My kidney transplant journey day 59. Exciting news and back at the office. Today I went. Back to Smartense Training. I took everyone on a tour of my office, the facility and some cool jerseys. On the kidney side of things I went to Emory for blood work today. That went well. I linked up with a few major kidney organizations. I'm super excited because I'll be participating in two events over the next two weekends. Time to give back. 365 days ago, after five years of waiting— 4 1/2 years of peritoneal dialysis, 6 months of hemodialysis— a young woman in Southern California (or SoCal, as its locally known) who walked in to her doctor's office a week or two before altruistically wanted to donate one of her two functioning kidneys to someone. And on this day a year ago she did; it was flown overnight halfway across the country and given to me the very next early morning. It is because of her you're reading this. It is because of her some 300+ pieces of art and photography in my gallery (which you should totally scroll through!) now exist. It is donors like her—living or passed—who signed up to be an organ donor that allow me and hundreds of thousands of kids, teens, adults and even seniors to live longer, better lives. It gave me the opportunity to run a few miles and drink a few bottles of water without my foot and ankle swelling up to the size of a tree trunk. It changed my outlook on my life. It only strengthens my resolve to eat better and exercise regularly. So I did this piece in the spirit of "Inner Workings (of the Human Body)" short from Disney Animation, but added a new companion at the bottom: my new kidney that does most of the heavy lifting for my bladder now. Every day, donors and recipients are in and out of the Toronto General Hospital. The average stay of organ donors is 3-4 days while for organ recipients is 6-8 days.
