For those looking to have fanfiction read to them: we have the technology.
Utilising ao3's download function and a TTS (text to speech) robot, you can have any fic read to you. This IS a different experience to listening to a podfic, and you're not likely to find a 1:1 human sounding voice for this, but you will very much have a fic read to you. If this kind of assistive technology will help you out, please use it. That's what it's there for. You don't have to be ticking any kind of disability box to use it.
AI doesn't need to be involved. You can search ao3 as you normally would, download the fic (in epub format ideally), open it in your ebook app, and have your TTS read it to you. Google search "ffn to epub" to find sites converting fanfiction.net links to epub format (other formats are usually available as well).
I have an android phone, and I use:
Librera PRO ebook reader - you can use the free version, Librera, if you don't want to pay/want to try it out first. I use this app every day, and since it is a one time purchase, it was very worth it to buy. This app has hands down the best performance when it comes to integrating TTS functions into its ebook reader that I've experienced.
Acapela TTS voices - these are BOUGHT voices. The TTS most devices come with is, uh, bad, so when I wanted to listen to multiple hours of TTS reading, I decided to buy. Acapela has a wide range of voices in various languages and accents. The basic ones (ideal for reading you a story) cost 3.99 €‎
This post is not about podfic, which is an entirely different thing, but it is also not NOT about podfic. There are more podfics out there than you may realise: fics performed by human artists, recorded, edited, and uploaded to the internet for your listening pleasure. If you prefer an audio experience and the fic you want to read has a podfic available, why not give it a try!

problem: finding something to help me fall back to sleep that is not from a media property that now makes me uncomfortable. which needs to be so familiar that I will not want to stay up listening to it
solution 1: podfic
result: none of the fics I reread obsessively have podfics already :(
solution 2: try calibre's text to speech problem on a fav fic
result: not bad, but keep thinking about how I could do better than the weird monotone of the microsoft default voice
solution????: make the podfic??????
problem: with what time

Ah! I see someone in the notes is saying the app has been deleted 💖 still, stay vigilant everyone!
IS IT REALLY
This came RIGHT as I was writing an email to opt out. God. I would much rather have someone do a podfic of a fic with real consent instead of doing anything with AI like that. I'm starting to think that these people are so obsessed with treating fanwork as something purely to consume rather to be shared and just...violating consent is okay because yay their favorite blorbos are now using some sexy ai voice.
I use the accessibility function on my phone and PC for tts, and they work how I need them to. You can absolutely use tts for fanworks without uploading them to another site/app for AI and violating author's consent. Just what the hell man

Recording a TTS version of a fic is not podficcing.
Posting a TTS version of a fic does not make you a podficcer.
It’s not even close. The mere idea is disingenuous at best and insulting at worst. No shade if you prefer an AI voice or if you use TTS for any reason, but it’s absolutely infuriating that there are people who think pressing a button and letting an AI record a fic for you is in any way comparable to the work that goes into an actual podfic.
Podficcing is already the most thankless medium in fandom. You’re lucky to get a couple dozen kudos and a handful of comments on Ao3. Some podficcers in some fandoms get nothing.
Podficcers give you pieces of themselves. They give you their voice. They give you their interpretations and spins on characters and stories. They inject emotion and help breathe life into what they record.
It can take HOURS to get a good single hour of recorded audio. It can take a good 4-8 hours to EDIT an hour of recorded audio depending on your speed and how much work it needs.
And that’s at a very basic level. It doesn’t include effects. It doesn’t include if you have to re-record various portions and correct what you’ve already recorded. It doesn’t include the cover art if you make it. It doesn’t include adding music and stitching everything together.
I’ve spent upwards of 150 hours on a podfic before, and the idea that someone could record the same fic in twelve with the push of a button and no real effort on their part, upload it, call themselves a podficcer, and expect the same level of appreciation fills me with a rage so deep and visceral that it makes me ill. Especially considering how little appreciation we already GET.
It devalues what we do. People already have no idea the effort that goes into podficcing. The idea that it’s as simple as pressing record on your computer while a TTS function reads a fic is absolutely maddening, and by acting as though it’s the same thing, you’re saying that it is that simple.
If authors are happy with TTS recordings of their work being posted, I get that. It can be great for a variety of reasons - especially if there’s no available podfic.
But there shouldn’t even be a precedent for referring to those as podfics because that’s not what they are. Imagine being an author and being offered a podfic, and someone just posts a TTS recording of your fic.
That’s not what you were expecting. Anyone can plug a fic into a TTS reader.
And seeing people do that and act as though they’ve created something that compares to what an actual podficcer creates - in terms of time, effort, creativity, and fucking soul - makes me want to smash something.

Illuminate Book 2 Status + Fic Recs
Hi All! I know it's been pretty quiet on my end, and we're getting to the end of 2023 to soon traverse into 2024. That begs the question: Where are does Part 2 of Illuminate stand?
Well to reassure you, this is a positive post to say that there is definitely a continuation in the works. I'm more desirous than ever to post book two (title still undecided!), and every time I'm listening to a podcast or podfic/fic via TTS, these give me more ideas and continue to spur me on.
Alas, the spirit is eager, but the flesh . . . you know the rest. I have a heavily fleshed-out outline that—despite its heftiness—still needs a lot of cleaning, and I'm currently in the works of writing some scenes out. There's clear direction of pivotal events that occur in this next book—but with some significant gaps that still need filling.
However.
Between owning my own business and also having additional employment (because times are tough!), and also having had a daunting/exceedingly busy summer filled with multiple personal issues, my timeline has been pushed back significantly. I also severely underestimated how much time I'd need to write this second installment, thinking it'd be easier than the first time around since I had more background material to build upon. How foolish of me to think that; Book 1 took me—no lie—more than a decade to outline/re-plot/re-outline and write—on and off—as the show series progressed and I was given more and more canon material to work with, although the bulk of it was written in 2020/2021.
While I'm not saying that you guys won't see me for another 10 years, I am saying that more time will be needed for me to finish writing this next installment and then cleaning it up (hopefully more neatly than the first book so that there aren't massive gaps between updates). I honestly don't anticipate this taking more than another year and some months to write and spruce up. Hopefully.
I'll definitely keep you all posted on progress, and I know that I still owe some fic recs! As I type, I'm actively downloading/organizing my faves in a Google Drive folder and trying to select the crème de la crème of these for you all, but it's a huge undertaking (much like everything these days, it seems).
Also, I have a new CM fic in the works that I might need to get out of my system in the meantime, or that I might write up after the Illuminate series is done. Preferably in between so that my sanity is kept in tact. It will definitely have all the warnings needed, and I'm still debating if it'll be a complete DD:DNE or if I'll have some 'healing' or an open-ended 'bright horizon' thrown in the end. Debating on if its limited third person POV scene or if I take a stab at omniscient POV.
I hope that I can update you soon on progress, with recs, or other tidbits, but thank you for now!

[Podfic - TTS] Moonlight Mile by @jennandblitz
Cover Artist: @i-like-to-look-at-your-back
Series | Length: 1:39:49 | Rating: T
Twenty years after surviving the War, Remus and Sirius are, naturally, extremely involved in werewolf advocacy. Their lives are full of it—their support group, passing laws and acts, banishing any kind of prejudice—but one quiet, routine Flower Moon upends their existence; in the best way it could.
Listen on: AO3 | Streaming
So much excitement with this podfic!!! The first item of note is that I'm working on higher quality voices and this podfic truly debuts my new narrator, Remus, and Sirius. I would love any and all feedback as I continue to try to improve my quality. I'm also elated to say that I have a new partner in podfic'ing crime!!! The amazing @kaleanakg has graciously been volunteering her time to help me tag each fic for the multi-voice characters. The amount of time this saves me is certainly measured in hours. I can't emphasize how grateful I am to include you as a creator 🥰

Hey, bro, I was wondering, as an author, how do you feel about reposts of your own work: audio voiceover, translation into another language, comic book art or fan au inside your fanfiction?
I find it weird that you are asking this on anon and you posted the exact same comment as a guest on my fic. Accounts are a great thing so that you can actually see people’s response to your question.
Straight up reposts are not allowed. You can post a link to my fic on AO3 if you want to talk about.
Podfics are allowed if the person making them has gotten permission directly from me, they are made by a human and not a TTS or Voice AI, and posted in a space that is not monetized.
Translations are allowed as long as the person making them has gotten permission directly from me, they are translated by a human and not a translation program, are to be posted on AO3 only, and linked to my fic using the inspired by feature.
Art is not just allowed but encouraged. Whenever, wherever, no permission needed, but I would love if they tossed in a link to my fic and sent it to me so i could see it and squee like a hyper active child.
AUs of my AU? Uh, use the inspired by feature on AO3 for posting, I guess? I don’t really know because this doesn’t feel like something that would really happen to me. Its something I see for the BIG Popular Fics, which I am not.

People really don't give a shit anymore, huh
This new app thing that takes Ao3 works without consent? It's basically another AI scraping BS thing and that is so disheartening.
Why should I have to opt out of this? Why should I have to take extra steps to stop someone from potentially stealing my shit, when it's not even an app that we - the writers - asked for? Why do I have to give you access to my personal email to make sure you don't use my things, sans consent, in your app I'm never going to use? That people who respect the efforts of fic writers won't use?
Why must I tell you no, explicitly, or you think that means yes? Rather than it be automatically opted out and you have to opt in?
Consent is sexy, guys. What are we doing here? Why have we forgotten that?
Why is this something you - the general you - think is okay?
If it were like, a text to speech add-on thing for Ao3 that I could opt into that would be different. Another box to click because it was added to the website. Why not make something that can be integrated into the site itself that does tts?
I'm not trying to pile on work to the Ao3 team, they are amazing and I salute them, but if there was something as a part of the site that you could use as a registered user to have tts involved I'd totally partake. Why make it something entirely outside of our scope that we only learn about via word of mouth like this?
If I wanted my shit used by a third party that doesn't care about me and my efforts, I'd put them on a third party site.
Just as I was considering unlocking my fics, too. Nope, locked Forever. Goodbye Guest Comments and Kudos.
If shit like this keeps popping up with such frequency... the esama purge of the old days is starting to look mighty enticing. The lack of appreciation for the writing and art that has been shared, without profit to the creators, is really coming to a head. Like, you know we don't have to do this right? We don't have to share the things we make with you?
It's not a right, it's a privilege.
That's not even bringing into light the disrespect it shows for podficcers, which I am not, of course. But the effort and time these people put into recording fic so that people can listen to it? That's hard shit guys. People have podded my own works sometimes - I have a blanket permission for podfic/translations in my profile as long as it's through Ao3 and appropriately linked - and it always feels so awe inspiring that someone liked my fic enough to decide to put in the effort to pod it.
Podficcers are a different breed, and they are so cool you guys. Also terrifying, but like. Super cool.
I don't want to disappear my works. I like sharing my writing, I like seeing kudos in my inbox, I like discussing my stuff with people in my discord server or in the comments section when I have the spoons. I like the increasingly rare but desperately appreciated comments in my inbox that come in.
I just updated something and now I'm worried about how this will effect my future desire to do so, my anxiety hitting the roof. Should I keep posting? Should I just say "fuck it" and yank everything now so I know it might not be stolen in the future because the internet is a fucking cesspit of thievery and entitlement now?
Probably got kind of ranty, but like, come on guys. Why? Why do people think this is okay?
I'm sure more will come to light later, but for now I just wanted to get this off my chest.

F@tT Fic Marathon: 261-280
Tumblr media
First I would like the celebrate that my doctor has allowed me to walk without my crutches anymore. underarm crutches = the worst mobility device ever invented! here are the standouts from reading in between hobbling
There is infinity in numbered days by birdlord5000 - AuDy and Maryland September on September, quiet and a bit sad
(A)wake Mo(u)rning by 3RatMoon - Edmund Hitchcock drunkenly tries to confess his love for Samol, Samol tells him to go to bed and ask later. i just enjoyed this
A Shifting Tempo by patster223 - this is like a classic post-Marielda Hitchcocks fic for me, so as a Hitchcocks lover I am being very well fed this twenty. I like the theme of schism throughout
this twenty also was my first experience listening to podfics! it was a very cool experience, and the two fics read by growlery are ones I've previously recommended, so I say chekc them out!: a temple not of stone but cloud and Incomplete Information
words read: 80,986 (887,761 total)
works remaining: 1,631
