So I’m reading MNMC for the first time, and I see Leon and Casey signing at each other a lot. Do the other turtles know sign? I’m just curious why Casey signs not your fault at Leon when Donnie is right there in the lab
Also amazing fic!! Leon really needs therapy (and so do all of the turtles)
Hey, great question. This is something I've never really explicitly clarified in the story itself. Casey and Leon's tendency to communicate with each other through sign is a fun little headcanon that stemmed from the idea of having something that was shared just between the bad future boys. Sign language was one of the first things that came to mind as it's reasonable to assume that having a form of silent communication would be very helpful during missions (as well as in resistance meetings or negotiating with allies). I imagine Donnie would have been the one to teach his brothers sign language, if not before his injuries (whenever they had free time), then definitely after (that blow to his face would have caused substantially hearing damage to his tympanum, causing him to be partially deaf in one ear. Something I imagine Donnie's mask/filter could be modified to help with as a hearing aid, but it's not perfect).
Younger Donnie herein the lab probably knows ASL, however what Leon and Casey use is kind of a bastardised version of the official version (both due to Leon making up his own signs he can use with just one hand, and because Leon is a terrible student that often made up his own hand motions that, at first were accepted ironically as in-jokes before they were suddenly being used by the family all the time unironically, to F!Donnie's dismay). Current Donnie probably can pick up a few words here and there but I imagine it would be very difficult for him to follow what Casey and Leon are saying to one another.

I know I've talked about the issues with indigenous languages and their inaccessibility for people from their cultures and how easily outsiders learning those languages can become disrespectful and even colonialist
but if Duolingo started offering Anishinaabemowin courses (made by actual Anishinaabe speakers and educators who are WELL COMPENSATED and TREATED FAIRLY), I would be on that shit in a fucking heartbeat.

The real game-changer in learning Hebrew isn't just stacking up more and more words. It's about making those words work together, crafting sentences that breathe life into conversations. That's the leap from knowing to conversing that truly counts, and it's exactly why, right from day one, we dive into sentence-making in my course, "Practically Speaking Hebrew".
You see, gathering words is great, but if you're not learning how to string them into sentences, it's a bit like collecting puzzle pieces without knowing what the picture is supposed to look like. You have all these pieces (words) but no clue how to fit them together. This is where too many of you get stuck, and sadly get trapped by apps that do just that. You invest in more and more words but can't quite make them dance together in a sentence.
Now, Hebrew can be a bit of a roller coaster when it comes to grammar and syntax. Sometimes, it feels familiar, like English. But other times, it's a whole different world. That transition – from how we build sentences in English to constructing them in Hebrew – is crucial. It's not just about swapping words; it's about thinking differently.
In "Practically Speaking Hebrew", that's our focus from the get-go. We don't wait around. We start with sentences because that's the key to real communication. And here's the cool part: as you get more comfortable with sentences, you start thinking in Hebrew earlier than you might think. That's when things really start clicking.
The daily lessons I post here? They're here to help you practice and solidify what you've learned about sentences in the course. But they're also about expanding your vocabulary in a way that makes sense – because now, you're not just learning random words. You're learning words that fit into the sentences and conversations you're already practicing.
So, it's not just about learning more words. It's about making real progress, breaking through to actual conversations. That's what we aim for. We're building a bridge from learning to speaking, making sure every word, every sentence counts. This is how we make Hebrew come alive, one sentence at a time. And that's the journey I want to take you on. See you inside the courses 🤗

in news from grad life, my supervisor asked me about phd plans today and upon hearing i want to take a few years to do various non-academic things before i start one, immediately produced an application form for a scholarship to study abroad in iceland for a year? like this was not remotely on the radar of what i was planning for next year but tbf i hadn't actually planned that much, and i was initially looking at a master's programme in iceland before i settled on the one i've actually ended up on, so... why not! could be living in iceland this time next year! sometimes niche, half-buried teenage dreams do come true!

been thinking lately about byan making a point when they were younger to start talking to themself in korean bc they didn't have anyone to consistently talk with every day and they didn't want to risk forgetting everything after they worked so hard to continue learning on their own... so these days it's just habit. if you hear them talking to themself, 70% of the time it's not in english bc they drilled themself so hard growing up to use korean instead. it helped a lot in maintaining their vocabulary, though they do still find themself having to search for the right word with fair regularity, both in conversation with others and with themself.
