Alex exits the room, and their comments are idiotic per usual. You glance back at the two. "You're both idiots."
Manny nearly gasps, drawing his inner Gloria energy. "I'm offended you would put me in the same category as your boyfriend."
You nearly roll your eyes. "Did either of you notice Joe was in the car with us or outside the door messing with one of your plants?"
Manny and Luke turn to one another, the latter shrugs.
"No, right? That's why Alex was saying those things, not because she's sending mixed signals, it's because your little brother slash young uncle is adorable." You smile, holding your hand out for him. "Come on, baby Joe."
You turn back towards the two once you get the youngin in your arms. "Now, if you'll excuse me, someone needs to clean himself up before his mama comes up here and sees the dirt."
Your boyfriend pouts. "Why does he get your attention?"
You glance back at Luke, "get a baby and maybe you'll be cute."
He smirks, taking a step towards you. "Oh my- Luke no. I'm not going to have a baby with you."
You two turn and see everyone's attention on your conversation. "Oh, great."
"It's not like I made everyone look at us."
You narrow your eyes at him.
"Ay, what happened to Joe?" Gloria asks, seeing how dirty her son is.
"He decided to take a deep dive into one of the plants upstairs. So, I was going to see what I could clean up before determining if he needs a bath yet or not."
"That's so nice of you, thank you."
"Mr. Dunphy?"
"How many times have I told you to call me, Phil?"
"When I'm not mad at your son, we'll talk."
"But your never not mad at him."
You thin your lips, raise your brows, and tilt your head as if to say I told you so.
He sighs, looking up at his son. "Luke?"
The teen avoids making eye contact with anyone.
"He needs to go out and do something with himself."
"Ah, I got it. He needs to practice his magic."
An evil smirk dances across your lips. "Exactly. See you, baby."
"Wait- no." His shoulders slump as your figure disappears into the bathroom.
"Really, Luke? Here of all places?" Claire shakes her head.
He shrugs, "what can I say? She's hot."
Haley and Alex roll their eyes.

Luke Dunphy x Male Reader
Request - Luke Dunphy x male reader. Where Luke and the reader are best friends but became boyfriends over time. They're so the reader comes over the Dunphy house to hang out or spend the night with his boyfriend but the family think that they're just best friends even if they caught them cuddling on the couch or on the bed. But they then they caught Luke and the reader kissing. Making both Luke and the reader explain to them how they've been dating for a month now and laughing so hard how so oblivious his family is.
You are at Luke’s house and he is happy to spend time with you. You are in the kitchen and Luke gave you a a peck on the lips and you start to smile.
“So happy you are here” Luke smiled.
“Me too. I missed you” You said.
You went away for a few days, Luke is happy that you're back. Luke's family doesn't know that you are his boyfriend, it's his first serious relationship.
“I don't know how to tell them, that we are dating,” Luke said.
“Maybe have them all together and tell them,” You said.
You and Luke have been friends for many years. You have been dating Luke in secret for almost a month. You are Luke’s first boyfriend.
“Is your sister Haley okay? She is acting strange” You asked.
“Haley and Dylan are mad at each other. They are getting annoying, but I think they will get back together” Luke said.

Luke was about to kiss but he heard Phil and Clarie and Luke moved away from you fast. Claire and Phil greeted you
“Y/n are you staying for dinner?” Claire asked.

“He has been watching every high school musical,” Claire said.

Phil starts to dance and sing.
“We're all in this together. Once we know that we are, we're all stars”
You try not to laugh loud and you are speechless, that he knows the step.
“Wow... First time seeing an adult knowing all the steps” You said.
“We are going to hang out in my room,” Luke said.
He grabbed your hand and you leave the kitchen.
“My dad is obsessed with high school musical. I have seen him practice the steps before” Luke said.

Cam and Micthell go back and forth talking about your sexuality. You are asking Phil facts about high school musical and he is getting it right. Luke feels embarrassed about it again Phil starts to dance. Phil did make you dance with him but you didn't know the steps.
“This is so embarrassing,” Luke said.
“He made me watch every movie with him,” Clarie said.
Later, you try to hang out with Luke but Lily wanted to tell you her new joke. You do spend time with Lily then she went play with someone else. You go inside the house then a bit later Luke went inside the house. You are in his room and he pulled you closer to him. He starts to kiss you and you are kissing him back...
“I wanted to kiss you all night,” Luke said.
“Me too” You smiled.
Luke doesn't stop kissing you and he starts to smile. Claire almost caught you and Luke kissing but you pushed him away.
“Boys, dinner is ready. Why are you two up here?” Claire asked.
“I-I...” Luke starts to stutter.
“Luke was showing me this funny video that he found online. A guy went to a coffee shop and he lets out a huge fart-” You said.
Claire didn't let you finish.
“That’s not funny that gross” Clarie said.
“It's a guy thing. You wouldn't understand since you are a girl” Luke said.
“Mhmm, well come downstairs and eat,” Clarie said.
Claire left the bedroom and you sighed in relief.
“That was a good idea to lie about farting,” Luke said.
“Not sure why, but that's the only thing that popped into my head” You smiled.
Luke gave you a peck on the lips and he smiled. You and Luke go downstairs for dinner and you are joining them for dinner. But you and Luke hold hands under the table.

Headcanons: Being the Nonbinary (Second) Youngest Pritchett Sibling

Warnings: Descriptions of coming out and canon-typical ‘not understanding the queers’. (Let me know if I need to add any)
(A/N: I haven’t watched all of Modern Family yet, though I’ve seen up until season 8 and the occasional later episode. This is highly self-indulgent, and I’ll probably end up writing some more fics based on this premise; feel free to request them!)
Growing up, there may have been signs that you were a little ‘different’; maybe not.
If there were, Jay chose to ignore it.
Some suspicion would only arise after Mitch’s coming out(s).
Whenever you realised you were nonbinary, I imagine that the first of your family members who you would come out to would be Mitch, who would, in his own repressed way, support you in any way he could.
I don’t know if Claire would necessarily understand, but she’d still be supportive.
When you come out to your parents, they’re both confused, but Dede is immediately accepting and supportive (and Jay always insists that it was just to spite him).
On the other hand, Jay... well, he isn’t cruel or dismissive or anything.
He just doesn’t get it.
But, you’re his kid- his baby- and he doesn’t want to lose you because he doesn’t understand.
So, he’ll go along with it and try calling you what you wanna be called.
Keep the peace, y’know?
And, he’ll screw up.
At first, part of him will feel like you, or anyone else who corrects him, are being overly pedantic, but he’ll grit his teeth and concede to avoid any conflict.
It’ll take him years and several lectures from Mitchell and Gloria for Jay to realise how important it is for him to try his best to understand you, or at the very least get it right as much as he can.
And, when he does, he’ll make sure to let you know that you have his full support, and he’s sorry that he couldn’t let you feel that sooner.
Gloria has always supported you.
Like your mother, her acceptance of you was immediate, and this time Jay couldn’t claim it was to spite him.
She wants the best for you and your relationship with your dad, so she will try her best to get him to support you rather than just tolerate you because he loves you.
Like Claire and Mitchell, she corrects him when he gets things wrong.
She’ll be happy to take you shopping for gender-affirming clothes.
And, she’ll be happy to listen if you ever need it.
Manny’s a mature and sensitive kid, so I feel like he’d mostly understand your gender when it’s first explained to him.
He’s never afraid to ask questions, though he’ll always do it out of curiosity, not judgement.
Phil, Claire and their kids all respect you.
Claire will always correct your dad when he gets things wrong.
I imagine that Phil is especially supportive and will happily refer to you as his ‘sibling-in-law’.
When Claire told him about your gender, I feel like he probably looked it up and, with a lot of research, grew to understand you as much as a cis guy ever could.
Haley and Luke probably don’t completely get it at first, but they’ll both try their best.
Alex is probably the Dunphy who understands it the most (and she probably thinks that being nonbinary is really kickass).
If anyone in her family needs any clarification on anything (it’s typically her siblings), she’ll be the first to explain things.
I feel like she’s very supportive of and knowledgeable about trans and nonbinary people and the issues they face (just between you and me, I headcanon Alex as queer, so that’s probably why).
Your chief supporters in your family are Mitch and Cam.
Whenever you need to vent about things that the rest of your family just won’t get, they’re always happy to lend a listening ear, especially Cam.
Although Mitchell cares so much about you, he struggles to be as openly loving and kind as Cam.
Cam will probably be the one who urges Mitch to speak to Jay on your behalf about how his behaviour affects you.
If you ever get any gender-affirming medical treatment, they’ll volunteer to go with you to appointments.
They’d also introduce you to their queer friends, if that’s something you want.
It may take some time, but you’ll get to feel like an accepted and supported member of your family in the end, because even if some of them don’t get it, they’ll try their best to make you feel affirmed.

Modern Family episode 8.18 "Five Minutes"

I’m a little worried that I missed the era of long-running shows. I actually used to wish for this- it seemed that even my favorite 11 season shows didn’t get there without some lulls along the way, fading into the background of pop culture for a year or two before resurfacing, good again but a little different somehow. So, I wished for shows to not overstay their welcome; I thought a good story didn’t wander. I don’t necessarily think that’s true anymore, and I’ve come to find that the passage of time does something to a story that can’t be replicated any other way. Modern Family is a case in point.
I watched the whole show for the first time over the past nine months, and I honestly felt a little embarrassed. I wanted to talk about it but I didn’t want to admit that I was just now getting around to what feels like the world’s most popular show. Even if it wasn’t the most talked about, I’ve never encountered anyone who’s never heard of it.
Over the years it grew into a comfort show, not because it’s a guilty pleasure, but because it provides the warm familiarity of hanging out with your best friends, who happen to be really funny. As the show neared the end, it was effortlessly emotional because it really was a whole era that was coming to an end. Seeing glimpses of how little Manny, Haley, Alex, and Luke all used to be made me wish that that much of my own life had passed alongside them and I could look back on how much I’d accomplished as the Dunphy’s grew up. I imagine that’s really special for the people who really did get to spend 11 years with the Pritchett clan.
I want to talk about “Five Minutes” just because I think it’s a really good one. On the whole, I think Mitch and Cam are Modern Family’s weak spot- their stories are generally superficial and repetitive and they are actually awful to each other, lying and keeping score all the time. But in this episode, they’re a perfectly silly united front. They’ve just boarded a plane bound for Turks and Caicos and popped some sleeping pills, settling into vacation mode. Then, a technical issue forces them to deplane and wander around LAX in search of a new flight- now high as kites. Having recently taken an edible in the LAX security line just for my flight to immediately get delayed, it seemed to me like a very plausible and hilarious premise. In their altered state, Mitch and Cam are a dumb and dumber team as they try to make their way to their new flight, with a connection in Dallas, that leaves in five minutes:
Cam: I don’t want to go to Dallas.
Mitch: Yeah, we’re going to Turks and Caicos.
Desk Attendant: Dallas is just where you make your connection.
Cam: I’m having a very hard time processing information right now.
They walk away, then look down at their boarding passes.
“Wait, why do these say Dallas?”
“I have no idea.”
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, there’s been a horrible mistake.”
“We don’t want to go to Dallas.”
They meander, forgetting everything under the sun as they walk. They find themselves at a hat stand- a haberdashery, as Cam calls it. They try on hats, complimenting each other as they do.

“Oh, look, little girl’s hats.”
“Oooh we should get one for Linda.”
“Who?”
“Um. Our daughter.”
“No, that’s LILY.”
“Oh I love that name!”
Eventually, they’re rescued by an employee on one of those indoor vehicles they have at the airport. I don’t know how else to describe them, but you know the ones, right? They’re delivered to their gate and make it to Turks and Caicos, happily ever after. But the ending is less important to me here than the journey, that was full of silly yet genuine affection for each other and forming a united front against a problem that neither of them caused.
Meanwhile, Haley is at dinner with her boyfriend, weatherman Rainer Shine, celebrating his 45th birthday. Five minutes before the cake arrives, things take a turn for the significant when Rainer, entering a midlife crisis, proposes to Haley. She initially says yes and both are excited, but cracks in their compatibility quickly surface, punctuated by a thunderstorm that Rainer failed to predict. In what is, in my opinion, one of the funniest and most underrated moments of the show, Haley hides the fact that she has the Weather app because the idea of not being people’s sole weather source hurts Rainer’s feelings:
“If it helps, my weather app didn’t predict rain either.”
“Your what?”
“Nothing.”

The rest of the characters are also occupied in this episode; Manny is trying to park at the movie theater five minutes before the movie starts, while Jay and Gloria bicker in the car. Phil and Claire, worried about Alex’s social life in college, pay her a surprise visit. They fear she is embarrassed when she tries to get rid of them, but it quickly comes to light that she’s not lonely or embarrassed- she’s just dating Claire’s weird assistant Ben.
Not to say I don’t care about those parts of this episode, but they aren’t the reason it continues to stand out to me as I progressed through three more seasons. Mitch and Cam’s wholesome silliness, and Haley’s genuine sincerity were both refreshing changes of pace for their characters that made this episode special.

Then I woke up properly, looked again and realised it’s Luke from Modern Family and like, I’m sorry but my brain just noped out 🤣.
I’m watching Modern Family for the first time now and Luke is currently a young teen, but in my mind he’s just an adorable baby and I personally can’t, in good conscience, see him as adolescent/young adult James Potter.
But what me and @thebattlehamster think is that he’d make perfect Teddy Lupin/Black fancast! Maybe not necessarily look wise, but Luke Dunphy’s character is literally how I’d imagine little Teddy. I’d even say the relationship Luke has with his dad Phil would be how Teddy and Sirius would interact.
I know this wasn’t your original aim with this ask, but imagine a Wolfstar raising Teddy fic with the Dunphy’s dynamics? That would be so wholesome 🥰
And because they’re currently trending, Evan and Barty could be like Mitchell and Cam and Lily could be Blaise (yes, I will continue to push my ‘Evan is Blaise’s father’ agenda).
How cute would that fic be, eh?
But of course, I did look him up further and whilst Luke Dunphy is a cute child in my eyes, the actor is now 23 and damn, he is fine 🥵

Luke is the type of guy who when he gets protective and jealous you can see it in his face. From the way his nose scrunches up to the way he basically ignored eye contact because there is no way that this is happening. Haley, Manny and Alex see this vividly, and they also know he won’t act on his feelings unless he has a reason to.
So manny invites you and Luke to the same party with a friend he knows has interest in you. As he sees you dance, he crushes the can in his hands and slowly makes his way over to you. Pushing him aside with a “move.” Sarcastically but somehow serious and earnestly you smile and say a soft “my hero.” because there is no other way to explain it than that. It's ILI! I don't know how you'll write Pam in the sequel but I'd truly enjoy if you would write it like what happened to season 8 redo or anything similar🙄 Also I've started watching Modern family (I'm in s7 now) and I can't stop but imagine a crossover, Hydes are the Dunphies, Kelso and Fez adopt a baby and Bob is married to Pam Macy, or something like that, I would definitely read it! By the way, young Luke gives me Kelso's vibes and the actor who plays him has IQ 150 😂😂!!!
Pam is... Well, I hate her. I think pretty much everyone knows that by now, but... I don't plan on making her an antagonist on the TSG sequel.

okay so i just finished modern family and i feel like i need to vent.
i wasnt a big fan for the first couple seasons because i didnt like that many characters. in fact, i only liked three. gloria, alex and luke. but when you watch a show for eleven whole seasons, its kinda hard not to get attached, even to the characters you dont like. and thats what happened - i got really attached. it always happens to me with long-running shows. i fall in love with them and when they eventually end, i cry. i cried when charmed ended. i cried when friends ended. i cried when desperate housewives ended. i hate greys anatomy now and havent watched it in two years, but i know ill watch the series finale when it comes out in 2047 and i know i will cry.
i usually just cry for a bit, then reflect on the show and what i liked, imagine what could be happening next and eventually move on. but since i have so much free time on my hands right now, thanks to covid19, i figured i might as well write about it. see if i like it. maybe ill become a writer. who knows. i for sure dont.
lets start with what i didnt like about the show.
some characters. phil could be difficult to watch sometimes. jay was always a bit too conservatice. but mitch and cam are who i always disliked the most. they are a really dysfunctional couple and theyre mostly really bad parents. i also dont really like the way eric stonestreet, as a straight man, portrays a gay man. when they were on my screen, there was a 90% chance that i would cringe, roll my eyes or just flat out hate it. the only thing that made their storylines bareable was lily, who turned out to be one of my favorite characters. love her snark and sass.
i was also not a fan of the lack of actual character development for some of them, most notably luke. nolan has a lot of acting potential and they didnt even allow him to dip his toe in.
so, what did i like about the show?
i come from a pretty big family. we get together way too often, theres grandparents, toddlers, a dog. the show felt so relatable to me on so many levels that it was a sheer delight watching it. it felt like they just... understood. what its like, with a big family. mine may not be as diverse, but its just as crazy. and modern family was the first show that gave me that. and i loved every second of that.
thats why i didnt like the finale, though. i get why they decided to let it play out like this. they wanted a sense of goodbye and the only way to reach that was by having them say an actual goodbye. but ive never been a fan of that.
because it always leaves you on a sad note. the dunphy kids all moved out and/or far away. the tucker pritchets moved far away. the delgado pritchets are gone for the summer. manny is gone for a year. theyre all crying about when they will get to see each other again. and its just...
unrealistic and sad. for me, at least. i mean, dont get me wrong, the show was never about realistic behaviour. but it was real. the family person inside me is screaming at the way they all decided to just up and leave. going to switzerland for work, just like that. uprooting their teenage daughter to move to missouri, just like that. going to college in a state far away, just like that. its probably a matter of how much you actually wanna be around your family, but not one of them ever didnt like it. i know i love being around my family. i would never move that far away. not for work, not for a relationship, not for education. i prioritize differently obviously, and im not saying the execs created utter bullshit with that finale, but i am saying that it was really disappointing to watch. and i know for a lot of people, its just how life goes. the kids move out to go to college. siblings move out and far away for job opportunities. all that jazz.
but portraying them like a close family that relies on and thrives around each other, and then having them give all that up in one episode. just sucks, is what im saying.
i wouldve done it differently, obviously. i wouldve let mitch, cam, lily and rex stay in their new, beautiful house. i wouldve let haley, dylan and the twins move into mitch and cams old house, still. i wouldve loved to see alex excel at work - but closer to home, because i wouldve also liked to see her value her family, which shes never done much. and i wouldve liked to see luke ace college - but nearby, for the same reason as alex. and then you can end the show with them all sitting around together in someones living room, or around the dinner table, and show the audience that even though everyones seperate life is important, having a family that sticks together matters just as much.
thats what i wouldve liked to see. but we dont always get what we want.
and where the hell was stella the entire time?

Most of all though, dating Luke means that you have a second family who will always be there

Modern Family: Stuck in a Moment (10x10)
I'm still really liking Haley's pregnancy story thread. Let's jump in.
Cons:
Jay and Gloria's plot thread wasn't funny or interesting. Imagine that. A banana spider infestation sends them all running from their home, but Jay sends Manny back in to get his elbow grease for his dry elbows. That's... the whole story. At no point does Jay suggest that he might be able to buy more elbow grease instead of sending Manny into danger. At no point does the family discuss what they're going to do about their spider infestation. At no point did I laugh or even crack a smile.
There's this through-line about Cam's Christmas card never being appreciated by the family enough, and how Cam is really sensitive about it. This was a small little joke, but it didn't work for me because the punch line was just Cam getting slightly offended that his card got ruined. It felt like a lot of setup for a lackluster punchline.
Pros:
Cam and Mitchell's story wasn't anything all that special, but it had a basic and funny premise that kept me entertained. Basically, they're disasters as parents, and they keep forgetting the kids, especially Cal, and leaving without them. They're trying to be good parents to Cal in this difficult time with his mom being in prison, but after they find out from a mall Santa what Cal wants for Christmas, they then accidentally leave him and Lily at the mall. The episode's button is the two of them coming home after the Christmas Eve party singing a song, only to realize they left Lily and Cal and the Dunphy's place. Good harmless comedy.
Meanwhile, Claire is getting frustrated because she wants to be a good hostess to make up for last year's Christmas, when her frozen turkey landed two members of the family in the hospital. Things go wrong when Phil steals the tree and presents in order to stage a house that he's showing (odd that he's doing this on Christmas Eve, but whatever). Claire goes to the house to steal back the Christmas stuff, but Phil thinks the house has been robbed, so goes out to get a replacement tree and gifts. Of course, he then sees the original stuff back at home. It ends up being a good thing he has backups, though, because the tree and presents end up getting caught on fire.
The Dunphy family, especially Phil, make for great slapstick comedy. I love all the back-and-forth with the tree and presents, Claire's mean jokes about Luke selling her too much wrapping paper when he was six, the gag about Claire being the Grinch as Haley and Dylan see her dragging a Christmas tree through the streets, Cam's card causing a fire because of all the glitter... all of this stuff was genuinely really funny.
At the same time as all of this chaos, Haley and Dylan are looking for the right time to break the pregnancy news to Phil and Claire. They want Claire to be in a good mood, but that doesn't seem to be happening. Dylan decides to come down the chimney as Santa and give presents to the kids, but he gets stuck, resulting in Haley ripping off the band-aid and telling her whole family about her pregnancy while Dylan is stuck in the fireplace behind her. It goes... pretty well. Phil and Claire both hug her, and while Phil initially seems excited and Claire a little more hesitant, the final shot of the scene shows both Phil and Claire being worried about what the future will bring.
I like that this pregnancy plot thread is following the traditional sitcom beats, without making it some big hysterical production. I like that Haley and Dylan are excited about the baby. Of course Claire and Phil are going to have their worries, but the whole family is supportive of what's coming next for these two. I like that the show is striking a balance. Also, Dylan getting stuck in the chimney is the perfect symbol for his character. He's more than a little stupid, a lot of the time, but his heart's in the right place, and he wanted to do something nice for the kids.
That's all for now! I still haven't heard for sure whether this show is getting another season. I personally want to let it die somewhat gracefully, but there's still some juice in some of these story-lines, so I'm glad to be following along for a bit longer.

Haley/Luke is interesting! Glad someone else picked up on the tension. Makes me wonder though- there were rumors about Nolan and Ariel kissing while on vacation? And I saw a picture where he was very openly staring at her ass. What kind of situations do you imagine Luke/Haley in?

I didn’t hear about those rumors. For so long, Nolan was so much younger. But at some point you reach an age where it doesn’t matter as much anymore.
I feel like now that Luke is in college, the age differences between the Dunphy siblings aren’t really significant anymore, especially since Haley isn’t exactly on a career track or traditional life path yet.
I haven’t spent too much time thinking about scenarios for Luke and Haley. I think what I really like about them is the idea that they might one day just be like, “Wow, we’re both really hot. There’s no good reason not to do this.” I really don’t think Luke would care about incest, though Haley might be concerned with her social image.
With Haley, I could see if Luke started flirting with her in a way that she’s used to and likes, she would probably respond to it the way she normally would. And then it would be a few minutes later and she would be wondering what had just happened.
