see it
elves live a while, and probably know about the arranged marriages a decent amount of time before they happen, so in between wedding planning and normal life each half of the marriage is planning some extravagant amazing wedding gift like gardens of gold or giant tapestries and stuff like that
meanwhile ocean/swamp folk who don’t live as long probably have more personal gifts, even in arraigned marriages bc they’re still getting to know each other! but either way the gifts are more personal and specifically tailored to the other half
so keeping track we have Scott, panicking bc he has like zero time to plan a wedding and learn a language and make a wedding gift and so the necessary things for life in however little time he has, Jimmy, panicking bc he doesn’t know anything about scott, no one he knows knows anything about scott, and even when they finally meet scott isn’t exactly an open book! so Jimmy is trying to do the same things as scott (tjough his doesn’t need to be as extravagant) in addition to finding out who the hell he’s getting married to and also ruling a kingdom
AND (you thought I was done NO the adhdemons love this concept and filled the no-box fan void with fictional politics) you have Lizzie, Joel, Xornoth, and Iona, who also had to get gifts for each other
first I need you to know that I saw your url and had the immediate gut reaction of "oh same hat!" XD
Anywho
So courting traditions in general:
I don't have too much set in stone currently, lots of ideas and concepts though, because I'm half shaping the story around it and half shaping it around the story, because writing be like that (rip) but I do have a few things.
Rivendell is basically just Tolkein's elves partly isekai-ed into minecraft, lets be real. So I've yoinked the tradition from there of the bride-to-be's family gifting a jewel (usually of magical or historical or familial importance) to the groom-to-be as a sort of pre-dowry. Only because heteronormativity does not exist here it is usually a mutual exchange of gifts. Tapestries and other labor and skill intensive textile arts also play a role because of the importance of textiles in Rivendell culture (see the ask that I'm answering after this one for more details on that) And there is also just a general idea of "a demonstration of what you are bringing to the table" for the actual wedding exchange. Like the most intense and stressful art show where both your entire extended family and also your significant other/others's extended family will be judging it. (Exact form of art varies depending on the skills and interests of the elf in question; culinary, poetry, musical, metal working...the list goes on)
The Swamp has fewer actual universal traditions. Due to their recent (past few centuries) history they are basically two nations that mixed and mingled and also include a few different diasporas interspersed within them. Jimmy himself tends towards more Oceanic traditions, which include things like feats of bravery and provision. This will go both exactly as well as you think it will and genuinely very well. (Oceanic traditions tend towards dramatic and grand gestures and statements. Ability to protect and provide is a huge thing both in the Ocean and the Swamp.)
Also Jimmy absolutely panics and ends up asking a good dozen random citizens for advice.
You also have the added layer of this specific instance being an arranged marriage (which isn't especially unusual) between two empires (which is wildly unusual at their social level) That custom is, in fact, purely an Oceanic one. (Which is why Joel and Lizzie were the previous example)
Most/all of the other Empires don't tend to intermarry their royals because enough Empires don't use familial succession models that it renders it fairly unstable as an alliance technique. There's more context for the Oceanic take on it but that is a whole nother post/will be in the fics explicitly.
The point of all this is that both parties are kind of stressed and trying to figure out how to compromise/accommodate while not really having a fully applicable framework for this situation (on Rivendell's part.)
Rivendell barely has interacted with the other empires for generations let alone married them.
Xornoth and Iona actually had it fairly easy, outside figuring out how to navigate the religious minefield that is Xornoth's entire existence. It was a very matter of fact, business like courtship that Scott and Iona ran with all the stringent focus of a military operation (which it basically was) and not even Xornoth's tendency towards chaos could really do much in the face of that.
In the context of like, personal gifts Joel and Lizzie actually got off really easy because by the time they got married-married they'd technically been married for several years already.

Viviana II & Napoléon V Meet In Paris
Queen Viviana is making her dipolmatic debut as Queen of the Ionian Union! During her informal visit to Iona's neighbor to the West, The Queen met with Emperor Napoléon V in an offical capacity. The royal, now officially 23, paired Marie-Odile's Leaf Broach with an off the rack Beulah London dress, retailing for 667 Euro. The heads of state met to discuss the the talks of potential construction of a highspeed rail system across the Europesim Union. While French Conservatives have criticized the use of public funds for such an expansive project, the Emperor seemed eager to hear the proposals presented by Her Illustrious Majesty. The Ionian Union has been at the spearhead of the project since its conception and this official meeting with the founding nation of the EU will speak loudly for its assured prevalence in Europesim's new future.

Just like his dad but yet ended up being picked by Graves to join the Shadow company instead.
Background Story:
Nigel was born in the state but his blood is Scottish. Just like his mother's side of the family. Except his accent is not like Scotland. If he wanted to, he could.
He's been a prankster ever since he was a boy. Loves to make some gadgets out of scraps and use it on people just for fun. He even got in trouble once in Elementary and once in High School. His mom gave him a good scolding.
His father wasn't around, due to his job. His father has been a CIA Agent for a LONG time ever since he married his mother. He usually sometimes visits Nigel and his mother and his sister. And gave them gifts to make it up for loss times.
Nigel doesn't mind his dad missing out most of the time. He knows that his job is important. And that is what makes him feel so inspired by his dad.
He was planning to take classes in college to earn a degree that is related to a CIA career. But his father doesn't want him to because he needs his son to stay and watch over his mother and little sister. Which Nigel also understands.
His mother could see that Nigel wanted to be like his dad to protect the world. And going on adventure instead of staying home. So being a spoiling mother as she is. She suggested to him that he should sign up for Military.
Which Nigel finds intriguing. So he decided to sign up for it until he was 18.
He finds it hard at first because being a bit scrawny at that time is difficult for him to do some physical training. But he never gives up because he doesn't want to waste his family's expectation of joining this military. So he has to think smart.
During the test. They have decided to train them to hide in plain sight. Squirrel knows he'll be ok because of how much of a good hider he was when he was a kid. Even playing hide-and-seek with his little sister too.
So Nigel have been hiding in a good spot to snipe the opposite team.
And once the higher ups saw this, they were very impressed and decided to enlist him. Nigel already told his family that he got in. And they are VERY proud. Even his dad.
So serving in the military for 7 years now and he's already risen up to the rank of being a Sergeant. He was very proud of himself and started to keep on working hard. And also, his performance had caught the eye of someone who took much more interest in him.
Commander Philip Graves. The leader of the Shadow Company. He saw Nigel’s performance, he saw his potential and he saw his skills as well. He picked him to join his team which Nigel gladly took.
The rest of his story and how he ended from being a Shadow to a Warrior. That would be the story for later. 😉

November 25th 1034 saw the death of Malcolm II at Glamis.
There's a lot to take in here, and a lot of supposition, it gets like that when you're delving into the history almost a thousand years ago.
Malcolm had been King since 1005, at this time Scotland was far from the nation we know it to be today, according to the Irish annals which recorded his death, Malcolm was ard rí Alban, High King of Scotland, this was a title given to what was probably the most powerful of the rulers, his fellow kings included the king of Strathclyde, who ruled much of the south-west, various Norse-Gael kings of the western coasts and the Hebrides and, nearest and most dangerous rivals, the Kings or Mormaers of Moray.
To the south, in the kingdom of England, the Earls of Bernicia and Northumbria, whose predecessors as kings of Northumbria had once ruled most of southern Scotland, still controlled large parts of the south-east.
Malcolm, or Máel Coluim mac Cináeda, to give him his ancient name, was ruthless, he sought to make sure to secure his family’s right of succession to throne, to do this he set about eliminating any possible claimants to the throne. There are scant details of the exact circumstances, but notable casualties included the grandson of Kenneth III, in 997, the killer of Constantine III is credited as being Cináed mac Maíl Coluim, “Kenneth son of Malcolm”. Now the historians debate whether this was “oor” Malcolm here, but don’t fully discount it.
John of Fordun a chronicler who we rely on a lot, writes that Malcolm defeated a Norwegian army in almost the first days after his coronation, but this is not reported elsewhere. Fordun says that the Bishopric of Mortlach (later moved to Aberdeen) was founded in thanks for this victory over the Norwegians, but this claim appears to have no foundation, so although Fordun is a very respected base for historians to delve into, I think we can probably put this down to a more modern phenomenon-Fake News!
The first reliable report of Malcolm’s reign is of an invasion of Bernicia, which is now south-eastern Scotland and North East England. It resulted in a heavy defeat, by the Northumbrians led by Uchtred the Bold, later Earl of Bernicia, which was reported by the Annals of Ulster. A second war in Bernicia, probably in 1018, was more successful. The Battle of Carham, by the River Tweed, was a victory for the Scots led by Malcolm and the men of Strathclyde led by their king, Eógan II, so the neighbouring Kings were not afraid of getting together for some English bashing, this was a time England was having to deal with heavy interference from the Norsemen.
Meanwhile during The Battle of Carham, in modern day Strathclyde down to the Tweed, King Eógan the Bald was killed, this is generally thought to have been when Malcolm, know by the southern tribes as Forranach’ meaning the destroyer took Strathclyde under his wing as part of the Kingdom of a growing “Scotland” but it was not fully part of the nation until Malcolm III, ( Canmore )
The good work he had done for his sons may have been for nothing, there is no evidence either survived after the year 1030, so the crown would pass to his grandchild. Truth be told the evidence he actually had sons is quite flimsy. He was a canny man though, and had married his daughters off wisely, to the Norse Earl Sigurd of Orkney., thus staking a claim for his forebears to the northern regions.
Strathclyde was to come back and haunt him though, Malcolm tried to place his grandson Duncan (later Duncan I of Alba) on the throne of Strathclyde. This displeased the Britons who had taken their eye off the ball while dealing with those pesky Vikings, but they it led to Malcolm’s assassination at Glamis on this day in 1034.
As per usual there are differing stories about how he died, on say fighting off bandits, another he was killed by the sons of Máel Brigte of Moray, a notable Pictish leader
He was buried in the graveyard at Saint Oran’s Chapel on the Isle of Iona.
Of his Dynasty, and his daughters he had placed in powerful families, the one wed to Earl Sigurd of Orkney, and their son Earl Thorfinn went on to bring much of Caithness and Sutherland into Scotland. One married Crínán, the Abbot of Dunkeld, and their son Duncan went on to succeed Malcolm II as Duncan I. And the third married Findlàech, the sub-king of Moray, and their son Macbeth went on to kill Duncan and become King Macbeth.
It’s all a bit complicated trying to piece things together through so many different sources but I hope the post makes some some sort of sense. A stone at Glamis is said to mark where he died, but another source tells me it is his gravestone contradicting the source that said he is buried on Iona! Such is the plight of trying to put a post like this together…….

Scotland Fix of the Day: I’m excited to say that in a couple of weeks I’ll be back in Scotland gazing at Eilean Donan castle after sailing down the Caledonian canal and out into the Inner Hebrides. I'll be aboard the Lord of the Glens with National Geographic Expeditions, a trip I've done before. Two hundred years ago industrious Scots were digging this historic canal, building it large enough to carry a 32 gun frigate, at the time of the Napoleonic wars. It’s considerably more peaceful now, wildflowers were growing along the canal trail on this morning as we hiked along the canal trail, catching up with the boat at the next loch. The canal starts in Inverness and ends near Ft. William. In between it connects Loch Ness (montser there), Loch Oich (might have a monster) and Loch Lochy, past castles, villages and pubs, through stunning scenery and the kind of history any Outlander fan might relish. The Lord of the Glens always draws a crowd as we ascend the locks in Fort Augustus. Back in the day when the locks were operated by capstans it took half a day to get through but now it’s usually about 90 minutes. After a stop on the Isle of Eigg (or maybe Rum) in the Small Isles we'll be on to Iona, always a pretty sight with boats coming and going. Granite boulders forming the Street of the Dead (Sraid nam Marbh) leading off to Iona Abbey have lain here on Iona for more than 1,000 years. Along this processional way the bodies of Scottish Kings (MacBeth included) and royalty were carried to their graves in Reilig Odhráin from Martyr’s Bay, where Viking raiders killed 68 monks in 806 AD. In the evening we dock in the harbor at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, looking out at what has to be one of the prettiest waterfronts of any Scottish island village. It’s famed for the signature red, yellow, and blue buildings that the children’s television show “Balamory” made famous. It's a terrific trip, full of history, great landscapes and culture. And who knows, we might get a dram of whisky along the way. #scotland #highlands #outlander #epic_landscape #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/aGvrQRc

(Edouard) Sire, this is the entrance of His Royal Highness, the Duke Oliver of Rothsey, heir to the kingdom of Scots.
Tumblr media
(Napoléon, salutes) Your Royal Highness. (Oliver) Your Imperial Majesty. As a representative of the Scots, but also as a friend, I offer my deepest condolences to you and the Imperial family.
Tumblr media
(Napoléon) Thank you. I would like you to attend with my family and myself the imperial mass, after this interview, in honour of my father.
Tumblr media
(Oliver) I will be there, of course... If you feel the need, I will be there to help you. It's a real tragedy.
Tumblr media
(Napoléon) Francesim will respond forcefully to these attacks, justice and order must reign from now on. I will not bend to the violence of an extremist minority.
Tumblr media
(Oliver) I understand your reaction, Your Majesty. As you may have heard, my family has been through a very similar situation in the past… About my grandfather, Emperor Henry III (Napoléon, pensive) Indeed, my parents were present during the attack. They often remained evasive on this subject...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Jean) I particularly remember the event, Sire. Your father, Emperor Napoléon IV, was particularly shocked by the assassination in Pierreland. It marked his reign forever, just as it strengthened his friendship with Emperor David of Pierreland. Our countries will emerge, once again, more united than ever. (Napoléon) I see... Your Royal Highness, have we received any news from Emperor David de Pierreland? (Joachim) Yes, Your Majesty, as well as from various nations: from Her Majesty Queen Viviana of the Kingdom of Iona, but also from Claostein, or the Kingdom of Corrilea... (Napoléon) Good. You can show me all this after the meeting.
Tumblr media
(Oliver) His Imperial Majesty, Emperor David of Pierreland, surely has much experience and advice to share with you about recent events. However, my uncle acted in fury, I don't think that's the way to go. I know that you will know how to do the best for the Francesim, Your Majesty.
(Napoléon) Please, Oliver, let's talk about it over lunch. I'm intrigued by the whole thing.

(Jean) Je me souviens particulièrement de l'événement, Sire.
