Support for the Amelia wasn't real theory

In Hunteri Heroici (8x08), an episode that focused heavily on flashbacks of Sam's year with Amelia while the case plot was about a man with psychic powers who had retreated into an inner dream world to escape the emotional distress of his own dementia, Sam says this to the man...

"Look, it can be nice living in a dream world. It can be great. I know that. And you can hide, and you can pretend all the crap out there doesn't exist, but you can't do it forever because eventually, whatever it is you're running from, it'll find you. It'll come along, and it'll punch you in the gut. And then… then you got to wake up, because if you don't, then trying to keep that dream alive will destroy you! It'll destroy everything!"

This draws a parallel between Sam retreating from hunting while Dean was missing with a man literally getting lost in his own mind from reality.

Ah, regarding this post I released from drafts?

Amelia, the woman Sam was with while Dean was in purgatory before season 8, had a military husband she believed was Killed in Action (KIA). She got the notification of his death about the same time Dean disappeared. His name was Don, which is very similar to 'Dean,' while Sam's name could also be seen as similar to Amelia's. Sam believed Dean to be dead from killing Dick (so Dean was also believed to be KIA).

Both Don and Dean end up showing back up unexpectedly, having been MIA (Missing in Action) rather than killed. The appearance of Don throws Amelia's feelings for a loop, the same way realizing Dean was alive this whole time does to Sam. They both have guilt about building a new relationship and settling down when their loved one was likely suffering.

Does anyone know of any gen fanfic during the year Dean was with Lisa and Ben? One about Dean grieving Sam and collecting the books to bring him back? Not anti-Lisa but still sticks with canon on the whole "I only went to them because you asked me to." Not really interested in their relationship as a couple.

Same with Sam and Amelia. Not anything about them as a couple but Sam's thoughts while he was grieving Dean and why he went to Amelia.

people seem to not like the idea but amelia being a hallucination makes so much sense. the way sam was still recovering from hell, the shock of losing dean from one moment to the next, the way we never see amelia interact with any one of the main characters except sam in contrast to benny, whom we do see interact with sam and others, the weird fuzzy golden glow they put on all their scenes, the fact that she had a husband named dan who went missing in a war and she thought was dead, the way he came back...

I hate how some people act like, when dean disappeared at the end of s7, sam just dusted off his hands, went “oh well,” and immediately got with amelia?? like just because they didn’t show him going through it on camera doesn’t mean that didn’t happen. or that the months of grieving were any less real. this man had just recovered from months of hallucinating the devil and then lost his only connection to reality and is always always always canonically suicidal whenever dean dies. he didn’t want to take his brother from (what he thought was) a better place and just did what he thought dean would’ve wanted. just because sam didn’t kill himself to tear dean from (what he believed to be) heaven doesn’t mean he wasn’t devastated over the loss of his brother.

So back when TMAGP was first announced, I had decided I wasn't going to do an Infinity Train crossover with it as well, but after the first episode came out back in October, I had the idea to do an April Fools update, and that ended up being this! I don't hate Amelia for existing-- it's not her fault the writers did it that way-- but I do love fics where she's...not exactly real. Like fic where she's a monster/evil are ok, but I'd rather read how Sam's relationship with her was somehow fabricated by his mind as a survival technique. Maybe she existed; maybe she didn't. But then again, the idea that she was real but Sam could never be sure what was real and was constantly pushing at his scar is 😍😍😍😍😍

I love how people think Sam is super open about his feelings and stuff when in reality the man's had exactly two long-term relationships (that we know of) and he wasn't honest with either of them. Neil Newbon really did an amazing job with Astarion, and I'm sure he deserved that best performance award, but I am a little sad how the hype around him tends to overshadow everyone else. The general standard of voice work in this game is SO GOOD, and I feel like the other VAs whose work feature heavily alongside Newbon's deserve to be talked about more too.

You know what my favorite thing about Sam is? Even though he and Cas butt heads and don't exactly get along, Sam usually takes Cas's side. It's hilarious.

Sam would absolutely stab Cas in the back, and THEN turn around and take his side.

On the one hand, it's easier for Sam not to take Cas's betrayal so personally. He saw the betrayal coming, so he wasn't made a fool of. And also, he's not in love with Cas, so that helps him keep the emotional pain at something of a distance. There's not the same kinda tension.

On the other, Sam is a rebellious-coded child who remains vulnerable to authority figures for much of his run, shown with how fanboy he was over the angels to loving having a past-in-common with John Winchester. He loves to see himself IN the father figure, and he loves to make excuses FOR the father figure. It's one of the most delicious things about Sam (and Lucifer, via his own words.

I think Sam is has a tendency to take the father's and the husband's "side," really, even in that one episode with James Marsters 7x05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil.

Which makes me think about how Lucifer is rebellious in terms of behavior, but says he actually always wanted to belong and please his dad:

LUCIFER from 13x13: No. No I always wanted to fit in, please a father I couldn’t please. And now I’m gonna be a father. Probably screw it up like he did.

AND I can't remember of find the episode, but I know Lucifer starts speaking of God different after he has a son on the way, suddenly cutting him a whole lot of slack.

I love Sam and Lucifer's twin struggles. So crunchy!
