Observation I made:
During this part of WftD, the closer the choir is to the front, the more violently they thrash around.
Ricky doesn't really thrash and only raises his crutches.
Mischa and Noel are slightly more intense but it mostly looks like they're reaching for something.
Ocean and Constance have the most intense and violent movements. Ocean's hair flips around and she twists; Constance flails then snaps right back into place
Maybe everyone knows that XD but hey I was the first person to make a post about so there's that! >:D

Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams
Recommended by Lori
Florist Annie Walker is the youngest, sweetest sister of four. Orphaned at an early age, Annie's grown up under the protective wing of her older brother and two older sisters, not to mention the close-knit (and nosy) population of Rome, Kentucky. But now Annie would really like to find "the one," settle down, and have a family. That would fill the emptiness that nothing else seems to satisfy, right? Except Annie's social anxiety makes dating a nightmare, and when her most recent date fakes an emergency to ditch her, Annie is ready to give it all up. Enter tattooed bodyguard Will Griffin, back in town to guard Annie's future sister-in-law, pop star Amelia. Will agrees to be Annie's dating coach, just to give her tips and practice with the things that seem so hard when she's in the middle of a date. Unsurprisingly, the more time Annie and Will spend together, the closer they become, and the more Annie wonders what she's going to do when Will's assignment with Amelia is over. Annie is so delightful as a character, trying to break out of the box her siblings, and everyone in the town have put her in -- and with Will she is able to explore aspects of her personality that she hasn't shown anyone else. Will, of course, has his own past to contend with, and his own hangups to overcome. I listened to the audiobook on this one, and the dual narration really brought the novel to life. As I say in my rec card, "the most adorable small-town romance."

With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson
Recommended by Lillian
Even though I think there is too much talk about tropes these days, it does work as a quick way to sum up a story. With Love, From Cold World seems like it would be easy to categorize. It's an Enemies to Lovers, workplace romance. The author ticks a few classic Rom-Com boxes - stuck in the office overnight together, beach trip sunscreen application, the setting is an almost too-quirky Winter-themed amusement park in Florida called Cold World. But hold on - there's more going on here that just that. Every layer starting with something as simple as the cover and continuing on to the emotions of the main characters is handled with a little more thought and a little less cookie-cutter storytelling. Lauren is a buttoned-up accountant, but getting her to open up and take risks for friendship and love didn't feel simple. Asa is a career Cold World employee who is not living up to his potential, but actually maybe he's doing great right where he is. There were moments I laughed, got choked up, and—of course—swooned. I found their getting together to be surprisingly touching. Definitely recommend for the romance reader as well as the romance-curious.

Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee
Recommended by Becca
All Dylan Tang wants is to help keep his aunt's struggling Chinese takeout, Wok Warriors, afloat. He has a plan, too. Win the Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake competition—using his grandmother's unique blue mooncake recipe—and get Wok Warriors featured on a popular food television show. There are only two problems: 1) his aunt doesn't have the recipe, and 2) Theo Somers. After Dylan has an unfortunate run-in with Theo's best friend, Theo (wealthy, charming, and very attractive) tries to make it up to him by making a rather large donation to the takeout. Unable to refuse the needed money but not wanting to owe any favors, Dylan agrees to be Theo's fake date to a family wedding. But a weekend in the Hamptons surrounded by rich-people problems and having to contend with his growing attraction to Theo as they get to know each other might be more than he bargained for. Will sabotage, scandal, and stress get in the way of their budding relationship, or will Dylan learn the secret ingredients for both mooncakes and romance? Short, sweet, and a quick read, Fake Dates and Mooncakes was everything I wanted. Delicious food descriptions and a fake dating plot where they don't mess around too long saying, "Oh, it started as fake but now I have feelings for him and I can't act on them because we had an agreement!" (my least favorite part of the trope), took it over the top. Also, the cover art! I'm in love.
Long story short, next Saturday should be a lot of fun. Good vibes, good people, and good books. Come stop by and celebrate love and people who love love!

oc introduction: meet ‘em in the skies
hey y’all! this is a semi-formal introduction post to the women of meet ‘em in the skies, my Band of Brothers universe. thanks to @mercurygray and @shoshiwrites for giving me some guidance on how to structure this. my OCs are presented in alphabetical order by first name because that’s how my google doc sorted them. (there are also a lot of them so here’s a read more!)
Anita Kennedy Matthews, 18; from Harvey, IL
Youngest of seven girls, doesn’t often get the chance to be the first in her family to do something. Wants to do more with her life than sit around and wait to get married, so she volunteers for the paratroopers the day after she graduates high school. Loves to swim and go dancing. Dedicated to her friends, happy, and slightly naive. Has an unexpected reunion during training.
Coretta Bailey, 26; from Oakland, CA
A trailblazer. One of the first Black graduates of Scripps College, one of the first Black nurses accepted into the ANC, and the first Black nurse to report to the ETO for duty. Her parents would prefer her to be home, so she placates them by occasionally writing to a pilot she knew growing up, and he writes back, but she hopes no one thinks she’s serious about starting anything. There’s a war on. She’s beauty and she’s grace, refined, eloquent, poised, and determined to serve the men and women of her country to the best of her ability.
Doris “Trip” Davis Danes, 21; from Snowshoe, WV
Grew up hunting and farming in the woods with her younger sister while her father and older brothers worked in the coal mines. Shoots straight, doesn’t miss. Knows how to stick up for herself when threatened. Had to balance being the eldest daughter but the second youngest child with no mother in the house. The Army came and got her when the integration order went into effect. Only went to school through eighth grade.
Dorothy “Dot” Woods, 19; from Chicago, IL
City girl, loves heights. Grew up in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago’s infamous Black Belt, and loved it. Was a NYA kid and ended up as a switchboard operator at a phone company for a year and some change. Her dad fought in the Great War, her older brother’s 4F, so she decides to join up before they try to draft her. She’s willing to do the dirty work in order to win the war. She’s not happy about having to serve with non-Blacks, but she’ll do it.
Eleanor “Ellie” Gibbs, 20; from Billings, MT
Rancher’s daughter. Loves riding horses, knows how to shoot, pitch a tent, and collect freshwater. Used to go on cattle drives with her older brother and her dad. Went to boarding school on the East Coast but was sent back for disciplinary reasons. Wasn’t allowed to follow her brother to the Pacific, so she bribes some stable hands to sneak her out of the house and she joins the paratroopers. She’s a sweet talker with a smile like warm sunshine.
Estelle Brown, 18; from Austin, TX
Replacement who joined up to kick some ass but ended up a medic. She’s trying to roll with it. Was constantly in school-yard scraps and fights with her nine siblings growing up, so she learned to patch up her own cuts and bruises. Competitive dancer, competitive in everything, that’s why it was the paratroopers or nothing for her. She wants to be with the best. She’s as stubborn as they come, fiery, and vibrant. Chews gum like her life depends on it.
Florence “Flo” Kanaka’ole, 20; from Honolulu, HI
Showgirl turned soldier. Was in her family’s tourism business dancing and making crafts, and picked up gigs at some of the sailor’s nightclubs on Waikiki Beach so she could afford to live with some friends. Wanted to join up after Pearl Harbor to protect her homeland, and Army posters appealed to her. No more makeup, dresses, or fake smiles. Makes everyone learn to say her last name correctly. If they can say Eisenhower, they can say hers. Loves to sing ‘Ōlelo songs and she’ll dance for everyone when she’s drunk. Best friends with Frankie.
Frances “Frankie” Wilson, 19; from Baltimore, MD
Joins up because she’s bored. Her husband is off being a hotshot pilot in the Pacific, and she’s bored in her in-law’s house, getting no action—combat or physical. Quits her seamstress apprenticeship to join the paratroopers because she wants a challenge. Her good looks and perfectly tailored uniforms can be deceiving. Feisty, foul-mouthed, funny, and a shameless flirt. Will tailor your uniforms for money, doesn’t really care how much. Best friends with Flo.
Georgina M. Webster, 20; from Harlem, NY
Comes from an illustrious pedigree, constantly name drops her parents’ acquaintances and some of the people she knew in her youth. Wants everyone to know she’s a Radcliffe student but refuses to explain what that means to anyone who doesn’t already understand. Incredibly smart, whip quick wit, regularly complains about the poor quality of everything that the Army provides. Has no bedside manner. Storms every room she walks into.
Gloria “Glory” Davies, 19; from Memphis, TN
A gentle, sweet Southerner. Kind, soft-spoken, humble, not a mean bone in her body. Oldest of eight, dropped out of high school to help her parents run their restaurant. Wanted to join up when the war started, but was too afraid to leave her family for the unknown. Eventually worked up the courage and met Easy Company at Ft. Bragg. Loves music but is too shy to sing in front of others. Quickly becomes a favorite of Col. Sink’s.
Jeanne “Jeannie” Carmichael, 19; from Fruitland, GA
Comes to the Army with no strings attached. No family, no friends, no address. Just the clothes she has on and the few belongings in her bag. A quick learner, thinks fast on her feet, incredibly strong, good with her hands. Good memory on account that she can’t read. Has yet to learn how to people. Knows nothing of the world outside of her tiny farm town, and has to adjust to people with morals different than hers.
Josephine “Joey” O’Shaughnessy, 25; from Boston, MA
A red-headed fury. Is trying to get some heat off of her back after an incident at OCS by shaping her platoon into the best the Army has ever seen. Doesn’t have the time or patience to care about individual feelings, but always takes the time to help a soldier she sees struggling with a task. Refuses to leave a man behind. Believes in raising the lowest common denominator. Proud graduate of Spelman College. Best friends with Lil.
Lillian “Lil” Sikes Linetti, 22; from Atlantic City, NJ
Howard University Alumni. Got married at 18 and struggled to be a housewife after college. Believes the Army will give her something to do with her education and will give her space from her husband. The middle of five children all serving in the Armed Forces. Has always wanted to travel. Has a knack for maps and navigation. Mom friend, gets worried sometimes. Doesn’t put up with shenanigans. Best friends with Joey.
Matilda “Mattie” James, 17; from Pahokee, FL
Grew up as a migrant worker. Taught herself to sing and read music, soloist at her church, former music teacher. Wants to help her family move to Pittsburgh, where the Black community is growing and her dad’s family lives. Doesn’t tell her family that she’s joining up, or that she’s going with the paratroopers for the extra pay. Wants to fight so that her younger brothers won’t have to. Second youngest company member, and she’ll go after you if you bring it up. Wants to be treated like an adult. Faith is important to her.
Rose Robinson, 27; from San Francisco, CA
Though a New Yorker by birth, she spent her childhood and adolescence between San Francisco and Paris. Attended the Emma Willard School and Vassar College. Speaks several languages, loves baseball, and art. Joining up with the OSS puts her in close contact with her good friend Lewis Nixon over the course of the war.
Victoria “Bertie” Adams Albert, 19; from Green Bay, WI
Joins up when a recruiter comes into her family’s camera shop and asks if anyone would like to join the APS. Believes in telling stories honestly and truthfully. Will run directly into the line of fire for a picture. Easy to tease, but easy to apologize to. A bit idyllic, naive, young, in over her head at points. Trusts people in authority. Babbles when she’s nervous. Tries to use her camera as a shield but gets too attached anyway.
if you have any questions or would like to know more about any of them, please don’t hesitate to send me a message or send in an ask!

since when did hogwarts have a ballroom?
the swell of violins from inside the perplexing chamber was most certainly real, though, and lillian brushed out a wrinkle in her skirt before making her way into the crush of people.
immediately overwhelmed, she pushed her way to the side of the ballroom, where she took a seat and waited to be asked to dance. just like she had been trained. the pinch of her corset made it hard to breathe, though it wasn’t even particularly tight. everything was loud and bright.
to steady herself, lillian decided to pick a dancing couple to watch while she calmed down. her eyes fell on her cousin noah, dancing with a girl lillian remembered as skadi otteson. though she couldn’t see noah’s face, the way he stood and the gentle way his hand rested on miss ottesen’s waist spoke of sheer adoration. lillian was happy for her dear cousin, of course, but an ache formed in her heart of hearts as she fretted about never being loved like that.
as she scanned the ballroom, eyes settling on other dancers, a soft tap to her shoulder made her jump.
a familiar pair of forest-green eyes and an expression she hadn’t seen on this boy’s face before…
atticus doherty cleared his throat and extended a hand, a dusting of pink across his pale cheeks. she hadn’t seen him speak to anyone except frederick graham so far, and yet there he stood.
“care to dance?”
————-
if damian maccarrick was going to be honest (which he always tried to be), he hated balls. he hated all the pretentious people who had never spent a day stealing to feed their siblings. he hated looking at his own shabby, frayed robes that aoife had patched a hundred times and knowing that he would never fit in.
he did like the free food, though.
he stood against the wall. he knew it was bad form, not dancing with any of the young ladies without partners, but. he couldn’t bring himself to dance with a woman.
his gaze was, instead, drawn to a classmate. one he had loved from afar for so many years.
lewis gallach.
lewis was also standing against the wall, arms crossed. damian itched to talk to him, to take him in his arms and kiss him until neither of them could breathe and say everything bubbling under the surface for so so long.
but he didn’t.
instead damian leaned against the wall with a glass of punch in his scarred hands and his shabby robes still too small and hoped, dreamed, prayed for a world where he could love lewis openly.
a world where he could tell him.
but not today.
so he stopped and hoped and dreamed and didn’t notice the rustle of robes as lewis moved closer and didn’t even notice until the smaller man’s shoulder was against his.
a hand slipped into his…
————
helen walsh had always known, distantly, that she didn’t fit into this high english society.
never was it more evident, though, than here.
her american-styled cotton dress looked plain with all the glitz and gold of the others in the room.
she pretended she didn’t mind, of course, being aloof would be her salvation.
but her difference was eating her alive.
she brushed a loose scarlet curl back and closed her eyes as she sat, desperate to get the night over with as fast as she could.
the ballroom - where had that come from, anyway? - was filled with people laughing and talking and dancing and usually helen would be desperate to be in the center of the excitement but now, now she just hid in the corner and begged that no one would notice her fraying hem or her shoes that didn’t fit right.
whispers of silk and hints of chiffon whisked by her and she smoothed a hand over her rough cotton gown, hoping they didn’t notice the way it stuck out.
a weight settled on the sofa next to her but she didn’t look up, only trying to hide the runs in her stockings.
a familiar voice spoke, then, and she jumped.
“hey, what’s wrong?” asked fred graham.
————
lady georgia coventry was fully in her element.
switching from dance partner to dance partner as she laughed and twirled and let her gold skirts float around her, this was the place she belonged.
as the song ended, she made her way off the floor to find her next partner, but was waylaid by primrose gray.
“georgia, have you seen-“ prim stopped for a moment to breathe. she seemed exhausted, for some reason.
“have i see what, exactly?” georgia asked, scanning the room eagerly. there went the kennedys…
primrose took another breath. “have you seen….have you seen laurent?”
georgia rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “i saw him by the punch not long ago, you might want to try there.”
a hint of a blush dusted itself across her friend’s cheeks as she excused herself, leaving georgia alone again and without a partner for the dance. just her luck.
as she turned to go sit down - her feet could use a break anyway - she ran into something.
rather, someone.
adam ellis’s familiar voice ran through georgia’s very core as he murmured “hello, lady.”
curse her petite frame! she separated herself from him and scowled fiercely, biting out an apology. she was the future duchess of coventry, for merlin’s sake, and she could not be caught-
oh. he was warm.
he offered her a smile, extended his hand, and whispered “might i have this dance?”
“that’s not the phrase, idiot.” georgia shot back, but nonetheless she took his offer.
————
lillian sat, frozen, for a moment. atticus seemed to take this as a rejection and made to leave, shoulders beginning to slump, but lillian caught his hand in her own.
“wait- i didn’t mean-“
he turned back, then, and lillian was rendered breathless.
“i…yeah. i want to dance with you.”
a hint of a smile made its way over his face as she took his hand and they made their way to the floor.
as they began the dance, lillian realized that she was home.
————
damian’s hands fisted in lewis’s shirt as he pulled him closer for what was not the first time. maybe he had too much champagne, but lewis wasn’t complaining either.
the other boy’s lips were soft and plump and everything damian wanted as one hand dropped to lewis’s waist and pulled him even closer.
damian knew he couldn’t have this forever. he knew that, in all likeliness, he could only have lewis for their school days before he lost him again.
but he has him now, their lips moving together and lewis’s hands on his shoulders and damian’s hands on lewis’s waist.
the chatter of the ballroom seemed to quiet as damian broke the kiss so both of them could catch their breath, damian still holding lewis close to him. both of them were rumpled and rosy, and lewis’s lips were as swollen as damian’s own felt.
damian felt a reflexive laugh slip from his lips as he ran a hand through his dark curls and pressed a soft kiss against lewis’s cheekbone.
the smaller man just let out a sigh and laid his head on damian’s shoulder, where he stayed.
maybe they would be all right.
————-
helen jumped as fred spoke and he raised his hands in surrender.
“sorry, i didn’t mean to scare you, but you seemed upset…”
helen sighed. “i dunno…i don’t fit in with any of these people, yknow? i ain’t ever fit in, and i doubt i ever will.”
fred smiled, though something lurked just behind his eyes. “yeah, me too, i guess. all these people come from everything, but i’ve got nothing, yeah?”
helen nudged him with her shoulder. “you’ve got me, though, hm?”
fred grinned, genuine this time. “yeah, i sure do.”
————
adam’s hand on georgia’s waist felt better than she had anticipated, in all honesty.
despite the fact they’d spent the previous few school years bickering, he was steady and gentle as they danced. she looked up at him, getting lost in his chocolate eyes as the steps to the dance ran through her mind.
a crescendo, then, and he twirled her and caught her close to his broad chest. she couldn’t help the way her breath caught at their closeness.
but no. she couldn’t feel this way for adam ellis. that would be preposterous. absurd.
and yet…
butterflies fluttered in her stomach in time with the music and, though it may have been her imagination, she could’ve sworn he pulled her closer.
the song came to an end and they bowed before georgia made her way to get punch and sit down. as she made her way towards the couch, a now-familiar hand caught her wrist.
“miss coventry….” he began. “would you…like to do that again?”
despite herself, a hint of a smile crossed georgia’s face.
“i would love to.”

(JTA) – A global bestseller by a Jewish Holocaust victim; a novel by a beloved and politically conservative Jewish American writer; a memoir of growing up mixed-race and Jewish; and a contemporary novel about a high-achieving Jewish family are among the nearly 700 books a Florida school district removed from classroom libraries this year in fear of violating state laws on sexual content in schools.
The purge of books from Orange County Public Schools, in Orlando, over the course of the past semester is the latest consequence of a conservative movement across the country — and strongest in Florida — to rid public and school libraries of materials deemed offensive. While the vast majority of such challenged and removed books involve race, gender and sexuality, several Jewish books have previously been caught in the dragnet.
The Orange County case is unusual for the sheer volume of books removed — 699 including some duplicates, according to documents the district provided — and for the unusually large number of books about the Holocaust and Jewish identity included among them. They included:
“Suite Française,” by Irène Némirovsky, a Ukrainian-French Jewish writer who wrote her novel in secret under German occupation before perishing in Auschwitz
“Herzog,” a semi-autobiographical novel by Jewish writer Saul Bellow, an outspoken cultural conservative whose son Adam Bellow is a publisher of right-wing Jewish books
“Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self,” by Rebecca Walker, feminist theorist and daughter of author Alice Walker, whose own antisemitic comments and writings have faced scrutiny in the past
“Bee Season,” a novel about a high-achieving family of Jewish scholars and cantors, by Myra Goldberg
“The Splendid and the Vile,” a nonfiction history book about Winston Churchill’s decision to fight Hitler’s forces during World War II, by Erik Larson
The collected plays of Lillian Hellman, a Jewish playwright and left-wing activist who was accused of Communist activities
“The Storyteller,” a novel dealing with the Holocaust by bestselling author Jodi Picoult
“The Reader,” a German novel about the aftermath of the Holocaust by Bernhard Schlink
“Sophie’s Choice,” a bestselling novel also about the aftermath of the Holocaust by William Styron
“The Freedom Writers Diary,” a nonfiction compilation of several high school students’ diaries inspired by their teachers’ efforts to instruct them on the Holocaust and Anne Frank
“Books are removed from classrooms with deference to House Bill 1069,” district spokesperson David Ocasio told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, referring to a Florida law signed this year that heavily restricts instruction and classroom materials about human sexuality.
No individual reasoning was given for each book’s removal, but Ocasio said that all of the books had been marked as “not approved for any grade level.” He added that every book will go through a secondary review to determine if it will be restricted to certain grade levels or “weeded from the collection” altogether.
Some of the books on Orange County’s list have come under scrutiny in the past for removals from other districts. “The Storyteller” was the subject of widespread press coverage after a member of the right-wing activist group Moms For Liberty successfully pushed for its removal from a different Florida school district earlier this year. “Sophie’s Choice” was recently removed from a third Florida school district at the behest of a Jewish parent’s challenge; both parents said their challenges were due to sexual content.
Other outwardly Jewish books on the list, including “The Reader” and Philip Roth’s “Portnoy’s Complaint,” contain explicit sexual content. Non-Jewish World War II novels “Slaughterhouse-Five” and “Catch-22” were also pulled.
Among the hundreds of other books flagged for removal in the district were frequently challenged books like “Gender Queer” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as well as literary standards like Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,” and children’s fare like a book based on Disney’s “The Incredibles.” Some items were listed more than once.
Other districts in Florida this year have pulled an illustrated adaptation of Anne Frank’s diary in order to comply with the state law.
