Cari ragazzi del liceo di Partinico, avete ragione: Impastato è divisivo. È stato divisivo da vivo, figuriamoci da morto. Era divisivo perché denunciava la mafia e le sue atrocità in un paese che, in parte, avrebbe preferito “sorvolare”, non fare troppo “casino”, come piace dire a voi, stare zitto, magari anche farci affari e politica con la mafia. Impastato si metteva dall’ altra parte, dalla parte di quei tanti siciliani che la mafia non la volevano a “100 passi” da casa. Ma nemmeno a mille, 10.000, 100.000 passi. Impastato si metteva dalla parte di quegli italiani che volevano che la mafia fosse perseguita per i suoi crimini. Sapete, nella vita è importante scegliere da che parte state. Ve lo dice uno che tanti anni fa lo fece, quando era al liceo come voi. Scelse da che parte state. E non ha cambiato posto, è sempre lì: dalla parte di chi si batte per la legalità.
Peppino, quello al quale non volete intitolare la scuola, è morto il 9 maggio. Nello stesso giorno in cui fu ritrovato il corpo dell’ onorevole Moro. La notizia della sua morte si materializzò come una “breve” nel mondo dell’ informazione. Inevitabile, di fronte alla tragedia della notte della Repubblica. Un po’ per volta poi i riflettori si sono accesi sul quel corpo martoriato. Adesso non spegneteli voi. E soprattutto: mettetevi dalla parte di chi si batte contro la mafia. Siate divisivi anche voi come lo fu Impastato.

Peppino Impastato (Cinisi, 5 gennaio 1948 – Cinisi, 9 maggio 1978), giornalista e attivista politico, un uomo che con tutte le sue forze si è battuto contro le mafie, facendone la sua ragione di vita. Con il microfono in mano, quello di Radio Aut, ha urlato nomi e fatti per abbattere un muro di omertà. E per questo è stato ucciso.

Peppino Impastato era comunista e lottava non solo contro la mafia, lottava contro quel sistema di potere economico e sociale del profitto che permetteva alla mafia di ingerire nello Stato, nelle aziende, nelle banche e nella politica.

I'm just so tired of people romanticizing something so hurtful and that is the fucking curse of my country. People need to fucking learn that mafia kills, mafia hurts, and that all those people who died and suffered because of it would fucking throw up in your fucking face. Mafia it's not "uwu, my big bossy dominant super rich boyfriend is so strong" it's more like "my family and all my town can't fucking live peacefully because of these bosses" it's more like "my country is so corrupted by these guys that it's impossible to live in. Politics, schools, public jobs, are corrupted by it"
Can y'all just fucking educate yourself?? Bc it's seriously SO IRRITATING learning so much at school and also outside of school about it, and then seeing it so fucking romanticized on the internet.
Just stop. It's disgusting.

Pitch: A visual short story documenting the true struggles of an anti-Mafia activist Peppino Impastato in mid-20th century Sicily.
My expectations: The Itch page provides a one-sentence description and no screenshots. Pretty gutsy. I have absolutely no idea what to expect.
Review:
Prior to 1977: Radio Aut, I’d never heard of political activist Giuseppe "Peppino" Impastato or his efforts to free the Sicilian town of Cinisi from Mafia control. It’s a great story… in the wrong format.
1977: Radio Aut casts players as Peppino, presenting his story through text, illustration, mood-setting audio, and interactive decisions.
The 8-bit-ish style looks fine, but thematically, it’s completely out of place. Text is often difficult to read, not helped by a number of typos—significant issues in a game that’s mostly about reading words.
By my rough tally, there are 104 text screens, 26 of which ask for player input. Not a bad ratio, except that most offer only a single option or otherwise prevent the story from going down the wrong path. That leaves just seven screens with two selectable choices, and none of those make any difference, because this is a true story about a real person. It only happened one way.
Why not show Peppino’s story from another point of view, casting players as a fictional Cinisi resident, pulled between Mafia intimidation and Radio Aut’s call to action? Why not make a YouTube video? Or a Tumblr post? This medium doesn’t suit the message.
+ A great, true story I'd never heard before, and might not have ever heard otherwise.
+ Despite my complaints about playing the role of Peppino, the second-person narrative structure is a reminder that you, the one playing the game, have the power to fight for change.
+ Fully playable in a browser for free. Start to finish, you're looking at 5-10 minutes
– What's the point of interactive fiction without interactivity?
– Games have the power to put players in a place and time, encouraging empathy and understanding in a unique way. 1977 speeds through decades of Peppino's life, giving an overview of a few major turning points, but rarely pausing to consider the texture of his life or the small steps toward big action.
– Wikipedia says Peppino's newsletters and broadcasts were full of satire and puns. A joke or two would have gone a long way in this deadly serious downer.
– Text is difficult to read.
