Recently read an article that talked about a college student waiting for a ride home after school finished for the year (at least in a physical sense) due to the coronavirus. She was just playing the guitar while, in her words, the world ended. Although the world isn’t truly ending (look through history; the human race has dealt with plagues forever), it sure can seem like it. When I read those words, I was reminded of this scene from the 1986 movie, Labyrinth, with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. It’s such a really weird, surreal scene set to David Bowie’s song “As the World Falls Down,” which I believe he wrote for the film’s soundtrack. The confusion and initially dreamlike, later nightmarish, quality kind of mirrors what is going in the world right now. On a more positive note, the quote from the article speaks to the calming power of music to soothe the savage beast. Tagging a bunch of fellow artists / musicians - we can’t stand together physically due to distance (and, well, infection control), but we can virtually - like a lot of the world right now :). If not for things like art and music to bring color and a bit of healthy distance from the harshness of the world, we’re left with human drama, sickness, chaos, and there’s enough of that in day to day life.
