“Nice try but I’m not adulting today”: the Millennials of Sk8

It’s really delightful to me that the grownups in Sk8 are recognizably millennials and I was really pleased by the way the show employs the visual hallmarks of my teen years to establish the flashbacks to the youth of the last generation. Feels like Officially becoming a Media Adult

Like obviously I am no longer the shonen target demo / main character being well out of my teens and that is not new, but I’ve been in a weird gap because Media Grownups have still seemingly been gen-Xers, aesthetically and values-wise (retro = the 80s, for seemingly forever), and that’s not me. But these Manic-Panic-haired Hot-Topic-shopping X-Games-watching sk8er bois absolutely are:

Kaoru was edgier in his youth than I would’ve dared in my own but I sure did have those bangs. Look at his eyeliner you could cut glass with those wings!!! He’s serving Avril Lavigne and I just know he’s got Death Cab or his local equivalent playing in his (wired, on-ear) headphones. This is ostensibly a school uniform but I wanted identical trendy skinny plaid pants so bad

Note the wallet chain and the aggressive side part which TikTok would have me believe is no longer cool?? This nice young man will go get a Godsmack shoulder tattoo at chef school and it will become part of his personal brand when he moves back to his hometown and decides to maintain a quirky high school hobby at great personal injury risk and what must be a disastrous sleep schedule situation. He’s somehow the best-adjusted man in all of shonen

And I know there’s not even a full generation between the two groups of main characters (as the show itself constantly jokes by way of Shadow’s objections to being called an old man) but they are separated by life-phase-dependent narrative trajectories: Reki and Langa and Miya are in coming of age (cough first love) stories, Kaoru is in a healing from old wounds story, Kojiro is a mentor figure (does he have character development or just a rockin bod?? Who’s to say) and Shadow is also mentor/supporter/team-mom. (Ainosuke is an important exception which I will discuss in a separate post; he’s in some ways belatedly coming of age.)

So the older group feels narratively/functionally like The Grownups but they are aesthetically My Peers. It’s kind of wild! “Feel old yet?” Yeah I do, finally, thanks! Congrats on graduating to anime adulthood my fellow millennials!

I’m sure there’s tons of other media where my generation is represented this way but this is the first one I’ve really noticed, maybe because it touches on a specific subculture that evokes my experience of youth, or maybe I don’t watch that many things set in the present anyway. Who knows. I think my particular delight in this experience also has to do with how Sk8 treats coolness and how the adults (at least The Founders) still get to have it. Maybe also the fact that the show’s characters get to be generationally differentiated but not at odds for that feels fresh to me; there are clearly marked aesthetic/narrative differences but they’re not hinging the conflict on the grownups being out of touch or the kids being immature. That feels a little bit utopian, actually, and opposed to a particular strain of discourse that paints Gen Z/The Youth as incomprehensible to the “olds” and separate from millennials, who should implicitly start to identify instead with more traditional values and attitudes, i.e. those of our parents. In fact I would argue that Sk8 actually models that identification with outdated parental values via Ainosuke and his family, and frames it as sad and toxic and villain-making, but we see a healthier alternative in the core squad, where Reki jokes about Shadow being an old man, and Joe and Cherry bemoan the kids joining vacation, but it’s lighthearted and we get to have fun joking about age/generational differences without it creating conflict! Found family/intergenerational dynamics without manufactured parent-child tension, except for fun at the beach! Neat! (Also the actual parent-child dynamics of Langa and his mom are pretty great)

So it’s cool to see my specific peer group’s aging represented without any suggestion that it should necessarily mean generational conflict or value-stagnation, or even uncoolness or the trope of inevitable adult boredom and the loss of youthful freedom and joy. We can have our own millennial culture AND separate adult narratives/problems AND solidarity with younger people AND empowered fully-realized maturing selves with fun hobbies! I can see myself in the Media Adults in a piece of media that’s got a pretty optimistic view of what adulthood means and I think that’s neat.

I was thinking of the sk8 x bsd thing (again) earlier, imagine kouyou and Chuuya coming to visit cherry, and everyone besides joe is like “who are these people??” And it’s like, this gorgeous badass women with a sword and a demon and her son(brother?) who can manipulate fucking gravity. How would they even react to that?

oh I am SO glad you asked bc I have Thoughts - I'm assuming this is going to take place circa episode 5 once the Sk8 fam has kinda consolidated:

Shadow: First things first, he sees Kouyou's red eyeliner and immediately decides he wants it for his own. He thinks he should be an honorary member of the family because he has orange hair and he owns up to his aesthetic to Kouyou and Chuuya levels. At first he's terrified of Golden Demon (GD) to the point that he faints but once he revives they bond over flowers. GD joins the Shadow defense squad bc she thinks he's a dumb himbo but he would take good care of and adore Kyouka when he eventually meets her.

Miya: Is originally afraid of Kouyou and on first sight thinks Chuuya is thee coolest person ever. Highkey hid behind Joe when Golden Demon appeared (which wasn't the best choice because GD has it out for her brother-in-law). The closer GD got, Miya's survival instincts kicked in and he went into Miyao (Meow) mode (shown below). GD, Kouyou, and Chuuya took one look at him and the adoption papers were signed within 0.1 sec. He follows Chuuya around like a baby duck and they talk, and that's when Chuuya finds out about Adam. In fact, everyone finds out bc Chuuya gets so angry a crater is blown into poor Joe's restaurant's floor. He immediately flies out the door, only to return about 20 minutes later with some suspicious red stains on his gloves and a simple "oh I was taking out the trash". Kouyou pats them both on the head and resolves to pay her own visit later on.

Reki: Our resident disaster bi is overwhelmed and intimidated by Kouyou's ethereal presence to the point that he freezes. However, this is overriden by geek-mode the moment he catches sight of Kouyou's sword. Eyes shining, he looks up to her and interrogates her for 3 whole hours about various sharp objects and absolutely monopolizes her time. Kouyou is reminded of a younger-Chuuya who once did the same thing. GD hovers around them watchfully, occasionally taking out her own sword to show Reki. Chuuya shows him his knife-juggling with gravity manipulation trick and he's delighted. Another set of adoption papers are signed.

Langa: Once you experience Adam's presence, it's a little hard to be shocked by things. As such, Langa doesn't react too strongly to Kouyou's and Chuuya's presence. His single braincell does take a moment to question why Chuuya can control gravity and where GD is coming from, but the thought eventually passes, he shrugs, and moves on. He sticks next to Reki at first, listening to the conversations around and laughing at GD chasing Joe in the background. This no-thoughts-head-empty state disappears when he hears Chuuya talking to Miya about how he knows French. The Canadian part of him emerges, excited to speak in another familiar language with someone who can understand him. One "bonjour" later, another set of adoption papers is signed.

Later on...

Chuuya buys the trio chokers so they can match him: Reki gets a set of colorful thick ones, Miya gets a cat shaped one, and Langa gets one black and one white one.

Kouyou teaches Reki about tea ceremonies. She finds the boy has remarkably steady and dependable hands, and he makes very good tea.

Chuuya takes the trio out for sk8 "practice" which often consists of him using gravity manipulation to help them learn tricks or get more air. Kouyou and Cherry accompany them, but they simply watch elegantly from beneath a red umbrella.

Kouyou becomes a regular patron of Shadow's flower shop. GD comes out when the manager isn't looking. The demon has wonderful taste in blossoms.

The Port Mafia is given strict instructions to protect the trio from Adam. If he deigns to get within 500 meters of any of them, he would be made to disappear. Kouyou delivers the news to him herself, along with a haircut courtesy of GD.

Chuuya thinks skating feels similar to flying-by-gravity-manipulation, so he takes up the sport seriously too (without help from his ability ofc). Dazai tries to get his S-name to be Slug, but it doesn't catch on.

Chuuya can bake and he and Joe have similar taste in wines so they actually get along well (except for when Cherry is in the room and all bets are off bc Chuuya is a loyal brother/son). He learns how to make many healthy desserts to assuage Miya's sweet tooth.

I have so many more thoughts but this is already long, so I'll add more to another post later!! Thanks for the ask bff <3

Sk8 Headcanons: Fem Edition!

If the characters were female/fem, what they'd wear and how their appearance would appear more fem! I won't really change their names but I will be using She/Her pronouns for the characters for the sake of the post. I will put in images to better express what outfits they'd wear.

Joe: Her hair would be the same length, cut more into a wolf cut(?) and wears light make-up. She would still show off a lot of skin, wearing sleeveless shirts, crop tops, showing off her muscles. Her clothing style would be about the same, adding a few more accessories and still often picks up girls.

Cherry: Her hair would actually be shorter, maybe up to her shoulders and in a small ponytail, still lazily resting on her shoulder. She'd wear pretty much the same clothing she already wears except very natural light make-up and a little hair clip to keep her hair out of her face when writing/drawing.

Shadow: She would have longer hair, keeping her mow-hawk. She'd wear it in a ponytail when at work and let it all down during 'S'. Her outfits wouldn't necessarily change at all.

Adam: She'd have the same length of hair, worn in the same style as she does during the day and 'S'. She'd wear the same blue suit but with a long figure-fitting skirt with black slightly platformed heels. She'd wear little, stud heart ear-rings during the day and big fiery heart ear rings and passionate red lip-stick during 'S'.

Tadashi: Her hair would be way longer, like down to the middle of her back but most of the time placed in a bun, but when it's down it always look like the ends were recently cut. She wouldn't wear any make-up or accessories and she'd still wear the same suit.

Reki: She'd usually wear pants but she sometimes likes wearing skirts with long shorts or tights when skating at 'S'. She wears little gear or wrench earrings and her hair is just slightly longer and still messily put around her headband. She'd still wear her hoodies a lot and has a crop top version that she wears black high waisted pants with and a white/black undershirt for 'S'.

Langa: Hair length would be the same, fashion wouldn't really change much unless Reki dresses her up a little; which would be a long, frilly dress/skirt, cute cropped jean-jacket and snowflake earrings. She doesn't really like to dress either masculine or feminine but she does enjoy make-up, so she puts on eyeliner and light eyeshadow every morning.

Miya: She wears basically the exact same thing but sometimes varies stuff out with a skirt+pants and a headband with a little gaming controller on the left of it as a decoration. Her hair would be a little shorter than it canonically is and her bangs are sometimes swifted to the left from the headband.

Intre timp te-ai vopsit bruneta si iti sta super bine, te prinde maxim, lumea spune ca esti Alba-ca-zapada. Ai invatat sa te machiezi si toata lumea iti complimenteaza machiajul. Stii sa iti faci eyeliner si sa te dai cu ruj. Stii sa iti faci poze care sa te avantajeze. Acum te imbraci cum vrei tu. Acum te imbraci in culori!! rareori mai porti doar outfituri full black.

Te-ai angajat si iti merge bine din punctul asta de vedere. N-o sa ramanem aici pentru ca suntem mai bune de atat, dar deocamdata e bine.

Inca nu stim sigur ce vrem sa facem pe viitor. N-avem o cariera stabilita si n-avem planuri sigure. E ok, lumea crede ca sunt un copil razgaiat care crede ca tot ce zboara se mananca si bla bla. Tata e la fel. Nu mai exista violenta fizica, dar in rest totul este acolo. Nu s-a schimbat nimic.

De mama te-ai apropiat mult. Acum sunteti cele mai bune prietene si fumati impreuna cafeluta de dimineata, barfiti, plangeti si radeti impreuna.

Ai un cel mai bun prieten. Nu mai tii legatura cu nimeni de atunci. El e singurul om care a ramas. Nu stiu daca te-ai fi asteptat sau nu la asta.

Ai trecut prin multe despartiri, batai de joc, partide reusite sau nereusite de sex, nopti nedormite, nopti de băută in club, miștouri, prietenii, aventuri.

Dar cumva..am reusit sa trecem prin toate. Inca ma obisnuiesc sa vorbesc cu tine, inca ma obisnuiesc sa te iau in seama atunci cand imi dai semnale ca ceva nu e okay. Sau atunci cand te doare ceva.

I just want a fic where Langa and Reki don't see each other for like two days because some family members are visiting the Kyan household or something, and they decide to meet up again with the rest of the group at S once Reki is available again. And when Reki appears Miya is the first one to see him and thinks 'oh this is gonna murder Langa's gay ass isn't it?' Because Reki's visiting cousin was a make over artist or something and she played a Dress the Reki game and sent him off into the world with a brand new undercut (which he somehow rocks despite refusing to leave his head band behind), a still healing lip ring, blue nail polish and a crop top.

And when Miya and Reki join the rest of the group Langa is competing against Joe or something and he sees Reki from the corner of his eye and just. Skates into a wall. Full sped, maybe breaking his nose in the process. Thinks he's fainted and having a fever dream right until Worried Nurse Reki goes to see if he's got any booboos and then realizes this must be real world because not even in his wildest dreams would he be able to imagine Reki like this. Miya is recording everything in the background. Shadow laughs his ass off, refuses to explain to Reki how Langa's sudden clumsiness is fun. Cherry pretends he doesn't know them. Joe is the only sympathetic one, because he remembers eyeliner-lip piercing cherry from his youth and he feels Langa's gay panic in a personal level.

Sk8 headcanons because i can

Reki has definitely stolen eyeliner from Shadow before and Shadow thought he lost it

After watching Miya play with his switch Joe wants to try it and gets absolutely addicted but instead of buying one (because he's canonically broke) he always "borrows" Miya's

Langa most definitely is a secret Swiftie

Cherry absolutely sucks at Mario Cart, no matter how clever that man is, no matter how many Carla's he invents, when Miya forces him to play, he crashes into the wall first thing

Reki hates nothing more than tying shoelaces so he either wears shoes without laces or never ties them properly and walks around with untied shoes

Langa on the other hand always, always, always, ties his shoes twice and after a while he gets so bothered by Reki and his untied laces that he ties them for him

Joe is a sucker for romance movies and secretly ugly cries every single time he watches one

For every restaurant Miya goes to he has 1 specific go to order that he never changes so he always eats the same things

Shadow has a Polaroid of Cherry, Joe, Reki, Langa and Miya that he took when they went to hot springs in his phone case. None of the others know it's there

Sk8 headcannons because brainrot

- Langa doesn't know how to swim except the doggy paddle

- Reki wanted a dog as s kid so badly that he made an entire presentation about it for his parents and got his sister involved, too. They had to tell him no, because they couldn't afford it and because dogs require a lot of attention. Reki wouldn't speak to his mother for two days.

- Reki has definitely tried to skateboard in high heels before and he definitely failed

- Miya's YouTube recommended page consists solely of playthroughs and theories for his favorite RPGs

- Kojiro was a pokemon kid

- Langa had braces in middle school but hardly anyone noticed because of how quiet he was. His mouth was almost always closed, and he smiled with his mouth closed for photos, so there is no photo documentation that he ever even had braces

- Langa doesn't take a lot of photos, not at all. If he does, it's of nature or whatever. He has, like, one photo of him and Reki in his phone.

- Reki takes more videos than photos. If vine was around when he was a teen, he definitely would've made a viral video

- Kaoru got the first piercing because Kojiro dared him to, thinking he wouldn't actually do it. After that he just kept getting them because he thought they looked cool. (Though he definitely did that first piercing himself and it got infected. He went to tattoo parlors after that)

- the only person in the past five years who has seen Kaoru in anything but a yukata (or similar traditional clothing) is Kojiro. Apparently Kaoru wears shorts in his own home occasionally.

- Reki has long eyelashes

- Reki always has to remind Langa to wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Langa did NOT inherit any genes from his mother that would allow him to tan, and thus was constantly either a) white as a sheet or b) red as a tomato

- as soon as Koyomi learned what "gay" was, she looked at Reki and Langa and decided that they were secretly dating (they were not, but she wasn't that far off, it was just mutal pining!)

- Reki knows that airpods are useful and convenient and he can definitely afford them but refuses to ever buy them

- Reki likes grape flavored popsicles and Langa and Miya agree that this is a crime against humanity

- Miya loves sour candy and once made Reki and Langa eat seven warheads at once with him. He was majorly unaffected, but the other two actually physically damaged their tastebuds

- Miya eats lemons in restaurants (including Sia La Luce, and it drives Kojiro crazy)

- Miya doesn't like lemonade, though. It's too sugary.

- Before "S", Hiromi's persona of Shadow lived online as an internet troll

- Langa gets weirdly invested in internet drama even though he doesn't know the first thing about the people they're about (he could tell you the whole timeline of the Tati and James Charles drama tho)

- Reki's English writing is just as bad as Langa's Kanji, and they try to help each other with it but get a little frustrated

- While Miya has great grades in school, it's not because it comes easily to him (like skating). He actually works really hard, and he struggles the most with reading and writing. His favorite class is art.

- Kojiro is a truth serum drunk

- Reki really likes sunflowers, and just flowers in general. He'd probably never say it out loud to anyone but Hiromi or maybe Langa, but he just thinks they're pretty and appreciates their beauty.

- Langa is not a picky eater, but he will, under NO circumstances, eat anything with mustard on it.

- Kojiro taught himself how to braid hair in middle school using Kaoru's hair (he very reluctantly let Kojiro do this)

- Langa used to have a lisp as a child, but he eventually grew out of it

- Reki has glasses with a fairly weak prescription that he just doesn't use (they're supposed to be "just for school" but he really cannot be bothered. plus, he heard that if you don't wear glasses when you need them that your vision won't worsen and might even improve)

- Kojiro not only speaks fluent Italian, but also is proficient in French and even speaks English well enough to get his point across

- Reki loved reading American comic books as a kid. It was just too bad that he had no clue what the dialogue was. He'd try to come up with the dialogue himself, though, and his mom would always find him muttering to himself in various voices when reading

- Reki's headband was a gift from Oka

- Almost anyone in Reki's school could call him their friend, but he never really hung out with anyone (but his other friend who used to skate) until Langa came along

- Langa is a good dancer, Reki... is not (but he has fun!)

- Kaoru can break dance, but no one but Kojiro knows this (for now)

- Miya never has a huge growth spurt like everyone expects him to, he remains below average in height

- Reki doesn't watch a lot of shows, but he LOVES Avatar: the Last Airbender (I assume that show has been translated into Japanese??)

- Langa straightened Reki's hair once with his mother's iron. He burned both his ears multiple times

- Miya actually has a convoluted haircare routine

- Kojiro got Kaoru into the habit of always carrying around lip balm with him (whenever Kaoru would ask to borrow his, he would make an indirect kissing joke. eventually Kaoru just got his own)

- Reki definitely had a crush on the friend that taught him to skate and just did not realize it at the time because he thought he only liked girls

- Reki sleeps under his sheets and blanket all year round

- Langa had terrible acne in his early teen years and he was an early bloomer

- Reki had a tooth gap before he got braces

- Miya wears Invisalign, Reki and Langa insist that he’ll never know the torture that was having braces and remark how “kids these days” have it so easy

Change Is Good - MatchaBlossom Quick Write

When you're around someone for so long, you start to see the different phases they go through as they're developing. Between Kaoru and Kojiro, Kaoru had changed the absolutely most throughout their development. At first, he was a whiny and shy little kid who hid behind his mother's legs on the first day of school; Kojiro was rambunctious and loud, always bothering him. Then he was their middle school's smart ass, who just so happened to be the best calligraphist in the art club; somehow his best friend was Kojiro, the boy who joined almost every sports club and hated staying still but was the art clubs model on more than one occasion. Then, in high school he was a bit of a delinquent and got into way too many fights for someone his size while Kojiro was the lovestruck idiot following behind him.

On top of phases, you see every face someone makes in their life. Kojiro had seen every one of Kaoru's, which broke his heart. He'd seen him happy, he'd seen him excited, he'd seen him disgusted, angry, fine, ecstatic, and the worst one was heartbroken. He'd seen the tears that willed themselves to come out, and he'd heard the sobs that left his voice coarse and shrill by the time he was done.

By the time they were adults, and Kojiro thought he had seen it all, it seemed like he wasn't even close. For years, Kaoru had been cold and reclusive to everyone except Kojiro and Carla. He was only kind to his clients because he had to be, but at the end of the day he was exhausted and couldn't help but fall into Kojiro's arms.

This all changed, of course, when the two of them met Reki and Langa and Miya. Kaoru never liked school aged children, he was bullied enough in his life that he didn't want to deal with them again. Though, something was very different with the group of kids they'd found themselves with. At first, Kaoru was very reluctant to take their company as it was.

The first night he'd met them he came home annoyed, with Kojiro. He huffed as he reached behind his back to unzip his shirt after pulling off the over shirt and gloves but couldn't reach.

Kojiro comes up from behind, looking at him in the mirror before squeezing his shoulders. "You want some help?"

"Mm.." he sighs, relaxing a bit before pulling his hair from the ponytail.

"Tonight, you looked scared."

"What?"

"I saw the look on your face when Adam came out." he slides the zipper down, "You're scared, aren't you?"

Kaoru clenches his jaw, "Not as scared as you are. Your hands are shaking."

"I don't want that kid goin' through what we did."

"They won't."

"How do you know, smart ass?"

"Because they'll have us."

"You intend to help them?"

Kaoru wipes the eyeliner off of his eyes and turns to Kojiro, who takes over the job, "Neither one of us need to let Adam hurt more people, right?"

He smiles, gently wiping the makeup off before kissing his nose. He hadn't seen Kaoru so worried in ages, and it only seemed to grow. Overtime he seemed to gravitate towards Miya and Langa more than Reki, granted Reki had Kojiro to gravitate towards. Kojiro could see the trio slowly but surely grow more comfortable with one another, to the point where he'd see Kaoru actively questioning it himself.

It was smaller gestures at first, like looking around for the two of them or remembering their favorite dishes. Then it grew to more physical affections, no longer growing uncomfortable when they were around and allowing them to hang on him.

Kojiro was standing with Kaoru in the crowds, watching a beef while they waited for the kids and Miya came sprinting down the line. Kojiro, of course, was the first to notice him too late as he leapt into Kaoru's arms and clung to him for dear life.

Kaoru furrows his brows, "Miya?"

He's silent, and staring at the ground in an almost terrorized state. Kojiro sees the tears in his eyes and he opens his mouth to speak, and sighs softly, looking down at the ground while he let Kaoru take care of it.

"Miya?" he puffs out again, putting his chin over his shoulder before looking at Kojiro. "Wait here for the others?"

"Course, babe." Kojiro smiles, watching them walk off. He liked seeing Kaoru care for Miya without much of a reason, he didn't even seem annoyed he just wanted to help from the bottom of his heart. This was a version of Kaoru he had yet to see, and he was more happy than anything to have that privilege.

Kaoru disappears to one of the quieter areas, Miya's grip tightening on his clothes as they kept walking. He didn't say much until they were in the quiet, sighing softly. "You're okay.." he whispers, leaning against the rocks. "What happened?"

"Nothing.."

"Alright, you don't wish to talk about it thats fine." he sighs, "Could you at least tell me why hugging me makes whatever happened better?"

"No..."

"That's alright." he sighs, adjusting his own arms to hug the small boy back. "I can stand here as long as you like."

"Until I stop crying?" he sniffles, "I don't wanna let everyone see me when I'm crying.. I'm already youngest, they'll just say I'm being a baby and sensitive."

Kaoru feels a sense of familiarity in those words and his tense shoulders relax. "Of course." he breathes out, closing his eyes and waiting their time out. Miya didn't say much else, he just clung to Kaoru in the silence and enjoyed the comfort he'd offered by just letting him hold on tight.

Eventually, the two walked back over and Miya went to Reki and Langa as he normally would while Kaoru stood beside Kojiro. He looks down to him, a smile to his face as his hand found a home on his waist. This new side of Kaoru was never anticipated, but it easily became his favorite in the blink of an eye.

Plays the ukulele! He wanted to play guitar because he saw someone serenading their partner with it at school! He borrowed Masumi's guitar but bar chords suck and his hands are kinda small, so he settled for the uke!
