"Yet I'm still buried in the mud. Skin and bones and brains and blood."
-San Fermin; The Woods
Here is a Sabertooth Longhorn Beetle (Macrodontia cervicornis) I did with some little secrets in the pattern. They are native to rain forests in central South America. Their scientific name translates to "long tooth" "deer antler." Quiet an appropriate name if you ask me.

Sabertooth longhorn beetles (Macrodontia cervicornis) are one of the longest beetles in the world. Including the serrated jaws of males (like this one), they can reach 7 in (17.8 cm) long!🪲 Living in humid rain forests in the Amazon River basin from Brazil west to Peru and Ecuador, these beetles are at risk. In recent decades, millions of acres of Amazon rain forest have been cut down to make way for cattle ranches, soybean fields, and other uses. The beetles are also a collector’s item—a single specimen can go for thousands of dollars; the practice of collecting these long-lived beetles is another cause of their decline. The Museum's upcoming special exhibition Extinct and Endangered: Insects in Peril, will feature uniquely powerful macrophotography by Levon Biss (@levonbiss), which highlights 40 incredible but imperiled species from specimens in the Museum's world-class research collection, including the sabertooth longhorn beetle, in large-format photographs, some as large as 4.5 by 8 feet. Check out the link in our bio to learn more about this special exhibition which opens on June 22. Sabertooth Longhorn Beetle!
The Sabertooth longhorn beetle (Macrodontia cervicornis) is a contender for the world’s longest beetle. If you include its horns the longest confirmed specimen was 17.7cm
They spend the majority of their life eating decaying plant matter in their larval stage which can be up to 10 years

Entomology Specimens stitched by Skittle_kittle.
My entomology cross stitch project, 3 years in the making! I started this project because I wanted to collect real specimens, but at the time it was too much money for the size of the collection I wanted! I had also just started cross stitching, my first project being a butterfly, so i kept at it and here we are!
[The VW Beetle] was my husbands idea and at first I was like no that’s dumb but now I love it!
At the end, these past few months, I specifically looked for blue and purple insects to make the rainbow, not a ton of purple out there!
Here’s all the patterns:

The Sabertooth longhorn beetle (Macrodontia cervicornis) is one of the largest beetles that exist and it can be found in the rain forests of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the Guianas, and Brazil.
This species really stands out due to its enormous mandibles, especially on the males, and the longest known specimen measured is 17.7 cm including the jaws. Their black and tan body helps them to camouflage well among their surroundings. A significant part of their life is spent in their larval stage, which can last up to 10 years, while in their adult phase, they don’t survive for more than a few months - time during which reproduction occurs.
