How many works do you have on ao3? 1,559 - which I believe is 1,208 podfic, 179 vids, and 163 fics

What's your total Ao3 word count? 615,783

What fandoms do you create for? I have works in 450 fandoms so I’m not listing them all so here are top couple of fandoms by work-type: - Vid: Nirvana in Fire, The King: Eternal Monarch, and 9-1-1 - Podfic: Yuri on Ice, Teen Wolf, and The Raven Cycle - Fic: Smallville, Stargate Atlantis, and Gundam Wing

Top 5 Works by Kudos: Fics dominate sorting by kudos so here's top two of each category: - Fic: The Rock and The River this Spirited Away fic wins out by a large margin, bubbling up is another Spirited Away fic and in second place. - Vid: Bury a Friend is my most kudos’d vid (Untamed) and Applause is second most kudos (Untamed RPF) though that is my most-watched vid on YT. - Podfic: through a window softly by impossibletruths, an Untamed fic for which I did a lot of music mixing is my top kudos’d podfic, so much so that it actually gets in my AO3 top 5 kudos list which is wild. The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli is in second place.

Do you respond to comments? I try!

What is the work you've made with the angstiest ending? - Fic: All my fics are neutral or positive endings (I think?) - Vid: this TKEM AU where Yeong dies - Podfic: I enjoy narrating big emotions so I have a lot of people-cry-in-this-fic grief/angst and self worth issues stories but often they end on at least an uplifting note. Possibly something in Attack on Titan or X-Men had a and-they-stay-sad ending but I can’t remember something specific to for-sure point at.

What's the work you've made with the happiest ending? So many happy endings (both the emotional kind and the porn kind). I’m not sure I could point to a ‘happiest’ since a lot of them are very happy.

Do you get hate on your works? I’ve had some weird comments but not particularly hate, hopefully that will continue to be true.

Do you create smut? Yup, at least with podfic and fic.

Craziest crossover? I wrote a heralds of valdemar / lord of the rings fic when I was just starting out in fandom.

Have you ever had a work stolen? I hope not.

Have you ever had a work inspired by your works? Very excitingly, people have made vids inspired by my vids which is the absolute coolest thing (Nothing by @nubreed73, and Mei Changsu is Climbing the Mountain by @sandalwoodbox)

I have had fic translated, which is neat.

People have made podfics of my fic which is just delightful and makes me so, so happy as a fellow podficcer.

I've also had people make me fanart/coverart which is super cool!

Have you co-recorded/co-written/co-vidded before? I’ve done a podfic collab where we co-wrote the story together and then recorded the story together. I’ve been part of multivoice collabs of things I did not participate in writing for with both in-person/live recording and recorded separately then edited together. I’ve also done oral not!fic collabs.

All time favorite ship? I can't decide. I tend to have one OTP per fandom I'm into, but see fandom list it's too long to pick just one ship.

What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I’ve got a variety of old files for fics I never got a permission response on that will just live in my computer forever. Some are complete, some needing editing, some are partially completed and all abandoned due to lack of response. I learned my lesson and now do not record unless I have already received permission or the author has BP.

What are your podficcing/writing/vidding strengths? - Podfic: Consistency? Enthusiasm. Emotion (I hope).

- Vid: Picking decent songs?

What are your podficcing/writing/vidding weaknesses? - Podfic: Accents, words not in english, cover art.

- Writing: Doing it without a challenge/exchange

- Vid: I don't know how to do a lot of technical stuff so I'm sort of coasting on my current skill level without challenging myself much.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? For podfic I try! Sometimes I don’t know what I don’t know (see past mispronunciation of French where I thought I knew what I was doing T_T). But having been in into anime, c-dramas, k-dramas, and a variety of fandoms with various languages involved I know I will give it my best shot, possibly fail, and it will take me 2-3x as long to record, but sometimes I can be proud of what I’ve come up with on the far end and that’s nice. Forvo, google translate, and finding friends/acquaintances I know who speak the language have all be helpful.

First fandom you podficced/wrote in/vidded? - Podfic: Spiderman/Smallville crossover: 2008.

- Fic: Heralds of Valdemar

Favorite work you've made? - Podfic: The Ion Arc by Sunhawk - I started recording this Gundam Wing story in 2008 and finished in 2019 and it clocks in at over 80 hours. This was my labor of love for just over a decade and will always hold a very important place in my heart. Have I re-listened to it, no. Do I think it’s the best podfic I’ve ever made, probably not, doesn’t matter, still my favorite. - Vid: I’m not sure how to pick so I’ll just go with my co-vid with @sandalwoodbox Hug Cats! - Fic: I’ll follow the consensus and say The Rock and The River for this.

I can't stop screaming about Paava Kaidhagal enough, and this episode was so emotional. I love this song so much, and it is a beautiful song but I still feel so much pain listening to this. When this starts playing on shuffle, it always a bittersweet feeling.

Of course I was gonna include this. There is no way I was gonna leave this out. It is my baby's song from my fave series. It is special. I still remember not being able to process the song when it came out during episode 11. Like I could not watch the MV after the episode. It was such an emotional attack. I would have also included Just Friend?, but I could not find the rock version the both of them did for OhmNanon1stFM. That version of Just Friend was always be on another level!

The whole CQL soundtrack is beautiful. But this is my favourite song from the OST. Yibo's voice is just so beautiful and it goes straight to your heart. He brings out LWJ's emotions so beautifully.

This might be cheating. But I do love Come Closer alot, and I love this mashup version of it so much. So I am linking this. Ford's voice texture is so similar to Tay's. So I love that they did this. I lost my mind when I heard it on the stream.

Moving to Mumbattan was a huge change. With your Dad in the Navy SEALS you’d gotten used to moving around frequently, never in one place for too long, however, this station seemed like it would last longer than the others. It was scary and you were scared shitless, in a strange new place that seemed to be plagued with bumper-to-bumper traffic, the first thing on your mind was how people would receive you. Sure you’d lived in many places, however not all of them were as accepting of Black girls as they could be. You’d fried your hair down to the roots, essentially forcing yourself to press it every Sunday before the new week of school, and then decided to big chop. Like, big chop, full send, and shave all your hair off. Was it the best choice to shave it all off in a predominantly white Deep South? Fuck no. But it was the push you needed. That was two or three years ago, and your hair had grown back, thick, full, bouncy, and kinky, growing to just under your triple-pierced ears.

This move felt different though. You were much more jittery.

“Dad, my stomach hurts, do I have to go today? Can’t I start tomorrow?”

“Listen soldier, if you’re gonna do something, do it scared,”

“But Dad–”

“No buts kiddo, you have your uniform all ironed out?”

“Yes, sir,”

“And starched?”

“Oh jeez, Dad do you want me to look like an old lady?”

“See, you’re sassy still. You’re fine,”

“But–”

“What’s this about?”

“What if they don’t like my hair?”

“Your hair looks fine,”

“Yeah to you! You’re bald,”

“Why wouldn’t they like your hair?”

“Cus it’s… different,”

“I got clippers in the bathroom…”

“Nevermind,”

Still terrified, and anxiously gulping down the last dregs of orange juice, you pull off your bonnet and carefully inspect the lemonade braids, intricately patterned into a heart on either side of your head. Like Beyonce, you thought. Pulling the bonnet back onto your head, you grab the Mumbattan Visions Academy uniform from the hook on the bedroom door. Carefully selecting a pair of shoes, you go with navy blue retro space jams you got on a raffle, and you reappear at the bedroom mirror. Once again tugging off your bonnet, you frown at the untamed baby hairs framing your hairline. Applying a thin layer of Vaseline and sunscreen, you delicately lay down your baby hairs and fluff your eyelashes with mascara.

After what felt like hours of traffic, you arrive on campus. Horrified, you sink down in the passenger seat under your Dad’s laser glare.

“Isn’t there another school?”

“No. Go,”

“But–”

“Now.”

No room for arguments. You knew better.

“Thai food for dinner?”

“Yeah, Dad.” You smile weakly. “Thai food sounds good.”

“Do it scared, kid, do it scared.”

And then he’s off.

“Hi!”

Jumping out of your skin you turn around, eyes wide with a mixture of fright and nerves

“I’m Gayatri!” she says, sticking her hand out and beaming.

“Cool piercings,”

“Thanks, yours too!”

Half self-conscious, half flattered, you grab your earlobes and blush.

“Are you new here?”

“Yeah,”

“Welcome,”

“Thanks,”

“You’re not one for talking, are you? That’s okay, I talk plenty.”

Eagerly she snatches your hand and pulls you through the crowd of students, waving every so often.

“So, do you have your schedule?”

Nodding your head and mumbling a yeah you unfold the sheet of paper in the pocket of your polo skirt.

“Nice, we have almost every class together, except these three, but don’t worry, my friend Pavitr has these classes with you. He’s cool don’t worry,” She says, almost motherly, and begins standing on her tiptoes trying to survey the crowd. Confused, you mirror her movements, your toe caps slightly poking your pinky toes. She frantically starts to wave, you don’t mirror this movement.

“Pav! Over here!”

She practically bellows across the courtyard, the other students paying absolutely no attention to her abrupt screaming. A tall-ish boy begins to weave through the crowd, gently ‘excuse me’-ing his way through the crowd.

“Pav, this is my new best friend,”

“Replacing me already?”

“Oh, shut up,”

“Hi, I’m Pavitr.”

And the connection is almost instant.

but i don’t mind it

“Pav,” you mumble from under him, his body weight fully on top of you as you watch an old Bollywood movie he swears by. “My dad’s gonna be home soon.”

“Just five more minutes, Chittu,”

“You’ve never met a bald military man, have you?”

“He can’t be that bad,”

“Oh, my–”

You’re interrupted by the heavy steps, no doubt the hefty combat boots your father wears, coming down the hallway to the apartment.

“Pav, get off!” you whisper, shoving him off you, pulling him you're the half-moved-in bedroom the both of you tripping over empty boxes.

“Nice shoe collection,”

“Thanks,” you whisper-shout, pulling him closer to your bay window, fighting to get the fire-escape window open.

“I’m home!” Your father’s voice booms through the apartment. Scrambling with the window and finally getting it open, you frantically motion for him to climb out the fire escape, fear pulsing through your veins.

“Meri Jaan, why don’t you just introduce me to your dad?” he whispers pointedly, admittedly feeling a bit ashamed of sneaking around. But it wasn’t like the two of you were official yet, he’ll officially officially ask you out soon in a way to appease your father. No matter how difficult

“As much as I’d like to, it doesn’t quite work like that Babycakes,”

He cocks his head to the side, slightly pausing, at the use of the word ‘babycakes’.

“Southern thing, tell you about it later, get out,” you motion, still scared out of your mind, brain moving at a thousand miles per second, heart beating out of your chest. “Promise,”

“[NAME],” your father bellows

“Coming, Daddy!” you call back “Out.”

This time, you take no prisoners and gently push him out onto the fire escape. As he climbs down he pauses, pouting as you halfway close the window. Begrudgingly, you lean out and peck a quick kiss onto his lips, and then he nimbly, and incredibly quickly climbs down the fire escape.

“...And Mr, er, Lieutenant Jean-Baptiste, with your blessing, I would really like for your daughter to be my girlfriend.”

Your father sighs, the vein in the center of his forehead pronounced, and rubs his eyes.

“Prabahakar, you do realize that I am still in uniform?” This was entirely true, his medals proudly pinned to the breast pocket of his blue fatigues, your last names carefully etched into his left breast pocket, feet still clad in heavy combat boots.

“Daddy–”

“Hush, girl. Prabahakar?”

“Yes sir,”

“And I am tired,”

“Yes, sir, I can’t even imagine,”

“You cannot even begin to imagine,” he menacingly places both hands on the round kitchen table, standing. He has a good two feet on Pav.

He gulps.

Your father sighs again, eyes darting between you.

“You understand how important my daughter is to me?”

“Yes, Lieutenant,”

“What are your intentions with my daughter?”

“I–”

“Because let me find out she’s cooking a little you in her oven, it will not be a good day for you Prabahakar, I promise,”

“Daddy–”

“Hush. Do you understand me?”

Pav gulps again, clearly terrified to have gone down this route of asking permission, though he knew for a fact telling would have been worse.

“Yes, Lieutenant,”

Your father sighs warily, taking a look at your wide and hopeful eyes, then a glance at the sheer anxiety rolling off of Pavitr’s body. Breathing heavily, he rubs his cheeks. Sweet defeat.

“Her curfew during the week is 21:30. Strictly, no foolishness. On weekends I want her back exactly at 22:30. No ifs ands or buts.”

You smile something terrible and rush to hug your father.

“Thank you thank you thank you,”

Later, as the two of you are sitting on the fire escape watching the sun goes down he nudges you.

“So, your family's pretty old-fashioned then, huh?”

as long as you agree to stay old-fashioned with me.

Twenty questions for fic writers

I saw @alightbuthappypen do a writing meme and I wanted in, dammit.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

92, apparently. I could not have begun to guess this amount without checking. I would have said that I’ve posted way less than that to AO3, but it does include everything I ever posted on livejournal.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

406,924.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I am belatedly realising that writing this will be an exercise in revealing the daft ways my brain works. I was about to say “I tend to only write one fandom at a time,” but that simply isn’t true; I tend to write whatever my distractable brain presents me with, and I feel like I have little to no control over what my brain latches on to. I am currently editing a few fics from The Witcher, specifically the Netflix show, though I can’t help but mix some game canon in too. I have previously written about Good Omens (both the book, waaaaaaayyy back when, and then also the show kicked off some fic years later), the IT movies, Our Flag Means Death, Teen Wolf, Star Trek, The Musketeers, The Untamed a little bit… and a lot more I'm forgetting. I gain and drop fandoms quickly, and never end up writing an awful lot in each.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

It depends when they catch me. If they come in within a week or so of me posting, then I gleefully respond. After that, it depends. I read all of them, obviously – I read and re-read comments when my mood needs a boost – but if a little time has passed, I either feel weird about replying (?why? I can’t figure it out beyond brain daftness), or I simply forget (my memory is a joke). I literally always love a comment, though.

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oh, hmm, I’m not much for writing angst. Uh… I’ve just scrolled through all my fics and I’m shrugging. I guess there’s an X-Men Charles/Erik fic called Cold Reunion where they meet after the divorce and bitch at each other a bit… that might be the closest I get. Oh, or the only Witcher fic I’ve posted so far (The Song of the White Wolf) is very much about Jaskier being in what he believes to be unrequited love with Geralt, and nothing gets resolved at the end, because it is just slotted into a gap between episodes.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I will write and re-write “and then they get together” a billion times, because I’m such a sucker for it. I’d say either Build Our Kingdom, my version of the obligatory Good Omens picnic scene, or maybe L’Appel du Vide, in which Eddie Kaspbrak does some learning and changing in his forties. God, I miss Eddie and Richie.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

LOL one comment on the aforementioned Eddie/Richie fic was about how I’d written Richie to be particularly woobified, I think? But it came, like, eight or nine chapters into a very wordy ten chapter fic, and it cracked me up for how long they’d persevered before snapping. I don’t think it was hate so much as disappointment. I laugh every time I think about it. I can’t think of anything else which comes close to hate.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I used to write smut quite often, but I don’t feel like I’m especially good at it, or that I present it in an interesting way. I don’t think the world is missing out for me not writing it anymore.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I was about to say “no, I haven’t,” but I definitely have. My goddamn memory! I started a Star Trek/Teen Wolf crossover that I did not finish. Whoops! Retroactive apologies to anyone I pissed off by doing that. I have since learned not to post fics until I have finished them completely. I have so many damn WIPs that I have all but abandoned.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nah. Wait, have I? …I have a vague memory of raging about this while I was at university 20 years ago (!) but that’s the only thing I can remember (joke of a memory).

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, a few. Cool!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have! Not for a long, long time now, but there have been a couple.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

Uh, that’s a big question. I feel like I’ve been pretty clear about how quickly I go into and drop out of fandoms at this point. I guess the one I’ve come back to most often is Crowley/Aziraphale? But I don’t love it any more than I love any of my other OTPs, it has just snared me back into writing it more often than the rest. Others of note: Eddie Kaspbrak/Richie Tozier, Wangxian, Yennefer/Jaskier/Geralt (and every permutation therein), Stede Bonnet/Edward Teach (but I haven't even seen season 2 yet), Aramis/Porthos.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

God, I’ve got a Stranger Things Steve/Eddie fic that I just need to sit down and edit properly, and make some decisions about, and it’d be done. And yet here we are, with it still unfinished. Also I have a 14K Crowley/Aziraphale fic that I’d love to actually finish one of these days, but my ideas for it petered out. Probably if I really did some thinking I could write an ending for it, and just be done with it, but it is set after season 1 of the show, and would no longer jive with the canon… I don’t know. Would it be worth it? Who knows?

16. What are your writing strengths?

Uhhhhhhhh. Well, I’ve done Nano twice now, so I guess I can pump words out when I really push myself. And I feel like writing dialogue comes pretty easily to me, though I suppose everyone else is free to disagree!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Description uuuuugggggghhhhhhh. Keeping track of limbs or objects or facial expressions. I feel like I struggle with endings in that I always think they feel abrupt. I’m also fucking terrible at motivating myself and tend to work better with outside motivation (for example, committing to a certain number of words a month – but then how do I make myself edit afterwards? Would love to know!).

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I’m barely coherent in English, mate. Everyone else can do as they wish, but if I have to keep scrolling down to see what things mean, I’m clicking away. My attention span sucks.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Oh god. The Beatles, with a sort of dizzy sense of, “Wait, this is allowed?”

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Oh wow, an even bigger question! Uhhhhhhhhhh…? Fucking hell. Probably either L’Appel du Vide, because it basically did everything I wanted it to, or maybe Build Our Kingdom, because I managed to write it clearly enough that I can actually see it happening in my head, which is usually not the case. Does that make sense? I’m not very visual, but I can picture them through my own words more easily than I managed to do in other fics. Stupid! Those fics are certainly the two I re-read most often.

Luckily this vidder saw the potential and created a vid with this song where the lyrics are used to their full potential to tell their story from lwj’s perspective. Notes: “I know you’re somewhere out there, somewhere far away I want you back” – cue shot of lwj and jc searching for wwx during those three months. Hello, yes, very good.

WangXian ► How did I lose it when I was right there? by puremurasaki Music: Home - Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors, Bebe Rexha Mood: “Someone take me home, show me the way” Strength(s): Some really good editing on the beat (which works Very Well for this song) with some nice bits of colouring soft (and b&w at points) with some effects that also work well with the music. There is also some really good choices in terms of which moments to put together (lwj being beaten and wwx leaving the burial mounds injured after the wen left, oof) and arranged one after the other Notes: I am not sure where to put this one because it is neither too sad, nor too cheesy for once.

Our Fairy Tale (The Untamed) by NKZephyr Edits Music: Tong Hua (Fairy Tale) - Guang Liang (童話 - 光良) Mood: cheesy is cheesy Strength(s): they are so cheesy, they need a cheesy video and this one with its soft and deep colouring with a song which is very much about them and the editing reflects the lyrics and their relationship very well. It’s cheese, but with knives. Notes: sometimes what you need is a cheesy song (and when I say cheesy, I mean cheesy) with moments attacking you like every time the chorus to the sound of “I want to be that angel you love inside the fairytale” with images of wwx being hurt and lwj being there not able to do much because pain in the cheesiness.
