Merry Unbirthday here's angst
His back had been turned for less than a minute, taking the chance to check on Sam when a heavy impact sounded behind him. He whirled back around to find the android on the ground. “Are you alright? What happened?”He had only taken a single step forward.
No sound came from it, but sound wasn't necessary. It buried its head against the mattress behind shaking arms and drew its knees to its chest.
“Oh,” devastation completely drenched his voice.
“Hey, no, it’s okay. It’s okay, I’m not going to hurt you,” He walked over to the foot of the bed and knelt on the floor. “I won’t hurt you. I swear I wouldn’t do that,” Its arms dropped just enough for it to keep a wary eye on him. He leaned forward with his palms to the ceiling. “Can I help you up?”
Ten agonizingly long minutes of continuous coaxing and periodic silence passed with no indication from the android of any trust in the man kneeling before it.
He was growing increasingly worried and wasn't able to hide it all too well.
Seventeen minutes passed. He took off his glasses and set them on the bed, pulling his sleeves over his hands and drying his eyes with the back of his wrists. His voice was a broken whisper.
“What happened to you? What did they do to you?”
Somewhere in the time they’d been sitting there, his coaxing had turned to pleading. Tears gathered as he explained he knew adjusting would take time, he knew that there was no evidence or reason to trust him, but to please, at least let him help it to its feet or back to bed so it’s not just sitting in a shaky heap on the ground. If nothing else, at least let it be comfortable in its terror. At least let it have something to hide in.
The questions seemed to be enough to rouse its confusion or at least its curiosity. It wasn't shaking anymore, but its movements were still rigid and unsure. It lowered its arms to its lap, warily eyeing the Misfit crying on the carpet. Faint light pulsed in veins down its limbs, weaving around the panels of the framework. It shifted onto its knees and walked its hands forward just a little bit.
It froze when he opened his eyes and put his glasses back on, retreating to where it sat. This time, it kept its hands down.
A breath of hope pushed its way into his chest to steady his heart. He held out his hand one more time. “One more time. Just one more try and if you really don’t want my help, I’ll go. I promise. I’m sorry for pushing you, I just…I…I wish I could take all your fear away. Whatever they did to you, whatever you’ve been through, cross my heart, you’ll never have to go through that again. I promise. I just want to help you.” The muttered reassurances seemed to be more for his own sake now.
Still, it worked.
The android leaned forward and put its hand is his. He couldn't stop the relieved gasp and the new wave of tears if he wanted to. His focus was on not immediately pulling it into a crushing hug and promising over and over that it was safe and nothing would ever happen again.
They took their time getting closer, inching forward on one of its hands and its knees until it was so close it could rest comfortably against his chest. He slid his palms along the underside of its forearms, cradling its elbows and letting it lean into him as much as it needed to.
It trembled in his grasp.
Jack took a deep breath and willed himself to calm. It needed him calm right now.
He shifted to get his feet under him, moving slowly so he wouldn't make it flinch.
"We're gonna try standing, okay?"
It still didn't respond, but it copied what he had just done. He took that as a cue to continue. They rose together, Jack watching its legs carefully with an iron grip on its arms. He knew Mark’s machinery. Even in the stripped-down state of its legs, it wouldn’t be this weak or unsteady. Whatever was going on, it had to be entirely psychological.
The android stumbled over its first step, letting go of his arms and latching onto his middlelike a lifeline. He might've moved a little too quickly and the creation might've flinched in his arms, but it didn't let go. It didn't try to get away from him. He held it as close as he could, one arm cradling its lower back, the other between its shoulder blades. His ear to its temple, tears of relief fell onto its neck and shoulder.
Sam crooned at the display.
“I’ve got you. It’s okay, I’ve got you. You’re safe here. You’re safe.”
He ran his hands up and down its arms, squeezing its shoulders. Its grip tightened when he tried to step back. it went from cowering before him to scared to let go. He must've been the first shred of safety it's seen in ages.
If it had even known safety at all. Friendship was a very powerful truth to those who were lucky enough to experience it. Deceit seemed to run pre-programmed through the veins of every waking thing recently. I never lie when I say things just don't work out for me and everything piles up at the same time and I have no control over it. I am not lying when I say I am sick all the time, that I am fatigued, and that focusing is becoming more and more difficult with everything piling on.
Sure, to an employer, to an instructor it all sounds too convenient. Sure, I still make time for fun things because even if I'm in pain every day I still deserve to have fun. It doesn't mean that I'm disregarding my reality. Oh, I am thinking about it all the time. But you as an employer or instructor have no right to police me on what I do outside of the environment we share.

BASICALLY I feel like jc is in survival mode a lot preres given the Difficulties which is part of the reason he finds it an irrational waste of time to care about people beyond his immediate circle while wwx cares about other people and wants to take care of them and protect them almost on instinct

I have no time right now to elaborate too deeply on this thought but I just had a brain worm and I need to write it down before I forget. Who knows, I may elaborate and make this a whole thing with dialogue tonight, we’ll see. TW for depictions of Steve’s injuries post s4, vomiting, gore(?)
Steve refuses medical treatment at the end of s4, they drop off Eddie and he hides in plain site until it’s time to take Dustin and Robin home.
They stop at Dustin’s first, both he and Robin getting out to get Claudia Hugs (I just know she gives INCREDIBLE hugs). He drops Robin off at home with her promising to keep her walkie on their frequency. And then he goes home alone.
He tries to shower, it hurts his feet and back too much. He tries to change the “bandage” but just gently tugging almost makes him black out from pain. So he collapses on his bed and passes out.
Days go by, he’s trying to act normal, like he isn’t always running a fever and his sides are itching and starting to smell under the cologne he practically bathes in. It works for a few days at least, but Claudia gets suspicious by day 3 post earthquake when Steve shows up for lunch with flushed cheeks. 2 days later he doesn’t show up.
She drives over alone, Dustin is at the Wheeler’s, and she lets herself in with the key Steve gave her and Dustin after last summer. She calls his name, doesn’t get an answer but something smells off. She’s a nurse, she recognizes the scent of disease.
She hurries upstairs and finds Steve in bed, only wearing boxers and the filthy scrap of cloth wrapped around his stomach. He’s sweating and has vomited on himself at least twice, recently too. She immediately knows that he is what smells, she can see the pus and blood on his abdomen. He’s delirious, mumbling to himself and part of her wants to shut down and cry, to go cradle this boy, her son in all ways but blood, but she can’t. She steels herself and walks to his bedside to feel his forehead, almost recoiling from how hot his skin is.
As she keeps checking him over, she grabs the phone on his bedside table and calls 911, cradling the phone between her ear and shoulder to keep working. When the operator answers she explains who she is, where she is and what’s happening.
It’s a blur after that until she’s sitting in the hospital waiting room and she realizes that 1. her shirt and her hands reek of Steve’s blood, and 2. she’s completely alone in the waiting room. Swallowing her tears, Claudia goes over to the payphone and fishes out some coins to call the Buckely’s. Robin’s father picks up but quickly hands it over when Claudia mentions Steve.
She will never forget the choked off sound of pure distress Robin makes when she hears what’s happening.
Hours pass, Robin had arrived shortly after the call and her and Claudia have been curled up together in the waiting room every since. They haven’t called anyone else, haven’t even thought about it, too worried about Steve. Later, Claudia will remember the other kids who adore Steve, Hopper who treats Steve like a son. But in that moment, still not knowing if her boy is okay, she can’t.
Finally, a doctor steps out, clearly fresh from surgery, to speak with them. She explains that Steve had a very severe infection in multiple wounds, especially the ones on his side. They had to debride the wounds, which is what took so long. He was lucky that she found him when he did and that he hadn’t picked up any truly terrible bacteria. He hadn’t gone septic, thankfully, but he was going to be on seriously strong antibiotics for a while. She explained that he was in the ICU and they aren’t supposed to let anyone but family see him.
Claudia wanted to scream and sob and go find the Harringtons and get them to come see their son, but before she even says anything Robin explains that Steve’s parents had all but disowned him and her and Claudia were both in his emergency contacts, not his parents.
The doctor lets them see him. They have to wear face masks and gloves, but they can see him. Claudia had never seen him look so small. And there, in that ICU room, her and Robin both broke and started crying. That was how Jim Hopper found them when he arrived shortly after, the nurses having called him. He’s wearing a mask and gloves but his eyes are wild and scared. He nearly falls over when he sees Steve.
Steve is unconscious for almost two weeks, though the first four or five days or so were due to sedatives - the doctor wanted him to rest and let the antibiotics work. After he was taken off the sedatives he was moved out of the ICU, to a regular room where other people could visit. The kids came and decorated his room, even brought something Eddie had “commissioned” from Will (it looked like Steve ripping one of those creepy things from that alien movie apart, which she really didn’t get). Joyce brought him the quilt from her couch that he always enjoyed at movie nights and Robin came in every other day with his shampoo and conditioner to wash his hair for him (on days she didn’t come to wash his hair, she would come do something else with him. One day Claudia walked in on her painting his nails and her heart felt like it was melting).
The day he finally woke up was the first day Robin hadn’t been able to come. Her parents had forced her to take a break and get some sleep, so Claudia was there on her own just reading a book. She was so engrossed in it that she dropped it in shock when she heard the person on the bed in front of her make noise. Her eyes instantly went to Steve and she could see him scrunching up his face and groaning.
Claudia was by his side in a heartbeat, gently grabbing his hand and brushing a hand over his cheek, speaking softly to let him know she was there. His eyes slowly squinted open, clearly struggling to get the energy to move at all. Their eyes locked and his mouth twitched, like he wanted to smile at her. Then, as she was watching him with tears in her eyes, he opened his mouth and spoke for the first time in weeks.
“Mom….”

Every once and a while I think about the forced birther here on Tumblr who basically said I was a sociopath because I work as an embryologist and expressed concern for women suffering pregnancy complications due to the overturning of Roe v Wade. They demanded examples and then rationalized the ones provided away. Admittedly, the legit articles I provided were behind a paywall, bc, you know, real research costs money. It was a non productive conversation because this person felt such circumstances were 'rare' and I guess didn't care if those women died.
The next day I performed an embryo transfer for a woman who had suffered five miscarriages requiring medical intervention in the past. Because of where she lives, she got care, still has a functioning uterus, and can try again to start a desperately wanted family with her beloved spouse. Then I signed congrats cards for 6 patients who had sent our office birth announcements.
It's been a year and I still think about the difficulties the patients I work with would face in other states. How I will never relocate places because I could be left untreated until septic, not to mention not have a job. How I have fewer rights than my mother did at my age. Today I came across this pay wall free paper, fairly limited in scope, confirming the complications in healthcare for pregnant people post Roe v Wade. But what I do know. I just work with people with complex pregnancies every day.

Happy birthday, Voltairine de Cleyre! (November 17, 1866)
An early American anarchist and feminist, Voltairine de Cleyre was born and raised in Michigan as part of a family which had aided in the Underground Railroad in Antebellum years before being sent to a convent school in Ontario where, ironically, she became an atheist, Named for the French philosopher Voltaire, she pursued a similar life of free thought which led her to embrace anarchism. A contemporary of Emma Goldman, de Cleyre disagreed with Goldman on several fronts, and considered the most fundamental difference between them the fact that Goldman was a communist and de Cleyre was an individualist; despite this, de Cleyre would move towards a more social form of anarchism in later years, though she continued to maintain that she was not a communist. She produced a number of anarchist theoretical writings, including "Direct Action" and "Sex Slavery," a scathing critique of contemporary gender roles and marital laws. She died young in 1912 of septic meningitis.
“Anarchism, to me, means not only the denial of authority, not only a new economy, but a revision of the principles of morality. It means the development of the individual as well as the assertion of the individual. It means self-responsibility, and not leader worship.”

ITS SNAKE O' CLOCK!!! yay yippee wahoo! have you decided what you're doing with him or are you just thinking abt him :O?
Rotating him in my mind for my own sanity because I got to the part in Path of Stars where they've just. Completely retconned everything about him for the sake of forcefully making everyone of value forgive Clear Sky. The only person who stays mad at Clear Sky forever actually just liked One Eye better
Even though we saw him, on screen, looking at the camera and being like, "I Do Not Like Clear Sky Because His Bad Judgement Caused Us To Be Permanently Branded By A Tyrant Like We Were A Herd Of Texas Steers."
They did him SO dirty, man!! SO SO dirty!!!!!
On that note though, I HAVE decided on a few things!
So, on the note of defectors, Snake is going to be one of the very last ones. While I absolutely adore him, I think it's very important and meaningful that he is one of his most loyal cats.
Snake is a Mountain cat, and it's looking like he is going to be part of the Claw Family.
The Claw Family consists of Fox Claw and Petal Claw to begin with. I have an inkling of an idea that Petal Claw actually leaves while pregnant-- possibly escaping someone unsavory back at home.
I feel like she doesn't really enjoy romance. She's ambitious and ferocious, and whoever her lover was, was quite controlling.
Unfortunately it's a big reason why she's so committed to Clear Sky. She has that sort of unaddressed mindset that abuse often leaves you with.
"No, I know what an awful person is because of what I went through, and I'm telling you, Clear Sky is not that. YOU'Re actually the problem."
And, in turn, Clear Sky rewards her a lot. She is one of his favorite cats, she gets a TON of benefits for her loyalty. Tyrannical, terrible two of them.
Besties (threat)
Snake Claw and Red Claw would have been the first births in the forest, but Bright Storm gave birth early because of the stress and thus Thunder Storm came first.
So Snake and Red were brought up by Petal Claw and Fox Claw, in early Sky's Clan.
Fox and Petal were ADAMANTLY loyal to Clear Sky. They remained behind in the Shadow/Sky split, hissing and spitting at those who chose to follow Tall Shadow.
I feel like Fox was actually their primary parent. They call him Uncle, but he acted a lot more like a dad. It gave Petal more time to go do bad bitch things.
When Clear Sky murders Misty, much much later, Petal is given the kittens as a reward for her loyalty. Having more kits is a point of status, and she's very happy to accept the reward.
So, the Claw family becomes "huge" in a short period of time on this evil action. Petal Claw, Fox Claw, Snake Claw, Red Claw, Alder Claw, Birch Claw.
For Snake, he's raised accepting all this as good and normal. At some point, Fox Claw is killed in some kind of frighteningly violent, unnecessary, bloodthirsty skirmish that Clear Sky aggrieves, and Snake Claw doubles down right along with Petal.
He also does a lot of the WORST things on behalf of Clear Sky. He IS going to have a body count-- though he will no longer be killing BB!Frost (now Sunlit Frost), he does bite him on the good paw during The First Battle.
This bite goes septic, after Sunlit REFUSES to sit out gravedigging, helping to bury his friends and family with an open wound. He already has nerve damage in the other arm from his severe burn.
This choice, because he wouldn't take a break when he was told to, ends up MASSIVELY disabling him. Once a master builder and inventor, he loses his dominant paw and has chronic pain in the other one. He can't build anymore after this.
After Snake Claw defects, I actually really want them to struggle with this. Snake doesn't feel like it's fair to blame him for what Sunlit did to himself, but he's also NEW to Thunder's Clan later, and there's not a lot of people on his side.
And Sunlit is a person who holds grudges... but it's also true that it's kinda not fair, since Snake Claw is trying to apologize for it.
Somehow it's unsatisfying and frustrating, knowing that Snake Claw is only apologizing because everyone wants him to. But how can you expect him to be sincere about something the BOTH of you feel is not entirely his fault?
It's like Sunlit wanted to have him to blame, but that's hard when he's not Clear Sky's Minion anymore.
In the past, I'd gone back and forth on if Red Claw or Snake Claw defected, and now I'm realizing.... por que no los dos? Por que no los TRES?
Since I've committed to adding a third group and expanding on the Forest cats, this is going to mean that Snake's younger "adopted" siblings NEED to have full arcs with this.
While one of them will remain with Clear Sky, becoming a cultural "justification" for the practice of Kitten Stealing, which will plague Clan culture for generations, I think something is fascinating in the idea that they're the ONLY Claw to remain with SkyClan.
Petal Claw and Fox Claw die in battle, "honored" for their sacrifice.
Red Claw defects for ThunderClan first, after falling for the charms of Acorn Swoop
Alder Claw likely follows later... reconnecting with Misty's mate, Milkweed, who has been fighting for MOONS for this very moment
And, lastly, Snake will follow.
(It is also bitterly funny to me that it means Milkweed loses Misty, but then ends up gaining all of Petal's biokids. Never speak to me or my daughter or my son or my son or my daughter or my daughter or my daughter-in-law ever again)
Because Snake Claw will be the very last of the Claw family to defect, I'm thinking it's after the end of BB!DOTC, and over in Thunderstar's Justice.
KEEP the fact that Snake Claw leaves because of Skystar bringing One Eye into the Clan. Even keep the fact that most of SkyClan is loyal to their tyrant-- Snake Claw has woken up to the truth, and realizes he has family elsewhere who loves and misses him.
Well.... hopefully they still do. After everything.
Snake Claw should have a ton of fights with Red Claw and Alder Claw, I think, before the First Battle. Have them all be covered in scars
Because the whole family defects, it's easy for it to become a sensational story about Nepotism/Scabforming. Other Clans probably don't hold Snake, Red, and Alder in high esteem in their myths-- but until Darkstar's Commandment which bans Kitten Stealing, Birch Claw was easily the most venerated.
Aaaand that's it so far! I know for a fact now that Snake Claw is going to be a member of the Claw family, and that he is going to be a MAJOR antagonist through BB!DOTC. In Thunderstar's Justice, he's going to join his living family after finally being able to realize that Skystar is not worth following.
I want to keep that he is a villain for most of the story, because that's what I like best about the way he turns on Clear Sky from canon. He was everything Skystar ever wanted, he did every awful command, the blood is already dried under his claws forever and he was rewarded only with a permanent scarring.
Then, told it's "MY way or the HIGH way," he chooses the high way.
