Adrien Agreste as a victim of abuse

First of all, of course, trigger warnings: do NOT resume if you are sensible to the topics discussed. I will be referring to abuse and mentioning suicide/suicidal ideation.

Second, don't expect this to be an amazing analysis because I'm dead tired from work and also I'm just bad with wording and organizing in general. Lastly... Some of this might not have concrete evidence and might just be deduced/theorized.

Do not come at me with that sentimonster theory. This is on abuse (and Adrien relating to it).

THIS IS LONG, so... Yeah.

Let's start with some basic things.

Types of abuse

There's quite a few types of abuse. This comes down to physical abuse, psychological abuse (emotional abuse, gaslighting, brainwashing which I'll discuss later), sexual abuse, financial abuse, neglect.

I will leave psychological abuse for last because there's just... too much about it.

Physical abuse

The first thing that comes to mind is CHAT BLANC. It's unacceptable and inexcusable, it does not matter if he were protected by his suit.

All matters is he knew that was his son and struck him, hard. Really, really hard. Twice. HE KNEW THAT WAS HIS SON, there was no more "He didn't know".

He knowingly provoked physical harm (among other harm, but I'm on the subject of physical abuse here) to his teenaged, fragile son.

*THEORY: Were Emilie and Gabriel ever the striking type of parent? Hitting their child into submission? While it certainly wouldn't top bursting him through the ceiling and smacking him by the Eiffel Tower, I feel like it is possible. Maybe more sparcely so, so that they can maintain that they're not that bad.

Yes, I claim Emilie was awful too.

That is all I will mark on this one. I know he has been in physical danger before, but I feel like that fits more into neglect (but correct me if I’m wrong).

Sexual abuse

While Gabriel has never abused him sexually nor put him in a situation where he would necessarily be sexually abused, he might have indirectly caused at least some harrassment. Take this with a grain of salt, as this is just me theorizing.

They made him into a child star. So many celebrities suffer with their privacy violated, disrespectful fans, reporters, paparazzi, etc. Are you going to tell me there wasn't a single time where someone might have tried something inappropriate? I can't wrap my head around that.

So this is basically what I mean. Gabriel hasn't caused direct sexual abuse, but he might have indirectly brought it upon his son by the life path he picked for him.

Financial abuse

Again, I don't really have much of a leg to stand on, this is mostly theorizing.

Look. The boy has a massive house. His own room is 3 times my whole apartment. He has a lot of games, music, technology, etc. But how much of it is just Gabriel throwing material stuff at him?

I feel like Gabriel would be very suspicious with the money. Even though it's Adrien's earned money as a model, I feel like Gabriel has way more control over it than we know. We know Gabriel likes to control, so why wouldn't he control his income? Probably masking it as a considerate help, when in fact it's just to keep him in place.

Imagine Adrien one day just had enough, he decided to run away. Do you think Gabriel would allow him the resources to survive without him? He is abusive and he will use his power imbalance to his advantage. Of course, there might be friends to help him out with things, but still, this is at the very least a last ditch effort to make him come back. Because Adrien has to depend on him.

One of the two most present types in the Agreste family is,

Neglect

He just doesn't care.

He doesn't talk to his son. When he does, he doesn't even look at him. He's lucky if he's even facing him. He doesn't eat with his son. When he schedules meals with him, he doesn't come. He doesn't come to important things for him, he doesn't share in his enthusiasm, he doesn't even try to look interested.

He speaks monotonously, he sounds bored.

And here's why I didn't put his physical danger as example in physical abuse — because it's neglect. He doesn't know it could get his son it danger, but it might. It could even kill him, but he does it anyway. He does not care.

In GORIZILLA, he did know it's Adrien, but he did not expect him to jump off a damn building. However, he shouldn't have tried his stunt in the first place. He just didn't care.

In fact, he even ran off in the first place because Gabriel just didn't care enough to even listen to a simple question.

Now let's get to the big bad guy.

Psychological abuse

Honestly, I don't even know where to start or how to finish. This is such a big element of his abuse and I just hope I won't ramble too much.

This is bad. Now you don't have to agree with me, but I'll even go to the length of calling him brainwashed. Because, Emilie did play a part in it. I don't have definitive proof of it, but I have a really strong feeling she did. There's just hints and pieces scattered throughout the series.

Okay... So where do I even begin with this?

Perfection. His son must be perfect. He's carrying that weight on his shoulders everyday.

Giving him a packed schedule so that, while he's somewhat permitted fun, he doesn't have time for it. Great one, Gabriel. That ought to play a number on someone's head.

Lying is big on the scale, we know lying is big in his family (hence his problems from that). Lies about his past, lies about his mother, lies about Nathalie, lies about [Gabriel] himself, maybe even lies about Adrien. Secrets all over, the secret lair, his supposedly dead mother who they seemingly never stopped grieving actually hidden away down low in their home.

Broken promises. Promising something, then taking it away for no reason. (Take CAPTAIN HARDROCK. I know he let him out in the end, but it was still awful to do that to him)

He's not worth knowing anything, even when it's his business. He's not worth the truth. I understand how lies and secrets can become such a touchy subject for him, when his remaining family doesn't care enough to even provide him with the truth or some explanation. Granted, the truth is so heavy, but.. then again, they did it to themselves.

Invalidating his feelings, criticizing him, discouraging him. Saying that he's had enough emotions, that he's overly sensible. That invalidates his feelings, making him feel unimportant, that his feelings don't matter or maybe that he is actually exagerated to think a certain way.

Criticism kinda bundles with the whole perfection thing. He criticizes his every little mistake. In the above example with CAPTAIN HARDROCK, he broke his promise because he mistapped one note on the piano.

One singular note.

And keep in mind that while he was practising, Gabriel sat facing him, almost as if to make sure he knows he's being watched, that he knows he sees and observes everything, as if to make him even more nervous.

Gabriel wants to dominate his parental relationship with fear. That Adrien should know that his word goes, that anything less is not enough. It's even show in the way he addresses his father.

(French - VOUS used as a formal/polite pronoun that is used for authority, your elders or strangers, certainly not family)

(French - PÈRE, meaning father. More informally, he could use papa, meaning dad.

However, when referring to Emilie, he uses maman. I still believe she was bad too though and he was sort of programmed to see her in a good light.)

Furthermore, in THE COLLECTOR, Gabriel purposely made chaos and akumatized himself with the full intent of making Adrien scared and guilty, that he's the reason his father is suffering. That is messed up on all levels.

Just the mental torture of going through that. That is a whole different level of guilt tripping.

Speaking of guilt tripping, he already guilt tripped him in that same episode with that damned book. While at the same time threatening his livelihood/freedom because of a simple mistake that adults can make, let alone teenagers.

School is like his little key to the cage, twirling it around everytime he misbehaves. He knows he can count on just taking him out of school if he doesn't obey. The thing he cherishes most, the thing he fought so hard to achieve, to finally get, what he wished for... It just doesn't matter for Gabriel.

If something bad happen, he can just blame it on his son again. Take SANTA CLAWS. He neglected him, as usual. He ran off and was awfully depressed. When he came back, he was blamed for not being there when his father finally decided to move his ass and try something for a change.

Or NEW YORK, where he practically dragged his son to NY to then blame him for coming. And you know what's sadder? That he actually took that. He said that his father is right, coming here wasn't a good idea (or however that was phrased). As if he is to blame. As if it was solely his decision, his dumb idea, and that his father was just a happy lil parent just doing what his child wishes. It's awful.

We've already established that Gabriel just doesn't care how he torments his own son as long as he gets what he wants, but we've seen best how diabolical that truly is in CHAT BLANC, again.

Firstly he plotted to break him up from his girlfriend, the one and only little joy in his life, only to akumatize her. He made her suffer, and he made his own son suffer, full on sobbing to his bodyguard to let him go after her.

(Which he did... The one person in this household who actually cares)

He found out then that he is Chat Noir. So...?

He reveals everything to him in the midst of the fight. So unexpected, so shocking, so devastating. Adrien was so furious that he ran at him to cataclysm him, but he couldn't; he stopped right before.

And you know what? Gabriel knew he wouldn't do it. He didn't even flinch. Instead he proceeded to use this moment of vulnerability to abuse him physically, only to add to his already skyrocketing stress levels.

While he cowers away in fear, Gabriel has the guts to say that if she loved him, she'd let him save his mother. The absolute manipulation, the mental gymnastics. Trying to make it sound as if he is trying to be the good guy and she is the bad one standing in his way to happiness when it's in fact all him.

And all of this... All of this torment, just so that his mind is so broken, that he's so devastated, so ruined that he can't resist akumatization. It's despicable.

Let that sink in. He took advantage of his son's already weak mental state that was caused by him in the first place to aid in his mission to achieve the two jewels. He revealed everything suddenly, in the worst way, he struck him, he mentally tormented his son who was begging him to stop, to just be left alone.

I'll tell you, that isn't the request of someone who has it together. That is his mind telling him basically "WE HAVE TO LEAVE, FAST", "WE'RE IN DANGER". He wants to not deal with it, he wants to escape, he wants to flee. It's to that broken state that his own father has brought him.

But his father didn't care. He used it to akumatize him. He tried to make his son murder his own girlfriend with his now uncontrollable powers, further enforcing his influence by telling him to obey like he was just his mindless puppet.

He even pointed his power at his father at one point. His emotions are so mixed up, his mind is so upside down right now. He loves his father, he fears his father, he despises his father with his whole being that part of him would want to kill him off, but again, he loves his father and cares about him, so he doesn't. Contradictory emotions all in one place driving him crazy.

In the end, he decides to try and kill himself.

He directs the powerful, uncontrollable cataclysm on himself. This is the end. There's no way he'll kill Ladybug. There's no way he'll kill his father either. Remember that he was broken down at this point and his instinct was to flee. This was the solution to him.

If he died, then it would just end.

But he didn't. Instead, he managed to kill everyone off... But himself. How tragic is that? And all of that because of his own father.

That version of himself was erased once Ladybug fixed it. But I can't help and think at times how that Adrien never got his happy ending. He was abused his whole life, his own father broke him down and ended up murdering everyone and everything he loved, leaving him all alone in a quiet world, no sound, no emotion, no nothing.

He was deakumatized, only to find out that Ladybug will leave him. He understands, but I can't imagine how painful that is. Waking up from your craze to find out this is basically the end. This was your story. At least that universe's version of your story. You never got happiness. It just ended.

I know I talk a lot about CHAT BLANC. That episode did a real number on me and no matter how many times I watch it, I still get emotional about it. It's tough to watch, honestly.

Objectifying is another thing. Adrien just seems like a trophy. He treats him like a trophy. Even to Ladybug, he brags about how perfect he is... Yet, he never compliments him to his face. Why is that? Yeah, Gabriel is proud of Adrien... In the same way I'd be proud winning a medal in some competition or whatever.

That on top of him being his model, using him for his ads, even hiding the truth behind what those ads are even for... He is a trophy, a marketing strategy, a brand image.

Then comes the whole mess of micromanaging every aspect of his life... It's just suffocating.

But why does Adrien keep loving his father is he's so abusive?

It's ...complicated. Gabriel has shown moments of love. Moments of care. And that's what Adrien craves. Often times, it's these moments that make victims question their beliefs.

Yeah, maybe he did do that or say that, but look, he's given me attention. He hugged me. He watched a movie with me. He spoke sincerely (not really) with me. That has to mean something, right?

It's a cycle that drives him crazy and makes him stay. It makes him confused, this rollercoaster. Deep down, he's aware of how his father is, but he keeps forgetting. His father makes him depressed, but yet craves his validation and love. He's so shocked and so pleased when he gets it. Maybe if he tries better, he'll get more. Just maybe, if he's better. If he's better than perfect, perhaps then it will work.

There's just so much more I could add but it's already late. Feel free to add though if I missed key elements or if there's anything of interest you'd like to point out, because I'm sure I missed a lot. I'm trying my best.

Well... Now that we've done all that, let's get to what's even scarier.

Brainwashing

And this is where Emilie comes into play too. We don't know much about her, but I'll throw hands if all of this just foreshadows nothing.

Adrien only started going to school when she passed. Him and his father never stop mourning her, even when she's been gone for so long. Granted, I don't blame him since his house is covered in depressing photos of him, but this seems much more than it. It's strange.

He idealizes her, remembers her fondly, remembers her almost like too good of a person despite the fact that, ironically, he has more freedom now than he had with her.

In Wishmaker, we discovered that Adrien basically has no identity of his own and has never had his own dream. His dream was always to be what his parents wanted him to be. Isn't that eerie? Like they conditioned him, brainwashed him all his life to be their puppet, to know that they know best, especially Emilie. To know that she's everything he needs, that he's content with just that, and made him believe so.

And this image is so off. There's no way this is a mistake.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Emilie and Gabriel's eye colors are switched around. It's such a small detail that makes up for such a big thing. What does it mean?

Does it mean that Adrien's memories are played with? That what he remembers is not the truth? If so, then it makes the whole brainwashing idea so much more real and so much more terrifying. To think that his parents (Emilie included) would twist him so much that even his memory is incorrect. He can't even count on his own recollection of events.

They made him a shell. He lives, but he's a nobody.

Everything is programmed, conditioned, manipulated, twisted, broken down and jumbled together. It doesn't make any sense, but it does in his mind. That's all he knows. Or at least all he knew until he was finally allowed out.

How does all of this affect Adrien?

In way too many ways to describe, but I'll try to keep it short.

Because he's been isolated and conditioned all his life, he has no clue how the real world works. It also makes him a people pleaser, and someone who lets people step all over him. It makes him want to overcompensate as Chat Noir, because he can't as Adrien.

Chat Noir is his escape. It's when he gets to be free, and gets to be with Ladybug.

While his crush it's endearing, I do believe I can attach some dose of mental illness on his selection. She was his first real friend. One he could be truly himself with... Or, his most outgoing self. He's had trust between them in the past, he felt accepted, he felt loved. We know he gets so little of that, so he ends up putting her on a pedestal. While it might sound exagerated to others, I do believe his words in HACK-SAN that he wouldn't be able to bear losing her. To him, it's like a lifeline.

It's what gives color to his life. Because, without her, his life is grey. It's not worth living. It's depressing, but it's true. For someone so optimistic, he bottles up so much and ends up being incredibly depressed (to being borderline suicidal).

Another consequence of his abuse was the fact in itself that he can't express himself. If he does, he explodes, or comes across differently. Besides, he's a people pleaser. He doesn't want to upset others. He doesn't want others to hate him, to dismiss him, to forget him. He wants to feel important to somebody. He wants to know his existence has a meaning. That he's not just a parasite on this world.

More consequence: explosive anger. He's usually collected, but when he isn't... Damn. That anger isn't healthy. It consumes him. He doesn't talk about it, he doesn't exteriorize it, and breaking a wall sure as hell won't help him in the long run.

The way his hand trembled on his staff, the way he just smashed that wall into nothing. It was all just impulse. And this is something he sees in the household too. He knows his father is impulsive. Children do subconsciously mimic what they see, it's how they learn to traverse life. But how does he traverse life when everything he learns is upside down?

Letting people step all over him: We've seen it time and again. The first example that comes to mind is Chloe. When did he first give her that ultimatum?

DESPAIR BEAR, season 2. A whole season of him just allowing her to make him uncomfortable and be stepped on.

But did he hold on that ultimatum? No. He was too soft to do it. He finally enforced it, but only in season 4. And who knows if it will actually stay this time? Adrien is easily swayed.

As a consequence, Adrien also hates lies and secrets. Granted, everyone would feel a little off if there was so little communication, but there's more to him. Everyone lies to him. It's almost like they don't care about him, like she doesn't care about him when she lies so much, when she hides so much from him. Their relationship are at a breaking point, where their miscommunication is going to cause... I'm not sure what, but not something good either way.

Let's get to the worst of it, honestly. Suicidal ideation. Am I going too far with that? I don't know, but not in my eyes. Maybe he doesn't go out with the thought of killing himself, but you know what? Adrien is an impulsive person. He doesn't need to think. It's his feeling. The feeling that he has to go down, to die. A lot of people are reckless when they're suicidal. They'll get themselves in unnecessary danger, risking their lives. And while a lot of it was to protect Ladybug, there was also times where there was really no reason.

The most worrying ones are GUILT TRIP and CHAT BLANC (yes, again). CHAT BLANC, we talked about it; he brought the power on himself with the full intent of ending himself.

In GUILT TRIP, while yes, he was affected by Guilt Trip's power, none of his friends jumped to suicide from this. There has to be something seriously wrong for him to make that leap.

As the sentimonster played with his fragile mind, it all became clear: he should just end himself. I firmly believe that's what he was trying to do. And again, he's the only one who leapt from negative thoughts to suicide. That's not a leap everyone makes.

At this point, his smile always seems so fabricated and forced too. It’s like he’s a doll.

In conclusion, our boy needs therapy asap. His father to be imprisoned, and him to find happiness some way. To learn to trust, to learn to love himself before he loves others. To learn to color his own life. That he is the sunshine in his own life.

God, this was so long. I'm so sorry if I missed things or if I didn't make sense at some points. I really wanted to make this post for some time, but I struggle with wording and expressing my thoughts and organization, so it was difficult. But I always love when I see posts like this, so I hope it will bring a similar feeling.

And please bring your own theories and ideas and observations because I'd love to read more. Adrien is such a complex, layered character and a somewhat dramatic/tragic character. Oof.

Diluc knows Kaeya is just trying to get a rise from him, that he’s giving him what he wants. He’ll start physically blocking anyone’s path to you, looming over almost like a bodyguard. Diluc’s presence is intimidating and effective in warding off people he finds irritating. He’ll act like he doesn’t know what you’re talking about if you mention how close he is, but there’s an almost indiscernible blush on his cheeks.

While you’re not paying attention, Diluc will motion to his weapon, scaring off anyone brave enough to come speak to you. When you turn around he’s back to wiping down glasses. If he needs to distract you, he’ll offer free drinks, not that he ever makes you pay anyway. The few times you do manage to convince him to let you pay for your own tab, the money is “mysteriously” sent back to your residence by mail.

Bonus Childe:

Childe is not held back by the same moral qualms that Diluc is. This, mixed with the extensive network of Fatui agents at his fingertips, makes for a horrific combination. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Whether you’re aware of it or not, he’s already having people keep tabs on you. This includes people that you speak to as well. While the Fatui don’t entirely understand why they’re being asked to watch you, like hell they’re going to question a Harbinger on the bizarre orders.

You’ll be having a pleasant conversation with someone, only to feel a shadow looming over you. Then there’ll be an arm wrapped firmly around your shoulder. Childe would act dismissive of whoever you were speaking to, making up some excuse about why he needs your attention more and whisking you away. He projects a lot into your conversations. Childe asks with a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes if you’re trying to make him jealous. “As much as I like you -- and trust me when I say I do -- you should be careful with that.”

There’s a myriad of ways the Fatui could make this person’s life a living hell. From the shackles of debt tightening, harassment, to even making them disappear entirely. Childe would actually find it interesting if the person has a Vision themselves. He views it as a challenge of sorts. Malice would be oozing out of him at the thought of proving his strength to you, that no one else could come close to the claim he has. To avoid any unwanted attention, Childe would wait to strike until the person is traveling alone, channeling his Delusion alongside his Vision. It’d be an awful sight.

When he talks to you next, you’ll notice he looks oddly content. If you’re brave enough to ask why this is, he’ll give some ominous answer, that leaves your body going cold. “Hm, I really need to know. Did you think that they were any match for me? It can vary from week to week. It’s usually pretty normal- about three times a week.

Preferred Music- OM! Brothers

Not that anyone asked me, but I was in the mood to write and I’ve gotten back into Obey Me! after a super-long hiatus.. so these are my thoughts on what the brothers listen to in terms of music. I’ve only finished S1, so forgive me if these don’t make sense in context of the later seasons T_T

Lucifer:

It’s established in canon that Lucifer loves listening to classical music and has an extensive record collection- the more cursed the better

I headcanon though that he also likes to listen to big band music, like the Glenn Miller Orchestra

I can imagine him putting one of his vintage Glenn Miller records on his grammy and asking his s/o to dance with him one night if he was feeling especially romantic. The song he’d initiate on would be Twilight Interlude, Moonlight Serenade, or Starlit Hour.

I also headcanon that Lucifer listens to crooners, like Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra

If MC can play an instrument, especially if it’s the piano, Lucifer might lurk in the hallway for a while if he hears them playing music by composers like Beethoven, Mozart, or Chopin. He doesn’t know how or why, but he thinks their works sound best whenever MC plays them

I think Lucifer’s guilty pleasure is 50′s/60′s decade music, but only listens to them when certain conditions are met: he’s in an exceptionally good mood, his privacy is guaranteed for at least an hour, and it’s just him in his bedroom. He feels that artists like The Beach Boys, Elvis, and The Beatles don’t fit with his polished, high-class image, hence the secrecy around listening to them

You’ll know he trusts you when he allows you into his space while one of these artists’ records is on the gramophone

Doesn’t change MC’s ringtone in his phone, because one: he’s an old man and hardly uses the thing for anything besides communication anyway, and two: he wants to be the only brother who wasn’t prompted by Mammon’s ringtone change

Probably changes their ringtone after a few weeks, when his brothers have forgotten all about it

Mammon:

The Black Crowes. Next-

It’s canon that Mammon likes R&B music

Mammon strikes me as a classic/90′s alternative rock kind of guy too, though. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, U2, Deep Purple, The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam- that kind of vibe

If he’s feeling something a little more hard, he’d probably dip into Nirvana, Van Halen, AC/DC, or another band along those lines

“Money” by Pink Floyd is DEFINITELY his ringtone

If he’s trying to really focus to come up with a scheme to make Grimm, or is just in the mood for something really chill, he might pull up a lofi hip hop playlist/station to listen to in the background

If he and MC happen to be chilling in his room, though, he’d probably play whatever they’re into- not because he likes them and wants to learn more about them or anything, noooooo sir, definitely doesn’t want to know their favorite artists so he can maybe take them to a concert one day either

Probably starts listening to MC’s favorite bands and genres too as their relationship develops

I headcanon that as soon as he finds out whatever MC’s favorite song is, he sets it as their ringtone in his phone so he can distinguish them from modeling agencies and his brothers

Leviathan:

It’s canon that Levi LOVES anime music, which like- I 110% subscribe to

I think he’d also really like video game music as well. Especially if it’s a game he loves and their soundtracks are *chef’s kiss*

If the Devildom has an equivalent to K-pop, I could see him being into that too. BTS, EXO, SUPER JUNIOR, Girl’s Generation, and SEVENTEEN all give me Levi vibes

Because he used to play so many different instruments, I also headcanon that sometimes he gets in the mood to listen to some of the music he used to play

He might get started on a classical music kick for a couple hours, then be satisfied for a week or two until the craving comes up again

Like Mammon, he might try listening to MC’s favorite music to get to know them better- but if he’s too averse to it, he’ll just go back to listening to his usual music

As their relationship develops, he might change MC’s ringtone in his phone to the theme of an anime they’ve both watched together and loved, or to the theme of his favorite anime- not to be outdone by Mammon, of course

Satan:

It’s canon that Satan also enjoys classical music, especially symphonies

I headcanon though that Satan might resent this similarity to Lucifer, so listens to classical music in secret- or abstains from it until he cracks and binges for a few hours

I could also see Satan listening to music very loudly in his room to piss Lucifer off if he’s in a particularly vindictive mood, especially if it’s hard rock or metal

Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, The Veer Union, Gojira, Beartooth, Steel Panther- and if he’s really mad at Lu, he’d pull out the stops and listen to some death metal

Lowkey kind of likes some of it, even though he started listening to it exclusively with the intent of making the eldest tear his hair out in frustration

For casual listening, though, I headcanon that he has soft indie playlists and stations that he’s favorited/subscribed to

I could also see him as the type to have a playlist built with all his favorite songs from his favorite Broadway plays (looking at you, Les Misérables and Cats)

When he catches wind that Mammon and Levi changed their ringtones for MC, he didn’t hop on the train to outdo them- he just thought it was a good idea. He changes it to a soft indie song that reminds him of MC in some way, whether the lyrics are explicitly about someone similar to them or the sound of the song gives them MC vibes

Asmodeus:

Asmo listens to healing music in canon

But I also imagine him listening to dance/EDM music, because it gets him pumped up for The Fall and reminds him of the good times he’s had there

I headcanon that Asmo listens to healing music when he’s pampering himself or doing spa sessions with MC, and dance/EDM when he’s getting primped up to go to the club

Asmo is DEFINITELY the type to put soft music on when he’s about to get it on with somebody to set the mood, but it’s not something he listens to on his own- he feels ambivalent about romantic music in general

With MC, though, if their relationship buds into something more than friendship- you can bet your ass that he custom makes the perfect playlist for spicy situations with them, and his opinion on romantic music changes into a more positive one

I also see him listening to Queens like Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé- really powerful women vocalists

Asmo might have an easy listening pop playlist/station subscribed on his app of choice, but probably has to be in the mood for it to put it on

Definitely changes MC’s ringtone to something cheeky at first, like “Sexual Healing”, but trades it for a romantic song that reminds him of them later as they get closer

Beelzebub:

The RAD newspaper reports that Beel likes the song in the “Hell’s Burger” commercial

But I headcanon that when the newspaper club asked him that question, he just didn’t know how to respond because he listens to so many different genres, so he blurted out the first thing on his mind (so of course it would be food-related)

Beel doesn’t strike me as the type to like one genre in particular to the exclusion of most others- he seems more like he’d have playlists of all different genres to switch between depending on the situation and his mood

He’d definitely have a workout playlist full of songs to hype him up, like “Eye of the Tiger”, “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Seven Nation Army”, “Thunder”, etc.

Probably has upwards of thirty playlists/stations he’s subscribed to because of his broad tastes, but the ones I see him frequently playing are pop, indie, alternative, and punk rock

Because he shares a room with Belphie, he’s grown accustomed to listening to chill, soft piano music at night when the both of them are first falling asleep- so much so, he has a hard time falling asleep without it, so he always brings earphones with him when traveling so he can still listen to it

MC’s ringtone in his phone is the “Hell’s Burger” commercial song- the only other contact that shares the ringtone is Belphie. Hearing his favorite song helps him distinguish his favorite people from everyone else calling his phone, even if hearing the song makes him hungry and drool a little bit before he picks up

Belphegor:

Belphie likes chill piano music in canon

Makes sense to me, since he’s sleeping 99.999999% of the time

But I headcanon that he also likes punk rock, like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, blink-182, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, Panic! At The Disco, Bring Me The Horizon, and more

He only listens to it if he has to stay awake for a long period of time- listening to piano music makes him sleepy, so that’s out of the question, even though he needs music to be able to focus

Belphie is another brother who will stick around if he hears MC playing the piano- he’s less covert about it than the eldest brother, though

He’ll straight up trudge into the music room, sit on the bench with them and lean his head against their shoulder as they play

Hope you weren’t planning on stopping anytime soon, MC

Belphie also seems like the type to have subscriptions to ASMR or soft storytelling podcasts/stations/playlists, for the times he finds he’s having a hard time falling asleep

Like Lucifer, is one of the last to hop on the ringtone train, and honestly didn’t really give a shit about it until he really thought about it. What if MC was in trouble and tried to call him while he was asleep? His normal ringtone wouldn’t wake him up in that scenario, which could end up being really bad

Changes it to something really loud and obnoxious at first, like “What Is Love” (the animal cover)

Eventually changes it to something more romantic as he and MC get closer in their relationship, like “Check Yes, Juliet”

ive always been confused about something though. as absolutely horrible katsuki's behaviour was in chapter 1, is the core of his words ever really disproved by the series?

his delivery is atrocious and vile but like he's not wrong. a strong quirk will give you a huge advantage (and of course it depends on the person, someone like kaminari has a very strong quirk but didn't start out dedicated in improving it so he was wasting his potential, while someone like mirio has a very high risk high reward quirk that he made op solely due to to his perseverance. quirks can be used in creative ways. but they do need to have some sort of potential. look at ojiro, whose quirk is basically just an extra limb. it's cool and all, but when people around him can move faster than cars and float people to space and cause the earth to shatter from their heartbeat, it's pretty clear it won't let him keep up all that well) going on potential alone. it's not like katsuki relied solely on talent either, considering he studies hard enough to be a top three student in the best high school in japan and had at least some prior experience with fighting, + very fine control of his quirk. katsuki's mentality of talent + hard work = victory, is by itself, a very grounded and realistic worldview. in katsuki's eyes, izuku not only lacked a talent (re:quirk) but he wasn't working hard either. he was basically living in delusion. he wasn't even doing any type of physical training at all, despite knowing UA had a practical exam (he wasn't even giving himself a chance to pass that one).

(this strikes me as strange because you'd think someone logical like izuku would realise that he needed to train his body alongside his mind if he wanted a chance. maybe it circles back to the fact that izuku didn't just care about saving people, he cared about saving people in one very specific all might like way, and if he wasn't gonna have that very specific way, there was no use in doing anything at all. and that circles back to one of the biggest flaws of hero society i.e. that you can only be a hero in one very specific all might like way and anything lesser is worthless)

Self-sacrifice is a part of being a hero, but self sacrifice without power to back it up is just recklessness. And while Izuku's other middle school classmates are laughing at him, Katsuki takes him and only him very seriously and actively discourages him (in the worst way possible damnit katsuki i want to beat your ass so bad) from doing something he sees as reckless and delusional.

what i'm trying to say here is that, while izuku's powerlessness and delusion never ever made getting bullied his fault nor made him deserving of any of it, the fact that he was powerless and delusional is just that, a fact. it's the truth.

and then he didn't just get a simple flashy quirk, he got the flashiest of flashy quirks. so what's the message we are sending here with that particular, that you can live your dreams only if you get lucky enough and through a chain of coincidences the fairy comes to bestow upon you the exact magical talent you needed? that the world is unfair but if you become one of the blessed ones you can make it?

izuku's underdog status was converted to chosen one very early on in the series, but i do have trouble understanding what the overall lesson of his arc and the show is supposed to be, aside from power is what you make it.

I sympathize with a lot of the sentiments you expressed, and I also do feel like the messages in Deku’s arc are pretty confusing.

I think overall the story seems to have this idea that ideals without power to back it up are not much, but power without ideals can spin out of control.

But at the same time, it also seems to suggest that an everyday person could have been a hero to someone like Tenko by simply reaching out with kindness, and that was the type of heroism that quirkless Izuku represented (but nobody, including himself didn’t hold in high enough regard, except All Might).

The unfairness idea I think mimics the world. Deku being born powerless compared to Bakugou was unfair. Deku getting a power the frogleaps over everyone and makes people like Ojirou seem completely useless in comparison also seems unfair. But at the end of the day, the unfairness derives from the system that measures heroes my case resolution rate, and thus devalues heroes who “only” manage to save one person vs thousands, which comes down to measuring human life as a commodity. I think the point in Eri’s and Tenko’s arcs is to show that each life in its own way is an immeasurable potential.

I think as long as the story concludes in a way that shows that the powerless, the students with weaker quirks, pedestrian heroes all have their valuable place, can all make an impact, it can still be satisfying.

But what feels disingenuous to me at this point is for the narrative to still use Deku as the ultimate representative of the “powerless”. Because he’s not. We left that stage behind in Chapter 2 and his journey feels more like a “be careful what you wish for” and how a rosy dream can turn into a very dark burden.

There have been many things I disliked about Deku’s arc lately - the multiple quirks, this last pivot to “he’s been the only possible choice ever because quirkless is the ultimate superpower”, etc. - because I feel like how the narrative tries to keep elevate him into some kind of ultimate savior messiah - which reinforces the first message about heroes being made from the meeting of ideals and power - while neglecting the second message about the importance and impact of everyday heroes.

Analysis tag game

Answer as few or many of these as you like. Enjoy! 1. How do you begin writing your analysis: do you start writing about the first thing that strikes you; or do you step back and look at the narrative structure first; or something else?

I usually start from a question I have about the narrative; my metas usually start with me wanting to learn something rather than me having something I want to prove. I always have to be interested in the subject! 2. What do you like to keep in mind while writing your analysis/meta?

Er... nuance and empathy. ;) It’s hard to balance that in some ways because like... in literary criticism you literally cannot be too blunt. You do not say “seems.” You do not say “likely.” You say “is.” You declare. That... does not always get received well in fandom, though :P So there’s a balance between sticking to an argument and acknowledging that not every statement applies to every situation in the world, or even to every interpretation of the work.

3. Do you try to keep your value judgments separate from your analysis?

Is value akin to like or to morality in this question?

For the former, I think that there is a line between “I don’t like this” and “this is objectively bad,” but either case is okay to make--as long as you have evidence to back it up. If you can explain why X twist doesn’t make sense with the previous parts of the work, it’s not just “I don’t like this.” Also, you can think things are objectively good and dislike them, or think they are objectively bad and love them anyways (2ha’s last arc for me). You can even be a hypocrite (I disliked the end of TG and of 2ha for the same exact reason--protagonist halo--yet still enjoyed 2ha and ended up with a much harsher opinion of TGre for no other reason beyond just personal taste + life circumstances + expectations etc.) There’s a lot of shades of gray (nuance!) in there as well.

For the latter... I know based on spoilers, for example, that Qiang Jin Jiu’s ending might be objectively well done, but it doesn’t necessarily seem to jive with my particular values. We’ll see how it’s executed/framed. But that doesn’t inherently affect my view of the story’s quality.

4. Do you prefer analyzing characters, or arcs, or both?

Both, but characters are the main substance of a story for me. I have been more nerdily interested in structure lately though. Yes! When it’s constructive and when there’s discussion backed up with evidence (whether in support or disagreement). I’ve learned a lot from other meta writers, and made some great friends! Literary analysis is always a discussion (even historically speaking!) so it’s 100% a valuable part of the experience.

The problem, of course, is that people can be rude and social media encourages less-than-stellar engagement and out-of-context understandings, which means it’s often just safer to be like “I’m not discussing this.” :/ 6. Do you consciously decide which media you want to write analysis on or does it naturally come to you?

Kind of goes back to question 1 for me; if I like a work and have questions about it, I’ll often write about it. 7. Do you prefer writing long or short metas? Which ones do you prefer to read?

Long for both, I guess, but honestly it depends on the topic and what it requires! Some short blurbs are great, and concise. I am in general not concise. 8. Which are your favourite analysis/criticism/meta blogs?

Hmmmm.

Qiang Jin Jiu--it’s a novel fans are really sleeping on (at the same time, that ,means there is no Shen Zechuan discourse which is inevitable if it gets popular, so I get to love my stabby son in peace). It’s also quite rich in themes.

RWBY. There actually is a fair amount of content for RWBY, but less analysis, which I’d love to see more of! I think the story is really well done so far (not perfect, but good) yet a lot of the hot takes about RWBY are... they kinda misrepresent the show, which is a shame.

Scum Villain. It often gets overshadowed by MXTX’s other works and while it definitely does have more obvious flaws (it’s a first novel and that’s clear), it’s no less thematically rich than MDZS or TGCF, and also just as clever. I also think its being a different genre plays a role in it being overlooked; a lot of critiques I see are exactly the point (like Binghe’s over-the-top behavior being designed to make you question tropes, the cringe sex scene is cringe for a reason, etc)..

10. According to you, what are some prerequisites for good quality analysis?

Simply put, you’ve gotta be deferential to evidence. Support your claims, and also answer the “so what” question (ie why does x point you’re making matter?) Also, be willing to change your mind based on evidence, and also stick to the work. Which doesn’t mean you can’t empathize or theorize about why x people like y or how culture/authors impact work/the perceptions of a work, but that you should do so with self-awareness and humility. Fiction and reality have a nuanced relationship.

Oh, and don’t be afraid to be wrong or to change your mind. I’m wrong all the damn time. You learn through doing, right or wrong!

Yes, technically this isn’t NSFW per se, but it gets into topics racy enough that I’m posting it here. And c’mon, who doesn’t enjoy delving into the twisted maze that is AFO? He’s neck-and-neck with All Might as the scariest yandere in this series anyway, but that’s another can of worms.

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

He’s very generous with the affection, but only if you’ve kept in his good graces. He’s not picky about doling out punishments if you act out. He keeps it fairly innocent unless the mood strikes, and even then he doesn’t care who’s in the room when he decides to seduce you.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

He’s the single most dangerous villain in the history of Quirks and has no hesitation to take what he wants when he wants. I feel like that should answer itself fairly well.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

He’s gentle with you, but firm. His first priority is to make you dependent on him, and comforting you even as you demand answers. Depending on how violent/aggressive you get, however, he’s not above leaving you alone by yourself in a locked room for a while to stamp out that temper. As soon as you start acting nice, he treats you kindly again.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

Not in the classic physical sense. He’s manipulative, yes, but he’s not going to force you into anything -- at least, not yet. He wants your will to bend and break before he truly starts doing things with you that you might otherwise say no to. Patience is key - and lucky for him, he’s got a lot.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

He tells you very little about himself other than the basics you already know: all-powerful villain who can take and give any Quirk he gets his hands on. He might liken you to his little brother once or twice, and perhaps if in a good enough mood he’ll tell you stories of when they were both young, but otherwise he’s a mystery to you.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Amused. There’s literally nothing you can do to him that hurts, and for a while he’s content to let you think you’re gaining back control, only to crush that determination at the most heated moment. If you continue to act out, however, he will start to lose his patience and will treat you harsher and harsher, outright abandoning you in a locked room with food and water delivered once a day until he feels you’ve learnt your lesson.

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

It doesn’t matter if it is or isn’t; chances are, he’s already won. He does enjoy watching you go about, thinking you’re being sneaky when he’s already figured out your entire plan to escape. At the very last moment when you think you’re going to get out, he enjoys seeing the hope fade from your face as you realize you’ve failed. It gives him a lot of pleasure breaking you.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

Being locked in a cell, alone, with nobody to talk to until he arrives to bring you food. He only wants to isolate you like that when you’re being stubborn; otherwise, you’re locked in your shared bedroom.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

First and foremost, he wants to rule his new empire with you at his side as his loving spouse. Your Quirk is deemed helpful enough that, should you be able to, he would like a few children sired with you to see what kind of Quirks they would get (or not, in which case he’d be delighted to share one of his with them and train them to use it).

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

He’s not exactly jealous, but rather paranoid. His way of coping with that is to keep you locked away. You’re his, not anyone else’s, and he wants you to accept that.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

He’s very affectionate. Loves holding you in his lap as he caresses your hair, maybe a kiss or two on your forehead. He’s very charming, too; likes to joke around with you and is quite playful when you’re in his good graces.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

He met you while you were briefly in Kamino Ward and afterwards desired to have you for himself. He found out where you lived and worked and started sending anonymous gifts (along with a cell number) in the guise of a ‘secret admirer’ until you agreed to meet him over text. When you did meet, you were a bit intimidated by his size, but after a few successful dates you were already falling head over heels.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Absolutely. Most of the time, he acts charming and enigmatic, but when you piss him off, everyone knows it. The sheer weight of his aura is enough to even make All Might shake in his boots, and for good reason. He prefers not to let his charismatic mask slip, though. It’s much easier to manipulate others when they believe you to be weaker than you are and think they have the upper hand at all times.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

Depends on what you did. If he thinks you’re just being bratty, he may spank you, chiding you the whole time. If you piss him off? Total isolation. 24/7, 365-366 days a year. At least, until he believes you’ve learnt a lesson. You’re locked in a cell with only a cot, toilet, and shower, and he himself delivers food to you once a day as your only form of human communication. Cameras are trained on you at all hours that only he can access. He doesn’t fuck around.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

At first, he’s quite generous. He allows monitored correspondence between you and your family. He allows you to go places only with either him or Kurogiri present at all times. He allows you near sharp objects only with supervision (like when you cook dinner together). But if you piss him off, he takes everything away, including privacy. Get sick? Need an exam? He gets Garaki to check you out, and he watches the whole time.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

He can be exceedingly patient. His thinking is that you’re just a petulant child who needs to learn their place, and if he has to dole out a few punishments along the way he will. He just wants you to realize that he won’t let anything happen to you and that he just wants the best for you (that issue is subjective).

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

You know how he (presumably) reacted to his beloved little brother dying? That. Again. And this time, he would be less lenient on those he deemed responsible. He rules with an iron grip.

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

Doesn’t feel guilty at all, and absolutely won’t let you go. It’s partially his Quirk to blame; when he sees something (or someone) he desires, he just has to have it/them. He considers you to be totally his, and he won’t stand for anything else taking you away.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

As stated above, it’s partially his Quirk, partially due to being born in a turbulent time of history. Quirks were still becoming more common at the time, and he was already protective of his brother due to his perceived Quirklessness and because he was using his Quirk for good. He made too many enemies that wanted to hurt those close to him, and due to his paranoia (as well as his possessive nature), force of habit dictates that he isolate those he deems his.

Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

Condescending pity. He dealt with that kind of behavior once, with his younger brother, and it nearly broke him then trying to get him to see how much he loved him. Now he’s older and more patient, and all he can do is try and comfort you by petting your hair and telling you that it has to be this way, he just wants the best for you, why can’t you just understand?

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

When he does lose it, he doesn’t ‘go mad’ in the classic sense -- rather, his resolve hardens and he retains his temper. His is more of a tranquil fury - it’s not immediately obvious unless he chooses to show you. He wouldn’t physically hurt you either -- well, not enough to wound you. He would consider spanking, but he wouldn’t break your legs.

Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

Oh, honey. You really think he won’t see what you’re doing and shut it down when you think you’ve gotten free? He’s All For One. There’s not a weakness he hasn’t already thought through.

Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?

Aside from light things like spanks, no. Mentally, though? He’s a manipulative, gaslighting monster. He will not hesitate to turn you against everyone you’ve ever loved if it meant you were more dependent on him alone.

Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?

He goes the traditional gentleman route: wooing you slowly enough that you don’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late. He reveres your body in all of its beauty when you get intimate, but he rather wants you to worship him devotedly.

Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

If anything were to make him snap, it would be you (against all odds) escaping his grip. Maybe one of his underlings somehow slipped you out under his nose. Maybe another decided to just dump you somewhere. Either way, he’s going full lockdown mode and will not stop until he finds you. And believe me, he will find you.

Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?

That’s probably the first thing he does if you’re stubborn/defiant enough. If you prove to be totally into it and are willing to be totally dependent on him, congrats! You get to escape with your will mostly unharmed!
