#genuinely felt like i was maybe mental and had read something completely different from everyone else #this is about the m*llion kisses in your lifetime book #before anyone screams. i read it without knowing anything about it and because it was in the library. which. mortified. #anyways dhsbdjsgfjd #ignoring all the s*xual *ssault :) and bullying :) and general shitness. the book was just fucking borimg as hell #the most bland characters and storyline ive ever encountered #but its so popular!! not to mention it has a whole fucking series for each of the dudes DOUBLY boring and underwheing brothers. its sickeni #but yeah i watched a vid where someone basically just said that the dude was weird and boring too and it made my heart sing like Thank You #le text post #second book that i wasnt going to mentiom because i think this one is definitely more popular and generally accepted #like it isnt just the romance book community if you get me #but while im here i might as fucking well #anyways. uprooted. was so looking forward to it. again not knowing anything going in #and it was decent but the romance?? was so unnecessary and honestly sort of ruined the book for me? also the plot of the book felt #So stretched out and then in the LAST chapter you get all this info dumped like what the hell #it just had so much potential #anyways yet again i watched a vid and the person basically said the same thing and again i was like. can i ask your thoughts on the fandom’s heavy focus on louis as an object of desire? it sometimes feels to me like people are more interested in other characters reacting to louis than they are in louis himself. i know the “helen of troy” stuff is a joke but it genuinely seems like he’s often rendered oddly passive in his desirability, like we’re looking at him through the eyes of the other characters even though it’s his story (to be clear: in the fandom, not the actual show). or am i being uncharitable? either way, you always have interesting things to say about fandom reception.

i think the focus of louis as an object of desire arose largely in response to a lot of racially-charged nonsense about show louis, namely, where a loud minority of fans tried to deny the abuse and horror of season 1 and frame louis as the primary antagonist/abuser of his own story. which in of itself had the potential to go somewhere, especially considering the feminized role louis occupies in parts of season 1. unfortunately its spiraled off into its own dead end at this point to where now people, a year and a half removed from the release of s1, can box louis's character arc into this tale of getting all the hot boys to look her way. when this is a horror and tragedy series. romance is part of that, but is a piece of the full picture. classic romance is very much horror tbh but thats just me

if we're discussing the show strictly, majority of louis's relationships are antagonistic. even with his lovers, they love him as much as they seek to control him. 'his love is a small box that he keeps you in', trailer louis saying 'i knew who i was without those pieces [of myself?]' . so on and so forth. the first three episodes of season 1 are about louis's struggle to maintain a link with his mortal community, in the midst of increasing racist tensions against the city leaders, all as he struggles to come to terms with his existence as a vampire and how his relationship to lestat fits in relation to all these pieces of himself. doubly so, there is also the nature of the second interview in present time, and the sort of antagonism between daniel + louis as louis eventually pushes daniel into burning the old tape. the latter half of season 1, episodes 4-7 is squarely about the triad of lestat, louis, and claudia, how lestat increasingly tightens his hold over them both, claudia breaking them free of it, and louis's response to such. doubly so, daniel becomes more hostile the less he knows, and the more louis's composed 'master of his instincts' personage collapses to show the broken man thats underneath. armand comes in at the end bc the interview has reached a breaking point once more [as it did in the 1970s]. i know, im looking too hard into the meme, but so much of where louis errs, where his memory falters, where history is completely revised, has to do with the question of claudia. even book interview foundationally was about this grief, though not nearly with the level of depth+ gravity the show has added to the story.

where focusing on louis as an 'object of desire' most impedes analysis has to do with claudia as well, bc if u see louis as that solely, then what is claudia to u if not a 'child interfering in [louis's] romantic affairs'? why are people already seeking to write claudia off as a wayward child unduly 'taking out her anger on louis', when it was louis at the end of season 1 who strangled her against the wall and refused to let her burn lestat? when its louis in the trailer thats throwing claudia's words from season 1 back at her, evading her questions in the cafe? when claudia is having to dress as a baby doll and advertise with a sandwich board for a theater + a coven-master that all want her dead?

i think this is by nature of the fact that iwtv is canonly gay and isnt afraid of showing that, and modern fandom is mainly interested in romance. claudia's relationship to louis is secondary, if not tertiary, to all 'camps' of this tiny tiny fandom bc she is clearly established in s1 as not being a viable romantic option for louis, despite claudia's perspective and her story taking up the second half of the first season, and will continue to be important in the second season. the 'helen of troy' fixation on his desirability in relation to romantically viable vampires [or even men] seems to be another means by which fans can ignore this part of the story, just as the mutual abuse nonsense about louis being clarence thomas the third self hating black man who stole lestat's lunchables and is 'just as bad as the rest' drowned out and continues to drown out any other conversation for the past year and a half. it is very difficult to have conversations on this character precisely bc of this state of fandom, where many people seek to crack the whip over a fictional character for not being mother teresa and having a complex response to trauma, then instead of discussing that, some seek to fixate on the fact that mother teresa can be sexy, actually. when thats not the point. why is modern louis so full of grief and all but suicidal in dubai, if not for the fact that claudia is permanently dead, he still lives, he regrets something, and wants to find the truth under it all? the jokes are cute and all, but lets put our thinking caps on.

i hate when characters get reverted just to retell the same story. like its doubly insulting. and its pretty much what tillie did with clem. and its BORING!!! and i just have to reiterate again that its also laughable. its just....painful honestly 💀 the plot is boring the characters are boring clem is a mess and her pre-existing (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT) relationships to characters from the game are basically non-existent. and we're not having any INTERESTING discussions!!! what are the themes what are the messages what is tillie trying to say here? im getting a big load of reused character arcs and what feels new falls flat on its face. clem isnt even a shadow of her former self shes a different character entirely. and she is crying waaaay too much. shes got the anger of S3 clem and not even a Fraction of the emotional regulation S1 clem had. and she was 8 then....

and her naming her prosthetic 'kenny' is fucking stupid

ive seen some people say that it would actually be an interesting comic if clem was removed from the story but i dont agree. its fucking lame and boring. i love the zombie setting for the stories it allows a writer to tell. for the emphasis on character it allows. and this is probably the most boring piece of zombie related media ive ever laid my eyes on. this definitely feels like it was written by a romance writer trying to figure out how the zombie setting Works as a storytelling device. with a beloved preexisting character that theyre Also trying to find the voice of. and we're watching it in real time. and its Painful.....

S4 will Always be the True end to clementines story. its too perfect. and it also marked the end of telltale. it was a love letter to the series. its very fitting for both clem as a character but also as a last goodbye from a beloved studio. the still not bitten teams signatures on the hallway walls always gets a sob outta me. that final goodbye... clem was meant to spend the rest of her days at ericsons with the community she helped cultivate. ive said it a million times but her losing her leg is Symbolic. the first episode isnt titled "done running" for no reason. clem never Liked being on the road. all she ever wanted was a safe place to call home. with people she trusted and loved. and now the comics are retconning all of that just to retell the same story but Badly. why should i give a shit about that?

whats unfortunate is that i DO think there are still things that could be explored with a post S4 clem. shes got what she wanted: a home. (relative) safety. community. however she has new limitations due to her injury. how would she adjust to this? after spending so many years on the road? after having to do so much independently? only having herself to rely on for the most part? these are the goals im trying to achieve with my own short little fic (that ive been working on for too long):

she would never Want to leave ericsons. home is what shes been looking for since S1. but now that shes Safe. now that she can turn off survival mode a little bit and actually Relax for once. shes going to begin Processing EVERYTHING shes been through up until this point. the true healing starts Now. but she cant run from it. so how would she reconcile these things? the whole point of ericsons was that they were a community of traumatized kids who found love and support in each other when they had nothing else. aj says it himself (S4 is Very clear in its messaging). THAT is the perfect setting for clem to ALSO have this grieving/acceptance process that she Desperately needs. everything shes been through up until this point is going to hit her like a truck. the true healing starts NOW. shes no longer fighting for her life 25/8. and when the brain can get out of survival mode it begins True processing mode.

one of the issues with the comics is that it puts her BACK into survival mode. but of clems own choosing! no matter how much her processing hurts and no matter how much she could want to run from those feelings, she has always wanted True Community more than Anything. having to reconcile those feelings is interesting! i Do think tillie is trying to have some of these conversations. but they all fall flat. her understanding of clem as a character is weak. and the environment shes in is not conducive to the healing process she wants clem to have. its a mess. i will always stand firmly in the camp that these comics should have taken place in the gap between seasons 3 and 4. that change alone wouldve boosted the comic. but unfortunately they chose.....This

Two mini reviews, partly brought to you by tumblr autosaving - Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. I wasn't sure what to expect; I really liked The Sunbearer Trials (Ive not yet read the sequel), and DNF'd Lost In The Never Woods because it was the wrong type and intensity of dark and spooky for me at the time. Cemetery Boys is a freaking delight. Maybe my least favourite part was the villain reveal, it made sense but either it wasnt foreshadowed enough or I just wanted better for that character? idk. But this isnt primarily a plot book, its a romance, and its a story about community and acceptance, and figuring out how you fit into the world when you're not the shape you're expected to be. And it did really well with both those aspects. I also appreciate that with so many stories, real and fictional, about people who have to leave their communities to find themselves, I appreciate a story of someone who never once thinks maybe I need to leave, and instead forges on to create space for himself in his community and his heritage. That's not everyone's story and thats totally fine. Our experiences are diverse and we deserve diverse stories. Its all good. As for the romance, its really believable. Its quite an opposites-attract situation, from Julian's aggressive queerness and non-issue with Yadriel's transness making his albeit and unexpected presence a breath of fresh air to Yadriel, to their growing understanding of each other's lives and admiration for the strength of each others convictions. (When Julian is upset about his friends and Yadriel nevertheless pauses to set that boundary about ghost-safety, that was hot.). And the ghost aspect! (this is not a mini review anymore lol). I was not really sure how that was going to go, and then cheering for them, and then wondering what the heck they were gonna do about ongoing ghost-itude and the finiteness of that situation, and actually I really liked how it went. The romance and how they push each other and grow to understand each other is fun, romantic, sexy, heartfelt. Remarkably sexy given that one of them is a ghost who cant be touched. (Spoilers for a sec - the scene on the car where Yadriel reaches for Julian's jacket to pull him closer and there's nothing there to grab? Oh that feels like grief.) The book is quite a bit about grief. Missing parents, missing support networks, missing opportunities to be yourself and be accepted. Its about a guy who can communicate with ghosts and its set around Dia de Meurtos, there's grief themes.

I also really love Maritza, showing off another aspect of (gender) non-conformity, that its not only trans people who have trouble fitting fairly strict defined roles. (Julian's friends do so similarly). Almost all the Spanish I picked up from context, but how Julian refers to Yadriel at the end I knew I had to look up that word specifically and oh my heart. Overall really enjoyed. probably 9/10 second, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. I havent read the books/comics, I have seen the movie. This show....for at least the first half I had no idea what the rules of the universe were or what exactly was going on or what themes exactly were being explored. I was definitely entertained though. The last few episodes manage to make sense of the first few and deliver on those themes in ways I quite liked. I liked that Ramona is the "manic pixie dream girl" and then almost immediately gets upstaged for that role by Envy Addams. I normally am annoyed at stories in which some boring guy "gets" the manic pixie dream girl and certainly doesn't appreciate her - you know the kind who goes on reddit and complains that she wont stop talking about slugs or decorates their whole house in anime? And I know scott pilgrim is a comment on that trope. I like how its about scott but its not really about scott. Largely its about Ramona and her friends (and her exes). And the others recognise that scott isnt so great, or so smart, and also that if Ramona likes him thats cool. He can be a "lovable idiot" and shes not automatically making a mistake with him. If they're happy they're happy. (and of course the ways that *could* go wrong, but arent destined to). Plus the music is fun, the visuals are bright and pretty. It might lean overstimulating for some people, I had to stop and think about my spoon levels between episodes. Thats what I got for today. Two very different fun stories I recommend like 8-9/10, not perfect but a damn good ride.

but other than that, im very friendly with new people and friends, im very open and try very hard not to be intimidating, because as an antisocial and socially anxious person ik how it feel when talking to knew people,, im definitely more confident over social media and texts than i am in person.

once finished ,, he turned to look up at you. the lights never once stopped swirling ,, a soft hum coming from robot as he awaited for your reaction. laid there in the dirt had been a mishapened flower ,, the one just a little bit in front of you two.

are  you  like  your  muse(s) :  in  a  way,  yes.  there  has  to  be  that  initial  connection,  source  to  tap  into  for  me.  though  everyone  can  pretty  much  right  anyone,  i  feel  it’s  more  engaging  for  me  personally  if  i  can  tap  into  a  character’s  feelings.  though  i  can  hardly  relate  to  jane’s  experiences  in  the  lab,  i  can  understand  the  feelings  and  try  to  tap  into  it  that  way.  i  think  the  muse  i  connected  with  most  has  been  her,  dan  torrance  and  carl  grimes  because  of  their  rough  childhoods  and  having  to  grow  up  in  traumatic  conditions.  writing  them  has  actually  helped  me  throughout  the  years  with  coming  to  terms  w.  my  own  trauma.

I find it very interesting how y'all keep reducing peoples problem with the tiktokfication of publishing to people complaining about 1) bad quality novels that have always existed, 2) people being too online, or 3) literally just exaggeration.

First of all, most of the people I see acknowledging this issue have been, overwhelming, authors of color who are seeing how this platform is further exacerbating the constant elevation of the mediocrity of white creators who are not JUST bad writers but writers who are literally having their hands held to even create something in the first place. And not only that, but having to see these very people talk about it like its something to be proud of; to flaunt this kind of mediocrity. That's incredibly frustrating and infuriating as a creator of color to see this be blatantly thrown in your face when publishing will give any excuse except a blatantly racist one to reject you now a days. So, I think that's a pretty fucking legitimate concern to be expressing ones opinion about.

Secondly, some people talking about this arent even ON tik tok (myself included) but can literally see the effect this is having on the books they're being advertised or recommended, especially even the FURTHER deterioration of the writing and especially ideas, that is going into these things. Even people like me, who've been avid readers of the genres the tiktokification is centralized around, specifically romance heavy genres, can see there is ABSOLUTELY a difference in how these things are being written. Yes, romance shlock is a tried and true market, but I could at least read schlock that was legitimately entertaining and respected me as a reader who's a grown fucking person. Shlock that at least had out of the box ideas no matter how batshit despite failure in execution but exhibited a sense of SOME kind of writing experience or consideration for writing as a craft behind it, instead of like 4 fan fiction tropes taped and held together by writing equivalent to 3 pieces of chewed up gum and absolutely bizare sense of infantilism towards its readers.

Plus you guys can go on and on about being too online but like creators no matter how small, LITERALLY have to be online and in these spaces because an unfortunate reality of being a creator in this hellscape is that most of your revenue and building of a community of people who like your work IS ONLINE. Of course, not all of us agree with the means one has to take to get any kind of traction the likes of booktokers in writing or other art circles online, but its inevitable thing to have to be aware of. Like it's sad to fucking say, but a lot of making an art your career has always been networking, and being online is a reality and branch of that.

Not to mention it's not an exaggeration to bemoan the constant feeling so many of us are having in this day and age with the state of art across mediums and the effects capitalism is having on them. Perhaps it's silly to you to focus on "low brow" genres but like isnt it telling that even "low brow" genres are also feeling the effect? Like low brow art doesnt exempt it from having a kind of soul put into it as well from its creators. What does it say that even the literary equivalent of eating a bag of potato chips feels soulless or dispassionate? Potato chips feel comforting and indulgent, this new shit feels like eating cardboard....

maaaaaan. im reading this silly stupid lesbian romance book from the library as one does and having a hehe haha fun time but. idk. we’re in such interesting times with books and social media and discourse of respectability politics and immediate engagement and conversations.

theres a clear detachment while reading ‘classics’ that were originally serialized and pondering the introductions where a modern author talks about critics of that day and this leads you to the original author’s wiki tab about essayists they spared with and going to THEIR wikis etc etc and now youre down a rabbit hole of 1880s marxist discourse. and back to reading the actual text of the ‘classic’ where a character turns to the audience to say something boring and stupid that sparked the whole conversation and youre like this is all so fucking silly nearly 150 years later when im not living it.

and now youre reading a modern silly sloppy book and a character turns to the camera says something inflammatory and outrageous and you know immediately that the author runs in certain circles, for better or worse, and wants you the reader to know this and either completely blanket agree or get da hell out of here! and i put down the book and immediately open twitter, instagram, the authors own webpage and get a vibe check. its all just so surreal. everything changes and everything stays the same. and published works will always be having a conversation at someone vs with bc its already published and over. but i can see in real time what the author is up to now. so weird!!!!

anyways the thing that sparked this is a 22 year old fictional lesbian from small town indiana usa (written by a bi nb person from michigan usa) who, when another lesbian said, in reference to herself AND IN JEST, she isnt queer, og girl said queer is not a slur and if you think its a slur its bc you fell for terf ideology and you arent in community with trans people. 🤨 im going to keep reading it bc free and fun but thats just sitting so heavy on my mind like ???? what did i, little ol me, do to you lmao. im trans and dont like it lol. sigh. interesting times to be alive though

im truly about to go full literary analysis mode on my story for you because roxy and dak's relationship is so important to me and all the things i've built up in my head that aren't evident in the story because roxy is bad at dealing with her emotions (as we know, she loves to push aside her own when it gets too much to bear... i just love to use "she pushed the thought out of her mind" as a scene turning point and then it turned into a fact about her on her silly character trait list🙄) and because some things will be present we haven't got there in the plot yet

please find my thoughts under the cut... there are lots and i cannot wait to further incorporate it into my writing once this ball really gets rolling

first off, roxy has never been in a relationship before, which is something she is pretty insecure about, especially as someone who primarily deals in writing love songs. while this isn't really an issue now, seeing as she's currently on the path to one, we haven't really seen this as something that bothers her. because of this, she really doesn't know how a healthy one works outside of the romance books she reads and rom-coms she loves. in those, everything just happens organically, the two people involved work though everything together and it looks completely effortless. she sees this with her friends as well, kendall and jo almost immediately fell for each other, and now all jo is waiting for is for them to make it official that they're together. she doesn't have to deal with strange teen jealousy or the guy she likes standing her up. camille and logan, while still working though their own thing, at their core gravitate to each other. from the way they interact, talk about each other, whatever, roxy knows that they'll find their way to each other eventually. because of this, she's terrified to bring up her own troubles - partly because it's embarrassing and partly because she doesn't want to be a bother about it to people who "so clearly" get it. if she can't bring up her worries to her best friends, she sure as hell isn't gonna bring it up to dak... and heaven forbid she brings it up to the guys because at this point, they all hate him.

perhaps... this will make roxy realize some things shes looking for in a partner... and perhaps... it will give her an image of what its like to date a famous person...

second off, dak is there to establish her type LMAOOO. we know he's pretty, we know james is pretty, all the posters in her room are of pretty people, and once we learn more about mag, we will learn he is pretty. roxy loves a pretty, pretty, PRETTY person! she's like a crow attracted to shiny things. this is also a byproduct of the books, movies, and other media she regularly consumes. she was supposed to love boy bands and not come out a changed woman? okay...

third off, for someone who thinks she's so in tune with her emotions because she's a songwriter she sure is freaking oblivious to those of the people around her. not only that, she's built some pretty solid schemas of her friends and their pasts based on very little information, considering they don't share all that much since they know literally everything about each other. so MAYBE if someone just TOLD HER many chapters ago that they FELT some type of WAY for her she might not even be in this situation to begin with... if only there were a major turning point in their lives that was about to occur that would not only bring them closer together, but would also let their journey occur for many months throughout the united states without any internet access so they have to like actually talk and hang out and do things unrelated to work and the palm woods... hmmm

anyway... dak and roxy's relationship is important and not just because i wanted to write a long story. thanks for reading :) i love to talk and talk and talk

1. I feel like when RS was drafting this story she wanted Hades and Persephone to be on a united front with dealing with their issues and conflicts instead of having conflicts with one another to get over to make them look “perfect”. However the flaw with that, is when the outside characters (Minthe, Hera, Hecate, Thanatos, etc) criticize their relationship were not proven they’re wrong. Thanatos said it was nepotism and it was. Not only is hades covering for Persephone who isn’t even working as an intern just sitting cozy in his office while she’s wanted for the police, but staying at his place also. Shady much? Minthe knew something was up with Persephone and she was more than right, not only does she train Persephone the day after Persephone kisses her ex she learns that Persephone commuted a genocide. Hecate and Hera are worries for Persephone for her reputation and being young and naive. Persephone is young and naive and can’t make friends at school because hades took some kids eye out. Over and over RS proves these characters right and not make me root for the main couple because they’re just bad and for each other. And remember when Tori and the yellow girl student (from persephones class) mentioned Persephone is sleeping her way to the top? She’s just smooching her way to the top guys it’s fine. Persephone should receive punishment for killing a bunch of people, turning a nymph into a plant with more than just community service and hades should stay the hell away from Persephone. I hate how RS used “the immortal dating pool is small” excuse but that doesn’t mean a 19 year old should fix a 2000 year old man’s issues 

2. wish persephone would just be evil. shes not a girlboss if she was girlboss whys she always like "im sowwy 🥺" and "i wish i wasnt a bad girl 😭🥺" like no. just be evil. and not in the "hi im a murderer 😁" way in the "i am a fully fleshed out character that has complicated actions and can stand on my own 😐" way.

3. just off how many LO episodes there are now, and if they roughly follow the same 25 episode count for each volume, then you'd have to buy well over SEVEN books just off the current count of 180+ eps. Seeing as it's going past 200 eps, then that's even more. now let's say you get the hardcovers, so thats over 300 dollars for all the current eps you cant easily read for free instead. more so, the art and writing gets worse the longer it goes on, so what incentive is there to buy these anyway?

4. does ... does rachel know the whole point to helios in the hxp myth was that hes the most unbiased source and will always be honest? along with him and apollo they legit cant lie. why would she purposely make him a liar? to be another stupid fake antagonist to hxp? he was one of the few people in myth who supported them?

5. what i find so annoying about lo stans is they act like critique of LO is somehow against some poor underdog and we should stop picking on her (which isnt what critique is). Rachel is NOT some nobody getting unwarranted hate for her indie project. she has millions of readers, she's a published writer, she has merch, even (minor) awards, and much more. stop acting like she's some helpless nobody who needs protection. she's a professional in the industry, not a child in of a white knight.

6. im probably wrong here but i heard someone say hebe in lo is permanently stuck as a child? tell me thats not true :(

7. i get why rachel doesnt do it because she herself cantt depict realistic couples well, but s2 hxp is so boring??? like its a romance, the conflict should be in the romance, and while the couple wasn't the source for it in s1, you get why they weren't an item because of other factors. but s2, now that theyre together, theyre just too functional, you know what i mean? they have nothing in conflict, including minthe being turned into a plant! like how did they get stale once they became a couple?

8. i just cant take any plot, relationship, or character "development" in LO seriously (esp if its the characters not being ~perfect~ and actually being realistically written) because i just know it'll be retconned in a week or two, because rachel lacks a backbone to stick to any writing choice and her fans have no sense of reading comprehension, so theyll complain and she'll bend over to appease them. the writing in lo was always weak, but its only gotten worse the more "fan input" she takes in.

9. the wild part to me is literally the majority of the issues in lo are just stuff rachel didnt need to add. she didnt need to make persephone 19. she didnt need to add in sexual assault, she didnt need to make hades a slave owner. she didnt need to add in the aow. she didnt need to add 30+ plots she cant keep track of. she didnt need to make hera a cheater. she didnt need to have apollo, leto, thetis, etc there, and it goes on. like she questions who made her write this? look in the mirror!

It really annoys me that it looks like Persephone's only concern about her SA is "Will Hades still love me even if I'm damaged? 🥺🥺”

I know that we saw her being disstressed about being pregnant because of her SA and that she said that she doesn't feel comfortable being around him but all that is just mentioned when she's around Apollo or he's mentioned somehow, we never see her feeling bad about her body as she says, nor we see her having bad days she's always happy and almost sexually available for Hades and it's never brought up unless it's for ✨the drama✨ or making Hades look like a "perfect man" for respecting her boundaries (that's just the bare minimun jfc) or just to make Hades and Persephone closer

Like jfc she was talking about her trauma and how she feels about Apollo and suddenly there's a joke about Hades wanting to kill him and then Helios appears and there's unfunny jokes about it?? Same vibe as Persephone talking about her nymphs friends death in the same episode where there's a fart joke and that "oops a maybe-underage-Perse is naked!!! So funny" scene

I just finished midnight mass bc everything you've said about it made it look really good and holy shit it was. Any recommendations for other horror type stuff ? Like books, shows, films or anything that are actually good not like, paranormal activity. Also how on earth was he dressing the vampire? In its little priest outfit like ??? The Terror (TV miniseries) - loosely based on the real-world tragedy of the lost Franklin expedition, with supernatural elements, *vibrating intensely* I like this show a normal amount

The Thing (movie) - isolation and paranoia, with body horror elements and the best special effects in cinematic history

Candyman, both the original and the remake/sequel (movies) - storytelling and honestly I'd describe it as folk horror transplanted into a city, urban legends and discussion of generational trauma specifically in terms of racial prejudice

Night of the Living Dead (movie) - THE zombie film, another spectacular work exploring race and prejudice and the tension of a group who don't trust each other

Being a hideous creature can actually be something so transgender:

Ginger Snaps (movie) - what if puberty was about werewolves and being queer? Also, the dialogue is so sharp and fun to watch

An American Werewolf In London (movie) - dark comedy, also about werewolfism

Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein (movies) - you know what Frankenstein is, I'm sure, but I really cannot overstate how much I love these movies and what they do with gender and faith

This is a ghost story (this is a love story):

The Village (movie) - all I will say about this is do Not look at any plot spoilers, and don't give up - the first half absolutely drags, but the payoff makes it so worthwhile and really effectively recontextualises it

The Crow (movie) - a gothic romance, with murder in it, and an absolutely killer soundtrack

Fun horror for gay people:

The Lost Boys (movie) - the most 80s a vampire can possibly be

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 through 3 (movies) - these start queer and get queerer, and they're... They're not good, per se, but they are some of my favourite films regardless

Death Becomes Her (movie) - it's like sort of Frankenstein??? but with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn and. Honestly I can't describe this one it's just some of the best fun I've ever had while watching a film, dark comedy and utterly joyful

Jennifer's Body (movie) - lesbian coded hashtag girl power slasher film, Megan Fox is a demon, it was so fundamentally ahead of its time even while being deeply, deeply 2000s

I'm not categorising these I just think they're genuinely perfect and I couldn't let this list go without mentioning them:

Ravenous (movie) - discourse on colonialism and the violence of the whole Westward Expansion period of US history while also being homoerotic as all hell and, again, with a fucking superb soundtrack

The Haunting of Hill House (book) - when I say "this was the worst reading experience of my entire life" I mean it as a wholehearted compliment, genuinely such a flawlessly crafted piece of horror fiction that it crawled into my brain and made me dream about it for weeks and I still think of it with fear and awe, cannot recommend it highly enough

Dracula (book) - again, I know you know what Dracula is, but I think everyone should read it at least once because no adaptation has ever captured even half of the incredible chaotic energy of the original. One of the main characters is a cowboy.

There is a whole world of amazing horror media out there!!! This is just some of my personal recs and favourites, and if you have any specific tropes or themes or anything that you'd like to see more of I'm always happy to be shouted on for recommendations :D

i didnt think the 'andy + slavery' thing was handled as badly as everyone made it out to be when telling me about it. tho from the way it was talked about i had kind of figured the conflict between andy and nile re: slavery would be really racially charged (esp considering nile is a black american and would obvs have Thoughts on the subject in that regard) but like,, done in a cringey 'a-white-guy-obviously-wrote-it' kind of way? but it wasnt that. i mean. it makes sense that andy would be implicit in slavery through the years

i mean, like she says, is that not what people just did to each other in the aftermath of battles for thousands of years? and i really like how its pointed out that it was what she was raised with (in the beginning when you see her put shackles on that guy after the battle) but she also accepts responsibility for it and acknowledges that it was wrong and not just 'what people did'.

i like how from her expressions you can kind of tell baby andy knew it was off but she sets those feelings aside bc she felt angry. it explains how she felt but didnt make her out to be blameless in it. plus i mean. i dont know, the fact that andy was involved in a lot of morally shady stuff for 7000 years is not that wild for me. if you live that long youre just Going to be involved in some shit, and she didnt even have other immortals with her as positive community influences, she literally just did whatever the fuck she wanted for thousands of years

nicky and joe's complete non-reaction to finding out noriko is alive And Evil Now is endlesly funny. they just left her on that boat and neither cared. i get book and nile not caring but joe and nicky knew her, and they just have 0 input on the subject of what to do with her

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one

also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.

on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way

tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.

anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10

The trope Last Minute Hookup shouldn’t be used for LGBTQ+ relationships.

AND DEFENDING MY LAST POST ABOUT THIS.

I DO NOT hate any of these pairings. A good many of them could have been handled differently by the creators, writers, and networks. But this isnt me hating the relationships or characters or shows. Just going off about how they shouldnt have been tacked on at the end of their respective series. 

As of writing this all of these shows have ended their original runs. Except for Supernatural which is on its last few episodes. And Supergirl, which announced its coming to end with season 6.

LGBTQ characters and relationships aren’t as common in the media as straight-cis characters and relationships. Sure things are improving but a lot of networks and writers still don’t fully understand why representation is important why they can’t keep using the same throwaway tropes they’ve been using for the straight-cis relationships.

You could name any piece of media and find and name one character that isn’t LGBTQ+, but you can’t do this with LGBTQ+ characters. We haven’t gotten to the point where they are as common as non-LGBTQ characters.

I have a whole paper I wrote on why asexual representation is important to have in the media and the same logic applies to any part of the LGBTQ+ or anything that falls under minority.

Back to the topic on hand. The trope of “Last Minute Hookup.”

Its exactly what it sounds like. Characters get to together at the very end of the story. These characters could have a on and off again relationship, lots of ship teasing, the classic “Will They or Wont They?” trope. What makes it different for non-LGBT characters in relationships to do this, we know what these relationships look like. Not to say the that both Non and LGBT relationship cant have similar struggles, however members of the LGBTQ+ community know how hard it is to feel like your identity and self matters and is normal.

I know that the whole “will they, wont they” thing is done for drama and networks and showrunners think if they give the fans what they want that they’ll start losing viewers and they have nothing to look forward to. Which is true to some degree. But most of this comes from the writers not knowing how to fucking write relationships.

Let’s just focus on whats it like to be in a non-straight relationship.

Heres an example: you have an action series, with 2 male leads and halfway through the show, they get together. Cool. Now you have a Battle Couple.

By making LGBTQ relationships happen at the end of a series that’s already had plenty of other non-LGBTQ relationships happen before it, it makes it look like the people in charge don’t care for it or were afraid of backlash. But it’s the end of the series so its not like they can get the show cancelled or anything. (The only people who are going to lash out at LGBT couple or characters are homophobic people, we don’t want them around any way so just make stuff super gay, so they’ll leave)

This is especially a problem when the writer and network have spent the whole series queerbaiting the audience with these characters.

 Side note for anyone is doesn’t actually know what queerbaiting is:

It’s a marketing technique used in entertainment, which the writer or creators hint at but then don’t actually depict sex-same romance or LGBTQ representation. They do this to attract (bait) the LGBT/queer or straight ally audience into the show with the suggestion of representation but at the same time avoiding this as not alienate other audience members *cough* (homophobes) *cough*

The Legend of Korra is a great example of Last-Minute Hookup. Korra and Asami had VERY little ship teasing, and that was in the last 2 books/seasons. Any thing that was perceived as romantic came from the fans wearing shipping goggles. So to a lot of people just casually watching, yes this looked like it came out of nowhere. Nickelodeon had some serious balls to say how brave they were for putting 2 girls into a romantic relationship.

Theres a few problems with this.

A. It never actually aired on TV (to my knowledge). The last 2 seasons of Korra were put on Nicks website.

B. The confirmation that this Korrasami was canon had to come from the creators on twitter because of how unclear it was.

C. The show did the bare minimum when it came to hooking them up in the series. They walk off holding hands (very cute btw). They didn’t even get a kiss. Aang and Katara had a Last Minute Hookup at the end of ATLA after 3 seasons of ship tease and THEY GOT A KISS. Hell the original end of LoK*, has Korra and Mako kissing. *(the first season, they didn’t know they were getting more seasons at the time, no matter what you hear the writers say, they’re full of shit)

D. Anything continuation of Korra has come in the form of comics, which her and Asami are in a fairly well written relationship. Yes, they do kiss. Yes it would’ve been great to see this stuff happen in series.

A show that handles this a little bit better is Adventure Time. Not by much though. It implied several times that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline have history together and its shown more and more in its last few seasons that there is some ship tease happening. However its not until the finale where they kiss, and they are shown in the last minute of the show cuddling together in Marcy’s house. HBO has picked up Adventure Time and has a miniseries called Adventure Time: Distant Lands, where Bubblegum and Marceline’s past relationship is shown.  

I had brought up in my original post about being upset with networks making LGBTQ+ relationships canon in the last season/episode. I originally had Catradora tagged. While Catra and Adora have history together, they did not become official couple until the end of the series.

Yes, I was wrong about the network making things canon in the last episode as they’ve always had ship tease with each other, and it probably was the writers’ intent to put them together by the end. They do technically fall under the Last-Minute Hookup, however.

I wanna talk about Once Upon a Time really quick. Fans of the show were hoping and wishing for an LGBTQ couple for the show as a lot of characters, especially Regina and Emma, have alot Ho Yay moments. The showrunners weren’t going to put those two together, for whatever reasons they may have for that (im indifferent on all the shipping going on with this show). The showrunners thought to put two characters together, and hoo boy did it not make people happy. The characters they put together are Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Ruby the red riding hood, which would be fine if they had properly been developed.

The entire episode they did this in was a mess. They stopped the current arc during the season 5 episode ‘Ruby Slippers,’ to go over the characters that haven’t been seen in years, Dorothy was introduced and last seen in season 3, and Ruby was introduced in season 1 and was last seen in season 5 before ‘Ruby Slippers’. The characters get together in the same episode the meet in and are never seen again. The characters barely interacted, barely got along, and showed little to no ship tease or interest in each other and BOOM they are in love and together aaaaaannnnndd they’re gone. Other than having One Million Moms, a Christian fundamentalist organization, protest against the show and want it taken off the air (yes this really happened). The fans weren’t please with this development of the characters either.  

(also Mulan was right there and already knew Ruby from a previous episode, and Mulan already is established to like girls as shown by her being in love with Aurora. Don’t know why the writers didn’t just put these 2 together but whatever I guess)

So they tried again in season 7 with MadArcher. The characters of Alice, a version of Alice in Wonderland from another realm (its complicated) and Robin, the daughter of Robin Hood and the Wicked Witch (it’s also complicated). And the writers did a lot better here. Both characters were allowed to have time together and have a history together too and it was done over the whole season. Not just one episode.

Now even though the writers decided to do something different with the last season and it could be detached from the previous 6 seasons, MadArcher is not really a Last Minute Hookup per say but still falls under my thing about it being the last season so who gives a fuck if One Million Moms gets mad us and tries to get us cancelled again.

 I would like to say I have never watched a single episode of Supernatural in my life. I may one day. But as of right now my knowledge of it is coming primary from what ive seen on tumblr. You know a great source for doing research and looking for reliable information among the piles of shitposting.

From what I know from fans, the writers of Supernatural have been queer baiting for years. I mean it’s the CW, I’m not that surprised. What also wouldn’t surprise me, that by the end of the series Castiel is back and he and Dean actually start and relationship or strongly hint at starting one. I actually fear for the writer lives if they threw out a confession scene after years of queerbaiting and potential ship tease (debatable) and they don’t put them together. Fans are going to be angrier than they probably ever have been with this show and the showrunners and writers really would be known for queer baiting.

From what I know about how previous shows have done and if anyone that has ever worked on this show wants to continue living, Castiel will be back from Super Hell (is that what yall are calling it?) and he will get together with Dean. And they will fall under the Last-Minute Hookup trope and my networks make LGBTQ relationships canon last season.

 One last show I want to talk about is Supergirl, which in has been recently announced that the 6th season will be the last. The show started on CBS but moved to the CW after the end of season 1. So more CW bullshit. There is no confirmation about whether the CW or any of the Supergirl writers are planning to do this, its all speculation. Supergirl is more LGBTQ friendly than some other shows on the Network. One of the main characters came out a few years ago and had a girlfriend a season and has had plenty of hookups with other ladies around the Arrowverse. They even introduced a trans-woman superhero in the form of Dreamer.

Let’s talk SuperCorp. Lena Luthor was introduced in the 2nd season and has been a major character in Kara’s life ever since her introduction. Even if she isn’t involved in the plot, Kara always goes to her to talk and check in on her and worry about her. They are best friends. Since the 2 have met, there has been plenty of Les Yay going on. The writers seem to be aware of the fans wanting SuperCorp to be canon and they keep throwing in moments like Kara and Lena struggling together or Kara carrying Lena bridal style.

Why I bring this up after the announcement of Supergirl’s final season to start next year. We may get SuperCorp. Kara has a relationship with William in the show and not a single person likes this relationship. The writers may scrap it and get put Kara and Lena together for the final season. This is a big maybe though. The Supergirl writers and crew get called out a lot for queerbaiting.

Maiko and Sukka?

I LOVE THEM. they are imo a very good respresentation of childhood crushes to first teen romance. they love each other it is so obvious. they care so much for each other and mai and zuko are both rarely seen smiling but they are seen smiling with or because of each other a fairly decent amount. i think they are adorable and i love their little classic childhood crushes to first loves w an edgy twist vibes. my least favorite thing about maiko isnt even about maiko. its about how people who dont like maiko claim that it is toxic. HONEY. they are teenagers. teenagers SUCK at expressing emotions. i should know im literally still in high school. and when one of those teenagers was abused and has anger issues and is very over dramatic and the other is repressed and never learned how to express her emotions in a healthy way because she was never allowed to and most likely emotionally abused THEYRE GONNA HAVE SOME COMMUNICATION ISSUES. every couple has fights. every couple has bumps and obstacles to overcome and maiko is no exception. and the thing is: they DO work on their issues and try to be better for each other. when people say mai was toxic to zuko i wanna slap them. are you serious? like no. she was not toxic at all. she cared for him so much and just because she wasnt as outwardly emotional as him or other characters dowsnt mean its false. she literally committed treason, went against everything she was ever taught, finally decided to do what she wanted instead of being who she had always been expected to be in order to save his life at boiling rock because. she. loved. him. she gave up so much for zuko and if you think she didnt love him you are dead wrong. zuko wasnt a perfect boyfriend either. he got jealous very easily and while its normal to be jealous sometimes especially as a teenage boy he still needed to work on controlling that jealousy and trusting mai and when they had their fight at ember island and made up they. got. better. he also dumped her through a letter which was like v sucky of him. zuko is not perfect in this pairing so dont act like he is. but he tries. he tries to do nice things for mai, particularly through gift giving and trying to impress her with food because that seems to be the best way he knows how to show his love and appreciation which is frankly adorable. and when mai came back in the finale he looked SO HAPPY. HE SMILED SO WIDE. THEIR HUG?? SO TENDER. maiko is not toxic. maiko is top tier. maiko is love. maiko is so good yall. so good. damn i think i just convinced myself to like maiko even more than i already did. its jusg a very realistic relationship to me because it isnt perfect. and because its not perfect it makes it so much better when they make up and have their sweet moments and try hard to be good for one another because that is caring and that is love. if you think maiko is toxic get out. i will not tolerate maiko slander on this blog.

sukka

ONCE AGAIN. I LOVE THEM. they bring out the best in each other. suki helps him grow as a person and shows him how wrong he was about women and he doesnt fight her on it. he admits he was wrong and sexist and immediately changes his perspective. she helped him grow and thats very important in a relationship as well. and we all know sokka is a big protector as well. and we all know suki can handle herself just fine thank you very much. when he tries too hard to keep her safe and she tells him that she can handle herself he respects her wishes and lays off a little, but its so obvious that hes doing it because he cares so much and is scared to lose her. and when she wants to kiss him and he says no she doesnt push him. the level of respect and care they have for one another is *chefs kiss* and that scene where sokka says no is so important because no means no applies to guys as well. and in book three they are able to joke around with each other and be all cutesy in their honeymoon phase and just be teenagers for the first time in their life. they understand each other theough their roles of protector and nonbender and leader and they can relate to each ither on that and they can relate to each other on the level of responsibility they have and the weight on their shoulders, but when theyre together and theyre allowed to just be teenagers and be youthful and have fun its so refreshing becUse they deserve to just be kids and i love that they get to have that with each other. so yeah. sukka<3
