So usually when an imaginary friend is a real thing in a story, it’s either a demon or a ghost or some supernatural boogeyman that probably wants to eat the kid they’ve befriended (Mama, a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies), or “imaginary friends” are just treated as a real thing in the setting, and if a child just thinks hard enough they can manifest a friend into existence (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Happy).

And somewhere in the middle is an area where the imaginary friend in question is real and they are supernatural, but they aren’t malevolent, and they aren’t entirely honest about what they are. Like maybe they’re a fairy or a god or some kind of boggle from mythology, but they just got caught by a six year old and they don’t have time to get into it, so they just go “…Yes. I’m your imaginary friend. We haven’t met. How do you do.” And then they stick around because they do love this kid, and if you’re a boggle from mythology in the modern day good food is really hard to come by.

And at some level. That’s what I think Hobbes is.

But! I think the very first major change I'm making plotwise in the Mentor Tiger and Fire Au is Firepaw being turned against Ravenpaw.

After witnessing Redtail's death, Ravenpaw is terrified of Tigerclaw and just wants to get away from him. He sees how Spottedleaf had defended him and how Tigerclaw doesn't start conflict with her, so suddenly, he tells Spottedleaf he wants to be her apprentice instead of a warrior. Tigerclaw is furious becuase being Ravenpaw's mentor was the only way to keep an eye on him. The clan generally has a negative reaction to this and see him as cowardly for switching roles after his first battle, notably Dustpaw. Bluestar gives Rusty to Tigerclaw to train to reward him for avenging Redtail and to make up for him loosing his apprentice.

Firepaw is initially curious about Ravenpaw. Raven is very quiet and doesn't talk with him much at first but Fire can at least appreciate that he doesn't throw insults like Dustpaw and Sandpaw. Tigerclaw puts Firepaw through very rough training, so he ends up in the medicine den often for small injuries and that's when he starts to get friendly with Ravenpaw. Raven patches him up and Firepaw enjoys the breaks from training spent with him.

Firepaw likes Ravenpaw, he considers him a friend so he ofc always took notice of how... jumpy and edgy he seemed. Fire tries to ask Spottedleaf about it, but she doesn't give him many foward answers. So when Tigerclaw is spreading the idea that Ravenpaw might be a ShadowClan traitor.... Firepaw isn't sure what to believe. Ravenpaw is his friend, but his behaviour and Tigerclaw's accusations seem to align. Could it really be true?

[P.S. In this Au, Redtail and Spottedleaf's relationship as siblings is canon, so she actually had a small suspicion about Tigerclaw but keeps it to herself for the time being. This is the reason she accepted Ravenpaw as her apprentice though. She knows what it's like to want to run away from the violence that comes with being a warrior. Spotted and Tiger have a pretty complex relationship in this AU, Ravenpaw and Firepaw are almost going to be parallels of them here... but my Spotted and Tiger childhood friendship is another story on this post here.]
