Your Heart Beats Louder When It Rains
Hey everyone!!
Well, upon being recommended this show by a friend, I watched the pilot, and I AM DEFINITELY WATCHING MORE!
Shaun is so sweet and we were given so much insight into him... It’s incredible. And all the other characters provided their own relevance to the show, but I hope to understand them more.
And so... Here’s a fic. I’m planning to write one or two more just on the pilot alone...
SUMMARY:
Autism and savant syndrome both go hand in hand, making the smartest young doctor that the world had ever seen, so it seemed.
Or, a fic based on some of the the pilot of The Good Doctor, 'Burnt Food'.

EpiPen and Girlfriends
When you show up to the ER after an allergic reaction, Claire and Neil finally learn something interesting about Shaun.
Words Count: 1,016
Pairing: Shaun Murphy x F!Reader
Warning: None
Author's Note: This was requested by a very kind anon! It's my very first fic for this fandom so I hope it's not too bad. Also I used my own allergy for this fic just because—
Tumblr media
Holding a small tablet in his hand, followed closely by two of his three residents, Dr. Neil Melendez walked up to the bed you were quietly sitting on. From your cheeks to your hands, itchy red marks covered your skin, and you had to grip the bedsheets to keep yourself from scratching them manically.
“Good evening,” the oldest surgeon greeted you, briefly looking up from the tablet. “How are you feeling?”
You shrugged and smiled. “Not too bad, actually,” you replied honestly. “I just feel like ripping my skin off.”
Melendez nodded before handing your record over to the young lady – Dr. Browne, her blouse read. “Can you tell me what we have there, Dr. Browne?” he questioned. But she barely had time to look at the record when the last person spoke up.
“It is a case of anaphylactic shock caused by the ingestion of allergens,” Shaun declared, his hands locked tightly against his chest as always. You nodded even if the question hadn’t been from you and looked down at your hands in shame.
You had been eating dinner with a friend of yours. The both of you had picked a nice restaurant, not too expensive or fancy. Something just nice. And in your arrogant stupidity, you had ordered the one dish you shouldn’t have. You really thought that it wouldn’t be that bad. But here you were, sitting in the ER. And you were the only person to blame.
“Thank you very much, Dr. Browne, for your diagnosis,” Melendez said again, staring right at Shaun.
“My name is Shaun. Shaun Murphy.” Shaun corrected, nodding as if to prove his point. “Claire is standing on the other side of you,” he said, pointing at Claire to indicate her position.
Dr. Melendez shook his head and rolled his eyes, and you had to bite your bottom lip to swallow back a laugh. Looking up at Shaun, you noticed his eyes were fixated elsewhere, and you wondered if he had looked at you at all since their arrival.
“Can you tell us what happened and when?” Claire asked you in a kind tone, pulling you out of your thoughts.
“Of course,” you said, shifting on the bed to get seated in a better position. “I am allergic to seafood, but usually it isn’t so bad. So tonight, when I went to the restaurant, I ordered a dish that contained seafood. There was barely any of it! So I thought nothing would happen. And after a good fifteen minutes, my skin turned red, and I had trouble breathing.”
“I see. Do you still have trouble breathing?”
You shook your head. “Not anymore. I used–”
“The patient used an epinephrine auto-injector!” Shaun exclaimed, cutting you off. You smiled at him and nodded. “EpiPens help treat severe allergic reactions. Although it is still recommended to go to the hospital since another reaction can happen later on.”
Dr. Browne sighed quietly and hugged the tablet against her chest in frustration. You felt sympathetic for her. It seemed like the poor woman never had any occasion to talk.
“Well, Murphy, since you are so interested in the topic, me and Dr. Browne are going to let you do the patient check-ups before we can send her home,” Melendez told him. He patted Shaun on the shoulder but quickly retrieved his hand.
“No,” Shaun simply replied with a small smile, his eyes fixated in the distance. “I can’t do that.”
Claire’s eyebrows shot up at Shaun’s refusal, and the older doctor crossed his arms and leaned towards him a little like he hadn’t heard correctly.
“You can’t?” Melendez asked.
“No,” Shaun repeated. “A physician shouldn’t treat a family member, a friend, or their significant other.”
At that, Shaun finally looked at you and smiled proudly. You felt your heart swelling inside your chest and heat rising in your cheeks. The butterflies in your stomach were so strong that you almost missed Claire’s question.
“Are you a member of Dr. Murphy’s family?” she asked politely.
You shook your head and bit your lip. “Actually, Shaun and I are–”
“In a romantic relationship,” he interrupted you again. He had done it a lot tonight, and you would definitely tease him about it later.
Next to you, you heard Melendez almost choke, and you shot him a dark look, making him regain his composure immediately. Claire, on the other hand, was much quieter about the discovery, her mouth hanging slightly open.
The longer they remained quiet, the more you wanted to laugh. You had no idea why exactly, but it seemed to be the year’s biggest event to them. Eventually, you giggled, bringing their focus back on you.
Dr. Melendez cleared his throat before speaking again. “Claire, you’ll do the check-up. Murphy, you can follow me.”
Shaun shook his head and sat down on the chair next to the bed. “I have to stay there. To make sure everything is alright.”
“Shaun, I am alright,” you assured. “I’m certain Dr. Browne is very capable of doing a check-up.”
Claire smiled and nodded gratefully. But it wasn’t enough for Shaun. Of course, it was never enough unless he was the one doing the work.
“Claire is capable of doing a basic check-up, yes,” he agreed. “And you are alright for now. Something could happen. You could have another anaphylactic reaction. I need to be there if it happens.”
After a lot of arguing between you, Shaun, and Dr. Melendez, it was decided that Shaun would be allowed fifteen minutes to stay with you and would then be called back to work. You tried not to show it too much, but it reassured you to have him by your side.
After a few minutes, you felt his hand slowly sliding into yours, and you looked at him questioningly.
“I heard it is nice to hold the hand of someone scared,” he explained, looking again at something that wasn’t you while he talked.
You frowned and tilted your head. “I’m not scared?”
“I know,” Shaun replied, wiping the palm of his hand onto his pants. “I am.”

“Y/N, how would you like to join us? We’re going to the bar when our shift is over,” Neil asked you with dreamy eyes. His hand resting on your shoulder. Neil was always trying to bring you out of your shell and make you associate with your coworkers. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to gather with your workmates its you were shy around them. With your friends from your hometown they knew how odd you were and would never judge you or dislike you but all these doctors you knew were way more mature than you. They had their life figured out and you were worried they wouldn’t like the real you and who you really are.
You grabbed all your books that you were going to study that night for a patient of yours and carried your bag. “Thanks for the invite, but I think I’m going to call it a night.” You said with a small voice, thanking him with a kiss on the cheek.
“You sure?” Neil smirked.
You waved, “bye Neil.”
Neil shook his head at you declining his offer. All he wanted was to have a night out with you. He wanted to get to know you better.
As you stepped out of the hospital your phone buzzed with a call. You chuckled as you saw the caller ID display your friend and roommate's name.
“Yes, Janelle?”
“Girl, meet me at Walmart! They got the good stuff you like so much on sale.” She was sparking with such enthusiasm for something so mellow.
Giggling you put your friend on speaker as you started your car, “I think you’re the only person I know that gets excited for Walmart.”
“I thought since you’re always so busy-”
You rolled your e/c eyes, “here we go again! Always the same topic of conversation. I’m sorry I’m over here saving lives!”
“I’m just saying I barely see you anymore. I miss you. I want to know whats going on with your life. Any guys? Lets just hang out for a little bit, please.”
You felt bad, your friend sounded lonely and you could go for some best friend advice and love at this moment. “Sure, why not? I’m coming over! Order me something from McDonald’s okay? I’m starving.”
Janelle laughed loudly on the other end.
Tumblr media
The burger hit the spot of your hunger. You licked your lips and wiped your fingers.
“Do you think we need more of this?” Janelle pulled out the coffee creamer from the milk aisle.
“Yes,” you said with a definite answer. “You drank all of the other one?”
Janelle looked at you bashfully, “oops, that was me?”
“Oops, that was me?” You repeated sarcastically. “Of course that was you. I barely get to drink coffee creamers anymore. I now drink that dark stuff at work.”
“Right, work. So how’s that Melendez doctor?”
You almost choked right there. People were eyeing you as you playfully slapped your friend in embarrassment. “Janelle! What if he’s here?”
“Honey, he probably shops at Whole Foods not at some Walmart, okay. Besides why are you so secretive about him?”
You waved your hands in front of your face to try hide your bashful expression, “Because, he’s so handsome and more mature than me. He has his whole life figured out. I’m still living off of Ramen while he probably eats with Beyonce!”
“Oh, someone has a crush! And he’s rich!”
You put bread in the cart and almost knocked the cart into an old woman, “Just because he may be rich, Janelle, doesn’t mean that’s the most important thing. But yes, Neil Melendez may be rich.”
Your best friend and wing girl squealed louder than a pig. “Oh my God! You like him! You like him! You like him! Why don’t you just ask him out then? You are so pretty, he’d probably say yes.”
“That’s the problem. He may say yes. It’s not definite. I’m, I’m too afraid. It doesn’t matter. We are just coworkers he’s my boss and we have a professional relationship, nothing more.”
“Alright, I won’t push it anymore.” Janelle grew a big, evil, smile on her face. She skipped behind you and pushed you in the shopping cart.
You screamed loud and whipped your head around to her, “what are you doing Janelle?”
“You’re too stressed out Y/N. Let loose. It’s time we have fun.” Janelle didn’t even give you enough time to interject because she was already speeding down the shopping lanes. She pushed you faster and faster.
At first you were afraid but then the adrenaline got to you and you started laughing. She poured chip bags and bags of marshmallows on you to replicate rain. She twirled the cart and your cheery cackles were heard through out the whole store.
This is what you meant. You could be a silly willy with your best friend and people that knew you. But you were too shy and afraid to reveal your fun self to others but more to Neil. You were frightened he would say you were too stupid for him or that you were not serious enough. Neil meant so much to you that you were always shy around him. You liked him so much and you never wanted to jeopardize your relationship you have with him.
What you didn’t know was Neil did indeed shop at Walmart and he was doing some last minute shopping.
He was peering at a bag of pistachios when he could of sworn he heard your shrieks. He paid no attention to it at first until he heard your voice nearby. It couldn’t have been you! No, not shy, flustered, Y/N. Neil turned the corner and was met with the surprise of you dancing in the shopping cart. He was a bit confused. You were always shy around him when Neil would talk and hang out with you. It was a complete 180. Who was this person? He couldn’t help but smile. You looked so adorable and cute having fun. You were being a ball of excitement. So different than how he knew you or what he thought he knew. He loved how sweet you were when you were shy but you seemed more happy now. He loved the real you. Neil even found himself getting jealous. Why didn’t you show your true, inner self to him? Were you afraid of him? He wanted to know everything about you and he felt like he didn’t know you at all. His smile started to disappeared. Neil didn’t think. Before he knew it he was making his way towards you and your roommate.
“Hello Y/N,” Neil created a fake grin.
You were completely horrified. Your heart pounded vigorously. Was he watching you this whole time? He probably thought you were being absurd. At once all the nerves consumed you. You became speechless. You were so embarrassed! You quickly hopped out of the cart and sheepishly put your hands behind your back. “H-hey Doctor Melendez. I didn’t know you shop here?”
“It’s Walmart. I hope I can shop here.”
Your eyes bugged out of your head.
“What my friend means is that you look rich and so handsome that we suspected you might shop at places like Whole Foods and what not.” Janelle saved your butt.
Neil chuckled, “no, I need my junk food.” He then eyed you. “Saw you having fun here.”
You looked down, scared for his talk.
“Why don’t I ever see this side of you? I think you should let that fire out more at work in front of all of us. I think its cute.” He winked at you as he walked away.
“Oh my God Janelle,” you fell against the cart, leaning against it. “I think I just died. That was so embarrassing!”
Janelle danced around you, “are you serious? He said you were cute! Agh, I wish a guy would say that about me!”
“I’m so glad that’s over.”
Tumblr media
It wasn’t over. Far from it.
Neil couldn’t sleep that night. He was angry and jealous. He wanted to start a relationship with you but he didn’t even know who you were. How was it going to work? He didn’t understand why you kept who you were away from him? Do you hate him that much?
Neil paged you and texted you that he needed to discuss something with you, asap the next day at work.
Your bones shook like a tree. You were more than nervous, you were petrified. Was this about the fiasco at Walmart or was this something more? Neil meant so much to you, you didn’t want to ruin what you two already had.
You knocked on the door to a vacant room. You saw Neil sitting at the table through the glass windows.
“Come in,” he said loud for you to hear.
You walked in slowly.
“Please sit.”
You sat, biting your lip. You played with your fingers awaiting the blow.
“I just want to say I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me but I wanted to discuss something that’s been bothering me.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I knew you. I don’t know why but when I saw you having fun yesterday my heart hurt. It’s weird to explain.” Neil rubbed his temples, clearly this was effecting him. “I fell asleep that night thinking about you.”
“About me?” You felt flustered.
Neil heard how that sounded and quickly tried to save himself from the grave he dug himself, “please, let me rephrase that. What I mean is, I know you for being this quiet, shy woman and who I saw yesterday was this outspoken, fun, burst of fire. Why is there such a change?”
You were afraid he was going to bring it up. You felt hot. You weren’t really sure how you were going to respond. “I don’t know.” You became shy.
“I just don’t understand why you are so...afraid of me? Have I done something to scare you?”
“It’s not you okay,” you were becoming overwhelmed. Why did he have to bring up something you were insecure about? Why couldn’t he just let it go? “It’s me. I just I don’t-”
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. I just want a complete honest answer. I don’t want you to dislike me. Please tell me what happened.”
You wanted to shut out everything. You were self conscious of your personality. You felt like crying. You stared at your hands and wanted to be sucked in a hole. Your lips trembled as a tear fell.
Neil saw that and felt like a monster. “I’m sorry Y/N. I didn’t mean to-”
You wiped your tears away and stood up, “You said enough. It’s over, it’s done, just leave it be.” You were about to leave but entered the room again. “I’m insecure about myself and I don’t like the real me. I’m afraid you won’t like who I am because I really like you Neil. I hide because who I really am is this crazy, reckless person. I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. I’m sorry I’m weird.” You walked away leaving Neil feeling defeated and hating himself because all he wanted to do was tell you how he truly felt.
Tumblr media
It was the next day and you were swallowed up in your blanket, eating ice cream and watching rom cons that were too good to be true. You felt hollow. You thought you maybe had a chance with Neil but he hated you and found you unattractive.
Janelle came in with a guilty look on her face, “it’s okay babes.” She hugged you tight. “If he doesn’t love you then he doesn’t deserve you because you are a gorgeous thing.” She smiled trying to make you laugh.
You chuckled weakly and cried into Janelle’s shoulder feeling like a glob rather than a person. “I even told him how I felt.”
There was a knock at the door. “I’ll get it.” You slipped on your slippers and walked around the apartment gloomy. You opened the door and standing there was Neil holding a bouquet of roses. “Oh its you.” You threw the door in his face.
“Please Y/N I really need to talk to you.”
Janelle turned you around like a mother, “go talk to him. Now.”
You groaned as you met with Neil’s body. “What do you want?”
“I wanted to apologize for the way I acted towards you yesterday. It was wrong and I am very sorry. I was being stupid. I was jealous because I wanted you to be yourself around me. I wanted to know how adorable you act and I want to push you in a cart. I want to have those fun moments with you because you are special Y/N. You have this beautiful, amazing personality that lights up the room and that makes me feel giddy. I’m a complete idiot for treating you like how I did but Y/N I like you. I like you a lot. I would love to take you on a date like a gentleman because you deserve the best. These are for you.” He handed you the roses.
You were speechless, mouth agape as you stared at this man completely smitten with you and confessing. You smelled the roses and smiled, “they smell amazing. Thank you.”
“Phew, I’m glad you liked them because I was really nervous you were allergic or something-”
You pulled Neil’s collar and gave him a big kiss. It was sensual and perfect. It wasn’t too quick but not too long. Both lips moved in perfect sync. “You should’ve said that yesterday.”
“I really should of if I was going to get that outcome.”
Janelle started clapping in the background like a victorious warrior. “Amazing! So when’s the wedding?”

Neil Melendez One Shots (One Shot #3: Paint)
Prompt: “The paint’s supposed to go where?” and “It could be worse.”
Summary: You and your boyfriend Neil are painting the walls of a room in a new house that you moved into, but it turns out Neil sucks at painting.
Warnings: Fluff, kissing
Neil walked into your new house with four heavy buckets of (favourite colour) paint cans, stumbling slightly at the weight. As soon as you saw him, you couldn’t help but laugh, which he chastised you teasingly for.
You grabbed two of the paint cans and helped him into your room you wanted to paint and put them down in the corner next to the plastic you were going to cover the carpets with.
“Never got a ‘hello’ kiss,” Neil said into your ear, making you jump slightly. You giggled and placed a kiss on his cheek, making him pout. He tapped his lips and you rolled your eyes before giving him a proper kiss. He held your head so you couldn’t move and you had to push him away to break the kiss.
You shook your head at him and held out two paint rollers. He grabbed one and popped open the lid of one of the paint cans before dipping his roller into the paint.
“Neil, no! We haven’t laid out the plastic, dumbass.”
”Don’t call me dumbass if you want my help,” he joked while helping you lay it out.
”Okay, are we ready?” He asked, holding his paint roller out like a weapon. A smile forced itself onto you face and you nodded before both of you ran to the wall and started painting furiously. You had placed a bet; whoever could paint their side the fastest owes the other a bottle of alcohol if their choosing. You didn’t want to lose, Neil had very expensive taste.
Suddenly, you felt a cold splatter on your arm and cheek. You looked at Neil, who had paint on his hands and a mischievous smirk on his face.
“Neil! The bet was to paint the walls!”
”The paint’s supposed to go where?” He asked jokingly as he ran towards you and wiped the paint from his hands onto your clothes. You gasped at him before using your roller to layer paint onto his shirt.
It inevitably ended up becoming a fight, with you two caked in the coloured paint with big smiles on your laughing faces. Somewhere along the way, you had taken a couple minutes to paint one wall, even if Neil’s side was rough and a little too thinly layered.
“It could be worse,” you laughed when you checked out his side. He shook his head and moved towards you, holding onto your waist from behind. He buried his face into your neck and you gave him a kiss on his temple, which was covered in paint. You turned around to face him and you held onto his strong shoulders as he brushed his lips against yours. The kiss slowly got more heated as Neil started roaming your body with his hands, and you felt intoxicated. He tugged your hair and kissed your neck seductively, leaving a hickey here and there. You let out a small moan and he kissed a trail up to your ear, where he spoke. “I win,” he said, and before you could react, he pushed you against the wall with the wet paint. You squealed at the freezing feeling and he ran out the door, not wanting you to hit him. You chased after him downstairs to the kitchen, but you didn’t see him there. “Neil, come out... I won’t hurt you if you own up to your mistakes,” you said out loud. You heard a creak of the floorboard behind you before Neil picked you up and threw you over his shoulder before running back up the stairs effortlessly. You kicked and laughed but he didn’t put you down until you made it back to the bedroom you were supposed to be painting. Neil caught his breath and gave you a look that said, ‘I’m helplessly in love with you’, and he seemed to realize that you could read him well. He smirked and moved closer to you, pressing a sweet kiss onto your forehead. --

Part 3 of Neil Melendez One Shots!
(Continuation of One Shot #1: Nightmares)
--
After the second ring, you were about to hang up until Neil’s sleepy, rough voice came out from the other end of the phone. “Hello?” He rasped out before there were a couple clanks, probably him drinking water to soothe his voice. ”(Y/N), are you there?” He tried again, this time sounding more awake... and worried. Were you just imagining that? There’s no way. Or maybe he was worried, but he was worried about you as a friend. Whatever it was, it made you feel warm. “H-hey. I’m sorry to wake you up,” you apologized, flinching while you waited for him to yell at you like everyone else in your life would have. You slumped back in relief when you heard nothing but gentle concern in his voice. “No, it’s okay. I wasn’t having the best dream anyway. Something wrong?” You tried to compose yourself enough to properly tell him, but you couldn’t stop the tears from rushing out of your eyes as you relived the nightmare you had moments before. Your words turned into strangled whimpers and you could do nothing but cry some more. You barely even heard his voice as he tried to make sense of what was happening, it was all a blur. After a couple minutes that dragged on and felt like hours, you started to breathe in more normally. The walls didn’t feel like they were closing in on you anymore, and you could hear Neil’s voice. “Breathe, (Y/N). 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out,” he told you, giving you little words of encouragement when he heard you listening to him. You finally were back to normal and he spoke up. “Are you alright?” “Yes I just had a-a nightmare.” “Again? Same one?” You nodded before realizing he couldn’t see you. You confirmed what he asked with a simple ‘yes’ and you heard him sigh into the phone. Were you stressing him out? Of course you were, why wouldn’t you be? He doesn’t have time to be a full time surgeon and take care of you like you couldn’t do it yourself. “I’m sorry, calling you was a mistake. I’ll let you go back to sleep.” ”No,” he grunted, noises of him shifting around coming through, “do...you need me to be there?” You were initially confused at his question. Be there? He’s already being there for you. “Sorry?” ”Do you want me to come over.” He stated more than asked. You debated that in your head. Yes, you wanted nothing more than for him to be next to you, but on the other hand, it was inappropriate and it would probably be awkward. “(Y/N)? Still there?” ”Oh, sorry, yes.” “Yes, as in yes you want me there?” ”...Yeah, I want you to be here,” you held your breath. What did you just do? You crossed a line! The one fine line between colleagues and friends. “I’ll be there in 10,” with a final goodbye, he hung up the phone and left you alone again. You placed your phone on the table next to you and sat up with your hands in your lap for a minute before you decided to freshen up a little more. Right as you finished brushing your teeth and combing your hair, there were three sharp knocks on the door across the hallway. You took your time getting there, still processing what you were doing. When you opened the door, you were met with a side of Neil you never thought you’d see. But you’d be lying if you said you weren’t glad you got a chance to see it. He was dressed in a black shirt that was sticking to his toned figure because of the rain, and some grey sweatpants with his sneakers to finish off the look. Your eyes met his and he gave you a gentle smile, which seemed even more cute with his wet hair. You sidestepped to let him in and he entered your house, slipping off his shoes while you walked to your bathroom to grab him a clean towel. When you exited your bathroom, you saw him sitting on the edge of your bed, his head tilted down to stare at his hands. His eyes flicked up at the sound of you approaching him and he gratefully accepted the towel you held out. He ruffled his hair, leaving it adorably messed up.

What did you just say to me?!” You lifted your head at the loud voice, laying the clipboard you had previously stared at to the side to find out what was going on.
“I called you an asshole, because that’s what you are!” It was Jared. Oh no.
You rounded a corner to find him in the middle of the ER, a middle aged man standing closely in front of him. They were staring at each other with such intense resentment that you knew it was only a matter of seconds until the situation would escalate.
“Hey!”, you called to get their attention as you hurried over to them, but they didn’t seem to be aware of you. Other patients were starring now, watching the situation unfold with curiosity and fear. You gestured towards a nurse, signalling her to get security, just in case. You didn’t think Jared would let himself get involved in a fight while he was on shift, but you didn’t want to take a risk either.
You had nearly reached them as you saw the man whispering something towards your co-worker, too quiet for you to hear. Whatever he had said, it had been enough for Jared to lose his temper. “Jared no!”, you yelled, grabbing onto his coat just as the tall man lunged forward.
He landed a good punch at the man in front of him, who immediately reacted. Chaos erupted around you, distracting you for a moment. A second later something hit you in the face, sending you tumbling backwards.
Pain shot through your nose and eye as you brought a hand up to your face, covering it out of an instinct, as if it would help to soothe the pain. You realized it must have been Jared’s elbow hitting you, as he had pulled back for another punch. He didn’t seem to have realized it, too caught up in the fight.
Security arrived along with other doctors who had realized what was going on. You could make out Dr. Andrews and Dr. Melendez upon them, helping to break off the fight by tearing the two men away from each other.
Everything had happened so fast, it could have only been a matter of seconds and your brain was trying to keep up with it.
You watched as security brought the man outside, who was struggling against their grip and yelling insults. Jared was breathing heavily, his face still twisted in anger as Dr. Andrews tried to talk him down.
You were still in shock, your heart pounding rapidly in your chest as you stood by and watched them helplessly. Your vision had gone slightly blurry, so you could only make out a silhouette as you saw someone walking up to you.
When he came closer you realized it was Dr. Melendez. Relief washed over you. His calm demeanour and rational thinking always helped to ground you.
“What happened?” His voice was firm and stern. Just like he sounded when he talked to his patients, if it wouldn’t have been for the edge of worry you could make out. “Got hit by Jared’s elbow”, you muttered, hoping he wouldn’t give you a lecture, telling you that you shouldn’t have gotten involved.
But he seemed to sense it wasn’t the right time, because he let out a sigh instead, the frown on his forehead deepening. “Come one, I’ll have a look on it”, he stated, placing his hand gently on your lower back to guide you to a room.
You knew the gesture meant nothing to him, but the touch still send a shiver of warmth through your body. “I’m fine”, you argued, knowing how busy he was and not wanting to occupy his time. You couldn’t see his expression, but you were sure he was rolling his eyes at you. “You aren’t. Now come on.”
Now you were the one to sigh but you let him walk you to an examination room. You sat down while Neil closed the door, locking out the noise of the busy ER. The silence that followed was soothing yet terrifying. You had been alone with Neil before, but never in a room with closed doors. You shuddered at how intimate it felt.
Neil turned back towards you, getting himself a roller stool so he was sitting right in front of you. You had never been so close before, his eyes starring directly at your face. Carefully he reached out, touching your hand and you realized you were still covering your face with it.
“Sorry”, you mumbled, letting it fall into your lap and you saw his lips curve into a small smile before his eyes filled with concern. You stayed silent as he inspected your face, not daring to move as his delicate fingers travelled over your skin.
Suddenly you felt empathy for every patient of his. How could they bear his eyes on them, the closeness, his touch? He was professional, but it was impossible not to notice his good looks. Did they feel just as flustered when he looked at them like this? The intensity behind his gaze nearly felt unbearable, making you feel completely exposed.
You tried not to stare at him while his eyes were fixed on your face, but you couldn’t look away. You had never been so close to him, and you doubted you would ever get the chance again, so you felt the urge to memorize every detail of his face.
The way his eyes narrowed as he concentrated on the task before him, the deep frown between his brows, the way his lips curved as he pretended not to notice your staring. You adverted your eyes to your hands, feeling caught. You could feel your cheeks heat up and hoped he didn’t feel it too.
“Am I gonna die?”, you joked as the tension grew unbearable. Neil leaned back, his eyes twinkling. “You’ll live.” You let out a long breath, pretending to be relieved over the news while covering up the way the moment had affected you.
“It will leave a nasty bruise though. You should put ice on it.” You nodded, even though both of you were aware that the information wasn’t new to you, considering you were a resident.
“Does your head hurt?”, Neil asked as he observed you now with distance between the two of you. He was serious again and you could see that he wasn’t pleased. It would only be a matter of time until a lecture would follow. You groaned on the inside as you thought of it.
You were tempted to brush it off, but the way Neil raised his brows at you told you he would not buy a lie. “I’m not getting a head CT if that’s what you’re asking”, you settled on instead. You knew Neil was worried about you and you didn’t want to give him another reason to be.
The idea that he was worried send a wave of excitement through you, but you tried to ignore it. He was your boss. Of course, he was worried, if something happened to one of his residents. He would probably act just the same if it was Claire sitting in front of him.
A lump formed in your throat, and you gulped it back down. You were being ridiculous. Neil was just being professional and taking his behaviour any other way wasn’t fair to you or him.
“I am not going to order you to get a head CT for a bad hit. I am not Shaun”, Neil stated, standing up now. You followed him, wobbling a bit on your feet.
“But I am ordering you to take the day off-” “What?! No!” Neil raised his brow at you again. “That was a nasty hit you took there. It will definitely leave a black eye and the headache will only get worse.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, clearly unhappy with his order but knowing he was right. You couldn’t treat patients while walking around holding an ice pack to your face and you couldn’t fully concentrate when your head felt like it was about to burst.
“You’re going home.” His voice suggested there was no room for discussion. Not that you would have tried. He was your boss after all, and you had to obey to his orders. But being reminded of it after the vulnerable moment you had just shared felt like a punch to the stomach.
"Get some rest”, he added more gently as he saw your disappointed face.
“Fine.” You smoothed down your scrubs and walked past him. But before you could open the door, an uprising thought held you back.
You turned back to Neil, his eyes locking with yours immediately. “What will happen to Jared?” You could see his face harden and your stomach sank. “He didn’t mean to do that. He didn’t even realize it”, you tried to defend him. You didn’t even want to imagine the consequences he would have to face.
Neil sighed, clearly unhappy with your reasoning. “It’s not my call to make.  He attacked a patient. The directorate will decide about it.” You nodded, the impact of what had happened beginning to dawn on you. Jared could get fired. He had physically assaulted a patient in the middle of the ER. It would be a miracle if he would be allowed to keep his job.
“The guy said something to him though. You know Jared. He wouldn’t have attacked someone just like that.” Neil looked at you thoughtfully. “Did you catch what he said?” You sighed in defeat. “No.”
“Then there’s nothing you can do for him now.” It was the truth, but a part of you still refused to leave. “Can you tell him I forgive him?” You knew you were walking on dangerous territory right now but leaving like this seemed wrong. It wasn’t Neil’s duty to deliver Jared a message from you, but you really wanted him to know.
A part of you hoped that Neil didn’t seem himself just as your boss and wouldn’t mind the favor. In the time you worked here you had gotten to know him a little. You had been there when he had gone through the breakup with Jessica. Neil was private, always focused on keeping up a professional attitude, but sometimes in the late hours of the night you two would talk.
You would be bent over books together, trying to find a solution for a problem you were facing. It was nearly peaceful, the silence that filled the air while you were reading through medical books. You were both too deep into your work to acknowledge the other, but you knew you weren’t alone and that meant more than you could put into words.
Then even the most unattainable obstacle didn’t feel impossible to solve, didn’t make you feel hopeless and lonely.
And sometimes Neil would break the silence after a while. When he realized he needed a break, his thoughts wandering back to his own life, he would look up at you, all absorbed in your reading. In moments like this he would allow himself to look at you, really look at you.
In the quiet of the night, the distance he always had to keep towards you suddenly seemed forgotten. Meaningless. It was just you and him, a few books and too many thoughts and feelings bottled up inside of him.
He was tired and exhausted, frustrated by the problem and his incapability to focus. Before you could find him starring at you, he would break the silence, tell you something that kept him from fully committing to the task at hand.
Once that had been imagining a life without being a father. Then it had been about letting someone you loved go. In the beginning it had been purely for that reason, helping him get it off his chest so he could concentrate better. It had been purely selfish, a way to make him feel better.
You had always been a good listener. He had noticed that about you from the very beginning. The way you listened to your patients, how you found time to get to know them better and talk to them. It seemed to come easy to you, because it wasn’t something you had to learn. It came naturally to you, because it was who you were. You cared.
While it certainly raised red flags in his head from time to time that you cared so much for your patients, he had learned to use your gift for your patients best interest. If they were too stubborn or too scared to agree to a required treatment, he could count on you to convince them otherwise.
He was arrogant and he was selfish. It had only been a matter of time until he had seeked your advice just the same as they did. But had it only been for his own benefit in the beginning, he hadn’t expected to begin to care too. He couldn’t remember when something had shifted, when he had started to talk to you because he really wanted to know your opinion, your thoughts, your advice.
Now he wanted to talk to you, because he wanted you to know. And worst of all, he wanted to know you, get to know you, learn everything there was to know about your life and who you were.
You had offered him glimpses so far. It felt ridiculous how desperate he was for them.
But in the light of the day, it was easier to bury his feelings. It was easy being your boss, keeping up a professional demeanour. What made it hard was the moments he overheard you talking to the others. Another glimpse of who you were and what your life was like, yet he had to force himself to walk away.
You could see your question had surprised him in the way his brows shot up and he tilted his head to the side to gaze at you in wonder. “Are you serious? You’re going to forgive him, just like that?”, he asked incredulously.
You nodded, drawing your brows together at his reaction. You had expected him to say something, but about the fact that he was your superior and not your decision to forgive Jared.
“He hurt you”, Neil emphasized, his tone a little louder now. “He didn’t mean to. His day is bad enough already. Right now, he probably fears losing his job. I don’t want to add to his list of things to worry about.”
Neil stayed silent, his frustration with you visible in the way his jaw was clenched, and the tension lingered in his shoulders. “I guess we’re gonna have the talk right now”, he heaved, and you flinched. “The talk?”
Your heart sped up as you imagined what he could mean. Had you done something wrong? Made a mistake? Were you being unprofessional? Did he know about your feelings for him? Were you that obvious?
Whatever it was he wanted to talk about, it seemed to have been on his mind for a while now. And it wasn’t anything good judging by his stern tone and the wrinkle on his forehead.
You walked back into the room, sitting down in case your legs would decide to give up. Holding onto the fabric of the treatment bed grounded you as you waited anxiously for him to speak.
“You care.” You drew your brows together, not getting what he was trying to say. “So?” Neil let out a breath. “You care too much. In this job you can’t let yourself feel for every patient. It will break you.”
You were caught off guard by his words. You hadn’t tried to hide the empathy you felt for your patients, but it never had gotten in the way of your job. Neil had known it all along, so why address it now? Had the other doctors said something to him? Did they think you weren’t made for this job, because you were too involved?
“Isn’t that my decision to make?”
Your head was spinning with thoughts, and you gulped, feeling a little defensive. Caring wasn’t a bad thing. You couldn’t imagine doing your job without feeling for your patients. Or worse, using it to manipulate people, like other doctors did. You didn’t want to become such a doctor, such a person.
When you thought about it, you doubted you were even capable of it. It was a part of who you were, and you had always thought of it as a good thing. Now that Neil was looking at you with a frown, you suddenly felt insecure about it.
He clasped his hands together. “I am your supervisor. It’s my job to tell you, to make sure you won’t get hurt, because you will in the end, if you continue like this.” You were taken aback again, the dread in your stomach growing.
You admired Neil for his demeanour. He effortlessly switched between being distant and authoritative to compassionate and empathetic all while staying professional. You knew he cared for his patients much more than he let on.
Apart from that they took advantage of your empathy. If it came to convincing a patient to agree to a procedure or talk to them, all eyes would fall on you. Neil had counted on your skills to change a patients mind multiple times. What was different now?
But you knew you couldn’t ask him all of this. “I don’t get what that has to do with this”, you settled on, not wanting to argue with your boss right now. His eyes narrowed for a moment, and you knew you had struck a nerve.
Neil was always composed. Always calm and collected. Of course, you had seen him upset before, angry or frustrated, but he had never lost his temper. Now you could see the heat in his eyes and a part of you wondered if he would let it out.
But the tension didn’t leave his body. Instead, he clenched his jaw, raising his voice as he spoke.
“Jared hurt you, but you say it’s fine. You’re always there for everyone, listening and giving them advice. But what about you? When do you think about yourself? You can’t always put everyone else first.”
You flinched at his loud and harsh voice, but just as much over his words. Why would he get so riffled up over this, so upset over something that didn’t have anything to do with him or the job for that matter?
“I can’t help it”, you whispered truthfully. Neil’s gaze softened immediately, and he released his hands, which had been balled into fists. He took a step closer to you and you watched with big eyes, not sure what to expect from him.
He had surprised you many times today already.
“You should have someone who looks out for you. Someone who puts you first.” His voice was gentle when he spoke, so low that you weren’t sure you could trust your own ears.
His brown eyes were filled with a warmth you had only seen a few times before, once when he had saved a mother’s life and her children had hugged him. But never would you have expected it to be directed at you. Your heart melted and you blinked, hoping he couldn’t see how much his words had touched you.
But it wasn’t just that he was looking out for you, thinking about your wellbeing. In his words, the way he had said them, was an underlying meaning. If you hadn’t known better, you would have assumed he was talking about himself, offering to be that person for you.
But that couldn’t be it. He was far out of your reach. You only heard what you wanted to hear.
Neil cleared his throat, straightening up and the emotion cleared from his face. “You should really get some ice for your eye”, he lightened up the atmosphere. It took you a moment to adjust to the quick change of topics, but you nodded, putting on a polite smile as you hoped down the bed.
“Thanks, for taking care of me- I mean my eye, gosh.” Your face heated up and you saw Neil grin in amusement. “Anytime.”
And you knew he meant it.
Maybe you hadn’t been wrong, and he really wanted to be that person for you. Whatever it was, you were determined to find out. His words had showed you that he was much more attentive than you had expected, thought about you more than you had dared to hope.
Maybe it was time to do just what he had said, put yourself first and find out if there was a chance for the two of you.

Melendez x reader - Good reason
Tumblr media
can you do a melendez x reader where the reader is worried that neil is still hung up on Lim bc he stays after hours to talk to her but it’s actually that neil was going to her for advice on how to propose to the reader? (and then he proposes) so like a lil angst from the reader at the start but like 87.5% fluff lol - Anon❤️
Pulling you jacket over your shoulders, you sighed in content and yawned, grabbing you bag as you padded out the changing rooms.
“Heading out with Melendez (Y/N)?” Claire asked, walking into the changing rooms.
“Yeah...” you muttered, then changed your mind, “no, I’m not. I’m going home..”
Claire furrowed her brows and walked back out, standing in front of you with her arms crossed.
“What’s wrong? You and Melendez usually go to home together after a long shift.”
Sighing, you slumped your shoulders in defeat and shrugged a little.
“Just... can you come over...?” You asked softly.
“Of course, let me get changed and I’ll come with you.”
You smiled weakly and offered her a small thanks, leaning against the wall while you waited for her to return.
You heard talking from down the hall, so you quickly pulled out your phone, plugged in your earphones and pretended to listen to music. Your eyes flicking to Neil and Lim as they walked down the hall, smiling as chatting away.
It made your heart clench, he’d been spending more and more time with her.
You liked Lim, you really did, she was amazing, but you knew about their past, and you worried as he started to spend more time with her.
You glanced towards the floor, only to see a pair of shoes come in your vision.
Neil pulled an earphone out, and lifted your chin with his finger.
“Hey, are you alright?” He asked worried.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” You lied.
Neil seemed to believe you and kissed your forehead.
“What do you say we head to mine and watch some films and get a take out?” He smiled.
You swallowed nervously, hearing the changing room doors open, you sighed in relief, eyes darting to him, missing how Neil’s smile fell at the sound of your sigh.
You turned back to him with a weak smile and gestures to Claire.
“We’ve got plans, maybe another time.”
“Oh...” Neil muttered, “alright, I’ll see you tomorrow then. I love you.”
“Yeah... love you too Neil.”
Kissing his cheek, you quickly turned to leave with Claire when the door opened again and Lim stepped out with a smile.
“Who’s coming for drinks?”
“We’ve got plans, sorry Lim.” Claire smiled.
“That’s alright, Melendez?”
You glanced at Melendez to see him flicking his gaze between you and Lim, then he nodded and your heart shattered.
“Sure.”
Claire grabbed your arm, neither of you saying a word until you were sure were out of ear range.
“Okay, something’s definitely wrong here. I thought you were happy?”
“I am! It’s just... I’ll explain at mine...”
On the ride back, you tried to ignore the nagging feeling in your chest, you tried to push it away but you couldn’t, and as you got into your apartment you flopped on the couch face down and yelled into the pillows.
“Alright, talk to me, what’s really going on between you and Melendez?”
You sat up, letting Claire sit down and you felt tears burning your eyes. You explained everything, how he started to stay with Lim, how he spent more evenings with her and even days off meeting up with her, he wouldn’t ever let you come along if you asked to join them. You told Claire how he’d return late at night, how he’d started hiding his phone from you if he got a text, how sometimes you went to his place you’d find things belonging to Lim there.
By the time you finished, you were bawling your eyes out, Claire was holding you in her arms trying to shush you.
“Aw (Y/N), I’m sure it’s not like that... he.. he must have a good reason...” he spoke softly.
“What if he’s still hung up on her...” you sniffled.
“Oh (Y/N) no.” Claire cooed, “ I don’t believe that for one second. We just need to talk to him, to ask him. How about you and I ask him tomorrow?”
You sniffled and wiped your tears away, Claire was right you had to ask him. So you nodded slowly, and sniffled again.
“Good, now I think we both deserve a drink, what do you say? Wine and Chinese?”
You smiled a little and nodded again, standing up with Claire as you went to get the wine and she got the menu.
Claire didn’t go home, she stayed with you, both of you eating, talking, laughing and watching crappy Tv.
In the morning as you tossed her a spare pair of clothes for work, you smiled softly at her.
“Thanks for last night...” you sighed, “well speak to him as soon as we get in. He started at 6:00 we’re in at 12:00.”
“Hey, I’m sure it’s all just a huge misunderstanding.” Claire assured.
You both got ready for work, and you drove Claire with you car, deciding she could come get hers tonight instead.
As you entered the hospital, you felt nervous. As you changed into your scrubs, your heart beat wildly at the sighed of Lim walking around the halls with Neil.
“It’s okay...” Claire assured.
“I don’t know...” you mumbled.
You sighed softly and shuffled on your feet nervously, only to jump when Lim called your name.
Claire gave you a reassuring pat on the back, and nudged you forward slightly.
Walking over, you avoided Lim’s eyes and trained your gaze on the floor.
“Good night?” She asked.
“I guess...” you muttered.
Lim frowned, placing her hand on your shoulder.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing...” you muttered.
Lim laughed softly and shook her head.
“Look, I know you think there’s still something between me and Neil, but I can promise you there isn’t.”
“Lim I... I know you guys aren’t like that it’s just...” you didn’t know how to finish.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time together and he seems like he’s hiding something?” She asked.
You timidly nodded and she turned you around, pointing to Neil who was knelt behind you on one knee, a box in his hand and a huge, soft smile on his face.
You’re eyes shot open, you hands flew to your mouth and tears clouded your eyes.
“I love you (Y/N), and I know I’ve been acting strange as distant but I promise you it was for a good reason, I love you, I want carry on loving you.”
Neil chuckled softly, his eyes begging you to say yes, he was beyond nervous.
“Marry me?” Neil asked.
“Neil I... I’m... yes...” you chucked out.
Neil shot up and you crushed him into a hug, crying into his shoulder mutter out apologies.
“I know...” he whispered, “I know...”
Neil pulled away, he slipped the ring onto your finger before cupping your face and kissing you passionately, all around you people clapped and cheered.
When you both pulled away, you threw you arms around his neck and hugged him once more.
“I love you Neil.” You sighed

Not Giving Up
Summary: With Neil going into septic shock, Claire is desperate to try anything that might save him. Now she just has to convince Dr. Lim to do the same, and see if her gamble will pay off. Starts after the conversation about religion.
A/N: I have very little medical knowledge, so I'm skipping right over the surgical bit. This is just a short, quickly written little one shot because I just finished s3 last night, and I just cannot deal with that. I'm sure there will be more Melendaire to come though, because I desperately need them.
Idk if y’all are interested in this but figured I’d tag yall @shaunthegooddoctor @neilrnelendez . If y’all (or anyone else) want to be tagged in any future TGD fics (in which Neil will never die before he’s 80) let me know :)
WC: 1651 | Read on: AO3, FFnet
o . o . o
“Claire, he’s got severe sepsis,” Audrey commented, her expression beyond sad. “Even if he did recover, he’d be immunocompromised. He’d never be allowed back in an OR.”
“‘He’d be alive ,” Claire protested, desperation creeping into her voice. “Dr. Lim, are you really going to deny him a life-saving procedure just because his quality of life might decrease?”
Audrey hesitated, trying to figure out what she would do if this were any other patient. What if it was a stranger? It  was too hard to imagine. What if it were Andrews? Or someone who wasn’t so deeply entrenched in her heart? But it was no good, she just couldn’t untangle her feelings for Neil.
“Please, Dr. Lim, just let me take it to Melendez and see if he wants it,” Claire pleaded. “If I talk to him…”
“No,” Audrey interjected firmly. She pulled the resident aside, to a miraculously empty patient’s room. She dropped her voice, no longer speaking as Chief of Surgery, but woman to woman. “Claire, he will do anything you ask him to, even if it’s not in his best interest. He won’t care, he’ll do what you say without batting an eye. You have to know how he feels about you.”
“I…” Claire stammered, not sure how to answer that. Being in love with your boss was awkward enough, but it was even more so when his ex-girlfriend was his boss and the one standing in front of you arguing about how to save his life.
“It’s okay,” Audrey soothed. “It doesn’t bother me. I care about him immensely, but it’s different with you. He’s different. It’s fine, I’m not in love with him. But you are, Claire, and that means you can’t be impartial about this. You’ll do anything to save him, and he’ll agree to anything to make you happy. That’s dangerous.”
“Then you talk to him about it,” Claire bargained, not giving up that easily.
“Frankly, I don’t think I’m impartial enough,” she replied, fixing Claire with a wry frown as she considered the options carefully. This was the hardest part of being Chief, putting aside your feelings to make big decisions. “Murphy just got back to the hospital. Tell him your idea and have him pitch it to Melendez. Without you in the room. If Neil consents I’ll get Andrews to do the surgery.”
Claire opened her mouth to protest, but Audrey cut her off.
“I can’t do it, Claire, I just can’t. Andrews may not be as good as me, but he’s still a damn good surgeon,” she said, attempting a joke.
Claire nodded and scurried away, on a mission to find Shaun as fast as possible. Time was of the essence, after all.
o . o . o
She sat in the chair reserved for family and friends, bouncing her leg up and down, elbows on her knees and her chin resting on her clasped hands. Waiting was agony, and she needed it to be over. She needed to know, one way or another, what was going to happen. But mostly she needed him to be alive.
Claire’s eyes flicked from his body, laying complacent on the bed, to the monitors that were beeping his vitals. Still no change. Which was good, because he wasn’t dead. But he wasn’t awake yet either.
She lost track of how long she had been sitting there, waiting for Neil to wake up. Exhausted, she was beginning to drift in and out of consciousness, not quite sleeping, but not entirely aware of the room around her either. She didn’t see his eyes flutter open, just narrow enough to see her figure sitting there, holding a vigil, the rosary she’d gotten for him tightly clasped in her fingers.
“Geez, you’d think I was dying or something,” Neil quipped, his voice barely a whisper.
Claire’s eyes snapped up, meeting his and taking in his full, conscious state. He had the ghost of a smile on his lips, and his eyes were hinting at their usual sparkle. Neil was awake, and his vitals were still good. She felt like hyperventilating and crying with happiness. He was going to be alright. She stood, hands still clasped in front of her face, tears building up in her eyes.
“Hey, come here,” he beckoned, his tone soothing.
Claire obediently crossed the little room until her thighs bumped against the hospital bed’s mattress. She wanted nothing more than to curl up next to him and rest her head on his shoulder, sob her relief into his papery gown. Neil reached for her as much as he was able, only strong enough to lift his arm a few inches from the bed, but Claire caught his hand in one of her own, sitting down softly on the edge of the bed.
“Thank you,” he croaked, his throat still raw and dry from the surgery. “Shaun told me it was your idea.”
“Thank you for doing it,” she whispered in reply. Suddenly, Claire felt overcome with guilt. Had she been selfish to insist on this procedure? He was alive but it might have changed his whole life, and not for the better. “You might not be able to operate again though.”
“I know,” Neil replied, nodding slightly, the oxygen tube bunching under his chin at the motion. “But there are worse things.”
“Yeah? Like what?” she sniffed, having trouble believing that there could be anything worse for him than a life on the sidelines.
“Like never telling your friend that you’re completely in love with her,” he said, his eyes flicking up to the ceiling as if he was asking god to give him the courage to say what he needed to. Or maybe he was just in pain, his abdomen had been carved open hours earlier, after all.
Claire tamped down any hope she felt at the statement. He had, after all, stopped her when she’d tried to tell him about her feelings earlier in the night. Why else if not to save her the embarrassment of confessing her love to someone who didn’t reciprocate? Even if it had saved his life, she was still a fool for falling in love with her boss.
“Claire?” he asked, looking at her significantly as his voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “Was ‘friend’ too vague? Should I have said ‘star resident’ instead?”
Well there was absolutely no way he was talking about Morgan.
“Me?” Her voice failed her, but it didn’t matter. He understood.
“Yeah, you,” he whispered, a shy smile appearing. “I love you, Claire.”
“Ohthankgod,” she breathed, her body relaxing a little at his words. “I love you too.”
“I know,” he answered, confident in a way that only Neil could be. “Why else would you try so hard to save me?”
It was meant to be a joke, but they both knew there was some element of truth to it. She loved him so much that she just couldn’t let him go. She smiled and snuggled in next to him, encouraged by his words and his prognosis. After that night, she just wanted to hang onto him and never let go.
“Claire?” Neil said hesitantly, brushing his nose softly against her forehead and following the touch with a gentle kiss over the same spot.
She craned her neck to look at him, smiling at him to prompt him further.
“When I get out of here, I don’t want to take things slow.” His expression was thoughtful and sincere, conveying that he meant every word he said with utter certainty. “I don’t mean physically, that’s… I’ll follow your lead, and there’s no rush there. Hell, my doctor may not clear me for much exertion for a while.”
They both grinned at the stupid joke.
“But,” he continued, “I don’t want to hide things or take it one day at a time or anything like that. Which is maybe stupid, given how many relationships I’ve killed in this hospital. But I know you’re different, Claire, and I… I just want to be with you.”
“You sound like you’re about to propose,” she teased, mostly because she wasn’t used to hearing him take that tone. Sure of what he wants, but nervous how she might react.
“If I had a ring, I might be tempted,” he replied, laughing a little. “But you can go ahead and take the spare apartment keys that are in my office, because I want you there as much as you want to be. Always, if I’m really honest.”
“That sounds nice,” Claire answered, fighting a yawn.
Despite her desire to stay awake and continue their conversation, exhaustion was finally catching up with her now that the adrenaline had worn off. She wriggled a little bit until she was lying on her side, her arm draped over his chest so that her hand could curl around the far side of his neck, and one leg resting gently on top of his. Neil slid his arm beneath her ribs, wrapping it around her waist so he could hold her tight as she dropped her head against his chest, savouring the feel of his heart beating.
“Get some sleep, Claire. I love you,” he whispered, even as she was already drifting off into a dreamland, and he pressed a kiss into her curls, breathing deeply. He was more than content holding her like that, falling back asleep with her small frame clinging to him.
Dr. Lim appeared in the doorway to check on her patient, smiling at the setup she found. Quietly, she backed away, sliding the glass door just so that the couple wouldn’t be disturbed. They’d had a long road to get to where they were, and they would have a lot of challenges ahead of them. The least she could do was give them one night of peace, where it didn’t matter that he was an attending and she was his resident.

*SPOILERS* Thoughts I had while watching TGD 3x19 “Hurt” aka ya girl is stresssed~ about life and the show lol
Okay so ya while ya girl is having her 3rd breakdown since this whole pandemic has been called let’s focus on tgd lmao I am stressed beyond belief (after my 1st breakdown I dyed my hair and then had to redo it the other night because it did NOT look too hot 😂)
-okay also did anyone else think that the tgd finale was going to be 2 HOURS and NOT 2 PARTS like @gilbxrt-blythe and I did 😂 like seriously we were both so confused and still don’t know what made only us 2 in the chat to think it was airing in one night 🤦🏻‍♀️ so I was a bit disappointed by that but I am sure we are going to get melendaire content tonight so that’s good!!!
-so before the ep starts shippers who are we predicting to confess their love first?? Claire or Neil 👀👀 I am unsure of could go either way
-wow we jumping in right away to a melendaire flashback and Claire confessing her love about her boss FIRST THING 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼
-aww Melendez knowing lea and asking after her 😭😭
-wow the earthquake started in 3 minutes WHAT THE FUCK I MEAN WE ALL KNEW IT WAS COMING BUT STILL
Tumblr media
-Melendez worried about lea 😭
-wow okay I’m sorry Katie @pinkobsessedfreak you were right and it was lim calling 😩 it should’ve been claiiiire!!!
-Claire knowing where her boo is at WE LOVE TO SEE IT
Tumblr media
-WOW WE REALLY GET A LESBIAN COUPLE AND THEY REALLY ABOUT TO KILL ONE HALF OFF DISAPPOINTED BUT NOT SURPRISED (post ep edit it?? May?? Not actually?? Happen?? Wowzers)
Tumblr media
-oh my god YESSSS we got Claire rushing to Melendez worried about him and checking him over 😭😭
-melendaire working together in the middle of the disaster we love to see it 👏🏼
-aww Morgan is technically a patient tonight but she still is doing her best and saving people yay
-Neil saying claire is right 🙌🏼🙌🏼
-and shaun dipped to save lea when it hasn’t cleared yet that firefighter didn’t really try very hard to stop him lol
-but guys maybe we’ll have a melendaire quarantine redemption and that when the aftershock hits Claire and Neil will be trapped alone together 🤞🏼🤞🏼 far fetched I know
-I’m getting claustrophobic just from watching shaun try to crawl thru that rubble
-yessss STEEEEEVE IS BACK 😭
-Morgan plz don’t screw up your hands for good
-oh my god yesss I loved that, Morgan taking charge and the nurses lowkey loving it
Tumblr media
-shaun was really thinking of not helping this woman because it wasn’t lea
-y’all I swear to god if that shot of lea we saw from the promos is when the aftershock happens and that’s when she dies IM DONE because she just had a look of acceptance and defeat and I am not ready nor will I EVER BE
-Morgan getting a kick out of the nurses calling her a bitch 😂👏🏼👏🏼 same girl same
-shouldn’t park be helping people??
-awww this kid is gonna die gdi!!
-Morgan trust your nurses!!
-damn shaun savage love it
-why does Melendez look so uncomfortable trying to make small talk he’s not normally like this unless it’s because he’s in more pain and more injured then he’s saying 😩😩 (post ep edit wow I did NOT want to be right)
-Melendez being amazing by his boos ideas THAT LOOK OF LOVE AND AWE ON HIS FACE AS HE STARED AT CLAIRE KILLED ME
-I’m calling it now the wife is gonna say she sees the way they look at each other and call them out on it and tell them they shouldn’t wait 👀
-yay lea has been found 🙏🏼🙏🏼
-HE JUST SAID SPEND ENOUGH TIME AROUND CLAIRE AND YOULL SEE HOW INCREDIBLE SHE IS 😭😭 THERE WERE WITNESSES AND EVERYTHING HES NOT AFRAID TO SHOW HIS LOVE FOR HER
Tumblr media
-I feel like Melendez is gonna collapse ngl
-or ooh what if we get Melendez covering Claire from debris falling around them when the aftershock hits
-OH MY GOD LEA IS OKAY 😭👏🏼 and heard that heartbreaking speech from shaun I want to root for them so bad but after shaun blowing up at lea the last ep it just puts a bad taste in my mouth
-OKAY SINCE LEA IS OKAY AND SAFE(like wow not even where shaun was going at all to find her lol) WHO THE FUCK IS GONNA DIE???!!! 😩😩
-better be glassman lol
-aww Morgan no plz don’t ruin your hands PLEASE
-MORGAN NOOOOO 😩😩😭
-that shot of Claire leaning over someone in the promo is gonna be her leaning over Melendez I’m calling it
-FUCK NOO THE AFTERSHOCK

Tumblr media
-AND WHERE SHAUN IS AT ITS FILLING UP WITH WATER OH MY GOD WE FUCKED
-I SWEAR TO GOD YALL IF THEY KILL OF MELENDEZ I AM DONE WATCHING THE SHOW 😩😩
-THAT PROMO BETTER BE MISLEADING AND LIM BETTER NOT BE CRYING BECAUSE NEIL ABOUT TO DIE AND IF HE ISNT SHE BETTER NOT BE CRYING BECAUSE HES HURT AND STILL HAS FEELINGS FOR HIM 🤢
-SO APPARENTLY IN THE CANADIAN PROMO WE GET CLAIRE GIVING MELENDEZ A CROSS BECAUSE SHE KNOWS HE RELIGIOUS STOP IM CRYING THAT SO SOFT FUCK 😭😭😭😭
