I guess the problem with trying to put together an "obscure webcomics" bracket that's actually true to its name is that by the last few rounds it would have no meaningful polling audience. Like, how are you going to get useful data out out a poll where the matchup is Catball & Clown Girl versus The Lil World of Meekerz?

The Incident in question here genuinely was so well written but also deeply truly saddening to read

So, my personal niche leans into gilded age-era pulp adventure stories starring Lovable Rogues and their sometimes comical, sometimes romantic, but always epic stories of derring-dos and questionable methods that often lead to the greater good. Think The Rocketeer, The Mummy, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. But also stuff like Skies of Arcadia and Pirates of the Caribbean tends to poke a hole an adjacent hole in my interest bubble.
I lament its niche because I don't see enough of it on the greater internet nowadays. So, whenever I do and it specifically hits my button, I latch onto it like a Garfield suction cup plushie on a car window.
Enter Lavender Jack.
Tumblr media
Dear LORD, if this comic doesn't hit all my buttons. Handsomely charismatic rich man who dons a snazzy 1900-era costume to fight evil, early 20th century setting, dirigibles and dynamites, cop-and-vigilante cat and mouse games, queer as fuck characters, and all served with elegant writing (I would KILL to script dialogues the way creator, Dan Schkade, pulls from old-timey phrases and slang) and glorious, epic adventures filled with clever mysteries and plot twists afoot.
Like, if anyone is interested in what I just described, I wholeheartedly recommend it; Lavender Jack is the rare webcomic in that it is completed, so there is a finite at the end.
Go read it ⭐ here. ⭐
Go read it. Go read it.
I hope some publishing company (be it indie or otherwise) considers a full ass physical comic of this. I will buy it in a heartbeat.
(Look, what I am saying is, for those who follow me, this has Propeller Knight energy, okay?)

Hey you. Did you know Mortis Ghost, the creator of OFF, the beloved indie rpgmaker videogame, had made a webcomic? A FINISHED webcomic even? It's called Dr Cataclysm. No one seems to talk about it and I'm sick of it!
Tumblr media
The plot is generally more straightforward and light-hearted than OFF, but the art and writing is charming as always. The setting has a sort of vaguely science fantasy vibe, but it doesn't concern itself with hard worldbuilding as much as aesthetics, and that is a good thing.
Tumblr media
And the characters. I love them so much. My second favourite intergalactic courriers. The english translation is a little... quirky at times, but it really adds to the charm of the humour and interactions of the characters. I would like to know if the dialogue sounds just as wacky in french though.
Tumblr media
You will read it. This is not a suggestion. It's an order.

Before you say that "some of these obscure webcomics are definitely not obscure" I must ask you to imagine that you interrupt several men who are debating each other about basketball and mention the least obscure webcomic on the list to them. Estimate the likelihood that any of these people has ever heard the name of the comic, never mind has an opinion on it.
If it was "big in the 90s", before the vast majority of the world had ever seen a smartphone, or heard the phrase "social media", then it may be, in fact, one of the most obscure things on the list.
Maybe Homestuck. Maybe basketball dudes have vaguely heard of it like some distant legend from the dread land of gets no bitches, because people still will not shut up about it, and they may have seen people in crazed costumes while on their way to some normal-people shit, and asked what that's all about. Maybe.
I must also remind you that you are posting on a website considered "dead" by the public for at least five years. It's just onion layers of obscurity, is what I'm at, here.
I'm very sorry but you kinda undermined your own metaphor by pointing out exactly where this poll is taking place. No basketball fans are seeing or voting on this "tournament." The users on a "dead" site who have heard of many of these titles and don't think of them as obscure are.

Who in ur pfp they kinda hot
Dylan Springbell, a minor character from an old webcomic (2010s) called Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet, who makes extremely fuckin funny faces and basically defined my teenage years
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's this kind of brash and very outspoken, combative violinist and a childhood friend of the protagonist and her brother. shows up pretty late in the webcomic but it's always such a treat to see him, like. look at his introduction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the webcomic follows these two neighbours, Petunia and Todd Allison, and their daily struggles in early 20th century Australia. Petunia, described as a very ordinary but perky girl, is fascinated with Todd Allison, pretty much the weirdest, most interesting guy in the world to her, and who works for the government investigating a terrorist named Violet
I want to stress the fact that most of the cast are poc, with the protagonist and most of the people in her life being aboriginal australian. which doesn't seem like much now, but back in the early 2010s this shit was revolutionary, especially because one of the themes the comic openly tackles is the racism and oppression indigenous ppl and other poc experience, the communities these minorities form to support each other, and feelings of resentment, hatred and displacement born from these aggressions
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but its also full of whimsy and really funny, slice-of-life moments <3
there's a lot of characters but the main cast is very strong, every character is so unique and make very good first impressions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the artstyle does change a lot throughout the whole thing, but listen. the fuckin covers. the paneling. the vibes. look look, these are just a few examples i had saved on my laptop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
however. the webcomic is unfinished (there's only 17 chapters) and its been presumably abandoned by its author, nozmo. every single site that the comic was hosted on, including archives ran by fans here on tumblr (@tapvfans and @tapvarchive) are defunct or abandoned pretty early. the only way you can read it is through the wayback machine here
I've been archiving the main story, the sidestories and extra pages/zines for awhile now because this webcomic means a lot to me even a decade later, and so that ppl can have an easier time reading it, but i've only archived up to chapter 8 or so orz
anyway, if it caught your eye, I deffo recommend it. it was such a hidden gem <3

both of my webcomics are in the Obscure Webcomic Tournament along with such baffling "unknowns" as Ava's Demon and xkcd and Questionable Content and Nimona so now I don't know how to gage my own visibility
that being said it was actually fun to look through the brackets and be like MY FRIEND MADE THAT ONE
