Your hard work can make nature redundant... Imagine a car on a road on a hill about to go down, it free-wheels down and builds momentum, reaches the bottom and starts to ascend the next hill with it's momentum. However this car has no engine and shortly loses it's speed. So you start to push the car up the next hill hopefully with help from your friends in order to climb and through a momentus effort you make it to the start of the next hill. Then start again. Imagine a garden the same way, by missing out key components you only have momentum from your effort and not a powered capability. So by using an engine which could be symbolised as I.M.O. (microbes) we can drive the car rather than push it. Maybe we need to refil the car (or charge) and generally manage the machine but this is managing not labouring. The momentus effort to push a car up a hill is like a seasonal cultivation in order to break up the weathered, compacted ground or by refertilising and removing weeds. By putting the effort into the initial garden build you can put that engine into the garden and cruise around town. Solarizing in front, new beds in back. This section is new this year. We just finished the expanded fence today. We also skimmed off the weeds with hoes and covered half with plastic, using the zapping effect of the sun to bake down the weed residue. On the back half, I felt seeding the corn was too urgent since I want to get a second succession in later this summer, so we simply smothered the weedbank with compost and planted into that. Hoping I don’t regret skipping the solarizarion there. Overwintered parsnips are taking up a little space, but will hopefully go to seed and leave room for the three sisters to sprawl soon. #solarize #notill #notillgardening #notillfarming

Quick gardening idea: Got plants? Don't got time to till? No problem. We haven't tilled or dug in years. Here's one way we plant, in this case, right into lawn, yo. All you dig is the hole for the start. If your soil is really compacted, loosen just a bit. Want to add compost? Go nuts. Don't have compost? The decomposing sod in most cases will release enough nitrogen under the mulch. Want more nitrogen? Mulch a bigger area. Make sure the paper or cardboard is really wet and there's a good 6"-8" or more of mulch as the plant matures, add more as it grows if the plant is too small for that. We've had good success with this on multiple sites for years now, as just one way to do no-till. Well I decided to go ahead and make up a bee forage mix with tons of different herbs and flowers. Since I didn’t have any dandelion or burdock to add I just used this forage plot mix to help pull minerals up to the top of the ground. I’m trying to increase the water holding capacity of the fields and adding plants with large taproots will help with this. As the roots die they will rot and allow smaller cover crop roots to take over the holes they leave. This increases the root depth of cover crops and perennial plants as the years go by and in a few years, we have deep rich topsoil. This is an experiment but I’m sure it will work out the way it will work out. We used this mixture of seeds in two locations.
