Hiya!
Journal Entry #Three coming right up. Ya girl got covid this month! It sucked. I was one of the first of a new wave sweeping Meanjin recently (please wear a mask). I also gave it to my boyfriend which sucked (oh yeah I have a boyfriend now, he's wonderful!). But we're both okay now, testing negative and all that. And yes, I had lots of Jasmine tea to cope.
In other news, I have been doing poetry things! (Shocking, I know). I performed at Ruckus Slam and SpeakEasy again, I went to a few gigs, and I started writing my short story in preparation to perform at the July Gather Round, however due to covid (a few other performers got it too) it has been rescheduled to the 19th of August!
I've also been posting some old poetry FromtheArchives on this very website, and I published a brand new poem that will be appearing in "Love Is A Soup" (read it here!). More of that to come, once I stop coughing!
This month's journal entry is a bit shorter. As you can imagine, most of my month was cut off by covid and I'm still feeling some of its after effects. I'm looking forward to reading more of my poetry at next week's Ruckus Slam and the August SpeakEasy, which my dear friend Natasha will be the feature poet for. And of course I hope to see you at the Fourth Chapter of Gather Round, there are going to be some amazing stories told that night.
Be well and warm and safe from the sickness! I will do my best to do the same.
See you later, alligator ~JLB

Manson told the 1869 inquiry into the Colony's police:
There was no police protection whatever there. The police were down at Sweer's Island . . . and Uhr, when he was in town, was the companion of the whole of them.
He was hail-fellow-well-met with the whole of them?
Yes; and in horse-racing, &c.
Do you think that Mr Landsborough knew of those proceedings in the town?
I do not know how it could be otherwise; but, I think he would be utterly powerless to prevent anything, in the then state of affairs.
Were you a witness to any infraction of the law?
Yes, to the setting fire of the water-closets and so on; and the attack on the black fellow – and fights innumerable. Then, for a week or two, the place would be as quiet and well conducted as the city of Brisbane. It was such a place that – I heard Mr. Sharkey say so – he would not act there as a magistrate.
Have you any notion why?
I think that Uhr would not assist him. Uhr was as much opposed to him as the roughest men in the place could be.

The camp blacks thought differently but the police refused to hear evidence from their leader, Daki Yakka, that Murphy killed two men that night.
