Of Art & Augury: An Interactive Fiction WIP
Genre: Historical Fantasy Format: Text-based interactive fiction Tags: Text-based, historical fiction, romance, fantasy/magic, art and artists, late 19th century Paris Current Status: Drafting (NaNoWriMo 2023 Project)
Synopsis
As a writer for one of the top Parisian society gazettes, you've advised many readers about the up-and-coming artists of the Paris Salon. The best painters there know how to weave subtle enchantments into the likeness of their subject to make the image come to life but, recently, something had been going wrong with the magic. It's up to you to head to the academy and figure out to truth for yourself.
Setting
Set in Paris at the end of the 19th century, you will explore the city and the art exhibitions of the academy. This version of Paris has an undercurrent of magical power which artists use to create enchanted artwork for society.

Odette [F]
Occupation: Commercial Lithographer Artistic Inspiration: Alphonse Mucha Odette is an Austrian artist who moved to Paris to start her career as an artist. Sainte [M]
Occupation: Journalist Artistic Inspiration: Édouard Manet Sainte was born in Paris and studied under a successful portrait artist from a young age, but left his studies to pursue journalism for reasons he doesn't like to talk about. Now, he works as an art critic for a Parisian newspaper, covering the Salon and other exhibitions.
Armand [M]
Occupation: Portrait Artist Artistic Inspiration: John Singer Sargent Armand has been passionate about art for most of his life and moved to Paris from New Orleans to start his studies when he was still young. Helene [F]
Occupation: Socialite Artistic Inspiration: Berthe Morisot Helene is a Parisian socialite who fell in love with painting during her private art education growing up. Although her family encouraged her to keep painting, they refused to let her receive any education in enchantment, a requirement for being taken seriously in artistic society. WIP INTRO (nano, 2023): Herald at Dawn
Title: Herald at Dawn (title subject to change)
Genre: Steampunk fantasy murder mystery
Status: Planning & Draft 0, will be done for nano 2023 with a goal of 25k words (counting every word for double on the website cause I can't set my own goal)
Pov: Third person limited, multiple POV
Setting: A steampunk city called Volimere
Universal TW/CW: Arson, murder, corruption, legal systems being really really shit at their job, implied homophobia
Plot: An article is published in the daily newspaper The Clockwork Herald, revealing corruption in the court/legal system of the city, written by investigative reporter Alex McLelland, focused specifically on the Ekker trial, 11 years previously. Four days later someone turns up dead. Later that week, another body is found. Both of them were witnesses in the article she wrote, although no one was named. This is, as you might expect, something of a problem, because one by one, each witness is getting picked off, found dead at home or the victim of ''a tragic accident'', as ruled by the police.
Main Characters:
Alexandrina "Alex" McLelland. 30, she/her, aroace. Investigative reporter at The Clockwork Herald and the narrator for this story!
Asa Tylers. Early 30s/late 20s, he/him, bisexual. Alex's best friend and the person who does the art for a couple of the newspaper articles.
James Blakely. 32, he/him, gay, editor at the Herald. Alex's childhood friend.
León "Leo" Rivera. 33, he/him, gay, writer at the Herald, does the page on politics, was a witness in Alex's article & was the original reporter at the Herald for the Ekker trial. 1/4 fae.
Nathaniel Ekker. 23, he/him, queer, tailor. Was a witness in Alex's article and is the son of the woman whose murder was the focus of the Ekker trial.
Taglist maintained below the cut! Ask to be added or removed!

So. I definitely want to try to do NaNo this year. Originally, I planned on doing Hell's Casino because I know where it starts and ends pretty thoroughly. HOWEVER. I have another writing idea that won't get out of my head that I'm now thinking about doing. So you know what that means! POLL TIME!

“Nah. Magic makes us brave,” he said. “And if they aren’t mages, then they aren’t your peers,” he said with a shrug. “Magic makes ya brave, and strong. Even a weak mage is stronger than they realize, because it takes a lot of heart, and a strong soul, to learn magic. That’s what Gramps says anyway.”
Lucy reached into the pouch she kept strapped to her thigh and drew out a golden key. She stroked her finger over the cerulean lines that decorated it. “I like that a lot,” she murmured.
Natsu admired the way light and love filled her face as she looked at the key.
“Show me,” he prompted, nodding to the key when she cocked her head curiously.
She blushed slightly. “I’ve never introduced anyone to her before… I’m not sure how well she would react. She can be difficult on the best of days.” She took a deep breath when he looked undeterred. “All right, but I warned you.”
Natsu chuckled and watched her slide down to the lower ledge of the rock where she could reach the water. Dipping the key’s tip into the water, she called out, “Open, Gate of the Water Bearer. Aquarius.”
She sat back and braced herself. A flash of golden light momentarily illuminated the area and Aquarius appeared with her arms crossed under her bust.
“What could you possibly want from me?” she asked, glaring down at the girl. “I’m busy, so I don’t have time to play with you today.”
Lucy smiled up at her from the rock. “I’m glad to see you, either way,” she said.
Natsu shifted into his squat again and grinned. “That was awesome! Where did she even come from?”
Aquarius’s eyes snapped up to him, then back to Lucy. “That’s not your fiancé. Boyfriend?” she asked teasingly.
Lucy huffed. “I’m married now. And he’s my bodyguard.”
“And friend,” he interjected, grinning at the blush that filled her cheeks.

NaNoWriMo is officially over, but I'm not done!
Tumblr media
In the month of November, I managed to write 102,179 words for Purely Symbiotic. This is 204.36% of the 50K goal NaNo sets out!
Tumblr media
I'm so proud of this progress. It looks like that November 20th and 21st were my biggest writing days. 16,685 words over two days!
Tumblr media
I also hit all of those writing badges which was very satisfying to do. Updating 1,667 words a day is not easy when you work better in spurts instead of consistency.
Tumblr media
The personal achievement badges were fun too. Fun fact, I cried twice over my novel, and they both consisted of gender moments!
So.......... what now?
We still are aiming for 240K words and 80 chapters, dividing into three 80K, 20 chapter parts. Right now, I'm in the depths of part 2. I've also started a new goal on the NaNoWriMo website.
Tumblr media
The novel will *tentatively* be done by the end of January. If it takes me about 1 month to write 100K words, then it will be done sometime in mid-January. To avoid burnout and to give some leniency for myself, I just rounded up to January 31st. From there, February will be all reviewing and editing, and then finally.... FINALLY we will be posting to A03!
Why not post part 1 now?
The answer is that I'm a perfectionist, and I love foreshadowing. Just recently I found a quite big plot hole in the middle of writing part 2 and had to go back and fix some sections in part 1. I would not have been able to do this if part 1 was already uploaded. I can't imagine this not happening when I reach part 3, ESPECIALLY since I'm at the point where I no longer have a draft to reference because I'm so far into the story. Additionally, there are some heavy editing and proofreading needed. I might post snippets to gauge interest and get people excited for the drop date once we get closer to the end. I've even been thinking about making a video trailer too because... why not? It be fun. :)

I got you now.

   Gauntle 3 << Huh? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Thought one of you two talked to me on private comms. >>
Gauntle 3 << Nope. No privacy enabled. Just the usual radio chatter. >>
Your name is Jean-Michel du Rembrandt, isn’t it? I will need your help.
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Who are you? >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Wrench, you alright man? >>
Born in Scythia, raised on southern Gaulloiserie… Holy Maker, your world is beautiful! I’ve never seen so much greenery before! I’ve had seen your banners, and your masks, and always thought Scythia was a land of volcanoes and ash. So the Maker wasn’t putting up illusions after all…
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Tinker, perform an analysis on my comms; I might be compromised. >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Wilco, gimme a sec! >> << ... >> << All systems nominal, Wrench! >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Ugh. Think it might be that Starchild messing with us? >>
Gauntle 3 << I feel fine on my end. You want to disengage and return to Prolithe, Gauntle 7? >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I-
I’m fine. Just radio chatter messing up my rhythm. I’ll deal with it.
   Gauntle 3 << Aaaaaaalright. Look alive, Jean-Michel. >>
I will need your help, Jean-Michel. It is a big request, however,
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << W-will do, Gauntle 3. >>
Do not be alarmed. We will speak in private – and face to face – from now on.
   Jean-Michel << Who the hel- >> << W-where am I? >>
This is a safebox we’re in. Time is immobile. Space is immaterial. It is only you and me in here. Nothing can reach us, nothing can harm us, and we got time to discuss the battle lying ahead. The battle against the Maker. He is wounded now; I incapacitated Him, but I don’t know for how long. So, I am looking to find a way to kill Him.
But I first want to apologize for your friends. Believe me, I did not want things to go this way. But things are very fucked up, as you can tell.
Jean-Michel << I am guessing the correct question to ask is not “who” but “what” are you – am I guessing correctly? >>
You are being pretentious. I am no god. My name is Mallik. I am a ratlung from Tabora, the planet below whose god now awakened, and whose god you’ve come to take over.
Jean-Michel << So this starchild is... your god? >>
Used to be. My mother used to believe in Him. My grandmother too.
He killed them both.
Jean-Michel << I am sorry for your loss, ma’am. I am the sole survivor of my family as well now. >>
I am well aware, Jean-Michel. I am sorry I could not save your brother. Timespace is tricky; I know it’s of little consolation to you now, but god damn it I tried! Believe me.
Jean-Michel << ...It’s fine. >> << It’s clear you got a lot on your plate, and you’re only just getting used to things. Not every day your god turns out to be real and shares their powers with you personally, only to then betray you, I hazard. >> << But, still, I got to ask you: >> << Why should I trust you? What do you need a random scythian cosmonaut like me for? >> << ... >> << Your abilities far surpass mine – and I’m not even a high ranking officer or anything of sorts. I cannot command, I cannot lead. I am just your typical spaceboy, like you said earlier. It baffles me, if I may be frank with you, ma’am. >>
When I was a kid, I dreamed to fly. I tried to join the academies in the Strip. And each and every time, I would surely be rejected. Heh. Funny thing that.
Jean-Michel << Heh. Didn’t think you had aspirations to be a spaceboy too. >> << Or spacegirl more like. >>
What can I say? Flying is cool. Space is cooler. Your lot may be jerks, but you got skills; the likes of which would make any girl red with envy.
   Jean-Michel << Well, I don’t know if I’d call us all jerks, but- >>
Oh, believe me, once you’ve passed by the academy enough times and had so many spaceboys leer at you and whistle, or seen the pros on their off days get so rowdy in front of a ratlung outside the bars and in cruise trips, it is hard to shake off that kind of notoriety away.
Jean-Michel << ... >> << That is horrible. On behalf of the cosmonaut corps, I am deeply sorry for my colleagues. >>
Don’t be. Like I said – flying is cool, and space is cooler. You got the skills, and that is why I need you, Jean-Michel: You fly well. Exceptionally well, may I add. I’ve been pouring over this battle for the past couple hours – how many it’s been, I am uncertain – but, you are the one most capable of pulling it off.
Jean-Michel << Wait, hours? It can’t have been that long, has it? I need to- >>
Spacetime, Jean-Michel. It works differently. The battle lasts exactly twenty-four minutes and thirty-seven seconds in real time. From the time the first bullet rings out to the time the last vessel is struck down.
And it always ends with a graveyard that surrounds a planet cracked in half; another of His “miracles” that He escapes with a black hole He creates.
And I am not letting that happen.
I will need your help in this doomed battle, because the outcome will decide how many will live. On my planet, in your fleet, across the Kingdom whole. Your King, however, will not live to see any of these outcomes. You have a chance to save the Kingdom, Jean-Michel.
But for that, you will need to sacrifice yourself.
Are you willing to die for your King, cosmonaut?
   Jean-Michel << Yes ma’am. >>
Okay, don’t “Yes ma’am” me, spaceboy; this is actual life-and-death we are talking about! No intrigues, no fancy fights. No fancy funerals or honours. Drop your soldiering and ask yourself – do I want to die for a man I’ve never met, a man who’ll never remember my name?
Are you truly willing to die for your King, cosmonaut?
Jean-Michel << ... >> << ...Yes. >> << I am a royal cosmonaut from the Scythian Republics, in willing service of King Arcuturus and the Kingdom of Solaria. But above all, I serve Scythia, and her prosperity relies on the prosperity of the Kingdom itself. You said the King will die, but his Kingdom will carry on, correct? Then I am willing to die in his name. >> << Is that a good enough answer for you, Mallik? >>
Very. You are brave, Jean-Michel. I am sorry you have to die.
Jean-Michel << It’s not death, ma’am. We can mourn the dead later, whilst us wounded still fight. >>
You may not see it, but I am smiling at you right now. I hope I can find a way to save you.
Now, here’s my plan, Jean-Michel. Follow it, and we might have a chance. All I ask is that you place your trust in me.
Please.

Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Hey, hey, hey, let’s not get ahead of ourselves! >> << Things are looking pretty fucking dire, but it ain’t over yet! Remember Ferrener? Now that was a clusterfuck – and we made it! >> << So, you know, don’t fucking panic, okay? >> << Now – where to, Gauntle 3? >>
   Gauntle 3 << ... >> << I don’t know. >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I got a plan. >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << YOU got a plan? >>
   Gauntle 3 << What is it, Gauntle 7? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << On our pass earlier, when we skirted close to the planet-killer, any of you noticed these holes on the surface? >>
Gauntle 3 << I’ve noticed chunks of the structure blown off, but... >> << Tendrils reached from within to pick those chunks back; they put the starchild back together. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Yeah. I thought all the ordinance our fleet had been throwing at it after it blew up the transport ships would do some damage. I... >> << Seriously, how did this formation work a hundred years ago? Just spray and pray it’s dead before you’re out of ammo? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << You wouldn’t be far off the mark I’d hazard. >> << Either way, I’ve noticed the hull has holes. The starchild cannot patch itself up fully – it is taking too much damage. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << What are you implying, Wrench? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << We fly in, blow it up from the inside. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << And be back home for dinner? That’s insane, I’m checking your life support levels. >>
   Gauntle 3 << It might work. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Okay, I am checking yours too then! >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << What other option is out there? >> << Given how much everything is being decimated out here, this might be our only chance at saving the fleet. At saving the King even! >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Wait, King Arcuturus is present? >>
Gauntle 3 << You should really start paying attention to briefing, Gauntle 4. >> << Gauntle 7, how sure are you about getting us to one of the holes in the starchild’s structure? >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Pretty damn sure, Gauntle 3. >>
   Gauntle 3 << Gauntle 7, take point. I’ll follow your lead. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << You lot are insane. UGH! Fine! Wrench, I’m right behind you! >> << Not like I was planning to make it to Jensen’s barbeque next Sunday. Prolithe is destroyed anyway. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Use the debris as cover. We must not let the starchild see us. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << If this thing pops real damn eyes next, I’m straight up quitting the force. I want you both to know that. >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Alright then, I won’t tell you anything. >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << ...For real?! >>
Gauntle 3 << Easy does it, Gauntle 4. Focus on your flying. >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Yeah but- >> << Tendrils! 7 o’ clock high! >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Evade, evade, evade! >>
   Gauntle 3 << I can’t shake them! >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Renard! >> << UGH! SHIT! FUCK! >>
   Gauntle 3 << Gauntle 4, are you okay?! >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Uh, shit, Jean-Michel, perform one of your scans, please? >> << ... >> << Please, tell me good news? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Holy hell, how is your cockpit not cracked still? >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << This is not encouraging, buddy ol’ pal!!! >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I got a camera trailing you, it’s- >> << ... >> << It’s not good, Bernice. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Hey, quick question? What the FUCK does that mean? >>
Gauntle 3 << Your wreckage is picking up speed, Gauntle 4. You will be out of comms range soon. >> << ... >> << I am sorry, Bernice. >>
   Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Hey Renard? Fuck you, come save me! >> << Please! >> << ... >> << Please. >> << Please, I do not want to die. >> << Not here. Not like this. >> << At least shoot me dead! Come on!!! Can’t you spare a missile?! >> << Please don’t let me die! >> << Renard! Jean-Michel! >> << PLEASE! >> << ANSWER, YOU FUCKS! >> << I DON’T WANT TO DIE! I DON’T WANT TO DIE! I DON’T- >>

   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I am sorry... >> << ... >> << We got to carry on. >> << You okay, Renard? >>
   Gauntle 3 << No. But we’re pressing on regardless. Jean-Michel, I’ll keep following your lead. >> << Don’t get me killed. >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Wilco. >>
On your approach, remember – the Maker has many eyes, but he still remains blind.
A blind man feels. But when surrounded by water, a droplet does not register.
Fly into the tunnels. You will dance with your fate there.
Gauntle 3 << Uh... This is not looking safe, Jean-Michel. >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Trust me, Renard. >>
And be silent. You cannot let Him hear you.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << And be quiet! Don’t let Him hear you. >>
Gauntle 3 << Him? You mean the- >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << What did I just say, Renard?! >>
   Gauntle 3 << Apologies. Going dark. >>
His weakness is his size. An ego the size of a planet. A man toying with fates of countless beings, all of them at his fingertips.
You will strike beneath him, aiming straight for the gaps where he breathes.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << There! The pulsating veins! >>
   Gauntle 3 << Jean-Michel, this thing is alive. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Aim for His veins, Renard! Make Him bleed! >>

   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Reloading laser canons! >>
Gauntle 3 << I admire how you can keep your cool, Gauntle 7! >> << I’m heading for a second run! Cover me! >>
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Roger that, Renard! >> << Wrench, firing laser! >>
Mallik. What have you done?
Putting you back to sleep.
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Direct hit! It’s coming off! >>
It is not over. It is far from over. Even as these two mosquitoes make my body bleed, it will not be enough to destroy me. You will need a lot more to make my body flood, and even if it does, these attacks are not enough to stop what you began. And I think you know it. Maybe I am not the sole defiler here.
Maybe you’re not.
But I think you misunderstand intentions.
   Gauntle 3 << Jean-Michel, it’s shaking! >>
And you misjudge the ways your own body can betray you.
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Good, it’s working! We’re near! >>
Gauntle 3 << Keep firing! Keep fir- >>

As do you.
Fuck!
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Renard? >> << RENARD! >> << NO! >> << Ah shi- >>
[COMMUNICATIONS LOST.]
This isn’t over yet!
Of course it isn’t, Mallik. I will simply encircle you like before, like a snake awaiting for this tiny little rat to panic and keel over. The strike is certain, and I will keep ascending beyond these confines. You cannot put an end to destiny. I have to patch myself up. I will be back for you, Mallik. Once I find you.
Fuck you.
Jean-Michel.
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << M-Mallik? >>
I am sorry for the pain. How are you holding up?
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << My ship is sliced in half, and I have a rod that has pierced my guts. I... I should be dead. Why am I not- >>
I’m trying to keep you alive. And I am doing the same with your ship. Sadly, He woke up sooner than we expected. And we got no time to lose now.
Genuinely, I am sorry. I am sorry for making you suffer. I am no better than Him…
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Don’t w-worry about it, ma’am. I appreciate the concerns. But we still got a fight to finish. >> << All engines are busted – yet they work at full capacity. You are carrying me, correct? >>
You will need to hit both of these bones at once. The interconnecting rods. It’s the spine that holds Him in place. With it gone…
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << He will fall. >> << I will need some serious firepower. >>
You already have it.
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I know. >> << ... >> << Will Scythia survive, Mallik? Will He be stopped? >>
It will. I will stop Him.
And I want to thank you once again, Jean-Michel.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Don’t mention it. Just make sure your god dies and I won’t haunt you from the afterlife. >>
Heh. Sounds like a plan.
I will leave you to prepare.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Mallik. One last thing. >>
Yes?
   Gauntle 7 – Wrench << You’ve seen beyond. Into... What comes after. >> << ... >> << Is there anything you saw? >>
An endless galaxy of stars. And we dance right alongside them. We pick our favourites. Each one a memory, a thought, a feeling. And it is peaceful. Quiet. Serene.
You will be alright, Jean-Michel, I can promise you this much.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench Jean-Michel << Thank you for your answer, Mallik. Gauntle 7, signing out. >> << ... >> ** Breathe In ** ** Breathe Out ** ** Cough ** << Luc. You damn bastard. I’ll pester you in a bit. >> << ... >> << Approaching gun range. Switching all power to weapons. Bypassing overheat overrides. >> << ... >> << Never thought the cockpit could get so toasty. Heh. >> << I should have picked up smoking, like Luc did. Fool he was. Cool he did look however. Heh, dumb idiot... >> << ... >> << Mother, I think you would be proud of him. He may had been an enemy. But he fought with valour. >>
<< Mother. I did my best. See you soon. >>
[COMMUNICATIONS LOST.]
See you, spaceboy.

Nanowrimo WIP Intro
I have decided that I am going to be doing NaNoWrimo this year because dammit I want to write a novel and now is as good a time as any. I’m dusting off some of my oldest proper OCs and going back to my warrior cats fan girl roots with my fantasy cat story!
The current working title is Starfall, though this is liable to change. The story follows Flint, a young housecat who meets Midnight, a fallen star. Together the two go on a journey to return Midnight to her home in the sky, and maybe fall in love along the way 😳
I only really have this basic roadmap as well as a vague idea of some supporting cast members, otherwise I’m flying by the seat of my pants, which I think is good for me. I’m excited to discover things as I write and learn more about these characters and this world as I go along. I think just writing is honestly the best method for me here as I have a tendency to bog myself down if I go planning things out too much.
I’m going to try to keep things updated here as I write! We will see if this actually happens haha
Best of luck to anyone else doing nanowrimo ✨

Nanowrimo day 6: another WIP from 2 years ago. It was gonna be a Kiara x Sarah fic.
Tumblr media
“Shut up,” Sarah’s familiar honeyed tone reached Kiara’s ears before she saw her once best friend. “Kie?”
Kiara’s stool twisted toward the sound of Sarah’s voice and she couldn’t stop the smile that crossed her face as she looked at the other young woman. It had been a few years since John B and Sarah had broken things off and almost as long since Kiara had actually seen her. Sarah had left the OBX the same way Kiara eventually did, with little more than a goodbye and no attempt to follow up with friends. All anyone really knew was that she had gone to school out-of-state and moved away from North Carolina and her toxic family.
The time away had obviously done her a world of good. She looked better than she had when they were sixteen, the blonde in her hair a little lighter, soft waves of gold tumbling over her shoulders. Kiara was reminded of the crush she’d had on Sarah back in the day as the other girl hugged her, the familiar floral perfume hitting like a train.
“I can’t believe this, what’re you doing in LA?” Sarah asked, immediately occupying the empty stool beside Kiara. She waved her hand for the bartender’s attention and he gave it almost immediately, promising a quick return on the drink she rattled off.
“Just travelling…I was home for a few days recently, for Pope’s birthday.” Kiara replied. The memory of the heartache was fresh but she pushed it down.
“I was gonna go,” Sarah admitted, “Pope invited me out but John B and I still aren’t really…speaking, so I didn’t wanna make things awkward.”
“I would’ve loved to see you,” Kiara wasn’t ashamed to admit that she’d felt the emptiness of Sarah’s absence, especially when she was clinging to anything that might’ve made the entire day feel less difficult.
“Well, how long are you in town?”
“A couple weeks.”
“Good, plenty of time for us to catch up, staring now.” She replied.
-
Sarah belonged on a beach. That was Kiara’s assessment by the end of the two weeks that they spent almost exclusively together. She wasn’t sure if she was reliving some passed fantasy or if realizing JJ wasn’t her ‘splinter bean’, as Sarah always said, had pushed her in the direction of needing to move on and not wanting to. Was she so desperate for a piece of the old life that she was digging up her feelings for Sarah or had two weeks away with her old best friend just reignited a flame that was never fully extinguished?

Current idea for Nano project;
When they were young, Iloaina Vatosoa and Jove Torsten were brought together by their parents' strange yearly habit of gathering for reasons not explained to the children. When said ritual ends in tragedy one year, the two of them find themselves even more enmeshed as they struggle to answer why this happened and if they can be found.
Deciding to study strange happenings leads them to develop a study into the occult, and despite best efforts, the temptation to move on stretched further and further out of reach as they uncovered more. When they come to a crossroads, decisions have to be made whether they really, truly want the answers they seek or whether they want to be able to live the simple, peaceful lives they'd mourned when they first lost their parents.
The title I've settled on is Bloodbound

Thank you!
“It’s okay, Jer. Thank you, but no. I wasn’t in love with Dinah, but I did love her. I still love her. She’d been my best friend since I was three years old, since before you were born. Throughout everything in my life, Dinah had been there. She was more my family than you were, than Mom or Dad, or anyone else ever had been. So, when she was chosen and never came home, it broke me in a way that I can’t even explain. Like, imagine, Jer one day disappeared, and you had no idea where he was, if he was okay, or if you were ever going to see him again.”
“That’s different!” he protested.
“How?” she asked, and Cian stuttered as he blushed. “It’s not, Cian. You might react differently, because Jer is, but that ache is the same.”
Cian glanced at Jeremiah next to him, and then he said, “okay, I’m sorry. You’re right.”
“I wasn’t aware you knew what that word meant,” she teased.
“He doesn’t use it often,” Jeremiah added.
“Oh, fuck off.”
She stepped into the training grounds, glancing over her shoulder at the boys, as she offered as an invitation, “c’mon, then. Let’s see what those powers can do, yeah?”

nanowrimo announcement post
Hi there! My main is @catgirlwarrior and this blog may become collaborative. this will be a collection of daily writing entries for nanowrimo 2022, for a writing project about my latest creative idea, The House (name pending). Instead of a word count goal, I've chosen to set my goal to be writing something each day. I'm not sure where this is going yet, but I can't wait to find out. My first entry is under the cut!
(P.S. I'd love to have some writing buds to talk to about nano this year, so please feel free to DM me or send me an ask if you wanna be friends and talk about writing, or if you have any questions or ideas about The House! Ideally I'd love for this story to be interactive in some way.)
What is The House?
The House is a big collection of pocket dimensions, collected inside of one big pocket dimension and then connected to its owner. It's not quite sentient, but many aspects of The House are affected by the fact that it does have a soul. That soul is inexorably linked to the sole of the Homeowner, and it can even be affected by their moods or their physical/mental state. The House is both newly constructed and as old as time itself, and the magic that creaks through the floorboards and shivers along the walls is stronger than almost any other there is.
Once you move into The House and it decides it likes you, The House moves into you, too.

NaNoWriMo Day 2: Herald At Dawn
***I'm doing half a nano (25k not 50k) cause I have too much other shit to do (school)***
Today's Wordcount/Today's Goal Wordcount: 855/835
Total Wordcount: 1755/25k (7%)
Goal Wordcount: 25k
Snippet:
Alexandrina and Asa walked down the airship docks, Alex looking for someone specific. Instead, she found the dockmaster, and crossed over to his small stand. “Ms. McLelland. And here I thought I had seen the last of you,” he said, coolly. “Never, Mr. Thomas. Is Captain Sparks’ ship in?” “You know I cannot answer that, miss.” “And you know that there are more than a few people who would be very interested to hear of your involvement in the recent trial.” “Really? What involvement, do tell.” “Nothing much, truly. Bribery, lying under oath, that sort of thing.” The dockmaster’s scowl deepened. “Dock thirty-three.” “Thank you.” Alex smiled thinly, and began the long walk to the very end of the wooden pier that jutted out into the open air. As they walked away, Asa asked, “Do you have blackmail on every official in the city? He was about the fourth person I’ve seen you do that to.” “Oh, no, only about half of them.” “Ah,” said Asa, in a manner that implied he still thought that was an absurd amount of people to have blackmail material on.
Notes: It was a lot of typing up and editing stuff again today, but I did add some new things (blackmail discussions and Alex's fear of heights, specifically) so I'm pretty proud of what I did. I didn't write as much as I did yesterday, but I still went over the goal, and I'm glad about that, cause I have two marking period (1/4 of the school year) tests coming up in a couple weeks (14th (physics) & 15th (algebra 2) of november) and I want to have a couple hundred words worth of buffer in case I only get like 70 words on those days.
Taglist (ask to be +/-): @thelaughingstag @gr3y-heron @another-white-void
