it is insane to me that in the past two weeks i have not seen anyone mention the idea of installing a permanent air bridge or something similar to facilitate humanitarian aid to gaza. only france has just deployed a navy ship with helicopters to lend aid to hospitals and it will send an airplane with medical supplies tomorrow (article in dutch). and no other western government so far is showing any signs of similarly aiding the people of gaza.
2 million people are at risk of death by starvation and dehydration. lack of drinkable water puts them at risk of contracting sicknesses through consumption of contaminated water en masse. they have no access to fuel or electricity because it is being withheld on purpose. hospitals are overcrowded with those wounded or forcefully displaced by iof threats and bombings, and they are running out of supplies while their generators are almost running on fumes. actual international humanitarian organisations like oxfam, the red crescent and the un are barely able to provide help anymore bc they have no supplies. active fucking genocide and we're all waiting for israel to let a few meagre truck convoys with minimal supplies into their personal concentration camp while they're carpet bombing the civilian populace to hell and ignoring international law at every turn.
"oh, but an air bridge is not sustainable" back in the 1940s the allies supplied west berlin with necessities by airplane for almost a year bc the soviet union had blocked all points of entry:
Tumblr media
obviously we're living almost 80 years after the fact and the political and geographical situation are not strictly comparable. that doesn't mean it's impossible to provide aid. that doesn't mean it shouldn't be our moral duty to help palestinian civilians with everything we have. these are people in need. but it's not the people of west berlin and their allies against the soviet union, it's palestinians against the state of israel, and it makes all the difference in the world. this time, the usa backs the oppressor, and it would never reach out a finger to help palestinians. and by extension, so would few other (western) countries. many of them are calling for ceasefires and more humanitarian aid. some of them are warning israel about ignoring international law. but are they actually putting their money where their mouth is and actively getting supplies where they need to go?
oh, they're all sending soldiers and military materials, sure, because god forbid a regional war unfolds and we don't all have a finger in that pie. and all the while they keep talking, and planning international conferences, taking days, sitting and discussing what should be done, as if the urgency of this crisis doesn't even register, hasn't for the past two weeks. as if it never will. if you ask me the absolute minimum governments across the world are simply not putting in to help palestinians is testament to how much they do not care about them. so we have to keep raising our voices for palestine, keep marching, and remind them - not all of us can be complacent in the face of a genocide

hi :) sorry for the weird question, but how "normal" it is for dutch people to learn/know german?
in italy you /have/ to study another foreign language in middle school beside english, and it's usually either french or spanish because they're the most similar (even though the majority of people tend to forget them later on) — I was curious if y'all had something similar?
and yes, the question comes from max speaking such good german it left me wondering if it may be a "dutch" thing and not just a "he's a polyglot" moment
no no this is an EXCELLENT question and i would love to answer it.
in the netherlands you have to do a ‘second’ language too, next to dutch and english, and here you can choose between either german or french. you get both of these at first before you have to choose in like the third or fourth year (differs per high school level) so most dutch people have at least SOME knowledge of both of these languages.
there’s actually a lot of german tourism in the netherlands which is why especially people in touristy area’s (big cities + places near water) speak german pretty fluently.
HOWEVER i’m pretty sure the reason max speaks german so well is because his parents spent a lot of time with the schumachers growing up?? or he might be a polyglot yeah. because let me tell you i had german for 6 years and i in no way speak it as fluently as that man does lmao

There's this weird 'achievement unlocked' feeling you get when you hear something again you heard a lot as a child when you didn't understand the language it was said in but somehow absorbed word by word. And now you do know the language and finally you know what it means and it tickles your brain.

My dad said something a few weeks ago that's been rattling around in my brain ever since.
See, he always said we were Polish. I knew that my grandfather's grandparents were Polish immigrants. My eldest aunt on that side put together a family genealogy a while back, and I saw their names in there. But I never felt like we were connected to that heritage, beyond eating kielbasa regularly.
Then the other day my dad was watching Backyardigans with my daughter, and I came in while they watched the "Polka Palace Party" episode. And my dad told me that when his family attended Polish weddings as a kid, they would dance the polka. He said he couldn't remember the steps anymore, but wished he did.
Until that moment, I never really grasped how close I was to an actual cultural heritage. A culture my dad had participated in within his lifetime that my brothers and I knew almost nothing about.
At the library the other day I found a book of Polish traditions and folklore, so now I'm learning more about my ancestors' customs! I also taught myself to read the Polish alphabet. And I'm getting a Polish word of the day in my inbox. I can now say useful things like "kettle" and "the fork is on the dirty plate." I'm so handy to have around, I know.
I also messaged my aforementioned aunt after the library visit to ask her if she knew anymore. She said she could teach me to dance the polka! But she ALSO said that there was a festival later in the year that had been very important when they were growing up, and where it's held our ancestors actually helped found a Catholic church! So now me and L and my dad and my aunt are going to go on a family heritage trip later this year!
I'm just so excited to connect more deeply to my family, both living and dead

I will say I dislike how gentile-centric public remembrance can often be. not saying it has to exclusively revolve around jewish victims bc obviously there were others victimised. what I mean is... public speakers at ceremonies implicitly assuming everyone in the crowd is gentile. like today the mayor referenced a jewish girl who had to wear the star on her clothes and asked "what would you feel if you saw that?" I understand the sentiment but some people in the audience would not have been observing that girl, they'd have been her

The statement said it was his hand so he’ll be out for at least three to six weeks. So he’ll miss like three races which won’t be good because that leave him with nine races maybe seven if you count races for him to bounce back
I feel like whenever athletes get injured, they heal faster than the average person. I can't see Daniel missing more than 2 races. But I have been loud & wrong.
