You know, what I find interesting is apparently how well Rachel managed to hide his homicidal impulses (up until he didn’t).

Spoilers for up to ch25, MS: Ramge, MS: Rudley, MS: Athlon.

Look at this unstable Stepford Smiler go.

If you knew a guy could get murderous over hair triggers, you’d probably leave well enough alone. And the fact that a number of people engaged with him in ways which triggered this response without preparing for the fallout shows what a liar Rachel has been for most of his life.

In ch24, I think Rachel’s typical easy-going, smiling manner gave Nemeris the impression that Rachel would just agree to whatever demands Nemeris was making (’yeah I know my mom killed our dad and your mom so I could have the throne, think we could let bygones be bygones? I mean if you also want the throne we can throw the country into upheaval and split it into two new countries, I’m ok with that!’), and so he was pretty surprised pikachu when Rachel just offed his head after he ignored Rachel’s warnings to stay out of the way.

Rachel didn’t have any particular beef with Nemeris (thus the whole ‘I’ll return as your brother’ line), but I think Rachel’s insouciant personality previously indulged in whatever Nemeris wanted, which gave Nemeris a sense of hubris inflated by his own naivete. It’s pretty obvious though that Rachel didn’t really care about Nemeris (his language was very casual, lacking all decorum for an elder). Which is why he didn’t care what Nemeris did as long as Nemeris stayed out of the way. And ultimately why he didn’t have qualms about using Nemeris to get his revenge. (Le roi est mort, vive le roi!)

This subterfuge about his worst impulses are also why it seemed like the Generals, and even Carrie, were pretty shocked by how drastic his actions were. Carefree Rachel, who always smiles and is pleasant and friendly, being so ruthless without any hesitation or qualms? More likely than you think! Carrie had some idea that Rachel’s temper would make him act rashly, which is why she goaded him on, but she thought it was just cause he was a commoner’s vulgar whelp. She didn’t realize the depths of his cruelty, which is something I think he always kept very, very quiet, as he very, very quietly honed it against the many attempts on his life. Only John Donk knew, and maybe Emma. Both are pretty dead(ish).

I don’t think it’s a side of himself Rachel particularly likes (his 'I'm not a good person' line in the Christmas core raid), but it’s a side he knows is necessary to survive, which is why it comes out when he’s triggered by his trauma (inability to protect what he loves) or feels threatened himself (aka you see it in the game battles).

In Ramge’s MS, where Xiakhan talks about the rumors about Rachel, it’s more about Rachel’s own impulsive “I do what I want, I have a permit” brattiness than his murder issues. There seems to be a hint that maybe there might be more blood involved in those impulses, but Xiakhan doesn’t seem to take that part seriously, probably disarmed by Rachel’s own insouciant behavior.

Until Xiakhan goaded Rachel too far. The player is only given the impression of the murderous intent (”Please continue. Then you’ll see what happens when I do what I want.”) and Rudley shows up to interrupt and nothing else is mentioned on that confrontation. For now.

But in MS: Rudley, we are given an extra scene about it: Baraka and Rudley noticed (and I don’t doubt everyone else but Ramge did too) and discussed the murderous intent when Rudley then makes this observation:

I still love this caption. And not just for the line after about the scar on Rachel’s heart (w), but because of the commentary about how Rachel’s heart reflects others instead of himself.

Rachel is stated and shown to be outgoing and charismatic because of his easygoing, friendly personality; he’s loved by his people and gets along with most and inspires lot of loyalty among all walks and types. He has a lot of natural leadership qualities and embodies a sense of justice which ignores a lot of lines set by society.

It gives the appearance of being very empathetic; however, Rudley’s statement is pretty telling in that Rachel’s empathy isn’t cause he feels for the other person. He doesn’t put himself in their shoes. He walled himself off, so his empathy is a mirror. And I think that’s why he’s able to hide so well his homicidal tendencies. The game essentially says he knows how to act and react by showing people what they want to see; he’s the guy you find out is a murderer but all his neighbors insist on what a nice guy he was before the ugly truth came out.

As an aside, I think this is (one reason) why he leeched onto Ramge so well. Ramge is empathetic, but it’s because he’s so eager to please and be validated that he’s sensitive to others and adjusts to please them, whereas Rachel is the opposite, where he clutches himself so close that it seems like he understands others because he never reveals any of his own thoughts. The two are really alike, and where they're different is where they feed off each other. (Also why I think the story had Ramge had a change of heart and go back to his father. They had to isolate the two.)

Worst thing about all this is that I think Rachel is a genuinely decent, kind, and selfless person, and it shows when he’s with the people he cares about. But kind people often are the most vulnerable, and his coping with his trauma left him one hell of a mess, and, going by MS: Athlon, his own bloodline is also working against him. So he’s pretty fucked up and he’s made some fucked up decisions, and it’s not looking too good for him because this game is very big on karmic retribution.

And really, I don’t think Rachel cares; he’s given up on having a good, happy life a long time ago.

WELL ANYWAY, I’m just hoping the writers grant my wish: let Ramge save him. ahahaha XD It can even be tragic! Just give me the good food!
