I had a dream I joined a senior dog adoption program where all dog food and vet bills were covered, but you were required to raise any dog the program deemed suitable for your living environment.
I was assigned a Yorkie mix named Mr. Bean who didn't like other dogs and solely ate wet food due to dental issues. Aside from sniffing and making a noise like rocks grinding together when he was bored or hungry, Mr. Bean was totally silent.
He had nine legs in three rows of three, and didn't like being picked up because his legs would inevitably get jammed in weird angles. If you sat where he could reach, he will come and sit in your lap. Mr. Bean could carry things with his front legs while walking on the others. He did not move very fast, but occasionally did a super jump.
Mr. Bean had a barreleye fish type situation, with two giant transparent fluid filled sacs on the top of his head that sensed both light and sound. The backs of each sac were coated in shiny reflective material. His actual eyes were on stalks in the center of each sac and moved independently.
Mr. Bean had a deep crease on his forehead which made him look permanently angry. There was a brushy appendage and tear gland in the crease. Mr. Bean cleans his eyes by wiping them over with his tear-soaked brushy appendage, then folding his head in half to rub his eyes against each other.
Mr. Bean had a long tongue covered in tiny razor sharp teeth that regrew continuously, displacing old teeth toward the tip. He had the habit of licking his feet to dislodge loose teeth, which meant he didn't swallow any while eating, but I was at constant risk of stepping on his fallen teeth.
Mr. Bean's favorite activity was eating out of increasingly convoluted containers. As a special reward, I'd give him a boiled crab and that would engage him for the entire day.

Made this for the Solarpunk Aesthetic Week server in a sudden creative fever, so I guess I'll post it here too hh
A relative of mine knows someone who teaches kids, so I'm gonna suggest this as an art project for them! The idea is that students could each make/decorate their own shelf, then put them together to form a hive, which could function as mini lockers in their classrooms. Then, by the end of the school year or something, they could either take their own little shelf home (or exchange them with their peers?), or recycle them into materials for the next class! Hopefully it'll teach them about pollinators too 🐝
Idk how doable this project is really, and its scary to imagine one of my silly designs could actually become something tangible irl. But even so, I'm still excited to try 🥰 (And if anyone else attempts this too, please let me know!!!)

see the fandom has this thing where the hermits are different species and when they’re part animal/mob they’re a hybrid but nobody talks about the even funnier canon lore that they’re all the exact same species. Their species is hermit.
[long post - lots of worldbuilding and speculative biology below]
Jevin looks like a slime, Doc looks like that, most of them look human, but in actuality they’re all just hermits. The only information we have about this is that hermits are shorter than the average player, some references to hobbits, some references to hermits being hardworking, the fact that gem isn’t a hermit and had to wear antlers to pretend to be one, and that’s it.
I love biology and worldbuilding and this is fascinating to me. When you take into account previous seasons and events and throw-away lines this gets even more insane. Grian and Hypno are acknowledged to not have mouths (and even more hermits don’t have them on their skin). Mumbo turned into a potato. Cleo had snake hair at one point. There are a million other weird things I’m forgetting. You could handwave some of this with an explanation like “hermits are shapeshifters” or “hermits are gods” and that is a very valid and fun take but I think it is SO much funnier if these are just normal things that happen in the hermit species, which aren’t fantastical at all and are adaptations with elaborate mechanics and explanations.
Perhaps hermits, similar to bugs, regularly shed their skin (or a process similar to it) and change their appearance. Some insects change colours/appearance due to their environment rather than genetics, ie macleays spectre stick insects can turn lichen colours when raised around lichen. Maybe the hermits shed their skins on a regular basis, including during their adult life, and this allows them to better match their environment- causing physical changes related to what they have been exposed to. This causes potato Mumbo and medusa Cleo and DM Tango and any other example of a specific skin change. For more constant differences in appearance - maybe life cycles could be considered?
Tumblr media
this may be the weirdest thing I’ve ever made. For those that don’t know, “n” is the number of chromosomes, where n is the haploid number, so 2n is diploid. Diploid cells are necessary for sexual reproduction. Of course, a lot of these life cycles are centered around reproduction, as is the nature of a life cycle, but in reality the hermits are in no rush and are happy to stay at whatever point of the life cycle they’re at, this is just an outline of the species’ mechanics.
I mean, most of this diagram is conjecture… but I think it is interesting to consider! Jevin especially reminded me a lot of slime mould life cycles so this is heavily inspired off that, but also inspired by bug life cycles as well.
If you want to get even more indepth we can consider the gender roles of hermit society (remember that clip where Grian implied builders were housewives and redstoners were breadwinning husbands?). Perhaps we can get meta and consider respawn an aspect of being a hermit as well - are they able to regenerate after death? What is Cleo’s place in all this, being undead? Is arm thickness, where your arm can either be 3px or 4px wide, an example of sexual dimorphism?
but. well. tldr: the hermits being one species is a very fun idea we should be doing more with, i think

my Valentine’s Day love letter is for chytridiomycota :D the grandmother of every single fungi on the planet, the chytridiomycota is somehow unlike any other fungus in varying ways
such as its environment. chytridiomycota are largely aquatic, yet they’re one of the most common land parasites :D on the same topic, their spores are flagellated in order to literally swim through the water, which is unique almost entirely to them.
Chytrids are also one of the only fungi that reproduce oogamously relating them closer to LAND ANIMALS !!!! Than any aquatic creature or fungi.
This makes me believe that they actually had a hand in the creation of humans during evolution, since fungus and human genomes are so incredibly close to each other. It’s one of the most simple fungi but it’s so incredible to me :D 🖤🖤🖤

HOW TO PIN YOUR INSECTS:
Position limbs into desired arrangement and pin in place
Maintain eye contact
Pin should pass through the center of the thorax
Move slowly; lest the divine light leak out along with the ichor
Wait for the embers to die.
Wait for the embers to reignite.

Hi there! Discovered your work today and I love it!!! You have such a lovely style. Do you have any advice for how you interpret the complicated insect anatomy into something manageable that still makes it distinguishable?
I've been trying to get into drawing insects but sometimes the leg joints specifically really have me scratching my head.
hey thanks a lot, i'm glad you like my bugs.
as far as drawing bugs goes, i do really think that having a grasp of insect anatomy and how everything fits together is really the best way to start figuring out how to simplify their designs in a satisfying way. unfortunately insect anatomy is so varied between and even within taxonomic orders and families that knowledge of how one group fits together doesn't necessarily always translate to others. i've found that when i have confusion over how things fit together with a particular beast, doing an image search for it's scientific name + "anatomy diagram" or something along those lines is often very helpful
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
after that i feel like it's just a case of the more you practice drawing them the more you can intuit which parts are more necessary to distinguish than others and which ones can be de-emphasized.
as far as the legs go specifically, keeping in mind that there's a million variations on this formula, this is sort of the generic plan:
Tumblr media
note how the segments tend to slot into each other like little gimbal joints or something. and from the diagrams above you can see how the legs tend to be attached to the ventral side of the insect and then sort of splay out to the side.
Tumblr media
again really can't emphasize how much variation there is on this schematic, with every segment liable to be massively expanded or contracted or disappeared altogether
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i hope that was at least a little helpful? i'm hilariously sleep deprived right now so can't really put as much effort into answering this as i did with my little bug mouthparts tutorial from a while back
