Happy 19th birthday to this special boy. Unfortunately he fell madly in love with me the last time I visited him and has become insufferable </3

TRIGGER WARNING: non-bloody bird bites
Some people don’t talk about the reality behind the screen in regard to owning and/or fostering parrots — especially the large cuddly ones we all see.
Rico, my Moluccan Cockatoo foster, is the sweetest most cuddly bird I have ever met, but even he has his bad days. Birds are like people and even they can PMS, wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or get fussy for whatever other reason.
Rico had never bitten me before, and this was very out of the blue. He had a bad couple hormonal days suddenly and decided to take a few comps.
Parrots are non-domesticated animals. Farm fowl, canaries, and Pigeons are the only domesticated bird.

Creature Awaits #242
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
The Pantone color of the year is "Peach Fuzz", so we'll dive into the second month of this relatively new year by featuring creatures of this cozy, comforting color. : )

The Moluccan Cockatoo
A.K.A: The Salmon-Crested Cockatoo
Scientific Name: Cacatua moluccensis
Region: Seram Island of Indonesia originally, though it is an introduced species to Oahu, Hawaii
Size: About 1.5'-1.7' (~46cm-52cm) tall
Interesting Notes: This pale peach parrot boasts one of the loudest calls of any bird worldwide at up to over 120dB - loud enough to possibly damage someone's hearing and comparable to a thunderclap or fireworks.
Sadly, this highly-intelligent, sociable and gentle bird's numbers in the wild sharply declined due an abundance of illegal unauthorized capture for the pet trade; however, protective efforts have been put in place to hopefully help these wild populations recover over time. (…Hopefully soon!)

Another character for a post-apocalypse story project. Atisha is the daughter of Tavern owner Mr. Erlenmeyer the crow. Originally born as a forest dweller, Atisha was taken in by the crow after her family perished in a wildfire along with her tribe. She has since become wholly integrated into the civilized society. She lives in the tavern and works alongside Mr. Erlenmeyer.

Birds can be affectionate and fun pets to have, especially when that bird is a Moluccan cockatoo. Not only are these birds intelligent and entertaining, but they are also quite beautiful to behold. These lovely birds do have certain needs and characteristics, however, which should be well known before making the decision to bring them into your home.

We were never told why Rico lost two toes, but I call that foot his lil bipedal 🥰
He has no mobility issues or balance issues, and has adapted so well you’d never even notice unless you saw pictures of the missing toes.
This is unfortunately a somewhat common thing to see in captive older rescue birds, especially larger parrots. It can happen for various reasons, most commonly getting them stuck on cages or toys, or even them getting chomped by other parrots if they are on another one’s cage.
Based on the fact Rico’s toes are entirely healed and cause no nerve pain, I am sure it happened years ago.
