Disclaimer: I haven't used or tested all of them. All resources have different strengths, e.g. Drops being designed for vocabulary. They often aren't full alternatives for Duolingo or formal classes. you first met kerstin when england played against the netherlands in a friendly almost two years ago, the game had ended in a glorious 5-1 win for your side and the dutch were left in despair at such a horrible defeat being handed to them; but a certain dutchie planned to leave the stadium with more than a loss. she'd requested a shirt swap for the masterclass you'd put up against her in midfield, smiling gleefully when you accepted immediately and made small talk to keep the conversation going. she just couldn't help herself, so when you'd laughed at another one of her jokes and gently placed your hand on her arm for the final time she asked for your number.

the next day she'd taken you out for coffee and a small walk with your hands absentmindedly laced together like you'd been dating years at that point. you realised kerstin was too shy to make a move in fear of making you uncomfortable so decided to take matters into your own hands (literally) and smiled to yourself when she let out an audible gasp, the midfielder then wrapping said arm around your shoulders to pull you closer with your forearm crossed over your chest. the pair of you didn't want that to be the end of your date and decided to plan another one, which led to kerstin kissing you outside your apartment door when she walked you all the way home and asking you to be her girlfriend a couple dates later.

after learning of her impending move to manchester within the first date you insisted on giving her a tour around the city, knowing you'll be seeing her a lot more often now that you were dating and really liked her. a month after making it official, kerstin announced her move to city and bid farewell to her previous club with a massive smile on her face; part of the reason being all the new opportunities city would provide her with, part of the reason being all the time she could spend with her girlfriend.

at this point in time your city teammates had caught onto you dating someone, still not having signed your girlfriend yet meant they couldn't even fathom to think you'd go for a dutchie. the girls speculated and you denied each guess, pushed away wandering hands when snatching at your phone to see who you were texting and remained silent on the matter of how you'd met, knowing for a fact the girls you played with for england would be able to narrow down you were dating a dutchie judging by the dates of recent international friendlies.

kerstin and yourself acted like friends in public and had continued to do so for the past year and nine months, opting to keep your relationship more of a private-leaning-secret matter for the sake of yourselves. you wanted to tell the girls ages ago but the moment just never came and with time you gave up on trying, rather letting them continue to think you were just friends that spent time together outside of football sometimes for the sake of team bonding and midfield chemistry.

none of them had managed to catch onto the looks you gave each other in training or sneaky touches when trying to get past in a group huddle, so you must have been doing a good job at hiding your relationship for now. there were obviously speculations online but it never got further than an odd rumour that no one paid attention to and luckily for you, your teammates had given up on trying to figure out who your girlfriend was. they claimed your recent instagram posts were looking like a soft launch but you quickly shut them down- why would you suddenly soft launch a relationship after being with her for nearly two years? the privacy was the main reason you'd managed to stay together so long and you both intended on keeping it that way.

current day, you just played against tottenham and won 4-0 with yourself bagging a goal and two assists from midfield. your girlfriend had been dropped back to defense to give the new signings a chance in midfield but it didn't stop her from joining the group hug you'd initiated after celebrating individually or with bunny. you were walking away from media duties with a proud 'player of the match' trophy in your left hand and match ball in your right, unsure of what you were going to do with the ball but you kept it anyways in case you wanted to practice juggling in your apartment.

you were congratulated by all your teammates as you walked into the changing rooms with music blasting in your ears immediately, mary and kerstin dragging you towards the middle of the room to dance with the other girls before they turned the music down after a couple minutes of celebrating your performance. your girlfriend sneakily winked at you and smiled in response to the blush that spread over your face, both of you going your seperate ways to find your cubbies and get ready to go home.

you'd already settled down on your couch by the time kerstin had arrived home, both of you being cautious about when you spent time together to not raise suspicions from teammates on why you were driving home together from games and training. the dutchwoman had sent you a text that had your heart beating out of your chest still, knowing you'd read it immediately since you always got home before she did.

'taking my stargirl out tomorrow. that performance deserves a celebration and a half prettygirl.❤️'

staying true to her words, kerstin picked you up at the exact time she said she would with a bouquet of roses at your front door, smile on her face and gentle kiss when you invited her in to talk whilst you put the flowers in a vase.

"you didn't have to organise a whole day just because i had a good game, baby."

kerstin walked up to you with a soft sigh as you stood up from tying your laces, wrapping her arms around your waist loosely and leaning in to kiss you lovingly for a couple moments with yours resting over her shoulders. she broke away with gentle pecks at your request for more kisses and you both smiled softly.

"nonsense. my babygirl deserves the world and more."

you both set off not long after the intimate moment and kerstin had opened her car door open for you like a true gentlewoman, arriving at the café you'd had your first date in. glad you recognised it immediately, the dutchie helped you out of the car and shut tbe door for you like you were royalty, kissing the back of your hand with a smile before initiating small talk naturally. not long after drinking your coffees and sharing small snacks that eventually satiated your growing hunger you went for a walk, kirsten doing her best to show her love physically as she complimented your performance from the day before.

one of the best parts about being a footballer dating another footballer is that you were on international duty almost always at the same time, sometimes even playing against each other. it's not always the easiest to have ridiculous scorelines against your girlfriend and it's definitely not easy when her team kicks you out of the olympics by one goal after you'd done everything you could in your power to ensure that didn't happen, but when she texted you to apologise and you texted her to congratulate, you knew you were on the same page.

you cared about each others careers, even if it was at the cost of your own sometimes. both of you knew football is a cruel game in many ways; underdogs having ridiculous scorelines put past them, a bad performance putting you on the bench, injuries littering your friend groups, dreams being taken away when they were millimetres from your grasp. it's mentally and physically challenging, but elite athletes were trained to cope with it- yourself and kerstin had helped each other through it multiple times.

one of the worst parts about being on international duty at the same time was missing her. she was in the netherlands whilst you were in england still, the time difference not being a problem but rather how physically demanding for your countries was, meaning you were catching up on sleep whenever you could and partaking in team bonding without realising you weren't responding to the other's texts. luckily it wasn't one-sided as you were both so busy, but you still felt bad and (slightly) dreaded international duty because of it.

you'd arrived home from st. george's park a couple hours ago after saying goodbye to your teammates and congratulating everyone on their good performances in your matches, now sat on the couch and enjoying the relaxing aura your apartment had before your phone lit up with a text from kerstin.

'i'm coming over. be there in 5'

'everything okay?'

'miss you too much to wait any longer'

immediately knowing why she was coming over, you smiled to yourself and shook your head in disbelief at how needy your girlfriend could get. fair enough, you hadn't seen each other in nearly a month, but you were going to see each other in a couple days at club training and afterwards for a date you'd planned. before you could check your appearance or think to put your phone on charge in your bedroom a sharp chorus of knocks echoed throughout your apartment, making you jump off the couch and open the door in record time.

you barely had time to think before kerstin's lips were on yours and her hands were pulling your hips into hers, foot shutting the door behind her whilst she turned to find the kitchen island and place you on it. your legs wrapped around her waist as she kissed you feverishly like she had no time left in the world, fingers gripping the soft flesh of your toned thighs that was left exposed by your shorts with the occasional slip under your hoodie to tease. your hands tangled themselves into her hair and tugged at her roots gently whilst kerstin slipped her tongue into your mouth, clearly desperate for more than a kiss judging by the way her hands were trailing along your thighs shamelessly.

Modern Levi thought:

He would absolutely find me getting mad at randoms when playing an online game hilarious.

Maybe he’s in the living room reading or on his laptop. (Has a whole set up himself for his job with three monitors in the same room but he needs a break from that space) Suddenly you just start yelling and he smiles to himself because he’s in for a show.

“Why the FUCK are you all the way over there by yourself” “Get FUCKED dummy” “I just wanna know what made you think you could push a whole squad by yourself and gave absolutely no comms” “AAAAAAHHH!!!!”

You’re 100% aware how obnoxious you’re being but you can’t help it when playing these online FPS games. You should probably stop, maybe stick to the story mode games, Levi prefers those anyways. Right now you’re replaying RDR2 and he sits next to you while you play. Kinda like catching up on a show together but instead it’s video games. You know exactly what happened in the game but you let Levi figure things out and he immediately did not like Dutch.

“He looks slimey and so does that Micah”

He also HATED the Strauss missions. Always told you not to do them.

“He purposely preyed on people that were desperate he’s a rat and deserves to lose the money” Boy did he have something to say when he learned how Arthur got sick. (He shed a tear when he died and you were sobbing even though it was like the 4th time you played)

Anyways he oddly finds you freaking out playing video games comforting as well. You suddenly get quiet and he goes to check on you. You’re on the floor on your stomach and your cat is laying on you.

“Did you win?” He smirks. You just turn your face and glare at him while he chuckles at you.

Zitiron- a creature with the bottom half of a fish and the top half of a knight.

The zitiron only shows up in three sources that I can find- the Ortus Sanitatis (published in Germany 1491, author unknown), Van der Naturen Bloeme (early 14th c) by Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant, and De natura rerum (1244 CE) by Flemish writer Thomas of Cantimpré. Van der Naturen Bloeme is actually just a Dutch translation of the Latin De natura rerum, so technically there's only two original sources. The only reason I mention both is that the original De natura rerum- which is sourced from a large number of works by philosophers and writers such as Aristotle, Pliny the Elder, St. Ambrose, Jacques de Vitry, and too many others to explore them all as original sources- doesn't have any illustrations and is in Latin, which I can't read, making it a personally useless source. But Van der Naturen Bloeme does have illustrations- the third image in this post is Jacob van Maerlant's interpretation of the zitiron I assume to be outlined in De natura rerum.

The only other original place that a zitiron can be found, according to the internet, is in the Ortus Sanitatis, a Latin natural history encyclopedia with no known author published in 1491 in Mainz, Germany. It has illustrations, the second image in this post is the author's interpretation. But again, I can't read Latin and it's hard to read the stylized text to put into google translate.

There is almost no information about the zitiron online, which is a shame because it's a really interesting figure. If you can read Latin or medieval Dutch I would LOVE to work together to place the origin of this mythological creature and learn more about it!

For the drawing, I wanted to honor Jacob van Maerlant and Thomas of Cantimpré's Flemish heritage. The helmet, chainmail, shield, and goedendag on the zitiron are representative of what the Flemish forces wore and used at the Battle of the Golden Spurs, a 1302 victory of the French that is a source of pride and celebrated every July 11th by the Flemish today.

TLDR: The zitiron is a little known creature from the Middle Ages or perhaps antiquity, with the bottom half of a fish and the top half of a knight. My drawing is inspired by the Flemish culture of two of the only writers to leave any information about the zitiron.

If you've got the time and can read Latin, could you take a look at the two Latin texts I mentioned? For the Ortus Sanitatis, I was able to flip through the whole thing and find the page that has the info on zitirons. It's on page 730 here- (x). But for De natura rerum, which you can access here (x), I have no idea where it could be. There's a translation project for it ongoing through Kalamazoo College, but I don't see anything relating to zitirons or relevant mythology on their page so far. And if you can miraculously read medieval Dutch, here's the link to the page on zitirons in Van der Naturen Bloeme (x).

AITA for not supporting my (25f) brother (19m) after he broke up with his boyfriend (21m)?

My brother (I’ll call him Rob) came out as gay a few years ago and my whole family has been normal and supportive of him. Two years ago, Rob told our family that he had a boyfriend, a Dutch guy who I’ll call Finn. Finn is two years older than Rob, and they met online through gaming. Rob never talked about his relationship much, so I never learned anything about Finn except for a few basic things my parents told me.

Finn came to the US to visit Rob last year for a couple of weeks, and he stayed with my family (my brother still lives at home). That kind of a trip is expensive and I don’t think Finn’s family has a lot of money, so it was a big deal that he was able to come. I think the visit was fine based on what I heard (I wasn’t there since I don’t live at home), and they continued to date long distance.

This June, Finn came to visit again, this time for three weeks. Unlike the previous visit, my sister (23f) is also in the house since she had to go on medical leave from college. About five days after Finn arrived, my mom warned me that Rob was probably going to break up with him. My brother doesn’t ever talk about Finn, so I wasn’t entirely surprised, but I assumed he would wait until the visit was over to avoid making things awkward, especially since nothing big or problematic had happened. But no - a couple days later, my sister told me that they had broken up, and it’s been making things in the house extremely uncomfortable. Rob is refusing to be in the same room as Finn, who has nothing to do since he’s stuck at my family’s house in the suburbs. Finn is also going to be continuing to stay with my family for two more weeks, since he can’t go home early since he can’t afford the plane ticket back to the Netherlands.

This is my brother’s first relationship, so he hasn’t had to navigate a breakup before, but it seems extremely rude and inconsiderate of him to do this, and I think he’s old enough to be expected to handle it more maturely. He hasn’t talked about it with me except to vaguely allude to “stuff happening with Finn,” and he doesn’t seem sad or bothered by this at all except for not wanting to have to interact with Finn at all. I feel like I should support my brother, but my sister and I feel like he’s being really selfish and inconsiderate, and I think he handled the situation really poorly, especially since my parents and sister are having to deal with the majority of the awkwardness. AITA?

I'm in a drabble mood! Finally something's out again, sorry to make you wait so long. I just wanted to write something, because I feel like I haven't written in ages because life's being a bitch right now. Anyway, who's also down for some DJ Lando stuff, because lately, damn. Not proofread!!!

Masterlist

DJ-ing, one of Lando Norris’ new hobbies ever since he and Martin Garix crossed paths after the Dutch Grand Prix. A DJ set for on the road became his new favorite occupation during long flights. The remaining time he’d spend listening to music, scrolling through Instagram, watching YouTube videos.

It was after the Austin Grand Prix where the two of you met, him entertaining the crowd with his music. You are sipping your drink, watching the crowd from the VIP area you were standing at.

You were a singer, not big, yet, but you were working on it. You had just released your first album, and you felt your fandom growing, as well as your name. You had been invited to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which you gladly accepted, being a Formula One fan yourself.

You raised your drink up in the air, dancing along the music the McLaren driver was blasting through the boxes, the crowd cheering at all the songs. Martijn was watching you, since you were one of his close friends as well. He saw how you were enjoying your time, a proud smile on his face. He had watched you grow, from a young girl that loved to sing, to a woman that was slowly becoming one of the best artists in the world.

‘’What?’’ You were eyeing the Dutch DJ, an eyebrow raised as a smirk appeared on your lips. ‘’Nothing, just glad to see you’re enjoying your time here.’’ He smiled back, winking at you before taking the wheel from Lando.

You and Lando had met just before the party, since he arrived just as you and Martijn were talking. You couldn’t lie, the guy was handsome, sexy even, and him being a DJ and interested in music made you like the driver even more.

‘’That was a hell of a session.’’ You shot a nice smile to the 22-year-old Formula One driver, receiving a mischievous smirk in return. ‘’Thanks, I learned from the best.’’

The rest of the night consisted of dancing, drinking, and being a little too close to the Brit, which you didn’t really mind, and neither did he.

‘’We shouldn’t let anyone find out about this.’’ You whispered; lips pressed against Lando’s as he pushed you against the wall. For sure the both of you had a little too much to drink, causing you to end up in his bed in his room of the Hilton Hotel.

‘’I know, they won’t...’’ He mumbled as his hands moved their way up, quickly taking off your clothes because they had been on your body long enough according to the McLaren driver.

You had kept in contact but promised to not tell anyone about your little hook up, not even Martijn. However, it never stayed with just one hook up. The both of you saw it as a way to relax, and it definitely helped both teams.

Lando was more relaxed at the track, even when people threw hate at him, mostly online. Ever since his breakup with Luisa he had changed, in a good way, according to you. He was more relaxed, more open for new things, spending more time with his friends and just generally happier. The hookups the two of you had just expanded those feelings.

You were also more relaxed going into stressful meetings about your new album, a possible upcoming tour and more PR related things such as interviews and talk shows.

It was at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix when you saw him again, dressed in his race suit, the black fireproof top doing his golden tan good justice. His curly hair quite messy, due to the high humidity at the track, it only made you think of moments you were the one to be responsible for the messy hair, and not the weather. You bite your bottom lip at the image, and simply take a deep breath to shake those thoughts out of your mind.

The day went by quickly, and you hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to Lando a lot due to the fact he was quite busy. It was only at the after party when you got the chance to talk to the P3 man himself.

‘’Congrats on your podium.’’ You embraced the Brit in a hug, the scent of his Dior Sauvage perfume filling your nostrils immediately. God, so good.

‘’Thanks, glad to have you here to witness that.’’ He smiled, his hand moving towards your lower back to guide you to the VIP area of the party.

‘’Let’s make this party one to remember.’’

‘’Definitely.’’

After a few too many drinks, you and Lando found yourself in a familiar situation, tangled up with each other, hands all over each other, lips smashing together. But that’s it, nothing more than kisses and cuddles, no sex.

‘’I’ve been wanting to ask you something.’’ He whispered in between kisses, making you pull him even closer to you.

‘’Couldn’t you’ve done that when we were both sober?’’ You groaned as your hands cupped his cheeks, your lips disconnecting so you could look into his eyes.

‘’I don’t know if I would have the guts to do it sober.’’ He slurred, a sigh escaping his lips, followed by his tongue wetting his perfectly swollen lips.

‘’Lando…’’ You whispered, not actually believing what was happening right now. ‘’No, please let me finish.’’ He says, his hand raising, index finger sticking up to place it against your lips.

‘’I have been thinking for a while now, and I’m sure now, I think.’’ He started. ‘’I want to take things to the next level, you know? I’ve been doing it for a while now and I want you to be a part of this journey with me.’’ He mumbled, his finger still in front of your lips.

‘’I want you to be the one, I want to make a remix of a song of yours.’’ He then says, smiling up at you. You did the same, a big smile making him remove his index finger for it to be replaced with his lips.

‘’Yes, that would be freaking awesome.’’ You whispered against his soft lips. ‘’Hopefully we’ll remember this deal tomorrow morning.’’ You mumbled as your hands reached for his hair.

‘’Oh trust me, I’ll remember.’’ And this was just the beginning, the beginning of a partnership, and not just in the studio.
