Finding a human waking up from cryogenic sleep
Tumblr media
[ PLATONIC HEADCANONS ] [ 9S & 2B ]
[ NieR Automata ]
⚠️ This contain heavy spoilers
Tumblr media
Can you do me a favor and read this while hearing NieR Automata Soundtrack? I recomend City Ruins
Some time ago I read a fic that raised this idea but did not delve into it, and it had been in my mind for a long time so i decided to do it myself!!I loved how it ended so i hope you enjoy it as much as I did!! 🖤
Tumblr media
A long time ago an strange plague scourged humanity and triggered a deadly disease, a big group of humans started the Gestalt Project in hopes to preserve humanity, putting humans soul in another container (that doesn't went too well). A part from the humans didn't completely trusted in the Gestalt Project so those humans started another projects with their lasts hopes, and as the last resource they put the people that wasn't infected yet in cryogenic sleep waiting for a better time where the threat of this disease no longer exist
However, this side project was almost completely forgotten and when the rumors of the humans who had survived were in the moon began to spread the one of the other humans in cryogenic sleep started to spread too, however this humans were taken just as a mere rumor and were leave there since the creators of YoRHa didn't had evidence of this project
It isn't too weird to think that you will be found some day, and that days seem to finally happen thanks to the YoRHa unit 9S, a scanner type that has been wandering around to collect information. Is probably that he is already with 2B, since the two of them had different missions around the land, and suspicious facilities of which they have no registration is something that is necesary to investigate
While they were trying to decipher what is the purpose of all of that they accidentally active the system of one of cryogenic chambers, starting the protocol of reactivation, imediatly getting themselfs on guard, ready to fight in case they need it, watching carefuly as the chamber open slowly only to reveal that inside of it was a human, you
As you slowly start to incorporate, with slow movements and trying to sit down 9S is the first one to react, guarding his sword and quickly going to your side, gently helping you sit down but still unable to say something, 2B doesn't waste more time before approaching to you too but still in shock. Non of them know what to do or what to say, even when the whole purpose of the androids is to protect humans, to fight to bring them a better future they had never actually met a human, an inmense curiosity and still a protective instinct immediatly fills both
If you react by being afraid of them they understand, both immediatly take an step back and quickly introduced themselfs, 9S is the one explaining the situation while 2B just comfirm the information, promising that the last thing they will do is to harm you. In the other hand if you are more comfortable with them or even excited to meet them 9S quickly match you energy, as well they don't waste much time to introduce themselfs but 9S is almost imediatly asking about you (just like an excited child receiving a new toy), while 2B try to calm both not wanting to overwhelm you or go against the protocol if there is even one
Once you are comfortable and ready 9S helps you get out or the cryogenic chamber while 2B contact the commander to ask what to do, however even the commander was surprised, in all the information she has about humans there isn't anything about some being in cryogenic sleep (or at least nothing that was for certain) and yet you could be the only human still alive, the commander can't take any risks when it comes to you, so while she investigate all she can about it and come up with a plan she ordered to both to take care of you and protect you at all cost (she prefers to don't tell anyone about this for now, but at some point she will tell the news to everyone to boost the androids morale)
You will be scorted to the resistence camp and stay there, where Anemone imediatly accept you without ask and give you an own room for you. Everyone will be really curious about you and will want to approach to you but 2B and 9S, along with Anemone, are trying to don't overwhelm you, and, at the end, is Anemone, Devola and Popola who is mostly taking care of you when 2B and 9S aren't around
As well you will be able to meet Pascal and the complete village, but not without making sure you will be comfortable in there before hand (and until 2B and 9S finally trust them, what Pascal completely understand), in the resistence everyone has similar appearance to yours so is little risk for you to freak out, but with Pascal everyone are machines so they first need to make sure you know that and you are comfortable (even so 2B will be paying close attention to everyone)
The only time 2B and 9S leave you alone is when they have a mision and they know that there is the risk to find ostile machines and that you could be in danger, so in those moment they leave you in the resistence. However is more likely that at some point you will want to explore the world too and you will be able to convice them to let you do it, 2B will be hesitant to do so and my even try to ask for permission to the commander while 9S is a little more willing to do it since they will be by your side (and he understand your curiosity), and is better if you just talk to them about your wish than trying to sneak out of the resistance camp because if they came and you aren't there for them will be like the end of the world, wasting no time and imediatly rush out to try to find you (what won't really take them much time), even when they aren't mad at you they are worried sick and will scold you for it
Whenever you go with them is more likely that 9S is the one leading and talking with you because 2B is too worried watching her surroundings, wanting to be ready for anything that could happen, however if you try to talk to her and include her in your little excursion she will start to be more talktive too
As much as they know about their habilities and that they are completely capable of protecting you they can't help but feel anxious whenever you walk for somewhat unstable places or near machines, even the docile ones, also the more adventurous you are the more anxious and protective they are, if you are running and jumping around they try to stop you or at least to follow you as close as they can, every time you trip and fall they tent to overreact a little, even if you didn't hurt yourself
It may seem like they are overreacting but for them is just fair, they are androids, they have backups not only of their bodies but also of their minds and memories, and even with that they try to be careful and don't be impulsive, but you are unique, if something happens to you there is no way to bring you back, they can't put your mind in a backup and continue with their duty, and even if they manage to wake up other humans they won't be you
2B is the more worring and protective over you of the two of them, is just that she knows more than anyone else how important you are and your only existance represent a big hope for her about not having to do the true job she was created for, you give her hopes about not having to do what she hated the most and she wants to cling to that little hope as much as posible
At some point the news of the human that is traveling with the androids reach A2, and as much as she hates YoRHa and don't want to have anything with them in her programation is still the feeling of needing to protect humans, so she probably will try to sneak and meet you without the intervention of them, and since she isn't against you she will try to at least warn you about not trusting in YoRHa before having to go away

battle of the battle themes
I've been following these poll tourneys very closely and got an idea for one of my own! I love video game OST's and thought it'd be fun to make one about that, especially since music has been a less explored venue than characters.
Qualifications:
Must be from a video game
Must coincide with some kind of battle with the video game's enemies. Something that hypes you up and makes you feel unstoppable!
General battle themes or boss fight themes welcome
Some examples I had in mind: With Twilight of the Gods from Shadows of Valentia, God Shattering Star from Fire Emblem Three Houses, Song of the Ancients (Fate) from Nier Replicant/Gestalt
Y'all can submit those or whatever you want! In fact I'm excited to find new OST's to listen to!
Rules:
I won't tolerate any rudeness or toxicity. Any offenders will be blocked.
No botting/cheating either, please. Let's just have a fun time here.
No video games that are very NSFW in nature please!
You can only submit your song once but you are free to send in multiple. Basically, no flooding with a repeat confession.
Propaganda is welcome, especially during the submission phase if you want a song submitted- though for the most part the music will be speaking for itself I think!
This is something very new for me and I don't rlly know much about tournament seeding or w/e so it'll probably be randomized. Please be patient with me!
Submissions have been closed early so I can include more people- sorry about that!
Other poll tourneys that inspired me to make one:

Nier Replicant spoilers ahead, I feel like a fundamental problem people sometimes have with interpreting Nier Replicant is that it is somewhat easy to come away from it with the impression that Project Gestalt is some grandiose master stroke 'worst case scenario' plan put into place as a heroic last ditch effort by a desperate people, rather than what it actually is which is the slap dashed, moon-logic bullshit haphazardly cobbled together in the last few minutes of humanity's existence and held in place by nothing but strings, good wishes and some very dedicated android women.

the thing that really gets me about how devola and popola are talked about in automata is that it's never mentioned that the "instability" that caused the twins presiding over nier's village to go berserk was the death of devola. popola decided in that moment that the human race wasn't important anymore, her mission wasn't important anymore, and that all that mattered was revenge for her sister. it just happened to come at the cost of project gestalt. the devola and popola twin models were designed together, to need each other in both life and death. they were designed to live together. but they didn't realize that in doing so they were also designed to die together

nobody wanted it but i made an attack on yorha AU
you can read more about it below! it's kinda throughout...
NIER SERIES AND AOT SPOILERS AHEAD! AND MAYBE SOME LORE INACCURACIES!
Everything begins just like in canon with White Chlorination Syndrome and Project Gestalt, that was supposed to save humanity by transferring their souls into artificial shells. One of the scientists of this project - Uri Reiss - created a series of android assistants in the project.
The series was called Ackerman, due to Reiss' origin and the meaning of the surname - "ploughman", who'll prepare the soil for the seeds of new humanity. There were two models designed for their own specific purposes - Kuchel, who was wired to resemble a human, compassionate and humble, was made for maintenance of Replicants, reporting of their status, and assisting them, whilst her counterpart - Kenny- was made for combat for protection from external and internal threats so nothing can stop the project. Uri was one of the first people, who got his Gestals successfully transferred to the new vessel, so he and his Original creations kept watching over the Replicant village.
However, playing God never went well for humanity and the project proceeded to collapse on itself, Replicants obtaining their own consciousness, Gestalts going relapse and turning into aggressive beings trapped in their new speechless forms, called Shadows. Uri's Gestalt started to relapse too but due to his DNA stayed inside him, dooming both the body and the soul to painful death. Kuchel desperately tried to save the village, Kenny desperately tried to save his dear creator, but everything was already going down.
Both Shadow Uri and Replicant Uri decide that Gestalt was destined to fail and they all were fools for carrying out such a vain experiment and should've just welcomed their end. He confided that to Kenny, apologised to him that he couldn't build a Paradise in this village as he planned, and told him that both of his essences decided to leave this world, which he did, before Kenny could stop him. In the meantime Original Kuchel infects herself with a virus from grief and helplessness and died.
The events of the beginning of the Gestalt's fall caused Original Kenny's disfunction and going berserk. He destroyed every Shadow that he saw on his way but his life had lost its meaning. He used every single bit of data to emulate Kuchel and Uri's personalities within his head, which he successfully did. Although it kept him company, he couldn't forget that they were fake. And just like that he went on an eternal journey, and other Ackerman Models were lost to time. In the current timeline he is more like a legend.
In a couple of thousands of years YorHa androids lead a war against machines. The Humanity fights the Aliens. And it never stops.
The Commander of YorHa, despite his clever and inspirational words about Council of Humanity awaiting their victory on the Moon, is perfectly aware that it is all a lie and the mankind is no more. However, despite humans being a relic of the past, the civilisation such as this never ceased to fascinate him, so he accumulated a great dream of his own to stop the war and either collect enough data and ressurect humanity by replaying the evolution or finding a new civilisation in the vast open space. He is eager to understand humans, their feelings, their thoughts, so he took a human name Erwin Smith and encouraged others to do the same. Not everyone was eager to play this game so he had chosen his right-hand man's name himself and gifted it to him with the legendary swords to own.
1B, or rather Levi, is a part of redesigned Ackerman series and contains both of Kenny and Kuchel's traits. Second to none in battle, he is sent to Earth only on highly classified missions. His operator is 16O, also known as Petra, and his elite squad consists from 5B, 7D and 15D, a. k. a. Eld, Gunther and Oluo. He is in a warm though a bit odd relationships with the Resistance leader Hange, who helps YorHa with upgrades, maintenance, intel gathering and experiments, and posseses deep feeling of devotion towards his Commander. He at times wonders whether that what's true love or soulmates feel like but he doesn't think about it for too long because the twist is that new Ackermen were made to be Execution models and 1E was manufactured with the sole purpose to kill the Commander if he becomes unworthy of the title.
The newest formations of YorHa androids consist of three units: a Scaner, a Battle model and an Operator. They aim mostly on gathering intel. One of such squadrons is the one of 5S, 3B and 4O, a.k.a Eren, Mikasa and Armin. Armin is the Operator for both members of his team, however unlike them he isn't allowed to go on Earth surface (even if he really wants to). Eren is vehement towards machines and wants to win the war as soon as possible and Mikasa wants ro protect him from harm. She is a new Ackerman model, so is in fact an Execution unit 3E designed to kill 5S when he inevitably discovers something that he shouldn't. Everything here is pretty much according to the Nier canon (even Mikasa's voice, who knew that Yui Ishikawa voiced 2B, huh, I certainly didn't).
One of the reasons why machines are so hard to fight is that they keep evolving. Humanoid machines, a new kind that appeared only recently, are the strongest of them and the most dangerous. The first of them, Ezekiel, is just as the Commander deeply fascinated by humans and wants to rebuild humanity from machine lifeforms, not knowing of it being a fruitless attempt. Other humanoid machines are called Reiner, Annie and Berthold and name their group The Warriors.
Almost all of the machines are connected to the Network, created by Ymir, a machine without a physical form.
I really don't know how to integrate the Logic Virus into the story but a similar attack exists in the plot, wiping each and every YorHa unit exept the Ackerman units from Earth. The story is very patchy here but Mikasa kills Eren (who probably was used by Zeke to spread the Virus) to save everyone but it is too late so she deserts YorHa and takes 5S' corpse with her. Levi kills the Commander driven by the desire to let him die peacefully and quickly before the Virus turns him into a beast. After that he goes for the Warriors alone (save for Resistance's help) but comes across the Original Kenny and gains one more ally.
Levi, Mikasa and Eren posess unique weapons and I've written characteristic stories for them, so here they are (ignore the Virtuous Contract and Cruel Oath in the picture).
"Wings of Freedom"
Levi's double swords, given to him by Erwin.
One blade is named "Black Wing" and the second is "White Wing"
BW:
/once upon a time there was a boy with an insatiable curiosity. his world was surrounded by walls but he didn't cease his attempts to breach them/
/one day a black-feathered bird showed up in front of him and proposed to lend him its wings in exchange for a price. the boy was shimmering with joy and agreed./
/years later, the winged man went beyond the walls leaving a trail of corpses covered in black feathers behind him. the guilt was tearing him apart but the price was far from paid/
/the wings were barely visible on the blood soaked ground. and as the life kept draining from him, the winged man closed his blue sky eyes and whispered
"im finally free"/
WW:
/in a far away land lived a boy with a strong love of knowledge. he lived behind tall walls but never stopped trying to go over them/
/once a white-feathered bird flew to him and offered him its wings for a certain cost. the boy was shining with delight and took the offer/
/over time, the winged man left the walls dragging a train of bodies covered in white feathers behind him. the sorrow made him colder and colder but it wasn't enough./
/the wings blended with the white sand and as the life kept filling up his body, the winged man opened his ocean eyes and quitely asked:
"is this freedom?"/
"Blood Oath"
Mikasa's large sword.
/he asks her "will you stay by my side?"
"i will, of course" she says
she is loyal to him but is he loyal to her?/
/he asks her "why do you fight?"
"to protect, of course" she says
she is fighting for him but is he fighting for her?/
/he asks her "do you love me?"
"i do, of course" she says
she loves him more than everything in the world but does he love her the same?/
/he doesn't ask her anything anymore. his body is motionless and covered in rust. she hugs him warmly.
"now, you won't go far away from me"/
"Vengeance"
Eren's small sword.
/i will kill them all, i will./
/i will tear them apart piece by piece, i will/
/i will soak the ground in their blood, i will/
/who are "they" i keep talking about?/

Realizing that the end of humanity began with a flower for both the Drakengard and NieR worlds when the intoners were created from Zero which led down to Manah being born and Yonah going to find a lunar tear at the ancient shrine which led to the failure of project gestalt respectively

Existentialism ahhhh
I have to go off on an existential tangent about nier, james cameron’s avatar and the bible. I have a hard time putting my thoughts it into words, but the Avatars are an existential nightmare. … AND SPOILERS OF COURSE
Ok so, in the original NIER there are to “good” guys called replicants fighting the “bad” guys called gestalt (german for shades, shapes, ghosts) and in the end it turns out that the gestalten are the souls of the humans in the project gestalt where the soul was separated from the body due to the white chlorination syndrome (WCS) caused by the white gunk from the drakengard universe. And the replicants are replicates of the human bodies, who lost their soul. The soul should be fused back with the replicant body, but it took so long that the replicants gained consciousness and developed personalities independently of their soul and started to build their own civilization with culture.  Also, in Nier Automata the Machines sent by the aliens (please bear with me) gained consciousness and started to form communities, without a gooey brain. So that poses the question in james camerons avatar: Will the avatars become sentient without being taken over by their human drivers? I was always complaining that it’s not really explained how the mind controlling of the avatars works. We know that the avatar is unconscious when Jake is not controlling it, but the Avatar cannot lie there for 12 hours without breathing because then the organs would fail due to the lack of oxygen. We don’t know if the na’vi are also using oxygen for their electron transport chain in the mitochondria but they breath something in the air that used to generate ATP and fuel their bodies, which means JAKES AVATAR HAS TO BREATH BY ITSELF when he’s not taking over, meaning the hind brain for motor functions must be active. And brains have spontaneous neural activity, so I imagine the Avatars, should be able to use their brain on their own without their human controlling them. I mean it also takes us humans some years to gain consciousness after our brain has formed during fetal development. Ok, I just want to say: I think the Avatars built by humans should be able to gain consciousness on their own, you know, like the replicants in NIER do… Also, my other pet peeve is that jake just controls the Avatar of his dead twin brother. So, it’s not really him and at the end of the movie it’s just jakes soul in the body of his brother. On a side note, identical twins are genetic copies but are of course their own person. So even though their brain formed with the exact identical genetic code, they are different people. So, I would discard the argument, that Avatars are “just lifeless copies” of their human, because they are at best twins, but because of the na’vi dna I would say, they are their na’vi brother.  This brings up a lot of moral and ethical questions, which I will also ignore because it’s a scifi movie.  Buuuuut it also brings up and interesting moral and existential dilemma for miles quaritch who dies in the first movie but was “resurrected as an Avatar” with the memories of the old human. So, we have an Avatar, who is significantly younger than his old self, with the life experience of a 50-year-old and memories of a human body now in a Avatar body. That would be super confusing. And if the humans are able to transfer memories and a personality into an Avatar, who says, they don’t change anything to optimize him, or make him more loyal? Why should the Recom Miles Quaritch fight for something his old self died doing? Why isn’t he having an identity crisis?  Anyway, also Kiri is Jesus and Grace is Mary. When grace died in the first movie, she was sent to eywa (god) but did not return. We don’t know if there is a baby daddy at the human base, but because kiri is so connected to eywa, I think that graces avatar body hat the same immaculate conception with eywa, like mary did with god and out comes jesus kiri, a conscious Avatar birthed by another Avatar. Ok so long story short: I think Avatars can consciousness which is an absolute nightmare in the context of the movies. Thank you for listening, I just had to get that off my chest and please ignore the typing mistakes :’)

finished a (partial) rewatch of the 1.1a anime
yes, they made some things different but i didnt really pay much attention at the time. mostly because i wasnt as in Deep as i am now
i am going crazy with new context/info from playing the other games since the anime aired. will be jotting down whatever the fuck i think of as i think of it
rest under a cut because im a bit Uhhhh
Tumblr media
futaba and yotsuba in a2s flashback making it seem like theyre gonna go with the route where a2 meets the red girls and show their meeting in part 2?
Tumblr media
i said this^ as a joke recently because i forgot a lot of what happens in the anime, but. in the last episode of the anime, i thought she said "entertain us, 9s" but no. she fucking says "entertain us, no.9" meaning that they KNOW about what the original no.9 did and his relation to 9s and how theyre going to activate the virus backdoor to further their plans
the fast glitchy scenes at the end that show 9s being killed by 2b, implying we'll see one of his 48 executions
he also had a previous glitchy moment where a weird memory overlaid itself on top of 2b as he looked at her in the present, making it seem like he remembered her killing him before
that memory was near the shopping center, and the final scenes of the anime were also at the shopping center. wondering how far theyll take this and show every time shes killed him
the church mod of course but adam having access to WCS victims and just??? keeping them there???
one of them looked like brother nier???????
the fucking hexcodes
im going insane with the hexcodes
the church mod, while i havent played it, apparently put the statues of the intoner sisters from drakengard 3 in the background. haha, neat detail right.
BUT with yoko taros decision to include church mod into the anime and also be aware of it, he could have some Fun with the anime. he did already specify that itd differ from the game
The Fucking Hexcodes are actual messages with reports about the androids (collective) and their fight against the machines
but as it goes on, the way theyre written sounds more and more like another individual who Records things
"Record", "Report", "Old World", "Magical Weapons", "Timeline "Branch", "Divergence", "Singularity"
Gee I Wonder What Other Observatory Android Talks Like Tha iiiiits fucking accord. Its Accord. Accord is watching the automata timelines and their branches now.
a drakengard character is in automata and seems to be More Involved (to the limits of an observer, at least?) rather than just some flyers related to her shop, and an npc mentioning her
WILL WE GET ACCORD IN AUTOMATA-- WAIT THIS IS NOW GOING OFF
i juST REMEMBERED THAT IN TJE 1.3AA PLAY WHICH IS BASED ON A2S BACKSTORY BUT THE BOYS VERSION, THEY HAD ACCORD? ACCORD WAS IN THAT. ACCORD IS ALREADY INVOLVED IN AUTOMATA.
UHHHHH. SHIT WELL ANYWAY CONTINUING FROM THAT. pascals despair is going to be worse this time because instead of the kids having a group death, they seemed to be eating each other instead
devola and popola backstory and their exile due to the actions of the other units who failed project gestalt
probably more references to replicant as a whole??? considering the flashbacks they put in? they also showed angelus impaled on Tokyo tower but i missed that part of the rewatch. i only watched a few episodes w my friend and missed that
literally EVERYTHING going on with the change from adams death to eves death???? seeing adam become more fleshed out as a character as he is based around hate, realizing his brother meant everything, LOSING said brother, and then going berserk while also indulging in the hatred hes so obsessed with. be it towards other machines, the androids, or himself for allowing himself to miss sight of his own treasure (eve)
my brain is fizzing out and my hands ar estarting to hurt because of how much i typed and how cold it is but. holy shit i am obsessed. its so good. it all just keeps going. and going. and going

Don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this, but I gave my rebornverse OCs trainer classes and theme songs/melodies. Well, I actually have an idea, but I’ve been sitting on it for quite some time so it’s high time I share it with y’all.
Let’s start with Hauyne/Artemis! Her trainer class is originally Lost One, which changes to Light Fragment in Act 2 and finally Resolute Guardian. Act 1 Theme - Fate/stay night (2006): Solitary Pilgrimage Act 2 Theme - FFXIII Lightning Returns: Lightning ~ A Distant Glimmer ~ Post-v13 Theme - FFXIV Endwalker: Close in the Distance
Next is Dark Knight Viviere, who gets very little spotlight compared to Hauyne and Orion because she’s relatively recent. Her final class is Shadow Fragment, though it is only seen in her Nightmare Realm battle. Theme Music - NieR Gestalt Dispossession (Piano) Battle Theme - Touhou Remix Project: Wicked Child Nue Nightmare Realm Battle Theme - FE13: Don’t Speak Her Name!
Last, but not least, is Orion! Their starting class was Adrift Soul, which later becomes Ascendant and finally Protector of Reborn after they ascended to the Champion’s throne. Theme Music 1 - FFXV: Noctis Theme Music 2 - FFXIII: Serah (Instrumental)

finished route A of Nier Replicant today
what the fuck
I love Devola and Popola so much. I've only played Automata before and I didn't know what exactly happened with Project Gestalt that made everyone ostracize the twins, but now I do
I guess I'll have to watch (or play if possible) the three Drakengards after we get all the other endings

It would explain why when we play as Nier, a replicant, we only see them as monsters as well but when you defeat them blood spurts everywhere because essentially we’re just killing people. So now you basically got a bunch of Replicants living life “like normal” (except the fact they can’t reproduce) and killing “Shades” who are actually humans but appears as “monsters” to them. But unfortunately they didn’t really count on the fact that 1) the souls might “relapse” and turn into crazed monsters called Shades 2) the replicant bodies might form their own ideals/personalities and not want to give up their body to the gestalts because they just see them as “monsters”. So in a way it’s a way for humanity to “live on forever” or rather “be in a quarantine for like 10,000 years until the disease is gone from this earth” lol. And then the WCS spreads, salts people so they start project Gestalt where they separate the human souls and create “replicants” aka empty shells of bodies to eventually transfer the souls. The summary is that in one of the bad ends of Drakengard (Dragon Dragoon in Japanese) the protag Caim and his pet dragon get killed and his weapons and magic spells get spat out all over the place. Unfortunately, the Nier Replicant game itself does a very poor job of explaining why Project Gestalt was even created or what the goal of it was or why humanity was dying of this “black disease”.

The best site that explains the details and background is the LP archive by DarkID. In order to make sense of where this game begins, one must scourge the internet for details about White Chlorination Syndrome aka the disease that turned everyone into piles of salt and spread faster than Covid19. As usual, big fat spoilers after the jump so if you plan to play the game please wait until after you finish before reading the review!
#DRAKENGARD 3 DLC LP ARCHIVE PS3#
I’ve always wanted to play this version as it’s a prequel to Nier Automata but it was only available on PS3 and who even has a PS3 anymore? Fortunately Automata’s popularity clearly inspired Yoko Taro to make this remake a reality and I’m glad I finally got a chance to play this title. NieR's Project Gestalt
So after several nights losing sleep over this, I decided to write down my biggest issue with the NieR series: project gestalt. It’s pretty unanimously agreed by fans that project gestalt was probably the worst plan in the history of plans, executed in the laziest way possible. And yet, I couldn't help but obsess over how project gestalt could have been salvaged, even after the events of ending E of nier replicant.
This is the part where I say: I’m going to spoiling the hell out of NieR: Replicant and in some capacity NieR: Automata. If you don’t want to be spoiled, then get out now — that being said, if you’re sticking around anyway, I’ll be attempting to give summaries and explanations to concepts in the games that are relevant, so that we are all on the same page. also also I only know the high level details of the Drakengard series & won't be touching on it much.
So. What the hell was project gestalt?
Project gestalt was the terrible and last ditch effort to save humanity from a widespread pandemic called white chlorination syndrome, or WCS. WCS was caused by a literal inter dimensional fight between a red dragon and demon baby thing that resulted in the death of both and the deterioration of their corpses causing salt (also called Maso particles) to fall from the sky. If you got infected, the Cult of the Watchers gave you the choice of losing your free will and fighting for them as a soldier in the Legion, or turning into a pile of salt and dying. BrandonSP has a wonderful video talking about the Legion and the Nier universe leading up to the events of Nier: Replicant that I’ll link if you want to know more about this history (here), but all you need to know is: humanity is on the brink of extinction and the planet is no longer inhabitable in its current state.
Project Gestalt discovered that the way humans could escape extinction is by separating their souls from their bodies — the soul having no physical form is immortal & immune to maso, while the body without a soul can't become infected, because there’s no consciousness to force into a demon deal, I guess. You know, I realized while writing this that it’s not clear why separating soul from body actually worked to prevent WCS, but whatever it worked because Yoko Taro Said So.
However, separating body from soul was no easy task; upon doing so, most people’s souls would instantly go berserk, turning into mindless violent entities. The first success was the playable character of Nier: Replicant, who I’m going to call Nier. Upon this first success, the governments of the world convinced / coerced him into cooperating with the Project, and he became the cornerstone for all the “gestalts” aka the souls separated from their bodies.
Just to keep everyone up to pace, gestalts are the souls separated from their bodies, otherwise known as “shades” in Nier: Replicant.
So Project Gestalt’s planned chain of events was as followed:
1. All remaining humans would undergo gestalt-ing 2. The resulting replicants (aka, the soulless bodies) and androids would fight and defeat the legion & clean up the planet so that it was habitable again … which meant containing or eradicating the leftover maso covering the planet. 3. Once ready for rehabilitation, Grimoire Weiss and Grimoire Nior would merge into each other, causing all gestalt souls to snap into their respective replicants starting with Nier 4. Profit. Seems a simple plan, right? Well, not even a single step of that plan worked. By the end of Nier: Replicant ending E, Nier’s Gestalt, aka the shadow lord, has been killed by his own replicant; the replicants have gained sentience and I would argue their own souls, and many gestalts have relapsed into becoming violent, nonsensical entities. The insta-snap grimoires are dead, too, and-- Oh there’s the tiny issue that when a gestalt relapses, their corresponding replicant gets something called the “black scrawl”, a painful and terminal disease. Once a gestalt relapses or dies, their replicant can’t be recreated (well... mostly) and because the original gestalt, the shadow lord, is dead, all the other gestalts are doomed to eventually relapse or die as well, and thus humanity goes extinct. This is where I call bullshit. There’s little known about the time period between Nier: Replicant and Nier: Automata— especially the time of the gestalt and replicants decline. The game(s) leads you to believe that nothing can be done because the soul snapping Grimoires are dead and so is the original gestalt. However, there is tons of evidence in the game itself that implies it’s not so simple, and truly the true tragedy is that simply, everyone gave up — or more likely, Yoko Taro didn’t want us to think this hard, lol. Well TOO BAD, I can’t stop thinking about it so finally let’s actually talk about how to save humanity. First of all, I read on Reddit how it seems to be that the androids Devola and Popula are only two units, and with their demise in Nier: Replicant that project gestalt is doomed to failure. However, Nier: Automata clearly talks about how there were several Devola and Popula model pairs in different cities/continents. There’s no way that only our Devola and Popula in Nier: Replicant knew how to merge a gestalt with its replicant; such vital information would be stored in every android related to the project, and these models were quite literally created to oversee it. So. Idk why the hell the project was allowed to even get so disorganized, but regardless, after the the Shadow Lord and grimoires die, the remaining Devola and Popula units should have immediately made a plan B. There were several big issues with the state of the world before, so we’ll tackle them one by one for the biggest chance of success. 1. All relapsed gestalts need to be eradicated or contained. Their violence has lead replicants to attack them back and view them as monsters, leading to meaningless conflict. If the Devola and Popula units are programmed not to harm the gestalts because they are the 'true humans', they need to make new units ala A2 or 2B to take care of it. Because we know that android technology is already there, evidenced by the Memory Tree, and Devola and Popula, it follows this is definitely possible.
2. There should be three divisions of research made as follows:
2.1 Research into the effects of mismatched replicants merged with gestalts, like Kaine. Because the clock is ticking, there’s unfortunately no time to gawk at morals. Taking volunteers, even 1 success could be the difference between extinction or survival.
2.2 Creating and housing “iced” or “stasis” gestalts, while replicant bodies are “grown” for them. Because replicants have formed their own identities, they should try to create/raise replicants completely asleep/comatose. If not this, research into putting gestalts into their proper replicants at infant stage can be tried. (Note: replicants were infertile, hence why replicants had to be made, not born of sexual reproduction. Yoko Taro said that replicants couldn’t reproduce because they didn’t have their souls, however I think this was just a comment said to cover a plot hole.)
2.3 Research into whether replicants truly have souls or not, and whether something can be done to allow them to reproduce. Regarding the soul issue, it’s heavily implied that the Memory Tree, having absorbed the memories of so many replicants, began growing a soul of its own (that Nier killed, thinking it was a shade, oops). Now, how is that possible? It shouldn’t be, unless the replicants had made their own or unless a soul being created was possible. If we want to get fancy, a fourth division could be organized to study Emil and the weapons project that experimented on him, with an emphasis on how to either reverse the effects or if any information can be gleaned from them regarding the soul.
2.4 Black scrawl 2 electric boogaloo: it’s said in the project gestalt files that they couldn’t find a cure or reason for this phenomenon, but if we’re trying to cover our bases, another research division should be created to investigate and attempt to cure it. It seems to be a magical malady, so I wonder if Emil would be able to help... or even Kaine.
3. (Moving along...) More androids should be created to build cities / homes / areas of civilization for the newly reformed humans to re-habitat. This is said to be a goal of the androids in Nier: Automata, and they were doing a piss poor job — maybe if they got started earlier they’d have a better shot. The replicants were/are already living in medieval levels of squalor and poverty, which is ridiculous considering the android's technology is so advanced.
4. No more lies: though in my plan, replicants shouldn’t have to be created except to be possessed, but if they are created and allowed to mature into a sentient age, replicants should be educated and informed about the truth of their existence — this is for many reasons. First, that way replicants will be less likely to fear and attack shades they see; two, worst comes to worst, they may be more willing to share their bodies with their gestalts and who knows? Maybe they’d merge naturally. Three, no replicant would be allowed to get strong enough to defeat an android (or two -- seriously, what were the twins thinking letting Nier get so powerful?).
Hopefully this makes it very obvious that the death of humanity was entirely the fault of Project Gestalt itself and the androids meant to oversee it -- at least the androids have the excuse of being programmed to act a certain way, but still. It's so frustrating that we just have to accept that humanity was doomed even though, by its own lore, there was a lot that could have been done to attempt to save humans. Like, I love you, Yoko Taro, but gees.
anyway if you've read all this I'm so sorry but also I'm REALLY interested to hear what y'all think about the Nier universe and it's facets. idek why I've got such deep brainworms but here we are.
P.S. As of writing this, I've played some Nier: Reincarnation and it just further implies that the way they created and treated replicants was both A) awful, holy shit, it's so bad, and B) ill-advised on every level. I don't want to spoil but good lord. Honestly, I think at this point YT just wants to express/nail home that humanity was doomed to fail because of its own cruelty and flaws. ok ill shut up now bye love u

Personal Headcanon
The Song of the Ancients is a set of instructions that are meant to guide replicants and gestalts back to reuniting with each other, but the meaning of the lyrics have become lost with time. The reason why it was originally a duet is because Devola and Popola were supposed to be overseers of replicant and gestalt development, and signing together is a part of guiding the souls back into their bodies. But the ritual too, was lost with time.
