Chapter Two: Something New

Chapter Summary: Steve’s new acquaintance gets him to try something different.

Chapter Word Count: 1639

A/N: I really love vignettes and if that wasn't apparent before, it will become so in this chapter. Also author bias pokes out a little bit more; Spotify is the only streaming service I have any familiarity with so that’s what I’m using. I’ve excised most of my musical preferences in this story (it used to make up a fairly big chunk) but my frame of reference will pop up from time to time, as these things tend to do.

Steve Rogers was boring.

“Okay, no.”

He leaned his head to one side. “It’s just a coffee.”

I hadn’t meant to actually blurt that out, but fuck it; I was rolling with it now. “I just mean– you always pick that. Why not try something new?”

“I don’t want to try something new. I want that,” he said and looked at me with a raised eyebrow, like he was scolding me? Fuck that. “You said you’d buy my coffee. That’s my coffee.”

“Come on, I’m paying. This is the point where you pick something you thought about getting but didn’t want to spend your money on.”

“What happens if I don’t like it?”

“Throw it out.”

He made a face. “That’s wasteful.”

Maybe so, but he didn’t want a little change? His face said ‘no’ though so I rolled my eyes and got up. “All right; I’ll buy your boring coffee.”

“You don’t know exactly what I get,” Steve said, craning his neck as I walked away.

“You order the same fucking thing every time. They sure as hell know your order.”

Of course they knew exactly how much cream or sugar he did (mostly did not) want. So I got his drink, and then I got a little something different for myself, with a tiny empty cup on the side. I came back and plopped my stuff down before I could spill, but I handed him his drink properly. “I have to admit, I was a little relieved about the flavoring; I didn’t know you had it in you.”

He stopped just before he could take a drink. “I don’t–…wait.”

I tried to contain my laughter. It shook my body and he gave me a hard look. “Sorry, sorry!” I said and started pouring out a little of my drink into the cup. “I couldn’t help myself.”

“That’s cold,” he said.

“No. This is cold,” I said and gave him his little sample. “Here. It’s something I ordered and it’s just a little bit– enough to taste, not enough to waste.”

“You’re a poet and you didn’t know it,” he quipped as he held the cup.

“I absolutely knew it,” I said, which got him to smile. The drink sample itself was already on very shaky ground by the way he regarded it. He looked hesitant but he sniffed it, very slowly took a sip, and…put it down with a weird look on his face. “That’s okay,” I said and leaned back to toss it before he could worry about it.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be,” he said and took what I assumed was a palate-cleansing sip of his own drink.

“A ringing endorsement,” I said and unwrapped my headphones. I didn’t take it as a loss– there were a lot of good things on that menu board. I’d get him. Eventually.

He didn’t show up for a few days. When he came back, he was coming in just as I was leaving and all we did was say “Hi” in passing. I felt a little…not bad, but disappointed. Oddly enough. We didn’t talk all the time, but he was pleasant company to have. He was actually perfect for my not-super-social tastes. It was nice to have someone who I could just sit quietly with.

One day, he was already there with his usual. I picked out something different but warm, and sort of closer to coffee. Might as well ease him into it.

“That’s pretty good,” he admitted and put down the empty tester cup.

“Good,” I said and made a mental note of it.

“Good?” he asked, like he was suspicious.

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that. “Um…yeah,” I said. “What? I’m not trying to horrify you.”

He lifted one hand and shoulder, like ‘okay.’ “I’m used to people trying to shock me with things.”

“I’m not out to antagonize people. Generally,” I said. “If we’re friends, then yes, that’s completely reasonable. But I just barely met you, so you don’t have to worry. Yet.”

“Yet,” he repeated, his smile leaning to one side.

It was my turn to shrug. “You never know.”

Despite the random admirers, Steve was mostly left alone. There was a good handful of regulars and apparently most people wanted so badly to play into the ‘cool, unaffected by anything’ New York image that they’d rather stare longingly at Captain America than approach him. Some did, of course, but I was a bit surprised at how few those were.

“Do you need something?” Steve asked, and I suddenly realized I was staring in his general vicinity.

“Oh, no, sorry,” I said and rested my head on my hand, and fixed my gaze elsewhere. “I’m just staring off into space; don’t mind me.”

His smile looked a little strange, like he kind of wanted to ask why I was so weird. Or maybe I was just projecting. If only he knew that was only barely the tip of the iceberg. He didn’t get the chance to speak though– he suddenly sat a little stiffer and I barely realized why when a couple of young women approached him from behind. I put my head down to my book. How did he do that?

I thought I might ask him, as a conversation piece, but those girls kept talking…and talking…and talking. What they talked about I couldn’t say; it was mostly them fangirling but in a way that made me want to grit my teeth. Steve too, apparently, by how tight that smile was, and how hard he gripped that sketchbook. He hadn’t seemed so badly affected by that girl who had stammered at him for ten minutes, so they must not have been saying anything good. It seemed wrong to just sit back, but…

I had an idea, but I didn’t know if I should step in. I didn’t want to– this had the chance to be humiliating, if Steve didn’t play along. However, I thought he might, just out of politeness? Either way I decided, fuck it, I was going for it. I cleared my throat, but it was only enough to get Steve’s eyes to flick at me. I cleared it louder, and actually got his full attention, which (eventually) got the gaggle to shut up.

I smiled at Steve. “Uh, I found that song I was talking about, but you’ll have to listen to it now. I gotta get back to work soon.”

Steve practically slouched with relief; it was ridiculous that the impromptu fan club didn’t see it for what it was. I did get some dirty looks though, and they only intensified when Steve politely thanked them and sent them on their way. I wiped one of the earbuds and handed it to him, and randomly picked a song I thought he might like.

“It’s a little different from what you might be used to,” I murmured into his free ear. “But it’s pretty chill. A couple songs, okay?”

The look he gave me said ‘thank you’ better than words could. I sat back, navigating the minefield of my music, until I had to go. Apparently done with people, Steve packed up when I did, and we parted ways at the door.

“I try not to be…like that too much, you know?”

I looked up at Steve and could not, for the life of me, figure out how we got from “hi” and “hey” and a half hour of utter silence to that. “Uh…what?” I asked.

“Sorry,” he said and looked askance for a moment. “Those girls yesterday. I feel bad for brushing them off– they weren't that rude– I just…didn’t feel like talking much.”

“Oh. Yeah, I get that,” I said and looked back at my book.

“You get that particularly right now?” he asked, but he sounded amused.

“This is the age of multitasking. Get used to it,” I said but I put in my bookmark and shut it. I was close to having to leave anyway; starting a new chapter now would be a bad idea. “I was worried that would be overstepping. So I’m glad it worked out.”

“It wasn’t. I really appreciated it,” he said with a smile that showed it. “I actually liked the songs.”

The way he said it was…well, not intentionally insulting, so I went with it. “Why so surprised?”

“I don’t like a lot of music these days.” He shifted and then shrugged. “Maybe I’m just not used to it.”

That could have been it. Or. “Who’s been exposing you to music?”

“Tony,” he said. “Oh, right– Tony, my friend, is actually Tony S–”

“Tony Stark, yeah, I got that,” I said and he laughed. I rolled my eyes. “Smartass. See if I teach you to appreciate modern music.”

“I’ve been told I’m hopeless,” he said.

“I doubt you actually are, if your music timeline jumps from Bing Crosby to ACDC.” I scoffed at the thought. “That’s like going from Baroque to Blues.” Well. “Okay, maybe not, but hopefully you get the idea.”

Steve stared at me. “You know Bing Crosby?”

He sounded so hopeful, I couldn’t help but rope myself in. “Do you have any music streaming service? Like Spotify or something?”

“I probably could ask Pepper,” he said.

“Cool. Ask them to hook you up.” I scooted over to him. “Here; check this out.” I showed him the basics of Spotify, using Bing Crosby as an example. “The algorithm for some of the playlists can be a little…odd. Just zero in on what you like for now and I’ll figure out some playlists to make you when I have more time.” Speaking of which– I glanced at the clock, cursed, and started packing up. “I gotta go; I’ll see you later.”

“Have a nice day at work,” he said, overly cheerful. I flipped him off and he just laughed.

“Alanna…”

The way he said her name was delightfully lascivious. It rolled off his tongue, originating from his voice which was as deep as a chasm. Instead of the indifferent, impersonal, tone that usually marked his words—there was a myriad of emotion caught in it. Adoration. Longing. Sincerity. He didn’t need to say anything more. Franz approached her, swept her off her feet as easily as if she was a piece of paper, and allowed her to taste that voice of his. He was strong, warm, and in that moment, she knew he loved her.

“Three pints of blood.”

Alanna blinked.

She was no longer wrapped up in the scene her imagination had conjured. Instead, she found herself at her Wednesday afternoon class in the lecture hall. The professor had brought in a fake cadaver to demonstrate whatever he was teaching that day.

“This is how much a body loses and then goes into level 4 hemorrhage shock. A transfusion must happen or else the patient will die,” her professor reached into the cadaver and yanked out a plastic heart that was apparently made of some kind of squishy material as he squeezed it. Of course, no blood or other bodily fluids seeped out but it got the point across, “the heart can’t pump fast enough to replenish lost plasma at that point.”

Alanna had been finding herself drifting more and more into daydreams as of late. She was usually alert—taking notes, and asking questions. She was ashamed to admit it, but she didn’t even know entirely what the professor was talking about now because had started out the lecture on blood pathogens. She looked down at her notebook, and saw all she had been doing was etching hearts in the margins and had incomplete notes but for one clear line reading ‘blood should stay in the body.’

She sighed and glanced at the clock on the back wall and saw it was already time to go! Lectures sure did fly by when her mind was racing about other things.

“Be sure to read the section on blood types, transfusions, and diseases before the next session,” the professor reminded the class as they began to pack up their books and bags. Alanna stayed seated for a few more moments, still musing that it was no surprise the predominant ‘thing’ on her mind was her best friend. Dreaming up scenarios of confessions of love, either by both or one of them. If not that, it was imagining their first kiss. Alanna had kissed boys before…well rather a boy. However, that was when she was 15 and it wasn’t serious. What she felt for Franz now, was unlike any other feeling in her body she had ever experienced.

She was in love with him.

After talking to her brother more about it, without naming names, she had come to the conclusion it had to be love. Nothing had driven her heart to beat so fast or feel so tight in her chest just from thinking about someone. She could usually navigate her thoughts with clarity but now they were just a disorganized jumble injected with a heavy dose of feelings as soon as she thought about Franz.

“Oh, Miss Thackery!” the Professor called as she slipped her backpack straps over her shoulders. She turned her head over her shoulder and saw him gesturing for her to join him at the floor where he stood. She nodded and joined him next to the cadaver model, while her classmates shuffled out of the hall and onto their next classes or naps.

“What do you need, Professor?” she asked curiously, hoping her lack of focus was not noticeable or causing an issue. Maybe it was a good thing she had never been so in love before, because she didn’t see how she could have completed high school if she had been struck with such a distracting affliction.

Her professor didn’t seem at all offended she hadn’t asked a single question during the lecture, he instead began speaking with great animation, “The medical studies program will be taking applications here in the next few weeks for students interested in doing their next semester abroad. Only a handful are selected and I think you would make an excellent candidate and would be willing to endorse you.”

Alanna beamed, feeling very flattered that her professor would not only single her out to tell her about the program but endorse her as well.

“I’m honored! What does it consist of? Where would I go if chosen?”

"It varies from year to year—the committee is still finalizing the location, however it’s a great opportunity few get to have, and I’d ask you to consider it. Not only would you be able to continue your studies but receive hands-on experience in helping patients in another area of the world!”

“That sounds amazing! Yes! I will definitely apply for it when I see the announcement. Thank you for letting me know about it,” Alanna’s smile grew even wider as she left the lecture hall and emerged into the building lobby. She took a moment to sit down and giddily think about travelling out of the region, being immersed in another culture while helping those who needed it. She pulled out her phone, immediately checking her text messages to see if Franz had sent anything and to her delight there was one unread message from an hour before but she hadn’t seen it since she had been in class. She hadn’t heard from him since she had visited him at his dorm and eagerly pressed the view button.

Franzster: Hey, thanks for the flowers. Mom really loved them.

She flashed a grin at her phone screen, even more delighted to hear that her flowers were appreciated. She had decided to send them over after hearing about Ms. Schoulsburg being in the hospital. She still was very devastated that his mother was ill and that their family bakery was going to be sold.

She typed back:

I’m so glad! How is she doing? How are you?

She tapped her foot, hoping he was around his phone to answer. She hadn’t realized until the last couple of days but she really hadn’t talked to him all that much since school started compared with previous years—so made a mental note to reach out more often and not get as lost in studying as she had been. Her phone made a noise, indicating that it received a text and she crossed her leg over the other, smiling as she opened the reply from Franz.

Franzster: She’s still there. Hopefully they will let me take her out this weekend. Sorry, but I have to go. I am pulling all the shifts at the bakery this week in her absence. She quickly typed out:

Hopefully! I’ll chat with you later. Have a great day!

She put her phone back into her pocket as she stood up, feeling slightly disheartened they couldn’t continue their chat. She could always retreat into her thoughts-turned-daydreams and imagine what else they could talk about but it wasn’t the same. She needed to try and concentrate anyway. She decided to head over to the campus library, she had a few books she’d been meaning to check out for her studies and she had a whole section to read before next class, as the professor had assigned.

Alanna thought that maybe, she had enough books as she straightened her shoulders and climbed the stairs to the upper floor of library, the weight of her backpack nearly pulled her backward. She needed to remember to empty her bag before her next class, otherwise there’d be no more room left!

She came upon the bookshelf that supposedly contained the title she had been wanting to check out when she noticed a familiar red head sitting at the study table directly across from it.

“How’s your robot holding up?” She approached the table and crossed her arms; she tried not to let any enmity seep into her words. Shane seemed to jump at being addressed publicly, coming out of a particular intense stare of boredom or so it seemed. He had a blank piece of loose-leaf paper in front of him. If he was doing a writing assignment, he was failing miserably.

The redhead turned his bored stare to Alanna and quirked a brow as if to ask her why she bothered addressing him, “It’s just fine.”

“Good,” she said a bit indignantly, because if anything went wrong with it, she had no doubt Shane would have blamed her for it. She was still miffed that he hadn’t thanked her for staying to help the other night. She figured he was a bit like his father in that respect.

She’d been exposed to the Calhouns because they had lived on the same street as her family growing up. Alanna didn’t like to throw around mean words but Mr. Calhoun was a bit of a…well…a butt head. She had seen him out in his yard when she was younger, watering his garden but then spraying water at any stray animals that happened to walk by. They were the same animals that she would leave out food for in case they were hungry. She felt bad, like it was her fault they got sprayed because they wouldn’t have been there in the first place if they didn’t expect food. What really made her burn with anger was that Mr. Calhoun had the nerve to chuckle when the poor cats or dogs went skittering off in the opposite direction, shaking cold water from their fur. She stopped feeding strays after two whole summers of that behavior.

It reminded her that Mr. Calhoun was running for mayor and he certainly didn’t have her vote. People who treated other living things with such disdain didn’t deserve to be in any kind of position of power.

She began to search the bookshelf for the book she wanted but heard Shane clear is throat from behind her.

She whipped around with a slight frown but found he had kicked out the chair next to him and nodded toward it as if she should sit. She did so, but with suspicion—’welcoming’ was not an adjective she would use to describe the red head. He wasn’t outright mean, but his demeanor was that of an intellectual snob—people, it seemed, were all just too stupid to waste his time interacting with.

She pulled the straps of her backpack off her shoulders so she wasn’t sitting so awkwardly, letting it to ground with a slight ‘thump.’ She met Shane's gaze to see what he wanted.

“So, I forgot to thank you the other night,” he leaned forward and rested his arms on his knees, his eyes were intensely serious though; they seemed to want to dart to anywhere else than hers but held firm nonetheless. Alanna’s brows hiked upward in surprise that he was acknowledging it. “I’m sorry, I just don’t usually get help for that sort of thing and forgot. So, thanks for helping me figure what was wrong—maybe now I’ll beat out Orbinson to get into the tournament.”

Alanna shook her head back and forth, suddenly confused, “What do you mean ‘beat out?’ I thought all the robots get a chance to participate?”

“Well no, not at the regional level. Each college picks one robot to send to compete. You can tell the other members at SSU don’t take it seriously enough since they left for break instead of working on their builds. Only Orbinson and I really have the chance for competing, but that’s just my opinion,” Shane explained, and his serious stare was interrupted by a few crinkles at their edges as he grinned. Alanna had never actually been in an official robotics program before and her brother never mentioned that he always beat out his classmates to complete at the regional competitions. She bit her lip in worry, now wondering if she had unfairly given Shane the advantage as he wouldn’t have figured out what was wrong with his robot without her. Then again, she’d given advice to Reggie as well that bettered his build. Perhaps she should have just kept her mouth shut. Her brow creased, remembering how Reggie had seemed annoyed with her advice, probably wishing would have kept it shut in the first place.

“What’s wrong?” Shane asked, seeing the unusual expression, well it was unusual for Alanna—the human personification of sunshine.

She took in a breath and released her frown, settling her expression back to a Franz-like neutral.

“Nothing. You’re welcome. Glad I could help,” though her tone wasn’t indicative of gladness. She picked her back pack up and slung one strap on her shoulder, trying to keep herself balanced from tipping the other direction because of all the books in it. Curs-ed Newton’s laws! “Good luck with the competition, Shane.”

“Hey wait,” he said and paused while she turned around, regarding him with slight annoyance. She had things to do, and didn’t feel like chit-chatting with her old high school rival.

“What?”

“Are you sure you can’t join the robotics program? I mean, it’d nice to feel challenged again,” he asked and then added the last part in that arrogant tone he always seemed to have.

Alanna grinned sarcastically and narrowed her eyes, shaking her head, “Reggie doesn’t challenge you enough?”

“Orbinson does all right but he lacks imagination. You always had it.”

At that rare compliment, her grin transformed into something genuine and a bit regretful, “Sorry, I have too much going on with my coursework to dedicate time to building tech anymore.” Especially if she needed to do the work required to get into that program that the Professor told her about.

“Well, maybe you should stop by more often to see what is being worked on, since you’ve managed that much,” Shane suggested.

“Why? Are you running out of ideas?” she teased.

He made a doubtful scoff at the back of his throat in response and rolled his eyes; this was the kind of banter they’d always had in high school when the science fair came around every year.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” she chuckled, “Anyway, I have to get a book and get back to studying.”

“Same,” Shane gestured to his unwritten paper and promptly turned around but looked back over his shoulder with the same slight grin, “See you around.”

She nodded and quickly scanned the row of book spines, grabbing the one she was looking for in the first place. She saw some others near it that piqued her interest but feeling that literal weight on her shoulders reminded her she didn’t have room for all of them. She frowned in thought, trying to solve her dilemma and came to the conclusion she would get the books she wanted and she would just carry the rest in her arms if need be.

She emerged from the library triumphant. She had her books, and now she was…

“Heeeeey Alanna,” she nearly jumped as her train of thought went reeling off the track. She balled her fist and looked up to see Reggie of all people, smiling at her. She blinked a few times and relaxed her posture before replying, “Hello Reggie.”

What a coincidence she should run into him right after thinking about him. He had his messenger-style bag slung over his chest and adjusted the strap as he said, “You going off to study?”

“Yeah actually, just had to pick up some books first,” she bobbed her head to indicate the stack she was carrying.

“You need help?” he offered.

“Thanks, but I can manage,” she started walking down the sidewalk toward the campus coffee shop. She liked to study there during the weekday afternoons. The library was too stiff, her dorm room was too crowded—but the sofas and the table in the corner of the coffee shop were quiet and cozy.

“H-Hey, I…I wanted to say that I was sorry for snapping at you the other night,” she heard him say from behind her. She hadn’t realized he was following her, and looked over her shoulder to see his sheepish expression. He was nervously running his hands through his dark hair, mussing it one way, then the other while he looked at the ground, “I actually took your suggestion and installed audio component lower on the bot.” She stopped walking, and felt the light autumn breeze bluster past them. She’d had two guys apologize to her the same day about what happened in the same night—three if she counted Franz's apology text but for an unrelated thing. Timing was an odd thing. She turned around fully but not with her usual smile, “Thanks, I accept your apology, but I have to know—why were you so short with me? If you went ahead and took my advice, it surely wasn’t because my ideas were bad?”

Reggie shook his head, “No, I just got overwhelmed—it’s not everyday someone shows that much of an interest or knowledge in one of my hobbies.”

“So, your first reaction is to push them away?”

Reggie only knotted his brows in thought as a reply and Alanna continued on her way. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the first time Reggie had pushed her away. Reggie was the only boy she had ever kissed, and she had felt strongly for him at the time and thought he felt the same. He never called after, and it didn’t help that she had told him she only pretended to like him in exchange for Evelyn Jane to spill the secrets of her scheming in the Battle of the Bands. She had told Franz the same thing, however Franz saw through her lie and reached out—he questioned her—Reggie wasn’t brave enough or didn’t care enough to try. Poor Reggie was collateral damage, and that to some degree, was why Alanna felt she owed it to him to try being friends again.

But he made it difficult sometimes.

She was walking up to the coffee shop entrance when Reggie bolted past her and leaned on the door as she was about to open it. She frowned and pressed her lips together, silently questioning why he was blocking her way. “Listen, I really am sorry and I’ll make it up to you,” he grinned with a hint of hope.

“Oh? How?” she arched a brow.

“There’s a meteor shower on Friday night. I can bring my telescope and we could watch it together at the Old Sim State Tower. I’ll bring snacks, some chairs, and we can stargaze the night away. How does that sound?”

She did like stargazing. Had she told him that before? She probably had back in high school when they were chemistry partners; they used to have very long, productive conversations when they had been friends, and she did miss that. Franz, though they talked together often, wasn’t one to hold such lengthy, personal, conversations.

She mulled the idea over in her head, “That sounds lovely, I’d accept that as an apology too.”

Her answer sent Reggie’s smile to its broadest yet and he removed himself from the door, opening it and gesturing she should go inside, away from that chilly autumn breeze.

Internal Conflict: Five Conflicting Traits of a Likable Hero.

1. Flaws and Virtues

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but characters without flaws are boring. This does not, as many unfortunate souls take it to mean, imply that good, kind, or benevolent characters are boring: it just means that without any weaknesses for you to poke at, they tend to be bland-faced wish fulfillment on the part of the author, with a tendency to just sit there without contributing much to the plot.

For any character to be successful, they need to have a proportionate amount of flaws and virtues.

Let’s take a look at Stranger Things, for example, which is practically a smorgasbord of flawed, lovable sweethearts.

We have Joyce Byers, who is strung out and unstable, yet tirelessly works to save her son, even when all conventional logic says he’s dead; We have Officer Hopper, who is drunken and occasionally callous, yet ultimately is responsible for saving the boy’s life; We have Jonathan, who is introspective and loving, but occasionally a bit of a creeper, and Nancy, who is outwardly shallow but proves herself to be a strong and determined character. Even Steve, who would conventionally be the popular jerk who gets his comeuppance, isn’t beyond redemption.

And of course, we have my beloved Eleven, who’s possibly the closest thing Stranger Things has to a “quintessential” heroine. She’s the show’s most powerful character, as well as one of the most courageous. However, she is also the show’s largest source of conflict, as it was her powers that released the Demogorgon to begin with.

Would Eleven be a better character if this had never happened? Would Stranger Things be a better show? No, because if this had never happened, Stranger Things wouldn’t even be a show. Or if it was, it would just be about a bunch of cute kids sitting around and playing Dungeons and Dragons in a relatively peaceful town.

A character’s flaws and mistakes are intended to drive the plotline, and if they didn’t have them, there probably wouldn’t even be a plot.

So don’t be a mouth-breather: give your good, kind characters some difficult qualities, and give your villains a few sympathetic ones. Your work will thank you for it.

2. Charisma and Vulnerability

Supernatural has its flaws, but likable leads are not one of them. Fans will go to the grave defending their favorite character, consuming and producing more character-driven, fan-created content than most other TV shows’ followings put together.

So how do we inspire this kind of devotion with our own characters? Well, for starters, let’s take a look at one of Supernatural’s most quintessentially well-liked characters: Dean Winchester.

From the get-go, we see that Dean has charisma: he’s confident, cocky, attractive, and skilled at what he does. But these qualities could just as easily make him annoying and obnoxious if they weren’t counterbalanced with an equal dose of emotional vulnerability.

As the show progresses, we see that Dean cares deeply about the people around him, particularly his younger brother, to the point of sacrificing himself so that he can live. He goes through long periods of physical and psychological anguish for his benefit (though by all means, don’t feel obligated to send your main character to Hell for forty years), and the aftermath is depicted in painful detail.

Moreover, in spite of his outward bravado, we learn he doesn’t particularly like himself, doesn’t consider himself worthy of happiness or a fulfilling life, and of course, we have the Single Man Tear(TM).

So yeah, make your characters beautiful, cocky, sex gods. Give them swagger. Just, y’know. Hurt them in equal measure. Torture them. Give them insecurities. Make them cry.

Just whatever you do, let them be openly bisexual. Subtext is so last season.

3. Goals For the Future and Regrets From the Past

Let’s take a look at Shadow Moon from American Gods. (For now, I’ll have to be relegate myself to examples from the book, because I haven’t had the chance to watch the amazing looking TV show.)

Right off the bat, we learn that Shadow has done three years in prison for a crime he may or may not have actually committed. (We learn later that he actually did commit the crime, but that it was only in response to being wronged by the true perpetrators.)

He’s still suffering the consequences of his actions when we meet him, and arguably, for the most of the book: because he’s in prison, his wife has an affair (I still maintain that Laura could have resisted the temptation to be adulterous if she felt like it, but that’s not the issue here) and is killed while mid-coital with his best friend.

Shadow is haunted by this for the rest of the book, to the point at which it bothers him more than the supernatural happenings surrounding him.

Even before that, the more we learn about Shadow’s past, the more we learn about the challenges he faced: he was bullied as a child, considered to be “just a big, dumb guy” as an adult, and is still wrongfully pursued for crimes he was only circumstantially involved in.

But these difficulties make the reader empathize with Shadow, and care about what happens to him. We root for Shadow as he tags along with the mysterious and alternatively peckish and charismatic Wednesday, and as he continuously pursues a means to permanently bring Laura back to life.

He has past traumas, present challenges, and at least one goal that propels him towards the future. It also helps that he’s three-dimensional, well-written, and as of now, portrayed by an incredibly attractive actor.

Of course (SPOILER ALERT), Shadow never does succeed in fully resurrecting Laura, ultimately allowing her to rest instead, but that doesn’t make the resolution any less satisfying.

Which leads to my next example...

4. Failure and Success

You remember in Zootopia, when Judy Hopps decides she wants to be cop and her family and town immediately and unanimously endorse her efforts? Or hey, do you remember Harry Potter’s idyllic childhood with his kindhearted, adoptive family? Oh! Or in the X-Files, when Agent Mulder presents overwhelming evidence of extraterrestrial life in the first episode and is immediately given a promotion? No?

Yeah, me neither. And there’s a reason for this: ff your hero gets what they want the entire time, it will be a boring, two-dimensional fantasy that no one will want to read.

A good story is not about the character getting what they want. A good story is about the character’s efforts and their journey. The destination they reach could be something far removed from what they originally thought they wanted, and could be no less (if not more so) satisfying because of it.

Let’s look at Toy Story 3, for example: throughout the entire movie, Woody’s goal is to get his friends back to their longtime owner, Andy, so that they can accompany him to college. He fails miserably. None of his friends believe that Andy was trying to put them in the attic, insisting that his intent was to throw them away. He is briefly separated from them as he is usurped by a cute little girl and his friends are left at a tyrannical daycare center, but with time and effort, they’re reunited, Woody is proven right, and things seem to be back on track.

Do his efforts pay off? Yes -- just not in the way he expected them to. At the end of the movie, a college-bound Andy gives the toys away to a new owner who will play with them more than he will, and they say goodbye. Is the payoff bittersweet? Undoubtedly. It made me cry like a little bitch in front of my young siblings. But it’s also undoubtedly satisfying.

So let your characters struggle. Let them fail. And let them not always get what they want, so long as they get what they need.

5. Loving and Being Loved by Others

Take a look back at this list, and all the characters on it: a gaggle of small town kids and flawed adults, demon-busting underwear models, an ex-con and his dead wife, and a bunch of sentient toys. What do they have in common? Aside from the fact that they’re all well-loved heroes of their own stories, not much.

But one common element they all share is they all have people they care about, and in turn, have people who care about them.

This allows readers and viewers to empathize with them possibly more than any of the other qualities I’ve listed thus far, as none of it means anything without the simple demonstration of human connection.

Let’s take a look at everyone’s favorite caped crusader, for example: Batman in the cartoons and the comics is an easy to love character, whereas in the most recent movies (excluding the splendid Lego Batman Movie), not so much.

Why is this? In all adaptions, he’s the same mentally unstable, traumatized genius in a bat suit. In all adaptions, he demonstrates all the qualities I listed before this: he has flaws and virtues, charisma and vulnerability, regrets from the past and goals for the future, and usually proportionate amounts of failure and success.

What makes the animated and comic book version so much more attractive than his big screen counterpart is the fact that he does one thing right that all live action adaptions is that he has connections and emotional dependencies on other people.

He’s unabashed in caring for Alfred, Batgirl, and all the Robins, and yes, he extends compassion and sympathy to the villains as well, helping Harley Quinn to ultimately escape a toxic and abusive relationship, consoling Baby Doll, and staying with a child psychic with godlike powers until she died.

Cartoon Batman is not afraid to care about others. He has a support network of people who care about him, and that’s his greatest strength. The DC CU’s ever darker, grittier, and more isolated borderline sociopath is failing because he lacks these things.

And it’s also one of the reasons that the Lego Batman Movie remains so awesome.

We finally learn the secret behind the Tattoo on Chakotay’s forehead in the episode that originally aired on November 6, 1995. I mean, this obviously neglected plot line has bothered you right? Every time he has arrived on screen that Tattoo just screamed to be explained! no…oh well. This is Tattoo.

The Episode:

Captain’s Log Undetermined: Tattoo

After discovering a symbol that looks very similar to one he saw once on Earth, Chakotay begins investigating the possibilities that an alien race from the Delta Quadrant once had contact with Chakotay’s own people.

The Story:

Story A: Chakotay and The Sky Spirits

While on an away mission, Chakotay sees a symbol from an ancient race that reminds him of something he saw as a youth. Returning to the ship, Chakotay shares the discovery, and the memories of his youth, with Janeway only to have her inform him that Torres has located a warp trail leading to a nearby M Class Planet. Accepting that this race might have the polyferanides the ship needs, Chakotay agrees to pursue the ship which might hold answers for him as well.

Arriving at the planet, Voyager detects the pollyferanides and Janeway sends an away team to gather information noting that there is a strange EM field preventing their use of the transporters. Taking a shuttle to the surface with Tuvok, Neelix and Torres, Chakotay has another flashback about his youthful doubts concerning the ‘sky spirits’. Landing the shuttle, Chakotay spots a man’s face in the lightening of the storm that has formed upon their arrival.

Soon Neelix is attacked by a hawk and is beamed back to the ship out of harms way. Tuvok soon finds some structures that resemble the same ancient structures Chakotay saw as a kid. Intrigued, their search indicates that the inhabitants of these structures are still nearby and Chakotay believes that these inhabitants might see them as a threat. After the away team lay down their weapons, the inhabitants begin to make their way out only for another freak story to begin. The storm causes the team to rush back to their shuttle but the group is separated before Tuvok can beam them all off safely causing Chakotay to be left behind.

On the ship Paris finds no sign of the shuttle and Janeway decides, since they can’t beam down, the only way to find Chakotay is to land the ship. Soon however, the ship finds itself in a cyclone preventing it’s landing and endangering the ship itself.

On the surface Chakotay soon find his way back to the camp of the ‘Rubber Tree People’. Remembering his past experience, he dresses in a robe and takes shelter in a cave to weather out the storm hoping to communicate with the aliens. Soon the aliens appear each baring similar tattoos to Chakotay himself. Unfortunately they only speak the language of the Rubber Tree People and Chakotay struggles to remember any of the language from his youth. When the aliens see that he is struggling, they use a universal translator to communicate and are shocked to learn he is human. Referring to him as one of the Inheritors, Chakotay learns that the aliens were responsible for helping early Native Americans to form a society and the aliens were saddened to hear that these people have since been decimated. Chakotay assures the ‘Sky Spirits’ that the current inhabitants have changed their ways and that Voyager is among those who are peaceful once again. Freeing voyager, the ‘Sky Spirits’ give Chakotay as much polyferanide as they can but it is not as much as the ship needs. Chakotay is grateful and thanks the Sky Spirits for their generosity, returning to the ship after finally hearing his father’s answer he has been seeking so long for in his vision quests.

Story B Doctor Heal Thyself:

After seeing Ensign Wildman and exhibiting less than acceptable bed side manner, Kes challenges the Doctor to experience illness for himself in the hopes it will make him more humble.

Returning to sickbay soon-after, Kes is shocked that the Doctor has ‘infected’ himself with a 24 hour Levodia flu. However soon she finds out that he is not doing it to make himself more caring but to show people that it is easy to tough it out. After treating Neelix’ injuries from the Hawk it is soon apparent that the flu is giving him more problems than he had expected but the Doctor manages to keep his decorum despite his misery.

Soon the Doctor is shocked that his flu program is lasting longer than he expected causing him to panic in his misery. Desperate he worries that he is dying but, when he learns that Kes added a few hours to the simulation, he realizes that he might have been acting rather rash toward his patients suffering.

Is this a ‘Good’ Episode:

All we really know about Chakotay so far is that he is a former Maquis Captain who has a Native American heritage that he holds very dearly. His heritage is as much a part of him as the tattoo on his forehead but it seems that this was not always the case. As a Youth, Chakotay made it clear that he had no interest in his heritage or the lessons his father offered. Soon he makes it clear he wants to separate himself not only mentally but physically from his father and their heritage by joining with Star Fleet further damaging he and his father’s relationship. It is not until his own people, including his father, is killed in the battle for the abandoned planets along the Cardassian neutral zone that Chakotay fully embraces his heritage and his place in life. It seems, however, it is too late for him to make amends with his father who is killed in one of the battles with the Cardassians. Marking himself with a forehead tattoo in honor of his father, Chakotay then decides to try to find a connection with his late father knowing that it may not ever happen. Interestingly he finally finds it some Seventy Thousand light years from home.

Is it me or does Papa Chakotay have an Indiana Jones Vibe going on here?

To me, this episode is not only about the self discovery of Chakotay and his connection with his past, but how many of us push aside our heritage and culture only to find ourselves returning to our ‘roots’ eventually. For some reason human’s have an affinity for the past and, while sometimes it is to our detriment, there is a lot to learn from it.

One other aspect I love about this episode is that this one of Star Trek’s answers to the Ancient Aliens theory. In that theory it is believed that beings from another planet were responsible for the meteoric rise of civilization, with humans ‘suddenly’ gaining knowledge that was previously unheard of. While STNG addressed the reason why most aliens look humanoid in the lackluster episode The Chase we have never really addressed the idea of Human Culture being influenced by aliens until now. Now this is clearly not the same alien race that influenced the Egyptians or anyone else on the other side of the planet but at least we know where the Native Americans came from right?

The B Story is a fun one that gives the Doctor some rather fun moments but honestly it could have fit in with any other episode as a B story so I am not sure why it was shoehorned into this one. Don’t get me wrong it was fun but not really necessary even knocking the balance off a bit with it’s humor. That being said, we do learn that Kes is pretty devious.

Overall, this is a pretty solid episode that explains something that no one ever really wondered about but in a way that actually works. I mean, I never really cared how Chakotay got his tattoo or why but hey, it makes for a good story after all.

Gleanings and Cool Bits:

X photon torpedoes fired, 37 remaining.

0 Shuttles lost, 5 remaining. Technically the shuttle might have been lost but I am erring on the assumption that it was recovered.

We see Ensign Wildman again, the baby is doing fine.

Neelix seems to be afraid of thunder storms.

We find that Neelix and Tuvok have a connection in their love of horticulture. Both grow Orchids,for vastly different reasons…

We find out that Captain Sulu was the sponsor for Chakotay connecting Voyager’s commander to the original series.

It is implied that, in Chakotay’s memories, they are in the South American rain-forest but the tribesmen they find are clearly alien in nature. It is never really explained how these tribesmen remained on earth for so long unseen.

He stated that when he saw the driveway that he cut from behind the bus to turn in then realized from the skidding that he turned in front of a car. I was told by his insurance company (USAA) that witnesses not listed on the police report could not be used, but his friend is not on the police report and they are waiting for her statement. NC State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The driver was apologetic and admitted several times around a number of people that he must have blanked out or was daydreaming from the frustration of the school bus. USAA is saying that they need to make sure that my daughter was not 1% at fault, meaning speeding perhaps. The officer estimated her speed at impact at around 40 mph and the speed limit is 55mph. She hit the drivers back tire of his Jeep Wrangler (small truck) causing him to rest in a small trench or ditch ion the side of the attempted driveway. The front passenger side above the front tire and the front by the headlight is damaged on her car. She tried to avoid him, protect her younger sister (13) and avoid veering to much left in fear of hitting the school bus. My girls were terrified when I arrived 15 minutes after the accident. USAA stated that she may have had time to instanly stop, but she tried everything that she could do. In my opinion, she should have never been put into that situation. USAA is saying that points of contact are off, but my insurance agent said that she hit the back tire because a Jeep Wrangler is only 5 ft long and he was not towing a boat or driving a common sized vehicle. In 2004, I saw a car that I wanted to buy at a Nissan car dealership and I took out a loan. At the time I didn't know anything about insurance. It was all greek to me. I was very young and had no one to help me out. Anyway, I went to American Family Insurance and the agent seemed very nice. I told him that I wanted to buy this car and before I could finalize everything I had to show proof that I had full coverage on the vehicle. He told me that I most definitely had to get full coverage and I signed the paperwork, gave him a check and my insurance coverage started. I NEVER CHANGED MY COVERAGE!! (Let me make that clear). So 1.5 years later my car slid on the ice and another lady thought she could speed to get around me and she instead hit me. The officer stated that none of us were at fault because I was sliding when I should have been in control of my car and she should have never tried to pass me so we would each be responsible for our own damage. Right away I called my agent and he later called me back and stated I didn't have collision coverage and I would have to pay out of pocket for my damage. Again, I didn't know anything about insurance and I had totally forgotten that collision was required so I believed this guy. I left it at that but was very upset with him because he stated that I didn't have collision coverage and I told him that as a professional insurance agent, he should have told me that I needed full coverage on this practically new car!!! So, 6 months later, it was still bothering me and I left him. The car wasn't drive-able (I had to pay $600 just to fix something with the wheel mount) and then it was drive-able but there are dents in the car and damage that equals $2,000 to fix. That may sound cheap to some of you but it isn't to me. Just 3 days ago, I was telling this story to someone and they told me that I should have had full coverage on the vehicle and I should look into this. I called American Family and a lady is doing some investigating because she could see I had insurance on my car in 2004 but didn't know what kind. But, she confirmed that my car was under a lien and the insurance agent would be required to put me on a full coverage in the state of Wisconsin. So, this lady stated she would call me back on Saturday. In a perfect world, she could state either 1). You had collision coverage at that time and your car will be fixed at our expense or 2.) Your agent never put you on full coverage. Come Saturday, what if she says that it turns out my agent never put me on full coverage? Isnt he at fault? Everyone (including their own company) states he should have known to put me on full coverage! So, can I try suing the company? Im thinking even though the lady was really nice and told me that my insurance agent should have known better that Ill hear something from them stating that their computer system shows that I was a client in 2004, but they dont know what type of coverage I was on. A Key to Happiness, #2

This is my second post on the subject, just so you know, at the time of writing this I'm a 19 year old with no girlfriend, not studying, 6 hours a week at a job, and am laying in bed at 2:38 in the morning! Haha So, I'm very sorry if I come across like I'm an awful Socrates wannabe, I think these things are interesting and worth it, for me, to just I guess, shoot out into the world. The theme of this post here is going to be a bit of a peculiar and potentially controversial one, It's all my opinions on depression, our perception of depression and sadness, and then what effect our perception has on depression and sadness. I'd like to reiterate again, I'm no professional, I'm no neurospecialist, psychologist or social therapist, this is just me finding the whys and whats from my own experiences in life, let me kick it off. Deep Sadness and depression are unfortunately very mesmerizing predicaments, and are hard to describe to those who haven't experienced it, forcing your mind to focus on negatives, draining energy, good things becoming effort, and seemingly helplessly making friends appear as enemies. Although, I'd like to put a pause right there and say now, that is what depression has done for me. It might be different for those of you reading this and have gone through it, continuing however.. The thought I have often is that emotion is a spectrum, with the right most side of the spectrum being positively explosively happy as can be, the left most side being depressed to a degree of utmost miserable conditions, I think most people live around 6, and that's lovely. Now thinking of our scale, with it becoming sad when we reach about 3, I see plenty of people give in to it, allowing their minds the notion that they are in fact sad, that they are in fact hurt. In my opinion, this takes plenty of people from a 4 or 3, to a 2, hopefully needless for me to say, many people experiencing such sadness have a right to express it, if it helps, and many people will devolve a 2 whether they express it or not, that's a situation of their circumstances and variables. So to clarify, I believe, condemning yourself, admittance of sadness can act as a catalyst, allowing it to grow, in a way, even if everybody knows it to be true. My reasoning for this goes along with the thought that, the more you think of your fear of the darkness, the scarier the darkness gets, more or less. And for me, the more I think of sad things, the more reason I have to be sad, and like a recurring cycle, I get sadder, which makes me think about me being sad, which makes me sadder. Of course, there are reasons I was sad in the first place right? And those are almost always understandable, such reasons for sadness are relative and very few reasons prevent somebody from being allowed to be sad (I'm looking at you rich kids who get a $400k Car and complain about the colour). This goes hand in hand with a few other things, When people ask 'How are ya' as you see them at the checkout, You don't go and tell them your questions queries and quarrels, you say "Im doing well thanks, how are you?", or something of the kind, of course this is mainly for the sake of not plaguing some poor kid with your problems, but I feel like for me, it's also in the interest of "I think and so I am". I've always disliked the comments of "If you're sad, just be happy", that's about the furthest thing from achievable and being in such a state, there always seems to be logical reasons why, and that's why its hard, but I do believe in the human minds' ability to self-correct tendencies like that, I feel as though we're losing the awareness of that capability in current and coming generations who endorse talking about problems, medications, and support. Another disclaimer, talking about problems can help a world, I am here after all aren't I, but within the context, you're keeping sad thoughts on your mind instead of good ones. Medications can be helpful and the wonders of science allow us to correct the wrongs done by our mind when we get to such low levels on our emotions spectrum, but I feel as though people give in to the belief that they're needed to overcome sadness, that's an interesting thing in iself, medications are great, but should never be a first, or even second course of action. Let yourself have a shot at overcoming it first. Support is pretty bloody great but a prime example is, If its night time and Im feeling sad, I'd message a friend and we'd talk about it, and that's all good, I'd go to sleep and wake up the next day, happy as can be, and then my friend woukd message me and ask how I'm feeling about the things we hd discussed, back on my mind, right? Now In saying that, knowing my friend is asking because they care 99% of the time outweighs the negative that is, that item being on my mind. Just an example though. Anyway, for the longest time it was why I disliked Tumblr, it had always been very pro-mental illness, very pro-support, and that is lovely on the surface, and quite frankly support is an amazing amazing thing to have because it's nice to know if you fail, you've always got that cushion, but Tumblr at large didn't have any consideration into the ability to overcome problems as an individual. These are little quotes I made up just so you know, but as an idea I always envision tumblr quotes being "Things will be okay ♡", implying things are not, whereas a better comment might be "Just keep pushing through, call it a challenge", opening their mind to the idea that, this is an achievable obstacle, that this is in progress, that they can still win, and that they'll push through if they allow themselves to. Now.. plenty of this is in regards to that sadness of number 3 on our little spectrum, the stave at which, I believe, plenty of people I see online allow themselves to fade towards 2, unaware, or underestimating their ability to instead increase. With the above segment, as a key for happiness? I would say, limit yourself from acceptance of depression, I hear, I see too many people saying they're depressed, when they're sad, when they're in a weekend long rut. I know, I feel your pain, life is shit sometimes, but seeing yourself as clinically worse, will make you worse. Don't say you have it, don't look up symptoms and give in to the idea you have it, I see all these people on tumblr seeing sad posts and saying same, all these sad things, accepting it, or psychological 'facts' pages being reblogged, you just don't have to let yourself think "I'm injured". If you were in a desert and ran out of water, what good does saying "I have no water" do. Of course sadness is no desert, and saying something may bring help, so hey, if you're feeling sad, and you've understood the reasoning behind everything I've said so far, then don't for a second forget to say hey, can even come say it to me if you like. Now let's say you were sad, then you started telling your friends you were sad, then they started commenting on your sadness as you got better, then you stayed sad, and you're now stuck in a rut. Pretty shitty shoes, no doubt people have been there, you've gone from a 3 to a 2, or less, what do we do about that? Well, to my understanding there is no denying depression is a hardline mental condition, with plenty of neurological effects happening that simply should not be, and for those of you Im talking about, the tumblr folk, you'll know that fact all too well, probably seen it circling around a few times. But, Don't think of these things as static facts, as things that cannot be changed without external imput, this whole post is ramblings and chicken scratchings of thoughts but if I know one thing, nothing is fixed. Alright so, you're depressed, you've been there for a while, you can't seem to be consistently cheered up, you've had a shot at just being happy, even faking happy all the time, getting active, and to no avail, we're still in this rut. What I'm going to say is, take a big breather, innnn, and ouut, then we're going to think about what's best, pretty hard to do while you're in that state of mind hey? Well I always like to think of why, so whats causing it, maybe you need somebody to talk with, you need something to occupy your mind, or need something to clear it? Psychologist, vacation, or sabatical. These are just a few things, but the thought I have is, everything has a solution, and I encourage you to try it. Now the following words I'm going to say are dangerous, because it's the same words that elements of Tumblr use that let some readers think "I better just wait for that to happen and then get better". I think depression in most cases, can only be helped with an external push, for several, several months of applications, I couldn't find a job, I had no social life, and I dreaded the few few parties I attended because of the question, "So what are you up to now?", and one night I really just snapped, and I applied to 20 jobs, stayed up late just fed up and sick of it, and then a few days letter, I got this external push, it was one of those jobs. I was sad at times but, that push really helped me out, I think without it life was pretty flat. In the same way, a negative thing can be an external push too! I got fired from the job, and a very amazing person in my life came along and pushed me into gear as I'm having a little breakdown a week later, and just like that I decided to start at university. So, the point I make is sometimes life is like a rollercoaster, and when you get to the high points, sometimes you've got to go through the low ones, and that's okay, it can be shitty, but we learn, and we get better. I encourage those of you who are sad to take a breather and think three thoughts in this order, "What are my problems", "Can I fix them and how", and then "What makes me happy that I can do or look forward to", just work on that positivity and that problem solving, before you let yourself worry about getting into a rut, or becoming plagued with depression. It won't work everytime, but at least some of the time it'll help you. And to those with depression, whether you are 18 or 80 You have walked this path for a time, you've overcome obstacles, boundaries, dilemmas and predicaments, whether it is today, tomorrow, in a week or in a month, that depression is going to shrivel away and you'll come out like a ray of hope for everybody, especially yourself. Until then, take your time, don't forget to take a breather, and don't forget that it's always going to be alright to get something that'll get you a smile without any harm. Couple of sidenotes: It's not up to me, or you, or anybody but the person experiencing such emotions to decide how they are, as their friend, all I can say is, do as they ask if it can help, be there for them, and don't do any of the shit I mention here for them, if they don't want to, that's not your call to make, I've had to learn that, it's weird. I know as I wrote the line "To those with depression", there is likely to be a number of people who would whole heartedly believe thats them, not knowing that they are in fact, not depressed, but that is their call to make, I just encourage them in knowing that depression is sadness, but sadness is not depression, make the right call, really. We're all on the same team, fighting the same fight, this entire post is me overthinking stuff, fundamentally just look after one another, all you gotta do.
