What if Merlin wasn’t supposed to be immortal.
We know he can do magic subconsciously, he states that he was making things float around the room before he could talk. He is literally magic incarnate.
What if it was what Kilgarah said that made him immortal. What if Kilgarah was wrong, but since he told Merlin that Arthur was supposed to return Merlin never died. What if Arthur was never supposed return. So Merlin will wait. He will wait until humanity is nothing more than dust buried in the dirt. Arthur will never return, but by telling Merlin that Arthur would, Kilgarah cursed Merlin to wait.
Merlin will never leave, never let go no matter how long has passed. His hope may dwindle as the millennial pass, but it never dies. He stays on the off chance that if he does come back, he will need his servent. Arthur never could last long without him.
So he waits. Never aging. Never letting go. A false hope given by a manipulative old dragon, but…
If he does let go and Arthur comes back only to find him gone…
No, he will wait, by the edge of what was once a lake so many years ago

Merlin: me or Camelot?
Arthur: no! That’s like asking you to choose between me and magic!
Merlin: you, obviously
Arthur:
Merlin: please stop crying of course I would never make you choose

Merlin who was born blind and uses magic to see. His eyes are actually a light colour, closer to grey, but when using the magic that grants him sight they turn blue.
So, when he looses his magic both in existing plot lines and any other, he has to learn to navigate the world without sight, something he was able to avoid before.
This could be how he tells Arthur, maybe he gets some curse on him or someone uses a magic object to subdue his power and he goes blind once again and ha to tell the Knights that he can’t see without it.

Sometimes I think about how Merlin held Arthur's funeral all by himself. It was a king's funeral, after all. And the king was Camelot's dearly loved King Arthur. His funeral was suppoed to be a big, solemn, ceremonial occasion. In any other kingdom, it would mean the greatest dishonor, for a servant to grant this important role, the burial of the king, to himself. But not in King Arthur's Camelot. Because everyone who knew Merlin and Arthur, any citizen or knight who had seen them day after day around the castle, and any visiting noble who had cared to look, could tell it was different. Everyone who ever knew Arthur and Merlin thought to themselves that day, the king and his servant deserved this last moment together. They deserved to say goodbye.

Headcanon: The fate had always been cruel to Merlin. The fate's main goal in creating Merlin was for him to make Albion great and to make Arthur ‘the once and future king’ with the power of magic.
So, the fate killed anyone who could have threatened Merlin's devotion or love for Arthur. Like Will, his attachment to his old life, Freya, the one he wished to ignore destiny for and run away with, or even Lancelot, whom he trusted the most, even more than Arthur at times. The fate cannot risk him loving anyone more than Authur, that would distract him from his duty. So it twisted his destiny, and made Arthur the only reason for Merlin to keep living.
But it backfired because Merlin grew to love Arthur more than Albion. The love prevented him from making the right decisions for Albion, because he always put Arthur first, even before his other duty, before Albion's greatness and the world. He denied his own magic or even his people, because he thought that was the best way to protect Arthur and to stay by his side. Because more than Emrys the Great who would lead Arthur to become the greatest king, he was just Merlin. Merlin who was stupidly loyal to Arthur and just wanted Arthur to be safe and happy, king or not.
In the end, the fate realised that Merlin would fail to unite Albion, and Camelot would eventually fall, partly because of his mistakes made by his twisted devotion and unbearable love for Arthur.
So, the fate took Arthur away from him as a punishment.

Merlin: I don’t know what’s scarier, the fact that everyone in this kingdom want to run a sword through my heart… or that sometimes… I just wanna let ‘em.

I need more angry Merlin! I need Merlin to accidentally reveal his magic, expecting Arthur to lash out and feel betrayed. I need Arthur to tell Merlin he knew the whole time. I need Merlin to pause, to process what he just said. I need Merlin to realize what he's sacrificed to keep his secret while Arthur let him. I need Merlin to be the one to lash out and tell him this. I need Merlin to be the one to feel betrayed. Arthur knew and he let Merlin continue to lie to him and believe that Arthur hated him. Arthur didn't tell him he knew all in the name of "trust" and "letting Merlin decide when it was best to tell him". I need Merlin to break down at this. How could Arthur not realize how much it hurt Merlin to lie!? How could he be okay with the betrayal while not processing the consequences of that betrayal!? For a good cause or not!? I need Merlin to scream.

For a man who can't die, Merlin aches like he's been killed a million times.
He aches in the mornings when he glances through the window and sees gold beam onto the floor, and thinks of Arthur's hair in the sunlight. He aches in the afternoons when he hears the laughter of children, and thinks of children of Camelot running past him in frenzied joy. He aches in the nights when he is sitting on his armchair and staring into the distance as he realizes that, just like yesterday, he is once again all alone.
Because fate is a cruel thing, and he is destined to wait out an eternity. He pines for several lifetimes for bright blue eyes, and aches with every night he sleeps.
So when Arthur steps out of Lake Avalon on one December day, with his gold hair sticking to his forehead and his body shivering, Merlin can't help but run and cry and ache even harder because oh dear lord for once in his life fate is benevolent, and it has given Arthur back to him.
It takes Arthur a few years before he truly settles. The fact doesn't surprise Merlin, as although Arthur can learn about technological innovations and strange new things such as the Internet, Arthur can never have back Camelot.
Arthur has lost his destiny, and he weeps. Merlin simply holds Arthur and lets his shoulder gets damp, for he had also once lost his own destiny, and had no one to cry into the shoulder of.
Arthur's hair is always messy and his eyes are sunken, but it doesn't bother Merlin one bit. For the past thousand years, holding a warm body and smoothing back golden hair were things he only had in dreams. He treasures every bath he runs for Arthur, and savours every breath he watches Arthur take.
And soon enough, the light slowly returns to Arthur's eyes. Every insult he throws at Merlin is retorted with a playful smirk, and they're still the same Merlin and Arthur that they were back in Arthur's chambers.
Arthur smiles again for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, and Merlin thinks he is the sun.
Arthur kisses him one December day. His lips are cold and his hands are shaking like he had just stepped out of Lake Avalon, and Merlin can't help but cry as he kisses back.
The kiss burns Merlin, and he cries tears that he thought he lost a thousand years ago. He cries and cries and cries, but as Arthur kisses his tears off his cheeks, he has never been so happy.
Because now Merlin wakes with golden hair tickling his neck and sleeps with a warm body next to his. He hears the laughter of children in the afternoons and looks back at Arthur, wondering if they'll have children of their own some day. He sits on armchairs with Arthur's legs tangled in his, and stares at Arthur's lips as he sleeps.
And for the first time in a long time, the man who can't die stops aching.

Arthur held Merlin in the aftermath of the battle of Camlan.
His idiot manservant had appeared out of nowhere and taken a blow meant for the king. A killing blow.
Merlin had been slain by Mordred, and in turn Mordred had been slain by Arthur.
“I did it…. I actually did it” Merlin whispered.
Arthur’s brows knit together in confusion. Merlin had sounded almost… happy?
With a closer look, he saw his friend wasn’t grimacing with pain, instead he was smiling the widest he had ever seen.
With that, Merlin gave a hearty sigh, and closed his eyes for the last time. He had conquered fate itself, and now he could finally rest.

the possibility of unrequited love in merlin absolutely kills me (I love it)
It starts with the original, gwens unrequited love for merlin
Then we move onto more uncertain ones like arthurs love being unreq for gwen at times
But also lances love for her being unreq at times
Then maybe just as arthur and gwen settle into each other- FUCK merlin realises hes in love with arthur and bam unreq
But whats that? Gwaines in love with merlin? But everybody knows nobody will compare to arthur for merlin so BAM another unreq
But also whose to say the silly prince didnt once harbour feelings for the sorcerer? Who he thought was also in love with lance so BAM another unreq for arthur. (Or so he thought)
Or even just JUST as hes dying the king finally realises fuck? Im also lowkey (highkey all consumingly) inlove with merlin! Maybe I tell him? Nvm, I dont think he feels the same, guess ill just say thanks or smth idk but BAM unreq (read: arthurs emotionally stunted and cant read others emotions)
And dont get me started on morganas unreq (?) for gwen
Leon just watches and shakes his head from the sidelines

TW: mentions of torture, talk of scars
Merlin who doesn’t like it when people touch his back. Arthur and Leon notice it first and near instantly when Leon gives him a friendly pat and the boy tenses so hard it’s a surprise his shoulders didn’t pop out of place.
Elyan and Gwen notice it when they invite him over for a late dinner once he and Gwen are finished with their duties and he refuses to press his back to the chair.
Gwaine figures it out on the first day, with it being him who tells Lancelot and Percival about it. Lance tries to ask the other if it has something to do with his magic, but upon Merlin’s face going cold and a shadow of fear crossing his eyes, he promises not to bring it up again.
They all just know not to touch his back or anywhere on his torso or even his upper legs, there’s bo need to question it both because they respect his boy dies and, well… they’re scared of what the answer might be.
It’s when Merlin gets hit in an ambush that the truth of it is revealed.
The gash along his side is not all that deep, but the cowardly bandits who attacked had laced their blades with poison. With no choice, they remove his jacket and shirt to properly clean out the wound as best they can.
There are a few gasps, a lot of purposeful ignored tears, but they all steel their nerves and pretend not to see the vicious scars on his body. None of them could deny the sight, try as they might, not when the scars were big and jagged and so clearly from some kind of whip. They tried not to look at the ladder like lines across his stomach, going up to his lower pecks before turning into vicious swirls that seemed to mock the Druid mark.
It was useless.
Merlin was conscious enough to tell them what to put on his wound, to order them to make him drink as much as he could so wash what they could out of his system. He told them to find a river for him to lay in as the fever broke, which they did.
No one said a thing about the burns littering his legs.
When he awoke with full consciousness, he knew instantly that they had seen even though he had been given clothes. If they weren’t different to what he had been wearing, maybe he wouldn’t have.
Alas, their saddened eyes gave it away.
It’s Arthur who asks, “Merlin… who did this to you?”
Merlin cries openly, always refusing to hide his tears unlike every other man, he spews apologies over and over. Even as Lance and Gwaine hold him close he continues, ignoring their assurances that it’s okay until eventually he answers.
“It was Uther. He found out my father was a dragon lord. He only spared me because he wanted to see a dragon lord become a slave.”
Arthur’s tears join his in the soil.

"You feel all that?" But it's TDotD pt1, and this time Merlin is the one saying it, in parallel to Arthur asking the same question in The Disir.
"All those jokes about you being a coward... I never really meant any of them. I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met." He then adds that he's always considered Merlin his best friend, despite playing it off constantly, and he doesn't understand how can there be secrets between them at a time like this. His face reads the deepest disappointed Merlin has ever seen in it. Almost as if he was not as much disappointed in Merlin as in himself. Arthur turns back at the door to face him one last time. "I thought I had earned your trust. I'm sorry if I hadn't... Because I trust you with everything I have." And Merlin is too stunned to speak, but for a moment he forgets his guilt for not going to battle together with Arthur to take in his friends words. "You feel all that?" he rasps eventually. But Arthur was already deep in the maze of the castle's corridors and the door had long since closed. Merlin stood still in the middle of the king's wide chambers and he felt smaller than an ant.
